Bored Panda reached out to Rachel Geller, a certified cat behavior specialist who agreed to share her expertise on why some cats are so into drama. Rachel explained that “cats are highly reactive to stress, even to situations that may seem minor to us.”
We may also perceive them as acting very dramatically because they use their bodies to communicate with us. “For example, a scared cat may puff out his tail. To us, this may seem dramatic, but from the cat's point of view, this is practical.”
If a cat is in fear of an invader or an unknown situation, “the puffed-up tail makes him appear bigger than he really is,” the cat behaviorist explained.

My poor cat got out a few days back. He was not happy when he came home and the door was closed at 4am. So he stood at the door and cried like someone was killing him. lol

One of my cats would jump up on my bedroom doorknob hitting it, until it turned and she walked in quite happy with her progress.

so often we just don't give our pets the credit they deserve ... had a sweet ginger boy who used to ring the back-door chime to be let in, and on those times when he got to the door ahead of you, he would reach up and fiddle with the latch - if he only had opposable thumbs he could have opened the door himself! I don't have a doorbell but if I did, I'm sure Teaser would know to use it. The few times she's been "accidentally" left outside, I hear a plaintive pitiful little squeak on the other side of the door.

my 15 y/o cat figured out how to use the bells at the backdoor to demand to be let in....she hadn't been in the back yard in years because of our JRT...never saw her do that until then...

Rachel also said that from a human perspective, cats may look dramatic because of their “big, expressive eyes.”
Most often, humans tend to look at their pets from their own point of view and not the cat’s point of view. This is why we tend to misinterpret things.
“We think a cat rolling around on the floor is being dramatic and trying to tell us something, whereas that cat is merely getting a good stretch for her flexible body,” Rachel explained.

The cat behavior expert also said that cats are amazing communicators, but we need to pay attention to what they are saying. “You can learn how to read his signals effectively and develop a better relationship with your cat.”
We sometimes think that if cat is acting dramatically, it is trying to manipulate our emotions. But Rachel assured us that’s not the case.
“People do tend to respond to a high-pitched meow, much like we would to a crying baby, but your cat is not manipulating you.” She also added that “manipulation, revenge, and spite are traits we humans can call our very own.”

adopted a little tuxedo kitten a few years back ... and then going to the bathroom in privacy went completely out the window for the rest of time - any time your pants are down around your ankles someone is trying to crawl into them! Mouse_2017...4e3d18.jpg
