My favorite section of the 'Guinness World Records' book was always the biggest things. I marveled at the Blue Whale, the skyscrapers vying for the world's tallest and trucks with wheels the size of a house.

The most important part, the thing that really makes you say 'wow' is the scale. You can't really appreciate the sheer size of something unless something familiar is placed alongside it for comparison. We here at Bored Panda have compiled a list of things that are even bigger than you probably thought. From wombats to wolves, these 'big' things are actually freaking huge! Scroll down to check them out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Many years ago, my husband and I volunteered at a raptor rescue facility - we fostered babies at home, but also went to the facility to feed rehabilitating adults and clean their enclosures. My husband was attacked by a bald eagle while raking the enclosure, and has some nice talon scars on his shoulder, but the talons were nowhere near this big, thank goodness. I've never seen talons that large, but we only have two types of eagle where I live - bald and golden. I wonder what type of eagle is pictured?

It's not fake, it's just that saying it's just a generic eagle talon is dumb. Eagles come in many different sizes. This is the harpy eagle, one of the largest living species in the world. Not quite the same thing as, say, a bald eagle talon.

I've seen this before, or well not inflated, so this is fascinating. Horse innards are all surprisingly huge...especially the guts, you don't expect that much guts either (before anyone asks, I used to work in a zoo. The horse had been terminally injured and the owner gave the carcass to the zoo to dispose of. The horse went to the wolves for a good half a year, huge horse).

    Cactuar Jon
    Community Member
7 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It will be for research. The lungs will have been taken from a recently deceased horse and they will be pumping pressure into them for whatever reason, usually to train and develop knowledge. Or, it could be the lungs are part of a post-mortem to determine the late horses death.

Well, it is not uncommon that humans outrun horses over great distances and humans lungs are a lot smaller... Guess these lungs have more of a benefit in a shorter distance where VO2max is more important. What Im saying is that lungs are not that important for great distances.

Story time! My husband grew up on the west coast, I grew up a city girl in the east. He took me to Yellowstone a few years ago and I wanted to see a wolf SO BADLY. We were driving past a field and I yelled "STOP! Is that a wolf?!" He slowed down and looked, said "No, that's a coyote." I wasn't convinced. "Are you sure? How can you be sure? I think that's a wolf." And he said "Trust me - if it were a wolf, you'd know. That's a coyote." Fast forward to many hours later, and found ourselves driving down another road. Around a pond to the right a lot of people with cameras had gathered, so we decided to pull over and see what it was they were gawking at. However, we had barely slowed down when a full grown, entirely black wolf stepped out in front of our car. My response? "Oh." His response? "Yeah."

This is exactly what happened to us. We've been seeing some exceedingly large coyotes around our place in the past few years, some with much darker coloring than usual too, of course we wondered if they were wolves. Then we were riding in the mountains of Eastern Oregon and a wolf crossed the road in front of us. Yeah, totally different!

We were riding motorcycles through Alaska and headed back home through the Yukon Territory, running along a wide open and quiet highway early one morning. An oncoming semi truck flashed his lights and suddenly there was something right in front of him, I honestly didn't think it was an animal because it was so big. My brain finally realized it was a moose - one tall enough to be looking in the cab right at the driver. We'd seen tons of moose before this, but none up close and none this large. It was mind-boggling.

On a fishing trip in Alaska we where driving around all pissed off at the slow driving locals. We asked our guide why people did 15 under the speed limit and he just said "Moose" we saw a photo collection at a local gas station after that showed the aftermath of a impact and its ALL BAD. We drove really slow after that

I never realized how enormous moose are until I moved to Alaska. I was attending the University of Alaska at the time, and another student got trampled to death by a moose on campus, no lie. People would warn you constantly about running into them on the road, because apparently their eyes don't reflect light, so you might not see them in the dark (I never have verified that that's true; it's just what I was told).

Worth reading this book: The Agony and the Ecstasy (1961) is a biographical novel of Michelangelo Buonarroti written by American author Irving Stone. Stone lived in Italy for years visiting many of the locations in Rome and Florence, worked in marble quarries, and apprenticed himself to a marble sculptor. A primary source for the novel is Michelangelo's correspondence, all 495 letters of which Stone had translated from Italian by Charles Speroni and published in 1962 as I, Michelangelo, Sculptor. Stone also collaborated with Canadian sculptor Stanley Lewis, who researched Michelangelo's carving technique and tools.[2] The Italian government lauded Stone with several honorary awards for his cultural achievements highlighting Italian history.

All of the tallest trees in the world are indeed giant sequoias, but Hyperion outranks the General Sherman by far (379.7 ft for Hyperion, compared to 275 ft for General Sherman). As a California native who has seen many trees like this and even lived next door to two, this doesn't seem like such a big deal. That is what familiarity will do.

Last year the "Pioneer Cabin Tree" in California fell from a storm. It had a tunnel that had been driven through with cars and buggies over the years. It was believed to be about 1000 years old. What a shame.

Holy sh*t!!! And I live in the middle of nowhere in a damn forest in East Texas. I know we have them, but I've never actually seen one in person, Thank God. I've seen every other animal you can think of, from deer to possums, rabbits, armadillos, squirrels, raccoons, etc. and so on. Oh and birds of every kind, (Year ago, I had just gotten a little bitty dog, she didn't even live long enough for me to name her, because she was taken by a damn hawk). But, regardless of the wild boars, the armadillos who tear up my garden, and the hawk that took my dog...there is no way I want to move back to any city. Been there, done that.

At night, I sometimes used to drive out to climb the fence at a local wind turbine installation on some hills up in the lakes, and stand directly underneath the blades. The deep thrumming whoosh as each blade would pass was intense, and it was very hard not to duck and cower despite knowing I was quite safe. After a while of my eyes acclimatising to the darkness, I would just be able to make out the blurry shape of something whirling by, leaving a ghostly trail of afterimages and sound. They sure feel big when you're right next to them! An experience I wholeheartedly recommend! Wind turbines are magnificent!

I was just reading in a book last night about medicine, and when a scientist from the mid 1800's couldn't get a human foot to dissect, he got a bear's foot and did it instead, since they are so similar. It was someone famous, but now I cannot recall who it was.

Very true. When I was doing my summer forensic field school, we had pictures of a case near my college where a pedestrian found what looked like the lower torso and legs of a teenager. When the remains were taken to the morgue, the pathologist laughed and told them it was a bear. Someone had removed the claws. Without them, it looked like human feet and legs.

No, data cables are fiber optic and actually pretty small and light stuff. the actual fibers are just a few millimeters in diameter, with a mantle of plastic and steel wires. the whole cable may be around the diameter of a garden water hose.
