This is really flabbergasting for Europeans...... denying women abortions because of "pro life" and at the same time letting them be targets for any idiot with a gun. I don't think I'll ever be able to comprehend that.

It wasn't always like this in the states. You don't have to be that old to remember. Why act proud of it? My son is in high school now, and trying to bring him his glasses when he leaves them at home is like trying to visit him in prison. He'll never get to experience the freedom (and outright [misuse] of freedom) I enjoyed at his age, and it's a shame. Edit: Lord the censorship here is overbearing.

Guess what you're buying a sub standard product and they just says it cheaper. My God no wonder they get away with all the things they do to their citizens.

Learning to respect other cultures doesn’t happen overnight. It requires dedication, open-mindedness, and a willingness to acknowledge your own biases and knowledge blind spots. Traveling abroad, doing research about other countries’ histories, and talking to people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives can help broaden your mind. As a rule of thumb, if you can recognize that you’ve said some dumb things in the past, it shows that you’re maturing and that your self-awareness is growing

Not entirely your fault friend. When I moved to the US as a kid I was surprised to be taught that Henry Ford "invented" the modern assembly line. While he did introduce it to the US auto industry, assembly lines existed long before the Industrial Revolution. The concept was even discussed in the Wealth of Nations, a book by the Scottish economist Adam Smith, published in the late 18th Century. Hell Xenophon describes the creation of highly specialized divisions of labor in his work Cyropaedia, written in the 4th century BCE. There he observes that as cities grow, labor becomes more specialized into narrower aspects of production. That he envisions that as the complexity of production grows, he could foresee these specializations continue to narrow in such a way that a single item would be produced by a group of highly specialized professionals, rather than a single person from start to finish. Of course, he was a politician and a military leader, not a factory owner.

Ford (1903) absolutely did NOT invent the auto, but neither this Daimler-Benz (1885). Ford simply developed the industrial processes allowing for auto's mass production. Years before Daimler-Benz, Americans were literally racing automobiles (winning inventor: Thomas Carhart, 1873). Daimler-Benz simply is the longest continually ICE-operating car company, if you forget about their N**i-era bankruptcy and their rescue by American cash and engineers. A century before Daimler-Benz, Scot William Murdoch invented a steam-powered automobile (1784) and in 1801, Richard Trevithick had one in production, but it succumbed to British regulation. In 1826, Samuel Brown used an gasoline-powered ICE automobile. The original German car company was by Siegfried Marcus (1883), but N**i propaganda focused the claim to be by Benz, because Marcus was Jewish and the American, French and UK autos weren't "economically practical."

It’s very likely that you’ve personally witnessed some awful, disrespectful tourist behavior in your home country. Meanwhile, it’s probably also safe to say that you’ve also met foreigners who were kind, friendly, and respectful of both your culture and other travelers.

According to Go Abroad, you should strive to minimize the amount of bad tourist behaviors. In short, you have to be mindful of the local community, as well as the environment and wildlife.

For example, this can be as simple as not being noisy at night or respecting local religious traditions.

In fairness, there is a ferry from Catania in Sicily. It connects to both mainland Italy and Malta, so you could sort of drive to Malta from Italy, it would just take a long time.

We lived in Germany and often drove to the Netherlands to buy from their excellent Hypermarkets. We'd start the day off early and go visit a tourist spot for most of the day then head to our preferred store, grab a meal at a local restaurant then head back over the border to home, once or twice a month. Long but fun day.

It should be common sense, but seeing as it’s in particularly short supply these days, it’s important to remember not to litter or damage landmarks. Not only is this immoral behavior, but depending on the country, you can get in some serious legal trouble, too.

Furthermore, during your travels, try to avoid taking part in activities that exploit other people or animals.

It do, but my dumb American brain has a lot of trouble parsing "military time" XD I have issues with math/numbers in general (dyscalculia) so I can't easily look at the clock and see it says 17:30 and be like "oh, it's 5:30pm!" I've honestly tried to get better at it, it's not a laziness thing XD But here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time and we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric. I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD

I got into a whole discussion with someone who thought "military time" and the 24 hour clock were the same thing. They thought they were different because occasionally someone in the military will say something like 1300 instead of 13:00. Didn't see to realize no one writes 1300. I don't think I ever managed to convince him they were the exact same thing.

Meanwhile, becoming a better tourist is definitely possible with a bit of effort. You might not change how others perceive you, but you can ensure that you’ve done everything that you can to be respectful.

The first thing you should do is focus on research about the place you’ll be visiting. Read up on the local culture, customs, traditions, laws, and religions. Go through other travelers’ accounts about the challenges they faced. The more time you spend on research, the better prepared you’ll be. Of course, we all make mistakes eventually, but at least you’ll have a solid foundation for your trip.

I admit I only "know" Fahrenheit (am American) but whenever I'm telling friends/people online a temperature (whether it's the temp outside where I live or something else) I do a quick Google of "What is 75F in C" and post the temperature as both measurements, like "It's 75F/24C outside and it's January! Friggin SoCal!" It's easy and takes approximately three seconds to do XD

A quick way to do the conversion is this, either add 30 or subtract 30, then half or double that number. It's not exact but very close. Your example would be 75F subtract 30 = 45F. Divide in half = 22.5C. My parents grew up with using Fahrenheit but by the time I came along Australia had converted to Celsius so we all knew this simple calculation. They soon learnt to use Celsius but we all would use this occasionally. I still do when I'm reading Bored Panda!

How hard can it be: Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C. Body temperature is 37°C. Room temperature is defined as 20°C. You don't need much more than that. Unless you bake. I live in both worlds, imperial and metric.

I used to think it odd that in our democracy, founded upon rejection of a monarchy, we use a temperature system that's called imperial. I wonder if that's why Trump thought it was okay for him to be the king?

I was adopted at birth into a Hispanic/Mexican-American family, and when I was a little kid, my great-grandma (who immigrated to the US from Mexico) had a little black dog whose name was "Négro". My great-grandma didn't speak much English and had NO idea that the word was offensive in English/American. Similarly, I used to get a lot of Christmas and birthday gifts of Mexican marker and crayon sets from my Mexican relatives, and yep, the black markers/crayons were labeled "négro" XD It's not an offensive term in Spanish because it's LITERALLY the word for "black" the color, but one must be aware and careful speaking Spanish in America as it IS an offensive racial slur in English.

In Spanish and Portuguese there are two words for Black. We both have "negro(a)", of course. But we have a second word that specifically refers to people of black skin. In spanish it is "prieto(a)" and in portuguese it's "preto(a)". These are considered offensive in our countries, though. However, at least in Brazil, it is common hear "preto" used to describe objects. Like that is a "carro preto" (black car). Race and racism are complicated topics in Brazil though, especially when so many people identify as "pardo" (brown) or mixed race, and we have such a deep and unsettling history with slavery.

The Guardian also stresses that slow tourism can be a great idea.

“Slow tourism is about spending more time in a destination, engaging in the local culture and getting to know local people,” Dr. Peter Robinson, the head of the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Management at Leeds Beckett University, told The Guardian. You could mix things up and go to the countryside instead of only visiting major cities.

When I was a kid, we had an exchange student from Spain stay with us for a year. His name was Carlos, and he was as pale-skinned as I was (I'm adopted and white af) and he had blue eyes and blonde hair. My adoptive family is Mexican, and I grew up speaking Spanish, so I do admit that, as a child, I was initially shocked that Carlos looked "white". I honestly thought Spanish people looked similar to Mexican people because they both spoke versions of the Spanish language. My dad taught me about Spain and its cultural and ancestral history after that, so I learned a thing XD But I admit, when I was 9, it was a bit of a shock!

I have a sister-in-law from São Paulo who is of Japanese descent, and has VERY pale skin. And I have an aunt who is as dark as mahogany. When I lived in Mexico City I briefly dated a Mexican girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, and covered in freckles. I have a friend from Costa Rica with ginger hair and green eyes. We come in all shades in Latin America.

My husband's family has a lot of Spanish heritage. There's a mixture of dark skinned and light skinned Hispanic people in his family. I honestly thought he was white when I first met him; it's a lot more obvious to me now, with the high Aztec cheekbones and nose, but I didn't think about it too closely back in the day. He's got light skin with olive green eyes. Neither of our sons look the least bit Hispanic aside from bone structure, but funnily enough, their cousins are much more dark skinned. Genetics are interesting.

What is the point of saying something like that? “ we have trees older than Europe”? As an American again this embarrasses me because don’t people understand that we’re only 250 years old? There are pubs in Europe that were established before Columbus came here and every now and then you find a structure that was established before even the Norsemen came here.

I'm adopted, and there's a reason why I embraced my Scottish and Irish ancestry as a teenager, when I found out my genetic heritage via one of those ancestry sites XD America is a very young country and we don't really have any "cultural heritage" of our own. I was adopted into a Hispanic family, and I do embrace a lot of the Hispanic/Mexican traditions (I had a Quinceañera even though I'm white af, lol.) My ex is Chinese and we used to have long talks about the thousands of years of culture and history of his parents' home country XD I do think a lot of Americans cling to the shallow "YEEHAW MURICA!!!" thing because we simply feel the lack of cultural history deep in our hearts and it makes us sad XD

American's are so stupid, they do not understand that indigenous people exist all over the planet. That's how you get Eastern European/Russian models. Mix some indigenous/Asian DNA with some cracker DNA and you get smoking hot people like this Siberian woman.

My dad had a Sicilian grandmother. He was upset when his DNA came back 0% Italian. He didn't understand that there wasn't an Italy until about a generation before his grandmother was born, or that Sicily is the crossroads of the Mediterranean. He wasn't a dummy but he did have blind spots

Most of us know, deep down, that our country has ZERO cultural history, and we're sad and angry and jealous about it, so we grab on to our genetic ethnicity in order to fill that sad empty cultural hole within ourselves XD (I actually hate the "HURR I'M TOTALLY IRISH" type of thing, but it's legit that a lot of Americans either embrace "HELL YEAH!! MURICA!!" culture for this reason, or cling to "I'm 1/8th Irish and that makes me Irish!!" - we have very little culture and history of our own.)

Ancestry DNA is just a bunch of statistics held together with duct tape. They break down your DNA in pieces and associate each with the area where it is most commonly found. But nothing in DNA is really exclusive from a region. It can be useful on a population and historical level to track the flow of people. And even nowadays it's not quite relevant anymore. But as a single person... It's a lottery.

I'm American and - I am not being facetious - 99% of my family members are overweight/obese/morbidly obese. Fast food is everywhere and easy to get, and there is sugar added to EVERYTHING - our ketchup, our bread, etc. SO many of my relatives have Type II diabetes. One of my cousins died aged 24 due to massive kidney failure from his diabetes that he refused to deal with/treat. My aunt's mom had to have her arm amputated due to diabetes-caused gangrene. So many of my family members have died due to diabetes-related causes or complications from morbid obesity. My younger cousin was obese by the time she was 6. It's absolutely heartbreaking. (And it's 100% self-caused obesity in my family, not from PCOS or other health issues.) We used to have a huge family, and there are only about a dozen of my close relatives left alive at this point. It s***s. Not blaming Murica entirely as my family members had full control over what they ate (and we don't live in a food desert), but man.

Here in Murica we're taught 12-hr time in school, NOT "military time". (Similarly, we're taught the Imperial measurements, not metric, in school.) I know a lot of non-Americans think we're stupid for using Imperial and/or 12-hr time, but it's taught to us in school and all of our systems are set up to be displayed in Imperial units and 12-hr time. I promise we're not all idiots, just scréwed over by our education system XD For the most part, ONLY the military uses "military time" - our clocks and everything else uses the 12-hr system, not the 24-hr system. It has nothing to do with being proud of the military or not - we're not taught 24-hr time in school, so most of us have a hard time parsing it easily.

I get confused. a.m. = ante meridiem = before noon, p.m. = post meridiem = after noon. But 12 o'clock is noon, so it's neither before nor after. And midnight is equidistant from the previous and the next noon, so presumably it's both before and after.

That doesn’t mean you’re baffled by the thought of green hats, just that it’s new to you and outside your experience. People mocking your genuine interest would kind of be d***s, wouldn’t they?

LakotaWolf (she/her): the US uses US customary units of measurement, not imperial units - the imperial system of measurement was created in 1824 and never adopted by the USA. But these days, the USA actually operates with SI units behind the scenes. That drink claiming to be 16.7 fl oz? 1 fluid ounce for US food packaging is defined as 30ml and 16.7 fl oz is 500ml. All the science and engineering is done in SI units. Some of it's later converted to US customary units for marketing purposes. Yes, *some* things still work out as round numbers in inches and whatnot. Even here in the UK, we've got hangovers from the old days. If you're buying wood, for example, it's common to find it in (eg) 38mm width - that's 1.5 inches in old money. But it's all defined in SI units.

Why don't we just stop using words like "normal" when describing things like measurements? Or the spelling of certain words. We are using what is normal in our country. Most Americans are intelligent enough to recognize that other countries use other systems. It may be different. It's not abnormal.

So was our part of the city years ago, plus parked cars everywhere, holes in the sidewalk, no lanes for bikes. We organized and demanded the mayor to make it walkable and livable. We even had protests (and some of us were fined by the police) 😄 But now we have larger, new sidewalks with benches and trees and playgrounds for children. I'd say it's up to the residents to change things.

As an American, I am constantly appalled and astounded (and not in a good way) by my fellow countrymen who visit other countries and pay zero attention and/or DGAF about the laws and rules of that country - so they try to waltz off the plane with a kilo of weed or other substances, or weapons, etc. - things that MIGHT be legal here in the States but are absolutely NOT legal in other countries. I vaguely recall some athlete traveling to a country where weed is very, VERY illegal (I think Indonesia?) and he brought weed with him and got caught. IIRC he WAS jailed for it and got all píssy about "his rights" and how weed wasn't illegal in America so it was totally acceptable for him to have it, because HE was American. Absolutely shameful.

It's not unusual for Americans to try to drive into Canada with fire arms in their car. If they declare it, they have the option of leaving their guns locked at the border crossing and picking them up on the way back. Not declaring them though - is not good.

Many Americans strongly identify with their heritage (although more than a few of them haven't looked at their entire genealogy and just go with the family folklore). I sometimes make jokes about my German ancestors being disappointed in me for not liking sauerkraut or mustard, but don't identify as "German-American". (My family were all Mennonites in Pennsylvania and until WW1/WW2, all spoke an old version of German.)

For sorting purposes yyyy-mm-dd is the best format. In everyday situations, dd-mm-yyyy is the easiest, since you can leave off the parts not needed.

China also uses this format, as do some other parts of Asia. It's the best format for ordering files by date.

I always think of the American date as like stating the time as mm:hh:ss and then trying to justify it by saying "You say 15 minutes past 4"

I applied for a job at TK Maxx (TJ Maxx) I had to put in the dates of my last job and was told that those dates don't exist! It was then that I realised it was an American company and I had to write the dates the wrong way round.

It seems odd to me that "biggest" is assumed by so many people to equal "superior. A little 3 km walk might be the most delightful walk you've ever had in your life. What is all this boasting about biggest states, countries etc? So meaningless!

In Europe twelve official, marked, long distance international hiking routes can be enjoyed. The shortest is 1500km, the longest 12000km. Wikipedia has a very neat page about them. One of them, E9, runs alobg the village I live in. But unlike Bill Bryson with the Appalachian trail, I am not tempted to walk it.

I enjoy Bill Bryson's travel writing- incuding "A Walk In The Woods"... he's got some unique ways of describing his experiences and I often found myself chuckling while reading.

It's spelled Rechtschreibung. I once chatted to a Greek living in Germany who mentioned "right writing". I couldn't resist replying "We have a word for that in English: orthography." He had to laugh.

Europe is slightly larger than the United States in total land area, with Europe covering about 10.5 million sq km (4 million sq mi) compared to the US's roughly 9.8-9.9 million sq km (3.8 million sq mi), making Europe a bit bigger
