Ferdio is an infographic agency in Copenhagen, Denmark, and they're on a mission to inform the Internet about just how incredible our world really is.

To do so, Ferdio launched Factourism, a project dedicated to sharing facts that are 100% true and 100% fascinating. Tailoring them to fit online, Ferdo is illustrating the facts too, and the pictures are really cool.

Guard Geese

Guard Geese

Geese have excellent hearing, exceptional eyesight, are very territorial, aggressive, and loud. For all of these reasons, some police stations in rural parts Xinjiang Province now have geese guarding at night.

You're dead right! Geese are like the Spartans of the bird world. They are hardcore. My mam grew up on a farm and still has nightmares about their beady rage filled red eyes - and they were meant to protect the farm!

As a reverse on the usual "invented in China, popularized in Italy" tropes is this: Geese came to the forefront of Roman life in 390 BC. Sacred to the goddess Juno, a flock of geese that were kept in her temple noticed a troop of Gauls sneaking up the hill to attack the city of Rome. The alarmed honks of the geese awoke the Roman guards who attacked the invaders and successfully defended their city.

"In a world where fake news, misinformation, and biased content are on the rise, it can be hard to separate truth from fiction. This shouldn’t be the case," a Ferdio spokesperson told Bored Panda. "Actually, the world is fascinating without faking it. Therefore, we created Factourism -- a place to explore all of the amazing facts of our world, combining our love for strange facts with our love for illustration."

Ferdio wants everyone to have zero doubt when it comes to their facts' legitimacy, so it provides the source for each one of them.

Guy Macgregor: This is considered out of the ordinary, not only because she is a female pursuing degrees during those times. She studied multiple fields in the sciences while being one who has professed their eternal allegiance to a greater spiritual being. It can be conflicting and very difficult due to the contention between science and religion, which has long been recognized. She also did that later in life when many of us would be overwhelmed or prioritizing different things, making seeking higher education quite an undertaking. Oh and still being one of two people who actually got to that level in a new field.

"Sure, there already are a lot of fact-based websites and SoMe accounts, but most of these simply lack quality. When it comes to design and creativity, they often use stock images and/or text in a very generic way. The main problem, however, is that these facts are either doubtful or, even worse, non-existent in the first place."

There really isn't a theme that Factourism likes the most. "Our facts can both be hilarious, mind-blowing, horrifying and surprising covering all kinds of topics like nature, culture, brands, science, climate, history or technology," the spokesperson said. "We like that you can explore all sort of things from farts, selfies, pizzas, sweat, Ikea, Nutella, sex toys, you name it."

    Pioneers Of Agriculture

    Pioneers Of Agriculture

Several species of ants, attines, started farming 55 to 60 millions of years before humans did. They favourite food? Fungus. They organise themselves around cutting grass and leaves, bringing them back to their colony, watching after fungus growing on the harvested crop, and then collecting and eating the fungus. The fungus species evolves along with each ant species.

At least in the central south/west part of Mexico where we live, the 'leafcutters' are most active at night, making long trails consisting of incredible numbers of workers between their leaf harvesting target area and their colony. Some ants will climb a targeted shrub and cut at the leaves while others wait on the ground to carry the pieces off to their underground tunnels. They also periodically clean their 'farms' of what is leftover following the fungus harvest and deposit this brown granule just outside their colony. It makes an excellent fertilizer when mixed with topsoil for potted plants etc. Also, the stripped shrubs soon sprout new leaves and appear healthy as before.

    Pop-Up Ads

    Pop-Up Ads

In the nineties, Ethan Zuckerman was working for a website named Tripod. The website was displaying advertising, but the ads were getting in the way of the content and announcers were not always happy with the pages their banners ended up appearing on. When a big car manufacturer was not that keen of having their ad displaying on a page about sodomy the website was hosting, Ethan came up with a solution: a simple piece of code that would open the ad in a separate window. The invention took on, and spread far more than anyone would have wanted, becoming one of the most hated form of online advertisement, and leading browser vendors to implement pop-up blocking features. Ethan finally went public with an apology: “I’m sorry. Our intentions were good”. He believes that “advertising is the original sin of the web” and is now the director of the MIT Center for Civic Media.

    Tiny Dinosaurs

    Tiny Dinosaurs

It’s no secret that today’s birds are descendants to what used to be dinosaurs. To study the locomotion of dinosaurs, researchers from the faculty of science of the university of Santiago realised that by moving backwards the centre of gravity of common birds, chickens, from their hatching to their adulthood, they could get the birds to walk more or less like dinosaurs used to. How? By having the chickens wearing artificial tails.

"Reptiles" has been abandoned as a group defining an evolutionary branch, because... it does not define an evolutionary relationship. If you want it as a group of related species that includes both crocodiles an snakes, you HAVE to include birds. And birds are the closest surviving relatives of e.g. T-Rex. This quora question has some good pictures of the bird-reptile-mammal relationship, as well as some scientific explanation: https://www.quora.com/If-birds-are-technically-reptiles-wouldn%E2%80%99t-mammals-be-too

Chickens are vicious and blood thirsty. The phrase "pecking order" is derived from chicken behavior. If one of them is injured, especially if it is bleeding, the other chickens will peck it to death. So I have no problem with the idea that chickens are relayed to T Rex.

    Rabbit Abilities

    Rabbit Abilities

Not only rabbit can recognise the smell of faeces of known predatory species, but it has been found that they are also able to distinguish the ones that has specifically been eating other rabbits. If an area houses an animal a little too fond of eating rabbits in the near past, then it is probably best to avoid this place for a while.

    Microwaved Grapes

    Microwaved Grapes

When grapes are put in a microwave oven, especially when cut in two, their shape and material refract the waves in a way that eventually ionise the sodium and potassium content of the fruit and create plasma that ignites and takes fire. A popular science-fair/YouTube trick, Canadian scientists have since studied the phenomenon and reproduced it using artificial water beads. They note that the science behind it could serve as a base to develop wireless antennas and superresolution imaging. All thanks to someone who once wanted to eat warm grapes.

A researcher from the University of Sydney who studied a herd of cows for five months established that each cow was expressing themselves individually, voicing their emotions: excitement, arousal, engagement, or distress. In the context of farming, the research concluded that by understanding the different moos, farmers can give their attention to the individual cows who need it.

    The Dangers Of Cleaning

    The Dangers Of Cleaning

Cleaning exposes your lungs to chemical sprays and other cleaning agents, which causes damage to respiratory health in the long term. It is especially true for people doing cleaning as their job. A study found out that over time, the impairment caused by cleaning is similar to smoking cigarettes: “This study suggests that […] long-term respiratory health is impaired 10–20 years after cleaning activities. […] The effect size was comparable to the effect size related to 10–20 pack-years of tobacco smoking.” (A pack-year being the number of packs smoked in a day multiplied by the number of years spent smoking)

I suppose it’s the exposure to chemicals...but then you’re left with a clean house....which is of course healthier than a dirty house. So I doubt the validity of this one.

Wow, so much to unpack in your comment. First, I think you're really underestimating the effect chemicals from common cleaning products have on your health. There are some good non-toxic ones, but if you're using Tide, Windex, 409, Mr. Clean, etc. you're inhaling some really nasty stuff. Also, there is some evidence that overly clean houses are part of why we have seen a dramatic increase in allergies and asthma in the developed world. Homes are simply too clean and it leads to children growing up in a house that affects their immune system in ways that are a problem later in life. Finally, you trusting your hunch over an actual study is one of the biggest problems we face. If you can find other research that contradicts it that would be interesting.

My mom was a cleaning lady and she possibly (hint word because none of us are 100% sure) developed arthritis from using cleaning chemicals/products without gloves. She had no idea of the long term effects until her doctor noticed her occupation and put two and two together. She stated that the chemicals she uses could be the link to her rheumatoid arthritis. To this day her hands hurt, but it hasn't been worsening drastically like it did before. She did start using gloves to clean, but also changed her occupation so... not sure

The chemicals in these kinds of cleaners can lead to immune system dysfunctions like chronic inflammation. Sadly, I'm not surprised that arthritis could come from it. Hope your mom finds some relief.

    US Flag

    US Flag

The US flag, stripes and stars, has been having a similar design since the 18th century. But with the number of states changing all the time, the number of stars had to change too. And who says a different number of stars says a different arrangement, so that they all fit satisfyingly in the blue rectangle. With the addition of Alaska and Hawaii in early second half of the 20th century, there was a need for a 50-stars design. The designer of the winning arrangement, 9 lines of alternating 5 and 6 stars, is called Robert Heft and came up with it as part of a school project. He spent a weekend cutting and sewing his flag proposal, which was accepted as an official flag by congressman Walter Moeller and finally adopted in 1960.

There were different proposed designs and Canadians were very caught up in which one should represent our country. I think we chose the best one, although at the time I wanted the outside stripes to be blue (sea to sea). :-D

    Diamonds Inside Diamonds

    Diamonds Inside Diamonds

Or rather, a diamond can grow around another diamond, although there is only one instance of the rare phenomenon known to us. In 2019, miners in Yakutia, Russia made a curious discovery: a diamond with an internal cavity, holding another diamond. It might be over 800 millions years old and geologists have been coming up with hypotheses concerning how it was formed.

    Voting Rights

    Voting Rights

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station, and previously the Mir station, are not exempt of voting duty. They get their ballot as an encrypted PDF in their e-mail inbox, can cast their vote from one of the onboard computers, and send it back to their voting clerk. It initially required some adaptation in the law down back Earth to accommodate for this derogation, but now people in space can voice their political preference almost like anyone else.

Voting isn't a requirement ("duty") anywhere, as far as I know. It's a very serious right and responsibility, however. It's shameful that such a small percentage of eligible voters in the US actually vote, whereas in some other countries people literally risk their health and lives to vote.

It is a requirement in Australia. There are fines if they find out you didn't vote. I agree though that those of us in countries where citizens vote should consider ourselves lucky that we are able to have a say without risking our lives.

A small study, performed in 2008 in California on ten persons being recorded performing everyday office tasks, showed that they were on average touching their face 15.7 times an hour. If we consider a sleeping time of 8 hours, that’s about 250 times a day during waking hours.

    World's Wealthiest

    World's Wealthiest

Billionaire Jeff Bezos, entrepreneur behind Amazon and richest person in the world, is worth $110 billion. He earns $2,489 a second. In 15 minutes, he earn as much as what an American with a bachelor’s degree earns in their lifetime. In the meantime, many are the Amazon workers who are edging the threshold of poverty. Bezos is notably using some of his money to launch manned space programmes.

It boggles the mind that there are those who defend billionaires like Bezos. He and people like him have more money than they can spend in several lifetimes and it's money made by exploiting employees and other shady business practices (essentially it's stealing). No one needs that much money.

Chris, respectfully, what I'm referring to with 'tax tricks' are maneuvers that are legal, I'm not talking about anyone who's actually breaking tax laws. I'm talking about the majority of rich people, who both try to minimize their tax bill and are paying what they are legally required to pay.

He's only that rich because so many continue to buy stuff from him. It boils down to responsibility, you can't change Jeff, you can't force him to be a good leader to his workers. But you can stop giving him your money and allowing him to continue on his merry way. But that requires thought and choice making. As you spend more with decent companies, they will hire more people, allowing the Amazon-poor to find better work. It all starts with us-the consumers.

    Human Skin Bindings

    Human Skin Bindings

Anthropodermic bibliopegy. That is the proper name for binding books with human leather rather than another animal’s. A morbid practice that was occasionally done in the 19th century and earlier. Some of the resulting books are now conserved in the Harvard Library at Harvard University.

It happened. I don't know how many books were originally bound that way, but I know it happened more than people thought. There was minimal difference to using human v.s. animal hide. The human skinned books creep me out less than what happened during the holocaust. Some of the Jews who had tattoo's were killed and their skin was used for lamp shades. Their hair was used to stuff pillows, and trust me when I say that you do not want to look to much further into that. It got pretty disturbing, especially Ilse Koch. Man, google at you're own risk, but there are more Human remains used for things than a lot of people know. Not like Ed Gein, but still, you'd be surprised.

Intentionally killing a human for their skin for binding is horrific. However, if someone dies and we repurpose their skin it seems like a pretty cool recycling / organ donation process. I personally would love to have a part of me live forever bound as my favorite book when I die.

From outside, “the Manor” in Guelph, Ontario could look like any other strip club. But it isn’t: it offers social housing to people who are recovering from addiction, live in poverty, or are just out of prison; its owner has taken the endeavour to help the poor; and a Christian pastor has been hosting a weekly service there for the past six years.

    Visiting Stonehenge

    Visiting Stonehenge

The prehistoric monument of Stonehenge in South West England was built around 5000 to 4000 years ago and believed to have been a burial ground and to have been used for spiritual purposes. It has since become one of the most well-known landmarks, and has been forever attracting visitors. It’s very recently that the site has been protected: the land has had many owners before finally becoming public, buildings – now removed – has been built near to it, people would chisel off bits of rocks to take home as souvenirs, and until 1977 indeed, it was allowed to climb on the rocks.

Doesnt it bother anyone to think that these stone structures have lasted 4 or 5 thousand years without being vandalized - potentially viewed as a hands off for posterity treasure to be protected and valued. Then we come along being terrorists to precious antiquities - Is it that we have no concept of something being so special that we treat it with respect? Do we not know what respect for things or people means anymore? When did parents stop teaching respect and decent behavior? I've noticed so many illegal or illicit or simply plain wrong actions and over steps these days and trying to figure out when and how it started. Respect for our history is lax in fact most schools don't include the real histories and have been replaced with a softer or totally false version. Stonehenge history included - as someone in this site actually said " what is stonehenge?"

    Timeline

    Timeline

We often think of dinosaurs as all living in a period far in the past. But the Mesozoic Era, as it is called, lasted from 250 million to 66 million years ago. In other words, it lasted almost three times longer than the time that separate us from it now. An early dinosaur like Stegosaurus lived about 150 million years ago. A later specimen like Tyrannosaurus lived around 67 million years ago. As for humans, the earliest australopiths appeared 4 millions years ago.

    Mount Everest Casualties

    Mount Everest Casualties

More than 300 people have died on the Everest since it was first climbed about a hundred years ago. Since removing the bodies is a dangerous enterprise in itself, and a very expensive one, most are kept on the mountain, frozen on location. In recent years, climbing the mountain has become more popular and a record number of permits has been issued, leading the paths to be overcrowded and the risks of accidents higher – meaning even more fatal ascents.

Mount Everest is now overcrowded and even more dangerous. Climbers wait in line at the summit to take selfies, using up precious oxygen and risking running out on the descent before reaching breathable air. Last year was the deadliest climbing season in history. merlin_155...15c84f.jpg merlin_155279730_9a078aae-b874-4b50-9ff4-72a8ec2a93ae-jumbo-5ebda3c15c84f.jpg

    The Origins Of Hello

    The Origins Of Hello

“Ahoy”. The nautical greeting could have been the first thing you say on the phone if the preferences of Alexander Graham Bell were followed. Rather, it is “Hello”, preferred by Thomas Edison and printed in the How-To guides of many early telephone books, that was adopted by the first telephone users. Its use then escaped the telephone lines to become the word we know today. Until then however, “Hello” wasn’t used as a greeting. It could express surprise of call for attention, but was not meant to mean “Hi”.

Bell wanted it to be "Ahoy." You can see this in the Simpsons episode where Homer runs a telemarketing scheme, and Mr. Burns answers the phone that way. Makes sense, given his age.

Our household greeting has always been much like it was on the old farms - when a rider would yell out "Hello the House!" so as not to get shot as he rode up. Most of the men in my family were seafarers, so to hear "Ahoy, Ahoy!" meant they were home again safe.

    Dirty Phones

    Dirty Phones

Most people don’t clean their phone and most people touch about 3,000 times a day. That's a lot less cleaning and a lot more touching than what happens to a toilet seat or flush. A study found a higher amount of bacteria, yeast and mould on phones than on toilets. Keyboards, mice and trackpads are also concerned.

I am sure the study found "mold", not "mould" on the phones. And, as far as "dirtiness" is concerned, in the sense of of potential for a pathological organism to cause an illness, the type of microorganism is likely more important than the quantity.

    Nobel Peace Prize

    Nobel Peace Prize

No Nazi party forcing their way into it: it was a joke. Erik Gottfrid Christian Brandt, an antifascist member of the Swedish parliament, nominated Adolf Hitler as a satirical comment on the nomination of Neville Chamberlain, UK prime minister who had just declared war on Germany. Brandt didn’t mean for his nomination to be taken seriously, and as soon as it was, he sent a letter to withdraw the application.

Her name was never recorded. Her existence is only known because after her death her husband remarried and (allegedly) had a similar, incredible number of children with his second wife (who also went un-named). As far as I know the claim was never verified and was essentially a 'friend of a friend story' from an English merchant reporting on characters in Russia.

This is the number per person. About the same amount of plastic particles are breathed during a year. And the actual numbers are likely far higher. Researchers find microscopic plastic particles about anywhere: air, soil and water; food and beverages. Drinking bottled water for instance lead to more than three times the intake of plastic than drinking tap water.

Fun fact: Some researchers let a caterpillar eat the same plant every day for awhile, and then played the sound of the caterpillar eating the leaves without them actually being eaten. The plant produced toxins when it heard the caterpillar (whether or not it was there), and produced more toxins. My source: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00442-014-2995-6

It may be connected to the fact, that crime is more common in poor areas, and as Walmart is unexpensive store, poor people shopping there more often, and Walmart is being placed more often in the poor areas.

"In a study of 3,655 figures produced between 1975 and 2010, Dr Christoph Bartneck, a robot expert at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, said the manufacturer appeared to be moving towards more conflict-based themes in its toys. Bartneck's study considered the range of facial expressions across various Lego sets – now often in themes such as Star Wars, pirates or Harry Potter."

Gold foil is eaten in India for thousands of years. They are used to decorate the food. "Plating" in modern Western standards. Now, its not the richest country on earth anymore. Therefore that practice is seldom seen.

Should probably be read as "gold is non-toxic". Your body can't metabolize it in any way, so it just passes through. There are a lot of things on that list but it hardly makes them "edible".

And much of what is 'Made in the USA' can, under US trade regulations, make that statement even though it's actually manufactured in places that are US territories like the Marianas Islands. Even though these places are American territories, the American federal wage, labor and environmental standards don't apply. Sad. But, let's face it, most of us will often grab the cheap-yet-useful product at Walmart or Target or wherever if we can. Maybe what the world needs are global labor, wage and environmental standards.

Actually, the Prophet Mohammed popularised the use of the first toothbrush in around the 7th Century, using a twig from the Miswak tree. The twig not only cleaned his teeth but freshened his breath, and was naturally anti-bacterial. It is still in use today, with many muslims choosing to utilise it instead of the usual toothbrush-toothpaste combo, due to its strong connection with religion and hygeine :)

That is a myth, they had lots of words for blue. What they also had was a system of describing things by the lustre as well as colour. So 'the sky was a lustrous as bronze' is more accurate.

The standard coke contains dissolved sugar and so the liquid is denser than water. The amount of sweetener in diet coke is minuscule in comparison (artificial sweeteners are much sweeter by weight), so the presence of an air gap makes it lighter than water.

It's called pearl essence or pearlescence. It's the silvery stuff found in fish scales that's used in some lipsticks, nail polishes, ceramic glazes, etc., to make them shimmery. Most shimmery lipsticks use this.

In the case of my grandmother, once her relatives were located, she and her brother were taken to the post office in New York City with an addressed letter, some food, and rope that was wound between their coat sleeves to keep them together. The postage was paid for the letter and the children were told to stay with the letter. It got them all the way to Kentucky, riding on the mail trains and trucks. It took them 5 days and they slept in train stations and post offices along the way. She was 6 so she doesn't know the cost, but she knows that one postal worker took her and her brother home with him so they could have a proper meal and a bath.

That's actually accurate. A lot of people will do it without thinking about it if they're trying to enhance one focus, basically by reducing or removing the sound input your brain and switch more functions to the optical inputs and sort through it faster. Same how people close their eyes to smell something or listen to something.

I found music necessary when learning but later in life I've found it to be distracting. I think it can be good for calming anxieties which can make you hyper vigilante and over compensatory behind the wheel but if your calm it just serves as another sensory input that will draw your attention away from the task at hand.

Wire wheels are really bad for small animals. Please don't use one as they can injure and kill hamsters, mice, and other small animals. Their paws or tail can get caught among other things. Hamster balls are also bad for some of the same reasons: their toes can get caught in the cracks, their tail can be injured along with them not being able to 'see' with their whiskers (rodents rely much more on their whiskers and noise to sense the world than sight). Using these are common mistakes but please don't let your animals run in a wire wheel or a ball.

Hamster balls are awful things. I'm always amazed when I hear some numpty claim their hamster 'loves it'. Hamsters’ sight is very poor, the senses of touch, smell and hearing are vital means of exploring their environment. Being enclosed in an exercise ball could restrict the hamster’s use of these senses and could compromise their ability to gain information about the environment, which is likely to be very stressful for the hamster.

In the last 10 years panda breeding programs have been doing really well. It just took us a long time to figure out how to replicate natural courtship. Stick a male and a female in the same cage expecting sex and they will just fight. Renting the pandas out helps prevent inbreeding.

Well, first you float, then you sink, then after a few days you float back up again.

They love it so much that they drown in it. Most humane and eco friendly way to get rid of them.

They worn footwraps. It is a rectangular piece of cloth that is worn wrapped around the feet to avoid chafing, absorb sweat and improve the foothold. And they work a lot better than socks because you wrap then to your liking and can add extra buffer in places you usually chaff in boots, so many soldiers complain about new sock policy.

Yeah, like most us. I don't wear them in the shower or in bed for example.

For nine month (sept. 1986 - june 1987) I served in the Romanian Army (Air Force) and I can tell you there were no footwraps. Even in the '70!
