Ask any dog owner and they will tell you at least a dozen reasons why these animals are the finest creatures on Earth. However, sometimes even the best have an off day. And when they do, they end up on the subreddit r/DogShaming!

It's a place where people share amusing pictures of their naughty pups after they have eaten all the donuts, covered the patio in pee, or committed some other unforgivable crime.

Continue scrolling to meet the suspects and don't miss the conversation I had about guilt in dogs with Kate Litaker, Dogtown Lifesaving and Care Supervisor for Best Friends Animal Society.

Pretty much any dog will look like that if you make them sit & pose for a picture with a piece of paper touching them (mine looks like that if she even SEES my camera)... Or if you PRETEND they were "bad" (they aren't, they're just dogs being dogs).

    In some of these pics, it appears that the pups are repenting for their "sins." However, even though dogs can learn what their owners consider appropriate and inappropriate behavior, we still aren't sure if they feel guilt.

    "I personally don't think that dogs feel guilt, their reaction is just a response to environmental stimuli and human reactions," Kate Litaker, the staffer at Best Friends, told Bored Panda.

    ADVERTISEMENT

    Scientists don't have a concrete answer as well. In a 2009 study, researchers observed dogs and their owners under several sets of circumstances and concluded that dogs tended to display "guilty" body language more frequently when their owners scolded them than when the owners remained neutral – regardless of whether the dogs had actually done anything wrong.

    Dog cognition scientist and author Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, who was in charge of the research, said that "a better description of the so-called guilty look is that it is a response to owner cues, rather than that it shows an appreciation of a misdeed."

    When I was a kid and we were going somewhere we tied our doggo on the terrace , gave him food and water to last couple of hours . He heard our scooter's sound going somewhere god knows how he removed his collar and jumped from the first floor . When we returned a kind neighbor gave refuge to him till we came back . No serious injuries , Just got a slight sprain in leg . After that we never left him alone.

    What about you? What would you do if you came back home after a long day and your four-legged buddy greeted you with shreds of your favorite jacket?

    Litaker said an appropriate reaction would be to act excited to see your dog, clean up the mess, and work on preventing it from happening in the future. For example, maybe put all of your clothes inside the wardrobe and toss a nice chew toy on the floor instead.

    "One of my office dogs did destroy my window blinds and house plants trying to escape the room because she was left alone in the office," Litaker recalled. "She really preferred the company of another dog or humans, so I didn't leave her alone in the room anymore."

    Had a lab like this too, except she would still try to get to beer no matter what. She loved county fairs, and was the reason the fair made the rule to keep in progress drinks off the ground - because if you didn't keep an eye on her then she would try (and fail because we wouldn't let her) to quaff your remaining beer.

    According to the American Kennel Club, when we consider a dog looking guilty, we usually mean it displays some or all of the following behaviors or signs:

    • Tucked tail;
    • Visible whites of the eyes;
    • Cowering, hunched posture;
    • Yawning;
    • Licking;
    • Flattened ears;
    • Avoiding eye contact.

    These expressions are signs of fear and stress in dogs. But determining if they truly feel bad about breaking our rules is tricky. Guilt is a complex concept.

    It requires an understanding of cause and effect in relation to time, which is difficult to prove. Plus, dogs can't use words to describe how they feel either, so we are really running out of options here!

    ADVERTISEMENT

    There can be a number of reasons why dogs act out. "They can become destructive or have an accident because they are bored, because it's fun, or because they didn't like being alone," Kate Litaker added. "Providing interactive toys and food puzzles when you're not home, and plenty of playtime and exercise when you are home can help prevent these types of behaviors."

    I would wonder if they are bored or seeking-attention, it's not good to have grown dogs still chewing your non-food stuff up, not to mention the danger they put themselves in, this should be gone after puppyhood ideally.

    You don't know how much they are walked or played with. Some dogs just get into things. I had a beagle name Bagel that would chew everyone in the houses stuff except mine. The others didn't care for him much but were never unkind to him. Bagel got plenty of attention and exercise and no one was mean to him at all and he still ate and Chewed. Also had a black lab that would tear into trash and eat things because she had separation anxiety and we did everything to try to combat it and help her through it but she's still Occasionally do it so.. Misbehaving dogs doesn't alway equal inattentive or bad owners.

    Hate to rain on the laughs but if the dog swallows a bit of Can, it can die of a punctured bowel, or tear its mouth up. ... Kind of cute, yes, but at what point do you lock the damn cans up so the dog can't get to them?

    Really? Is pineapple really okay for them to eat? A fellow dog walker and I have been trying to come up with ways of solving this conundrum for a while now! Would tinned pineapple (not in syrup of course) do the job?

    There is stuff you can sprinkle on their food to stop it. Makes the poop taste bad. Ask the pet store or local vet. Search engine should turn it up too.

    It's a way to slow down fast eaters. Some bowls are pretty complicated, and the dogs need to nose open flaps to get their food or turn something to the right angle. This one just looks like a simple maze.

    Soap is basically lipids (fat) with chemical polarities reversed (so it binds with fat and breaks lipid molecular electrochemical attraction), so unfortunately it may seem like animal fat to a dog

    AGAIN - NOT FUNNY!!!!!!!!! Is it me or should all of the dogs on here be taken off their owners IMMEDIATELY and given to families who can actually take care of them?????? We have an old dog who is mostly blind and our two younger, larger dogs are the exact opposite of helpers to their old brother! They just push right past him to go inside and outside. I'm constantly like, "KYLO! MINNY! WATCH OUT FOR NEKO, DANGIT!" They just don't care at all. Rude!

    If they're cataracts, then surgery can take care of this. There's no need for the dog to be blind.

    On older dogs it can be too risky to operate. My dog is a traumatised rescue, it would be far too distressing for him to be operated on and dogs cope very well with going blind. They don't have the emotional concerns and worries that people have. A young, healthy dog that hasn't been through trauma, yes.

    I mean to an animal negative attention is still attention so most people would reinforce it without even meaning to. Most people are not going to just let the dog shred something and sit by silently and let it happen. It's simply that most people probably don't know how to respond appropriately.

    My Vizsla appears out of nowhere every time I touch the butter dish. The small "clank" of raising the porcelain lid doesn't even register in my brain but apparently it travels throughout the house. She doesn't come running into the kitchen; she instantly and quietly appears at my side with hopeful eyes and her best behavior. And this is all before I've even touched my toast with the butter.

    I fostered a GSD for a year, he couldn’t stand to be left alone due to anxiety. On the few occasions when he was briefly left alone he managed to destroy a door, get on the work top and start the gas on the hob, ripped all the wiring out of the boiler, chewed plugs off various appliances, unlocked a cabinet and ate all the fat out the deep fat fryer giving himself diarrhoea and ate the face off the teddy bear I’d had since birth. I took him to a PDSA psychologist who said his behaviour was due to terrible anxiety. Worth bearing in mind if your dog is destructive.

    Oh dear, what a troublemaker! But look at that face, he clearly can't be left alone. My dog chewed the frames of my doors when she was a pup and I left her alone, she's 3 now and ate the driver leather seat of my vwbug I've sent her to doggie daycare before lockdown , she's 3, but my friends tell me kennels is great for them just google 5star kennels in your area. I haven't sent my pooch anywhere yet but my aunt let her 2 dogs there for 2 nights and the dogs were fine, didn't over react to her return which means soooooo much to a dog owner. Of course I always want my pooch with me, but knowing there's somewhere else willing to mind my pooch, I'm just worried my baby will have to sleep outside, will the friends be coupled? She's very skittish and prefers me to any other dog?could be besties with a dangerous breed and be dead in the morning.

    Probably it was an accident something broke and the puppy went to the glasses first! I assume that he was taken to the vet and he is fine and the photo was taken after! We don't need to think of the worst scenario... accidents happen very easily

    Today my kitten sat at my feet and cried while I mixed white paint in the studio. She thought it was the Dairy Queen soft serve I had given her a taste of the day before and wanted some. She did not get any. She also managed to fall into the toilet just as I raised the lid, and almost jumped up onto the gas range as I made dinner. She is currently batting an unshelled peanut around on the floor.

    Oh god when my parents dog was a puppy we had to watch her all the time or she eat gum, sigarite buds or rocks. She is 6 years old and still alive, its just rocks and sheep or rabbit poop now.

    Not dumb, but young and learning. Puppies explore by putting things in their mouths. It's up to us to teach them, and to keep unsafe things out of their reach.

    Since it wasn't said where the glass was found, or how many times it was eaten, you should not have jumped to conclusions. You certainly should not have implied through what you said, and through emoticons, that the owner is not a good one. Can we say RUDE?

    This is not funny AT ALL. On what planet do you think this belongs in the Funny Section of Bored Panda?. Yes exactly get the dog to the Vet pronto and then give it to a family who will actually really look after it! That's if its not already dead. Moron!

    We used to have to leave all doors closed when we left our home. I am a librarian and someone didn't close the door when we left the house one time. Came home to several shredded library books. That was an embarrassing story to tell at work when I paid for the books!
