Protests have erupted all over the US over the death of George Floyd. Cities are imposing curfews and states are activating National Guard members to calm down the demonstrators but they continue to express pain and anger with chants, signs and outbreaks of violence.

And while many questions, like what's going to happen to the police officers involved in the incident, are still unanswered, one thing is certain: the demands for justice and an end to police brutality against African Americans have united the entire country and people of all backgrounds are taking a knee together.

This one is touching, seriously. This police officer is actually armed. And yet, there is this mutual trust and care for one another. Totally kills all stereotypes both about the protesters and the police.

Based on accounts from witnesses, video footage, and official statements, here's what the public knows about Mr. Floyd's death so far.

Everything began with a report of a fake $20 bill. A report was made on the evening of the 25th of May, when Mr. Floyd bought a pack of cigarettes from a grocery store. The store employee thought the $20 bill Mr. Floyd paid with was counterfeit and reported it to police.

Mr. Floyd had been living in Minneapolis for several years after. He had recently been working as a bouncer but just like so many other Americans became unemployed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mr. Floyd was a regular at Cup Foods, the grocery store where he tried to buy the cigarettes. Mike Abumayyaleh, the owner of the store, told NBC that Mr. Floyd was a friendly face and a pleasant customer who never caused any trouble. But Mr. Abumayyaleh wasn't working that day.

reddit.com Report

At around 20:08, two police officers arrived at the scene. Mr. Floyd was sitting in a car parked around the corner with two other people.

After approaching them, one of the officers, Thomas Lane, pulled out his gun and ordered Mr. Floyd to show his hands. In an account of the incident, prosecutors didn't explain why Mr. Lane thought it necessary to draw his gun.

According to the prosecutors, Mr. Lane "put his hands on Mr. Floyd, and pulled him out of the car". Then Mr. Floyd began actively resisting handcuffs.

Once handcuffed, however, Mr. Floyd became compliant and Mr. Lane explained that he was being arrested for "passing counterfeit currency".

But when officers tried to put Mr. Floyd in their squad car, a struggle erupted.

At around 20:14, Mr. Floyd "stiffened up, fell to the ground, and told the officers he was claustrophobic", a transcript released by authorities explained.

Mr. Chauvin arrived at the scene. He and other officers were involved in further attempts to get Mr. Floyd in the police car.

reddit.com Report

At 20:19, Mr. Chauvin pulled Mr. Floyd out of the passenger side, causing the man to fall to the ground.

As he lay there, face down, still in handcuffs, witnesses started to film Mr. Floyd. He appeared to be in a distressed state. These moments, captured on multiple mobile phones and shared widely on social media, were Mr. Floyd's last.

As officers were restraining Mr. Floyd, Mr. Chauvin placed his left knee between his head and neck.

"I can't breathe," Mr. Floyd said repeated, pleading for his mother and begging "please, please, please".

Mr. Chauvin kept his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

About 6 minutes into that period, Mr. Floyd became non-responsive. It was approximately then when Mr. Floyd fell silent and bystanders urged the officers to check his pulse.

One of the other officers, JA Kueng, did exactly that and said he "couldn't find one". But the officers did not move.

At 20:27, Mr. Chauvin removed his knee from Mr. Floyd's neck. He was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center in an ambulance and was pronounced dead around an hour later.

reddit.com Report

On Friday, Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman charged Mr. Chauvin with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. His bail has been set at $500,000.

Mr. Floyd's family and their attorney, Benjamin Crump, are upset that Mr. Chauvin wasn't charged with a more serious offense.

"We expected a first-degree murder charge. We want a first-degree murder charge. And we want to see the other officers arrested," Crump and the family said in a statement. "We call on authorities to revise the charges to reflect the true culpability of this officer."

If convicted of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, Mr. Chauvin would be facing up to 25 years in prison on the first charge and up to 10 years on the second.

Mr. Freeman said charges against the other three officers are likely.

I saw these images circulating on social media earlier this morning and they are truly moving. These are the images that the news rarely shows us and likely doesn't want us to see. I will never ever be able to understand the level of sadness, anger, hurt, and frustration felt by the black community, but I'm so happy to see images like these of communities of all skin tones, sexual orientations, ages, and religions band together to foster change.

This is nice, but cops need to do more. Someone said that even if there are 1000 good cops and 10 bad cops, if the 1000 good cops don't make sure the 10 bad cops are brought to justice, then there are 1010 bad cops.

Most cops are just people with no authority. Doing this is not just telling the protesters how they feel, they also show their bosses what they stand for. This is the 990 good cops judging the bad cops.

The United States (and other parts of the world) truly needs to acknowledge its years of racial intolerance. I understand that there are some truly good cops out there who speak against racism. However, it saddens and sickens me that situations like the brutal murder of George Floyd are going to keep on happening if governments and the police force as a whole don't acknowledge that something desperately needs to be done. I don't have the answers, but there needs to be racial bias training, background checks, cultural acceptance training, etc. Racism is taught and will continue to exist if we don't discuss that these issues exist.

we do not need to judge....anyone... there is a GOD above , remember? THOU SHALL NOT JUDGE.... it is for our own good, can you not SEE? Even a BLINDMAN can see what judging your brother or sister does for the world we all live in... Why not protesting for the stupid wars Americans authorized through their SILENCE all over the planet?? Is this the way you treat your brothers and sisters from Syria...? Iran? Irak? Vietnam? ... Can you not see that, for the first time in your bloody history as a nation, you finally have the right president that does not arrange war after war after war... for the first time in your history as a nation you have a chance to wise up... cause genocide is never God's promise to Man....and neither is raping , killing and consuming the blood and flesh of little babies.... OMG, there is a war as we speak, as the EVIL is wiped out from the face of the Earth... GOD bless you all, awaken people, my brothers who will no longer be silent...

This is a step in the right direction.. people.. don’t hate! Be celebratory and use the platform to rise up. A protest is to be seen, heard, and incite change. This picture shows change... MUch more than just “ nice”. Give credit where credit is due and more people will support instead of negativity which turns people away from the cause.

This is my town's police chief and I can tell you that this isn't an attitude he just adopted because people are protesting. He's been fostering an inclusive, anti-racist policy for years and he has no problem getting rid of officers who abuse their power. I've lived here my whole life and can remember 15 or 20 years ago there were a few horrible cops in the department. They're all gone now. The way this chief manages his department leaves no room for brutality, harrassment or racism. He has been very vocal and action oriented in regards to being transparent and very pro #BLM. He has always spoken up when reports come out of a black person being murdered by the police. He is well respected and liked by the community he serves. Well....except for the actual criminals. I love that this photo has gone national, but it was not suprising to everyone who knows him. I wish every city in this country had a Chief like we do in Santa Cruz.

It’s good the chief of police is setting an example. I wonder what things are like behind the scenes though. I have read and watched reports of how the “brotherhood of blue” bullies the good police into silence or pushes them out of the job.

With everything going on in the world right now, the "good cops" don't need this kind of c**p. There is a problem and protesting is right but the ones who are using it as a reason to destroy and disrupt are not from the same group. I see them as political minions.

I'm not quite sure why, but them kneeling feels wrong. I realize it's supposed to be in solidarity. However, it was a cop kneeling on George Floyd's neck that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Don't let one cop redefine kneeling. Kneeling has been a universal gesture of reverence and respect long before Derek Chauvin came along. He's already taken enough away, don't you think?

There is a lot of moving pieces to these riots. Just because the cops take a knee does not mean they stand with the looters. They stand with the peaceful protesters. Just like just because some idiots are looting and burning businesses does not mean every protester is there for that reason.

Honest question: obviously all people, black and white, are most likely aware of this right now. Is it encouraging or annoying of me, as a white woman, to say something supportive to any black person I encounter? I don't want to bother someone in the middle of a store or "single them out" for being black, but I also don't want to ignore the situation.
