Um, I have rather more data points. I once personally watched 25 Peromyscus launch into space from my deer stand- 15' high measured for legal purposes - they'd been nesting there out of season - I counted them as they jumped, and watched 100% of them hit the ground running. They did not tumble as they fell, they spread their legs out like they were trying to mimic a flying squirrel; all under control, landing on tummies/feet. Not one death or injury. Other observers concur. My PhD work all had to do with small mammals- my guess on the death- "from their hand" and the post you read - is that an untrained handler damaged the mouse before it broke free; happens often. Anytime I had a new person in my lab, they were trained in handling, under all the many conditions needed- otherwise- deaths, and escapes- and bites.
