I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News So I Illustrated The Best News Of 2018 (And Recent Years)
I'm honestly fed up with all the bad and fake news everywhere. I am not a journalist or an influencer, but I want to use my art to spread some positivity.
I wanted to create an almanac of positive as an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. That's why I want to share some of this year's positive news from around the world in the hope that it brings you some happiness and inspires you to spread some good news yourself!
Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights... we have progressed in so many categories, and it's necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we've accomplished some amazing things in 2018. So although it is hard - stay positive.

This is great. Here in Brazil, supermarkets and restaurants avoid donating food even when they actually wanted to because the food donated continues to be the donor's responsibility, so if, for example, it' poorly transported or stored and goes bad and someone eats it and gets sick, it's your store that will get in trouble even if it was fine when you donated, so they're all scared of donating.
The name of the Brewery is Saltwater Brewery. All of the rings are made out of the barley and grains used in the brewing process. So they are completely edible by humans and sea creatures.
Yes! I hate the argument that "sanitary products are a luxury." They are not, do you want blood all over your pants? All over your house?
I have mixed feelings about pandas.... because people mostly only care about protecting "cute" animals like them. I've read and watched so many times about how "ugly" animals like bugs and amphibians are always getting worse off because all the conservation funds and efforts go towards the ones the public likes... But I guess helping some animals is still better than no animals.
huh in Poland several cities decided to ban fireworks on new year because of animals.
If more people would recycle plastic, that would be a good start. I'm appalled at all the trash I see thrown away, that could have been recycled. And not just plastic. My son and I were discussing today the problem of plastic straws. Why couldn't they be made of a fast-degrading material, or even paper? They are only going to be used one time, and can end up in the sea or landfills, taking who knows how long to degrade.
Serious question, does that sugar tax include high fructose corn syrup? If not, it should. Sodas were unhealthy before, but when soft drink companies switched to HFCS they became even worse.
Ugh, doesn't it disgust people to know that their comfort comes from something ripped off of something else's body?
we need to make ocean plastic profitable, if companies start using it and poor people can harvest it and sell it , it is a win win. Stop creating plastic, reuse.
This is good, correct? The crying is confusing. He should be small and happy.
Unfortunately, E-Cigarette smoking is on the rise, especially among teens due to the flavors that comes in them that teens like :(
I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s. It's really hard to detect in girls for the simple reason that all the emphasis is placed on boys' symptoms. It's the same with heart attacks. Everybody knows about classic male symptoms. Fewer people know how differently it presents in women.
@Jeff: I so agree. In almost every case of school shootings, and other mass shootings, the shooter had significant mental health issues. Often, they had stopped getting treatment, stopped taking their meds, etc. Mass shootings are as much a mental health issue, as a gun control issue.
I just hope this is an actual fact... Because I know that here we have a very fake literacy rate made out of people who can pretty much only write their own names and maybe a few words but are already considered literate for statistic purposes.
I got metal re-usable ones for my family! They're only about 5-7 bucks and usually come with a carrying sleeve and a pipe cleaner.
Bought a bunch for all the stockings in my family this Christmas.
Load More Replies...I'm more concerned about plastic cups, plates, bottles, and bags than straws.
Ableism. How about we not ban something disabled people need to live and instead push laws that force better environmental protections overall, as virtue signaling like not using straws which are a teeny fraction of plastic waste does more harm than good.
This is one of the dumbest "green" initiatives ever. Plastic straws contribute very little to plastic waste in landfills. If they REALLY wanted to make an impact, banning plastic water bottles should be first on the list. ...///... This is the US. We have some of the safest water on the planet. There is NO EXCUSE to buy water in plastic bottles.
I always advocate for drinking tap water wherever it's safe to do so, with a filter if needed. And reuse the bottles if you must buy one at some point. And if you must buy water... buy bigger gallons and use reusable bottles. It's cheaper too - bottled water is ridiculously expensive in the long run.
Load More Replies...why is it so hard to go back to the paper ones? That is what we had when I was growing up before everything was made of plastic
one slurp and they close
Load More Replies...Banning plastic straws just inhibits disabled people who need them from getting drinks properly at restaurants. This is such a superfluous act to make people feel good about themselves for "being green".
Are more eco friendly biodegradable ones available instead? Not having a straw when trying to sip in the car would be awful.
A & W Restaurants in Canada (fast food - burgers, mainly, with mall food courts and drive-through restaurants), has now made almost all of their packaging *compostable*. Compostable is different than bio-degradeable. And we have HUGE municipal composting facilities in my area (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)! The most recent change at A & W is their compostable straws- they are quite thick paper-based straws. The only true "garbage now from their food is the plastic drink lids & gravy lids, and sauce packets I LOVE A & W for being leaders in this -- now we need to convince all the malls to have a separate compostables bin to send to the facility!
too bad their food sucks
Load More Replies...I'm fine with straws not being given standard, but there are disabled people who need disposable plastic straws for medical reasons, and having some around when requested would help accessibility. (As for alternatives, I can't physically lift a cup let alone get a pipe cleaner in a reusable straw, the paper ones disintegrate too fast, and the bioplastic ones seem super brittle and I keep breaking them)
now if we could expand that to the plastic lids and the non recyclable cups.
They actually sell straws made from straw in Germany. https://www.memolife.de/35-strohhalme-aus-stroh-c1049?sPartner=MLGUENSTIGER&campaign=guenstiger
I have to use a straw. I found one that is in a little carrying case that pops open to a full size straw. It's pretty cool. I love the stainless steel ones but they get lost a lot. bummer
I wish it would expand to the entire U.S. At restaurants, I tell the server that I don't want a straw, but the rest of my family takes one and laughs. Usually they say "saving another turtle, are you?" A******s!
The Humphreys reign of terror is over! (Anyone in the UK in the 70's will get the reference). :)
Sings - Watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out - there's a Humphrey about!
Load More Replies...Personally think this is silly. I dislike drinking through metal and should be able to drink through a plastic straw if I wish. What's next? Limiting the amount of napkins I may use?
SandaPanda you can get silicon sleeves for the tip of the straw that protects the teeth. I drink coffee through a metal straw and the sleeve keeps the heat off my lips.
Ill just leave this here. I have a high capacity black assault straw that can demolish beverages at an astonishing rate.
Mostly that's fine but there are a surprising number of people who can't. Various disabilities and illnesses.
Load More Replies...Tbh it's kind of unfair that solar power is currently such a niche product, and easy, affordable solar panels for people to buy would really make a difference
And they do it using a mixture of mud and vegetation..so it's environmentally conscious too.
Good news from a purely ecological point of view. Bad news for the people who make a living in the coal-mining industry. Ironically, it's exactly today that the last coal-mine in my area closes, leaving many unemployed. Maybe someone should finance projects that help these people get new jobs.
Yes, but this is worded a bit poorly, imo. I mean, are they drinking less, or are other countries actually just worse than them now?
FACT: if you throw money and fame at the problem for long enough, it will solve itself
Yeah, and, to no-one's surprise, closely followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Sweden. I was initially shocked to see Sweden so low on the list, but when I saw the actual figures, I realised these countries are statistically so close together, that they'll just keep rotating for the No.1 spot for the foreseeable future. Or, of course, you can take Fox News' word for it that these are in fact hell-holes where Muslim refugees rape anything in sight and where Sharia law will be introduced any day now...
Just walk around Chicago and you'll see what a great system it is! It's been there for years and it's so great to see so many bikers!
As I was reading this, all I could think was that perhaps there is hope for this world.
Always seek this type of news out, it is always there, but the media is doing nothing to make sure we see it. Things are never as bad as they seem to be.
Load More Replies...Ok 2019, you can beat 2018. Let´s get ready to do things even better!
This is so wholesome and really made my day! Thank you, it's been a rough finals week but this really helped!
Thank you! There is so much good in this world... I am not sure why we keep watching the news, which show only bad stuff and make it huge. You are awesome!
Hey Mauro, this stuff is amazing. Any chance you could share your sources? I want to be able to tell people this stuff and then cite a source if they ask.
This was heartwarming to see!! Lots of news outlets use fearmongering and shocking headlines to get more views... while based on truth, it alters the way we percieve the situations. I feel that we need more posts like this. Hopeful things could show us that problems DO have solutions, and they ARE worth working towards :)
thank you Mr. Mauro Gatti <3 finally someone who thinks like me. I really enjoyed reading your article! and the drawings are super cute. Keep going
Several of these are actually kind of scary. "Such and such country was the first to do such and such a thing" and it's hard not to wonder why the heck it took us so long. e.g., Scotland is subsidizing sanitary products? Does that mean that nobody else is??
They also gave me a very mixed feeling. For example the one with women being allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. Don't forget that the activists who actually fought for stuff like this are still held in prison while the prince there is now collecting all the praise for allowing something really really basic.

Number 27, about Sesame Street's new autistic puppet means so much to me. I have autism, and growing up not knowing why I couldn't keep up with the other kids was so frustrating for myself and my parents. I just really want others to know how to interact with autistic and disabled people, and I know this will really help.
Wonderful ideas, efforts and accomplishments. We need to protect the planet and the life forms on it.
I like how 99% of these are outside of North America. Looks like the rest of the civilized world is overtaking us while we sit here squabbling over oil and cheeto looking m***********s
thank you.. i actually signed in to this application just to say a big "Thank you"

I understand that dogs get scared over fireworks. Mine got freaked out at thunderstorms. Hey, my son returned from Afghanistan and when people started setting off fireworks near the 4th of July, he said "I can't lie. Those were a bit unnerving." But the whole reason we set off fireworks on the 4th of July is to remember the actual fire fighting that happened to gain our independence. Now if you want to make any New Year's fireworks, or fireworks after a baseball game on any old random day, cool. But since we can't get rid of thunder, history that isn't remembered is domed to be repeated, and sound is an interpretation of vibrations by the brain... this isn't really something I consider a priority. Can we work on a quick remedy to get rid of poison ivy??
These are every bit as much "news" that informs us of the goings-ons in the world as the negative, upsetting stories.
With such positive news came so real negative comments. People just can't help being pessimistic and suspicious about EVERYTHING! Be happy people and embrace the good and beauty of life!
It was very interesting to read this but it also made me sad that the USA has lacked so much innovative workable answers to environmental problems. There seems to be such a narrow minded approach to keeping our economy solvent and mostly at the expense of people and our environment.
This makes me think that there's still hope for our beloved Earth. I strongly hope and pray that all the people will finally care for the people and especially for the Earth.
