I’m Honestly Fed Up With All The Bad News So I Illustrated The Best News Of 2018 (And Recent Years)
I'm honestly fed up with all the bad and fake news everywhere. I am not a journalist or an influencer, but I want to use my art to spread some positivity.
I wanted to create an almanac of positive as an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. That's why I want to share some of this year's positive news from around the world in the hope that it brings you some happiness and inspires you to spread some good news yourself!
Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights... we have progressed in so many categories, and it's necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we've accomplished some amazing things in 2018. So although it is hard - stay positive.

This is great. Here in Brazil, supermarkets and restaurants avoid donating food even when they actually wanted to because the food donated continues to be the donor's responsibility, so if, for example, it' poorly transported or stored and goes bad and someone eats it and gets sick, it's your store that will get in trouble even if it was fine when you donated, so they're all scared of donating.
The name of the Brewery is Saltwater Brewery. All of the rings are made out of the barley and grains used in the brewing process. So they are completely edible by humans and sea creatures.
Yes! I hate the argument that "sanitary products are a luxury." They are not, do you want blood all over your pants? All over your house?
I have mixed feelings about pandas.... because people mostly only care about protecting "cute" animals like them. I've read and watched so many times about how "ugly" animals like bugs and amphibians are always getting worse off because all the conservation funds and efforts go towards the ones the public likes... But I guess helping some animals is still better than no animals.
huh in Poland several cities decided to ban fireworks on new year because of animals.
If more people would recycle plastic, that would be a good start. I'm appalled at all the trash I see thrown away, that could have been recycled. And not just plastic. My son and I were discussing today the problem of plastic straws. Why couldn't they be made of a fast-degrading material, or even paper? They are only going to be used one time, and can end up in the sea or landfills, taking who knows how long to degrade.
Serious question, does that sugar tax include high fructose corn syrup? If not, it should. Sodas were unhealthy before, but when soft drink companies switched to HFCS they became even worse.
Ugh, doesn't it disgust people to know that their comfort comes from something ripped off of something else's body?
we need to make ocean plastic profitable, if companies start using it and poor people can harvest it and sell it , it is a win win. Stop creating plastic, reuse.
This is good, correct? The crying is confusing. He should be small and happy.
Unfortunately, E-Cigarette smoking is on the rise, especially among teens due to the flavors that comes in them that teens like :(
I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s. It's really hard to detect in girls for the simple reason that all the emphasis is placed on boys' symptoms. It's the same with heart attacks. Everybody knows about classic male symptoms. Fewer people know how differently it presents in women.
@Jeff: I so agree. In almost every case of school shootings, and other mass shootings, the shooter had significant mental health issues. Often, they had stopped getting treatment, stopped taking their meds, etc. Mass shootings are as much a mental health issue, as a gun control issue.
I just hope this is an actual fact... Because I know that here we have a very fake literacy rate made out of people who can pretty much only write their own names and maybe a few words but are already considered literate for statistic purposes.
I got metal re-usable ones for my family! They're only about 5-7 bucks and usually come with a carrying sleeve and a pipe cleaner.
Tbh it's kind of unfair that solar power is currently such a niche product, and easy, affordable solar panels for people to buy would really make a difference
And they do it using a mixture of mud and vegetation..so it's environmentally conscious too.
Good news from a purely ecological point of view. Bad news for the people who make a living in the coal-mining industry. Ironically, it's exactly today that the last coal-mine in my area closes, leaving many unemployed. Maybe someone should finance projects that help these people get new jobs.
Yes, but this is worded a bit poorly, imo. I mean, are they drinking less, or are other countries actually just worse than them now?
FACT: if you throw money and fame at the problem for long enough, it will solve itself
Yeah, and, to no-one's surprise, closely followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Sweden. I was initially shocked to see Sweden so low on the list, but when I saw the actual figures, I realised these countries are statistically so close together, that they'll just keep rotating for the No.1 spot for the foreseeable future. Or, of course, you can take Fox News' word for it that these are in fact hell-holes where Muslim refugees rape anything in sight and where Sharia law will be introduced any day now...
Just walk around Chicago and you'll see what a great system it is! It's been there for years and it's so great to see so many bikers!
Not really, the animals won't be born in the first place.
Load More Replies...To grow this lab meat they have to abort cow fetus to use their stem cells ;) better inform yourself properly before calling this a better procedure for the animals!
In most G20 countries it's legal to terminate *human* pregnancies, and a majority of people in those same countries aren't strict vegetarians. Selling vat meat as unethical because of bovine abortion isn't going to convince that many people, I'm afraid.
Load More Replies...Bad idea, the usa already has too many Frankenfoods. Chemically altering foods may be part of cancer increases
I think lab grown meat is likely to have less chemicals - no pesticide bioaccumulation, antibiotics or hormones!
Load More Replies...Unless you live somewhere in the woods eating only wild plants, almost every crop you eat, wear or otherwise make use of has been domesticated and selectively bred by humans over hundreds or even thousands of years to conform to our desires. And since you're on the Internet, I'm going to guess that you're not living in a hut somewhere.
Load More Replies...Why can't humans reduce their numbers, and thereby reducing the need of killing billions of animals a year?
So why don't billions of people die so animals can live?
Load More Replies...My concern is about the nutrition factor. Since I guess if they put it on the market, it should not taste so bad....... I hope so!...
You don't need meat to have a well balanced diet, honest! If done well, a plant based diet is even healthier, more nutritious and you avoid a lot of diseases.
Load More Replies...lab grown meat or insects the future of meat is going to be very different and while it may sound strange to us our grandchildren will no no different - as long as climate change hasn't killed them already.
I wonder what vegetarians and vegans will do with meat that's literally cruelty-free.
It depends on their reasons for being vegetarian or vegan.
Load More Replies...Um, I don't think I'll give up a steak for lab grown meat. There's something very Soylent Green about that.
Soylent Green was supposed to be disturbing because it was cannibalism, not because it was lab-grown. Technically, Soylent Green would be more "natural" than protein from a vat.
Load More Replies...I’m very surprised that people hear “lab meat” and immediately want to eat it. It’s meat... grown in a lab... disgusting! Nothing about that sounds natural or appetizing to me!
If you're not a vegetarian, you literally eat the corpses of dead animals. Arguing against lab-grown meat on aesthetic grounds is perhaps not the most solid tack to take. (I'm not judging. I eat meat. I just acknowledge that it's not especially consistent to get all prissy about synthetic meat being "gross".)
Load More Replies...Lab-grown meat was in restaurants in 2018. Does this mean in every restaurant by 2021?
Livestock and livestock production is a huge income for rural families. It is also key to long term environmental care and conservation. I wouldn’t list this as a good thing. http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0103-20032015000600063
The people acting so excited over it likely haven't even had good TVP...
Full of literally nothing but animal protein and fat. The chemicals are in the cows drinking polluted water, eating things grown in polluted soil and animal excrement, standing in their own filth and being injected with cocktails of things to pump them up and keep them alive long enough to turn into meat.
Load More Replies...All those people screaming about GMOs. Um I'll stick with "REAL MEAT" (as opposed to soylent green).
Everybody making soylent green comments seem to miss the fact that soylent green is real meat. "Soylent Green is people!"
Load More Replies...I hope this is a success, I'm not a vegetarian, but I feel so conflicted about the animals being slaughtered. I wish being a vegetarian was easier, but we are omnivores by nature.
We are indeed omnivores by nature. Which is great, because with all the variety of food we have in the first world countries it's up to us if we eat meat. If we were carnivorous it would probably be a biological issue. But as high civilization omnivores we're free to decide on a moral base ;)
Load More Replies...And I as a vegetarian will be able to have "fake" meat that tastes exactly the same as any real meat. And it will save the lives of so many animals! My mom is a vegetarian too and we have talked about this before.
Every one of those animals will still be systematically slaughtered and turned into meat, the difference is that when we're done there will be a select few left for hobby farmers and the species will otherwise be extinct. Releasing them would be an unmitigated environmental disaster on an insane scale.
Load More Replies...Everything you eat is "GMO". It has been selectively bred by humans to conform to our desires. Modern gene engineering is in many cases geared toward producing crops that resist pests and drought while increasing nutritional value, thereby reducing the need for pesticides, irrigation and deforestation.
Load More Replies...Great article, thanks very much for help start my day in a positive mood. Its great to see some of the positive things going on in the world and I think if we seen more of this we would want to participate more in these things to help them along.
I wonder what the cattle barons and the food profiteers will think of that.
Again...if you eat meat, you eat animal corpses. You don't exactly have the aesthetic high ground here.
Load More Replies...Not being negative but does that mean the need for keeping livestock will drop? So it could mean you won't see cows and sheep as much in the future
Yes, they will just breed them less. I don’t think a reduction in the cow population is a big concern. They will still be used for dairy, and sheep for wool. Those animals are far from endangered.
Load More Replies...Yeah, it'll be missing those years of antibiotics, steroids and animal s**t to really healthify it
Load More Replies...As I was reading this, all I could think was that perhaps there is hope for this world.
Always seek this type of news out, it is always there, but the media is doing nothing to make sure we see it. Things are never as bad as they seem to be.
Load More Replies...Ok 2019, you can beat 2018. Let´s get ready to do things even better!
This is so wholesome and really made my day! Thank you, it's been a rough finals week but this really helped!
Thank you! There is so much good in this world... I am not sure why we keep watching the news, which show only bad stuff and make it huge. You are awesome!
Hey Mauro, this stuff is amazing. Any chance you could share your sources? I want to be able to tell people this stuff and then cite a source if they ask.
This was heartwarming to see!! Lots of news outlets use fearmongering and shocking headlines to get more views... while based on truth, it alters the way we percieve the situations. I feel that we need more posts like this. Hopeful things could show us that problems DO have solutions, and they ARE worth working towards :)
thank you Mr. Mauro Gatti <3 finally someone who thinks like me. I really enjoyed reading your article! and the drawings are super cute. Keep going
Several of these are actually kind of scary. "Such and such country was the first to do such and such a thing" and it's hard not to wonder why the heck it took us so long. e.g., Scotland is subsidizing sanitary products? Does that mean that nobody else is??
They also gave me a very mixed feeling. For example the one with women being allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. Don't forget that the activists who actually fought for stuff like this are still held in prison while the prince there is now collecting all the praise for allowing something really really basic.
Load More Replies...LOVE it!! Grazi Positive change IS POSSIBLE when enough people put their minds and hearts together. Let's all work towards eliminating endangered animal lists by education and conservation! <3
Number 27, about Sesame Street's new autistic puppet means so much to me. I have autism, and growing up not knowing why I couldn't keep up with the other kids was so frustrating for myself and my parents. I just really want others to know how to interact with autistic and disabled people, and I know this will really help.
Wonderful ideas, efforts and accomplishments. We need to protect the planet and the life forms on it.
I like how 99% of these are outside of North America. Looks like the rest of the civilized world is overtaking us while we sit here squabbling over oil and cheeto looking m***********s
thank you.. i actually signed in to this application just to say a big "Thank you"
This was heartwarming to see!!! A lot of times, news companies broadcast shocking and appalling headlines for more views. This fearmongering, while based off truth, influences our perceptions off of today's world. We need more stuff like this!! I feel that what we need most, is hope for the future. Things like this show us that problems DO have solutions worth working towards :)
I understand that dogs get scared over fireworks. Mine got freaked out at thunderstorms. Hey, my son returned from Afghanistan and when people started setting off fireworks near the 4th of July, he said "I can't lie. Those were a bit unnerving." But the whole reason we set off fireworks on the 4th of July is to remember the actual fire fighting that happened to gain our independence. Now if you want to make any New Year's fireworks, or fireworks after a baseball game on any old random day, cool. But since we can't get rid of thunder, history that isn't remembered is domed to be repeated, and sound is an interpretation of vibrations by the brain... this isn't really something I consider a priority. Can we work on a quick remedy to get rid of poison ivy??
These are every bit as much "news" that informs us of the goings-ons in the world as the negative, upsetting stories.
With such positive news came so real negative comments. People just can't help being pessimistic and suspicious about EVERYTHING! Be happy people and embrace the good and beauty of life!
It was very interesting to read this but it also made me sad that the USA has lacked so much innovative workable answers to environmental problems. There seems to be such a narrow minded approach to keeping our economy solvent and mostly at the expense of people and our environment.
This makes me think that there's still hope for our beloved Earth. I strongly hope and pray that all the people will finally care for the people and especially for the Earth.
