In 2010 I made a five-month trip from Sydney to Beijing. During my travels, I met so many great artists and designers that I knew that as soon as I returned home to Germany illustration would be my new path.
I worked on watercolor drawings and portraits, but something was missing and it would take me months to find my personal style. I was looking for a fast and bold way to bring the images and thoughts out of my head.
So I started a series of illustrations called "Mindshots" inspired by my daily life. The title was born from the ideas that often pop out while working, talking, watching a movie, hanging out with friends or while being bored in the doctor's waiting room. Some are socially critical, while others are just plain ridiculous.
My very first Mindshot creation was a bird wearing an oxygen mask. I had this image in my mind for months after visiting Sydney and Beijing with intense smog on my trip. After a few years, dozens of illustrations and positive feedback on my Instagram, I decided to make a book that included my 50 best Mindshots.
Last year I visited a book fair in Frankfurt with a rough draft of the book in my bag and now I am happy to say it is available on Amazon. Hope you enjoy!

This one does not seem too accurate. It is true that people who spend much time in a virtual world are kind of isolated from life to some extent but for some people this may be voluntary choice. They are just more comfortable with computers and technics than other people.

Hey Petra, absoultely! It is not necessarily meant to be critical toward technology or the internet. Actually, when I did this I thought about how much I enjoy spending time by myself, all alone my own world, working on some stuff. On the other side time flies by so fast and you can work for hours or even days without any social relation or seeing any daylight. I see a equivalent memes quite often. This is in our DNA. There can be no success without failure, the equilibrium of equality must always be broken in order for anyone to 'rise above' the norm. The only question is the extent of the disturbance of this equilibrium that we as a society/species allow/propagate in hopes of increasing our chances of becoming those who succeed ourselves. I see this issue not as a good or bad, but as a fact.

Ever since I had a Facebook account, I really can't understand why some people ask for Likes. They don't even get anything from it in return...maybe just an illusion of being liked by people but...yeah? Where's the profit? Sorry but I even find it stupid when people tag you on Facebook just to make you like some entry to win a contest...or worst...get grades! Seriously??? It'll just be about how many people you can tag/mention for Likes even though it's not really from the heart....

There’s symbolic meaning in the ladder, as well. This graphic seems to imply that alcoholism is very deliberate; it took effort to climb the ladder that high and dive in. I, however, feel that it might be more accurate and powerful to depict it as a train of people going up and practically pushing each other off of a slippery slide, as you might see children doing at a waterpark.

Really creative and clear. I came here looking for ideas for a book spine label designating "mental health." I find that a real challenge. (It's for a library collection.) Not any bigger than a postage stamp which has its own challenges.
