Load More Replies...Internet memes have been a widely used visual form of online rhetoric since the early 2000s. Today they have become a prominent method of communication across the internet, but as a research subject, they're still not very well-examined.
With 20 years of communicating in memes, we still don’t know their exact implications, says Rebecca Ortiz, an assistant professor of advertising at the Newhouse School. “Research on internet meme effects is still in its infancy. But we can look to past media effects research to hypothesize how people may be influenced by them.”

Queue is from the french word and we do pronounce it "kuh", we really like silent letters, like, a lot! this one is pronounced "uh": "œufs"(eggs) but if there is only one egg, we pronounce the F, this one is prononced "o": eaux (waters), yes, just "o".

While IT IS the RIGHT thing to do, the UN is just stuck in the middle. That's why politics sucks... Especially when it's on a global scale.
But they were created to basically go into the country and try and he the people. If that government refused they would be allowed to take action. That is what pisses me off more than anything.

We should never underestimate the power that social media and the content that’s surfing there has on our beliefs, identities, and culture. “The most shareable content on social media will reach the most people and potentially have the greatest effect,” she said.
Think of memes as bits of humor that capture shared cultural meanings and speak to some of the largest audience on our planet. “[They] are some of the most shareable pieces of content on social media and therefore they deserve scrutiny and better understanding as to how they may influence us,” Ortiz explained.
In that sense, understanding a meme is a way to bond with people and feel a strong sense of community. We as humans are wired to do so, so memes are the perfect gateway to that.

Can you imagine these poor people. this blew my mind. french here
In the U.S. South, enslavers actually produced a "Confederate Bible" that was given to the people forced into slavery. It was an edited Bible that focused on obedience and servitude and glossed over mentions of revolts and egalitarianism.

The chattel slavery of the Middle Passage was vastly different than the slavery practiced in Africa. Also just because Africans sold Africans, that doesn’t erase the fact that US slavery was a racially based system of hereditary slavery that harmed the vast majority of Black people living within it. "The fact that some members of an oppressed class participate in oppression doesn’t excuse that oppression." A couple resources: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part1/1i3018.html https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2015/09/slavery-myths-seven-lies-half-truths-and-irrelevancies-people-trot-out-about-slavery-debunked.amp

In the U.S., "slavery" means Black people brought through the Middle Passage and their descendants, forced into slavery, who built this country for roughly 200 years. Rights were legally different for Black people and for white people. Erasing that fact erases a lot of history.

Load More Replies...Politics play an enormous role. The rest of the world looked the other way because Germany was seen as a buffer between Europe and the threat of Communist Russia. Japanese microbiologist Dr. Shiro Ishii was never brought to trial for his war crimes against Chinese citizens during the Second Sino-Japanese War. From 1937 to 1945, Ishii detonated bombs amid hapless victims strapped to vertical platforms, performed autopsies on the dead, vivisections on the survivors. He dropped bombs carrying the bubonic plague and studied the effects of the disease on the local population. When the Japanese surrendered to Allied forces, Ishii offered his volumes of meticulous medical studies on human subjects in exchange for his freedom. The Allied medical communities came to his rescue: such data on human subjects was invaluable. Ishii and his culpable colleagues were granted immunity.
I'd have arranged an accident after he had handed over the files.

This is scarily true and not remotely funny. One of the things one of my history teachers told our class when we were learning about the years leading up to ww2 is that Hitler was one of the greatest leaders the world had seen until the war kicked off and his clear obsession of cleansing Europe and the rest of the world was apparent. If a country is seen as being successful be it from high employment levels, manufacturing, good infrastructure, housing etc, then everything must be ok. But dig a little deeper and you find some deeply sinister things. I think the issue with China is not only is the government corrupt, media being controlled and ridiculous infrictions on its citizens, but, most countries are dependent on being able to source cheaper labour and manufacturing from there. The western world has a lot to answer for, and I'm not entirely sure how this one will be resolved without a substantial number of casualties. Sorry for the long ramble & apologies for poor grammar etc.
I dount it. However the vast bulk of Concentration Camp victims were from other countries and there were no "Jew Concentration Camps" all the camps contained a wide variety of victims: Jews, Gypsies, Communists, Homosexuals, Career Criminals, Soviet POW etc etc. Hitler certainly hated Jews but eventually he would have got around to everyone.
But thats what it says. If he hadn't invaded no one would've cared
Load More Replies...Oh... my... GOD! Never thought about it that way. It's terrible!!!
^Same. Economics is the main driving factor in making foreign morality so flexible (i.e. how much money China is worth for us), and considering Hitler was starting to roll out the (frankly phenomenal) VW Beetle, other countries would have been much too content to stand up.
Load More Replies...Nothing to believe. Other countries were pretty aware of all the injustice happening to Jews long before Nazis invaded other countries. To be honest they can keep ours. We can't keep them safe and no one even comes to visit us.
Ok I feel like I'm shitting on my country so let me explain a little XD. The situation in Pakistan has drastically improved ove the last decade and we're starting to get quite a fair amount of tourists. However, our country hasn't invested a lot in museums, heritage sites and tourist infrastructure so I think our artifacts are better off in western countries for now, where more people can view them. If you plan on visiting Pakistan, there's still a lot we have to show, just not behind glass in some aircon building. For example, just 1.5 hours from my house is a Buddhist stuppa with Buddhist statues dating back to the 2nd century! Soo yeah I really don't mind, but of course I can't speak on behalf of all Pakistanis or South Asians.

For all of you who feel that your countries are not protecting your national treasures and you feel some mistaken gratitude for other countries "saving" them, let's talk about colonies, invasions, about corruption from oil and mining companies, weapon industries etc in your lands.
The deeper you look into history the more you realize that all over the world there was a lot of invasions, war, slavery, genocide and even colonies.

Load More Replies...This is pretty big nonsense actually. The Ottoman empire got its slaves from Eastern Europe as well as Africa, the Roman word "slave" also comes from "Slav", meaning Slavic peoples. These kinds of empires were al opportunity slave traders and just took whoever they could get. The same goes for slavery in teh Americas. The natives died in too great numbers to enslave them, so slavers turned to Africa, where there was already a well established centuries old slave trade (see Ottoman sources). Slavery being tied to race was a very late development and almost entirely by chance.
Eh... slave isn't a Latin word. The Latin word for slave is "servus". Which, for some reason, is a common greeting in many European countries.
Load More Replies...So much hypocracy. Western countries have simply outsourced their slavery. It's in the clothes you buy. Yes, absolutely. It is much better to enslave them because they are slaves.

Don't underestimate the Swiss. They habe bunkers, weapons, and bombs in their tunnels / roads / mountains / bridges.

Load More Replies...Of course Zeus was a loving family man! He kept creating so much more family! It didn't exactly so much involve his wife but, he had full enthusiasm for it.
I dunno. The whole Pocahontas movie was a pretty extreme example of ignoring the source material -- and to add insult to injury, it was based on a real person, not legend.
Also, Herakles murdered Megara and their kids and then ran away. I guess that was planned for the sequel? “Hercules 2: Sh*t Gets Real”
Hera was also not the mother of Herakles - she was one of Zeus's many mortal lovers, Alcmene - she named her son 'Glory of Hera' to try to appease the wrathful goddess. Spoiler alert: it didn't work...
I like the songs. But the plot is so cringe. Hera would not be pleased being portrayed as Hercules' biological mother. She tried to kill all of Zeus' half mortal kids at least once.
Oh Well Its Not Like We Can Do Anything About That
History happened, you can't change that, learn from it and move forward. "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it"
Kaiser Wilhelm II wrote in the 20's (in exile): Jews are vermin. Get rid of them. I think the best solution would be gas? And at this point, I'm very ashamed of Germany. Antisemitism wasn't an invention of the Nazis. It was around for centuries all around in Europe. That's sad...
Everyone around me: They were SLAVES you have no rigts to say anything againts them!!!!... Me: I'm from czech republic. My ancestors were slavic.... the name Slave actually came from the name of this Slavic nation...
People are the products of their times and societies. The American Founding Fathers were both great men by the standards of their times and, in a lot of ways, by ours too. But many were also racists by anyone’s standards, then and now. Remember, there were some who fought for everyone to be free—-John Adams publicly opposed slavery and only employed paid labor (regardless of race) on his farm, and Benjamin Franklin even started the first abolitionist society, just to name a couple—-but the southern colonies wanted to hang on to their slaves and their plantation (translation: feudal lord) lifestyle, and threatened to torpedo the whole damned Revolution if they didn’t get their way, thereby forcing the anti-slavery group to capitulate, in order to at least get their vision up and running. Sound familiar?
Many of our parents and neighbours are still racist. Despite them never having even met a non-caucasian person.
History is not meant to be pleasant. It is meant to be learned. Neither is meant to be glorified. If History makes you uncomfortable, good! If your own history offends you, better. You won't achieve anything by erasing or ignoring it.
Thomas Jefferson: Wrote the Declaration of Independence, a key force in creating freedom for hundreds of millions of people, but that doesn't count because he held slaves. He's a villain. George Floyd: Robbed a pregnant woman at gunpoint, but that doesn't count because he was killed by the police. He's a hero.
People REFUSE to acknowledge nuance, because that means they don't "win" the "argument". Generally speaking, leaders are in the positions they're in because they can and will do not-nice things. That includes the ones who benefit their country, such as the Founding Fathers. But do keep up the circular arguments and unending screeching, that seems to be working out well in moving the narrative forward.

Load More Replies...The military have 50 caliber fully automatic weapons that are, by NATO, illegal to fire directly at someone due to what they do to a person. So don't think an AK or an AR are equivalent to what the military have. Also, you can't pick and choose how you interpret the laws. Such as freedom of speech. I imagine the founding father didn't even dream of something like the internet but yet what we say here is protected by the freedom of speech. In saying that, I do think some gun laws could use updating, but also keep in mind that those laws would not be adhered to by the people that break laws to begin with.
Why do u need guns? "To protect ourselves" From what? "Other people with guns"

Yes! That's what is, or at least used to be, great about America. Freedom. The freedom to speak, to practice one's own religion, to own guns, to associate or not associate with whom you choose. That's what liberals hate most about America. Because the big problem with freedom is that sometimes people don't do what you think is best. They have to be forced to do what you think is best. Because talking them into it requires logic and persuasion, and that's just way too hard.

This is so sad on so many levels. Women's rights are non existent in Turkey. Except for Melek Ipek who was acquitted for murdering her abusive husband, probably only because of the power of social media.
I think you may have missed the point on this one. It's referring to the systematic annihilation of an estimated one million ethnic Armenians in 1915, which the Turkish government still refuses to acknowledge. It is not about a little princess who is upset because her parents keep nagging her to get married. The former in my opinion is slightly more important than the latter.

Load More Replies...That’s adjusting for inflation. You also have to consider the context. First off, they were completely undeveloped territories. Secondly, wages for the average person were nothing compared to today, though skilled laborers were still able to support themselves and their families. But let’s look at their wages. For example, a mason made about $1.66/day and a carpenter about $1.08/day in 1800 (source link: https://fraser.stlouisfed.org/title/4126). They also didn’t work 8 hour days with breaks and lunch hours, or have weekends, so that pay wasn’t based on what we would consider an average shift. So $7.2 million and $15 million were astronomical, and virtually unattainable, amounts of money—-just like $37 billion and $1.2 trillion are today.
The Louisiana Purchase territory and Alaska are worth a lot more now because Americans poured billions of dollars and billions of hours of work into developing them. You might as well complain that it's unfair that a restaurant paid the grocery store only $7 for a pound of beef but then charged a diner $70 for the gourmet meal they made from it. The time and skill of the chef is worth more than the cost of raw materials.

Load More Replies...You have to face it: Most Nazi officers didn't have to flee to South America. The Soviets were too busy filling their gulags with common soldiers to hunt for the more important Nazis. The same was true in the west: After the Nuremberg Trials, mostly unimportant and low ranking Nazis were put on trial, with the idea to save the more important cases for later, when enough evidence was gathered. Of course this had the effect, that the courts grew "tired" and punishments got more and more lenient. Judges and doctors were hardly persecuted because Germany needed people in those positions. Even the Soviet-controlled GDR filled the ranks of their medical schools with former Nazis. Futhermore, the Allies were completely OK with keeping even high ranking Nazis for their military know-how.

Yes. Mostly slaves bought from African countries who raided their neighbors and kidnapped people so they could sell them as slaves to Europeans. And now the people who enslaved their neighbors preen themselves on their moral superiority over those who bought the slaves from them.
Slavery is still occurring. The Muslims would board ships in the Mediterranean and take the men for ship slaves. The women were sold to the Caliph for sex slaves.

Ok. Let's give the land in America back to the original owners. Which is ... who, exactly? Indian nations routinely fought each other and took land from each other. So which Indian nation was the original owner of any given piece of land? And if you say, "That doesn't matter. They're all Indians", that would be like saying that it didn't matter when Germany invaded France because "they're all Europeans". Saying that France and Germany and Russia are different nations with different cultures while the Cherokee and Navajo and Iroquois are all the same because they're all Indians is incredibly racist.

The first sentence was "Das Pferd isst keinen Gurkensalat"(The horse does not eat cucumber salad) spoken by Phillip Reis, a German who invented the telephone first. In 1861, he constructed the first make-and-break telephone, today called the Reis telephone.
If you've ever tried to research the development of any particular technology during the late 19th or early 20th centuries you'll see how muddy it can become regarding who actually 'invented' something first. So much innovation was going on, and so many technologies were primed to exist that the same things were 'invented' numerous times by different people, each of whom had no knowledge of the others.

Why? Financial blame was a common thing to do back then, (especially considering that the war wasn't fought on German soil and that they didn't have to repair entire provinces, like Poland, Belgium or France) and Germany was the best treated country after WW1. They only lost 1/5th of its territory, which was mostly (if not solely) inhabited by non-Germans. And all it took is putting 'terrorists' name to people who just didn't want to have their land taken from them and be oppressed. Downvote me. I don't give a s**t. Israel is the terrorist here and they're getting away with it. While they're crying bomb hit them and injured few people or killed 1- they already murdered 30x more palestinians, anyone- kids too. Disgrace.
Terrorist? The f**k would you do if your land was slowly taken from you and your people killed with silence from other countries? You'd f*****g defend it. Simple as.

Slavery was enshrined in the Constitution of the Confederacy and explicitly protected. "Slavery" was also mentioned in many Confederate states' documents of secession. These are primary source documents from the Civil War. Anyone not believing that the US Civil War was about slavery is spouting their ignorance. (To be fair, a lot of U.S. textbooks contain convoluted nonsense. They pull from the texts written after the war by the Daughters of the Confederacy -- who unsurprising tried their best to create the "lost cause" narrative and spin history in their favor. It still shows up in textbooks today.)
I remember my 7th grade history teacher telling us that the Civil War was about much more than slavery. It was about their way of life, how they make money, how they raised their family..etc etc etc. Yeah I saw past all of that BS.
Load More Replies...Yes, they were fighting for their state's right to keep slavery legal... even if you take the other side of the argument here, it's still about slavery at its core. The constitution made no statement about slavery (mainly because it was written by people own both sides of the issue), so the southern states were fighting for their right to do as they wished on the matter. They felt there was no mechanism in the constitution that allowed the federal government to dictate federal laws outside of the constitution. This is all spin control.
Okay, as a proud Southern, that argument is bs. Of course it was about slavery! That doesn’t mean we have to continue to be racist! Accept that we were wrong and move. Tf. On.

It wasn't done to "end the war", it was done to test the new weapons.
Of course it was done to end the war. Of course they also needed a field test for their new weapon, but that doesn't exclude the other reason. It was a cold and hard calculation: They assumed they could save the lifes of a certain number of US soldiers by killing a high number of Japanese civillians. Generally, it was just the same idea as any conventional bombing of civillian cities in WWII. The Nazis started doing it, the Allies brought it to terrible perfection.

At no time in the entire history of humanity have things ever been peaceful and not racist. However, for most of the 1990s, the US wasn’t engaging in extended military conflicts, so technically America was fairly peaceful.
I grew up on the East Coast of the US, but I still recall the LA riots and protests in the 90s. I was a kid, but I had family out there in California.

Not really. Marrying siblings in high nobility was almost exclusivly done for esoteric reasons. For keeping wealth and land in the family, marrying cousins was enough.

Well, to be frank, you just have to give each genre the type of music that fits. Metal just sounds "right" for military history. Meanwhile, for art history I'd suggest a youtuber strumming about the impressionists on an ukulele in their bedroom and for science it's Weird All letting it rip with an accordion about Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Most of the 'boomers' I know did more to fight for equality and rights for all than the keyboard warriors of today and they're not all financially secure as you seem to imply
This is tiresome. Very few people fought in *both* world wars, because they started 24 years apart.
Depends on the definition of "fought". Actively participated in some way to the defence of their country, that was a lot of people (Hitler for a start!), because there were older people - who fought as teenagers in the first war - who worked in factories or were part of the Home Front, etc.
