45 Overpriced Things That People Avoid Buying Because Of How Expensive They’ve Become
The cost of living continues to soar in many places across the world. For example, the typical American household spent $709 more in July than it did two years ago to buy the same goods and services.
Interested in what drives this number, Reddit user Just_Some_Troglodyte made a post on the platform, asking everyone, "What is horribly overpriced?" It immediately went viral, and as of now, has over 5.7K replies. From groceries to funerals, here are the most popular ones.

Groceries
It is so stupidly expensive to buy groceries right now. Even if I just need a small list, specifically for the dinner I’m making that evening, it’s always $50–$75. I feel like in the past two years, groceries have skyrocketed.
In Australia, Woolies posted a 12+ Billion profit. Coles 9+ Billion. Yuck foo to both of them.
Yuck foo sounds like a Chinese dish.
Load More Replies...When items I use regularly come on special, I'll buy several (if use by date permits). I also check out the meat section every time to see if a close to use by date has been marked down for a quick sale, then I'll pop it in the freezer if I can't use it that night
You are my people. 100% on this. I’ll also go through my store looking for clearance deals - produce, cleaning, health and beauty, canned goods. And if I can find an electronic or Ibotta rebate to stack with a sale price, even better. I regularly save 50% or more on groceries by shopping the BOGO sales and using coupons and rebate apps (U.S. here).
Load More Replies...Grocery prices are crazy. Someone, somewhere is making a fortune off the rest of us and we have very little power to do anything about it. Too many people simply don't have the time to shop around and punish the overchargers.
Part of the problem is that Kroger has been methodically buying up other grocery businesses for the last 10 years ago. You may think that you're not shopping at Kroger's because they don't charge the names. As a result, they basically have a monopoly on grocery prices; there's absolutely no incentive for them to lower them. Oh, and it means that every store carries the exact same products as another.
Load More Replies...Corporate greed. Companies like Armour meats have had record shattering profits, which they don't pass on the consumers OR their employees.
A lot of it's down to price gouging, I'm looking at you Unilever (never buying your products again).
The cost of groceries have grown so much my daily meal budget it $8 a day... I've lost so much weight that I'm lightweight embarrassed...

But it’s weird why. I think social interaction with strangers has become so guarded with negative expectations in totally mundane interactions , you just sort of expect poor outcomes.
Yeesh, you're telling me. Just going up to someone and asking for directions or anything will give you the almighty stare they think you're about to axe them to death.

Gasoline. So sick of hearing about record profits by oil companies almost every quarter.
The fact that these companies have the audacity to boast about it to the public...
To me, and I have pushed back, is my conservative rep in US congress telling me the current president is to blame. My pushback consisted of reminding him of the RECORD profits of "Big Oil".
Load More Replies...IF this post was written by someone in then US, you don't know how good you've got it. Try UK prices. When I was on holiday in America, I actually though the decimal place was in the wrong place, the prices were so low compared to what we have to pay...
You're right. When I discovered what you guys in the UK are paying, I was shocked!
Load More Replies...And Biden has nothing to do with causing all this inflation. COVID supply side got messed up to cause the inflated prices, but plain greed prevents the prices from returning to normal again. In fact Biden tried to enact an inflation fighting program that the Republicans blocked.
But that sure sounds better than the truth and unfortunately many people believe our literal President is to blame for everything under the sun.

Concert tickets.
Ticketmaster gave me a $75 service fee. Why does it cost $75 for you to send me a digital ticket when these venues are probably paying them to sell their tickets anyway?
I still remember Pearl Jam boycotting Ticketmaster... Wish more people listened then....
I know right?! Pearl Jam was one of the only artists that would try to stand up to them and that was in the very early 90's. They even testified in front of Congress about TM's monopoly back then and no one would listen to them, if they had we wouldn't be in this mess now!
Load More Replies...Usually, Ticketmaster also owns the venue, too. They're a monopoly.
What TicketBastard does should be regarded as criminal - because it is.
Load More Replies...I don't know why they don't just build it into the total price. It's not like we can buy the ticket anywhere else and it would p**s people off less if they hid it.
Just concerts in general. I nearly panicked during my first concert. I couldn't hear myself talk and didn't think anyone could hear me at all. I could sort of make out what they were saying but not quite. Which made it very difficult to find myself. I was sitting in a short row of 8 other people but ended up having to get up for them 30 times during the whole show because of how much they drank. Then they were getting pissed off with me sitting in my paid seat. The lights were blinding and made it impossible to see any of the band members on stage. I have to say it was an experience, though. Just never again and I didn't feel the $120 ticket was worth it.
im sorry that happened to you. Please keep in mind that most concerts are not held in big venues and do NOT cost 120 bucks.
Load More Replies...I refuse to go to any concert that uses Ticketmaster. There are a lot of quality shows that don't cost the price of a first born son.
Diamonds. Contrary to popular belief, they’re not a rare gemstone and their perceived value is almost entirely artificial.
Blame Debiers. They've had the monopoly since slavery was still legal.
These are more expensive to make than to mine natural diamonds. But cheaper to buy. Proves that the price of diamonds is hyperinflated
Load More Replies...The values of everything is technically artificial. Diamonds are not really that interesting. They're clear, colourless and more like the baby's breath of jewellery.
Whew! I’ve always felt like an oddball not liking diamonds. I like COLOR, and diamonds have none. Everyone’s always made me feel as if something’s wrong for me in being meh about diamonds (though I feel they make terrific support stones for my ink sapphires!). Thanks for making me feel normal, uh, StrangeOne. (I was typing that sentence when I looked up to get your name and suddenly the sentence felt weird. ☺️)
Load More Replies...I actually never understood the value of any gem stone. It's a rock. I never understood the value of gold either. Most gem stones and gold to me are useless and a waste.
Among other attributes, gold resists oxidation and corrosion, it's a fantastic conductor, and makes excellent reflectors in various application in space. Gold fantastically useful. I can almost guarantee that the device you used to see this post has some gold in it.
Load More Replies...And they still look like a piece of glass. If you need a an expert with a magnifier to tell if the rock you wear is real - no one else will. I get using diamonds for cutting, but if you need one of the hardest substances we know of to avoid wear and tear of the a regular jewelry you wear - what life are you living???
So true, if I were to purchase a gemstone I would much rather have a sapphire or emerald or something give me some color!
Load More Replies...Personally, I don't care what the gemstone in my jewelry is. Real or fake, as long as it looks good. A couple of my rings I wear on a daily basis are $20 Walmart specials and still going on strong. Oh wait, let me add, the jewelry must look good and not turn my skin or the jewelry's metal green/black over time.
Subscription plans.
Five dollars per month doesn't sound so bad, until there are 10 of those you have to use, and every one of them has an 'ultra-premium' tier for 10 dollars that has all of the feature things you actually care about.
Our rule is sign up for one subscription until we're done with that one. But lately we're trying to go the free route. Tubi has some of my favourite shows and zoechip has That 70s Show I'm binging on with my daughter. That plus youtube, and the 200 movies we have at home is a lot of media to last us a long while. I'm often busy working or doing other things anyways.
The only thing I'm subscribed to is the TV package of my internet provider, for two reasons A) It's a good deal with the bonuses I get for being a customer since nearly 20 years and B) I'm too afraid to climb on the roof to install a dish
Several years back I got on the Sling bandwagon. It had the channels I really wanted to watch (unlike the 20+ shopping channels on cable) for $15. 6 months in and Fox Sports is dropped (my baseball games) then Nat Geo is dropped, pretty soon (and 1 or 2 increases later) over half of the channels I bought are gone, but the price keeps going up. Screw them.
Here's a life hack for you, keep all your subscriptions on a dedicated bank account at a bank you don't have your savings with. Every few years, close that account and open another one elsewhere. Cleans out any subscriptions you forgot about.
nice one - but in some countries they can still come after you and torpedo your credit history ('cos you stopped paying them so you owe squillions)
Load More Replies...I've paid for three or four months of one streaming service, to see specific programs. Otherwise, I watch Roku, Freevee, Tubi, and Pluto. Between them, there's always something on.
I'm pretty much the same. Stick to only 3 or 4, but will sign up for a trial if there's a specific show/movie not available elsewhere. But only if I can complete my binge before the trial runs out.
Load More Replies...considering there is a subscription for everything... yepp. most are not even 5 bucks but sometimes 10 or more. and then 3 or 4 will even be much.

Anything for weddings. If you say "wedding" to any vendor or business, the prices go way up. It's ridiculous.
Me and my fiancé are trying to plan a cheap wedding. Yeah, we are going with the eloping idea right now.
My parents got married by the county Sherriff in my dad's front yard in the '70s. Still together after almost 50 years.
Civil ceremonies: Less muss, much less fuss, and you start off with more cash in the bank and much less stress.
Load More Replies...Cheap weddings = best idea. Use the money for something else you can both enjoy, an apartment or a nice vacation.
I got married this year on our 10th anniversary - so we just told everyone it was an anniversary party. And if it wasn't, who would know? Right near the time, once prices were agreed I said "oh we're getting married that morning as it's you know, a big anniversary". They didn't change a thing. Mind you, it was a very low key wedding, 18 person registry office, small pub lunch then party with buffet in the evening - we set aside a drinks budget and other than that we asked for "no gifts, save your money for the bar". It was perfect, no pressure, and a blast
I just want to sign the marriage license and plan a small party with his family in his country, and my very, very small family in my country. I know some people are going to balk they're going to miss out on some sort of ceremonial, traditional moment they expect to be included in, but it's not their wedding and they should remember that I really don't like being center of attention.
Depends what you want your wedding to be. We got married in 2015 and spent under $1000. We rented a nice secluded picnic shelter at a state park, bought practical suits we could wear again, and we and our friends did everything we could by ourselves (food, decorations, invitations, etc). The only other thing we paid for was the cake and it was just a nice party cake, not a "wedding cake"
Son & soon-to-be DIL are doing the courthouse nuptials this coming week. Neither wants to spend big $ on saying "I do." Spending $ on a honeymoon, and saving for a house.
Insulin
In America...
It's so much better now than it was 20 years ago. It's still really bad but before the turn of the century Type 2 was really bad. My roommate, who is type 2 cried when his monthly insulin weht from $500 to $50 per month. THANK YOU OBAMA!
Was offered a job in Boston, looked into the costs involved with emigrating from the uk (I’m type 1 diabetic) and found out it would have cost me north of 80,000 dollars a year to in basic terms keep me alive which was 10,000 more than the offered salary, no insurance companies I approached would give me a policy due to it being an existing condition, really did make me wonder how people manage and I guess the answer to that is that they don’t manage at all
Insulin costs in America have come down noticeably, but there’s still more to do to make it more accessible. I hate that I end up seeing so many patients who come in because of problems with their diabetes and the most common issue is that they don’t have any insulin at home..usually because of costs..
People have died because they couldn't afford insulin. Where are the "pro-lifers" when you really need them? Oh, that's right - they care about only embryos and fetuses, and the already born be damned.
The average in America is $60ish/month for insulin. I pay $180/month for 30 days of one seizure med, with insurance. Plus $200/month for neurologist appointments. Everyone is getting screwed by the medical industry.
thanks BP for getting a good depiction of someone injecting insulin. Good stock photo choice.
All life-saving medication. My COPD medication for 30 days is over $300
Women's self-care/cosmetic products. It's the same exact stuff as men's just with a different smell, but it costs SO much more. Don't believe me, read the ingredients.
And in my experience, it doesn't even work. Also, the packaging is excessive (thick non-recyclable glass jars, bottles with pumps that don't reach the last 10%). Hate it.
Thick, non-recyclable glass jars? You mean ice tea glasses??
Load More Replies...I believe this- tried it. Bought hubby face cream, bought my face cream. Same size, same brand, same promises…everything! Difference was, mine was red bottle, his was orange. Mine was 16$ more than his and smelled different.
It's the "pink tax"...same product, different packaging, slightly different scents sometimes. The women's product will always be more expensive though. My ex would buy the unscented men's version.
Load More Replies...Accept the fact that you are aging. It's natural. Trying to hold on to your youth is nonsense. It doesn't work, and all you do is giving filthy rich people even more money.
You can get arrested if you try to hold on to your youth and she doesn't like that
Load More Replies...I don't get the point of those roller things. There's no benefits to using those over massaging your face with your hands. All that "anti=aging" bs is all the same as using a regular body lotion. Just a different scent, sometimes. It's all temporary effects. Moisturizing your face will, of course, hydrate the skin, and that will reduce any wrinkles. But once it's all absorbed your skin looks the same as it did before. Make up is horrendous on skin and likely aging you more quickly, as it's so drying and irritating.
About 10 years ago I bought a load of Gillette razor blades, a new range had been released and they dropped the price massively (£5 for 8), I'm still working my way through them now. I gave my wife about 10 packs, which she put "somewhere safe", and as with everything she stores safely we've never seen them since.
I only have that problem when I store things in places that I know I won't forget 🤦♀️
Load More Replies...Supermarket brands are every bit as good as expensive brands, they're cheaper because they sell much more. There's no need to spend a fortune to avoid dry skin!
Check this out! Most of those containers aren't even full! You're only getting an amount equivalent to (at best) a fourth to a sixth of the container's size!
Get your dermatologist to write a prescription for retinoic acid. One tube will last two years. That is all you will even need to keep your face looking young. A pea drop size every other day will do it.
Retinoids can cause other problems with skin. It's only for certain skin types. Never give this advice. And doctors will not just hand out prescriptions for retinoic acid.

Airbnbs are through the roof. I used to get great deals for under $100 for nice places. Now, it's impossible to find something decent under $200.
When I was a lowly unpaid government intern in 2017 in another state, I really wanted to explore. I managed to find so many $20–$25 Airbnbs. They were rooms in people's actual houses or their basements, and so many of them made me dinner. Now, it's $130 a night for a literal shed in Kansas and another $150 for a bullshit cleaning fee. No thanks, I'll sleep in my fucking car.
I won't use an Airbnb. If I go on holiday, I want someone else to look after my room, clean, make the bed etc... I do that stuff every single day at home, a holiday is to get away from 'that stuff'
Air bnbs are also causing a major issue with common folks getting housing.
Load More Replies...For a while AirBnBs were less expensive than hotels or even motels. I have stayed at a few. Now I'm back to hotels and motels. Except there is one AirBnB in Asheville, where I have stayed many times. Maybe because they were one of the OG AirBnBs they are still reasonable. Another bad thing AirBnB has done is encourage investors to snap up houses and use them as AirBnBs, thus denying housing to those who need it.
They've taken away many rental suites in my area driving up the price of rent.
Off to a hotel 2moro and am looking forward to having my room cleaned, beds changed, clean towels and a breakie handed to me each morning and its cheaper than any Air B&B in Ireland at the min
Heard they are still cheap outside of the USA. Inside, forget it. Think I read an article where some providers are getting down right mad at the others for charging outrageous prices and fees and say they will ruin everything. Hotels aren't complaining though. Also read that some landlords that purposely leave an apartment vacant so they could make more money on Airbnb are now complaining no one is using them anymore and thus losing income. I say good.
I've slept in my car many a night while crossing the US. And I'm an old woman who travels alone.
What is the purpose of the cleaning fee if a) one has to clean or b) there are signs everywhere basically stating you can't touch, taste, or sit on anything?
Funerals
Mortician here. Go to a privately owned family mortuary. They actually give a shit most of the time about what families want and are generally more flexible than corporate mortuaries. Private mortuaries rely on returning families so they have to do a good job to survive.
NEVER go to an SCI location. I worked for that company for two years too long, and it's astounding how little they cared about people. They had NO issue nickel and diming everyone while doing the bare minimum if that. They regularly buried people without their belongings and never told the families. They had numerous occasions where the body was not ready for a funeral, bodies were used as doorstops, people were put in the wrong urns, etc. They do not care about you and are no better than car salespeople. Family-run mortuaries do what they do because they care.
SCI=Service Cooperation International (I had to Google that one)
My dad didn't want a funeral or anything associated with it. We chose to have him cremated wearing his favorite t-shiry. A national funeral home wanted R20 000 upfront to collect him from the hospital and do this. A small local business charged R8000 and offered to let my mom pay it off. I understand it's a business but to pray on grieving family and profit off their grief is disgusting.
When a long-time friend of mine passed in 2016, instead of a funeral we had a personal memorial service. We gathered in the meeting room of a small hotel so some people could spend the night, and told amusing stories about him. That is the kind of "funeral" I would like to have. Better yet, my friends and family can get together at a beer bar or brewpub so they can enjoy some good brewskis.
Load More Replies...I used a family-owned crematory/funeral home when my mom passed. Went to pick up her ashes and the gentleman came out with a large, black garbage bag and started to hand it to me. I remember thinking "Affordable is one thing but this is insane!". He saw the look on my face and immediately stammered "No, NO, this isn't your mother. There was a blanket with the body when the coroner picked her up and we thought you would want it back." He looked so embarrassed and I started to laugh and then he did too. Awkward moment but it helped me get through a very difficult task.
Sooo glad I kept reading. Was pretty shocked there for a moment.
Load More Replies...Funerals are a rip-off. It cost us about $4k to have my mum picked up from the hospice, cremated and a death certificate issued. That was it. No embalming, cheapest box, didn't even need to change her clothes (all my mum's wishes). Oh, and the ashes returned in a plastic box. I dread to think what an actual funeral would have cost. We then held a celebration of life at a local pub which probably cost a few thousand (100 guests cos it was covid days, invite only). Beats a funeral when people you haven't seen in years come out of the woodwork for a free feed.
We never had a funeral for my grandmother - just cremation, and scattering of her ashes at favorite places of hers.
Load More Replies...If I ever write a will, I'm going to be ask for my body to be left out for the scavengers of the woods and high deserts I was born in. Circle of life.
I don't want a funeral. To rent, RENT a casket for my mom's viewing, it cost $6,000. Wtf!! One day, rented and reused. If she had known the price, she definitely would have told us to put her on the floor in a cardboard box!
There is the opposite end of weddings I posted about... As my mom would say "they get your coming AND going!"
After what we went through losing my Dad and the funeral expenses in 1984 it took my Mom 2 years to pay off his service. My grandparents picked everything out, swore to help my Mom and then stuck her with the entire bill, even though she had 6 kids at home and was trying to find a place for us to live. There was stuff going on I'm not going to get into, but my Dad's parents were horrible people. After she paid off Dad's funeral Mom bought a prepaid funeral plan and even with that and already buying her burial plot and head stone it still cost an additional $3000.00 because the cemetery did not allow prepaid open/closing services when my Mom passed in December 2020. If it wasn't for that we would have been screwed, my Mom always worried that something would happen to her while us kids were little. She didn't want us going through a repeat of Dad again so she took care of everything and had money set aside for final expenses, especially since she didn't have life Insurance.
My mom bought plots for all of us when we were all quite little so most of us have that part taken care of. I say most because her parents bought two of those from her, so for us kids, it's now on a first served basis. She's getting buried in a prepaid plot next to her grandfather per his wishes and will. Between the two of us (mom and I), we have managed to maintain life insurance to cover the burial costs for her, myself and the 3 youngest of the 5 kids we've been raising together (my nephew, 2 nieces, and now 2 great-nieces - the 2 oldest now married). I wish nobody should have to worry about the insane costs of what to do with loved ones when they past. Please everyone, if worried about costs for loved ones when you pass, make your wishes known. My father said he would have felt guilty for cremating his mother if she hadn't made the arrangements years before passing.
Load More Replies...McDonalds. It was made to be cheap and fast. Why am I spending close to $5 on fries? That's when I realized corporate greed was getting bad
Wendy's has 4 for $5. Jr. bacon cheeseburger (or something else), small fries, 4 chicken nuggies, and either a drink or a frosty. Not a bad deal, especially since it's almost $6 for just a crunch wrap supreme at Taco Bell.
Load More Replies...It's almost $5 for a regular cheeseburger where I live! For my family of 4, not even buying meals, it's close to $30. I can spend the same amount on take out and it lasts 2 meals! We stopped eating fast food...
Probably for the best. As I have gotten older, I have started paying more attention to what is in the food I eat. Fast food is expensive, convenient garbage and does more harm than good.
Load More Replies...This has nothing to do with corporate greed. It's supply and demand and inflation. And recession too.
McDonalds is crazy expensive now and worse quality than ever before. Went to Burger King and they got a 2 small burger meal for $6.99. For under $20 we were able to get 2 of those meals, plus the french toast sticks and brownie sundaes. That was some good eatin' that day.
They pay rock-bottom wages, and employees are subject to wage theft.
Load More Replies...Local joints without a corporation behind usually provide better food for that prices
You have to get creative at places like McDonald's. Ordering the $3.50 bundles or $8.00 baskets saves money as does using the app.
Like so many products and services, we keep spending our money on them because we feel we must have them, and in fact we may not need any of them. A bit of an addiction we all face. Until an extremely large group of buyers get together to boycott the companies because of their out of line pricing, the corporations will continue to raise prices (their profit point increases are more important than increasing prices to cover the costs that provide the products apparently). But we fail to truly understand we do need gasoline, groceries, and medical services more than our desire for concert tickets, entertainment toys, or fast foods. If you are on a limited income, vote with your dollars of which stores/companies will appreciate your concerns.
The housing market.
Without inheritance you are damned. Or you have to be a millionaire. It is like they want us to be homeless :D
Yeah exactly. It seems like they think everyone makes a 6 figure salary. It's ridiculous
Load More Replies...At this point I don't care about owning a house. I'm used to renting. As long as I have a place to live I'll be happy.
I get your point but it may become a problem if you lose your job or when you grow old. In my area, you need to prove you earn three times the monthly fee for your application to be accepted, and prices are crazy. So if the landlord wants the house back at an inconvenient time for you, this may mean trouble.
Load More Replies...When housing has ceased to be a place where families and individuals live and has become a financial product from which it is necessary to obtain a huge profit demanded by the clients of real estate funds.
Blame the banks for that one. They are the ones charging such high interest rates on even a 15 year mortgage . And then foreclosing on you if you miss more than one or two payments. And from what I gather from my own research is they just print money out of thin air which just makes your dollar worth less and less each time they give out a new loan. They sure as hell don't have any money on deposit for all the loans they write.

You can now buy a modest 800 sqft house on a tiny lot, for $500-600K. We bought our house 3.5yrs ago. The value has now doubled in price.
I'm in WA state, a POS shack NEAR Seattle (like hour plus away) can be almost 1mil. It's insane cause "it's cheaper to pay a mortgage" yet a house/down payment is impossible to do. Renting can definitely be nice since there aren't the responsibilities that come with a house. Toilet breaks? Water heater dies? Call maintenance. Having immediate neighbors sucks though.

Just saw Oppenheimer at 11:00 am on a Sunday. $43 with a popcorn and soda.
This is why I don’t go to the movies. And I have four kids. My three girls want to see the Barbie movie, but I know it would cost a month’s worth of rent to take them all.
This is why hardly anyone goes to the movies. I don't know why they don't drop the cost of the food, they'd get more customers, surely.
I don't get why you consider the snacks such an integral part of the experience. You could just, you know, watch the movie and then go eat afterwards.
Load More Replies...I take my niece and nephew to the cinema a few times a year. We never buy anything, we just go to the supermarket and get a bottle of whatever they want to drink and a bag of M&Ms to share between us.
When I cared for children years ago, we would go to cheap movie day (Tuesdays back then), and I'd bring drinks and snacks in a bag. It was quite cheap doing it that way.
Load More Replies...Here the daytime showings in movies are quite cheap, so if you have free days during the week it's quite affordable. Also there's no need to sneak in your own snacks, because you can bring your own.
Stop eating and drinking for 2 hours? You don't know me at all.
Load More Replies...BYO food and drink. Here in Europe popcorn isn't that popular. And drinks are mostly bottles. You buy a family's amount of stuff in the supermarket, for the price of 1 person at the theater.
"Europe" ...In Germany it's 0.5l or bigger paper cups mostly and popcorn or nachos. 1l Coca Cola+ 1 snack is about 8-12€
Load More Replies...Last time I went to the movies was 8 years ago. Way too expensive plus they come out on streaming services or cable so quickly that I'm fine just waiting.
So am I. I will wait years for it to come out on cable or one of the free over the air channels here in Texas . I'm not paying 10$ just to sit and watch a movie anywhere. And that was the price last time I checked which was quite a few years ago.
Load More Replies...The snacks issue is why I love a drive-in theatre. When I was a kid, my siblings and I took our bean bags and watched outside. My mom would make hotdogs and bring the fixings and sides and drinks. Some of my fondest memories are from drive-ins. My brother and I were going to open one once we were older. Unfortunately, he didn't live to be older because he died due to doctor negligence. Makes me sad to think about what people are losing out on.
We are lucky to still have a great drive-in theater close enough to us. It's so popular that the line starts 2-3 hours before it even opens. Which actually increases the fun. You get a kind of tailgate party going on in line, then get in and start all over again with the fun.

I swear that it would be cheaper to melt some platinum and pour it into a printer cartridge than to buy some regular printer ink.
That's why you need to buy an Epson EcoTank. The ink lasts through literally thousands of pages. I bought one in March 2020, went all the way through school and didn't buy ink again until January 2022. Plus, when you do buy the ink, all four bottles are, like, $50.
Inkjets are terrible for running out/drying up ink. Get a lazer jet. Cost more to start with but the ink doesn't dry out, so if you don't use it much, it will still work when you next go to use it.
I agree, I bought one last December and I am still halfway through the cartridges that were included. The full set costs about 100 euro (+/-60 for a knock-off) but they last for ages and never dry out. I threw 3-4 inkjet printers before that because printing heads were dried out and it was cheaper to buy new one than even try to repair. The laser is more expensive but what a comfort knowing it will just print whenever you need, even after few months of a break.
Load More Replies...The one at my work will detect if it's a "counterfeit" cartridge and stop working even if it's a real HP cartridge. Why is this level of datavelence necessary?
The printer companies make all their money on the ink. That's why the inkjet printers are dirt cheap and require an ink subscription.
Load More Replies...I bought one at the beggining of the pandemic because in France we needed to print an attestation to go outside to do grocery shopping or take a walk (1h max). Never use it again do to cartridge price. It would have been cheaper ro just by a new printer :(
I just printed off a single copy then filled in the details in pencil each time I went out, then erased it for the next time. Yes, I was checked (more than once) and they were quite happy with it like that.
Load More Replies...Laser Jet all the way, 1000's of pages for a pittance, no drying out and killing the printer, double sided prints, etc, etc.
I only use my printer once a year for documents that require printing. Which is not often these days.
Was thinking the same thing. On the rare chance I have to print something, it always makes me feel like it is 1988.

Airport food.
I travel a lot for work. I leave the house at least 2 1/2 hours prior to my flight just to get food before going to the airport. Usually, like a Subway footlong or something that fills me up for half the day. Also, bring your own water bottle.
Weird. Why don't you just make up a sandwich or two at home, before you leave?
When you're leaving for a week or longer, you don't want leftover ingredients getting spoiled in the fridge. I always empty my fridge before traveling. So that's why.
Load More Replies...$10 for a sandwich. $8 for a bottle of water. No thank you. I bring my own food and refillable water bottle from home.
I heard anything at airports is more expensive. I didn't realize how much more expensive. It's like buying food at a concert in a sports arena. I was shocked and horrified. Kinda makes it worth it to explore a little on a layover than stick around the airport.
Like sports arenas, food vendors at airports have to pay for the space they're using. So some percentage of the price you pay is going to the airport. And they charge the vendors whatever they want, because the vendors will just pass on that cost to the customer. So it isn't so much that the vendors are screwing you, it's the airport too. And they both count on a high percentage of passengers being able to simply expense the cost of meals. They don't care that it costs a family of four $100 for lunch, because where else are you going to go - they've GOT you!

US healthcare
Yes! Even with insurance, I have a bill for my child’s birth at around $30,000. My OB didn’t even pick up the phone when I went into labor. Nor did her backup. I had to get an emergency C-section, so I was charged accordingly.
My heath insurance is 54€ per mounth. Went to the ER last month, in an ambulance, spend the night there. Need surgery next week, I'll stay a week in the hospital. Total bill with the medication and a nurse visite at home a whole week : 0€. Not to mention the birth or my 3 kids, 0€ too.
No, your health insurance doesn’t cost you 54 euros a month. That’s only what you pay directly for the additional (most of the time private) health insurance. Most of the cost is paid through taxes / contributions deducted from your wages to fund the public universal health insurance. It’s immensely superior to the s****y us system but no need to lie on the actual cost..
Load More Replies...When I was pregnant, people asked me if I'd go back to America to give birth. I just laughed and said I'd rather buy a car and give birth here. This is why.
What! No way! Your insurance doesn't cover it? Ok, I've calmed down. 30.000 dollar? Did you get your own private suite or something? I had a c-section and then 3 days in hospital. Cost me, converted into dollars, 350 dollars. You guys really have to start a health-care insurance revolution: your system is killing people.
Remember when the political hacks said single payer would drive up the cost of health care? I believe they lied.
What even justifies the 30.000 USD? I had a c-section in Germany including having my tubes tied and my baby had to stay in the NICU for a week. I saw the bill from the hospital to my health insurance. It was around 4.000€, so approximately 4.300 USD. I just don't understand why there's nobody on the streets revolting against the "health care system" in the US - if you can even call it that
Let me make this perfectly clear, this is in no way a justification, just an explanation of what we get told. Start with the flat fee for the C-section and daily room fee. Then you get to pay for the use of the operating room. If any of the operating room staff aren't employed by the hospital, you get a separate bill for them (with the insurance often claim they are out of network so your out of pocket cost is more). Your nursing observation level changes throughout as do the cost (despite the fact you may have the same nurse when those levels change and that nurse getting the same pay throughout). Charged for each pill, bandaid, etc. Oh, and don't forget you get the same type of billing for your baby because technically they are their own patient and not included in your cost. Believe me, people are marching in the streets, just not the whole nation at once (pretty impossible given our size in both population and geographic). Plus the insurance business and lobbyists are more powerful

There is no way on this planet it cost the NHS £30,000 to provide that service. No way at all. The profiteering appalls me.
I'm sure the average American would pay an extra quarter in every dollar if it meant they didn't have this huge worry about falling ill. I am appalling system because even with insurance they're making an absolute mint. Where does this money go? Why do you have to pay when you have insurance? (Except the deductible) it's shocking!!
Women’s clothing 😩 including vintage and secondhand these days
You can thank the ppl who comb thru second hand/charity shops to sell online. Was in a charity shop a few weeks ago, just having a nosy, and saw a lot of Primark clothes, but not at Primark price. Why in hell would I buy old clothes that are double/triple the price when I can walk 10 meters down the street and actually buy new from Primark?
It's not resellers. It's the corporate greed mindset. The thrift stores are trying to become more like boutiques; while that might work in some areas, it absolutely does not work in other areas. All these corporate idiots coming up with these stupid ideas, it just shows that they 1: have never worked retail, & 2: have no clue what the people they are designed to serve want. It's all about increasing revenue year-over-year, and constant growth is unsustainable, but here they are buying into that mentality. You also have to consider that rent is going up, the employees don't work for free, electricity and water aren't free, and the waste disposal fees are through the roof bc people use thrift shops as their garbage disposal solution. Resellers aren't the problem, corporate greed is the problem.

yes. had a look at our local salvo and vinnies after the pandemic.. not cheap. $80+ for a shirt? gotta be jokin.
I may not be a fan of Wal-Mart but I buy most of my clothes and shoes from there or Target especially off the sales and clearance racks. It still cheaper then going to the thrift stores around where I live, which is sad as hell. There is a big shoe store that I hit up when the do sales or clearance because I can get stuff from them cheaper then buying used at goodwill it's f*****g ridiculous!
Yep. Not many places to buy where i live. I just bought a pair of shorys ans a tank top for $2 and $1 respectively. Walmart really marks down their end of season prices.
Load More Replies...Especially sizing...t's gotten to the point where I have to look at where an item is manufactured. But if you order online the same company, the same pair of pants in different colors might be manufactured in 3 different countries...and actually fit differently, some countries think we're HUGE and make their sizes (supposedly US sizes) A little big ....other countries must think we're tiny. Like maybe the Chinese people because they're petite ( I'm sorry, that's a stereotype, but it's kind of true, isn't it?) So they make their sizes too small.
Groceries are insane they go up every week a noticeable amount. I don't know how people on fixed incomes afford to eat.
Came here to say exactly that! I just got custody of my newborn grandson, straight out of the NICU, and was absolutely stunned, going to buy a few cans of formula, and saw they are now $35 PER CAN!!?!?!! When my kids were babies, I breastfed, primarily, but always had 1 can on hand,in case of an emergency (like if I was hospitalized, or something)and 1 can was $12!! (1990) I'm on SSI,due to my being disabled. I get less then $1,000 per month. Thank heavens there are programs like WIC who will help, after his enrollment appointment. Because that,on top of regular groceries, would be impossible!

F*****g 100%. Where I live, if I would’ve had a partner with a median salary, we could spend almost half as much per person on housing and get a nicer apartment! Combine that with everything costing less when you buy in bulk, and bachelor life starts to look not too appealing.
Getting married is wealth management and people don't get that. It's not only love. It's much more spendable money, less rent, tax deductions, etc
Who needs to get married to live with a partner and share costs? No one. The only additional advantage are the tax reductions.
Load More Replies...Exactly. That's why there's a new trend in the Netherlands to build roommate apartments.
I used to have a rule, "No new roommates" I didn't need any. That was 7 years ago. The last 5 yrs have resulted in the need for roommates. I currently have 4 roommates. We share my 5 bedroom house. Rent is $2100 month plus utilities run us around $500 in summer and last winter, $750 nearly $800 month plus groceries we all pitch in for food (I hit food banks)... together we are just barely scraping by
I find that living alone is much cheaper, for me, in my opinion. When it was me, my two kids, and husband together, it was always something that I had to come out of pocket for. Once everyone moved out, I downsized in everything. Instead of buying food for 4, I buy it for one, and the only thing I pay for monthly is rent and electric.
Having tried both...I found I'm still better off financially single. But that's me...I'm also very frugal (have to be these days).

My partner and I (42 years as a couple) parted two years ago. We decided to house share as friends (we had many happy memories). This has worked out really well. If one of us go on a holiday - we can afford to as all costs except food for the property are shared costs - the other is still in the home caring for it. This life is so much better than it would have been if we had tried to go solo in the housing/utilities market.
The only way I could afford moving out from my mom's house after college was to share a place with my brother. That was early 90s. Even worse nowadays. Now I'm back home because not only are my mom and I are raising my great-nieces together, neither one of us can afford living on our own.
Prescription drugs. At least here in the US. It’s disgusting what some companies charge. I know it takes years to develop medications, but when the cost of the medicine carves out entire subsets of society, that should tell you something. Here if you don’t have great insurance, you’re basically F’d.
My mum takes 12 different meds plus insulin every day. She would be dead if in USA, not only that she has had 6 major surgeries, including a bypass in the last 5 years. All for a government capped cost of $500 per calendar year for meds, zero costs on anything else, doctors, paramedics, home nurses, specialists, surgeons, all tests, all extensive hospital stays. She just spent 13 days in hospital again for fluid on lungs and low kidney function. They did every test you can think of and adjusted her meds until they got the balance right.
A lot of people here end up having to declare bankruptcy or refinance their home to pay for life saving treatments. There is SO much wrong with that!

The capsules didn't do anything special, no time release, not a different manufacturer just nothing different except it was a capsule (per the pharmasist). Ridiculous. Had them call the dr to note tablets for the prescription because no way was I paying that
I work in a retail pharmacy. Had a prescription come back as $103,000, without insurance. It was not a mistake. Obviously, the patient didn't get it. Had another for $14,000, with insurance. That customer DID get it. I was absolutely stunned by both situations.
One of my chemotherapy medications is $28,000 for a 28 day supply, even with insurance the co-pay was still $3,000 so I had to go through the drug manufacturer charity program that my doctor and hospital helped me apply for. That is only one medication and I would be dead if they hadn't accepted me into their program. I spend $450.00 a month on other medications if I take them as directed instead of trying to ration like I am now simply because I'm on disability, a very tight fixed income and it's either afford medications or food.
Insulin is ridiculous. I have migraines, and all medicines for migraines are through the roof. I also get Botox for mine. I could get Botox for cosmetic reasons and it would be half the price. In fact, the last time I checked, what I'm charged just for the medication (for one unit, say) is more than double the cost per unit cosmetically. I have to get 200 units. Most rescue meds like Ubrelvy and Nurtec are about $100 per pill. Per pill!
I do botox for migraines, and the injection sites for therapeutic Botox is different than cosmetic. Nowhere could ( or should) you get the 31 strategically placed injections into the proper muscles from a dermatologist or tech that can do Botox. The strength is 200 units/mL, and the recommended treatment is 155 units. There are tons of medications that are reasonably priced, the 2 you named are brand only, which will cost more than generics.

To be fair, anything for a minority group will cost more as the overheads (including special design, testing, legal compliance and insurance ) are shared between fewer purchasers.
Yuppers. And then there was this pandemic thing...yeah, a lot of disabled ppl really got the short straw.
COLLEGE and if you disagree I’ll give you a crumb of an example: my university was charging $50 extra per credit for online courses (even tho literally everything including hw, quizzes, exams were already virtual for every class through an app called canvas). One class I had to take for my major was strictly only available online and it happened to be 4 credits (50x4=200) so that was an extra $200 ~ on top of the original price ~ tacked on just because! <3
That's nothing. My university decided to build a new stadium. Nothing wrong with the old one. Did they use ticket sales of the previous stadium to pay for it? Nope. Charmed every student that started after 2004 an extra $1,000 until it was paid for. Would I have been able to use that stadium? Nope. Did I have an interest in sports? Nope. But I paid $4,000 towards that damn stadium!
It's not nothing -- that extra $200 was apparently a lot to OP.

Load More Replies...But at least all that debt guarantees a good job, right? Right? Oh...
For those outside the USA, tuition costs here have skyrocketed since the 1980s. The state-funded school I attended now charges over $15,000 per semester for tuition only. Room and board (dormitory and food service access) is an additional $10,000. Total yearly bill is just north of $31,000. Contrary to popular belief, it is generally NOT the sports programs that are making college so expensive. At least not solely. There are a lot of reasons it so expensive, but the primary one is that the universities know they can get it, because they work hand-in-glove with the student loan providers. Because the loans are "government guarantied" (they aren't really but that's a whole other thing) anyone, including an 18 year old with no credit or income, can get one. Because of sky-high interest rates, and artificially inflated tuition, it's not unusual for someone to be saddled with this debt for over 30 years.

Insurance
It's the most successful scam in the world! As has been explained to death on this site.
I live in Louisiana and have no tickets or accidents and liability insurance on my car which is a 2015 Dart is $250 a month. We have one of the highest insurance rates in the US and next year it will be going up to $275 a month. It's ridiculous for younger drivers my step sister just turned 20 and her insurance on an early 2000s Toyota 4Runner is in the $400s. Idk how they can charge so much for car insurance.
Omg! Seriously?! That's nuts! I live in south Florida (tons of elderly drivers, so you'd expect crazy premiums) and the insurance on my 2010 Lacrosse CXL has been $555 (for SIX months), exactly the same, since I bought it (just renewed for six more months... Everything else has gone up, but it's somehow the same!) - and it includes comprehensive collision, not just liability! That's crazy, I'm sorry to hear! Why's it so high in Louisiana? One of the lowest CoL states (no offense, just an observation)?

It’s messed up that the service you pay in case you need to use it, charges you additional costs if you actually use it. If I make a claim because my home gets damaged, next year my rate goes up. How’s that fair? The whole point of getting insurance is being able to use it if you need to. Otherwise, year after year, I’m paying you for nothing.
My father was a child of the depression. When his third kid came along and he got laid off, he figured the best economy proof business to work for would be the insurance industry. He was right.
Think about it. Insurance is costly because they're insuring things that are also costly.

It is a quality toy that lasts a very long time, but if you're just buying sets that kind of make up one thing, it's not worth it. The random pieces you can get creative with are worth it.
I think it is because a generation grew up playing Lego and falling in love with it. Now adults still in love with Lego, and with own money can pay more for a set. It is stunning how ridiculously expensive it is.
I inherited my Lego from my cousin, his nephew inherited mine, my nephew inherited his nephews, etc, etc.
I like building a Lego set once in a while, but they're way too expensive to buy for me. During my last vacation, I've rented the Space shuttle (200 euro) and the haunted house (300 euro) for 15 and 20 euro a week respectively, so that's a cheaper alternative if it's available in your area.
Food, rent, petrol.
Yeah.. Basically everything you need for staying alive :( It is crazy how I could buy clothes from some shetty ultra fast fasion compan cheaper than if I want to buy meat or veggies or simply food... :'(
Isn't it? Absolutely absurd prices. Ridiculously expensive to be alive. Seems like a parasite has latched on to the consumers sucking us dry!
Load More Replies...Parking at events. In June I saw Avenged Sevenfold at the Forum, and Blink 182 at the BMO Stadium. Both venues charge $60 for parking. $120 just to park my damn car. That's highway robbery. Literally.
Sports, too. Here in Boston, there are two gas stations across the street from Fenway Park. They shut down on game days and jam cars in them - for $100 a spot.
$100 a spot? SWINE!!! Just another reason to take public transit.
Load More Replies...It’s insane to think that parking spaces make more money than most people.
Wow. Here in Western Australia all major sporting events and major concerts include free public transport. The train station is right next to optus stadium there is literally no where to park you have to get the train or walk over the bridge from the cbd
That's criminal. I had to look up BMO Stadium to find out where this person was, and of course it's Los Angeles. The most I've ever been charged for parking was for a concert in Detroit, and that was $15. Here in Grand Rapids, you can usually find event parking for $10-12. If it's a big event for a huuuuuuge name, I can think of one place right next to the arena that might try to charge $20, but that's about it. $60 is unthinkable.
Yes!!!! Hollywood bowl was 140 for an off lot! Last time I went it was 50. We didnt know we had to purchase in advanced because it was never digital before so in person was that insane price and had to rush to download the app as they wouldn't take cash or card. Had to pay booking fees through the app. We would have missed most of the show as it would have taken us an hour just to turn around on the roads.... traffic was terrible. We left two hours in advance and most of the time was dealing with the traffic just trying to pull in. Didn't want to risk it and face traffic again.. so are the cost but now we know it's worth it to walk the two hours to the show instead of drive.
Ordinary parking at the last Super Bowl football championship game in Phoenix cost $400.
Be thankful you are able TO attend the event. Many can't even afford basic to sustain life things like food, housing, power etc...
GoodWill
Goodwill got bought out and most locations are no longer non-profit. They higher people to go through donations, sell the decent stuff online and the c**p at the store. It was a very noticeable change at my hometown GW
Goodwill Shmoodwill - shop at a "mom and pop" type thrift store that supports a local charity. Win-win.
Load More Replies...Goodwill leave ye broke... same as charity shops in Ireland and when im donating clothes i will put them online for free
I remember getting a load of loft insulation from a government scheme (it was £100 or something) I massively overestimated so stuck the remaining 10 rolls on Freecycle. The guy turned up in a Nissan Micra. Had to do 5 trips to get them home.
Load More Replies...Buy Nothing Groups need to spread the word to neighbors. Instead of donating it to a For-Profit business like Goodwill, people should first try a Buy Nothing group.
Did you know that once hired on, the starting pay is what an employee gets paid no matter how long that employee works for Goodwill. Meaning - NO PAY RAISE- ever! If your hired on at $12.00 hourly that's what you will be paid even if you're still working for Goodwill 10 years from now, $12.00 hourly. While new hires will be getting hired on at a higher pay rate doing the exact same work as you. Goodwill doesn't even allow overtime nor does it offer employees any kind of benefits. Oh wait, there is one, full time employees get 1 week paid vacation once a year (2 weeks if your really high up) at one third your normal pay rate for 40 hours. Meaning, if you're normal pay is $12 hour then your paid vacation will only be $4 hour × 40 hours.
You can find brand new clothes at Goodwill and pay only $10. I know because my friend gets a lot of stuff from there.
Yeti makes a completely average cast iron 12” Skillet. Average price for a very nice one $25-$35. Yeti price $400
Having worked for multiple retailers that sold Yeti, I can almost guarantee that Yeti did not make the skillet. Someone else made it and Yeti had their name stamped on it.
I had to Google it and Yeti does sell a $400 cast iron. They teamed up with Butter Pat Industries out of MD to make the 12" skillet.
Load More Replies...I have a couple skillets and a dutch oven from great grandmother. Still work perfect. I get sad sometimes seeing if for sale at a flea market. I still buy it though, so it has a good home.
Load More Replies...Yeah, and Gucci sells handbags for $400 that are no better than those you can buy for $20. My Lodge cast iron pan cost $30 a decade ago. Looks new.
Lodge is the best. Reasonably priced. I bought a cast iron set from Macys abd its cheap iron and had pits and stuff. Replaced it with a Lodge.
Load More Replies...A Lodge skillet is about that much, and probably better. The thing about a cast iron skillet, though, is that they last FOREVER if properly maintained. My own is only about 20 years old, but I know people who use cast iron cookware that was handed down through their family for generations.
A lot if medication. The asthma medication my doctor tried to prescribe when I had a weird dormant asthma flare-up would've been $700 a month with insurance
Wish I could post you some of mine from Australia, where scripts like these are covered under PBS (Pharmaceutical benefot scheme) and run $AU20 tops. Maybe some of us can team up and help each other world wide. Not a gloat and maybe not plausible, but worth a try. Sorry you must pay this to breathe 😔
Ventolin is like $8 here. So cheap. I'd be dead if I lived in America
Load More Replies...In the UK, adults (children and pensioners free) pay for prescriptions - £9.65p per item. However, the government allows you to buy a 'pre-pay' certificate - £111.60p and then all your prescriptions are free for a year - ALL. Anyone with chronic illness who doesn't already get free medication, can pay this and get everything free even if they need 10 items a month.
Maximum you'd pay for most medication here is USD$ 232 per year (2024), if on a prescriptions. Some are completely free today, thou they are talking about not making insulin free but that you'll pay a maximum of 232 also for that as for most of things..
My inhaler is $400. No insurance will cover it and there is no generic, but it works so I don't want to change. I just use it less than I'm supposed to.
That is horrible. It should be free (or at least affordable) to breath. As a Dutchie who pays €130,- a month and about €400,- a year on healthcare, I really do not understand why not every citizen in the USA is standing up to this. Demonstrate, strike and VOTE for basic human rights! There is strenght in numbers!!
Load More Replies...I mean as a diabetic the demand for my injections made it months before i could get refills. Problem was it wasn't being prescribed to diabetics, just people who wanted to lose 20lbs because they couldn't go for a walk. Also shame on the doctors for prescribing it for non-essential patients.
Unless you score some crazy deal - most airline travel. Expensive as hell and the quality is garbage.
Yeah, as I get older if I get on a long flight. I'm going to HAVE to upgrade. Because I cannot stand the economy seats for any length of time anymore.
What does it cost to drive? My average round trip SFO to SYD is around 1500 for 16000 miles. I can't drive 16K miles for 1500. Another example, Sac to Charleston, 520 round trip for 2800 miles each way. Can't do the drive for that.
From major hubs its cheap. It doesnt cost much more to fky from portland oregon to washington. Dc as from Boise, idaho to portland oregon. Which shows the common theme of this thread. Prices are no longer tied to cost of goods. Its what the market will bear.

Taco Bell has really gone up. I swear my old order used to run around $10, now it’s $20.
Oh, those cheap tacos after a night out while in college were fabulous.
Taco Bell here, quality down, price double. We switched to another place.
I bought Taco Bell about six months ago. A taco and a drink ( okay frozen drink ) was over $5. Never again.

Used to be able to get ANY size soda for $1, not anymore! Now a CHILD SIZE SMALL, is dang near $3!!
I was travelling. I reakky tried to fibd a reteraunt, a diner, even a truck stop. All fast food on the interstate. Okay, mcd it is. Oh, they have the halloween buckets with the happy meal. $6 ? Nope. Okay, i will do the buy one get one for $1. $4.50. okay, maybe some fries ? $3 for the " value " fries ? Ugh.

Load More Replies...Cars.
It's the main reason why I still drive my 21-year-old car. It gets me where I need to go and no fancy computer extras that I couldn't care less about. 🚗
Cars do last longer, eh. When I was a kid… if a car made it to 100k miles and 8 years, it was rusted out trash. Anything older than 10yo was listed as “classic” in the newspaper. Now cars last easily twice as long and get double the fuel economy. The tray is to buy new every 2-3 years. Either buy used or buy new and keep the car for a decade.

That works in a very small town or a larger town/city that has good public transportation (which is pretty rare) in America. Mostly it doesn't work because things are just way too far to walk. You must live in a place that has things very conveniently located! Also, I'm sure your body appreciates the exercise while you can get it. :)

There’s nothing you can’t learn online for free or a fraction of regular uni. So it has zero to do with ‘skills’, especially when most degrees confer almost no ‘skills’ anyway

For awhile, eggs were. Like, christ. A simple 12 count of large eggs used to run for $5 when they were $1.20
Yes that's exactly what it was that caused the price to go up.
Load More Replies...A dozen "decent" eggs is about £4 in the UK, you can get the ones where the chickens are tortured for less though.
They have become more expensive. On the one hand. On the other hand: from 3-4 eggs you get full, and for that it is still a cheap thing. In Germany, I pay 50 eurocents for a bruderhuhn egg. (I.e., the male chicks are not shredded, but also raised).
I'm confused, what is bruderhuhn egg? Genuine question.
Load More Replies...Because there is an Avian flu epidemic in North America that is obliterating the wild and domestic bird population...and it has jumped to other species.
Eggs are a rare case where the prices actually returned to previous levels after the shortage was over. Most products, once the price goes up, it doesn't come back down all the way.
Living a decent life.
FIRST!!! Ok, so, ANY "life", decent, average, or fixed income, makes no difference. It's ALL exspensive!
Cup of Coffee
I remember when it was rare to see someone walking down the street carrying a cup of coffee. It was not that many decades ago. You've all been sucked into a daily (or multiple times a day) addiction previous generations survived without. And all those disposable cups make me want to cry.
I recall when it started to become trendy among yuppies back in the late '80s and it was more like a badge saying "I'm so busy (and successful) that I don't have time to sit down and drink my coffee".
Load More Replies...My bean to cup machine is still one of my best purchases. £300 about 9 years ago, more than recovered it's cost.
The coffee I make at home is delicious, brewed exactly the way I like it, and is a fraction of the cost.
My wife and i each drink two cups every morning. Set the auto drip up the night before to come on before we wake up. Probably spend $1/day for organic beans (Costco). Other than water, the cheapest thing we drink by a wide margin.
Load More Replies...i noticed takeaway coffee has gone up like mad (Im talking average cup o joe here, no sugary instagram drinks) ALWAYS bring my own flask with me when im out the door.
There are, in fact, some pretty good instant coffees around. When out all day on jobs, I'll take a thermos of boiling water, coffee and sugar and make my own 2 - 3 cups
Bouche likes coffee. Audi hasn't stolen any yet (that I know of).
So wait... are we talking about a real cup of coffee or supercharged sugar water? Cause you can get really good coffee somewhat cheap if you don't mind brewing it yourself but if you're taking about the pancreas aborting sugar water that IS sugar water, that's on you.
That's why I make my own and use my travel mug. $2 minimum for a cup every day really adds up; the money I save goes towards the good coffee and lasts for quite a while
graphics cards
Blame the crypto miners. They wrecked the GPU market for the last decade. Makes me want to punch a crypto-bro in the face. If I knew one at least.
Hey, no worries they already punched themselves in the face as their currency usually fails within a month. I'm still convinced that nvidia made some cards for "scalpers" to sell them at an outrageous profit and took a cut. Keep the production low enough and you create an artificial demand.
Load More Replies...To be fair, it doesn't take the best card to run modern games - a GTX 1050ti is more than enough and is rather cheap. CPUs are more important anyways, despite common believe it's not necessarily a lacking graphic processor that leads to lagging
Mostly right if you don't mind not being able to play me games as they are released. Cities skylines Ii for instance just came out and will be largely unplayable on less than a 2070 equivalent card.
Load More Replies...If only I used something better than a 2013 Mac air for Minecraft I’d know what that was XD
My husband was looking at upgrading his graphics card a few years ago. He ended up buying an entire computer with the graphics card he wanted for $200 LESS than the card by itself would have cost.
It was really bad, but it's not anymore. The best cards In 2014 (gtx 980) during my last build were $600-700. Now, almost ten years later, the best RTX cards can be found around $1k again, when inferior cards were going for $3-5k if you could find them. GPU mining has been dead for awhile, and supply chains are getting back their footings (Prices in USD)
I have an obscure one: sliding screen doors for sliding glass doors. No one wants to ship them assembled, but the kits are not DIY friendly. The big box stores have eliminated selection to a couple of one-size-fits-all-but-never-fits-properly. So you can either up your DIY skills, or you can buy a custom fit screen door for, oh... about $400 minimum. Never would have imagined sliding screen doors would become an entitlement of the rich, but here we are.
I had my a/c replaced recently, and the welder doing the air handler cut the line to my icemaker, caused some flooding and fried my tankless water-heater (I paid cash for a "side-job" - so of course he never answered my calls). Got estimates, $1300-2500. Found out my neighbor was a plumber, $155 online for new water heater, beer and pizza for labor + a new friend!

Going on vacation single or in any way, went really expensive! I used to pay less 5 years ago when I was going with my daughter to nice All inclusive hotels at the beach, with pools and all, then now, as single person, for half board cheap hotel outside of town and 1km from the town beach and town. How is that more expensive than when there were two of us in luxury hotel?
