Many artists discuss difficult themes through their works, making their viewers think and look at problems from different angles.

Stephan Schmitz is a conceptual illustrator Zürich, Switzerland. Stephan uses colors, shapes, optical illusions and sometimes even visual puns to tell complex stories in single images. Most of his images have a surreal feel to them, showing what could hide behind the reality.

Take a look at some of his works below.

Failure is the ladder to success, but one should clean up the mess, or you can slip and break your neck!

this failure/success thing is over hyped. while you can't have success without failure, having failure doesn't imply you'll ever succeed if you just keep failing over and over...

People only see the success, and not the hard work to get it and which implies failures.

Failure is the only way to succeed, and the more you succeed the less you will fail. This is true in all aspects, art, photography, writing, science. No matter the discipline, the more you fail, the more you will learn, the more you learn, the higher you will go if you keep working at it. No one started out knowing everything. No one.

This is a nice depiction of the reality of success in life. Rarely you'll get it right for the first time. Usually you'll have to try and try again till the time you learn that skill and then Master it

The weird part of social networks is that something that's meant to unite people by letting them share their lives with millions other people all over the globe is kind of (often) turning into a show where people spend more time posing for pics to show off their "fun life" than they spend time actually living that fun life. Same goes for being social. The irony of the situation portrayed is it's actually kinda likely some or even most of those happily hanging out people are generally feeling lonely themselves and that's exactly why they're posting pics like that - to at least *look* like they're not lonely, because they're like "damn everyone is posting pics of hanging out with friends, I need to post one too so I don't stand out and appear weird/lonely/whatever"

I get it social media can be bad bullying, people hating their own lives thinking everyone elses is amazing etc. however it going to be a big part of our future and when used well it means u can show all your friends at once really easily what you are doing if you're in another country and make friends u can both follow eachother etc.

What you have to remember is that everyone has bad days, but no one posts THAT online. Everyone looks like they have a great life because they post all the good stuff. That's why if you're having a bad day, DO NOT go online because 9/10 you will feel a lot worse afterwards

I'm lucky to have a fantastic father. When my parents divorced my mum wasn't capable of bringing me up on her own, so my parents had two choices: my dad become sole carer or that I go into care. He gave up his job to become a full time father and after 15 years is still here for me. My nieces' dad on the other hand is a complete moron and does nothing for them

As a Marine, this one makes me the most upset. Not that the image was made, but that the reality of the situation has been ignored for so long by those in command. There are not a lot of situations that make me want to hurt people, but one where someone takes advantage of another, and gets away with it because the higher ups don't want to "make waves" is one of those that do. This is actually infuriating me as I write this.....

Corporations, media and the governments brainwash our everyday lives all the time. Corporations depict the demographics and lifestyles of how they view their customers they want using their products, but often it's very exaggerated and stereotypical societal behaviour and ideals that people think should now be a normalcy. The government, too. No need to follow the tin foiled hat crowd to see that the government controls everything in our daily lives. Sure we have freedoms. But at a cost and what they allow as permissible. Just look at all the stupid laws and requirements being put in place. And if you're not okay with what the government says you're deemed unpatriotic. And in the States you could even get accused of being a terrorist or too anti-American to be considered an acceptable citizen.

Someone who's settled with someone safe despite still holding onto feelings for someone from the past, mourning a past partner who has passed away, wishing things were different, seeing two sides of a relationship, two sides of her, two sides of her partner, this could have so many meanings. Really cool.

Why can't we all accept different opinions? My parents are religious I am strongly unreligious and so are my grandparents. My friend is very religious, homophobic (I'm bisexual) a Trump supporter, I seriously disagree with this, but my friend taught me that doesn't matter so much about opinions it is about whether you thrust them on people, let them affect how you treat people that is when they are wrong. Of course, there is a limit I am still uncertain about the homophobic but limits like racism and sexism.

I think humans struggle to accept other people's opinions simply because they conflict with their own. We all think our beliefs are true (I mean you can't believe in something if you don't think it's true) and when someone shares their belief that conflicts your belief it's kinda like that person saying "what you believe is not true." which leads to conflict. A lot of people are not willing not be open-minded to other people's beliefs/opinions because they don't want their belief to be untrue.

I know this feeling. Some selfish and narcissist parents look at their children like if they were their extensions and don't accept them to have different opinions and desires. Create your own space if you can and be proud to use your own head despite the lack of support.

There's never a wrong person. Some couples are not meant to last, but only last until it's time for the forever person to come into your life. But you won't know it until you meet the person and find they treat in ways you've never knew anyone ever would.

Its the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. It was painted by Michelangelo. And I think you are right. If the painter is not very religious, maybe he wants to tell us, that "God" is an Alien. I would like that, anyway. :D

There was actually a Greek myth about this, though slightly different. A sculpture wanted a woman that was perfect for him, and disliked all the women he knew, so he sculpted his ideal woman, with the wish she would come alive. The goddess of love, Aphrodite, granted his wish.

Being annoyed at a sound is not misophonia. Hearing something that makes you fly into anxiety, rage, anger, fear, makes you want to escape....that's misophonia. For me, it's people cracking their knuckles. When I hear people do it in the store, I quickly walk to the other side of the store away from them. I'm currently a college student and it seems the younger crowd does this constantly. I've had to ask students to give me a heads up before they crack their knuckles so I can cover my ears.

I have misophonia and it's very difficult everyday. I just can't stand to a lot of sounds and some just give me murderer impulsions, like I could slap someone. I'm also stressed and annoyed when doors are slamed, when trucks make a loud sound, or even when someone breath too close to me so I can hear it.

Ok. So not allergic. It’s like when I hear a specific sound (eating, sniffling, swallowing, breathing, noses whistling, clicks, taps, and much more) it makes me want to explode. My body just like fills with a horrible feeling and I want to scream, destroy things, and murder people. Also, for me it’s not just noises, it’s the anticipation of the noises. And, certain visual things like leg bouncing and people moving their jaws. Honestly writing this, I feel like I make it seem like a smaller deal than it is. It makes life pretty hard.

I'm halfway through my master's degree, and I swear I feel like I don't know a damned thing. There should be a mix of theory and practice. Sometimes it's good to know which buttons to push as well as why you're pushing them.

Depends on the university. My school was super hands on - our "sister" school was 99% theory. Their lab classes were mostly online. I don't think those kids would know what to do in a real lab. There are places in the world for both sides of the coin I suppose.

I agree with you. Also, similar situation. I was the lucky one in the fun university, where studying was a pleasure, but, oh, the horror stories of my friends from different universities.... Also depends on your major, I think. Humanities mostly seem more... human! But maybe that's just me and my affinities.

Agree that theory is taught, but when theory is brought to bare, the results don't always jive with theory. Then they often ignore the results and teach more of it.

There is an old axoim, those who cannot do, teach. While this is obviously not always the case, often those in academia lose sight of what is truly needed in the workplace and focus solely on esoteric ideas and concepts not rooted in reality.

Ooo this one's cool. There is a certain charm in decaying places though. They are sad, yes, but it's always like they hold some sort of mystery and even if you know most everything about them you just can't help wondering - who lived there, what did they do, like, hate? What memories do these crumbling walls keep? With a non-abandoned place, even if it's old but renovated and all, you just don't get that vibe somehow.

That's like a restaurant here that has handicapped parking out front, but then has a fricken bike rack blocking the ability for people in wheelchairs to get out of vans via a ramp. Then to top it off, the only access to the walkway in front of the restaurant is in the back of the building meaning anyone who is in a wheelchair has to go all the way through a busy parking lot, get up on the sidewalk and travel all the way down the side of the building to the front to get in, fighting every overgrown bush to get in. I've stopped giving them my business when I realized what my neighbors husband would have to go through to eat there. To top it off, they say they value and support military...seriously? Then why isn't their wheelchair access.

I've met so many people like that, not just in relationships. They always make a big deal about it, loudly declaring that they'll help you out anytime; just call them and they'll be right there. Until you actually make that call, of course. Then they seem to disappear off the face of the earth. I've learned that the ONLY person I can consistently rely on to help me is ME.

The thing is it's supposed to be a temporary aide to help those that need it. But navigating your way out is a maze as your not told where to go, what resources are available or even allowed to save money without getting docked. You're kept trapped and in the dark. It's up to the recipients to find their way and look for programs. And even when they do find it, it's not guaranteed they'll be accepted. It's the government way to keep these people in poverty. It gives the tax payers something to complain about. A distraction. A diversion to how much money the government is really gauging taxpayers in reality for things like expensive dinners, events and trips. Does anyone know or complain how much money it costs national leaders to meet in person around the world when all they could've done was hold a conference video call?

For this particular picture, I see it as a little girl trying to create some happiness in a joyless place. Someone was murdered right outside her back door. That combined with the broken fridge and garbage in the backyard says to me that she lives in a bad/dangerous neighborhood. The little girl is trying to scrape some positivity out of a scary, sad situation.

It warms my heart that someone cares enough to address this disease. I have it and it is literally destroying my quality of life. I have no friends, because people absolutely do not understand how physically, mentally and emotionally crippling Graves Disease is. Thank you for this. It lets me feel like someone cares about my suffering. Thank you so very much.

At the moment I'm listening to older rock music so I don't really have that problem but I've been listening to it for so long that I no longer get into any hip hop or pop very easily because it doesn't have the drummers or the bassists.

For each person I've met with Graves Disease, they each seem to have their own story of how the disease affected them. Mine goes in remission for long periods of time, only reactivating during times of extreme stress. I had none of the eye problems, but developed some strange skin issues. My biggest hurdle has been trying to get doctors to stop dismissing my every complaint as 'Oh, that must be the Graves.' and also, people close to me dismissing my emotions as 'Oh, that must just be the Graves'. I never let them burn out my thyroid.

I can emphasize. I have fibromyalgia and I fear that someday, a serious health problem will be dismissed as "just another fibro symptom". New and strange symptoms pop up from time to time and sometimes it's very hard to tell what's fibro and what's not.

I'll tell you, I got Graves in 2002, and my experience certainly is not one of coming unraveled or floating away on the wind. I've been in remission for some time now, but for me the worst part were my proptotic eyes. I had to use eye drops every twenty minutes, and sleep with a mask to hold my eyes shut. My heart would race from time to time. I was grumpy, and gained weight from the medicine, but that's it. There's a tv talk show woman (can't remember her name) who's acting like it's utterly debilitating. I never missed a day's work--just looked like Marty Feldman.

Everybody is not you. She might not be "acting" like it's utterly debilitating. It might actually be utterly debilitating to her. You've gone through this, so it seems like you should have a little empathy. Instead, you sound so judgmental and dismissive of what another person is going through.

We need to push for more unions. It's long past time for workers to unite and use our powerful aggregate voice to finally swing the pendulum away from management and back to the workers where it belongs. I've worked union jobs and, believe me, I never felt more secure at work. I'm not one to misuse privileges, and it felt good to be recognized as such, rather than treated like an expendable idiot child.

Don't let him go to college. Help him learn a valuable trade and he'll be fine. If he does go to college, make sure he majors in something that is a real job like engineering or programming. He'll be fine if he just uses common sense and develops work ethic.

For most women, they do eventually either go away or happen less and less. What killed me was the aftermath. Menopause epigenetically triggered hypothyroidism, gluten sensitivity, and an immune disorder in me. I was actually much healthier when I was having miserable monthly periods. Yep, boys, it ain't easy being female---you need to recognize and acknowledge that.

Electric cars can not be the answer to pollution, but not why most people think. Thing is, there are a lot of problems with cars beside the petrol/diesel that electricity doesnt solve. Whats needed in the end is a totally different behaviour.
