A doctor’s appointment is probably not the most awaited thing on your schedule. Trust me, your four-legged friend is likely equally unimpressed. And “unimpressed” is a soft word to refer to many people's experience of feeling anxious, nauseated and simply in fear before knocking on a GP’s or a vet’s door.

Some of us fear that the doctor will find something seriously wrong with us or our pets, others dread the “uncertainty” of whatever it is they are going to find out in their office.

And while we fight our demons armed with “what if” scenarios, some doctors and veterinarians take an extra step to make sure not just our health but also our state of being is in a good place.

So as a tribute to them, Bored Panda compiled this list with heartwarming examples of doctors and vets making us feel less miserable and way brighter. Whether it’s a simple comforting gesture or some cute decor in their office that makes you smile, little things work wonders!

My cat's vet has this in their office. They are such wonderful caring people. With one pet, the lab test came back close to closing time, and with that I knew it was time for Mr. Charles to head over the bridge. I didn't want him spending his last night in a cage away from me. They stayed open late until I could get there. Above and beyond.

I've paid extra and had the vet come to me so that it can be done in their home, on my lap. I realise I'm very lucky that so far I've been able to do that. Anything to minimise it for them.

I read that people who are putting their pet down should accompany the dog (as hard as it might be) and be there when he/she passes. It is very comforting to the dog, who intuitively knows what is happening.

Do not, ever, leave your pet alone for this. Yes, it's hard. But so much harder for them. Being a true pet mom/dad, this should not even be in your mind.

We had to put our sweet ragdoll to sleep. She was just exhausted at 18(!). Best decision ever: we had at done at home. And no, it didn't feel having Death in home. Just an instantly peaceful and soft sweetheart relaxing in her favourite blanket... Her 'frown of hurth' was gone. The vet brought a baby blanket (to keep our home clean), left us. After some time (2/3 hours) we felt okay to bring her away. We've grieved deeply, but being at home, was so much better. (Our other cat was euthanized at the vet, still loving, but leaving him behind gutted me for months.) Bringing away instead of leaving behind, is what I learned from this.

I have to go to our awesome vet clinic pretty often to pick up food, medication etc for our 3 cats. The best part is when the pet bird yells at me until I come to say hello. The worst is that I often see people entering with a pet and leaving without. Every single time it breaks my heart.

To find out why so many of us feel that anxious about visiting a doctor or a vet, we spoke with Dr. Rory Lubold, the chief medical operations officer at Galaxy Vets. “A trip to the doctor is stressful for all of us, pets included. There is an added level of anxiety with a trip to the veterinarian because we can’t explain to our pets why we have taken them away from home.”

Moreover, for pets, the veterinary office is a place with unfamiliar smells, sounds and other pets they don’t know, Rory explained. “There is often something invasive done, such as a temperature being taken and their daily routine is interrupted by this car trip, which can be stressful as well. There are specific items and attire, such as scrubs, white coats, stethoscopes, and other equipment that pets can associate with it,” he told us.

Interestingly, different medications used to be contained in different shaped bottles so people could tell the difference without having to be able to read. Now, health care professionals have to come up with new ways to address "prescription literacy" since the bottles are all so similar.

My kitty snuck out and got into a cat fight. When she was being examined by the emergency vet she climbed off the table and onto his lap. He was blown away by the trust. I think the exam was also painful (broken leg) and she climbed on him to make him stop. Side note: She healed completely and we double check before opening any door to make sure she doesn’t even think about sneaking out again.

The Naturalistic Fallacy: "it's; 'natural' so it's gotta be good." Yeah right. Arsenic is natural, so are methane, maggots and midges. Lots of "natural" things make us miserable, very ill or outright kill us, vis. snake venom.

True and people had high numbers of children to compensate for high infant mortality rates in the hope that *some* might make it to adulthood. Consequence of that was a lot of women died giving birth. Many people were widowed and married multiple times because of the death rates from what we now consider easily preventable causes/diseases but yeah totally lets have no progress in the medical field and ditch all those advances like handwashing, anaesthetics, antibiotics, vaccines and... oh yeah viagra because they all must be the work of the Devil and unnatural

Which is why I always roll my eyes (albeit often in the inside) when people claim it is 'unnatural' to see your child die before you do. No, it's really not. It's totally natural. Go and look at an old graveyard. And then go light a candle of thanks for all those who developed and tested vaccines.

The birth of modern medicine cut the rate of death tremendously. "Going natural" is the difference between going at 80 and going at 50 as an average.

Rory explained that the stress with a doctor’s visit is often associated with the anticipation of unpleasant things, and the fear of the unknown. “For pet parents, it is the fear of learning that something is wrong with their pet or the unknown costs associated with treating the pet. There can also be a negative association with a veterinarian’s office because it is the place to go when your pet has an emergency, is very ill, or where you might have had to say goodbye to a pet.”

Yes!!! This!!! Thank you! Back in my ER days we had a sign that stated the most critical patients would be seen first in the waiting room and triage/intake area and people still complained all the time...some people were nasty even when we explained why they were waiting saying they didn't care about the other people. That was my cue to just walk away because you can't argue with folks like that.

I had a fever that wouldn't go down when I was a kid, the nurse told everyone in the waiting room that she was going to let me see the doctor first. I thought it was cool that the nurse let me cut the line because there were 10+ people in the waiting room. The doctor sent me to the hospital right away and I was hospitalized for a few weeks afterward. So I guess there is some truth in this xD

The chief medical operations office at Galaxy Vets added that pets are also very intuitive and will pick up on the stress and anxiety from their parents, which can add to their own discomfort.

When asked whether there’s anything to be done to make the patients feel less stressed, Rory said that veterinary clinics have indeed many ways to make this experience less stressful and still provide excellent medicine. “There are simple things such as keeping the clinic very clean to reduce smells, adding pheromones to lower pet stress, and creating positive associations, such as treats and visits where nothing bad happens.”

I'd like to buy one for each of the three doctors who told me I was fine, while my Google search pointed me in the direction of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, a self-diagnostic confirmed by the fourth doctor who also operated on me. I'd also like to buy one for the fourth that managed to screw up my surgery leading to further complications. Finally, I'd like to buy one for everyone who downvotes this so they have a reminder for the time when they'll be in a similar situation. The only thing more dangerous than a doctor who doesn't know things is a doctor who's so complacent with the things he knows that is closed-minded to everyone else. Sure, patients are idiots, but once in a while, you come across a doctor who fits the description. Patients have the right to ask questions and express doubts when it's about THEIR OWN health without being looked down upon.

I feel this on a molecular level. We know when something is...off.. it's so gradual at first, but after exhasperated symptoms show up big we know.. no doctor actually listened to me until this team I have now. Hate the mental health questions and assumptions when they couldn't figure it out.. like it's in my head... I have bladder and liver disease.. took so long to have it diagnosed, three doctors four ER visits. Lead me to my Dr now.. I tell them it's 100% difference from everyone else I've seen. I get it sweets I'm sorry so many of us go through it

I liked how Doctor Mike (YouTube celebrity) commented on this: Medicine is always changing and doctors do NOT always know all the latest research, so it's healthy for patients to challenge their doctors a little bit, and necessary that doctors reply to such challenges with appropriate humility. Yes, a medical degree helps separate the nonsense from the riff-raff, and assess how much credibility to lend to a source; and some on-line images are no substitute for experience, so believe him when your doctor says, "No, that rash is not chicken pox."

“The most effective way to comfort patients is to change how veterinary practices approach delivering care. Veterinary clinics may add virtual care to help answer questions and treat minor conditions without a stressful trip. If a relationship with a pet and its family exists, many questions can be answered and conditions treated with a low-stress video or phone call,” Rory explained.

Another way to comfort pets is to help their parents better understand the cost expectations for care. It turns out that “financial stress is one of the most significant issues in treating pets and both pet parents and veterinary teams feel this stress.” Rory said that “we can help with the addition of clear payment options, pet insurance, and wellness programs that distribute the costs for care over a longer period of time.”

My dad was a GP. His writing was and is terrible. It looks like an inked spider got frightened and ran over a piece of paper. It then found more ink, felt better and ran back again. Other people have to fill in forms for him otherwise they’re unintelligible. There’s a small group of people who can actually read his writing. We’re in the minority even amongst my family. He has two excuses; first is that he had to fill in so many forms and sign so much stuff his handwriting suffered. His other excuse is he’s actually left handed but wasn’t allowed to learn to write with his left hand because it wasn’t correct. I can believe the latter because he is left handed but can only write with his right hand.

I always say this. If im really sick, i should be in bed resting and not leaving the house to go across the town sit in a waiting room etc. You know for whom its much easier to go get a sick note? People who arent actually sick.

I'd make this a form letter, and instruct my office manager to just print one and sign it for me whenever one of my patients came on for a "doctor's note" . Just change the name and illness as needed

Sadly Walmart still won't accept it... You MUST go thru their 3rd party company and MUST take a LOA and go thru HELL to get the Dr office or Hospital just to fill their stupid paperwork out. You also MUST call in work daily and MUST bring the paperwork 24hrs before you can come back to work or they WILL FIRE you.(this had happened to me last year when I had to take the daily COVID test and if it says for you to stay home due to having COVID symptoms and go get swabbed. It came back negative that I had a URI so I got fired) Folks, don't work at Walmart they don't accept Dr notes even if you work around fresh fruit/veggies and you can get customers sick but Walmart doesn't care. I rather work somewhere that accepts Dr notes only then get fired from being sick and went thru the hassle of dealing with their 3rd party. Oh yeah you MUST print out all 8 pages (another hassle if you don't own a PC or a printer)

If I had a pet, I'd ask this guy to marry me [for a while]. Telling Customer Service reps that their policy stinks is a battle they resist...set in concrete by "doing it the way it's always been done." You make no progress using rules from past centuries. Way to go, doc; hope you billed kitty's keepers for your typing time [also for raising your blood pressure & gulping your time]. People answering MD/hospital phones ask yr name, address, birthdate, phone #, betimes your email address, &c~~while they could find you under birthdate ONLY or phone # ONLY [program your database & you'll save hours daily]. Even when you give them your Medical Records # [you're the only one on the planet that has this unique #, c'mon], the continue to ask for info.

My son was born in November. He was due in January. On Christmas day the nurses/angels who took care of him in the NICU called me to tell me that I could finally bring him home. Best Christmas present ever. He wore a Winnie the Pooh Christmas outfit. It was huge on him. Lol. He just celebrated his 24th birthday and is brilliant with an incredible career.

We would do this for our babies that were still in hospital on Christmas Day (Australia) and our 'well' babies were kept at Mums bedside. They would occasionally come out to stay with the staff when Mum was showering, so we would dress them up then, or sneak them out for a min to dress them up as a surprise.

The anti-vaxxers might see things differently if they saw photos of how these diseases ravage the human body and the long term effects of some of them. First responders are trained to look for these diseases, it’s heartbreaking to see a child, modern day suffering greatly from something that could have been avoided with ease

They'd say the photos were manipulated. There is literally nothing we can do to prove science to them. My God, there are anti-vaxxers who have GOTTEN Covid and STILL deny the science! I must say it's heartening to get back on this board and see comments from normal people again. I thought the entire world had gone mad.

Great idea. We would always ask the patient to rate their pain on a numerical scale. 0 is none and 10 is balling your eyes out. We eventually used variations of rating pain by the expressions of the smiley face. It worked well.

We had a visit at our clinic from a patient we treated 7 years ago (when she was 11), now a fully grown woman. Her father tried to embarrass her by mentioning the picture of a donkey she drew for me. She was nearly crying when I pulled it out and showed her I've still got it.

It depends on what kind of MRI you had. I had to get a full body scan a few days ago so I had to sit still for 2 WHOLE HOURS with ADHD, and they couldn’t even sedate me because I had to stay awake to hold my breath for some parts. I did not like it one bit. I could see it being nice if you were allowed to sleep through them and it didn’t take so long.

We once had a goldfish in our staff lounge. Just so they would not get over fed we put a Medication Administration Record beside the bowl for people to sign off on feeding at listed times. One day when someone was cleaning the bowl they dropped the fish and it spent a bit if time on the floor. Put it back in the bowl. It could still swim, but it didn't look good. Our lounge used to be an exam room so it had a connection for oxygen. We rigged up an O2 nasal cannula into the water. It didn't help. It eventually died. We held a little funeral in the dirty utility room across the hall. Yep. We really did. Flushed him down the Rainbow Drain. We kept it secret because we didn't want to scare the patients that we couldn't even keep a goldfish alive.😳

Best story....My daughter had her wisdom teeth out. On the way home she started bawling. I asked her what was wrong, ready to turn around if she was in that much pain. When I got her calm enough to understand her she said, "They took them, but I wanted to keep them!" I told her I could call and see if they still had her teeth sitting out. She cried, "Not my teeth, my lips! I wanted to keep them, but they took them!" At that point, I forgot all about being a concerned mom and BUGGED THE HELL OUT!

One time I got a tooth pulled - the dentist came over with a tin that said KitKat on it and took out pliers just like this but dirty. He started to climb up like he was going to get on top of me. This guy is lucky he was under anesthetic! All good though - I heard a loud bang as my husband fell to the floor laughing, yes we knew the dentist, yes it was a joke. Grrrrrrrrr

Just as some veterinarians and doctors strive to alleviate their patients' discomfort through compassionate gestures, there are medical professionals who extend their empathy through creative means. For instance, in the world of pediatric surgery, some exceptional doctors go beyond traditional care to offer emotional comfort through art.

An inspiring example comes from a surgeon renowned for truly humane patient care, illustrating how small, thoughtful actions can significantly ease the anxiety that often accompanies medical visits.

One evening my nephew stuffed something up his nose. Way too far up his nose and mom had to take him to the free standing clinic to have it removed. Well of course that involved some cost. Even at a very young age he understood the value of money. He had a bank account and a wallet with some money in it. Mom told him to grab his wallet when they left. While he was in with the doctor, mom spoke with the front desk and explained the situation. Of course insurance was going to cover it, but when he came out his mom took him over to the desk. The clerk went along with things and drew up a bill. That will be $10 please. A shocked look. Yep. Open up that little wallet and hand over the money. Now understood that concept. Needless to say, he never did anything on purpose that may end up with a trip.

Small children stick things up their noses which is why parents with any sense don't let small children play with small things unsupervised. Super mean to basically fine him for it; $10 is a lot when you're little.

This is smart and I'm sure it's handy. I have always gone to vets that require leashes on dogs etc. The pet owner should be keeping their pet away from yours. I had a 90lb Gordon that hated other dogs. Vet visits were no problem when the other pet owners kept their dogs close to them. I never sat in the office so I could move him away if someone didn't pay attention to my warnings.

Humans can and do consume catnip. Catnip can be made into a tea to induce sleep. Women used catnip tea to give their babies as a gentle sleep aide. It has a few good uses for people too.

Before covid my chiropractor always had mini muffins (made that morning so whenever I was there they were fresh) and I would take a few for my brothers and I then my brothers wouldn’t want one so I got them all and the employees at the chiro could count on me to eat the muffins. Also before covid my orthodontist had a tea/coffee/hot chocolate machine so after every appointment my brothers and I would get a free cup of hot chocolate, they also had 2 TVs that kids could play games on

Great way to enforce physical distancing - all the seats are already occupied and I don't feel like asking them to move!
