Everything has a life cycle. So after Reddit user WarBeast86 made a post on the platform, asking: "What was ruined because too many people did it?" people have been paying respects to their life's treasures that have been (slowly) fading into irrelevance.
Some of the most common examples focus on over-saturated internet trends; for example, influencer culture has become so prevalent that it has led to a loss of authenticity and genuine connection online. Numerous hobbies and activities such as thrift shopping have also been mentioned as hurting from commercialization which, in turn, has led to a loss of their original appeal.
Overall, the post serves as a vivid reminder that it's important to appreciate the stuff that makes you happy because you never know when it can be taken away from you.

Basically anything outdoorsy. Hiking trails, National Parks, fishing spots, etc.
It's fun when you're the only person on the trail, the lake, or at the camp site. It's not so fun when you're hiking and someone is blasting their music on their Bluetooth speaker, when the lake is packed and people decide to fish 10 feet away from you and are obnoxiously loud, or you go to a National Park and there is graffiti and trash everywhere, random people's names carved into the largest and oldest trees on Earth, and mobs of tourists taking selfies in the middle of the trail.
People don't know how to respect nature. People don't appreciate silence. People don't know how to "leave no trace" or appreciate the natural beauty in the world around them.
Well, we're always "one of those people" for the other people... It's like saying "there's too much traffic" when you're in your car...
Depends where you are in the world...... 75% of Australia is still empty..... Where I used to live in the north of South Australia( state), I'd ride my old vespa scooter out into the desert, and you could go for a 1000 km and still not come across any sign of human habitation.....
Same in Canada! I've been on mulit-day hikes in a few national parks where I didn't see another person for the entire trip. I've never experienced an overly crowded hike.
Load More Replies...I'm still irritated about being told to move out of some lady's photo frame when I had hiked like 5 miles to get to a scenic overlook in the mountains.
I couldn't agree with you more. It's just terrible. Here I am explaining to my kids to speak low, enjoy the sounds of nature and then some asswipe comes around the corner talking so loud - or playing rap. No one says good morning or give a greeting anymore. EVEN when you say it first!
I Live near Yellowstone. People try to ride the freaken bison. Like why
Subscription everything...especially software. I want to buy Office/AutoCAD one time and use it for a decade. I don't want to buy it every year.
Agree. This is awful. You're forever paying for a product and never owning it outright.
I feel the same for Adobe products. I'd gladly use a 12 year old Photoshop that I last had a license to, but can't. I don't have the money to throw, since all I do there is silly photo edits.
Try gimp. It's a free download IIRC, and adequate for very basic uses such as this
Load More Replies...Bingo. I still use my Adobe CS6 collection bought in college and I have NO intentions to change that.
You can still buy a one time license for Office(you don't have to do the Office 365 thing) for now. Adobe products are a different story though.
Oh my.... Never buy a BMW then lol, especially if you live in a cold country....
Craft fairs. Now they're crowded with dozens of MLMs. I just want to find knitted slippers made by an old lady who clearly has a drinking problem, not more Norwex.
For anyone not in the know, MLM = multi level marketing. Basically pyramid schemes pretending not to be pyramid schemes like Amway, JuicePlus, Younique, Osbourne Books, BodyShop at Home, etc etc. The people who sell this at craft fairs, to friends and family and so on are actually the customers and usually make little to no profit, but the business model works on gaslighting. Really worth a google, very interesting and good to be aware of.
The illuminaughti on YouTube has done loads of videos exposing mlms.
Load More Replies...Ugh... MLMs... otherwise known as "The reason you should be wary when a classmate from 30 years ago who you barely knew suddenly messages you" - and hey... I don't have a drinking problem... but I can make crochet'd slippers! (sigh. Yes... a little nonplussed that craft fairs are getting choked to death with ... well.. NON-CRAFTS)
Agreed! Though I dont mind if the non-craft items are materials to make crafts. Ive seen a few lately where a smaller local craft store has had a booth selling some of the basic equipment and supplies needed or even little kits they assembled with everything needed and directions to make a simple craft. Those can be fun and give them visibility.
Load More Replies...At first I was like what is wrong with gay people then I realized mlm is multi level marketing and makes way more sense
🤭 I wish more of that kind of mlm showed up to craft fairs! Much more creative and fun than running into an MLM reseller.
Load More Replies...Thankfully doesn't seem to be a problem in the UK. Craft Fairs are craft fairs. Usually independent sole traders from the local area, selling unique items...
Unfortunately, I have seen MLMs sneaking in at some, usually when the event co-ordinators are unaware of what they are or that is actually an MLM :(
Load More Replies...Add Etsy! It's smothered with Amazon-level foreign mass manufacturers. Not that it matters where a maker is from but its not right that mass manufacturing poses as a 'maker'
Etsy is a h o t m e s s! I've started reporting those kinds of pages whenever I catch a bunch of em til I hit a certain point of anxiety, throw my hands in the air, then say "at least I've made a small dent"; I don't think Etsy takes much more action than ban the account (which I'm sure a new clone will pop up as soon as they do), but I keep hoping maybe I'll inspire others to start joining me and make it annoying for them at the very least. I'm sure MANY of these stores are just additional channels from the same people. If you suspect a store, check the Etsy TOS and flag these people (ex: copyright violations, misinfo/misleading)! I am a major proponent of fan *art*, but this ain't it!
Load More Replies...Really? What're they doing, selling tights next to their honey? Didn't even think that was allowed...well, I'm sorry you have to put up with that. Maybe speak to the county running the market? They might put a stop to it.
Load More Replies...I remember when I was a kid and I helped mom and grandma sell their stuff at craft fairs that MLM stuff wasn't even allowed. When did that change?
I grew up going to craft fairs - my mom did a lot of art/crafts -- and the culture was so wonderful. I miss getting up early, smelling that specific cafeteria coffee & food prep smell and setting up. The crafts used to be interesting at least, but now, yeah... a lot of MLMs
Oh my gosh yes!!! I used to love the little craft fairs that would be at rec centers or churches. Debbie and her friends would craft stuff all year and then sell it everyone like it was designer stuff. It was adorable!!! Now it's all bougie and stuff. I don't go to them any more because it's no fun.....
declaring their pets as service animals when they are not., thus making it extremely difficult for actual service animals to get their certification, or permission to be around to provide their service
"Emotional support" animals. Every pet is one - doesn't mean it's a service animal.
Emotional Support animals, usually dogs, are useful for people with severe PTSD. I read a story of a soldier who had trouble with something as simple as a grocery store. What’s at the end of the aisle? What’s in the next aisle when we head in there. A way they needed to think in order to stay alive and protect their fellow soldiers. Now, it’s just a grocery store. An emotional support dog made all the difference. But the people who are trying to rip that off are low.
Load More Replies...Is this mostly a US thing? I ask because it's unheard of in my country to have anything but a dog, usually a seeing eye dog or one trained to recognise seizures etc. Just wondering if other countries have, like, "emotional support hyenas".
I speak as a handler from the US. The ADA defines a service animal as a dog or mini horse that have been trained to mitigate a disability. An ESA only requires a dr's note and no training because they provide their service simply by existing. There is NO legally recognized certification. ALL of those web sites are SCAMS. The ADA does not require any certification, or that the dog wear any particularly marked gear. Some counties do offer reduced Licensing for service animals and offer an alternative license that does identify the dog as a service Animal, but that is voluntary. In the US, service dogs go through about 2 years of intensive training on everything from manners to tasking. Many wash out because they simply cannot deal with the stress. ESA's are only covered by the Fair Housing Administration and are afforded *NO* public access rights, only that they be allowed in housing situations that are not pet friendly. They typically require a doctors note stating their purpose.
Thanks for the explanation fellow fox. The issue is no way to apply the law. Whatever dog you have for example, there’s no means to check neither if it’s a service animal, an ESA, or simply just your dog. Isn’t this the real issue ? Laws created without means to enforce them.
Load More Replies...It's an US thing and BP is fairly international. It becomes bad because in the US the shop or company is not allowed to ask about documentation. Therefore anyone can bring their "service dog" in the shop. It's like if you didn't have to display a handicap sticker to park in the handicap spot and nobody were allowed to check, then everyone would just park there.
Service Dog Handler here and that is a prevalent misunderstanding. Per the ADA in the US, you are allowed to ask 2 questions. 1. Is that a service Dog and 2. What task has that dog been trained to do. A legit team will have zero issue answering you because we know to expect it and we know it means you care. Many places have given up because people get really nasty when caught in their lies.
Load More Replies...I have an ESA animal. But it’s an old neutered and declawed cat. I have a physicians letter and my animal has registration. I actually have clinical depression. But I don’t take my cat to restaurants and everywhere else. It’s really unfortunate that some people abuse the concept of an emotional support animal like have every weird a$$ animal under the sun and expect to take it on a plane. No, your snake is not an ESA animal just because you want him to be. Grrrr.
People just want to be able to bring their pets with them pretty much anywhere.
I’m the US, there is no government certification program. What there is, is legitimate service training. My service dog, now 16, was trained with me when he was a pup. It wasn’t free, but it was sponsored by a service dog program. After quite a bit of training and additional training, all I had to do was use him as a service dog. Which I did. There’s no registering. No official card or identification. It’s simply what my dog was trained to do and what he does. Anyone can buy vests, ID cards, certificates, whatever. Even in Amazon. It would be nice if there was some official and formal registration. Unfortunately as of now, that decreases access for legitimate use rather than simply weed out imposters. Hopefully that gets fixed. Part of allowing unfettered access to public services and spaces is to minimize treating someone with a disability as different ergo an obstacle. People use wheelchairs when they don’t need them. Imagine having to prove your need. That restricts access itself.
Load More Replies...The bad thing is that there are real "emotional service animals" and due to the people lying it's not believed as truth. Some people are suicidal and their pets are a main part of keeping them healthy. Therapists can legally make the animal declared as "human status" (thus, if you injure them on purpose it's the same as injuring a nother human). We know someone that had this relationship with their cat. They weren't rude about it, however, and sought out places, if any, they could stay at that allowed pets.
A therapist can recommend it, but they can only designate an animal as emotional support and not service. Emotional support animals have protections but only service animals are treated as human by the law, in the USA at least. A service animal has to be trained to accomplish a specific task and calming anxiety or depression doesn't meet that requirement as things currently stand
Load More Replies...Emotional support animals need therapy to endure their neurotic owners. We're supposed to take care of them, not the other way around!
Tipping culture in America. I can justify a standard 18-20% for good service in bars/restaurants. Why the actual f**k am I being asked to tip 20-30%+ for carry out to eat at home or when I buy retail goods?
I don’t think the tipping culture in America was ever good. Just seems to me like a whole country has been gaslighted (gaslit?) into believing it’s ok for an employer to not pay people a living wage. Crazy. 🤷♀️
It's not always the case, but in one treat a user asked waiters what they would change if there were no tips and they were paid a living wage and many commented they wouldn't work in the industry if there were no tips because they could never get such a high wage. So employers not paying enough is one of the problems, and the main one I'd say, but a crowd of people getting more in tips than they would get in wages is definitely not in a hurry to change anything
Load More Replies..."I can justify a standard 18-20% for good service in bars/restaurants" You people shouldn't and it's not justifiable. Fight for a livable wage for staff even if you are not one. No, food cost will not be tripled, that is a b******t lie they say to defend this system.
??? Obviously they won't be tripled, as adding the 20% you'd usually just pay in tips as standard to prices would only increase the prices by 20%, not 200%... Where did they even get that from lmao? When tipping culture dissappears the service fee will just be calculated into the food prices instead like in most other countries, so you'll pay about the same as usual. The price would only actually increase for people who are shoddy tippers to start with :/ It'll mostly help servers get a more stable income, though it might cause them to earn less if the service fee is less than what they would usually recieve in tips in some establishments, but still liveable. Edit: just because it isn't explicitly listed as a 'service fee' does not mean the prices aren't higher to also pay for the service along with the price of the food you're eating and the fee of having it prepared by the cooks ya dingdongs. Restaurants aren't gonna be willing to earn less just to pay their servers more 🙄
Load More Replies...Tipping should be banned. Pay your workers a living wage! No, it doesn't encourage "lazy" waitresses. You need only to go to any restaurant outside of the US to know that simply isn't true.
They're lazy anyway, but now they get mad at the clients
Load More Replies...wow, I didn't know it had gotten that bad! My hubby and I stopped eating out when the pandemic hit in 2020 and now we rarely eat food out of the house. Anytime we do, like on vacation we are shocked by the prices. But I didn't know about the tipping for carry out... like WTF man
As someone who works on tips, I agree it's gotten bad from both ends. The problem is not the tipping over the percentage. It's just tipping in general. The IRS has come at a lot of us with this "tip compliance" thing abd think that we get tipped 30 to 50 percent and tax us to holy hell based on that. If we don't get tipped we lose money. It's gotten so that it feels like we have to pay just to earn.
Who you tip has expanded but so has how much. When I was young, 10% was considered an acceptable tip. Then the industry started suggesting "10-15%". Then some years later it was "15-20%". And now A few times I've seen 25% suggested. The excuse given is along the lines of "blah blah prices have gone up". Yes, they have. The total bill is much higher than it used to be so at any tip level, the total tip is going to be much higher as well.
if we’d ALL stop tipping those places would have to pay a decent wage… we know it camn be done, we just keep letting businesses get away with being greedy
Streaming services. I miss the days of one single service: Netflix. Now every studio has its own service and holds their stuff away from services like Netflix and Hulu. Direct consequence: too many subscriptions! At this point it’s more economical to buy stuff you want to watch
I would like to rotate subs, but I fear I'd end up forgetting to cancel stuff.
Load More Replies...I've said this before- The only way for companies to actually discourage piracy is to make the paid option more accessible and convenient than the illegal one. All this carving up of the market does is make people turn to illegal means again, and by wanting a slice of the pie, these 47 streaming services just ensure that NONE of them actually get pie.
I rotate subscriptions too, but what really gets me with the streaming services is when they hold some movies (and tv shows) for ransom behind a VOD paywall. Apple and Amazon are the worst for this in my experience. Like Apple wanting me to pay $20 per season of a tv show from 1995. hahaha no.
Well, we wanted ala carte entertainment instead of bloated cable packages filled with channels we never watch, and this is it. I personally just have Netflix, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video. If it's not on those platforms, I just won't see it.
Wait until the season of the show is over, buy one month subscription, watch it, watch whatever else you can find that is finished, cancel. Rinse and repeat. This is dreadful for the shows viewership though, because next seasons will not be done if there is not enough "interest". Or there is interest, just not for the streaming service c*ap
They just replace cable they said they would kill it only to come back just the same. The time is coming where all the cheaper streaming option will have ads. It is the best way to bring in money. Not everyone wants to pay the high price to be ad free.

ETSY - It's all resellers that run fake craft stores selling cheaply made junk. There's a handful of crafters on ETSY, and the rest is amazon resellers and cheap chinese stuff.
And they still charge "homemade" prices on the resold products/cheap Chinese stuff.
We are spoiled by (essentially) slave labor prices. If it takes me 10 hours to make a fully custom blocked felt hat, multiply that by your hourly wage and tell me if you'd be willing to pay that.
Load More Replies...I used to sell my custom made memory quilts on Etsy but was pushed out by all of the fake handmade sellers. They list their factory made junk at lower prices so those of us that make things by hand can’t compete.
I used to have an Etsy shop, where I sold the jewelry I made (I'm a metalsmith). In the early days, yes, it was populated by artists and crafters and the odd antique seller. Sadly, it has been overrun with retailers selling c**p you can get anywhere, which detracts from the artists who are still there trying to sell their work. But they're still out there, you've just gotta search for them.
I look at where it is coming from - anything from China willing to ship to the US is immediately out.
Load More Replies...its why I am very selective and research people on Etsy. When I bought some book shelving, the person actually was willing to show me his workshop on skype. And it was good quality stuff. A different person I was buying hand crafted wood cases from as gifts, also did the same thing. The real small crafters are excited to show you their workshop and discuss with you how they do it, and show it all off. I know those people are legit, and buy from them
This... incenses me. It really skews the perspective of consumers who (unfortunately) get a really WRONG idea of how much effort it takes to actually *make something by hand* - they've become used to being able to request 'anything' from the resellers because, hey, it's actually just Amazon and whatever factory they're running! So they get upset when they happen upon an actual crafter... and get quoted a true price - or get turned down because the crafter is presented with a rando picture from a google search and the customer is like "How much to make this??" - and all you can think is "That looks like absolutely nothing I sell or make... why do you think I can/would make that?"
I still like Etsy. But I tried to sell my own products there and it was a pain in the butt. Might be why quality has gone down
This 100%. Etsy has penalised me for stuff yet doesn’t for all this mass produced landfill toot that people are pedalling
I disagree with that. Can't buy from Etsy due to coin exchange making everything luxury brand price in my country but I've seen many homemade stuff I love there that I never see anywhere else, clothes on my style, cosplay stuff, even s3x toys.
A lot of things you don't realise are fakes or nor handmade. Most of them don't even bother taking other pictures and you find the same ones on AliExpress.

Airbnb.

Used to love Airbnb years ago. Now, it's pricier than a lot of decent hotels, and some of the house rules are nutty.
I just got scammed recently and all Airbnb could tell me was leave a bad review, which of course the host did too, with a lot of made up bullsh*t. Even if it was cheaper than hotels, it is not worth to be exposed to this nonsense.
I think once it was cheaper than hotels. Nowadays with all the crazy fees and so on, it's easy to find a nice hotel at least with the same price, sometimes even less.
Load More Replies...It's also wrecking the real estate market. It's hard for young people to afford a home already and adding investors buying properties to rent on Airbnb has made it more difficult if not impossible.
More so, corporations getting into the real estate market, along with REIT's, has destroyed "the American dream." I don't understand why more people haven't demanded some government action to at least reign it in, if not reverse it. Yes, it's likely to fall upon deaf ears, but it's worth a try.
Load More Replies...I hate Airbnb. Destroyed the citie´s status quo. Threw away the locals and replaced them with tourists, skyrocketed the estate prices. Airbnb was the most evil startup ever (maybe share places with facebook)
It was good for staying in people's spare rooms but it's just another hotel app now.
My family just rented a house over New Years and somehow the extra fees came to over $600 for a 3-night stay! Last time I use one of these companies for sure.
Never really understood why people would want to stay in a stranger's home. I think it was the novelty of it all, but that's all wearing off. Plus a $100/night place ends up being $550 with all the bullsh*t fees. Not to mention the absurd instructions, like having to wash the sheets and take out the garbage. Just go back to staying at a hotel/motel. Much less of a hassle and cheaper, too.
i’m certainly not going to stay somewhere that requires/wants me to do spring cleaning when i leave.. deposits are for trashing places of this type… i will happily pay for laundry and cleaning services…i’m on vaca , not a cleaning vaca
I was planning me and my husband's anniversary trip to Chicago, trying to keep it on the cheaper side since we are going overseas in the fall. I ended up booking a 3 star hotel with free breakfast for the same price as the Airbnb's in the area where I would still have to buy groceries and prepare my own breakfast
College almost guaranteeing a good job and career. It is not the ticket it used to be. Over, over, over saturated.
There's a shortage of plumbers and electricians in The Netherlands at the moment. People who know how to make and repair things are getting a very good salary now too.
We have the same problem here in the Unites States. A whole generation of young people were raised to look down at blue collar jobs thinking they don't pay well and they are completely wrong.
Load More Replies...Except, you still have to have a degree if you expect to get an interview, let alone a job. It is now treated like a high school diploma used to be.
My university degree I worked years for on mostly night school to get, didn’t get my anywhere. If I was younger, I would go back for training for a trade and tell younger people to do so.
Oh preach!!! I went to college in the 90's and even then it was starting to go this way. My hubby and I have told our children that we want them to take a year off after high school to figure out what they want to do in life before deciding if they want to go to college. They might find that a trade school does the trick. It's becoming a scam!
Anything that is hands on fix or build skill set is under represented. Technicians, technologists, any trades related skills are being paid great wages. Stop the over selling of the business major, law or marketing c**p. More programers, engineers, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, project managers, instrumentation, etc are needed. What do you think the boomers where getting their money from? It wasnt by being an influencer. 6 figure jobs - HVAC Technician. ... Plumbers. ... Aircraft and Avionics Equipment Mechanics and Technicians. ... Mechanical Insulator. ... Construction Managers. ... Electricians. ... Cement/Concrete Mason. ... Elevator Mechanic.
When I investigated for my own decision making, I found that salary is around 10% more for a bachelor degree than without, another 10% more for a masters degree. There is a lower risk of being unemployed with more education. Probably also a better chance of getting an interesting job.
It is tough to ask an 18 year old to decide what degree to get that will sustain them throughout their entire working life. How many of us know people who have a degree in “xx” but have never actually worked in that profession? I believe colleges need to offer more generalized degrees so that a person can actually use that education their entire lives. Community colleges do a better job at this, offering degrees that a person can actually use. And usually much cheaper tuition!
Some folks are gifted with their hands...we need to raise them up and appreciate their gifts. Carpenters, welders, auto mechanics (both combustion and electric), tilers, masons, plumbers...these folks make my life easier and I'm happy to pay them for what I can't do myself. Let's celebrate them and their skills!
Exactly how much time have you spent on a college campus? Out of curiosity. I've worked at a large university for 10 years, and unless you think "you need to be respectful of others and allow their right to be different from you" is an agenda, then you're just flat a*s wrong and need to watch less Fox News.

Exactly. Discussions were actual discussions because the time had not yet come to pass when every self-proclaimed social justice warrior was simply able to regurgitate the last pulled-from-the-a$$ tiktok/tweet/goat bleat (who just needed to 'say' something even though they literally have no understanding of the words they're using)...

Thrift shopping.
charlesdexterward replied:
Yup. 15 years ago the prices were soooo cheap and you could always find a gem. Now they’re always crowded and everything is overpriced and you might find something good once every 2-3 visits if you’re lucky
Perhaps a sign of the times? rather than you finding your bargain, the economics are pushing more people into shopping at these places.
It's not just that more people are shopping there... there are social media "influencers" that are buying up the good stuff to resell. Plus the thrift stores have started upping their prices. My kids and I go to goodwill all the time and I have noticed the increase big time. An old lamp used to cost you $4-5 but now they are $15+. These thrift stores see the higher demand so they are pushing up prices.
Load More Replies...The problem is this: people have made Etsy or other online shops where they resell items they have found in thrift stores. I actually have family members who make part of their income off this. They go into thrift stores to buy quality clothing for cheap that they then turn around and sell it on Etsy for $50+ because it’s “vintage.” I thought it was cool at first, but now I have read several articles online about how this practice has driven up the prices at thrift stores. Thrifting saw a huge increase in popularity over the last decade or so which was awesome. But then people decided to use their “fashion expertise” to flip clothes. And my family who does this told me they don’t even make that much money off it. They can’t spend more than $3-$5 on an item or they don’t profit because of the cost of selling online, shipping, etc. So why continue to make things worse for those of us who legit shop at thrift stores and aren’t just there cus it’s trendy?
And I’m not talking about people who buy broken down furniture, flip it, and sell it. That’s different, you are actually working on or restoring the item, not just selling it as is for a higher price.
Load More Replies...Not sure what it's like elsewhere but in Ontario, we have a problem that has nothing to do with other shoppers. Our thrift stores have all set up virtual auction sites in parallel to their retail stores. Because of this the store now pre bargain hunts for all the old steals and sells those online. Leaving the store to start at picked over and with few really unusual bargains. I used to go on my lunch break but it's not worth it when I'm competing nationally for the good stuff. Still a great place for new used clothes etc.
I used to work at a thrift shop. After that experience, I'm a little wary of thrifting since I've seen some rather nasty things. Books, DVDs, appliances, and one of a kind items are what makes thrifting interesting but for apparel, I would rather buy brand new. They usually don't washing clothing, they just take it out of the bag, price it, and put it out on the floor without cleaning them. Sometimes, they can be covered in human excrement as some people not bother washing clothes before donating them, the stench is horrid. And it's really really dusty inside the store.
I work in a thrift store, too, and do buy clothes that look new to newish. They go straight in the hamper when I bring them home. The store I work at has several people analyzing clothes. If anything is stinky, too dirty, stained, human excrements, tattered all get tossed in the trash. Everything, no matter what, should be washed down. But damn that 50% discount makes it addictive.
Load More Replies...Another problem is fast fashion...a lot of clothes aren't made to last very long anymore...that Forever 21 tank top you wore 10x already has a hole in the seam and the button on the $20 jeans from H&M comes out after a few months...
This is the biggest problem. I am never looking for fast fashion, and there is mostly that. Back in the 80s-90s you could still find the most amazing things without even trying. I had this collection of 1940s rayon dresses, and little black dresses from the 60s that would now cost a fortune from a vintage shop, I would pay less than 10 for each. Now it takes a while.
Load More Replies...You can always go back down one level in your thrift stores. There will always be ARC or Good Sam stores selling 5 year old blouses on Tuesdays for $1. It's easy to get sucked into higher and higher stores until you forget the real thrift for the $500 Levis jean reseller.
Former keyholder for Goodwill here.... For those who are complaining about pricing, let me help you out on something.... Stop donating TRASH. While it may be a tax write off, people like ME and the employees have to get paid. Just because it's used doesn't mean it's supposed to be cheap. Nor does it mean that you're supposed to give us your junk. There is no set pricing guidelines. A lot of the pricing is done by the high functioning special needs folks they hire. A lot of them have no clue to what pricing does or how it goes. If something is good/great condition, it is gauged by googling it, then priced.
and Goodwill is researching everything and selling stuff online more than in the store
This is because the shops realized the number of people coming in, buying stuff up, and then reselling them for way more online is a thing. So they just assumed that they should also get a cut of that pie and raised prices across the board. It has been a nightmare.
Living in Iceland got f****d up due to Iceland becoming a popular tourist destination. Prices are way up, housing has skyrocketed (lots of reasons, big one being air bnb) and our nature monuments are slowly being eroded by dumbass tourists. I'm a native, but I can barely afford to live here anymore 😢
The same any place in the world that is a nice place to live. Property value goes sky high. Property taxes then go up accordingly. Retired folk who lived there for years are forced to move out because they cannot afford the new property tax level.
Iceland was incredibly expensive when I went there twenty years ago, can't imagine what it would be like now if it's gotten worse.
I read about tourists destroying the moss/lichen. Driving and walking all over it.
same with Florida. The locals are being pushed out by wealthy northerners
I feel you. Somehow I saw the dumbest and most annoying tourists when I was in Iceland. Iceland is like a sacred place to me with all it'samazing nature and history. I remember going to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck and there was an idiot climbing on top of the wreck, which is forbidden. It is both dangerous (people have died there) and also could destroy the wreck even further. Also you ruin everyone else's time there, we didn't come all the way here to look at you, a**hole. Anytime I see a picture on Instagram with people standing on the plane I sink into a deep rage.
Enjoying nature. Turn the damn music off you inbred.
Drowning out nature sounds with loud music never made sense to me. If you want to live in a loud noisy place, stay in town and don’t come to the country.
I was camping once in the middle of nowhere. Sure enough someone else comes up and starts to set up camp about thirty yards away from us. I walked over to our truck and cranked up some tunes. The other campers complained and I told them I was there first. They packed up and left and I turned off the music and enjoyed my solitude in nature.,
Nature videos with music. I don't want the music. I want to hear the nature. The wind, the water, the birds & critters. Not the music!
this comes from people spending too much time in technology. They don't know how to exist in quite. I see it in my youngest kid. She tells us all the time that she hates quite.
The ear buds constantly. I don’t get it either. Quiet is good, soothes the soul. Quiet….

Cooking shows. It used to be a few talented chefs who had shows to teach. Now it’s every damn celebrity who can or cannot cook making the same recipes as everyone else.
Cooking shows became about personalities instead of food. Which sucks, because usually if I am watching a recipe video, it's because I need to see how a step is done and not because I want to hear some made up backstory about making croissants with their grandma.
Alton Brown was great not pretentious broke it down and simplified stuff and explained the how and why of cooking. No catch phrases like a certain cook who I won't name.
I still like to watch old episodes of Keith Floyd from the 80's.....best tv chef of all time, he had exceptional food knowledge with charm & charisma on another level. Famous for always having a glass in hand and a quick wit. He inspired so many famous chefs now that grew up watching his shows. floyd4-380...05de19.jpg
Wouldn't really know. Only ever watched the ones on PBS. They were always good.
I still remember how good the Food Network was before it became nothing but reality games shows and baking championships. I remember shows like Emeril Lagasse, Barefoot Contessa, 30 Minute Meals, Iron Chef (Japanese Version), Food Jammers, Unwrapped, Jamie at Home, those were the memories of the old Food Network.
I started watching the Cooking Channel when Food Network started airing shows about restaurants, food trucks and game shows. Then Guy Fieri took over the channel which killed it for me. Now I can't even watch the Cooking Channel because of the same reasons.

Picks up an onion: "One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time."

The housing market.
I honestly think there should be laws about owning multiple properties. There's a housing shortage in the UK, at least, and you have landlords buying up all the properties and charging extortionate rent, pricing out first time buyers who are subsequently locked into the extortionate renting model. Not to mention all the fricking AirBnBs! As a millennial, if you don't have help/inheritance from your older relatives it's nigh on impossible to get onto the property ladder in some areas.
Personally, I think the bigger issue is second homes. At least a landlord buying properties intends to rent them out long-term, so is providing homes. Worse when it's people who bought houses cheap in the 60s and 70s and sold them in the booms, now buying holiday homes. Quickly drives up prices in desirable areas to where locals can no longer afford it, which pushes them into surrounding areas, causing their prices to increase and starting a domino effect. Then the desirable places become dead zones, where houses are empty most of the time and the local businesses end up dying.
Load More Replies...Trust me, America has this problem for all the same reasons that UK and EU do.
Real estate investors are buying up affordable homes and hording them as expensive rental properties. You can't buy it, but you can rent it for two grand a month..
Rich people buying real estate is one way to ensure the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
We live in Oregon (US) near the University. It was actually cheaper for us to buy a house than to find one to rent. But even that was a challenge as the options were pretty slim. I wanted one level with a garage, we ended up in a condo with 21 stairs (plus 6 to get to the front door) and a carport.

Ah yes, the fact that I haven't been through several more of these makes my point invalid, of course. Just one isn't enough, silly me. I've been a legal adult for longer than I haven't and I still can't afford to own a place to live ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's not the loans that are the problem, it's supply and demand. Meanwhile some chap in his 60s who owns ten different properties charges me more per month than my friends pay on their mortgage. Houses that were £35k in 1993 now cost £350k, yet wages haven't increased at even near the same rate. Nurses, teachers, train drivers, postal workers are all striking because they can't afford to live with inflation hitting 11% and their wages staying the same. Public sector full-time workers are going to food banks to feed their families, and charities have had to start offering "warm, safe places" for people to go when they can't afford to heat their homes in sub-zero temperatures. But, hey, I wasn't alive for the Winter of Discontent, so what do I know?

I used to love to fly, now will spend 2 days driving somewhere, not for fear of flying, or the security that has to be done today, but how the airlines treat their passengers. It's like they (the companies) are doing us a favor for allowing us to ride with them very uncomfortably.
And flights that included all of those things cost more. With inflation, the cost of a ticket then is close to the cost of business class now.
Lol probably GenX. Flying with my kids was a lot like this... uncrowned, quiet. Smoking in the plane sucked, tho.
Load More Replies...Just a bunch more reasons to drive instead!
Load More Replies...You get nickel & dimed for everything now because ticket prices are lower. That doesn't bother me. What *does* bother me is that you can no longer buy good service, because it's all about quantity not quality.
“The global airline industry is set to return to profitability again next year following a near-three year downturn, an industry body said Tuesday. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said it expects the industry to post a "small" net profit of $4.7 billion in 2023, with more than 4 billion passengers set to take to the skies." So after 3 years of losing money, the industry is going to make $1.18 per passenger this year.
And you paid more too. The government protected the regional monopolies that airlines had and they charged a lot more. A regular ticket in the 70s was more expensive than a first class ticket today.
I blame us, not corporate greed. When we search for flights, we sort by price and then generally select the cheapest option. If one airline decided to offer all these perks, and their costs went up 25% a flight, their sales would tank and they’d be out of business. If we wanted that stuff, we could opt for economy plus, business class, first class… but how many of us do? We are the market, and we’ve clearly communicated to the vendors which variable to optimize for (price).

Having a dog. They’re wonderful companions, and many working dogs do great jobs at their tasks, but there are SO MANY people who have dogs and can’t be bothered to do even very basic training. And SO MANY people who are inconsiderate pricks with their dogs in public spaces — letting their unleashed dog charge others, start fights, bark uncontrollably, jump on people, s**t on the trails and not picking up after themselves.
Same with cats. People think they're low maintenance and don't bother to play with them and interact with them. They think that giving them food and water is more than enough. They also mistreat them a lot...
I agree, cats need a lot of attention and love aside from food, water and shelter. I wish whoever mistreats cats or harmless dogs would drop dead.
Load More Replies...Then don't not the pups fault it the trash humans
Load More Replies...This has always kinda been the case. I have had dogs pretty much my whole life so I know how to train them and make the behave in public and I am responsible. but I know that tons of people are not and I have seen that even as far back as the 80's. Most humans don't know how to be pet owners. Not just of dogs but of any animal.
Yes, same with cats that people let wander around outside. So... I'm an animal lover that heavily trains our dogs. People freak out that I can say things like "drop it" and my dog drops whatever they have or "kennel up" and the dog runs straight into the kennel. WTH, it's not that hard to train them.
I agree with all this. Dogs and cats are awesome but their owners can sometimes be awful. I can't take my dog for walks in my neighborhood anymore because of all the unleashed dogs. News flash: if your dog comes charging at my dog, she's going to bring a world of hurt to your world. I don't want that and you shouldn't either. Don't get me started with not picking up the sh*t. Wtf y'all?
During Covid, tons of people in my area got dogs. Rescue dogs, pet stores, puppy mills. And most of them, I’d say, had no clue how to raise, train or care for their dog. Owning a pet is a responsibility, not only to the pet themselves, but also to those that come into contact with said pet. Ill behaved pets are the owners fault and cause all sorts of issues. Kind of like raising naughty kids.
Also, any pack animal that you adopt without actually giving them a same species companion, you HAVE to give plenty of daily attention to, otherwise its cruel.
I sold off my house and moved from one neighborhood because the large number of free-roaming cats killed off *every* small critter in the area and scared the rest away permanently. No birds, frogs, fireflies, or evening visits from deer and rabbits. The vegitation faded out of existance too, because the small fauna was no longer present to distribute seeds. But we did get a lot more misquitos and midge flies, because no frogs or small fish in the ponds to eat the larvae and no birds or bats to catch them in the sky.
YouTube. I miss the days of amateur videos. Classic Smosh. Crappy, but still sent entertaining music videos of video games. Actual real reactions that didn't feel like a fake, acted out script. Now everything is about fitting in to the algorithm, likes and subscriptions, obnoxious influences. YouTube is all clean, square, corporate, and sanitized. I won't deny there is also really good content to be found as well, but it's mixed in with a lot of crap.
I used to like turning on Youtube for when I only wanted to watch something for a few minutes. Now it seems every video is bloated to ten plus minutes with ads and begging for likes and subscriptions.
If I click on a video and they start off asking people to like and subscribe, I close it... just get to the point. These days everyone knows you can like and subscribe, if they want to they will.

I'm REALLY sick and tired of hearing about some algorithm and youtubers fussing, complaining and guilting their viewers about how their videos aren't doing well enough to get noticed. Meanwhile, the videos and channels I come across are found because I was searching for something specific. Not because it just turned up in my suggestions. Although suggestions are not always bad.
Whatever else may be true, YT is definitely not sanitized...maybe camouflaged.
Not to mention that so many videos are ruined by ads stuck right in the middle of them, and you can't avoid them unless you pay extra.
On YouTube I learned how to drop a tree with a chainsaw. Also watched emergency room videos of chain saw injuries.
Yes, because I can afford watching a 1-minute ad before watching a 30-second video tutorial on basic emergency medical care.
Visiting major historical sites...
Most of them have been turned into badly maintained, super expensive tourist traps.
Add in the trash and damages tourists do, and yikes.
Stick with the locals! When it comes to traveling. We visited the Taj Mahal, wasn't all it was cracked up to be, but took a hint from a local and saw another cool building, no crowd!
Until people start posting where the locals go all over Tik Tok and Instagram. Then, next time you go there, massive crowds.😥

You're absolutely right. It's the same as people sitting in a traffic jam complaining about the amount of traffic. You're not *in* a traffic jam, you are *part of* the traffic jam!
Load More Replies...Well I wouldn't go wherever that is in the photo they haven't even finished it you can still see the crane in the background!
We find this true with restaurants. Go where the people of that culture eat, it's guaranteed to be good! Not where some tour guide is directing you to go (he may very well be getting a kickback).
And it's not just modern tourists--there's graffiti left by ancient tourists even inside the Great Pyramid.
My example: there is this prehistoric stone circle place in Scotland. I won't say which. It's off the main road. First I took the bus, then I walked there (a 50 min walk perhaps, on a dirt road along fields and woods), and spent about an hour there. During that time, about 4 or 5 buses arrived, spilling out tourists, staying for about 15 minutes each. I think that those people who really want to see the place should make an effort. Another example. In my very rural hometown, there is a tree whose bark has grown around an old crucifix, embracing the torso of a Jesus Christ figure. It's way off the beaten track, on a logging path in the middle of the woods. However, since I was little this place has become a sort of pilgrimage site. People arrive in droves, often with cars. They leave all sorts of knick knacks, teddy bears and rosaries etc. I wonder how long until someone installs escalators and charges money for them.
That many people walking all over those sights for that many years will permanently wreck it. Get to look from afar, take your pics from there rather than wander around taking selfies while wearing the stones down.
Moving out to "the country". Traffic used to be that one light that didn't cycle right, now there's backups every day because they failed to upgrade the infrastructure. Urbanites spazzing out because they heard a gunshot from the farm down the street, calling the police because they saw a coyote and "someone needs to do something about it!" All of them putting 10,000 watts worth of lighting all around their house, completely washing out the night sky. Can't forget their bored f**k trophies breaking into garages and trespassing and street racing on dark narrow country roads because there's nothing else to do here. Oh and there's been a couple murders now, before all this the last time we had one was in like the 60s.
We just retired and moved to a small rural town. Bought a fixer upper old house only to discover there is a shortage of tradesmen to hire to fix what I cannot manage myself. It takes months to get a plumber, HVAC or handyman to come out. Call the six HVAC guys in town and lucky to get one to even call you back.
You are who they are talking about. Those of us who grew up in a small town always "know a guy".

I live in a mega city and we have coyotes. They use washes to get around. There are some foxes at my apartment too.
Heh, same! My city has a population of almost 300,000 and there are coyotes everywhere. You see them trotting down the streets in neighborhoods at night. I’d never let either of my cats be outdoors kitties.

The coyotes likely have a home next to the new house you bought in the area that is next to the perimeter highway, woods and fields.
Those city folk i mentioned earlier... they had a friend visiting when I heard screaming. Looked out my door ... saw the visiting woman running in circles on their porch screaming "I'm gonna DIE! I'm gonna DIIIIE!" Well, guess I better find out what happened. Son and I amble across the street, hey what's up? She screams and points to a spot 50 feet from her elevated porch... it's a little snake. My son almost choked holding in a laugh... walked over and picked it up. That woman let out a scream that could shatter glass. Yeah, we're out. Bye. We took that poor lethargic snake back to our creek and let it go. She left the next day.

The whole point of moving to the country was mainly because it was cheaper, you could ride your golf carts, go carts, side by sides etc and now thanks to snowbirds taking over and most states catering to them instead of year round residents you can't do anything anywhere now it seems! No longer allowed to have fun. It's like they forgot what the meaning of fun is.
I literally live across the street from a shooting range. There's a quarry a few miles down too. Canons and guns all the time. I grew up here, not bothered at all, sleep like a log through canons. My friend from California screamed and started panicking when they started their daily shootings. I had to explain. I had forgotten most people think gunfire is scary.
In California, it's duck and cover. Gunfire all night and throughout day. Gang fights, initiations, drive by shootings. There were 5 murders in 2 block radius the week I left. Folks just sitting on their porch, or stopping for donuts, or walking to school. One old woman just stepped out to feed her cats. Boom. Drive by. I understand why your friend was startled. California is a terrible place.

She insisted there was something wrong with it, and they had to relocate it farther up the road. Then, there were the guys from NYC who decided to go deer hunting. I don't get festivals. You stand or sit around, listen to half decent to meh music, in the heat with no shade and spend on trinkets that wind up in a yard sale or thrift store by the next years, and eat expensive food.
When I was young we had this tradition before our cities yearly festival started. We would each get a rubber boat (anything that floated really) and just drift in a nearby lake while drinking beer. The drift took around an hour or so. Then we would go to the festival. Started out with maybe 20-30 of us for a couple of years. Then some douche bag "popular" guy took note of it. Had to turn it into some massive event with musicians playing and calling for the media to come there etc. Just turned a chill event with friends to something where you couldn't hear your own thoughts because there were so many people there. They even had to close it down after a while because some of the visitors littered too much. Left their boats and s**t in the river etc. Same thing happened in a university town not that far from us. Some students started a "festival" where we played a more relaxed form of baseball. Sign up as a team, play a tournament, first price was like a bottle of vodka or some s**t like that. Completely free of charge. We slept in tents and drank, super chill and fun thing. In comes the capitalist mind. Turns the whole thing into some commercialized shitshow where its now the world championship tournament of that casual baseball. Huge entry fees, beer tents, artists. Like f**k man. What's wrong with setting up a tent, drinking a couple of beers, playing baseball drunk and just having a good time? Noooooooo we need to capitalize on this. Made both of those things boring as hell.

Happened to us back in the 80s. We had a secluded small lake in the middle of the forest , half of it overgrown with water lillies. The locals used it to hang out, have a bbq (safely of course) and get away from the tourists. I still don't know who blabbed about it to some tourists, but 2 years later it was crowded AF, they have built a kiosk and french frie station. cut down a lot of the surrounding trees. We've never been back and it is a shame that they destroyed it.
My mother lives in a county in Indiana which has a covered bridge festival every year. A once-pristine mountain lake that was peaceful and excellent for fishing and swimming was ruined by development. As I've previously commented, the pine trees surrounding the lake have been cut down and houses built everywhere. Discharge from motorboats and runoff from development have polluted the once-pure water. The fish are gone and the air stinks of pollution instead of being lightly scented by surrounding pine trees.

It happens to all musical genres at some point, there's only so much innovation before it seems to be sleepwalking, it becomes a product to be consumed and loses it's appeal.. It moves from top of the pile to it's place with the rest of them.
There is good music out there, it just takes some digging and finding subgenres to get into and get away from the mainstream. There's way more bands out there than the ones tied to major record labels.
How about that gangster c**p that's always being blasted on transit, at the beach, in the park...NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR IT!!!!!!
The popularity of online gaming has ruined campaign based play. Story mode is now backseat to online multiplayer. The popularity of online add ons is also very annoying, because now games seem purposefully incomplete. The game sells with a short bare bones storyline, but don’t worry, you can buy “extra” story modes.
An ever smaller niche that has died a death is couch coop. My wife and I love playing together, but so many games that would be sooo good, either involve two copies of everything or are poorly implemented so the player 2 feels like a guest in the game rather than an integral part of the experience.
This! My husband and I love playing together but it's tough nowadays. It's why we own older consoles besides the newer ones lol
Load More Replies...There are still a lot of very good story driven single player games out there ! From big studios or smaller ones.
I miss old shareware games. If you like it, you bought it and supported the content creater not some mega corporation.
I rarely, if ever play online games. Whenever I play a game, I just want to escape from reality with a good narrative. It's getting a little harder for single player games to thrive in this oversaturated multiplayer/online marketspace. It's a blessing when games like GOWR or AI The Somnium Files: Nirvana Initiative came out last year.
Gambling has ruined sports...constant commercials for betting sites.
It would be like buying a board game but having to go to the store to get the rest of the pieces for it to be playable.
I made an excellent Hobbit in LOTRO. Her motto was Always brush your feet before you leave the house. She was a tailor, and made (imaginary) foot toupees for non-hobbits. She ran a guild where there was no push to level up or get the best loot. We mostly concentrated on the best ale. Many people with high level characters made secondary ones for just hanging out with us. It was fun and relaxing.
F**k multiplayer, for real. As someone who's autistic I'm glad for Genshin Impac solo mode and wish WoW had it too. Yeah it was nice the few times you meet a helpful stranger or can be the helpful stranger yourself in open world but raid and dungeon content seem to be filled by people that want you to be a machine and do everything perfect from the first time or else they will make you feel like killing yourself for being a failure.
Many of us game to *get away* from a**holes at the end of the day, but more and more, we're getting corraled into only having multiplayer games as options. I rarely see any good single player games being made anymore, and even these are getting infected with "in app purchase" blight.
Covid ruined the National and state parks…too many a******s not respecting the land (leaving trash tagging rocks with graffiti)and crowding the trails.
And the park strangers who insist of listening to music or podcast on loudspeaker or talking in their phone without head set.
Too many idiots domestic and foreign visit Yellowstone thinking it's a freaking zoo.
COVID was a shitshow, no question. But I'm struggling to make the connection here.
Right! It wasn't Covid that ruined those places. It was the a*****e people.

Farmers markets. Now they’re full of random people selling really weird s**t and try to hold you captive almost and crazy people doing “shows” as they make them. I just wanna buy my things in peace without being harassed. Or buy good coffee without people there for the “ aesthetic”
I remember a few years ago I visited a farmers' market where an older gentleman, maybe around 70, sold pickled veggies in jars. He had cut the carrots and cucumbers right against the glass into cute shapes, and made up little stories about them for the buyers- there were little bears with carrot slice heads and cauliflower bodies, "maidens" with big, poofy, cucumber-skin skirts... I miss those kinds of sellers so, so much. The older people just selling things they made for fun, mostly to make room in their homes for more.
I live for our local couple's first farmers' market sale. Homemade ketchup, pickles, salsa, and fresh veggies picked that morning. First tomato sandwich of the year is an indescribable treat.

I don't like going to FM's because you have to engage with the seller. Like, yes, I'm close enough to your booth to hear you call me over, OH CRUD you saw me looking in that general direction now I have to be polite and have a conversation with you and get a soft sales pitch. Oh no! Even worse, you have switched to high pressure sales pitch! GaH! I don't want any of this, I have to leave before my civility runs out and I make a bad comment about your poorly made trashy plastic jewelry. Where are the dang fruit, free range eggs, and seasonal veggie booths!
Some of them are SO pushy. Please just let me look in peace. They’ll hound you and not leave you alone.

The food was reasonable now it is all organic or someone's home business and the prices are outrageous. I don't have anything against them they have taken over and I can no longer get reasonably price fresh produce.
I used to love the West Seattle Farmer's Market, they were all members of a co-op. Best flowers and veggies! Sure homemade soap is cool, but then everybody who thought their hobbies were "art" and worth something starting opening booths and the whole thing went to sh*t. Seriously? Who puts knitted cozies on their toilet paper rolls?
Burning Man. The old guard of the old hippies of yore are long gone. It's over run by hedge fund college kids and raver frat kids.
My tree hugging tie dye wearing, pot smoking, nicotine vaping, classic rock listening, Colbert watching hippie liberal heart is sad and heavy now. Where have all the flower children gone…
We're still here. Tie dye, tapestries, plants, music, and long hair... but I don't iron it anymore.

There was and has always been only ONE Woodstock.
I fully believe the people at Woodstock 1999 ruined Woodstock.

Driving to work early. I used to do it, but now it's the same as morning Rush hour.
Same with driving on back roads. They used to be pretty much empty, and a shorter and way more pleasant drive. Now it seems everyone has found them, and they’re just as s****y a drive as the highways and main roads.
Gave up driving to become a pedestrian. Instead of spending $400/mo on a car, gas, and insurance, I spend an extra $200/mo on an apartment a half hour walk from work in downtown Montreal. Less stress, better health, and I'm never ever stuck in traffic. Adjusting my life to fit took effort, but I'm very glad I was able to make it work for me.
I use MARTA (public transit in Atlanta). I have to get up earlier, and my commute is bus-train-bus - but I can relax and read, and let the bus driver worry about the bleeping traffic. Also, no traffic worries when on the train - as long as the dang thing works!

Adblock.
Now every website has a warning. It used to be a rare sight.
So, it's not the ad blockers that got worse, it's the websites. Don't use websites that block you for using ad and script blockers.
I don't even have an ad-blocker. Chrome now does it automatically for some ad services. And BP keeps asking me to whitelist. I HAVE no whitelist. It doesn't exist.
Came here to say this. BP makes me scream with rage at it sometimes.

Get the plugin Admiral Sucks. Admiral is the leader in anti-adblock (even THIS SITE uses them). Admiral Sucks banishes the popups.
I think there's nothing wrong with that. Either the site is offered free like e.g. Wikipedia. Or it's paid by a subscription. Or it's paid by advertising. I dislike advertising because it collects too much private info, but each to their own. Give me choices.
Even on paid sites they're still serving adds and collecting your data. Have you ever looked at the expiry on some trackers buried in the cookies? a site i click on by accident scrolling through fb has no right to follow me for 5 years.

Miss the days when folks would go out in the desert and fly remote control airplanes. Amazing to hang out and watch these five foot planes doing aeronautics. No it’s all drones. Anyone fly remote control planes anymore?
I live in a airport city. I wouldn't be able to fly one if I had one. But I do want one because then I could take some seriously great pictures from way up high. Jonna Jansen films some parts of her videos with a drone in the wilderness of northern Sweden.
Undergraduate degrees. We’re experiencing a strange educational inflation, where most jobs now require some form of higher education that previously didn’t. I’m not suggesting education is necessarily a bad thing by any means, but it certainty drives a greater division between those that do and don’t go. It’s used to be a 30/70 spilt and now it is 80/20 as to the percentage of people that go and those that don’t, a striking difference.
Being a musician. Oh, you have a computer? Guess you're an "artist" now. Don't worry if you can't sing that's why autotune exists.
Apple picking. Orchards used to involve parking on a dirt lot, climbing trees to get the best fruit, and paying per bag. Visiting a farm. That’s it. Now there’s ADMISSION, paid parking, hay rides, food stands, live music, photo taking areas, etc. Feels like a tourist trap. Because it is.
Another thing I find ridiculous is when there's a food truck fair, and there's an admission fee. It's like, we're already going to pay a fortune for the plate of food we buy, and on top of that, pay admission?! F**k off.
And the trucks are all paying a huge fee to be there.

I do like that more stores have "black Friday" savings for a week or 2 before AND have offerings on line.
When I worked retail in the 80's, we called it "Black Friday" because it was a nightmare. You couldn't get out of the parking lot because of the traffic on the road. One positive thing, the boss at one store I worked at would always get a huge deli tray and everyone would bring a dish to pass, so we ate really well!
There was a fish sauce that Romans used to eat. No one is sure what the recipe was precisely, but accounts say it was delicious. Even if we had the complete recipe, we would never be able to make it. The Romans ate so much of it that the fish species they made it from went extinct.
As "Garum" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garum) actually was made from rotten fish intestines, I think I would pass anyway... But they also managed to get the Silphium plant extinct. The plant was used primarily for birth control in roman times. Obviously the romans had a huge need for this, as they eradicated the plant completely.
You used to be one of only a few people around bidding on storage lockers. It used to be a fun hobby I gave up on because it became too popular and people are grossly overpaying for the lockers which is often time just paying to make a dump run for someone.

Now it’s just kind of goofy
Not to mention holding everyone else up just to take a stupid posed picture to upload. Some people actually live there and have to get to work, and you’re holding them up, a******s.
The house flipping trend has certainly not helped home affordability. It's good to make an junk house habitable again, it's not good to turn a $220k house into a $350k house.
I would never buy a flipped house, the bottom line is profit and they do everything as cheaply as possible. When I was looking for a house it was obvious that a house was flipped as soon as we started walking around,. Buy a fixer up for cheap and do it yourself, that way you control the work done.
In the UK there is an actual TV program called Homes under the hammer which is all about flipping houses.
There are a few of those in the USA, too. I'm sure it has provided some home improvement inspiration, but it's made the flipping problem worse.

The excessive wait time could be irritating, but on the other hand, take the time to bond with your family or whoever is in your party.
We had an amazing Halloween house in our small town, walking distance from my place. Every year the family who owned it would bring in Hollywood level props and lighting and 10 or so actors in full regalia to replicate a Pirates of the Caribbean scene all around the property. The Jack Sparrow was a dead ringer for Johnny Depp. Every kid would get a bag full of real candy, not the mini Halloween stuff. Unfortunately people started coming from other towns and it turned into a mob scene to the point that cops had to direct traffic and they shut it down.
The beach resort I live close to used to be pretty much just vacationers from within my state. We’re not southern enough to be warm year round, so the busy season is mid-May to end of September (lots of people don’t want to be there until after the kids go back to school, plus it’s not as hot and the ocean water is still warm). 50-60 years ago, kids who just graduated high school or college would spend the week after graduation there. We call them “Junebugs”. One week for high school and one for college (they graduated different weeks), and only kids from the local or in-state schools. Then word got out, and now kids from schools in all the surrounding states started coming down, and their schools graduate different weeks than ours (some states get heavier snow than we do), so now Junebug season isn’t just one or two weeks, it runs from the end of May all the way through the end of June. The kids got to be so rude, obnoxious, drunk, wasted (and not laid back and happy drunk or wasted, either, but dangerously and violently drunk and wasted), and so destructive to people’s property that the local police force has to hire a load of summer cops to handle the amount of calls they get. Basically double their year round number of officers. There have also been murders and sexual assaults resulting from unsupervised 18-22 year olds, who are just not old enough to recognize when a situation is going bad and it’s time to leave before it gets worse, and not authoritative enough to very loudly nd publicly tell someone to f*****g leave them alone. Throw in raging hormones and a lack of critical thinking skills, and you get the picture. It is a f*****g mess, and drives the family vacationers away. Oh, and the f*****g entitled parents of the f*****g entitled kids! “Oh, MY honor student wouldn’t do that!” Well sir, they took Polaroids of everything they did, if you’d like us to send you copies (yeah, you know damned well that hefty check for the damages their “honor student” did would be overnighted! Still wonder if the parents ever made their “honor students” pay them back as a consequence. Probably not. Sadly). Sorry for the F-bombs. I used to both live and work IN the resort. Off season was nice and quiet. In season was a f*****g nightmare. When I changed jobs and moved way outside the resort, I swear it was like getting out of jail. Summer months, summer holidays, and summer weekends aren’t the pain in the a*s they are at the beach. And it is QUIET out here in the boonies!
Everything that has to do with true Crime. Some years ago it was not "popular" at all and you had to search for any documentary and/or website. Now there are extra TV Channels, Podcasts, Magazines, everything and everyone is "an expert".
Must disagree on this one. I love that’s there’s so much True Crime stuff around. There’s nothing better on a wet Sunday than donning loose fitting pants, thick socks and curling up on the sofa with the dog/s and a whiskey or 3 and binge watching serial killers! 😀
I’ve read true crime books and watched true crime documentaries for decades now. Problem is, everybody got on the bandwagon, and there’s now so much c**p out there and very few well made Doc’s and well written books, you have to be careful when choosing what to watch and read, or you’re going to waste money and time on them.
And bunch of them are sort of opinion pieces where they try to steer the narrative..
Load More Replies...Yeah I’m gonna differ on this. Been watching and reading true crime for years and years. Started with Truman Capote’s novels to watching Dateline. Fascinating to see how their sociopathic minds work, appeals to me regarding the psychology of criminal behavior. True Crime has always been around. Check out Mr Ballin on YouTube, excellent story teller.
I disagree with what it's written here, but the huge popularity had indeed a bad influence. The channels try to produce so much true crime they're hurting the families and friends of the victims, often spread false claims and use the stories of the victims without permission or paying their relatives a part of their winnings. They're exploiting the pain of those people and hurt them further. That's why I avoid everything to do with true crime nowadays.
I would disagree on this one. Streaming platforms didn't used to have as much true crime in the past, and you didn't have dedicated channels to it, however true crime books, magazines, newspaper stories and TV shows have always been hugely popular. Look at the huge amount of material that was created about people like Manson or the OJ case
Yeah, I can't remember the name of it but there was some sort of show that my grandma liked to watch in the 90s that would be considered True Crime. She liked anything that could be a murder mystery.

It's fanfiction. Sorry, I guarantee it's never going to be a 100% wholesome or sfw... that's literally the point. Plus, it is fabulous to see minors suddenly invading established Fandom spaces and yelling weird regurgitated Christian purity slogans and censorship arguments straight out of the 1980s and the 1960s. And they are SHOCKED when you point this out and show them sources from those times saying the exact same things. Like sweetheart, you're literally quoting stuff from the anti dungeons and dragons satanic panic days...
I'm a fanfic writer from back in the day when we first coined the Citrus Scale! When we had to bring it back because of Tumblr banning NSFW we were all stunned, but we knew how to work things safely out. I'll tell you, though, I've had my life threatened, accounts tampered with (kids trying to guess my pw), and a lot more just because they don't like what I write. Newsflash - DON'T READ IT THEN. That said I'm on Ao3 and still going lol
Yeah... it's not just the minors spewing the regurgitation and thinking they're "sooo smart and sooo wise and soooo woke" You look at what they bleat about and complain about - and realize they quite literally stand for nothing. Their entire argument is to find 'everyone wrong' in some way. That's it. The only things they deem as 'correct' or 'ethically upright' flit, flicker and change with the 'social trend of the second'.
Nurse practitioners. It was meant for experienced nurses with decades of experience in one field to act as physician extenders. Now a bunch of 21yr olds recently graduated with a BScN directly go into part-time online NP schools and then go to become dangerous clinicians and prescribers that push for independent practice when they have a fraction of the supervised clinical experience and rigour that MD/DO physicians do.
When I herniated my lower disk the back clinic doctor was booked solid so I had to see a NP. She told me there was no surgery that could deal with my problem. I would just have to live with crippling pain the rest of my life. So I went to a neurosurgeon who did a laminectomy. Just a routine operation for him.
1. I've seen quite a few NPs and they were great. 2. NPs have all charts reviewed by MDs and cannot practice alone. 3. (and most importantly) there's a HUGE shortage of medical professionals so I'll take an NP over waiting 4 weeks for my GP/MD. 4. Just like a MD, they are still human and make mistakes/wrong diagnosis. I'm not a NP- but I support all medical professionals!
I see a Psych NP and she's the best. I've been with her since she had dark hair and now it's white. She just works one day a week at this point and only kept a handful of patients, but thankfully she kept me.
I've mentioned this before but in the early 2000s I got into record collecting. I got a record player from Salvation Army for like $5, and people would just give you records. I would buy boxes of records for $2-3 from garage sales. If every single record in there sucked a*s, who cares - I was out $2 and I usually got a milk crate out of the deal! I found so much great music that I probably would have never come across otherwise, and part of the joy for me was exactly that - finding new music to listen to. Now the same things that I picked out of someone's garbage are $30 at a picked over, overorganized store and god forbid you want to get a recent release - the 150 gram audiophile on super cotton candy swirl double album deluxe of whatever is the flavor of today will run you $60 and you better preorder so it can arrive at your door six months later than it was scheduled to in a package that isn't fit to transport styrofoam and left in a puddle and f****n A I hate my post office driver.
Collecting of anything that becomes popular (Comic books, Sports cards etc). The whole grading of items that turn a hobby more into an investment then what it should be, a hobby. Having anything and everything graded by PSA is getting out of hand. You say you have a sealed Back to the Future VHS ? Well send it in to be graded, they're grading a box.
That’s because the true collectors get priced out of their hobby by people who are merely in it for an investment. Same goes for art collecting. If you’re not a billionaire, you can forget buying any original—-unless you’re lucky enough to buy really early works from an artist who later become famous.

It's fun to sing that part but... it's literally a creepy song (underage girl).
Financial news. It used to be non-biased and actually contain information and ideas. They genuinely wanted the readers go make money if it worked. For example, "Here's a good company that if you have some extra cash you should buy. It has these great qualities and here's the history of how it started and what it can do". Now its b******t like 'Motely Fool' and 'Bazinga' that are owned by mega-corporations that lead sheep to slaughter. The mega corps buy a company on mass, causing a stock price increase. Then they release an article about why you should buy it, which causes slight increases in price. Because of said increases, they short it (bet against where they profit if the price decreases). Then, they sell their entire stake at a small % gain and plummet the price to cash out on the short options. Retail investors get screwed because of the 'News'
I gave up on Motley Fool years ago. I paid attention to them for a while, then slowly realized they were spewing B.S. Or maybe they started out honest and then became a B.S. factory.

Disney world toy story characters dropping to the ground if someone yelled Andy’s coming. It used to be a little known secret but it went viral and way too many people started yelling it out constantly that the actors had to just stop doing it
They’re toys. Andy can’t know they come alive when no one’s around. It would mess with his head—-and nobody would believe him anyway, which would mess with his head even more. So in a way, the toys are protecting Andy from becoming known as a weird and/or overly imaginative and/or mentally off balance kid, because that could really f**k up his childhood and mark him for the rest of his life.

Grocery couponing. Apparently it only used to be done by a relatively small number of people, which is why they were able to get major discounts. But once word of it spread, grocery chains took them away.
Can’t find decent coupons for stuff people actually buy anymore. With prices of every little thing skyrocketing, every little bit of a discount would help. A buck saved us still a buck saved, and does add up over time. One per week is $52 per year.
Grocery coupons years ago were good for a year before they expired too, now it’s 90 days. Lots of stores used to do double or triple coupons not anymore though but shows that overpopularized couponing like Extreme Cheapskates just ruined it for the rest of us. They were basically showing others how to get $100 worth of groceries for for some absurdly low price like $7. Like we know those secrets but don’t tell the damn manufacturers we know this s**t. Photographers
When digital cameras first got popular in the mid-2000'a it was like an MLM. All your obscure friends and relatives you haven't seen or spoken to in forever are suddenly "professional photographers" and start hitting you up out of nowhere for photo sessions because they badly needed to pay for the 1 class they took, their camera, and the MacBook they bought. It got really weird for a while.
Some people buy a DSLR and a lens, leave the camera on Auto, and suddenly they're a "photographer" 🙄
Watching anime. I’m convinced anime got so unbelievably weeby and adding extra fan service because it got more popular which is my conspiracy theory as to why we don’t really get shows like yu yu hakusho, samurai champloo, etc
Anime has always been this way. Take a look at Crunchyroll, you'll see plenty of very *old* anime that has tons of fanservice. If you look through, however, you'll find the hidden gems, even now.
I don't think new anime has more fanservice than older... maybe it depends on what anime you watch.
Yup, i use to love it, shows like GITS for instances where amazing, today.... Its just Trash, kids and boobs everywhere.
Looking like Kim Kardashian
Used to just be known as having a huge a*s, and being an out of proportion caricature like that wasn’t in fashion. Hell, SNL did a whole series of skits about a disproportionately big-assed family back in the mid-to-late seventies (the original cast, if memory serves). Now, while being naturally and proportionately curvy is actually a good thing—-ridiculous fashion hawking x-ray thin as the only acceptable body type, whether you’re naturally thin or not, has done more damage to people’s health than anything else—-it’s unfortunately been taken to a ludicrous extreme, and monetized, starting with a sex tape (when tf did that become not only acceptable but also a career launcher—-and not for a career in porn? People used to not overshare as much about their lives, and never their sex lives. Some things really should stay private), by a rich girl copycatting her ex-best friend, then getting her own reality show out of it. And don’t get me started on the damage to people’s behavior that’s been done by “reality” shows making normally nice people exhibit faked extreme and antisocial behavior for nothing but shock value and ratings, without realizing that the less adept at critical thinking are going to ape that behavior. As a result, people have become coarse, rude, and prone to knee jerk violent reactions, because they think it’s acceptable—-because they saw it on TV!—-and are unable to differentiate between fantasy and reality. Cripes.

Yup. Aspen used to be cool 40 some odd years ago, now it’s a millionaire’s playground. Same with Vale.

Geek culture. Back in the day, being into stuff like anime, Star Wars, & Star Trek used to be its own subculture. Now all of a sudden being into geek culture is cool and has come out with a lot of s****y stuff lately.
Gatekeeping is never a good look. There is so much quality content around now, but because it's no longer niche enough for the Comic Book Guy types, they complain.
I know. I’ve been into Star Trek since I watched reruns of the original show. Now it’s everybody’s into, not just the geeks. It’s mainstream now. And with the show Stranger Things the game Dungeons and Dragons is becoming uber popular. People spend bank of rare pieces and special dice. Fourty years ago, only the geeky kids played it outside during recess. Now the wannabes are like making mainstream. Cool I guess. But when we were growing up during the “Satanic Panic”, this game was banned in a lot of schools. I remember this. Kids trying to keep it secret from parents that they were just playing D&D not joining some weird cult ! Lol
When a Marvel or Star Wars movie can make over a billion dollars worldwide at the box office, i would say that is pretty mainstream.
Sneakers. I miss the days of walking into footlocker and getting just about any pair. Only a handful of unobtainable ones. For the longest time people would tell me I don’t understand why you like sneakers so much. Now those same people are “into” sneakers. I hope this fad dies quick and we get back to a small community that actually likes them and not this trendy/reseller c**p we have now.
Liking sneakers was once obscure? When? Back in the late 80s everyone was into LA Gears. Those are technically sneakers.
Z-library. Could read so many books before dumb tiktokers made it go viral and had it shut down
Games, sometimes they have a wave of new players and it brings a*seholes which wreck the game for everyone else. For example Sea of Thieves, i can't play the game anymore without getting raided by other players regardless if i have loot, and even when i try to play a story adventure i can't complete it coz of tw*tty players.
this happened with splatoon 3. at launch it was a bunch of actually skilled players playing for fun, now its all small children who got the game for christmas.
Toss up between the Tik Tok Beyoncé dance thing or Wednesday prom dance re-enactments
That seems weird to me. How does one get gratification off of the opinion of a stranger?

In my dorm room, there was a vending machine that, with just the perfect push of the button, would dispense two sprites. For a few of us, it lasted around 6 months. Then they fixed the machine after one loose lip led to another. Open lips snatch sips.
To be fair sounds like they were in an American college so they were already being ripped off.
Load More Replies...More likely, the amount of money in the machine didn't tally for the amount of cans removed so they sent someone out to look at it. Vending machines don't exist in a void, they are a business owned by someone who will be counting the coins and then wondering why their accounts aren't adding up.
Hey I actually did this in my dorm. My dad had a key from where he worked that was a universal key for vending machines. He gave it to me since he knew I couldn’t afford much. On the weekends, I would take three Mountain Dews and three Reese’s peanut cups or three Milky Way dark chocolate bars. Yes it was stealing, yes it was wrong. But I have never done anything like that before or since in my life. What I did do this was probably wrong, when I left uni, I gave the key to my roommate. She was a struggling student too and forever grateful. I never cleaned out the vending machines and I didn’t do it ALL the time. But I confessed my sins to my pandas, so my conscience is clean now ! Lol
I think pretty much everyone could do this if they could. Props to you for not getting caught!
Load More Replies...Script writing is ruined by sheer amount of everyone who touches a pen today can write for big movies. It is a hunt if you want to watch a good movie and it is mainly a problem with the script. It is inflated. And from the number of movies that come out too, you basically habe no time or spafe to discover the golden script in pile of dogshit.
"habe no time or spafe" - Well thankfully it doesn't look like the contributor will be adding to the pile of people who think they can write :)
I don't think that issue based on the writers but the studio bosses who want maximum profit at no risc.
Im fine with people trying to write new stuff, but I hate this current climate where big studio writers are so egotistical and have some kind of agenda that they ruin pretty much any existing material they are supposed to adapt for movie/series.. why do they think they can do better that the already loved source material, go write your own stuff and dont butcher the existing ones.
Whatever the hot new tourism spot is For example my grandfather used to spend weekends in Nashville when it was a more down to earth low key town Now it’s one of the hottest travel destinations and is just swamped everywhere
So basically most of the complaints about things being ruined is because the population of the world has increased and decent places to live are overcrowded. Yet half of the USA's population is against providing easy access to birth control, and promotes having more children on the planet.
I think Nashville could be cool BUT for sure, it is WAY too crowded to enjoy a visit.
Made lakeside cabins. A few cabins is peaceful and fun. Filling the lakeside with cabins makes it loud and like being in town. (Disclaimer, I don’t own a cabin) *this is me just remembering someone else saying this*
Toronto Globe & Mail literary quiz. 100 obscure literary questions. Winners got G&M merch. Obscure enough that you had to go to the library, the bookstore and antivirus your computer from all the little websites you had to search to find the answers. I was one of the winners once. The next year I shared answers with a couple of people who shared theirs with me. Little did we know where we shared them was searchable by Google. The G&M got overwhelmed with right answers and promptly retired the contest.

The problem is we still have the mentality that people (especially women) should want to be parents. I've told people I like kids in small doses, but wouldn't want one full time and the response was "it will be different if it's your own kid." Like, that's not a good reason to have a kid, especially because it isn't always true. Although, I do think if people are going to be hiking and stuff, they should be considerate of others. Don't blast your speaker near other people and pick up your dang trash. There's no janitor in the woods cleaning up after you.

I honestly think a lot of the issue has more to do with overpopulation. Of course people want to move out to "the country" there's no room in the cities. I do agree with the farmers markets and craft shows. I went for a couple years to the local ones (which are small anyway) and had fun, but this last year over half the stalls were mlms or political parties. Im pretty disgusted with how much our local people ruined things with their campaign strategies. I'll never go to another fair on election year again. All that said, we did have some pretty fun events last summer that I'm hoping will be around this year too.
