At 06:00 Moscow time (03:00 GMT) yesterday, Europe entered its darkest hours since WWII. Putin announced a “military operation” in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. Immediately, unprecedented armed violence on innocent people of Ukraine followed.

In the coming hours, repeated explosions were heard in Mariupol, Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Kherson, and Nikolaev, as it became clear the whole country was under attack. Videos of the capital Kyiv blasted by cruise or ballistic missiles emerged, with roads getting completely clogged with cars as residents desperately tried to escape. In a bid to hide from airstrikes, people packed their bags, bundled up against the cold, and took shelter in underground subway stations. As the world closed its eyes for the night’s rest, here in shelters, men and women, elders and children didn’t dare to fall asleep.

Putin’s war already took the lives of 137 innocent civilians and military personnel on the first day of Russia’s invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Today, Friday the 25th, the fatalities are likely to increase as the country waits for what Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to the country's interior minister, called the war's 'hardest day,' warning of potential tank assault on Kyiv.

Below are the raw and heartbreaking moments of the violent war happening in Ukraine right now. The war that many felt was impossible in the advanced century we live in today. So today the world stands strong with Ukraine.

Follow the live updates of the situation in Ukraine at the official page of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"The breathtaking bravery of Russian citizens who know they’ll be arrested, and worse, for protesting the war and do it anyway"

It's really heartening to see how many Russians are willing to invite the wrath of the authorities by protesting, knowing that it could result in their not only being imprisoned, but worse.

Yes, i was wondering if the majority would agree to protest (e.g. soldiers refusing to bomb etc), couldn't it help? I mean, i know it's illegal, but they cannot send hundreds of thousand people to prison. How can one person decide in behalf of two nations, made up of millions of people, that they will go to war? There should be a way for the people to have a saying in their own fate. (I know, it's not that simple, just thinking..)

Russian people do not support this war!!! It is a horrible crime that we don't know how to stop but will end up paying for! We have families and friends in Ukraine, we are worried and them and about ourselves. This is goddamned nightmare

To the all Russian citizens who never wanted and oppose this horrible war and gross violations of human rights, I am so sorry for what is happening. I know that many of you have family and friends in Ukraine as well and are scared for your loved ones. It is terrifying that the Russian people who oppose this war have to risk being arrested or worse for protesting. Thank you for your courage. Please stay safe.

I already said this in another post but anyway. I’m from Finland and we know what it’s like to have a border with that soulless robot who claims he is leading Russia. I know people from Russia and Belarus. I know there are lots of you in both countries who do NOT support this and I’m sorry we have become enemies because of this s**t Putin is playing.

We reached out to a native Ukrainian Yev Kanivets, a professional mobile engineer who has witnessed Russia's invasion firsthand. He shared his first-hand account with Bored Panda on what happened the past two days.

Yev was living in Kharkiv, which is one of the major cities attacked by Putin. “I woke up at 5 a.m. from the explosions in MY CITY. I was prepared and lucky enough to evacuate in one hour. There were traffic jams around the city, so we spent almost 2 hours going far enough,” Yev wrote in a heartbreaking post on Linkedin.

“I was lucky to evacuate. My wife and I were driving our car the whole day, 14 hours, like crazy to get as far as we could from the danger. We are exhausted, stressed, and worried about mothers who remained in the Kharkiv region.”

When Yev arrived at Kropivnitskiy, he and his family already had a room booked to stay at night. “The hostess was very nice to us,” he said.

This whole situation is so crazy and still people in my country, think that we are somehow different. We aren't. If this a**hole wants to invade our country, he will try. “We didn't eat anything the whole day because of stress and couldn't sleep enough. There were Ukrainian jet-fighters flying over us the whole night, so no bombs were dropped. But we couldn't sleep anyway. We worried a lot about our friends that stayed in Kharkiv, which was bombarded and attacked by tanks,” Yev recounted.

The next morning Yev said they woke up tired, still stressed. “But, obviously, it's much better to wake up because of the sun, not explosions. In this part of Ukraine, there were no fights, no Russian troops, it was much easier to get the fuel,” he said. So they fueled the car and departed to the small city near Uman. “Hot dogs and coffee at the fuel station were our breakfast in the new world,” he said.

I am so surprised at how many "in the know" smart people I see interviewed on TV "I never thought Putin would do this". You have to be kidding me. The minute he said that the fall of the Soviet Union was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century, that should have been what's known as a clue. I thought to myself, he's going to try to put it back together. All the military put in place surrounding the Ukraine. "Do you think he's REALLY going to invade Ukraine?". Well he's not going to bring it all back to Russia. That would look genuinely weak. What part of pincer, blitzkrieg set up don't you see? "He seems to be just sitting there. When do you think he would invade, if he did?" . HES WAITING UNTIL AFTER THE OLYMPICS ARE OVER! This monster reads like a book. No. He's not going to stop at Ukraine. He's going to try to get it all back. Get ready for that NATO. He's rationally irrational. This post says everything. Glory to, and long live Ukraine!

Putin still thinks of him as a "comedian". Surprising who is a REAL leader when it's all on the line. This is a dangerous move for him, but this is what's known as leadership and loving the people of the country you lead. Putin obviously doesn't know what that is, even when it's punching him in the face.

While driving, Yev and his family visited many small cities. “There was no single person in panic. Everybody stayed calm, friendly, and ready for anything. No problems with goods or resources.”

Because they planned their trip at night and in a hurry, there was a mistake with the booking date. “So when we arrived at Tulchin and asked for our booking we discovered it was for tomorrow. Hence we didn't have a place to spend a night in,” he said.

Yev said that it was the first time we called hotels by phone in our whole lives since he said, “we’re Booking and Airbnb generation.” “We called about a dozen hotels, and all places were taken. Then we tried to increase the area and, finally, found a small room 40 minutes from us. At this point, we were totally exhausted again,” he told us. Yev said that finally, they’re going to sleep well.

The Kremlin propaganda is very efficient, unfortunately: Russian army "is defending its borders" "civilians in Ukraine are not affected" "Ukraine needs to be de-nazified". Meanwhile, a WWII veteran said that Putin is, in fact, the only "nazi".

Exactly. He is hitler personified. Please remember what former president of the United States was a big supporter of putin and vice versa. Not fake news!

no need to be sorry for being Russian. It is not your fault. You don't belong to a worse race. In fact you can (which you seem to do!) be a shining example of all this.

Any Russians out there who don't support Putin, you don't need to worry too much. A lot of us understand and aren't going to hold it against you. Yes, some will, but there are still a lot of people who won't.

Nice sentiment, but never apologize or feel guilty for anything you had nothing to do with. Sharing a demographic with those who do evil doesn't mean you're responsible for their actions, past or present.

Because you don't see all the videos and photos of their violence. You never talk to survivors. I do. And i believe them more, then these articles. Ukrainian Bandera fans started with prohibition of Russian language and pogroms, then they shooting at peaceful people of those brave cities, who didn't want to become nazis, and now they lynch those soldiers who refuse to fight. Your news refuse to public those reports. And your governments stay silent when those evidences are shown to them.

“I (and other 40 million Ukrainians) are fully aligned with what official Ukraine's Twitter account says about the situation. The only thing I'd added from my personal experience is that I've never seen Ukraine this united–the Russian invasion was like a catalyst,” Yev said.

Yev urges foreigners to follow the official trustworthy accounts of the Ukrainian government, like this one. “Spread what you see there, so everybody knows what's happening,” he said.

Another way to help is to peacefully press your government to help Ukraine and sanction Russia, says Yev. Donations are very needed as well, so if you want to help Ukraine and support the future of democracy, scroll down below for the list of charities.

In my country (Greece) the Russian embassy had the audacity to tell us with an official message to the social media, to get over ourselves and not believe everything we hear! We lost 10 Greeks yesterday that were living in Ukraine and my country protested! This is an extreme reaction from an embassy INSIDE a foreign country and I'm shocked we haven't kicked them out yet

President Joe Biden yesterday released a statement condemning Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and called the attack “unprovoked and unjustified.” Biden stated that “Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way.” He assured that “the world will hold Russia accountable.”

On Thursday, Biden unveiled a list of sanctions on Russia to punish the country for its full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. The new sanctions include export blocks on technology, a centerpiece of Biden's approach to limit Russia's advancement of its military and aerospace sector as much as possible. In addition, sanctions were applied on Russian banks and "corrupt billionaires," as well as their families who are close to the Kremlin.

However, there was disappointment that the round of sanctions unveiled by the US and Europe did not remove Russia from the SWIFT financial messaging system. Here is the list of global sanctions applied on Russia for the war in Ukraine.

Calling you to fight to the death against a foreign occupation? Have we ever used a dictionary and looked up "tyranny?" If you find masks "cruel" then dang your life has been beautifully privileged.

As news of the invasion and its consequences for the Ukrainian people is spreading around the world, making people observe the country in a tragedy unprecedented for the advanced century we live in, you may feel the desire to help. Below are some ways you can help.

Charities that help the war effort

Save Life: This NGO crowdfunds non-lethal military equipment, such as thermal vision scopes, & supplies it to the Donbas front lines. It also provides training for Ukrainian soldiers, as well as researching troops’ needs and social reintegration of veterans.

Donbas SOS: This organization helps those who live in the Donbas war zone, those who relocated to other parts of Ukraine, and freed prisoners of war. It offers legal support, accommodation assistance, and psychological aid among other things.

Crimea SOS: This organization has been helping internally displaced people from Crimea since Russia occupied the peninsula in 2014. It documents Russian authorities' repressions against Crimeans and advocates for the end of the occupation.

Hospitallers : This is a medical battalion that unites volunteer paramedics and doctors to save the lives of soldiers on the frontline. They crowdfund their vehicle repairs, fuel, and medical equipment.

He will be harsh and horrible to all those Russians trying to protest this war as he has no humanity, no compassion or soul. I pray for those standing against him in Russia that their voices will be heard and it will resonate with enough people that he can't stop them all. He is a dictator who only thinks of himself and his cronies. The worst type of human, the sort that start wars and create heartache while immune from any real damage themselves. Coward,

Germany made deals with Russia on NorthStream which made a lot of money for both sides and complicated the energetic situation in Europe. Also they were very reluctant towards any anti-Russian stance (supported by Poland, Ukraine or Baltic nations). Current situation in in big part the result of their sitting on fence.

I have lived through genocide and aggresion against my homeland as a kid (Bosnian here). It is so sad and frustrating to see the world once again reducing its support for the free world to light shows and meaningless sanctions. Ukraine lost the war long before it started due to hearrless bureaucratic governments of the ‘democratic world’. Had Ukraine been supported honestly and fully, with NATO at its borders (just like my homeland back then), Putin would never had attacked. Unfortunately, the bastards are much more decisive and efficient than the “free world”. We have defended our country. I still believe that Putin can’t take the soul out of the land and Ukraine will be Ukraine, regardless of the soldiers on its land.

As much as I hate the situation that is happening right now and support Ukrainians in their fight for freedom and independence, this one is a total b******t. Ukraine's current territory was a part of many empires in the past, including Polish-Lithuanian and Ottoman amongst them, and has become internationally accepted as the Republic of Ukraine at the beginning of the twentieth century. Please do not use false information to deceive and manipulate people, the information on the history of all these architectural monuments is available on the net, and the Ukraine did not even exist as a country then.

All of you who keep saying 'Republicans' or 'Conservatives' are supporting the Russian invasion are too dense to realize that you are being played by Russian trolls. Not a SINGLE person I know isn't rooting for Ukraine and I resent you badmouthing your political opponents to score a few points and refuse to let go of the hate in your heart because 'Orange man Bad' Putin is a KGB lunatic and you are playing right into his hands just like the last two US elections.

    Heartbroking-Moments-Ukraine-Russia-War

"Ukrainian army official Facebook account shares how this soldier sacrificed his life to stop the russians from entering the capital by blowing up a bridge:

THE HEROES OF THE MOMENTUM. Pidled the city together with myself #stoprussia On this difficult day for our country, when the Ukrainian people give away to the Russian occupiers in all directions, one of the hardest places on the map of Ukraine was the Crimean intersection, where one of the first enemies met a separate marine battalion. In order to stop the promotion of the tank column, a decision was made to overthrow the Geniche Car Bridge. The engineer of a separate battalion sailor Skakun Vitaliy Volodymyrovich was called to perform this task. The bridge was replaced, but he didn't have time to get out of there. According to the words of the brothers, Vitaliy came out of contact, and informed about what pídrivâ the bridge. There was an explosion right away. Our brother was killed. His heroic act significantly slowed down the push of the enemy, allowing the unit to relocate and organize defense. The Marine Corps Command will be concerned before the higher command about the awarding of the Skakun sailor Vitaliy Volodymyrovich state award. Russian invaders, know, under your feet the earth will burn! We will fight as long as we live! And as long as we are alive we will fight!"

Check out the Ukrainian police officers who died defending the Snake Island in the Black Sea. A Russian war ship asked them to surrender or they would be bombed. They literally responded "Russian war ship, go f**k yourself!" They were all killed.

Another innocent, undeserving life lost because Putin is a horrible, cruel, dictator. I live in the us but am Russian and have friends and family in both Russia and Ukraine, and this is truly heartbreaking. You never really realize how bad war is until it's affecting people you know and love. May he rest in peace. We love and support you Ukraine!

Lives that shouldn't have had to be in this situation and only were because of one despotic evil dictator. Every Death should be recorded as directly at the hands of Putin and the war crimes should be building up minute by minute. There should be no hope for him ever being outside of Russia ever again. These sons, husbands, partners, fathers and brothers should be alive, going home after work but the evil that created this war sits at home, sending death and destruction while safe and comfortable himself. Filth of a human.

Those unfortunate Ukrainian men died at the hands of Russian COWARDS... blowing away defenceless human beings with ordnance that could take out a city block. There was no justification for the Russians to take that offensive action.

Allow me to paraphrase Admiral William "Bull" Halsey's comment about the enemy (Then, the Japanese); "KILL RUSSIANS, KILL RUSSIANS, KILL MORE RUSSIANS!" Perhaps huge numbers of Russians in body-bags might convince the Russian population that this was NOT a grand idea and, though it seems Czar Vlad might win the battle for Ukraine, he will never win the war. Keep fighting and never give up Ukraine, never give up!

This is so bad. There are so many babies and children and teenagers in Ukraine that may never even get to live because of stupid Putin. They have their whole lives ahead of them, but they may not get the chance to live them. It breaks my heart. There are teenagers my age and I can't think about how many of them could already be dead without crying.

Russians have turned out by the thousands to decry their country’s invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media.
    .
Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were arrested on Thursday, at least 957 of them in Moscow.
    .
As sirens blasted in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and large explosions were heard there and in other cities, Russians were signing open letters and online petitions demanding the Kremlin halt the assault, which the Ukrainian president said had killed at least 137 Ukrainians and wounded dozens more.
    .
One petition, started by a prominent human rights advocate, Lev Ponomavyov, garnered more than 330,000 signatures by the end of the day.
    .
More than 250 journalists put their names on an open letter decrying the aggression. Another one was signed by some 250 scientists, while 194 municipal council members in Moscow and other cities signed a third one.
    .
Several Russian celebrities and public figures, including some working for state TV, spoke out against the attack. Yelena Kovalskaya, director of a state-funded Moscow theatre, announced on Facebook she was quitting her job, saying “it’s impossible to work for a killer and get paid by him”.
    .
Russia’s Investigative Committee issued a warning on Thursday afternoon reminding Russians that unauthorised protests are against the law.
    .
Despite the pressure from the authorities, more than 1,000 people gathered in the centre of Moscow on Thursday evening, chanting “No to war!” as passing cars honked their horns.

When someone can verify one number but suspect it's higher, it's phrased as "at least". As in, "At least one commenter on Bored Panda acts like an idiot on every post."

Public figures are especially in danger. Even Alexi Navalny stood up at his "trial" to decry this action, even though it will mean his sentance will be even longer than what he is going to get for this present charge.

Some of the very first people to be targeted under authoritarian regimes are journalists, teachers, scientists, doctors, authors, and people who speak against these atrocities. They are the ones who are the protectors of truth, knowledge, science, change--everything that the f****r Putin despises.

Might be way to soon to say it, as it is just a wild guess from my part, but I'll go for it anyway : while Putin will eventually win this war on the military ground, he could lose much more on other grounds. Through international reproval and economic sanctions, Russians too are going to pay the high price of his imperialist delusions, and in spite of all the propaganda he can use, they will obviously put the blame on him. He's getting old, and a hard regime falling over an excess of random agressive moves is something that has already been seen in History.

If these women and men were citizens of most any other country, I'd expect this - it's almost a token response. However, this seems extremely brazen and frighteningly brave, seeing as how the world knows how brazenly vengeful and frighteningly disturbed Putin is. I am sure the black square is a reference to the infamous "Black Spot" I am very rusty as to how this story goes but a Russian artist created a simple plain black canvas. I'm not sure if he created it before or after Stalin's edict but abstract and surrealistic art angered Stalin because he hated all abstract art and declared that all art should be somewhat realistic and the subject matter easily identifiable. This guy was thrown in prison for a while until he changed his style. In one of his last paintings before his death he signed it with nothing but a plain black square as an act of defiance.

It's kind of like wearing a black armband in acknowledgement of a death, but this has an extra layer in that these Russian celebrities are posting a media "black armband" publicly in the face of probable persecution by their government. The police can come for them and most likely will, but they are showing dissention with their government's actions regardless.

Of course, what’s happening is terrible and I feel major pity for these innocent people, but with the US military getting involved even more family’s will suffer great loss and depression, my mother runs a charity for the military (Armed services YMCA) and so many families are absolutely terrified about it, on the other hand so many families are suffering in the Ukraine and the power of the US army will help beat this war. Either way, People will suffer and die.

Saw a video on YouTube of a woman videoing out her window when a jet streaked by and fired a rocket which slammed into the base of her home, followed by the frightened wails of her young child as the building shuddered. They are attacking indiscriminately.

If all the Russian soldiers dropped their weapons and go home the war would stop.

Putin is making an ass of himself, to the entire world and also his own people. The Russians are not out enemy, but Putin and his following are.

Queer Jewish Russian here. I can promise you that Putin will not stop with Ukraine. Poland, Estonia, etc, he wants them all. His power has gone unchecked and with so much Russian support he has gone insane. 80%!!! We knew this was coming for years. My Ukrainian friend said this five years ago. He was smoking and crying on his porch last night. I've never seen him cry. It's terrifying because this may very well lead to World War 3. My grandfather survived a Nazi camp just to die in Russian prison. The Germans burned my grandmother's relatives in Poland as she watched. Those who survived had severe mental problems. That trauma stayed for two more generations. It's all happening again. Generations will be affected because another megalomaniac has emerged. I'm in U.S. right now and every Russian I meet is like how dare you say f*** Putin. I don't understand. It's good to see Russians protesting, but I fear it won't matter because Putin doesn't care what anyone thinks. He is a monster.

And if you are wondering what Russians think of America they say " who cares? We have china business now. Americans shoot black people everyday who are they to say anything? " It's as if someone says my neighbor beats his wife so I think I can beat my wife too. In the U.S. and Russia and other countries we see such a rise in nationalism. It's all happening again. Hell is empty, all the demons are here. Edit: I do not agree with this anti American thinking. It's stupid as ****.

People's hearts are in right places, but not the politicians. Germany denied acces to their airspace when defensive weapons were transported to Ukraine. Germany blocked Latvia's initiative to send defensive weapons to Ukraine. Germany refused to support Ukraine with their defensive weapons. Germany blocked SWIFT sanction against Russia. The world sees and remembers.

I saw a video of this on reddit. The tank swerved to its right, seemingly to get to the side of the car and then accelerated onto the car as it was about to pass. Total a55holes. In a longer video that I did not see but was described by a redditor, the man in the car was later seen standing by the car (after others pried him out with great difficulty), implying that he was mostly OK.

We called our friends from Kyiv today. One family is staying in their car in the underground parking lot for a whole day. Everytime they try to leave, they're being shot at. Those people are not even allowed to evacuate. F**k Putin.

I can't believe they actually let Russia into their country to attack Ukraine. It's disgusting and I hope the people who agreed to it pay.

Makes sense, how faulty russian IFF systems are was demontrated in 2014. Of course nobody would risk having civilian aircrafts over that war zone
