40 Photos From Polish Social Media Profiles That Raise As Many Questions As They Provide Answers
Poland is a country in Central Europe with a history that spans over a thousand years. Its diverse territory extends from the beaches of the Baltic Sea in the north to the Sudetes and Carpathian Mountains in its south, but in order to truly understand this place, we must look at the people who live there.
Enter 'Pictures from Polish profiles.' This Facebook page collects all the colorful photos that Poles upload to their social media accounts, providing a no-filter glimpse into their everyday life. From priests and policemen to football hooligans and babcias, continue scrolling to meet the folks and see what they're up to!

What? The Polish or English word isn't used like this in my knowledge?
Load More Replies...It's probably the thing were people don't understand the English, but wear the shirt because it looks cool. Like me getting frustrated at the non understandable grammar and word usage on my cousins shirt, and her having no clue what it says.
Why it's confusing: lesbian is the word for women who are exclusively romantically attracted to women
Cool Guy. At some point he discovered what's written in English and loves the shirt more so because of it!
This is a very old joke shirt. I first saw it on Jello Biafra in the late 70's.
thats jeniuus! there is plenty of room for it, it doesnt harm anyone, its great
This is absolutely brilliant! As a Polish girl, I feel a strong sense of pride with this one!
According to Culture.pl, a website about the country run by its residents, Poles are really hospitable. "[As one] Polish saying goes: 'A guest in the house [is a] God in the house'. Hospitality plays a crucial role in Polish culture," they introduced themselves. "Poles often choose to entertain guests in their households, which on many occasions involves the preparation of a proper, home-cooked meal by the hosts. A spectacular display of Polish hospitality takes place during the Christmas and Easter celebrations when people invite numerous relatives and friends over for meals that often feature a whole array of home-made dishes."
I'm so impressed with that cuke! I have so many questions about how this all happened though- Did the cuke start growing in a ? shape, so he went and got a Riddler costume? Did he have the riddler costume from a party some years ago and see the cuke and have a 💡 moment?
Dunno. This one is photoshopped if you look closely.

Also, Polish people won't admit defeat. "Some might consider calling Poles 'indomitable' surprising, since Poland was once partitioned for over a century. Nevertheless, Poles were perceived as such, for instance, by the great Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges," the folks at Culture.pl explained. "There are a number of good reasons to share his view. Whenever Poland fell to foreign powers, Poles would rebel over and over again. Admittedly, most of our uprisings turned out to be crushing defeats, but that didn’t break our spirit ‒ we would simply prepare for the next rebellion. In the end, here we are, free and prosperous."
This reminds me of the simple times of wearing 'inappropriate' metal t-shirts to picture day.
This gave me a flashback to 1997 listening to "Breathe" on repeat.

I have to say when the department I worked at encouraged women officers to add a touch of femininity to our uniforms, I doubt they had in mind the 4” beaded earrings I wore to work the next day. I passed the Chief in the hallway, his eyes popping out of his head, I stopped as I turned the corner, just in time to head him ask “okay whose responsible for those earrings!!?!? I had to laugh, I would never wear them out in the field, too easy to get them torn out of my ears.
As the last point might suggest, Poles are also courageous. "Poland was the first nation to stand up to Nazi Germany when Hitler invaded in 1939. Shortly after this attack, Poland was also invaded by the Soviet Union and for some time battled against the two great powers at once, showing tremendous courage. During World War II, the penalty for lending assistance to Jews was death. Nevertheless Poles are the most numerous national group among the Righteous Among the Nations, people decorated by Israel’s Yad Vashem Institute for rescuing Jews from the Holocaust."
If he is a real priest and this is real holy water and he says the right words, it counts.
Maybe found on Polish social media, but the image looks like it is from USA, based on the kitchen design, plug location and the vents. No Catholic priest in Poland would ever do that.
It’s so funny she didn’t even try to move the bird she just left him waiting there
Slavic culture photos get mixed all the time, so it is possible this is from Russia or Ukraine. Hollywood movies usually portray all Slavs as Russians anyway :P
I live in Galicia (Spain, not Poland) and I do the same to control the fermentation of cider, hehehe.
I worked with some Russians shortly after the collapse of the USSR and one of them described this process and said that colloquially they called it "Waving goodbye to Gorbachev."
All of the struggles made these people really sharp. "In the 1940s, the Soviet Union imposed communism on Poland. This system led to many absurdities such as food stores having nothing but vinegar in stock. These realities forced Poles to become resourceful. For example, the so-called 'line committee' was a solution for those who needed to wait in line for a very long time. It was possible to register your place in the queue with a committee formed by a group of volunteers, and therefore leave the line without losing your spot."

But no matter what, they remain in touch with nature. "Recently, an acquaintance of mine from abroad visited Poland and was startled to discover that, during the summer, you can get wild bilberries and blueberries for a few złotys on every street corner. In his home country, wild-grown produce is a great and pricey rarity. Meanwhile, Poles will often pick their own wild-grown fruit as well as many different kinds of edible forest mushrooms. Pretty cool considering that, coming straight from mother nature, these things are as healthy as it gets."

it has some history, though :) The person on the sculpture is Marcin Najman, Polish boxer and MMA fighter known from losing every battle for last few years, being laughed at and becoming a meme. In this situation he made a fool of himself again, while he had some argument with a journalist Krzysztof Stanowski and they were supposed to meet and fight in real life. So Najman was waiting at the place (different city), journalist never came up, but recorded a viral video fooling Naiman again. This is a sculpture of Najman wearing his characteristic jacket and sport bag. Meme 2.0 ;)

Load More Replies...https://youtu.be/tqWymNLzY90 that was happening during elections so I guess it's the real reason. What more about this video - event though Poland has a lot of alcohol there was a huuuge shortage during first months of pandemic. So, some people had an idea to use alcohol confiscated from illegal manufacturing called bimber/moonshine. It had a higher alcohol voltage and was perfect for disinfection. After all, everything in Poland smelled as a moonshine so it wasn't so weird to see people trying to drink it as its was something they knew pretty well.
Had to do this in hospitals in a few countries, only with sanitizer because alcoholics were stealing them to drink. Then they'd be found dead in the toilets.
Up- or downdrafts almost guaranteed, so should dry fast.

Looks like they are having a blessing over that day's food. Some restaurants and businesses in religious areas have a prayer in the morning before production begins. One place I worked in Salt Lake City, run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had a full fifteen minute devotional complete with prayer and singing a hymn every day before we opened. It was lovely, though a little weird.
Yes, something like that, but my guess would be that it is either a benediction ceremony for a newly opened restaurant (not uncommon in Poland, even or especially large companies do it for the PR) or the owner donated to a church-run charity and held an event for that. The person to the left is holding a large "check" presumably with a sum of money written on it.

Load More Replies...Some cultural context: the cake says "2137 years". I'm pretty sure John Paul II wouldn't be turning 2137 if he was still alive today. I'm guessing it's a reference to 21:37 (a number/time considered "holy" by many people in Poland, being his time of death. In Poland many churches and towers play "Oh, Mary, Queen of Poland", one of John Paul II's favourite songs at this time every evening) and of the song "May he/she live 100 years" which is the Polish aequivalent for "Happy birthday", but sung to a different melody and with completely different lyrics (it's a completely separate song, being sung in Poland on birthdays rather than the international "Happy birthday"). Basically, my educated guess is that someone commissioned a birthday cake for John Paul II's would-be 100th birthday, and as it would be a faux-pas to wish someone to live 100 years on their 100th birthday, they are wishing him to live for 2137 years (not literally, of course, as he's already died) as a way of saying happy birthday. It's kinda sweet in its own weird overzealous way. Oh, and the rainbow symbolises God and indicates that he's up there with the Lord now, nothing LGBT here (especially nowadays in Poland you cannot have anything LGBT anywhere, sadly).
Where are you from? You seem to know some stuff about Poland, but not enough. Anyway, your educated guess is TERRIBLY wrong. He's definitely not as respected man as you might think. Basically John Paul II is considered a meme by the most of polish youth (definitely not a saint dude old folk would like him to be). Short 2137 definition from polish Slang explanation page: John Paul II died at 21:37. In slang, the phrase 2137 is used as a specific code for people making fun of the pope and the cult that surrounds him in Poland. For most believers, this hour is a symbol, an hour that they often see on a watch or in various random situations, which also became the object of mockery. One of the main reasons is not only the opposition to the Catholic faith itself, but also the controversy related to this pontificate, a thoughtless and uncritical approach to its many years of activity. (if your comment was an elaborate joke I deeply respect that tho)

Why is she wearing flip-flops with tight on? I can imagine that would be uncomfortable
Roll the potatoes in a mixture of melted butter and oil. Sprinkle with paprika and garlic powder and some salt. Bake at 350 until brown, turning once. Heaven!
To be honest, that's one of my better memories from school. I'm guessing that picture shows preparations to 'wigilia klasowa' - christmas eve celebration on last day of school before christmas holiday. It was an opportunity for a more laid back contact with classmates and faculty. In highschool we would add smuggled alcohol to that Pepsi and share it with some professors who seemed 'cool'.

Load More Replies...Little explanation: I am on the group of Polish Pictures Community. The aim is to gather pictures which are 'very Polish' in the way they look. So there are funny pictures, but also wholesome, sentimental, sad, everyday etc. They are not gathered to make fun. This is why there is a lot of pope (or The Pope, cause in Poland many people are obsessed with John Paul II), a lot of priests, a lot of Kaczynski, but also a lot of our mums and dads, a lot of shops we are doing groceries, streets we are walking. A little bit of absurd, a little bit of megalomania, a little bit of simple lives with addition of families making bigos and veggie salad all the time. This is Poland and these are pictures of it.
I found all photos endearing - a bit more text would have been nice

They are not. On polish websites we have even crazier picture compilations captioned "Russia is not a place - it's a state of mind" also not representative of russian nation either. Both share common themes - old people having fun (I consider such pics kinda wholesome), hot girls in weird situations (like that gal peeling potatoes in formal attire), some crazy drunk idiots and religious figures in the wild.

I once wanted to buy sweets in Poland. They have a huge variety of little chocolate goodness wrapped individually and you can buy as much as you want. Since I wanted to try all of them I stuffed it all into one bag, which was then getting quite big. BIG mistake. When I went to the checkout the cashier told me they all had different prices (which were not displayed) so she had to take out all of them, count them and scan eevery single code. The row behind me was getting longer and longer. I was so embarrassed and felt so sorry for the cashier... 🙈🙈🙈 But I never made that mistake again. And the chocolates were delicious. Also: polish fireworks are super loud!!!
I get it that the author/photographer wanted to show "everyday life" in Poland, but really, there's got to be more to the country than this. What about city life, and well dressed people too. They can't all be fat and badly dressed.
I now know no more about Poland than I did before wasting my time on this post.
