At 06:00 Moscow time (03:00 GMT) yesterday, Europe entered its darkest hours since WWII. Putin announced a “military operation” in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region. Immediately, unprecedented armed violence on innocent people of Ukraine followed.
In the coming hours, repeated explosions were heard in Mariupol, Kyiv, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Kherson, and Nikolaev, as it became clear the whole country was under attack. Videos of the capital Kyiv blasted by cruise or ballistic missiles emerged, with roads getting completely clogged with cars as residents desperately tried to escape. In a bid to hide from airstrikes, people packed their bags, bundled up against the cold, and took shelter in underground subway stations. As the world closed its eyes for the night’s rest, here in shelters, men and women, elders and children didn’t dare to fall asleep.
Putin’s war already took the lives of 137 innocent civilians and military personnel on the first day of Russia’s invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Today, Friday the 25th, the fatalities are likely to increase as the country waits for what Anton Herashchenko, an adviser to the country's interior minister, called the war's 'hardest day,' warning of potential tank assault on Kyiv.
Below are the raw and heartbreaking moments of the violent war happening in Ukraine right now. The war that many felt was impossible in the advanced century we live in today. So today the world stands strong with Ukraine.

"The breathtaking bravery of Russian citizens who know they’ll be arrested, and worse, for protesting the war and do it anyway"
It's really heartening to see how many Russians are willing to invite the wrath of the authorities by protesting, knowing that it could result in their not only being imprisoned, but worse.
Yes, i was wondering if the majority would agree to protest (e.g. soldiers refusing to bomb etc), couldn't it help? I mean, i know it's illegal, but they cannot send hundreds of thousand people to prison. How can one person decide in behalf of two nations, made up of millions of people, that they will go to war? There should be a way for the people to have a saying in their own fate. (I know, it's not that simple, just thinking..)

Respect for these people willing to protest against their own country!
To the all Russian citizens who never wanted and oppose this horrible war and gross violations of human rights, I am so sorry for what is happening. I know that many of you have family and friends in Ukraine as well and are scared for your loved ones. It is terrifying that the Russian people who oppose this war have to risk being arrested or worse for protesting. Thank you for your courage. Please stay safe.
I've heard a rumour this morning that some Russian troops are surrendering because they refuse to fight? Anyone confirm? Very brave people indeed if they are doing that.
Only on reddit, i think we will have more proof in some days, we the journalist have gathered and analysed the info

Another thing too is there's going to be Russian expats around the world getting s**t from other people over something that's not their fault.
Unfortunately that happens during most conflicts. Most educated people understand that you are not your country. Its the hateful nationalists they have to worry about.

The whole world knows the Russian citizens aren't in anyway to blame, they are caught up in enough s**t of their own, I salute you all.
We reached out to a native Ukrainian Yev Kanivets, a professional mobile engineer who has witnessed Russia's invasion firsthand. He shared his first-hand account with Bored Panda on what happened the past two days.
Yev was living in Kharkiv, which is one of the major cities attacked by Putin. “I woke up at 5 a.m. from the explosions in MY CITY. I was prepared and lucky enough to evacuate in one hour. There were traffic jams around the city, so we spent almost 2 hours going far enough,” Yev wrote in a heartbreaking post on Linkedin.
“I was lucky to evacuate. My wife and I were driving our car the whole day, 14 hours, like crazy to get as far as we could from the danger. We are exhausted, stressed, and worried about mothers who remained in the Kharkiv region.”
When Yev arrived at Kropivnitskiy, he and his family already had a room booked to stay at night. “The hostess was very nice to us,” he said.
That's actually one of the most effective ways of sticking it to Russia that I can imagine.
IDK creating a whole slew of Putin deep fake furry porn would ruin his image pretty good.

I live next to Russia and I have to say that this is so accurate. Even if I'm shitting my pants, I'll have to keep my act together for my child. This whole situation is so crazy and still people in my country, think that we are somehow different. We aren't. If this a**hole wants to invade our country, he will try. And might even succeed this time. Needless to say that we must do everything in our power to cut their power. And above all, we must not lose hope!
This so sad a parent has to worry about their child. I'm am sorry I am so very sorry. Dear Lord help them
“We didn't eat anything the whole day because of stress and couldn't sleep enough. There were Ukrainian jet-fighters flying over us the whole night, so no bombs were dropped. But we couldn't sleep anyway. We worried a lot about our friends that stayed in Kharkiv, which was bombarded and attacked by tanks,” Yev recounted.
The next morning Yev said they woke up tired, still stressed. “But, obviously, it's much better to wake up because of the sun, not explosions. In this part of Ukraine, there were no fights, no Russian troops, it was much easier to get the fuel,” he said. So they fueled the car and departed to the small city near Uman. “Hot dogs and coffee at the fuel station were our breakfast in the new world,” he said.

The minute he said that the fall of the Soviet Union was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century, that should have been what's known as a clue. I thought to myself, he's going to try to put it back together. All the military put in place surrounding the Ukraine. "Do you think he's REALLY going to invade Ukraine?". Well he's not going to bring it all back to Russia. That would look genuinely weak. What part of pincer, blitzkrieg set up don't you see? "He seems to be just sitting there. When do you think he would invade, if he did?" . HES WAITING UNTIL AFTER THE OLYMPICS ARE OVER! This monster reads like a book. No. He's not going to stop at Ukraine. Brave man. Standing up for his rights and for the rights and freedom of his people. I’m so afraid that they’re doomed without help from other countries. Sanctions are all well and good, but they take time to make an impact and Ukraine needs physical military assistance now.
Putin still thinks of him as a "comedian". Surprising who is a REAL leader when it's all on the line. This is a dangerous move for him, but this is what's known as leadership and loving the people of the country you lead. Putin obviously doesn't know what that is, even when it's punching him in the face.

While driving, Yev and his family visited many small cities. “There was no single person in panic. Everybody stayed calm, friendly, and ready for anything. No problems with goods or resources.”
Because they planned their trip at night and in a hurry, there was a mistake with the booking date. “So when we arrived at Tulchin and asked for our booking we discovered it was for tomorrow. Hence we didn't have a place to spend a night in,” he said.
Yev said that it was the first time we called hotels by phone in our whole lives since he said, “we’re Booking and Airbnb generation.” “We called about a dozen hotels, and all places were taken. Then we tried to increase the area and, finally, found a small room 40 minutes from us. At this point, we were totally exhausted again,” he told us. Yev said that finally, they’re going to sleep well.

President Joe Biden yesterday released a statement condemning Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and called the attack “unprovoked and unjustified.” Biden stated that “Russia alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way.” He assured that “the world will hold Russia accountable.”
On Thursday, Biden unveiled a list of sanctions on Russia to punish the country for its full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. The new sanctions include export blocks on technology, a centerpiece of Biden's approach to limit Russia's advancement of its military and aerospace sector as much as possible. In addition, sanctions were applied on Russian banks and "corrupt billionaires," as well as their families who are close to the Kremlin.
However, there was disappointment that the round of sanctions unveiled by the US and Europe did not remove Russia from the SWIFT financial messaging system. Here is the list of global sanctions applied on Russia for the war in Ukraine.

As much as I hate the situation that is happening right now and support Ukrainians in their fight for freedom and independence, this one is a total b******t. Ukraine's current territory was a part of many empires in the past, including Polish-Lithuanian and Ottoman amongst them, and has become internationally accepted as the Republic of Ukraine at the beginning of the twentieth century. Please do not use false information to deceive and manipulate people, the information on the history of all these architectural monuments is available on the net, and the Ukraine did not even exist as a country then.

THE HEROES OF THE MOMENTUM. Pidled the city together with myself #stoprussia On this difficult day for our country, when the Ukrainian people give away to the Russian occupiers in all directions, one of the hardest places on the map of Ukraine was the Crimean intersection, where one of the first enemies met a separate marine battalion. In order to stop the promotion of the tank column, a decision was made to overthrow the Geniche Car Bridge. The engineer of a separate battalion sailor Skakun Vitaliy Volodymyrovich was called to perform this task. The bridge was replaced, but he didn't have time to get out of there. According to the words of the brothers, Vitaliy came out of contact, and informed about what pídrivâ the bridge. There was an explosion right away. Our brother was killed. His heroic act significantly slowed down the push of the enemy, allowing the unit to relocate and organize defense. The Marine Corps Command will be concerned before the higher command about the awarding of the Skakun sailor Vitaliy Volodymyrovich state award. Russian invaders, know, under your feet the earth will burn! We will fight as long as we live! And as long as we are alive we will fight!"

Russians have turned out by the thousands to decry their country’s invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media.
.
Some 1,745 people in 54 Russian cities were arrested on Thursday, at least 957 of them in Moscow.
.
As sirens blasted in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and large explosions were heard there and in other cities, Russians were signing open letters and online petitions demanding the Kremlin halt the assault, which the Ukrainian president said had killed at least 137 Ukrainians and wounded dozens more.
.
One petition, started by a prominent human rights advocate, Lev Ponomavyov, garnered more than 330,000 signatures by the end of the day.
.
More than 250 journalists put their names on an open letter decrying the aggression. Another one was signed by some 250 scientists, while 194 municipal council members in Moscow and other cities signed a third one.
.
Several Russian celebrities and public figures, including some working for state TV, spoke out against the attack. Yelena Kovalskaya, director of a state-funded Moscow theatre, announced on Facebook she was quitting her job, saying “it’s impossible to work for a killer and get paid by him”.
.
Russia’s Investigative Committee issued a warning on Thursday afternoon reminding Russians that unauthorised protests are against the law.
.
Despite the pressure from the authorities, more than 1,000 people gathered in the centre of Moscow on Thursday evening, chanting “No to war!” as passing cars honked their horns.
When someone can verify one number but suspect it's higher, it's phrased as "at least". As in, "At least one commenter on Bored Panda acts like an idiot on every post."

Public figures are especially in danger. Even Alexi Navalny stood up at his "trial" to decry this action, even though it will mean his sentance will be even longer than what he is going to get for this present charge.
Some of the very first people to be targeted under authoritarian regimes are journalists, teachers, scientists, doctors, authors, and people who speak against these atrocities. They are the ones who are the protectors of truth, knowledge, science, change--everything that the f****r Putin despises.

Someone should maybe remind Putin what happened to the last Tsar that the people didn't support in sending Russian men to war......
Might be way to soon to say it, as it is just a wild guess from my part, but I'll go for it anyway : while Putin will eventually win this war on the military ground, he could lose much more on other grounds. Through international reproval and economic sanctions, Russians too are going to pay the high price of his imperialist delusions, and in spite of all the propaganda he can use, they will obviously put the blame on him. He's getting old, and a hard regime falling over an excess of random agressive moves is something that has already been seen in History.

I'm not sure if he created it before or after Stalin's edict but abstract and surrealistic art angered Stalin because he hated all abstract art and declared that all art should be somewhat realistic and the subject matter easily identifiable. This guy was thrown in prison for a while until he changed his style. In one of his last paintings before his death he signed it with nothing but a plain black square as an act of defiance.
It's kind of like wearing a black armband in acknowledgement of a death, but this has an extra layer in that these Russian celebrities are posting a media "black armband" publicly in the face of probable persecution by their government. The police can come for them and most likely will, but they are showing dissention with their government's actions regardless.

Queer Jewish Russian here. I can promise you that Putin will not stop with Ukraine. Poland, Estonia, etc, he wants them all. His power has gone unchecked and with so much Russian support he has gone insane. 80%!!! We knew this was coming for years. My Ukrainian friend said this five years ago. He was smoking and crying on his porch last night. I've never seen him cry. It's terrifying because this may very well lead to World War 3. My grandfather survived a Nazi camp just to die in Russian prison. The Germans burned my grandmother's relatives in Poland as she watched. Those who survived had severe mental problems. That trauma stayed for two more generations. It's all happening again. Generations will be affected because another megalomaniac has emerged. I'm in U.S. right now and every Russian I meet is like how dare you say f*** Putin. I don't understand. It's good to see Russians protesting, but I fear it won't matter because Putin doesn't care what anyone thinks. He is a monster.
And if you are wondering what Russians think of America they say " who cares? We have china business now. Americans shoot black people everyday who are they to say anything? " It's as if someone says my neighbor beats his wife so I think I can beat my wife too. In the U.S. and Russia and other countries we see such a rise in nationalism. It's all happening again. Hell is empty, all the demons are here. Edit: I do not agree with this anti American thinking. It's stupid as ****.
