When we hear about bad things happening, especially when many lose their lives at the hands of a few, we need to remind ourselves that people can be good.
"We all have an innate capacity for goodness—and this is the hope for the human race as well as the hope for each individual person in the journey of life," clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Jennifer Kunst, Ph.D., writes.
"Side by side with our destructive capacity is our constructive capacity—our capacity to do good and to be good, our impulses to love, to care, to help, to heal."

According to Kunst, the way to make the most of your life is to harness this orientation toward goodness so that it has more and more influence over your personality.
"In the context of psychotherapy, we might even say that it is the aim of the psychoanalysis to strengthen each patient's good, constructive capacities so that they can be used productively to manage the destructive elements."
However, Kunst believes that at the same time, it is essential to acknowledge and own the destructive capacities because "it is only when there is a bridge between love and hate that humility, authentic guilt, and forgiveness can make way for healing and restoration."

I had a classmate in middle school, we were 13, she got her periods in the break and locked herself in the bathroom. she was crying because she thought she had cancer or something (one of her aunts died from uterine cancer). She had 1 mother, 2 big sisters, so many aunts and it was up to me, a 13 year old girl who didn’t have them yet, to explain what it was and that it wasn’t bad. a trauma for her, the beginning of human’s disappointment to me.
That's crazy! When I was in grade school (back in the 80's) all the 10 and 11 year old girls had a mandatory assembly where we were told about menstruation and safe sex. I still recall us holding in our laughter while the principal put a condom on a cucumber. :) I'm from a very liberal area though, so I'm sure not all girls got the same education from a public school.

I cannot tell you how amazing this is that he did that. For every classroom I have taught in, my first thought is to plan what to do in the event of an active shooter. How many doors are there? Which way do they open? What type of handle/k**b do they have? Can you lock the doors from inside? Are there windows? Do those windows open and what floor are we on? Then I formulate a plan just in case. I only hope I have the ability to follow through if it ever happens to me.
It is an utter disgrace and tragedy that you even have to consider such things.

However before they moved she worked at a high school in OKC which is a huge school district. It's sad that the first thing she did when she started working at the 2 schools in the little town that they now live in, was to map every single cabinet, closet, windows, doors and ceiling tiles that could be used as a way out or hiding place. It became so ingrained when she worked for OKCPS and the active shooter drills, that she needed to know how to protect my nieces and every other student in the school once they had moved and got out of the city. My Sister was shocked that the two schools in this town, where she was working at didn't have ASD's, they only had drills for fire and severe weather. I also would recommend watching some of the documentaries about the insane amount of Cartels that are in Mexico. At this point not even resort towns are safe and there are travel advisories for city and popular vacation spots all over Mexico. One of the many reasons that a lot of Southern states are desperate for stricter border security is because not EVERYONE that comes across that border has good intentions. Oklahoma is the crossroads for I-40 east/west and I-35 north/south and the amount of arrests that have been made for human, sex and d**g trafficking in our state is insane. Sadly that's only a small fraction of what is actually being caught coming through from across the border, so they need to come up with SOMETHING to help stop or slow it down.
Blaming the refugees fleeing from those same cartels, and refusing to have a rational immigration and asylum policy isn’t helping. Nor is calling the people who have legally entered the country to request asylum “illegal invaders”.

What I find interesting is that only few people have the impulse to intervene/help without thinking. I'm one of them, hubby isn't; I'd like to know what makes peolpe that way
It’s actually pretty natural for people to freeze or go into shock when seeing someone having an emergency or being attacked. This is usually a response to fear - the fear that you are too weak to help, that you might be misunderstanding the context and seeing a threat where there is none, or even that intervening will put your own life in danger. It's no different from the reaction categories that people fall into if on the receiving end of something dangerous: fight, flight, freeze or appease. Most can't help their initial reaction and may not know what they would do until tested. There is also the bystander effect - the more people there are, the less likely someone is to do something.
Load More Replies...I've seen this mental reaction play out in real life. My situation was less dramatic. In the US you're only obligated to help a person you have a "duty" to help. So you can watch a stranger's kid drown without legal risk, but you have to try to help if you're the babysitter or the parent, for example. So in the US you can film away most of the time.

Happy Black History Month. Take A Moment To Remember Sergeant William H. Carney, The First African-American Recipient Of The Medal Of Honor. He Ran Towards The Sound Of Gunfire, And After Being Wounded Multiple Times - He Never Let Our Flag Touch The Ground. Remember His Name
A man with INTEGRITY! I wish there were more like Sgt. Carney in the world today.
There are some. They're usually derided by society, until they're needed
Load More Replies...History is slowly opening more of it's chapters on heroic men and women who may not look like the war heroes protrayed by our Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 1950s. It is fantastic to read about folks like Sergeant Carney and to realize that when times are bad, sometimes heroes come in all sizes, shapes and flavors, just saying.
It’s the biggest honor in the military to “save the colors”. Even in defeat you have to save your unit flags from capture. Don’t judge, it’s a military thing.
It’s kind of weird if you zoom out and realize we’re just a bunch of weird fleshy mammal things on a giant rock hurtling through an infinite void - and yet some people think saving a piece of fabric from touching the ground is some kind of incredibly heroic act - but I can see the metaphor behind it.

the amount of will and work needed to overcome addiction should never be disregarded
She didn't have much of a chance to begin with. She started on d***s at 6 and had an absolutely s**t life. Goes to show that it really does get better if you have the willpower
How does one start doing d***s at 6. Six years old should have no clue. Someone close to her allowed, or encouraged her to do that- which is horrendous. She didn’t just discover it on her own. They were available to her. That’ just sucks. She didn’t have a chance. Good on her to break away and stand up for herself.

The dam is called the Belo Monte Dam. The actual story here is interesting. She was able to fight back the building of the dam, and was partly responsible for getting the World Bank to roll back the funding from the project. The engineer in this picture eventually became an executive in the electric company, and in 2008 began pushing for the construction of this dam again. My cousin was a lawyer in the original case for the Kayapo people, but by 2008 he had become very sick with cancer, and passed away in 2009, so I am familiar with this case through him. Tuira was also working to stop the second attempt, but the dam was eventually built and opened for operations in 2016. In 2023, the current president Luis Inacio da Silva, created a new cabinet Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) and it's leader Sônia Guajajara, is an indigenous woman who is using her cabinet position, and the full force of the government to help indigenous peoples fight against these companies in court.

Well done to her! Stupid commercial pilot licensing board in Australia refused to certify a guy (18/19 yr old) because he had autism. He had flown all around Australia on his own on a recreational license before they made the decision. They were apparently going to re-assess after community outrage but no word I could see on their decision.
ASD isn't just one thing. It presents very differently in different people, so to say no one with an ASD diagnosis can fly a plane is completely ludicrous. I guarantee you there have been, and are, many licensed pilots who, if they were formally tested, would be diagnosed.
