We all wonder what happens after we die. There are many theories going around depending on one's views, religion, and many other factors. Do we go to heaven? Do we reincarnate? Or do we just fade away into nothing? This comics artist named Jorgen Van Santen from Oslo, Norway tries to answer that question with his funny comics!
The main characters of the illustrations are a dead girl, who got hit by a bus while she was on the phone, and Death himself. They go on all kinds of adventures together, even visiting the land of the living. They meet all kinds of people in Death's realm, from animals to celebrities.

Here's what the artist told us about how he started creating these comics: "I came up with the idea for Death and the maiden back in 2016 because of a national comic contest. The contest gave me purpose and a deadline. I needed at least 15 episodes to participate. The comic made the top 5, so I kept making more episodes for fun.
After a while, I started posting on Tapas.io and gained some followers. In 2019, I was asked to publish in the weekend section of Aftenposten, which is the largest newspaper in Norway. I still publish two episodes every weekend here. The comics have also been published in other newspapers and comic magazines in Scandinavia. I think I came up with the idea of a comic about the afterlife because I’m terrified of death and not religious."
Peanuts are legumes not nuts. If you tell people the wrong thing except the worst.
Everyone believes that but it really isn't true, as soon as the water gets too hot it will jump out, just a bit hard to if the lid is on the top.
Who cares when there's afterlife! We only spend like 90 years here! After that, eternity!
This is also what i ever wonder about. There are big problems with the whole world, and what is important? Cars, rappers, TV's and phones.
Jorgen told us what inspires him to create art: "I love to draw, and also enjoy writing and coming up with jokes and short stories. I find inspiration for my comic everywhere, but very often during conversations with friends and family. Very often I think: 'Ha! This topic would make a great episode.'
I have been drawing stuff and reading comics all my life, so my interest in comic art has always been there. Creating communication and education concepts is also my day job, so I work with illustrations, storyboards, and animations almost every day."
Hey, we have created global warming, democracy and the atomic bomb, so shut your mouth, granny!
Uh, dinosaurs had feathers. Jurassic Park are not documentaries.
I think its saliva is poisonous, and when it bites, the saliva gets into the wound.
Load More Replies..."I decided to create Death and the Maiden for a national comic contest in 2016. I have a fascination for the concept 'life after death' and all the possibilities in such a universe. Most of the established comics in Norway are typical 'Slice of life comics,' and I wanted to do something different to stand out in the contest. Death and the Maiden came in 4th.
I actually had other plans for the dead girl (a graphic novel), but never felt ready to start the process. So now I make simple comics instead. I started posting on Instagram in November 2019, and really enjoy the feedback and comments (No such thing in paper editions of newspapers), so I guess I’ll keep at it as long as people read them!"
the grim raper has the day off basically because all of the dead people are gone
Load More Replies...Hey, at least they're already dead... so they cant die again right? RIGHT?
Jorgen tells us more about his drawing style: "My style is what you’ll probably call 'old school.' I do classic newspaper comics with 3 or 4 panels and a punchline (or two) in the end. I try to use colors, light, and shadows to accentuate the atmosphere in the afterlife. I also always try to make the next episode a little better than the last, so I spend way too much time on every episode. But if you’re into illustration, you can hopefully see a progression from the first episode."
start of 2021: trumpers ¨lets raid our own FREAKING CONTRY!!!¨
and boy, oh, boy.... 2021 certainly DID arrive big time like the Kool-Aid man busting through the door
Haha is that what I think i see? that lady flipping the bird? Awesome lol
"I wanted to make a graphic novel about a girl in the afterlife, so she was already in the back of my mind. I don’t remember how the Grim Reaper came to life. It just appeared in my sketchbook," said the artist when asked how he came up with these characters.
I'd take the opportunity, chances are he will pay me to keep my mouth shut XD
As long as you negotiate the terms ahead of time...gotta make sure he's paying you enough for what you have to put up with
Load More Replies...Someone else read the death's speach as he speaks in Terry Pratchetts books and movies or it is just me?
Jorgen said that his favorite part about art is "sketching up the panels to seeing if the idea flies or not and doing the (digital) inking." And the hardest part is "finding the time between work, family, and other commitments. I’m always short of time!"
"I grew up with classic Belgian comics and American newspaper strips. Some of my favorite creators are Bill Watterson, André Franquin, Tome & Janry, René Goscinny & Albert Uderzo."
I can explain! The artist made a comic with the reaper to the girl explaining that he appears to people in what they imagined him to be!
Load More Replies...If she died of fright, the other girl could yell at her and she would hear
Jorgen tells us more about himself and his other hobbies: "I like skiing (both cross country and downhill), fishing/boating, and running. I also love to just chill and watch Netflix. I tried gardening for a while, but it turned out I sucked. Now I just grow raspberries.
I live just outside Oslo (in Norway) with my twin boys and an annoying cat called Sonic. I am probably what you may call a 'late bloomer,' and do everything late in life. Such as creating my first comic... That’s probably why I still feel like I’m a kid, though I’m definitely not anymore!
Britney didn't cause anything. Chinese wet markets with Its inhumane treatment of animals, horrible conditions that are a breeding ground for disease, and overall cruelty caused COVID. If we would treat animals halfway decent, even the ones that are raised for food (or worse), this wouldn't have happened. You could say COVID is the price we all are paying for people that give 0 f**ks about other living things.
I’m Chinese. Maybe YOU should stop being racist about my country, the places where I live are very clean. So shut the f**k up cause I don’t want to hear about how racist you are.
Load More Replies...Sometimes I wonder if COVID-19 is Nature getting warmed up for the REALLY BIG-ASS pandemic.
Haha Britney is kinda cute and goofy looking with her little wings held out and those weird little curls on top of them... Hehe
"I would love for anyone who finds this comic interesting to follow it on Instagram (@death_andthe_maiden), and I always try to answer every question and (serious) comment. I also wish for everyone to stay safe wherever you are."
Do you want to see more comics that have been featured on Bored Panda? How about some comics about a cat? Perhaps you're more of a dog person? Or maybe you want to see some quarantine struggles? We have a lot of comics here on Bored Panda!

In my opinion, memes never die! Sure, they can become less popular, but they’re always there.
I alway cry when I hear a good song (mostly Beyoncé and weird al yancavic)

This place is located right next to the pile of U-Boats and Fabergé Eggs.
*In soldier from TF2s voice* "HELLO AGAIN" that's the first thing that came to my head.
Load More Replies...They could've helped hatch the egg and create a whole new line of Auks to sell later but I guess people in the past were Idiots :P
Incorrect grammar in the Icelandic: Fjandans* hálfviti/Djöfulsins hálfviti. We are actually working on cloning the birds...I don't even want to tell you the reason. In old cook books, they were said to be delicious.
Of course you had to make sure, that we realize, which one is the female
Laila actually had poison in her food so that she would die on the tenth day😢
I personally believe that all people reincarnate, but this is a funny strip nonetheless.
I have read that, if you are good person, you reincarnate as something higher, maybe royalty - but if you're a d*ck you come back as a cockroach or something nasty. In other words, I may have squashed Idi Amin in my bathroom the other day.
But royalty is not up the food chain. Materialistic wealth has nothing to do with it. U just r born in conditions that will give u a better chance to achieve nirvana , like u will have the spiritual teacher/guide.…but u have to constantly work for the eternal peace. It's not a one time deal
Load More Replies...If he’s wearing a turban, he’s a Sikh, not a Hindu, but it’s a funny strip all the same.
So religious people have whatever afterlife they believe(d) in, but atheists just sit around and drink booze lol
I think the artist is trying to say that death is what you perceive it as
Load More Replies...I think that was... the leader of the Al Quaeda group or something? You know, the guy who controlled the 9/11 terroist attack. :/
God, I forgot about the Sacculina barnacle... Thanks for reminding me such a nightmare fuel
Ahh brings back memories of when we were forced to watch videos of this in science...
Amen to all of the endings and their brethren. May you spend your afterlife in peace.
Well... they had no fear of humans ( hence the name dodo ) and apparently they were really tasty sooooooo....
Load More Replies...yes, and they landed in an old man's lawn, the old man shot him
Load More Replies...No, he landed in North Korea. They thought he was from the south . . .
So mermaids have mammalian sex organs or are they extremely good at giving bl*wjobs? :D
in the old times (before disney) mermaids were pictured with two tails (like the starbucks logo) so you guess what was between the two tails

Even though the word "Beeing" is an older spelling of "Being" it still kinda makes me want to call it a typo
I'll gladly spend eternity in Ikea. Good food, soft places to sleep, plenty of ways to mess with mortals.
I actually wouldn't mind haunting a baby shower or an IKEA. Maybe not as good as the usual afterlife, but they'd be fine if I had no other choice.
The amount of birds sucked into jet engines is actually quite sad to me. Nevertheless, funny strip!
he got into an argument so he fought with freddy krueger and he has sharp metal claw hands so thats why he has all those stripes in his clothes.
Load More Replies...You'd be amazed how many autopsy reports read "Patient in perfect condition".
Silly me, I always thought Death would be driving a 1970 Dodge Challenger (:
Anybody else feel like the moon was moving as they were reading in the first scene?
uh oh..... he was watching where he was going in the world reality.
You can't help but wonder if this could happen IRL. Somebody with goggles walks into the middle of a busy street--
the group of Death is the group of the strongest teams.... Germany, Portugal, France and Italy in one group would be the Group of Megadeath :-)
Load More Replies...Before anyone asks why there is "SWIPE" on the last picture I would like to add the missing 5th frame. Part_5-5ff...30-png.jpg
The age when people are kind and decent to each other. And what the artist is trying to imply is that it probably won't ever happen because people suck. It's honestly pretty sad.
