Plumbing is one of those things that is easy to take for granted. We normally don't notice how much of a role it plays in our daily life until it stops working.
The fact that we can simply walk up to a faucet and wash our face under warm water every time we turn the handle is all thanks to plumbers.
So let's scroll through the subreddit r/Plumbing and check out what they go through on the job to make it happen.
After all, the modern lifestyle we currently enjoy would be impossible without the knowledge and skills these professionals possess.

A few years back, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared plumbers to be one of the most important frontline health workers in the world.
With their knowledge and expertise, plumbers design systems that give us access to clean water sources. That clean water can be used for everything from practicing proper hygiene to sanitizing operating rooms.
Sustainable health is not possible without clean water.

"Fresh water is in finite supply on Earth and as the key to life is, without question, our planet’s most precious natural resource," the WHO said in a statement.
"The plumbing industry recognizes the tenuous balance mankind must maintain to guarantee its very existence and embraces efforts to ensure we are preserving every drop possible.

In the near future, plumbers are going to be as important as ever. "If we do not alter our historical approaches to water supply expansion, we will only be able to provide a fraction of the world’s water demand in the next few decades," the WHO continued.
"By 2050, the world population is estimated to increase by 3 billion people, with 100 percent of this growth expected to be concentrated in urban areas. Within 20 years, the projected demand for water will increase between 40 and 50 percent. Although it was universally agreed that the water challenges ahead of us are daunting, the good news is it is not insurmountable."

But plumbing isn't only for the collection, transportation, and dispersal of clean water. It is also used to remove liquids and waste.
Plumbers ensure that waste disposal runs in an efficient and safe manner. This makes it possible to separate your clean water from harmful contaminants.
When plumbing is done poorly, it could allow for those contaminants to leak into undesirable areas, posing a danger to anyone nearby.

Currently there are around 480,600 plumbers in the United States, but this number is expected to grow.
CareerExplorer rates plumbers with a B employability rating, meaning this career should provide good opportunities for the foreseeable future. Over the next 10 years, the US might need 81,900 plumbers. That number is based on 75,200 additional plumbers, and the retirement of 6,700 existing professionals.

While You're Here ..... Can You See Why My Dryer Isn't Drying
This is why I always check the lint trap at my in-laws when we visit. They forget.
How do they not know it is a fire hazard? How have they not had a fire from all that lint? Have they not noticed that their clothes and linens take a lot longer to dry than they used to (when there wasn't as much lint in the trap? I'm not trying to be mean by asking this, I'm just surprised. Maybe you can make a cute and helpful (but not insulting or patronizing) sign for their laundry room that reminds them to clean the lint trap
Load More Replies...When I first moved in with my now ex-wife, then girlfriend, she looked at me like I had three heads when I emptied the lint trap before every load. Apparently in her household it was common practice to let it build up like this and only empty it when it was "full". She was shocked at how quickly clothes dried when the trap is emptied regularly.
It’s because of BP that I know people don’t empty it on each run.
Load More Replies...I've seen more house fires started by dirty lent traps than most others combined. Clean them traps people!
Luckily, our dryer is close to and outside wall, and has a relatively short duct, so is easy to keep clear. But, in 21 years, I have not been able to get my husband to develop the habit of cleaning the lint trap whenever he empties the dryer, so have to go behind him and do it myself Every. Damn. Time. If I die first, I swear he’s going to run the house down with a dryer fire. (Hey, everybody needs motivation to live a long life!)
In our house, the lint trap is cleaned as soon as we take out the load. Every single time.
My next door neighbours had a house fire from a clogged dryer. They didn't know it had a filter you're supposed to clean out.
Amazing the number of people that don't know about lint traps until either this happens or they have a fire.
You should always clean the lint trap after every single time you use it. It is super common for them to catch on fire, because the lint makes the dryer overheat because there is nowhere for the heat to go. In my country the dryer is the most common electrical appliance to cause house fires.
I got an almost new dryer FREE from a woman who said it doesn't work. Took me a little while to clean the lint out. Spent the whole time I was cleaning it wondering why her house hadn't burned down.
Prime example as to why kids need to have chores. If they don't, they grow up to b this kind of helpless adult
One of the chores we had as kids was to clean the outside dryer vent. My dad had the dryer vented through a cellar window (old, old house). There was a screen across the window which we removed and cleaned, wiped down the outside of the 2 glass window panes and frame, then set the screen back in place and turned the latches. (The 3rd window pane was removed and replaced with wood with the vent running through that. This was almost at ground level.)
Load More Replies...I clean mine after every single load. My Speed Queen dryer has the lint trap fully visible. You see as soon as you open the door. Speed-Quee...t-trap.jpg
My roommate forgets from time to time. I always check before and always clean it afterwards.
Now this is dangerous. As a plumber I worked on the insurance side of things and I've come across a couple of dryer fires 🔥 It does happen. Clean your lint traps
I clean mine out almost every time, especially after washing towels and bed linens.
I have to empty mine every time. With five animals and me with long hair.
Major, major fire hazard. Please clean your lint trap. You'll be glad you did.
We always clean the lint trap after every load. Years ago our son's girlfriend was doing many loads of her laundry at our house when she first moved nearby. I heard an alarm going off in the basement and ran down to see what it was. The lint trap was so plugged the air wasn't being exhausted and the alarm on the dryer went off. I never even knew there was such an alarm on it.

Never flush anything, except toilet paper. Make sure your toilet paper breaks down in water; that's what it's supposed to do. Every decade or so a tp manufacturer comes out with a product that "won't fall apart when wet!" Do not use it. Do not flush it. Return it to the manufacturer. Or, you will be paying a plumber to snake it out for you. (Extra story: I couldn't flush t a m p o n s in my toilet because there was a big sag in the s e w e r line. $$$)
