30 Times Instagrammers Showed The World Their ‘Real’ Bodies, And The Internet Admired Their ‘Sanity’
We all have a friend or two who can’t upload a photo on Instagram or Facebook without first photoshopping it so much that you no longer recognize them. That tells you a lot about how society’s obsession with body image is spurred on by the availability of photo editing technologies. On the other hand, we’ve also got pals who aren’t afraid to show the world their natural beauty and love goofing about.
On the ‘Instagram Reality’ subreddit, you often get examples of people who go overboard with editing photos. But once in a while, you get examples of blissful people who love their bodies with all their (im)perfections, show how even an Instagram influencer can look like a blob if the angle’s slightly wrong, and that there’s nothing wrong with that.
We’ve collected some of the most wholesomely honest pictures from r/Instagramreality, so scroll down, upvote your fave real Instagram photos, and let everyone know in the comments which pics you enjoyed most and why. Be sure to share this list with your friends, especially those who you know have a tendency to overshop their pictures because they have high expectations for living up to each and every beauty standard.

One Of My Favorite Comedians Posted This On Instagram And It Really Meant A Lot To Me. Skin Has Texture!
No idea who she is, and she wears more makeup than I'll ever do, but she looks gorgeous and full of life.
The ‘Instagram Reality’ subreddit has over 642,000 members and it describes social media as a “breeding ground for FaceTune and Photoshop” and some people “get away with it,” but others end up having their pics plastered in this community.
Sanity Sunday: Stunning Both Ways And So Refreshing To See
If having an after birth body is considered so ugly it needs to be photoshopped isn’t that a bit like “I’m ashamed that I am a mother”?!
This is great, and our society needs to learn that she isn’t necessarily brave: just normal.
I have the same kind of "baby bumps" on my hips and butt. How in the world do you hide them in body hugging clothes?? I've tried for year to no avail. I do love my body but those bumps and lumps bring me down 😟😥😟
Thank you for showing your authentic self! You are beautiful and brave.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I realize there’s a new movement to try and change peoples perception of beauty. In this photo, I see a very attractive woman who bears the scars of childbirth. The truth is, most people think “That’s great. She’s showing her body. Good for her, you go girl!” Irl, people will not strive for this look, and her “clicks” aren’t going to appeal to the same audience. What I find beautiful about her, is that she chose to be a mother over an Instagram model. I’m sure this is a beautiful thing, especially to her husband. And that’s really all that matters.
A Scandinavian Online Store Has Found A True Natural Beauty To Model For Them
Really? This is my exact body shape and stretch marks! I feel better now 😊
Load More Replies...If is counted as imperfection today I must look like a monster 😳.
She actually looks so happy... it's refreshing to see that in place of the usual neutral expression
Sometimes, sanity prevails on the internet and among all the depressing and negative news you get some rays of sunshine which help inspire us and motivate us to do our best. In certain parts of the internet, ‘Sanity Sunday’ is a thing where Sundays are meant for positive posts that help everyone relax, enjoy life, and escape the madness of life. At least temporarily because, as we all know, Sunday is followed by Monday.
My Favourite Fitness Influencer. Yes You Can Get To 150k+ Without Excessive Use Of The Blur Tool
that's true beauty, it's amazing how a smile and 0 filters can make a difference
Don't know about anyone else, but it's the little differences and things that might be seen as imperfections (like the mole on above her right upper lip and the uneven freckles on her nose) that contribute to make a face beautiful, especially when combined with, as in this photo, with a killer smile
#ingerindubai https://instagram.com/ingerindubai?igshid=qdw8jm67y7ik
Well she’s beautiful by genomes! She doesn’t need to add any fake what so ever anyway!!!
Mango - Refreshing To See Older Models With No Photoshop
so true. Women are attractive. Plastic, smoothed up, photoshopped dolls are not attractive.
Load More Replies...Photos like this lovely lady should be used in the mainstream of life :)
A Great Thing To Keep In Mind
Excuse me, but exactly WHAT is “imperfect” with this woman??? Se no reason what so ever to blurr it up on her!!!
I am assuming it is the fat she has. But I thought that was normal after having a baby
Load More Replies...A lovely, female, curvy body. And this time curvy is no euphemism for fat.
That baby certainly does not care about her body. She is just ecstatic that her mommy is with her.
Assistant Professor Brooke Erin Duffy at Cornell University told The Guardian that Instagram influencers face a dilemma: not editing photos can make people body shame you, but so can editing pictures too much.
The Power Of Make-Up
you'd think putting all that makeup on must be kinda draining everyday... but some people enjoy it i guess
That’s why I’m down to 15 min to put on: eyeliner, mascara and a touch of navy eyeshadow on my lower eyeliner color. Makes my day much better! Don’t need 1-2 hours to spackle all that make-up.
Load More Replies...When it's put together like that you can really see the difference, incredible
Uncanny valey. Your brain recognizes that boths sides are normal, but is weirded out by the clashing tones and shapes (since make up creates an illusion of a new shape to certain areas of one's face.
Load More Replies...This is why I haven't worn makeup for most of my life. Makeup may hide a litany of sins, but why would you want to hide what you really look like and risk having someone seem shocked when they see what you look like without it?
Makeup is just paint. I've heard of girls who don't want their boyfriend to see them without makeup. What's the point??
Love This Honesty!
I have acne scarring like her and it’s actually refreshing to see. Especially when Instagram is just full of fakeness.
That's Katie Price, right? Because if so, those aren't acne scars--it's orange-peel pitting that often occurs as a result of constant injections of botox and fillers--especially by unqualified astheticians. That's why you see that orange peel effect on so many women who compulsively get botox and filler work done.
Load More Replies...It takes a lot of guts to put a pic of yourself on instagram that you don't like or that you are ashamed of. That said the makeup in the real picture is just not flattering. It would look bad even on flawless skin. It's too dark, too many weird shadows (like above the lip) and the eyes - nope that's just not a good look for anyone. And let's face it the highlighter highlights all the wrong things. A lighter shade of foundation, a good base and less contouring would do wonders.
Me too. It looks ridiculous… women that do those eyebrows on themselves (or have it done by anyone) look horrible. They don’t even flatter their facial features. LOL 😂
Load More Replies...I know this will sound petty, but I really don't like her eye shadow. It really distracts from her beautiful eyes in both pictures..
I'm always amazed how nail designers never have their own nails done. It makes want to do my fake nails but as natural as possible.... 🙄
You also missed the point. She's trying to show people what ACTUAL makeup (when done heavily apparently) looks like for real, not when photoshopped.
Load More Replies...Now THIS pic should be way up this list!!! All other pucs just shows all ready beautiful women with very little makeup!!!
Instagram Model Keeping It Real
Seriously, I don't see what is wrong with these people! They are probably much healthier than me, I'm underweight :-/
What I Love About The Royals On Instagram Is The Fact That They Don’t Edit Their Pictures. It’s A Breath Of Fresh Air To See Face Wrinkles And Skin Texture, This Is What Real Faces Look Like
I'd say useless to alter the pic when she already look so amazing.
Load More Replies...Yeah right. Funny how the wrinkles seem to have miraculously vanished.
“Nobody wants to be called a fake. Influencers very much feel they need to present themselves authentically while getting the best image possible. It’s not seen as acceptable to put up a photo with a big spot. So you either put up the spot photo and get hate in the comments or you remove the spot,” the Professor said. She also warned that removing too many imperfections will make it obvious that you’re using photo-editing software. This, in turn, will make your fans call you out.
I Love Love Love When Celebrities Post Unaltered Photos!
I dont even see what there is to alter ?? What a mind set is it to see anything to alter at all in this awesome photo.
They’ll photoshop already flawless people and make them look how Bratz dolls look. Look at beauty influencers on Insta and you’ll see. It’s so offensive.
Load More Replies...I mean, she's fully made-up, but yeah at least no stupid filters or editing. Love her as an actress!
Why is this even on this list???? She's altered by a makeup artist!!!
Not really. Makeup does not radically change a person's appearance. It adds color and enhances some features. It doesn't make a woman poreless, wrinkleless or too skinny. You seem to be one of those people who think a woman wearing makeup is insecure or changing herself. Nah, we're simply enjoying experimenting with our appearance just like we change our clothes.
Load More Replies...She has on lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, and eyebrows. What else is there????
This is Emelia Clarke. She is wearing make-up. foundation, lipstick, rouge, eyeliner, and eyebrow enhancer. Take it all off and she's still stunning. She is only 38 (same age as my son). She shouldn't have deep wrinkles at her age. I have one wrinkle on my forehead. My eyes don't have wrinkles and neither does my mouth. I'm 61! If you take care of your skin, it will take care of you. EXFOLIATE! I exfoliate in every shower.
She Keeps It 100% Real, And I Love It
:) Still look lovely and real. So much better than the fakes/flakes in this world!
Did you really need to say that? There's enough negativity in this world, and people can't control how their DNA made their face look. And so many medical conditions and medications can cause uncontrollable weight gain. Comments like yours literally have made people unalive themselves. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. Hiding behind internet anonymity to make a rude comment doesn't make you look cool to anyone. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, whether inside or out, you included, despite the negativity you're trying to spread here. I hope you have the day you deserve.
Load More Replies...With Most People In The Beauty Influencer Industry Posting Images Photoshopped To Hell, Seeing An Artist Stop Editing Her Skin And Body Makes Me So Happy
We need to see more of this. Instead of being taught to wear ten pounds of makeup and hide as much as we can, it’s nice to see someone that’s like, “yep, I have to deal with this s**t too.”
I would never put 10 pounds of make-up on like a lot of these woman have been doing the past 6-10 years. It’s crazy to me the females do that.
Load More Replies...Ill health is nothing to brag about but rather something to do something about.
Natural Skin Texture
That made me laugh, also reminded me of the M&M's Christmas commercial.
Load More Replies...S**t! I've been hiding my face for ages (29 years actually), and NOW I really start to understand, that everybody has pores. Gotta change the way I think about myself, I guess :)
Even the beautiful women, have to look in the mirror, everyday they see what they must accept, just as all of us women must, bottom line, no one gets to have it all !!!
Was Shopping For Bras The Other Day, When I Stumbled Upon This Fresh Air Of An Image
It certainly goes a long way towards inspiring positive body image.
She Posts Both Traditionally “Flattering” And “Unflattering” Pictures To Show People That Everyone Has Both Moments (She Also Shows Her Pores *gasp*)
I really like the "unflattering" photos. You can tell that whatever was happening at that moment, she was having a lot of fun and sharing genuine smiles!
Love when they are not ashamed of their body who cares what people think be you..
For All The People Who Get Insecure From Instagram
Yet, isn't she one of the millions posting pictures like the one on the left? That's like being a, large part of a problem and trying to convince everyone you are actually the solution. If you want people to always be aware of all the fakeness on Insta, maybe stop posting unnatural/fake pictures, yourself.
I Primarily Follow Runners On Insta. I Thought You All Would Appreciate Her Photos
I see that you posted this comment 1 year ago (maybe more) and Mommies DO rock but not just mommies have loose skin like that.
Load More Replies...They don't care what people want to see. They're concerned with what people need to see; that filters aren't reality.
actually she's at a healthy weight, some people just have different bod types
Load More Replies...Unposed vs. Posed. A 3 Second Transformation
pose is 50% of a good picture. the rest is knowing how to set up the picture itself
Load More Replies...I like the unposed pic better, its just for me more attractive and natural.
You know that you would more likely talk to your friends about how "hot" the second one is... They are the same woman but you can't lie and say that you would rather have the less posed one.

Shoutout To Target For Not Overly Editing Their Model. If It’s A Marketing Strategy: It’s Working
Whaaaaaat??? Why would this girl need editing??? She’s gorgeous!!!
I think it’s the one teeth that is really short. Still pretty though!😀

Make up companies should be hit with false advertising if they are photoshopping
it seriously looks like they took a picture, put on the makeup, and took another picture. how nice and informational for buyers.
Her skin does look a little oily though, as mine does, like, every other hour, so I wonder if she washes her face frequently. She is stunning! ❤️👏🏽
My Friend Is Absolutely Stunning And Does Professional Modelling, But She Does Post Unflattering Photos To Prove That You Don’t Have To Be Perfect To Be Beautiful And To Show That Every Body Has Flaws, Even If You Can’t Usually Tell!
Kudos to her. I must say all these beautiful women showing their body flaws is really helping me with my own body image problems.
This post is really getting over the Silly Hill down in Stupid Valley. Yes it’s great all these beautiful women show a little poor here, a little tummy dough, a stretch mark and a after work face. I don’t see how showing these ridiculous mini-“flaws” can help young girls and women feel better about themselves?! In my opinion it could make it worse.
She's My Favorite! So Gorgeous And Honest As Hell About Everything From Body Image, To Bad Skin, To Health Issues
I love this!! Let’s show love to fellow Port implant patients of all kinds because there are a lot of us out there that need that direct lifeline and she’s an inspiration! More disabled representation is always a wonderful and beautiful thing.
With all due respect, that has nothing to do with this gorgeous woman’s photo nor can she speak for herself to you about how she feels on the matter. However, I on the other hand who happens to have a Port as well due to being born with Sickle Cell Anemia & having terrible veins to start IVs in since I was constantly stuck with needles as a child, can sincerely say you’re off your rocker because it’s been conventional medical treatment that has saved my life more times than I care to count. If you don’t wanna use it, don’t. But don’t comment on here as though you know the struggles of people who go through hard, hard sh¡t in their lives when it comes to their health. So please, respectfully, screw off.
Load More Replies...This Insta-Girl Posts Pics On Both ”good” And ”bad” Days And Gives No F**k About It. I Love It
Again....seriously can't get on board with these people who post one "natural picture" for every 50 or so unnatural ones, then want people to praise them for their "honestly" in a sea of dishonest picture filtering just because they did so. Seriously...if the people doing this are really so concerned about giving people positive self-image vibes, maybe they should stop posting the 50+-filtered pics they post in between the "natural" ones.
She looks like the lady that I saw a make up video of recently. She uses bright pink and glitter (blind by sun from beauty(?) And sunshine"...something like that), yellow ("inspired by color of teeth"), and at the end, "be sexy".
Body Positive Influencer Showing Off Her Stretch Marks
agreed. I am 13 and 5'7, and I have stretch marks near where that model does. no one else seems to notice them, but when they do, I feel super self conscious. they are a lot easier to see because they are purple and there are a lot of them.
Load More Replies...Everyone has these. They don't mean your fat. It means a part of your body grew fast and your skin couldn't grow more fast enough.
No, not everyone has these, I don't and neither do any of my female friends. It's important to love your body the way it is but let's not assume everyone's body has imperfections to make us feel better about our bodies. Come on, be better that this.

They made her stomach.bulge smaller, made her breasts perky...possible altered her bottoms to cover more of her stomach and made her double chin less prominent....but definitely the first two. No one is saying this is ideal. They're saying this is honest and real life. Media sometimes tries to be more inclusive on body types but then edit the s**t out of those that don't fit the standard so they're closer to the standard. If you're willing to post a pic like that of a larger body type in your magazine then post a pic that actually reflects that body type. Even people in a healthy weight range can have double chins, belly bulges, sagging or not perfectly round breasts, stretch marks.

If these women were trying to really show body positivity, then the filtered and edited pictures would not be part of their social media profiles at all. I’m sick and tired of having this forced on me on a daily basis. Please understand that an Instagram “influencer” is not a good role model for this.
Yeah, they all started this s**t and now they're like turning themselves away from it because they're partially responsible for other people's unrealistic beauty standards. Hypocrisy, no?
Load More Replies...It's nice when they show themselves unflattering once in a while but many of these women are the cause of the problem of unrealistic body images / lifestyle in the first place. This to me this is more of attention seeking than promoting body positivity. As you pointed out, 99% of the time they promote their fake life styles.

Why there are never ever any men that are considered "brave" for showing how they "really" look like? I never got this. I get what you are going to say but I am kinda sick of women trying to prove that they are beautiful even if they don't look like models. You don't owe to be pretty to the world. Your beuty is in everyone who loves you and in yourself not in your, by only Hollywood measures, "imperfect" bodies. You are fine, you don't have to prove anything to the whole world outthere.
