Ingenious Creations: 50 Times People Leveraged 3D Printing To Make Stunning Objects (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertMany of us imagined our own versions of the future when we were young. You could have thought that you’d be zipping around in flying cars like in The Jetsons. Or that every household would have a humanoid robot to help with our daily chores. While some of these things are either in the making or still not possible, one thing that has surely turned into reality is 3D printing.
This technology is not just being used by experts; many enthusiasts have also tried their hand at it. And some users of 3D printing are sharing their innovative creations on the 3Dprinting subreddit, where “makers of all skill levels and walks of life can learn about and discuss 3D printing.” Check out these 3D-printed items to witness the remarkable strides technology has made. And don't forget to check out our conversation with Sricharan Chiruvolu, a computer vision engineer based in Germany. This post may include affiliate links.
I Recently Had A Full Head Mri. Using Free Software I Was Able To Pluck My Brain Out And Turn It Into A Desk Light
Fabulous, but I suspect if I did this, it’d be a much smaller lamp.
I've also had a brain MRI and I have the disk with all the data from it. I really want to do this!
A Loggerhead Turtle Got Into A Boating Accident, Resulting In The Loss Of A Majority Of Its Lower Beak. Scientists Gave It A New 3D Printed Titanium Beak. It Looks So Badass. He Is Now A Cyborg Turtle
The titanium under the turtle's eye reminds me of Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop. Jet_Black_...8f3cbb.jpg

I Made These Spikes To Stop "Helpful" People From Grabbing Me Without Consent
Brilliant! Never thought about this before but can totally understand not wanting someone to just assume you need their help.
It's more than just their assuming someone needs help. The chair is basically their legs. Imagine a distant acquaintance or stranger coming up from behind you and taking control of your body. Imagine someone moving you around without your consent, without asking, and sometimes without even speaking to you first! Since they're coming up from behind, you might not even see them or be aware until it's happening. And they likely expect gratitude in return!
Load More Replies...I am an extremely helpful person. It is a compulsion at this point because as an only child, I learned I'd better be funny and helpful in order to make friends. Yet, in all my long years, I have never touched someone's mobility device without asking if they needed help. It is an extension of their body. The only thing that would make this better is a low level current running through the grips.
People do it with other disabilities as well. I was guiding a couple of blind people (one now a fairly well known adventurer) through London after our attendance at a conference. Went down into the tube station, rummaged quickly for my ticket and I looked up and they were gone - someone had grabbed them by the elbows and taken them through the ticket barriers. Well intentioned, sure, but grabbing people and steering them is horrible. I had to speak at a conference once and one person said 'but it's only trying to be helpful' so I went and dragged them out of their seat and around the auditorium. They got the point.
Load More Replies...It’s not just people assuming you want help, it can be that they want you out of the way and so just push you clear of where they want to be .
Good idea. Some ppl really need to learn to keep their hands to themselves or mind their own business
That's perfect. I hate when someone just grabs my wheelchair, I'll use my hands to stop my wheels when it happens
I was in a wheelchair for 6 weeks after a knee surgery and I now have even more respect for those who use mobility devices on a daily basis. It was like the chair made me invisible, as if I were a furnishing or piece of decor. It was shocking and degrading. People reached across me in stores to get things off shelves. Some moved me "just a bit." It was unreal. I applaud your spikes OP although I am sorry we live in a society where people are so self absorbed (sometimes well meaning but ill informed) that they are needed. All the best to you.
What the hell, people think it's Ok to push people on wheelchair without consent? Who does that?
While 3D printing may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, the reality is that it is a fairly straightforward concept. Using additive manufacturing, three-dimensional printing turns a digital design into a tangible product. Basically, it’s done by applying thin layers of cement, metal, liquid, or powdered plastic, then fusing the layers together.
To explore the impact of 3D printing, Bored Panda sought insights from Sricharan Chiruvolu, a computer vision engineer specializing in 3D vision, who shared his valuable perspective.
Was Born Without An Arm So I Built Myself My Own Eletronic 3D Printed Arm. This Is Me Holding An Egg
I started to wonder why are prosthetics... boring. In the best case they provide mostly the normal function, but why not more? How about screwdriver bits storage. Powerbank. External hard drive. First aid kit. Bottle opener. Or for leg you can have there a storage space for a telescope. You know when you had the absolute misfortune of losing a limb, why not get something cool?
Prosthetics are boring because most creators of them are boring, and I guess they are cheaper to make?

3D Printed Clip-On Temperature Indicator For The Shower Pipe To Show When It's Warm Or Too Hot. I'm Disabled So I Can't Always Tell Temperature With My Hand, And I Didn't Want To Use One Of Those LED Showerheads Because Electricity + Water = Bad
I also agree it is a great idea. I would think OP would have a detachable shower head installed. They’re relatively inexpensive overall. I bought one for $35 USD and it works great for my son who has a disability and his old man (me) likes it too! 😁
Load More Replies...Surprised nobody just makes these. I can see a ton of industrial applications. Think safety around uninsulated pipes in industrial plants. It would be even better as an adhesive tape.
Not as effective as OP claims. It takes a while to change the color as in the photos, heat has to creep into the plastics to activate the change. Trichromal filaments are also slower in the change than bichromal, spending lot of time in intermediate states. The color changing properties of some filaments also fade after a while. I printed a few parts for similar scopes, possibly with the same filament (it's called "Lava" on Aliexpress) and the results are underwhelming.
Load More Replies...The LED shower heads don't use electricity. They have a turbine wheel propelled by the water.
How long do you have to let the water run to get an accurate reading? Looks cool, but seems impractically slow.
How does this work? I understand it's heat-dependent, but how can you get such drastic colour change?
Plastics with thermochromic pigment. Heat changes the crystalline structure of the pigment, reflecting different parts of the light spectrum.
Load More Replies...Sometimes people live in an apartment or rented home that makes installing a shower head impossible. I have neuropathy, and would buy one of these in a heart beat! I, too, can't tell if things are to cold or to hot.
A Redditor Has Built Me A New Finger After Insurance Turned Me Down For One. They Took An Existing Design And Customized It With My Feedback And Made Me Whole Again. It Should Be Known That Limb Labs Wanted 15 To 20 Thousand Dollars For One
I’m glad you found someone to help you. The American health care system really pisses me off.
This right here is where the new health care system has begun. As more people become familiar with 3D printing, I can see people helping family members by printing 3D fingers, toes, hands, whatever. Then friends of families will start asking. Then the person with the 3D printer will start asking to pay a small fee to cover whatever is needed to be printed. Pretty soon, healthcare will realize they can't make money by charging people $20 for a box of tissue and $30,000 for a two-day stay in the hospital. They will have to adapt or quit. Healthcare costs will go down. Doubtful it'll happen in my lifetime, but that's my hope for the future. Healthcare is low to no cost for everyone.
no, that's not at all what would happen in 'murica. what would happen is, the healthcare lobbyists would get the politicians they have in their pockets to pass a law making it illegal for people to do this, under threat of huge fines and possible imprisonment. then THEY would start offering this option as an add-on to your insurance plan - at an added cost, of course. THAT'S what's gonna happen if people start doing this en masse. trust and believe, my friend.
Load More Replies...Never, ever, EVER rely on murican healthcare. It's not designed to fix you, it's designed to hoover as much money out of you as possible before you vacate the bed for the next victim.
We need more volunteers with 3D printers to do jobs like this so the medical care system will notice a major difference and realize the fact they are out of control with costs.
and the one they would have made wouldn’t be half as fun/intertesting as this one is..Rally, all you need now is a pinkie ring..ala CharlesIII
Chuck the Turd identifies as male so it would be au Charles III and not à la . . . just saying.
Load More Replies...ICYMI, Tommy Iommi basically invented the "heavy metal" guitar sound. He had a try-out with Iron Maiden that night, when he lost his finger in an industrial accident. He made himself a prosthetic finger with waxy plastic and played a lot of open chords that night (minimizing use of his pinky finger). Those open chords gave his music a sound that was powerful, yet ambiguously minor or major, and heavy metal guitar was invented.
Load More Replies...No! The doctor refused to help and didnt offer anything at all. What are you talking about? There are not two extremes here. Smh
Load More Replies...Over the past few years, 3D printing has rewritten the market for common consumer goods. “From phone cases to prosthetics," 3D printing has enabled more personalized and custom-made wares, as noted by Sricharan. "Also, it helps to bring down the production cost for a few products, giving customers more access to distinctive designs.”
Customization can be challenging under traditional manufacturing processes because they rely on predetermined molds and tooling configurations when producing items in large quantities. Consequently, it becomes difficult for them to build or modify their machinery to accommodate every unique design or variation. Conversely, in 3D printing, molding or tools are not required at all.

According to Sricharan, one of the major benefits of this technology is that prototyping costs are greatly reduced using this method. Rather than spending thousands on prototyping, companies can now produce test pieces at a fraction of such prices.
“It has brought about faster distribution of prototypes, thus hastening market entry for new products, while on-demand creation has also prolonged product life for many consumers.”
I Made A 'Toothpaste Mover' So You Can Push Toothpaste From One Costco-Sized Tube Into A Lil Travel Tube 🦷🦷🦷
If you don't want to print it, glue together two old caps and drill out the center. Much easier, and you'll be guaranteed good threads (if you're careful not to damage them with the drill, anyway).
Lol if I were to do that, I'd lose a finger or 2 🤣
Load More Replies...so you're saying that now the toothpaste CAN be put back in the tube.
Yeah, you get mini tube toothpaste, a toothbrush and some floss. Sometimes coupons for dental type products
Load More Replies...When holidays are coming up, I save a tube of toothpaste with about 1/4 left in it, and that's what I take away with me.
I do the same. Many tubes are under 100ml nowadays so you can still take them as hand luggage with liquid restrictions

(Oc) I Made The Jetpacks For My Light-Year Suit Everything Is 3D Printed!
Blimey!! That must have cost an awful lot of money. Good for you , as long as you can afford it.
Traditionally, product design engineers would make mock-ups of products like ergonomic chairs using cardboard or foam. These mock-ups were then given to professional developers, who refined them into functional prototypes. With the development of digital technologies and 3D printing, this technique has evolved. These days, engineers create intricate digital models of products through the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software. The prototypes can be 3D printed straight from these digital models.

Apart from the financial and efficiency gains, 3D printing also has environmental benefits compared to traditional manufacturing methods. Sricharan believes, “Through 3D printing, waste can be reduced by using only the required materials for each product; it also supports local production that could reduce transit-related emissions.”
Compared to traditional techniques such as molding or cutting, where there may be excess material waste, 3D printing constructs objects with only the necessary material. By doing so, waste is reduced and resource efficiency is enhanced.
My Step-Son’s Soccer Team Won First In A Tournament But They Didn’t Get A Trophy So I Designed And Printed Him One

Now that I consider that shape... has anyone tried scaling that beyond mere pens and desk accessories? A chair, for instance? A vase? Thumbtacks? Bookends?
My New Favourite 3D Print
And, of course, you could just 3D print the base and stick a model rocket on top. Or, heck, put the rocket model on a stand and wrap red & yellow LEDs around it, then glue on a bunch of cotton balls. Sometimes a 3D printer is like using a CNC router to knead bread.
Further explaining how 3D printing supports sustainable practices throughout the product life cycle, he added, “Many materials used in 3D printing are recyclable or biodegradable, thus offering green alternatives; through simplifying maintenance processes, this technology can help prolong the life of products. This helps reduce overall waste and promotes a circular economy mindset where materials are reused and repurposed rather than discarded.”
Speaking about the benefits of 3D printing in healthcare, Sricharan believes it has the potential to revolutionize medicine. “Advances in bioprinting could make it possible to 3D print organs for transplantation, and more complex medical items will be made using improved multi-material printing.”

Simple Design For A 7 Year Anniversary Present. The Pennies Are Dated With Years That Are Significant To Us
It took me a while to realise that the first 2 babies probably represent the couple, and not, say, getting pregnant with twins on a one night stand and then meeting and falling in love properly afterwards 😅
I didn’t work that out at all. Thanks. I thought one of them had two children before they met or they both had one child previously. Either explanation is possible.
Load More Replies...Date each of them were born, when they met, when they fell in love, bought first home had first child.

Load More Replies...Two children is a pretty steep price for a house, though, let's be honest. Also the third one intrigues me... what are you saving for?
I Hate Flossing, But Flossers Are A Waste Of Plastic, So I 3D Printed A Reusable One!
Not a great idea. PLA is unsuitable for medical applications, and 3D printing creates tiny grooves that make cleaning difficult and favor bacterial buildup. The same thing injection molded in polycarbonate, no issues.
you dont use the holder to floss your teeth, it just holds the floss so this is fine
Load More Replies...Excellent idea! Definitely a fantastic improvement on the disposable ones.
My mouth has always been small and my jaw doesn't open far without locking up, so floss picks have really helped me.
Load More Replies...That's the kind I have and it's way better at reaching in the back than the above design.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, I just can’t seem to do it unless I use specific flossers with a unique design. So I have to waste plastic.
I will tell you a secret.you can print anything. Aaaaaany shape.
Load More Replies...you don't like plastic, so you used more plastic than a commercial flosser.
This is reloadable though. The handle will last for years and years.
Load More Replies...In the future, many things can be achieved through 3D printing. “Larger build volumes and faster printing rates will enable 3D printing to be a practical choice for mass manufacturing, opening up previously unheard-of possibilities in a variety of industries. Talking about the endless possibilities of 3D printing technology, he concluded, “Furthermore, there is even more potential when artificial intelligence and 3D printing are combined. AI is able to optimize designs for material efficiency, strength, and weight, resulting in products that are not only highly functional and sustainable but also inventive.”

Broke My Arm, Got A 3D Printed Cast
only thumbs up : waterproof so washable, lighter and has to scratch sooooooo much less
This would've been perfect for when one of my Brother's was stuck in a cast up to his shoulder. Between keeping it dry, sweating, itching like crazy and how heavy it was even when he was wearing a sling that was uncomfortable as all hell, we all thought he was going to go batshit before it finally came off.
I've seen these before, especially useful for youngsters who find it difficult to keep a plaster cast dry. And can be loads of cool colours!
The concept is great, but not for every circumstance. And that particular company: your doctor does the 3d scan then sends that file to the cast company, company makes and ships out the cast in 3+ days. I'm sorry but for a kid with a broken arm, 3 days is not happening. And how do you do a 3d scan for someone with a broken bone that hasn't been put back in place yet? Longer term heal times or non-acute injuries only.
Traditional cast until the 3D printed one arrives, then have the original cast replaced with this.

I Made This Guitar For My Son's Birthday
I have a few small things to finish it but it's essentially finished. Printed in PETG on my X1C and I used stone coat epoxy with miraclekoo resin dye. The pickups are fender noiseless n4.
You only printed the body I assume. Would be curious to hear what it sounds like :)
It would sound like Fender Noiseless n4 + whatever amp you run it through. Electric guitars are great but body resonance is many factors less important than pickups and amp.
Load More Replies...... and, as it's a Telecaster'ish one, I must say ... can you make another one, for a right-handed player this time? Plus, how do the Fender noiseless ones perform? Currently, got a set of noiseless (stacked dual coil) from Seymour Duncan, and I love especially the bridge one, but it has extremely low output, due to keeping the resonant peak frequencies high they can't just wrap another thousand or so ... anyway, this looks ... really cool! And, it's the coolest design of any solid body still. Most comfortable, too (that is, to me ... YMMV).
What a priceless treasure that's going to be for your son one day.
Your neighbours aren't going to be quite as thankful for this particular weaponisation of your offspring, I'd wager.
That's a mighty funny-lookin' Telecastroid. The headstock is the wrong way around for a left-handed guitar, or the body is the wrong way around for a right-handed.

I WANT THIS SO MUCH. I've sadly never been able to play duck hunt tho.
My feathered fowl friend, you honestly didn't miss much XD It was actually an INCREDIBLY frustrating game and very difficult (but not difficult/challenging in a GOOD way... in a frustrating/stupid way, if that makes sense!) I'm 42 and I played a lot of Duck Hunt as a kid. We played tons of it because there weren't many games at that point, so we took what we could get XD If you can ever find a Nintendo emulator, you could always give it a try on that. The original Nintendo Zapper gun was pretty inaccurate. We used to have to get right up to the television and basically press the Zapper against the screen. Then we'd get yelled at by the adults that we were standing too close to the TV... ah, to be a kid again XD

My 15yo Son 3D Printed Himself!
I'm sorry, the person on the left is FIFTEEN? ....okay, when I was a child/teenager, all my friends were boys, so I remember very well what my friends looked like at 15 years old. The few boys who could manage to grow ANY facial hair at all basically looked like they had the equivalent of "a single weed growing through a crack in the asphalt" on their chins. Most of them weren't even shaving at 15. This guy has a full beard. There's no way he's 15 XD
I know, I know, airport security usually has 20 questions too. But his beard came in at 14. Still no sign of his mustache though!

question: how much does a 3D printer cost? not a top-of-the-line model necessarily, but one that can do a lot of stuff and fit into a relatively small space.
Some of these are so cool, especially the ones that help with various disabilities. However, aren’t we just making more things out of plastic and putting micro and nano plastics into the atmosphere with all the filling down, etc? Or are these more easily recycled?
All of these projects make me wish I could afford a 3D printer! My creative switch is flipped and I can't do anything about it. 😐
Serious question: are 3D printers as annoying to deal with as regular-a*s printers? Can I get a 3D printer to just print ink on paper without refilling the cartridge 8 million times?
Probably one of the best BP posts I've read. Keeping this one for inspiration.
I really liked this, this is the kind of article I love Bored Panda for. But I hate the whole premium thing. I can't read past #50 without a premium subscription. I'm sorry, but for me Bored Panda is great for killing some time and relax, and the content is entertaining, but not that high quality that I would pay for it.
