It's funny how in places where earthquakes happen frequently coupled with corrupt building inspectors, you have people working from dawn to dusk and beyond trying to get people out. Same in war torn places. Heartbreaking work.

When we hear about bad things happening, especially when many lose their lives at the hands of a few, we need to remind ourselves that people can be good.

"We all have an innate capacity for goodness—and this is the hope for the human race as well as the hope for each individual person in the journey of life," clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst Jennifer Kunst, Ph.D., writes.

"Side by side with our destructive capacity is our constructive capacity—our capacity to do good and to be good, our impulses to love, to care, to help, to heal."

According to Kunst, the way to make the most of your life is to harness this orientation toward goodness so that it has more and more influence over your personality.

"In the context of psychotherapy, we might even say that it is the aim of the psychoanalysis to strengthen each patient's good, constructive capacities so that they can be used productively to manage the destructive elements."

However, Kunst believes that at the same time, it is essential to acknowledge and own the destructive capacities because "it is only when there is a bridge between love and hate that humility, authentic guilt, and forgiveness can make way for healing and restoration."

I had a classmate in middle school, we were 13, she got her periods in the break and locked herself in the bathroom. she was crying because she thought she had cancer or something (one of her aunts died from uterine cancer). She had 1 mother, 2 big sisters, so many aunts and it was up to me, a 13 year old girl who didn’t have them yet, to explain what it was and that it wasn’t bad. a trauma for her, the beginning of human’s disappointment to me.

That's crazy! When I was in grade school (back in the 80's) all the 10 and 11 year old girls had a mandatory assembly where we were told about menstruation and safe sex. I still recall us holding in our laughter while the principal put a condom on a cucumber. :) I'm from a very liberal area though, so I'm sure not all girls got the same education from a public school.

Teaching youngsters about the human body, anatomy, sex Ed. procreation, anything having to do with anything sexual. There are right-wing conservatives here in 'murica who don't want any of this taught. They are creating so many ill-informed teens who are actually MORE likely to get pregnant. And then abortion not being an option, more and more teens will be made into parents, thus less likely to continue their education. And then the cycle repeats.

I cannot tell you how amazing this is that he did that. For every classroom I have taught in, my first thought is to plan what to do in the event of an active shooter. How many doors are there? Which way do they open? What type of handle/k**b do they have? Can you lock the doors from inside? Are there windows? Do those windows open and what floor are we on? Then I formulate a plan just in case. I only hope I have the ability to follow through if it ever happens to me.

My Sister and her family moved to a Rural area with only 2 schools from Pre-K to 12th grade where she worked at both schools until retirement. However before they moved she worked at a high school in OKC which is a huge school district. It's sad that the first thing she did when she started working at the 2 schools in the little town that they now live in, was to map every single cabinet, closet, windows, doors and ceiling tiles that could be used as a way out or hiding place. It became so ingrained when she worked for OKCPS and the active shooter drills, that she needed to know how to protect my nieces and every other student in the school once they had moved and got out of the city. My Sister was shocked that the two schools in this town, where she was working at didn't have ASD's, they only had drills for fire and severe weather. That didn't stop her from training my niece's and the other students what to do in case something does happen, which I know feeling the necessity to do that is incredibly sad.

Our children shouldn't have to worry about going to school and not coming home because they're shot. That makes me sad. I'm afraid to send my son to regular school so he is homeschooled so we can grow up to be a man hopefully will help change the world in a positive way.

Despite the turmoil around us, 83 percent of the respondents think that people are fundamentally good.

Baby boomers are the most likely to hold this belief (91 percent) compared to Generation X (84 percent), Millennials (81 percent) and Generation Z (75 percent).

This might tie to life experience, which can reassure you that people can unify and overcome.

The family paid two ransoms, including getting a loan from a company that specialized in loans for ransoms. Two yrs later, her daughter's body was found. Miriam Rodriguez helped capture 10 of her daughter's murderers. However, Rodríguez was killed on 10 May 2017, the day Mexico celebrates Mother's Day. My wife and her family are all from Ensenada/Tijuana/Mexicali and even though there are is heavy cartel presense, like most organized crime, they don't want to risk their operations doing something with innocent people. There are several short documentaries on Miriam Rodriguez on YouTube that are really good to watch. I also would recommend watching some of the documentaries about the insane amount of Cartels that are in Mexico. At this point not even resort towns are safe and there are travel advisories for city and popular vacation spots all over Mexico. One of the many reasons that a lot of Southern states are desperate for stricter border security is because not EVERYONE that comes across that border has good intentions. Oklahoma is the crossroads for I-40 east/west and I-35 north/south and the amount of arrests that have been made for human, sex and d**g trafficking in our state is insane. Sadly that's only a small fraction of what is actually being caught coming through from across the border, so they need to come up with SOMETHING to help stop or slow it down.

Blaming the refugees fleeing from those same cartels, and refusing to have a rational immigration and asylum policy isn’t helping. Nor is calling the people who have legally entered the country to request asylum “illegal invaders”.

The same generational disparity seen for the fundamental belief in human goodness shows up here too, as 94 percent of Boomers say they've given to a charity, for example, while just 69 percent of Generation Z claim they have.

When are people of the Islamic faith going to rise up and purge themselves of this extremism? I find it difficult to understand why so many people just sit idly by and allow these governments to survive and allow the extremists to live freely among them. When are the truly going to stand up for themselves?

IMO it's short sighted to slander an entire religion because of what some zealots do. I don't support anyone that denies someone their human rights, no matter what religion, creed, cult, group or politics they follow. Judge the actions and who performs them, not the entire group.

It’s actually pretty natural for people to freeze or go into shock when seeing someone having an emergency or being attacked. This is usually a response to fear - the fear that you are too weak to help, that you might be misunderstanding the context and seeing a threat where there is none, or even that intervening will put your own life in danger. It's no different from the reaction categories that people fall into if on the receiving end of something dangerous: fight, flight, freeze or appease. Most can't help their initial reaction and may not know what they would do until tested. There is also the bystander effect - the more people there are, the less likely someone is to do something.

I've seen this mental reaction play out in real life. My situation was less dramatic. A bus I was on ran over a man on a bicycle and him and his crumpled bike were laying in the road behind the bus. My friend and I were at the back of the bus. We were the first ones helping the poor guy because everyone else just stood there gawking. It was before cell phones (early 80s) but the mentality was the same.

In the US you're only obligated to help a person you have a "duty" to help. So you can watch a stranger's kid drown without legal risk, but you have to try to help if you're the babysitter or the parent, for example. So in the US you can film away most of the time.

FFS stop with the male/female pronouns , we are not animals or insects - is it too hard to type out woman/man/boy/girl/lady/gentleman?????

No. If a person identifies as male, 'he' is the correct pronoun to use. The same with female and 'she'. In a situation with two people, one female, one male, it's very easy to keep track of who is who. If there are more people, then yes, please don't just rely on pronouns, use some nouns too. It greatly helps with clarity.

And while filming LOTR the director wanted to explain him some specifics about killing someone (the way you hold a knife? Or whether someone makes gurgling noises when being stabbed? Have to rewatch to remember) and Christopher Lee politely corrected him because he learned it "in the war". 🥹 Source: bonus/extended material/director's cut DVD box IIRC the director himself told that story and conceded to Lee's version of whatever they were filming.

He has a long and interesting life. I was due to meet him but he was very elderly by then, and he had slipped in the bathroom the day before and had to cancel his appearance. Shame as he died a year or so later.

He used his experiences as a commando in WW2 to lecture Peter Jackson in the set of Lord of the Rings. Apparently, Jackson wanted Saruman to scream as he was stabbed in the back, to which Sir Christopher M*********r Lee replied "Peter, do you know what kind of sound a man makes when stabbed in the back? Because I do."

Tolkien and his friend C.S. Lewis were both highly credentialed academics with some serious writing chops. Tolkien especially defined what the fantasy genre is and has been ever since. Precious few fantasy writers can hold a candle to the quality of his writing and the depth of the world he created.

Interestingly, staying optimistic about others isn't just wishful thinking; it might actually pay off. Those who held this belief were not only more likely to have a more satisfying life (84 vs. 70 percent) but also make about $5,000 more annually.

There might be moments when you feel like are the worst beings in the universe. But we can reach common ground, we want to help each other, and something tells me we're going to be ok.

In the UK, the first 10 doctors who died of Covid were all BME doctors, all of whom had trained overseas and came to work in the UK, and most of them had already retired but came back voluntarily to help out front line colleagues. There was a memorial statue put up, and some of their families said that these older doctors wanted to go back and help out because they'd had their lives and wanted to protect younger colleagues.

I think we all know what it meant. And yes, most people know about coronaviruses in general. On the other hand, most people likely did not know that until the Covid-19 pandemic. So there was no reason to point this out unless you're clarifying in an academic setting, in which case this is not the appropriate place or else, it is to sound intellectually superior. Which does not work because, again, this is mostly common knowledge. Instead, you just sounded rude. It's ok, though. We all have made mistakes like this, typically I'm youth; it usually takes experience and being called out to learn to be better. Learning moments like this are vital! :)

I don't know what his badges and medals mean to a war veteran like him, but it's sad that the people in charge didn't have more left than a few pins in a wooden frame and it doesn't heal trauma or keep the nightmares away......these heroic people deserve a high pension and one should name streets, bridges, squares or buildings after them...🤷🏽 🎖️ 🤔

The awards are in an "I love me" box. Most military retirees and many who didn't retire maintain one. It's a visual history of their service and is not given them by the government. They are presented by his fellows or made up by the individual. My wife (retired) has one given by her last command and I (10 years service) have one as well. Nit picking aside, I agree on the pension and the naming rights.

That’s insane. An average of 30 funerals per weekday. I know it’s not all active service deaths. It includes people long since retired, etc but it’s still a hell of a big number.

Why not just have a phone tree or a program where the volunteers are alerted when there is no one attending a funeral. Wouldn't be that hard to just ask whoever the contact person is. Then just go to those? Why go to every single one if the point is to make sure they aren't alone?

History is slowly opening more of it's chapters on heroic men and women who may not look like the war heroes protrayed by our Hollywood stars of the 1940s and 1950s. It is fantastic to read about folks like Sergeant Carney and to realize that when times are bad, sometimes heroes come in all sizes, shapes and flavors, just saying.

It’s the biggest honor in the military to “save the colors”. Even in defeat you have to save your unit flags from capture. Don’t judge, it’s a military thing.

It’s kind of weird if you zoom out and realize we’re just a bunch of weird fleshy mammal things on a giant rock hurtling through an infinite void - and yet some people think saving a piece of fabric from touching the ground is some kind of incredibly heroic act - but I can see the metaphor behind it.

How does one start doing d***s at 6. Six years old should have no clue. Someone close to her allowed, or encouraged her to do that- which is horrendous. She didn’t just discover it on her own. They were available to her. That’ just sucks. She didn’t have a chance. Good on her to break away and stand up for herself.

The dam is called the Belo Monte Dam. The actual story here is interesting. She was able to fight back the building of the dam, and was partly responsible for getting the World Bank to roll back the funding from the project. The engineer in this picture eventually became an executive in the electric company, and in 2008 began pushing for the construction of this dam again. My cousin was a lawyer in the original case for the Kayapo people, but by 2008 he had become very sick with cancer, and passed away in 2009, so I am familiar with this case through him. Tuira was also working to stop the second attempt, but the dam was eventually built and opened for operations in 2016. In 2023, the current president Luis Inacio da Silva, created a new cabinet Ministry of Indigenous Peoples (MPI) and it's leader Sônia Guajajara, is an indigenous woman who is using her cabinet position, and the full force of the government to help indigenous peoples fight against these companies in court.

Marsha Maitland was the nurse who correctly identified the thallium poisoning. - -- - It really bugs me the way that in lists like this if a person's name is missing, it's most likely to be a woman. Please, if you see something like this, do a bit of digging attribute the person properly.

Thallium has often been used as a murder because it is so difficult to identify.

Well done to her! Stupid commercial pilot licensing board in Australia refused to certify a guy (18/19 yr old) because he had autism. He had flown all around Australia on his own on a recreational license before they made the decision. They were apparently going to re-assess after community outrage but no word I could see on their decision.

ASD isn't just one thing. It presents very differently in different people, so to say no one with an ASD diagnosis can fly a plane is completely ludicrous. I guarantee you there have been, and are, many licensed pilots who, if they were formally tested, would be diagnosed.

Is that Monkey D Luffy from One Piece? No wonder the shield couldn't hold then.

What I don't understand is that the lettering "QCPD" seems to imply a US police department (non-English speaking countries would almost certainly have the letters in a different order) yet the shield says "Pulis".

Wait, how does one kill a shark with a jug of water? Do you mean hitting it with the jug? Or do you drown the shark somehow with the water in the jug?

He caught the shark using seagull remains as bait. When he hauled it aboard, it attacked him, so he beat its head in with his water jug.

you should read the story behing this pic. These hyenas are completely dependant, if he release them they wiould just die. Easy to judge some really particular picture of something happening in a place so different.

Heading is wrong. Not a pet. Fully wild hyena that some guys feed. If the hyena wanted they could kill him in seconds flat. Read up on it before making dumb comments.

we all do, but the truth is, it won't survive in the wild, and the intersection between humans and wildlife in Africa is a long and complex one, considering ALL humans are (until we find other sources reported and vetted in peer reviewed science) out of Africa.

This is only heroic if you know what cause he was protesting for or against, and if you agree that he was right to do what he did. Rioting is rarely justifiable, IMO.
