While the United States has largely considered itself as the greatest country in the world for the last few decades, the statistics tell us that there are areas where things can definitely be improved.

In military might and defence spending the U.S. is undisputedly number one. But in other areas, more important aspects of human wellbeing such as education, life expectancy, happiness, gender and income equality and healthcare, there are more mixed results.

The U.S. healthcare system in particular is a continuing source of bafflement for many, who are accustomed to a degree of protection against the double disaster of poor health followed by financial ruin.

While American hospitals and medical facilities are world class, they are also incredibly expensive and available only to those able to afford them. We at Bored Panda have compiled a list of examples that highlight the inadequacies of the current healthcare system, while polarised politicians continue to argue about their vision for its future. Scroll down to check them out below, and stay healthy over there in America, y’all.

It is designed by the wealthy who own stock in all of the products, supplies and drugs we receive as part of health care. If they didn't want such a fat margin of profit all of it would be much more affordable.

That's the problem with uncontrolled capitalism, in my opinion. It's fine for such competition when a business is based on non-essentials, but when it comes to something like healthcare, it's just barbaric.

As a health care worker, I can say it is all about profit-from pharmaceutical companies to hospitals and the worst, insurance companies. A revolution needs to happen to take the insurance companies and profit out of health care.

I was recently in the hospital for 6 days. It cost $62,000. My insurance paid $14,000. The hospital tried to come after me for the rest, but my insurance is fighting the "kick back amount." It's utterly ridiculous!!! That was only the cost to stay! Not the doctors fees, testing, medicine, and two surgeries! America has the worst health care system!

I always find it amazing when folks complain about a part of the system or the system as a whole being broken. No its not. Its running just as they want it too. For their benefit. It doesn't matter what political stripe you wear, those that run things care not for us, but only for themsleves and they have the power. And if you believe for one instance that any of them care for you, want things to be better, then you are the problem, not them.

The whole cancer industry in Murica is one of the biggest scams on the planet! And that includes so-called NPO orgs like Susan B. Komen, Livestrong, American Cancer Society, etc. Think what happens to all the high-salaried people's salaries if/when a cancer cure, like marijuana oil, appears.

The worst western country where to live. Mass munders, no more national health care, no interest for ecology , creates wars world wide, native American Indians are still baffled by the government of Washington, forging for petrol on Indian reserves, not filtering toxic waste, capital punishments, KKK STILL. IN ACTION, and this what is called the most advanced and free democracy nation in the world, really you must be bats to believe such hog wash. A sort of President who is going to whine up a 3 world war, this totally insane. May God help u all.

Here in Portugal we too have Universal Healthcare and our Medical System is considered even better than the UK one. Before it used to be 100% free but in recent years they introduced these "one off" fees people need to pay when visiting medical services: $5.41 per consultation in a Medical Center and $21.66 per consultation in a Hospital. The following people are exempt to pay those fees: blood donors; firefighters; cancer/HIV/AIDS patients; people with total "house" income (husband+wife) less than $760.30 a month; pregnant women; children up to 18 years of age; handicapped people with more or equal to 60% incapacity; patients that had transplanted organs; handicapped military and ex-military people with permanent incapacity caused by military service; unemployed people and all their family; people that need continued medical care; and people that suffered domestic violence. We also have private (paid) healthcare systems but the quality is on par with the public healthcare system.

And yet, when Obamacare was in place and there was a mandatory requirement to enroll or face a fine, Americans yelled so loud that it became a political football and eventually was rescinded. Mandatory enrollment is necessary to support a healthcare system. Don’t complain about not having free healthcare if you don’t want to pay for it in taxes or some other way. You can’t have one without the other. Europeans seem to understand that. Americans.........

In Denmark we pay for health care and schools with our I high taxes. And you know what? No Danish are complaining but they gladly pay 39-54% of their pay to taxes. Include me. It's worth every cent because I can go to school, college and university for free. Hospitals are free too and you don't have to pay for your birth, surgery or cancer cure. Imagine how relieving it is! I'm proud of our high taxes.

For our first child we paid a grand total of $40 for three nights at the hospital, food and everything included, in a private room. I'm from Sweden. For our second child we paid $0. Please don't comment "But your taxes are really high!!!" I gladly pay 30% of my earnings for these things. I'm still left with about $2200 after taxes, $500 after rent, mortgage, savings, food etc and I have a low income job.

Because their constitution is outdated. The second amendment made sense when America didn't had an army to defend their country against foreign aggressors, in this case, the British. In some states it was mandatory to have gun, because there was no army...now it's a nonsense, in my opinion.

Because it should be common sense to provide healthcare. It shouldn't have to even be written anywhere. The reason they had to write down that people can own guns (well, muskets) is because common sense says they are weapons, most people don't think the population at large should be armed. Many of them are very stupid and/or dangerous.

Lots of conflation going on there. There's a difference between a right to pay for something you get and a right to have others pay for something.you get. The fact that the shooter did something horrible with his purchases doesn't change the fact that it's not the same kind of right being compared.

There are no gun control laws that work. Not one. None. Gun control laws CAUSE crime by disarming the public, making them easy prey for criminals. Find an area with tough gun control laws and you'll find an area with high crime.

In Poland - you can go to jail if you see someone having a medical problem (generally speaking), and you don't help by not calling "911" (112 or 999). Calling for an ambulance on no grounds = will cost, but nothing dramatic. Rarely punishable, afaik.

Yes, I witnessed a car accident in the USA and the woman was unconscious, I pulled her out of the wreck as everyone else was afraid to touch her in case they were sued, even though petrol was everywhere and she could go up at any moment. When she came round I said I would call an ambulance and she said no she could not afford it

An ambulance cost is only a couple hundred dollars. If you can not afford it; here in the USA they will write it off.

My doctor informed me that there is now a law in Virginia that if you get opiates and benzodiazepines you now need a script for Narcan Nasal Spray. Which is only to be used if you OD & you are dead & someone is giving you CPR & an ambulance is on the way. So I went to the pharmacy and insurance wouldn't pay for it and it was $140. My awful doctor who has been my Primary Care doctor (I Have Crohn's disease and endometriosis and PTSD) and he said I should ask for the Narcan for Christmas. Umm I am on disability my husband works 6 days a week with only 10 days off ALL YEAR. 10. Where I am going to get that money. We didn't get a bonus. So I appealed. My insurance sent me my denial and it said and I quote "Narcan is not considered Life saving Medication." Umm it is literally a life saving med the number 1 used by EMTs. And then they said "You have not tried any other formularies for this medication." I told them you have to be dead to use it! They are going to kill me at 42 & no one cares

In British Columbia (Canada) you get a $180 bill for an ambulance even if it is an emergency. Broke my leg walking friends' dog. Surgery and hospital covered (thank God) but cast, cast socks, crutches, ambulance all 'extra' costs.

Here in Finland every citizen have health insurace because it is paid from the taxes. And because of that insurance also the poor people can afford healthcare. It is funny to see when some Finnish people complain that a prescription drug is 'too expensive' if it costs over 30 euros per month when in USA the exactly same drug is usually 3 to 10 times more expensive.

Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of Americans don't want to pay for the healthcare of others... through taxes or otherwise. My fellow Americans are adamant that what is theirs is theirs and they desperately want to keep it that way.

You're first in infant deaths too. "About 11,300 newborns die within 24 hours of their birth in the U.S. each year, 50 percent more first-day deaths than all other industrialized countries combined, the report's authors stated" http://www.cbsnews.com/…/us-has-highest-first-day-infant-m…/ Also 54th in the world (that's close to bottom of countries in the developed world) for number of deaths per 1000 of live-born babies that don't make it to their first birthday. (5.8 per 1000 live births in 2017). The figures are from the CIA so I think you can believe them. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2091rank.html. Now wouldn't you just think the country with the best healthcare facilities and the biggest spend per capita on healthcare would come in at No1 not a lamentable 54th. What's the CDC and FDA doing about it? Nothing that I can discern.

Deducing conclusions from such aggregate statistics is typically complicated. Many factors could contribute to these statistics- poor prenatal care or poor adherence to prenatal care, high rates of drug abuse, cultural biases, etc. America is a very large, diverse country. You have millions of poor, many living in desolate areas without access to doctors (Appalachian mountains), overly religious who do not trust medical care, you have many illegal immigrants who fear pre-natal care even if they will not be deported to seeking it. Do these statistics include home deliveries, where there is no medical intervention? I wouldn’t be so quick to automatically place all of the blame only the healthcare system. There are social, political, geographical factors at play, as well. Reality is more complex than a bunch of numbers.

I lost a girl I very much loved as a daughter. Almost 3 years ago. She would have been 30 yesterday. There hasn't been a day since I lost her that I haven't fallen asleep crying and woken up the same way. I hate to sleep because all I see is her making me promise she wasn't going to die. If we had money, she never would have lost her kidney and she damn sure wouldn't be dead now. I loved this country once. Now I find myself hoping someone nukes this shithole of a nation straight to hell. We don't give a f**k about anybody without money, we deserve to die. My hesitation at actually rooting for this countries brutal end is Canada. They give a damn about people, it be a shame to lose them. The world needs their imperfect but ever improving example.

French medical care is the best on earth and certainly far better than Canada's. And their beer is much better, not to mention their fabulous wine and cheese and terrific food. They also have the world's best roads ... all seem to have been created yesterday. Also the world's best child care system and fine schools too. The people are quite nice as long as you say "Bonjour!" (or "Bonsoir!") each time you enter or leave ANY establishment or home and every time you meet someone or leave someone. The only real problem is the language.

I'm Australian. I have a chronic medical condition for which I have to get blood tests every few months, have to see a specialist a few times a year and have a procedure once every couple of years. I also have to see my doctor every few months for a script. It costs me nothing. I only have to pay for my medication. If I need an ambulance to take me to hospital, it's free. I would be bankrupt or very ill if I lived in the US!

This may be different now, but ten years ago, my Canadian coworker had cancer. Canada fully paid for his chemo treatments. All four of them. The problem was, it wasn't enough. It was too bad for him, because that's all they could give him under their healthcare laws. He came to the United States and was fortunate enough to be able to afford the remaining treatments. He swears that he would have died had he stayed in Canada. Now, I'm giving just a single example to show that there is no perfect solution to healthcare. However, it's certainly worth discussing.

Yes, for meds she takes at home (long term meds). But first of all - old people has a bit discount for there (many drugs are free) plus there are refundation drugs for most of desiease (for citizen pay small % of full price). Universal Health Care is not perfet, and Poland has issues with that but it will get better soon (goverment decided to put more money in it).

Not necessarily true. There are situations in which healthcare system literally declines to pay for your medicament that helps you get better more likely than any other, just because it's not in their charts, there is cheaper replacement and who cares it has very unpleasant side effects, or just because they don't wanna. It usually happens, when you need very expensive medicaments treating cancer, or when you suffer from some inborn defects that make you unable to care for yourself or when you suddenly need some medical specialist to take care of you because your relatives do need to go to the work to pay bills etc. The only choice then is to sell your house or ask other people for contributions or go to the court and hope to win. Publicizing usually helps.

No lie!! A series of x-rays (3-5) is less than $400. An orthopedic surgery to rebuild a shattered femur is $2,500 to $5,000. The medication is so cheap there is a minimum dispense fee, meaning the shop has to charge "extra" because the monthly prescription amount will not cover the cost of the bottle and lable on it.

Lol, England's National Health Services just announced the cancellation of 50,000 surgeries. I have to laugh at everyone who thinks they aren't paying for healthcare the government is. Governments can't earn one dollar of revenue, it can only tax and spend. The free market is the only remedy for healthcare. But welcome to the 21th century, where logic and sensibilities are challenged by groups that think every should be free.

Of course it is not free in general, but it is free at the point of delivery. So unlike the US, if I need physio, I will get it without worrying how to pay for it. If I need medication I can have it without worrying about the cost. I won't go bankrupt paying for a chronic illness.

I would post my own horror story if it wasn't for privacy issues. Short version: in 2009 my insurer denied a refill for my bipolar2 meds. The cost was over $350/ month and had to be okayed EVERY Month by the prescribing doctor. One refill fell on the Friday before Easter and the dr's office couldn't verify until the following Tuesday. I went 3 days cold turkey. My employer/work friend came to my apartment to check on me. They called the police, who then called an ambulance. All because the amount charged for 30 pills was AUTOMATICALLY REJECTED.

This happened to a very good friend of mine. She was walking home at night at her grandparents house in a different state than she lived. She was crying and a female cop pulled over to "check on her" and when she said she was depressed she was taken to a psych ward and hog tied for 24 hours. She was young but over 18. It makes me so upset and sad to think of my friend in that position. US can't handle medical illness and they really can't handle mental illness. I have a chronic disease and mental issues mainly PTSD. But I still am super careful with how I word things regarding my health.

Don’t misunderstand me, I was a nurse for 35 years. I loved it. But our health care system is so broken! We can go broke just by having a serious illness! And cancer? Forget about it. The few places, or rather, the only one I know of that doesn’t charge families anything to get their child well, is ST. JUDES HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN. No one ever gets a bill for anything. So, keep donating there.

Yeah, have that ninth baby! Well force you to do it. But we won’t help you out once the baby is born! You want to adopt that baby out? Well, we’ll just take that baby from you, and foster it. We hope and pray the family is good, and well then charge the baby’s new family to adopt it. It’s all about money, honey. Money.

No wait a minute, so in the usa only the wealth should have children? Who will pick your garbage, who will clean your streets? What a sad way to see life. I thought the usa was a country of equal rights, guess I'm didn't understand my history teachers when I went to school in San Mateo, CA. They probably made up this part of the constitution.

Kinda curious to know how that happened...I briefly ran over some of the history. Apparently they started having universal healthcare much earlier than that ( late 1800s). I?m gussing the date on this paper is when it was reviews/updated/adapted.

Ah, but the UK NHS probably does have an end date, although it will be tricky to determine exactly when it is, as it will be dragged along, expiring by stages, for several years. It has already started, but not enough of the right people have seen things like this Bored Panda thread to be scared

In Spain "Social Security" (as we call universal healthcare) was first examined under the Liberal government, who set up a commission to examine Social Reform in October 1883. 1900 Labour Accidents Act; 1919 Worker Retirement; Obligatory Maternity Insurance 1923; Forced Unemployment Insurance 1931; Obligatory Old-Age and Disability Insurance (SOVI) 1947;Social Security Bases Act 1963; General Social Security Act of 1966. The right to "Social Security" was enshrined in Article 41 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978. Nor 1986 as its shown in the image

I am 70, worked hard most of my life ( & raised 2 wonderful kids on my own )...I worked for the USPS ( & hated it ), but it had the best health ins. This costs me about $ 350, a month ( even with Medicare). It takes a big chunk of my retirement but I could never have afforded my hospital bills for the spinal surgeries I've had to have in the past 20-30 yrs. Without health ins., my last spinal surgery would've cost over $ 300,000.00...you can't do without ins.!

Not really. I've always said that the US is like a teenager; we think we're awesome and adults are clueless. We "invented" everything even though the other developed nations were doing it before we were born, and we are very serious about our opinions. One day we'll grow up and get our act together and then we'll apologize to the world. In the meantime, we're so EMO right now because reasons (Trump) so just leave us alone! I think most of the people have woken up to the fact it's just propaganda to say "America is number 1" It's a great way to get people to think but everything is fine why would we need to fix anything. Everything is perfect just as it is. That sentiment just is wearing thin as the years go by and more people are now suffering.

Most conservatives are anti-welfare because the welfare system actually hurts the victims who are dependant on this system, and they are most definitely pro-life because we hate seeing the slaughter of millions of unborn children in the womb. Boy, conservatives are monsters ...

Anti-war? You believe that? Anti-war care! From whom do you get your evidence? The children with rickets? Or the starving old people? Even if everyone on benefits was cheating compare the total cost to the total cost of aggressive tax avoidance/tax evasion. Inthe UK it's probably 30 times larger! Which do spend money on to chase? Anti-terror healthcare. My daughter is diabetic. I'm a teacher. We would have gone bankrupt many times over if we had paid the costs. You're bonkers.

In America, that same baby will grow up hearing, that he’s the way he is because the nurse beat his butt after birth, so he grows up, screwed up, and finds the nurse and doctor and kills them! And then we feel sorry for him.

True story: Air Force supply Sgt. wanted to order an aluminum step stool with non-slip rubber feet. Government cost over $9,000 in 1974. So he went to a hardware store and then a Med supply store (Crutches feet) total cost under $10.

This is because of lawyers. If there is a negative outcome related to equipment, they need to be able to transfer responsibility to someone else. That someone has to have met lots of expensive government regulations.

I live in British Columbia. You call an ambulance and say you are having a heart attack they immediately send an advanced life support ambulance. If you say you fainted they send a regular ambulance. IF they get there and you are having major problems the Advanced ambulance is also sent. Same cost 85.

There are different levels of ambulance service care: BLS & ACLS. Most non-medical people do not know the difference. ACLS is the high-level, all bells&whistles-type Care, with paramedic-level/trained provider’s; not just EMT-level/trained provider’s. In some eyes — the same difference between a MD & a RN.

Works just as good as a doctor appt. viruses can’t be cured by antibiotics! One it runs its course, it’s in your body for good! AIDS, herpes etc. Epstein Barr. All those viruses can’t be cured.. so stop going to see the doctor for them unless it becomes serious with a secondary infection. Like the cold turns in to pneumonia.. but.. there is a viral pneumonia, also. So .. read up on your symptoms, ask a nurse friend, but don’t run off to the doctors for a cold.

but in the european hospital, you will share your room with as many people as they can fit into the room. there are a lot of luxuries the u.s. will have to give up for universal health care. like being wheeled from the exam room to x-ray, or someone escorting you there. in some countries it might mean you have to tip each person that treats you or they won't actually treat you.

I had 20 mins of anesthesia for a scope and was charged $5k. Had a panic attack and made many frantic calls to my insurance. The anesthesiologist's bill stated that by state law they didn't have to resubmit the bill to the insurance if it was denied payment once.

We pay, roughly, 33% income tax. Then there are deduction for income from work at 5-8%. Not so funny is the fact that people who get pensions, income from health bennefit or otherwise social wellfare does not get the same deduction as people who work and (in general) therefore earn more money. There are also VAT. 25% in general, except food, travel and litterature. Food is 12%VAT, travel and litterature is 6% VAT. All in all, if you put together income tax and costs för health incurance in US, we probably pay less here in Sweden. Guttorm mention 5 weeks vacation as one factor, but that has very little impact on taxes. Its your employer who pay för those 5 weeks, and that mean only those who work for the state (and County) their vacation from the taxbills. Naturally, there are a lot of people working för the state, though. Most hospitals and the like are public owned, and not private owned.

At first I would like to know the whole story about the bill. No normal birth and even 48h in hospital would cost that much. More important there is special things like cardiology and radiology what where they for? But then still. My sister in law stayed in hospital for one month before birth and the baby one month after birth. The Bill was around 50k € and healthcare will pay for it. This is a dramatic difference

There had to have been some complications with this birth. There's no way this is a standard childbirth medical bill even in the US. Room and Care has to be an extended stay at the ICU for mother and or baby. Also, I don't see any Maternity Ward charges. Is it normally included in Room and Care?

My Brother had a similar bill after he was hit by an illegal alien, while he was walking in a crosswalk. She tried to take off but witnesses blocked her car with there cars and cornered her so she would not run away until police arrived. She had no insurance, etc. Nothing happened to her. My brother spent a month in the hospital and several months in a home recovering and learning to walk again. He had very good insurance but he still had tens of thousands to pay out of pocket.

For comparison: Several years ago, I was in the hospital for 19 days when my kidneys shut down. I got dialysis 7.5 times (the temporary catheter failed and I had to get a more permanent one put in - a surgeon did it on his lunch break in exchange for a coffee from my doctor). My bill? $0 - I didn't get one because I don't live in a third world country. :p

In USA, this is a bill you'd be sent as a formality. The at-fault driver would be responsible. Usually via their insurance company.

    Shari H
    Community Member
7 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

If the driver was insured out the backside part of it would be paid, and only if the driver carries liability, which is not required in every state. Many people carry coverage of 10/20/10, which means your insurance company is responsible for $10,000 per injured person up to $20,000 and $10,000 in property damage. After that the responsible party (the driver) pays the rest (if the injured party is lucky). So if the driver carried basic liability the insurance company is on the hook for $10,000. In Florida (and maybe elsewhere, I only worked in insurance in Florida) a driver is not required to carry any liability coverage, so the insurance company might owe nothing. Good luck waiting on a heroin addict to come up with $7.00, much less $731,000.

Once in California my little brother ate a penny and it got stuck in his throat, rather than take him somewhere my mother pulled it out just by sticking her fingers in his mouth and yanking it out.

you got to be kidding ! for real? I heard about the expensive health care in the USA. But I never imagined something like THIS is possible. I would move to Canada. It is not so flawed. Actually I liked it there a lot. Must be a good place to live without leaving to another continent.

In the olden days, parents would just wait for it to pass the regular way. If it didn’t then they give him a laxative to move things along. None of this everything needs a visit to the ER.

When I was a kid they just let it "run it's course." Parents were told to "keep a watch" for it to make sure it got ejected. Now they feel thy need to go in after it. And incidentally, my dog would find and eat change all the time - we'd have a running joke on how much change she pooped out every day. "83 cents, today!"

Once I watched a news report about the protest against "obamacare". I never understood why the people are against it. And I admit I don't know enough about the whole subject, so I can't judge it. But one woman said to the camera-team something like: "We are americans and nobody tells us how to live. We don't want obamacare".

I’m a pharmacy technician and Obama care isn’t doing anything. Sorry to say it’s pretty freaken expensive. Covers nothing and idk why people think it does? 4K for a drug for a poor patient who has schizophrenia. Her obama care didn’t cover it. I helped her call her nurse as she cried to her about having to go back to the home because she couldn’t afford it. I quit shortly after this. America needs change and it needs to start with valuing peoples lives.

Not true. Under Obamacare, while millions of Americans were covered, millions paid the fine because they could not afford health insurance. I knew one unemployed person and one retail worker who did not get a penny in subsidies under Obamacare. Plans were ... and still are ... excessively hiked in cost (the retail worker spent most of his paycheck paying for health coverage), and offer much fewer features than pre-Obamacare. I don't care what party fixes this mess. It needs to be fixed for ALL Americans ... not helping one group while excluding another.

$27.99 for a flu shot? In Canada, flu shots are free, and available at the doctor, the flu clinics, the pharmacies, and the grocery stores with pharmacies in them. Like right by the front door, right next to the produce.

No, prison rates in the US are high for many reasons, none of them good: Systematic racism that punishes people of color much more harshly and with greater frequency than it does Caucasians, a for-profit system that has a vested interest in greater incarceration rates, draconian drug laws and mandatory minimum sentences, a non-existent mental health infrastructure that pushes many with antisocial behaviors into the judiciary pipeline instead, etc. The lack of social services in general in the US (compared to need) means that many impoverished or homeless people actually commit crimes for access to shelter and food -- three hots and a cot, as they say. But this last group is a very small portion of the overall prison population. The US incarcerates a greater portion of it's citizens than any other nation, including those where political dissent is imprison-able and harsh laws pervade. A shameful attribute for a nation which espouses such a love of freedom and liberty, indeed.

The state closed the psychiatric hospitals that were government funded. A lot of insurance companies don't cover mental health care or those with mental issues are unemployed. People end up getting arrested for various crimes that they would not commit if they were in treatment. They end up in prison. That is one reason our prisons ate overcrowded. There are other reasons,of coursy, but this is one of them.

If it costs more for someone to live a healthy life, and they can afford to pay for it, then they should. That's the rationale behind pre-existing conditions raising insurance premiums.

Personal tale of US health care system. I have a pre-existing condition - MS. Was diagnosed at the age of 21. Was in the work force until 36, couldn't afford health insurance or out-of-pocket expenses, so didn't receive care for a condition that profoundly impacted my quality of life. FOR 15 YEARS. Now I am in year 4 of fighting for disability benefits that I paid into the federal system for the 20 years I worked (started at 16.) The main problem? My medical records have a giant gap in them, so the gov't doesn't want to pay out. The only way I am able to fight it is that now that I live in abject poverty, I have Medicaid, and can go see the docs and get the tests that show lesions in my brain. Shaking my damn head.

If I was in Canada and ran out of it I would have to pay 731,15 zł and in USA 3379,83 zł . Patients in our health care are always complaining that they have to wait so long to have a free health care e.g. you have to wait 2 years to have free operation, but looking at the medical bills and cost of drugs in America I'm very happy to live in Europe.

Epipens in Alberta are $103 and if you get generic crestor 100 tabs will run you around $40, and 100 tabs of synthroid of any strength are well under $50

Erm, in Québec, we have mandatory drug insurance if you're not already covered by a private one (many employers offer that). I've never paid more than a few dollars for an epipen or synthroid.

its not that all americans have a disregard for human life. Only those who are rich enough to afford the "Healthcare". We're still paying my brothers hospital bills from last year. He was in there a week at one hospital but it's still overpriced. What pissed me off is that he went to Urgent care and paid $100 just to be told it was 'seasonal allergies' and less than a week later he was in the hospital unable to eat or drink anything and hooked up to a bunch of IVs and stuff.... Another thing that pissed me off was the hospital that charged us HUNDREDS for a 40 min stay where he waited for 40 min. only for the doctor to say "Oh its a viral infection nothing we can do" and the doctor didnt even come all the way into the room!!!!! Just stood at the door to tell him that!!!!! Our economy is messed up for the poor folks. Kids havin to get jobs in highschool causing them to be distracted from their education...If your not filthy rich...you're screwed basically...

It'd be nice if our fellow Americans would stop voting in people who want to do this s**t to us, though. There certainly are a vast number of Americans who have an utter disregard for human life (at least, life that's not their own). They tend to be the same folks who call themselves "pro-life", ironically.

Americans say they care, but they’re not doing anything to change the system. In my country, universal healthcare has bipartisan support. Even the far right support it. But if for some reason the government were to take it away, there’d be riots in the streets. We wouldn’t stand for it. We would storm Parliament House and tear the place apart if we had to. But Americans just tolerate it.

In Malta, a kidney CT scan costs 230 euro, and that is what you would pay at a private hospital. If you went to the public, it would cost you nothing, but you may have to wait a couple of days to get it.

Different places will charge different prices. Check around and ask what they charge. You can tell them where you want your test to be done! I do this. And realized any place that is attached or controlled by a hospital system, will overcharge you for that scan. A free standing place, will charge much less, like thousands of dollars less! Check it out!

After adjusting for population. Most developed nations spend less tax money, covers everyone and get better results.

I’m so glad both are ok! Belgium is not a s**t hole! Teump is the shithole. If he were in a crowded place without any protection, I think he’d disappear, and he’d never be heard from again, and they’d never find out who did it, and his wife would be so relieved, too.

This is so true. I have three deductibles, the main one and 2 others that have different names that translate to: "Oh, You Still Payin'!" Basically, after the $6K deductible, and the other two are paid THEN the insurance pays, but by that time it's the end of November and it's about time to start all over.

just checked on my government website - would cost me in australia $38.50 and if you are a pensioner $6.20. my heart goes out to people who have to even think about medical bills at a time when they should be focused on getting healthy.

I live in Slovakia (not Slovenia). I found this drug on several local websites (just to be sure). Retail price is 17 458,11 € (aprox 20 200$). We have a healthcare payed from our taxes and the patients get charged 0,00$. If you need this drug, the insurance covers the full costs. Never would have thought we can be up to par with USA in anything, looks like I was very wrong.

I went to check: same drug in my country with UHC system costs per dose 20.000 USD but coverage is 100%, meaning that if you really need this drug you can get it, for free. Without special conditions, additional fees or insurance policies. We pay 15% of healthcare tax deducted from brutto amount of monthly salary.

The med providers and insurance companies have co tract agreement where the former can only charge a certain amount to the insurance customers. So the providers write off some portion of the bill. Which leads to the question of why charge so much to begin with...

If you need open heart surgery, the insurance is ok... but if you have kidney stones, and arm broke, or any common surgeries or disease, the insurance do not not help you anything!!! For those kind of needs, it's the same go and pay for yourself!!!

So sad that this sums it up for Americans'. Why is your country so against universal health care? From the UK and can assure you we are not communists and have had free healthcare for decades; we really do not understand the mindset that there's something untoward about free healthcare for all.

No they are not being fined because they cannot afford healthcare, they are being fined because they refuse to buy insurance. Health insurance under the ACA is subsidized and therefore relatively affordable. People who think they don't need health insurance are the problem. Just let them get sick or be injured, then they'll understand.

It's subsidized, yes. IF YOUR STATE DECIDES TO OFFER IT. Obamacare was/is a decent try, but gives states the option to not provide it at all. Like Texas, where I live. Mostly republican. Fairly leaning towards the "sucks to be you" healthcare plan.

Well, if everyone MUST buy healthcare by law, then why not just increase the income taxes a little, and pay it out of those taxes, making sure that absolutely everyone has insurance? This would of course include those on benefits as well. I suppose that would be too logical and simple, and it would be too similar to the "communist" or "socialist" universal healthcare found in other countries around the world, that while not perfect, seems to be working pretty damn well for everyone.

One of my mother's friends had the problem that whenever the time of year rolled around for her to enroll for healthcare, and even though she lives in california so it is subsidized, there were always complications in the application that led to it not being turned in on time. Then she would be fined for another year of not having insurance, setting her back further.
