Sesame Seeds
I don't know what I thought sesame seeds came from but it wasn't this.
I thought so too and wondered if sesame seeds were inside Okra.
Load More Replies...Wowzers before this I actually had no idea how they were harvested. So learned something new
Haha I wish we knew these things when we were young. It is a weed in my place. Some Place in Africa, Kenya.
Peanut
I grew them when I was in primary school - oh the joy when those yellow flowers bloomed
When we lived in Kenya and Tanganiyka,,we grew them in our garden, just be for they were ripe,we collected them and boiled them until soft, then we would sit outside in a circle peel them to eat.yummy! Everyone for themself.
When I was around 6 years old, I asked my grandfather how peanuts were grown. He showed me by planting some in his garden. One of my fondest memories of him.
Great post. Peanuts are my fav. Lived in Portales, NM, Once know as the Valencia Peanut Capital of the US. The BEST peanut butter!, and roasted in the shell!
For those questioning the first photo. I doubt they were grown on the rocks for cropping, but they are planted as a non-crop grown cover as well. Here is a photo of a flowering peanut plant with young pods. Peanut-pla...8a4ca1.jpg
Ah, now I understand why it's called "earth nuts" (jordnødder) in danish :)
Cranberry
I heard somewhere that they test the cranberries (to make sure they're good) by bouncing them! O.o
not a cranbarry, it's Vaccinium oxycoccos L. (cranberrys are Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.)
Yep, because the cranberries actually have little pockets of air inside, which is why they float.
I love everything about cranberries how they look, how they grow, how they taste and they are very good for your health.
Is this a manmade plantage? And where do they grow? Its a pity that it is so hard to find cranberries without added sugar..
Stores normally sell cranberries whole and in a bag. You can make your own cranberry sauce with as much, or as little, sugar as you like.
Load More Replies...Cashew
This one is even more baffling than cinnamon. "Well, John appears to have died after eating one. But there's just GOT to be a way to prepare those green squash testicles so we could all enjoy them."
you can eat the yellow fruit just above the cashew nut , its very tasty. Very popular in south India, where village kids throw stones at these to eat cashew fruits .. the yellow / orange/ red (very ripe and sweet ) fruit bit and then collect the raw cashew (green nut) in bulk and sell them to the local trader for money. Or you can bbq them in fire , it release a puss before the cashew inside gets toasted , which you then open and eat. Guess thats why cashew nuts are expensive.
it's highly poisonous and has to go through tons of processing before it can be declared edible
No tons of processing needed. All you need to do is roast it, then crack it open and it's ready to eat. I live in Africa. I should know. :)
Load More Replies...The yellow fruit is fleshy, edible but not something that I'd say is delicious. We slice it and sprinkle a bit of salt before eating. We roast the shell to get the nut out. When roasting the shell we also make sure that no chickens are around as the acrid smoke can make them sick.
We eat and make juice from the yellow (it can be red also) part of the cashew here in Brazil. But the cashew nut (as we call it), cannot be eaten raw.
Pistachio
that color makes me remember one of carnivorous plants
Load More Replies...I'm from Iran,so this one was not a surprise to me.Actually we also eat it like this(I mean when it is not ripe yet)and it's delicious.
You can see here how they are related to another kissing cousin of poison ivy. That being the mango tree.
They are so tasty. . Now I know they are also pretty as they grow.
You gotta get them off the trees before the worms get to them!
Cacao
Proof that chocolate is a vegetable and therefore beneficial to my health
actually, chocolate contains a lot of magnesium so it's great for migraines and muscle spasms. you're welcome
Load More Replies...It's not a vegetable 😂 If it grows on the tree and has seeds in it it's a fruit
Cacao is the fruit that chocolate is made of. The fruit contains "nuts" that are dried and roasted. from them cacao butter is made and with it chocolate is made.
Pineapple
The first pic looks like someone just placed a pineapple on top of a random plant
That's exactly what I'm going to do when my friend is on holiday and I'm plantsitting for her 😂
Load More Replies...you can cut the top off a pineapple and plant it and hopefully it will grow and give you this
I did that, my plant is huge but no fruit yet.
Load More Replies...I believe if you plant them like this from the fruit itself it takes about seven years to bear fruit. :D
I’ve grown two from cut off pineapples. Spectacular plants but three years later, still no pineapples 😫
Brussel Sprouts
Some farmers markets sell them like this... It's super cool when you can get them like that
Load More Replies...Grammar Nazi here. Its actually Brussels Sprouts, as in the city of Brussels.
Not really. It is original Dutch food. It is called Brussels Sprouts only the way the Belgium people cook it. And that's very different from the Dutch people!
Load More Replies...Yes, they look like this. Except, when ours grew, there were larger spaces between the sprouts and it had a denser crown. Creatures of all sorts will use this as a shade tree.
Vanilla
What's with the Braille-like dots at the bottom of the pods? Anyone care to explain?
It's probably the farmer putting some form of branding on them in case they get stolen
Load More Replies...Next to saffron and cardamom, vanilla is the world’s next most expensive spice. Growers are known to “brand” their beans with pin pricks before they can be harvested, to identify the owner and prevent theft. From: http://www.cookiesitalian.com/page/1021420

That is money hanging off that vine - farmers tattoo them to deter theft.
The CFP franc (called the franc in everyday use) is the currency used in the French overseas collectivities (collectivités d’outre-mer, or COM) of French Polynesia, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna. The initials CFP originally stood for Colonies Françaises du Pacifique (“French colonies of the Pacific”). This was later changed to Communauté Financière du Pacifique (“Pacific Financial Community”) and then to the present term, Change Franc Pacifique (“Pacific Franc Exchange”). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CFP_franc
Comptoirs Français du Pacifique (CFP) is a currency - just my guess

Load More Replies...Almond
My kindergarten has almond trees. Those petals fall down like the cherry flowers in Japan. Only white, not pink. But equally beautiful.
It is also so delicious when it undergrown, we call it "çağla" in Turkey
Well, almonds are related to peaches, cherries, etc.
Load More Replies...UK too cold to grow these properly, maybe in the South of England but not in the Midlands.
We had an almond tree that produced in Surrey. Used to love them but very hard to get them out of their green coverings, which we used to do because we couldn't wait until they were properly ripe :-)
Load More Replies...Some kind of almonds (the bitter kind) are rich in a particular kind of enzyme that turns into cyanide when ingested by your own body, so 7-10 of them can kill a man. Anyways, only the sweet kind is sold in shops , for obvious reasons :) Those in the pic are sweet one, bitter ones have pink flowers.
Actually the bitter ones are sold in at least Sweden as well. They are needed in some of our classic sweet things.
Load More Replies...Saffron
And that's why saffron is so scary expensive. There are only two stamens per crocus, and they have to be carefully harvested by hand, one at a time.
three stigmas not two stamens.. just sharing as caring aunt messy..
Load More Replies...The part we eat (stigmas) also makes a fantastic yellow dye.
Load More Replies...Are these the same crocusses that you can just have in the garden? I have a million of those.
Look at her fingers, saffron picker fingers. They're so stained. Saffron is more expensive than gold
Kiwi
"work" yes... well sit under the trees with a book..
Load More Replies...I lived in a place where some pubs had outdoor settings with kiwi plants growing all around and on bar overhead. Once an overripe kiwi just splashed on my table and into my beer :D.
A kiwi is a small flightless bird, native to New Zealand. The fruit is called kiwifruit, one word, like grapefruit. 🇳🇿
Saw this at a restaurant in Portugal. You had to walk through a tunnel of kiwis to reach it
We have miniature ones in our garden. (in northern Germany!!) Everything about this plant looks fantastic: the leaves, the flowers. And edible fruit (although a bummer to peel, since they are about as large as gooseberries.
we definitely don't grow on trees , the people or the bird ha haa. Kiwifruit is the real name. Used to be known as Chinese Gooseberries
Coffee
It's like peaking behind the curtain... I just assumed it was made from wizardry
No magic. There are similar photographs of meat before it's dead flesh...
Load More Replies...but the best, or at least most expensive, coffees get eaten by an animal first and then you get the bean after it has been "passed"
Coffee cherries are actually really sweet and obviously they pack quite the caffeine kick :)
I wonder what those flowers smell like. Because coffee smells like heaven, even though I can't drink it.
Cinnamon
Who'd have thought my favorite spice looked like tree mange. Hats off to that first crazy guy who said, "Well the tree seems to be dying, but let me just get a taste anyway.."
I want a cinnamon tree in my garden so it will smell like Christmas all year round!!!!!!!!!!
cinnamon is called "kayu manis" in indonesia ... it translates to sweet wood ... if you chew a bit of it's bark for a while it gives out a subtle sweet taste
The cinnamon called in hungarian "fahéj" . In translation mean "tree peel". So this is obvious in my country, despite of the tree can't grow naturally.
But there's true cinnamon and the cheap imitation stuff most of us are used to. The real stuff is a little pricey, but so worth it.
I love cinnamon. And the weirdest thing is that I like to chew cinnamon sticks!
Don't you wonder who was the first person who said, "Geez. I bet if I eat the bark off of that tree it will taste great with sugar?"
Pomegranate
It looks like it was taken at night with a very bright flash. It makes it look a bit surreal, separate from any surroundings.
Load More Replies...If you look at the fruits you can see that there are 2 to 3 sources of light. The photographer put some lights around and took a shot at night.
oh yay that's the only one I already know, I've seen them grow on the seaside in croatia ;P
Artichokes
Keep in mind once the blossom opens it's too late to eat the artichoke, you eat from the unopened bud (love them!)
Banana
not a very accurate depiction. its more of an artistic photo than one which shows how they grow.
This is beautiful!! :) I've seen while bunches of bananas before but this is the part I don usually get to see. Thank you!
Whoops I meant whole bunches, not while bunches. :)
Load More Replies...In this picture, the bananas are still small and green. after they grow, they fall in bunches from the tree, which is not a tree but rather something similar to a palm tree or a gigantic bromelia.
Wasabi
The wasabi in sushi and stuff like that is fake wasabi. It's engineered to be hot. Real wasabi isn't close to that hot.
Load More Replies...I want to try real wasabi. Here we only get dyed horseradish. But it does the job.
Oh, I get it. Or looks like a dildo. Ha. So funny.
Load More Replies...Black Pepper
Actually, the only difference is that white pepper has the outer skin removed before drying. The outer skin turns black when drying, and the outer skin colors the inside a greyish color as it dries.
Load More Replies...black pepper, the fruit of the Piper nigrum plant a tropical vining plant that grows 12 feet tall They will ripen from green to red and can be harvested at these different stages. Most gardeners will harvest peppercorns when they begin to turn red. Dry peppercorns in the sun for about three days. They should turn black when completely dry. Grind them up to make black pepper. Remove the red hull to have white peppercorn, which has a milder flavor. Green peppercorns are harvested when still green. BurrowingN...f98e26.jpg
Quinoa
various colors—from white to red or black, depending on the cultivar.
Avocado
Oh, they grow on trees. I don't know why, but I always assumed they grew near the ground like strawberries. The more you know.
Asparagus
Actually, the white ones are the same part of the plant as green but they get covered up with hay or some other materialw hile growing and transporting.
Load More Replies...Mango
Hat color would you prefer? I'm sure the tree takes requests... ;b
Load More Replies...It is a different variety of mango..we call it "apple mango" here..
purple mango??all I know it's green then became yellow .never seen the purple one before
the mango tree is huge, large and tall. the mangos that fall from the top can hurt someone's head or car very bad.
My great aunt had a huge mango tree in her front courtyard in the city of bangkok
Dragon Fruit
It probably why dragon fruits are expensive. You have to fight a cactus to get one.
Yeah, super cheap over here too.. so it depends where you're at.. kiwis and blackberries, and blueberries are expensive coz we don't grow them here.. they're imported..
Load More Replies...Dates
Hmm, not how I remember them. Damn, I've been out of the dating game for a long time.
it takes many years before they fruit and you have to have a male to pollinate the females
Recently an old type of dates that was thought to be extinct was grown again. It's a. 2000 year old seed scientist tried planting and it actually started growing. This specific date is described as the most delicious of all in old literature. It's going to be interesting to follow the plant.
they cut the stalk with a tall, sharp saw. the fruit falling on the roof is a trippy sound. they're really messy if you don't have them cut.
I suddenly remember this from Robin Hood, Men in Tights :p 9-Robin-Ho...515da1.jpg
Persimmon
Every Fall, my brother and I try to pick enough of these to make persimmon nut bread; it's a yummy way to enjoy the season here in VA😋
Capers
The little green flower buds are the capers. The small unripe fruits are eaten too. In Dutch they are called 'caper-apples'.
In sicily we also eat the plants boiled with vinegar
Load More Replies...It's actually the flower bud that is pickled and eaten. Not sure if the ripe fruit is used?
Starfruit
Vanished from the shops here - my daughter loves these. She's in mourning.
Jabuticaba
This is an indigenous (and delicious) brazilian fruit.
Load More Replies...this is a kind of berry, with black purple skin and a white and very sweet flesh inside. It is delicious and it makes wonderful jam and drinks.
The German word for this fruit is ''Baumstammkirsche'' which means ''tree trunk cherry'' so Germans (knowing this name) shouldn't be surprised to see them growing like this :D
Tea Plant
The tea tree camellia sinensis can grow like 17 meters tall. But is trimmed to stay below 2 meters, or 6 feet, for easier access to leaves. I dont know if "bush" is what I'd call it exactly.
Load More Replies...They all come fom the same plant - camelia sinensis ;-)
Load More Replies...What kind of tea? It is not tea tree. That is a different plant, with thinner leaves that you cannot make hot tea from.
Throw back childhood. It's like sit on library and read an ensyclopedia or walk with my friend into a garden then climb the tree pick the fruit and eat them wow i'm miss my childhood
Peanut : its not the flower. That is actually a grass which is planted in a palm oil field. Sorry. I can't helped it but comment. Wrong fact.
Peanuts do bear flowers as seen in the picture before they form the seed underground.
Load More Replies...It's time for a fruit joke! Beware of falling sausage fruit, gardeners fear the wurst.
When u say surprising pics I just wonder what's so surprising about this to someone here in Africa who has grown up seeing these fruits. Please start posting interesting issues other than boring some of us because honestly u have started sounding so boring just like your name suggests; bored panda
