A doctor’s appointment is probably not the most awaited thing on your schedule. Trust me, your four-legged friend is likely equally unimpressed. And “unimpressed” is a soft word to refer to many people's experience of feeling anxious, nauseated and simply in fear before knocking on a GP’s or a vet’s door.

Some of us fear that the doctor will find something seriously wrong with us or our pets, others dread the “uncertainty” of whatever it is they are going to find out in their office.

And while we fight our demons armed with “what if” scenarios, some doctors and veterinarians take an extra step to make sure not just our health but also our state of being is in a good place.

So as a tribute to them, Bored Panda compiled this list with heartwarming examples of doctors and vets making us feel less miserable and way brighter. Whether it’s a simple comforting gesture or some cute decor in their office that makes you smile, little things work wonders!

To find out why so many of us feel that anxious about visiting a doctor or a vet, we spoke with Dr. Rory Lubold, the chief medical operations officer at Galaxy Vets. “A trip to the doctor is stressful for all of us, pets included. There is an added level of anxiety with a trip to the veterinarian because we can’t explain to our pets why we have taken them away from home.”

Moreover, for pets, the veterinary office is a place with unfamiliar smells, sounds and other pets they don’t know, Rory explained. “There is often something invasive done, such as a temperature being taken and their daily routine is interrupted by this car trip, which can be stressful as well. There are specific items and attire, such as scrubs, white coats, stethoscopes, and other equipment that pets can associate with it,” he told us.

Rory explained that the stress with a doctor’s visit is often associated with the anticipation of unpleasant things, and the fear of the unknown. “For pet parents, it is the fear of learning that something is wrong with their pet or the unknown costs associated with treating the pet. There can also be a negative association with a veterinarian’s office because it is the place to go when your pet has an emergency, is very ill, or where you might have had to say goodbye to a pet.”

The chief medical operations office at Galaxy Vets added that pets are also very intuitive and will pick up on the stress and anxiety from their parents, which can add to their own discomfort.

When asked whether there’s anything to be done to make the patients feel less stressed, Rory said that veterinary clinics have indeed many ways to make this experience less stressful and still provide excellent medicine. “There are simple things such as keeping the clinic very clean to reduce smells, adding pheromones to lower pet stress, and creating positive associations, such as treats and visits where nothing bad happens.”

Conversely, don't confuse your degree with my experience living with a certain condition. (Women get their concerns dismissed SO much, as if we don't know what symptoms we're experiencing)

Might get down voted, but I think there are 2 sides to this. Don't discount my requests or independent research just because I don't have a degree. If I ask about a medicine or treatment that I've read about don't dismiss me out of hand. If you don't think its the right choice let me know, don't just tell me "I'm the Dr and I say no"

I'd like to buy one for each of the three doctors who told me I was fine, while my Google search pointed me in the direction of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, a self-diagnostic confirmed by the fourth doctor who also operated on me. I'd also like to buy one for the fourth that managed to screw up my surgery leading to further complications. Finally, I'd like to buy one for everyone who downvotes this so they have a reminder for the time when they'll be in a similar situation. The only thing more dangerous than a doctor who doesn't know things is a doctor who's so complacent with the things he knows that is closed-minded to everyone else. Sure, patients are idiots, but once in a while, you come across a doctor who fits the description. Patients have the right to ask questions and express doubts when it's about THEIR OWN health without being looked down upon.

I feel this on a molecular level. We know when something is...off.. it's so gradual at first, but after exhasperated symptoms show up big we know.. no doctor actually listened to me until this team I have now. Hate the mental health questions and assumptions when they couldn't figure it out.. like it's in my head... I have bladder and liver disease.. took so long to have it diagnosed, three doctors four ER visits. Lead me to my Dr now.. I tell them it's 100% difference from everyone else I've seen. I get it sweets I'm sorry so many of us go through it

I liked how Doctor Mike (YouTube celebrity) commented on this: Medicine is always changing and doctors do NOT always know all the latest research, so it's healthy for patients to challenge their doctors a little bit, and necessary that doctors reply to such challenges with appropriate humility. Yes, a medical degree helps separate the nonsense from the riff-raff, and assess how much credibility to lend to a source; and some on-line images are no substitute for experience, so believe him when your doctor says, "No, that rash is not chicken pox."

But also please doctors PLEASE don't ignore your patients just because they googled their symptoms! My family used to have a doctor who would instantly think we were faking symptoms or refused care if he ever found out we used Google. I get that google isn't always right but ignoring a patient is dangerous! I'll give a great example. My dad literally almost died because his appendix burst. We started googling what was wrong because my dad was complaining about stomach pain but didn't think it needed a doctor. When we told my dad we think it's a burst appendix he finally decided to go to the docs. Upon arrival we told the doctor what we found on Google and instantly sent us away with the suggestion of laxatives! The doctor didn't even bother to just LOOK because "Google is never right". We quickly rushed him to another hospital and not even 5 minutes there, they moved him into surgery! Later they told us had we arrived even an hour later my dad would not have survived!

I agree with this but I do think patients should be able to question their doctor and a good doc will welcome the chance to discuss.

And many have outdated information or not specialized... for example I work for a clinic in lactation and many general Practitioners give outdated pediatric or breastfeeding advice but are willing to learn and also learn from patients too ! Which is why a health TEAM is the way to go.... and they google stuff by the way lol there is a way to look up valid info if you know credible sources...

Please do not confuse the 1hr lecture you had on a chronic illness with the experience someone who has been living with it their entire life has. Doctors and patients need to work together as a team.

“The most effective way to comfort patients is to change how veterinary practices approach delivering care. Veterinary clinics may add virtual care to help answer questions and treat minor conditions without a stressful trip. If a relationship with a pet and its family exists, many questions can be answered and conditions treated with a low-stress video or phone call,” Rory explained.

Another way to comfort pets is to help their parents better understand the cost expectations for care. It turns out that “financial stress is one of the most significant issues in treating pets and both pet parents and veterinary teams feel this stress.” Rory said that “we can help with the addition of clear payment options, pet insurance, and wellness programs that distribute the costs for care over a longer period of time.”

We once had a goldfish in our staff lounge. Just so they would not get over fed we put a Medication Administration Record beside the bowl for people to sign off on feeding at listed times. One day when someone was cleaning the bowl they dropped the fish and it spent a bit if time on the floor. Put it back in the bowl. It could still swim, but it didn't look good. Our lounge used to be an exam room so it had a connection for oxygen. We rigged up an O2 nasal cannula into the water. It didn't help. It eventually died. We held a little funeral in the dirty utility room across the hall. Yep. We really did. Flushed him down the Rainbow Drain. We kept it secret because we didn't want to scare the patients that we couldn't even keep a goldfish alive.😳
