American news makes headlines all over the world. But if we were to judge the US based entirely on what we read and hear on mass media, where the content is trying to manipulate us into clicking and scrolling, we could end up with a warped impression of the country. So let's see what average people have to say about it instead.

We at Bored Panda have searched the internet to compile a list of relevant memes about life in the United States, and are quite happy with what we found. These images made it to the forefront of social media platforms not because they were promoted by some publisher, but because they struck a chord with the users, and when put together, paint a pretty vivid picture of the place they come from.

Continue scrolling and check out America's hottest memes.

When I first learned of this practice..... wow. It's totally insane to just have a small amount of days where you are "allowed" to be sick. And US Americans think they are free. Slaves is what they are. I hope this and other things will change soon.

Meanwhile, in Europe: I spent almost 5 months in hospital. Me - I have time to recover while my life was in danger. My boss - oh, that's fine, take care. See you when you are healthy, we will wait for you. My colleagues: take care and do not worry, we will manage for you your stuff. My husband: we still have 80% of your salary, so it's ok. My country: here is the bill: 0 euros, apart from this 20% of your salary. We hope you are ok now. So, my country didn't collapse after that, the workplace was still in great condition, and my family was financially stable for the whole of this time. Americans live in some kind of scam.

I assure you, most people are not okay with this. This is a serious problem that many of us would love to change. I'd definitely vote for someone who would address this situation, but we are so deep into healthcare for profit, there are NO candidates to vote for to change it. No one in government is even considering a national healthcare system.

In Australia, I had uterus cancer. Queue the hospital appointed social worker. Was asked if I had sick days available for treatment, operation and recovery etc. I did. If I did not forms were at the ready to ensure social security coverage. Employer would not be allowed to take any action against me, job to return to guaranteed. Conversation with bank regarding suspending mortgage payments also available. Total cost to me? Some parking and public transport, under $100 all up. No medical bills, no stress just care and recovery however I needed it. I didn't but wow, even I had no idea how much backing I had it was liberating. Yes I recovered, cancer free after hysterectomy. F**k cancer.

Massachusetts doesn't guarantee health insurance, but it will penalize you at tax time if you don't have any. So, you pretty much have to pay for private insurance through work. If you can't afford it, they take money at tax time. Still, don't give you insurance, so I'm not sure what that money goes to. The state does have free insurance, but it's not easy to get as an adult, and you can be cut off without notice. They will also sell it, yes the state will sell it to you, but again it's a lot of hoops to jump through.

The best, the most free, the most exceptional country in the world?? Aye, right. Paid sick leave is standard in most developed countries. Statutory sick pay is standard in most developed countries. Where I live, if I were to be off sick, I get 6 months at full pay, then 6 months at half pay. USA simply doesn't qualify as a civilised or developed country under most European/Scandinavian standards.

I'm born and raised in Germany, with Chinese parents who speak mandarin and Cantonese. So that's trilingual. In school we had of course English, then French, Spanish and later on in my A-Levels Latin. So it's really funny to me when some Karen demands others to speak English. In the cases of german and English I might surpass their native tongue. Let alone knowing the difference of they, their, they're and there.

But there are also a lot of Germans who can't even use basic English thanks to decades of translating/dubbing movies. and even if you are learning languages in school or university, you'd still have to practice it - a lot. So it's really good that you are trilingual, but that's definitely not the European standard. (and btw I studied 6 languages over the years and only English feels like the one language besides German where I can communicate on a proper level)

The affordability of health care is high on the public's list of the biggest issues in the United States today, with 56% of adults describing this as "a very big problem" and an additional 30% rating it "a moderately big problem," a 2021 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed.

In fact, health care cost is the only issue of the 15 asked on the survey seen as a very big problem by a majority of Americans, though about half say that the federal budget deficit (49%), violent crime (48%), illegal immigration (48%) and gun violence (48%) also qualify.

Actually, the American accent is much closer to what England spoke 200 years ago than the English one is. So no, they don't speak the way the language was intended (not that language is supposed to be static). As for spelling, Americans have dropped letters that have no purpose over that 200 years. In not saying one is better or worse, but again, language isn't supposed to be static. And I've never heard anyone in America complain that you can't spell it even complain about the l your accent, we're happy if you can speak any English at all.

The symbol meaning has migrated over time as symbols tend to do. Whatever it was meant for then, now, it pretty much stands for "I like guns", "don't tell me what to do", "I'm entitled and more important than anyone else", and "I'm probably intentionally racist, but if I'm not, I simply dgaf if flying this flag is harmful to someone else". At least that's how I see it as a fellow southerner. For me there are a couple sure fire ways to know I need to avoid someone just by their vehicle. This flag is one way, the silhouette of a naked lady is another.

As the Biden administration makes its case for massive new investment in the nation's infrastructure, its condition ranks relatively low on the list of major problems facing the country.

About a third of adults (34%) say the condition of infrastructure is a very big problem, four-in-ten say it is a moderately big problem, and a quarter say it is either a small problem (23%) or not a problem (2%).

Though neither domestic nor international terrorism ranks among the public’s top problems, roughly a third of Americans (35%) say domestic terrorism remains a very big problem in the country while a smaller share (26%) say the same about international terrorism.

In case any non-us residents are curious, since the US is so large, its divided into regions or time zones according to the sunrise/set known as pacific Time (California and west coast) mountain time (the southwest) central time (middle) and eastern time (east coast)... and so saying 8/7c means 8 eastern time, 7 central time (east coast takes priority because its latest over there)

The data also illustrates the division between Americans. Republicans and Democrats are far apart on the biggest problems facing the country.

Gun violence, the affordability of health care, the coronavirus outbreak, and racism are each seen as very big problems by two-thirds or more Democrats and Democratic leaners.

But far fewer Republicans say these are major problems in the country. Four-in-ten think health care affordability is a very big problem, and only about two-in-ten rate the coronavirus and gun violence as very big problems.

Either go to actual neighborhoods in our cities, or head out to the small towns and rural areas, if you want to see what America really is. Go off the tourist tracks. Spend time in one area. Talk to people—-most of us are really friendly and won’t think you’re weird or suspicious or anything. You could go back home with lots of new friends to keep in touch with. Stereotypes aside, most of us are just normal people going about our lives, just like you.

My dad has a similar attitude. He's fully vaccinated and therefore refuses to wear a mask, even though we still have a mask mandate here. "If I give someone covid and they die, it's their own fault for not being vaccinated." Also thinks abortion is murder and Planned Parenthood should be defunded. We don't talk about a lot of things for the sake of keeping the peace.

Americans during the pandemic were screaming bloody murder about no m**********r was going to force any kind of medical procedure on their body. The pandemic hasn't even made it to the early stages of rigor mortis and they've already got a 50 year old decision on a medical procedure over turned but many states also already have laws on the books effectively directing what medical procedures will and won't be performed on the bodies of all women in the country, possibly to the point of having to apply for a license to travel between states. I actually had high hopes for a couple of years there around 2014 and 2015 that we were no s**t turning a corner and going away from general stupidity. Then 2016/17 happened.

It often seems no longer just Republican vs. Democrat, or liberal vs. conservative. There's also tension between the 1 percent and the 99 percent, or rural and urban. Religious folks are fighting atheists, climate doubters clash with believers. Bathrooms have become battlefields, borders are battle lines. Then there's sex, ethnicity... The list goes on and the melting pot seems to be boiling, with steam filling even TV studios.

OK I googled it. This is the answer "In aviation there's a concept called [coordinated flight] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coordinated_flight), and a coordinated turn is part of that. The pilot (or autopilot) controls the amounts of roll and yaw (side-to-side) motion through the turn so that you feel only a slight force downwards in to your seat. This is a deliberate choice: if you were in a passenger in a stunt plane, there would be no coordination and you'd be falling in every direction if it wasn't for your seatbelt. "

No, not odd . You're doing it right. The reason microwave tea is so bad is that the water needs to be boiling when it hits the tea. Any cooler and you don't extract the theanines which give it it's flavour but you get the tannins instead, which are bitter tasting and stain your cups brown.

Yes, microwaving for hot tea, but for iced tea (a summer staple in the South-veery sweet!), I poke 3 teabags in a plastic jug of water and leave it in the sun for a couple of hours -- Suntea😃!

There's a few comments on here defending gun ownership. 'It's the mentally ill' 'most guns for mass shootings are done with illegal guns'. Here are some facts for you: https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2022/debunking-myths-about-gun-violence Adding my own thoughts into the mix - THE GENERAL PUBLIC SHOULD NOT OWN GUNS!!!! Why do your gun owners care more for their sodding guns than the safety of their country?????

American here, and a history/government teacher as well. One point that is often overlooked by those who are pro-guns is that the "allowance" in our Constitution for civilians to own guns is actually addressing state run militias, not private gun ownership. This would mean that gun ownership was not meant to be a free for all for citizens and implies that citizens would only need them in a time of crisis/war deemed by the federal government. It should also be pointed out that many people in the U.S. who are pro-gun argue that the writers of the Constitution would not support how powerful the federal government is today over state power. Many of the writers and early members of the federal government were actually supportive of a more liberal interpretation of the Constitution that favored a powerful federal government.

Gotta disarm the police before we even consider disarming regular people. Reason being is that legal ownership of guns is the ONLY way many black communities are able to protect themselves from white supremacists and the police. Funnily enough, gun control in the US (and California specifically) actually has its roots in a reactionary tendency to disarm black revolutionaries like the Black Panthers. Reagan famously advocated for gun control to disarm the panthers because they had actually been able to use legal gun ownership to pritect their communities from police abusing their position of power. So... until we solve the problem of police brutality in the US, I fon't think I can support laws that take away guns. It's not fair to black American communities who historically speaking... have no police system that will ACTUALLY protect them

According to researchers behind the USC Polarization Index, a tool that helps organizations understand the level of discord in America and make more informed decisions about their own positions on various issues, the threats of destabilization are coming from within and outside of the country.

Some of the fake news has been propagated by foreign countries such as Russia, while social media users have aided – at times unwittingly — in its spread. These examples include fake news stories and tweets questioning Hillary Clinton’s health in the runup-to the 2016 election. Days before Election Day, Russian-run accounts were sowing doubt about election integrity.

True law-abiding Americans do not flaunt their legal firearms, which were obtained for the protection of their families and all loved-ones. The Nazis' during the 2nd world war … would take over a country by confiscating every citizens firearms (saying "for their own protection.") Then … when every citizen, man, woman and child was helpless, unarmed and totally defenseless … they were all murdered … executed in the streets. Never allow any government to make its citizens helpless, unarmed and totally defenseless against evil!!! NEVER! Get rid of the evil and maybe I'll unarm myself! Never ever before that!

“Political scientists had opined in the middle of the 20th century that there was really no difference between the Republicans and Democrats,” said Jenkins of the USC Price School for Public Policy and director of the Bedrosian Center. “In 1950, they urged the parties to stake out distinct positions on issues so that citizens would get different perspectives. Jump ahead to today, and it’s clear that you have a real choice between the two parties.

“We look back now and wish that maybe we hadn’t asked for that,” said Jenkins, who has been studying polarization for more than 20 years.

Hopefully, Americans can still come together. They need to if they want to tackle the biggest problems in their country.

Karen is a racist term. And I've never heard anyone in America complaining about someone speaking Spanish. Maybe that happens in some areas, but I think it's likely that it's a false thing that people think about America. We have enough real problems, no need to create new ones!

I'm from Indiana. I've heard people complain about others not speaking English OFTEN when in the states. It might not happen in super liberal areas but in red areas, they are either in your face about it or saying something quietly to whoever is next to them. Being the vampire Aryan I am, they usually feel comfortable enough to tell me their opinions. Secondly, as a middle aged white woman with a near-Karen haircut... It isn't racist. It is just a nicer word for b*tch. Don't want to be called a Karen? Don't be a Karen.

See here's the thing. Yes you have the right to do as you please, except in polite company. Meaning, if you come across a community of fellow humans who have agreed to live together under a set of rules, whilst in their territory obey those rules. If you don't like the rules, go find an island somewhere and make your own bleeping rules.

Many years ago I was traveling across west-ish coast and I wandered near the Grand Canyon. It was around April. While driving towards the tourist site my car thermometer was showing something around 40 degrees. For a moment I forgot I was a European and I really wanted to change into shorts and t-shirt.

Although there are places in the US where the quality of education is poor, the majority of the states have better than average quality of education. So the above statement does not ring true for the majority of the nation. Most of the poorer states, in the Southern portion of the US, are the ones with the lowest quality. Fortunately, we are working on bringing the quality up to par with the rest of the nation.

guns and alcohol BOTH kill people..... alcohol kills thousands of people each year and causes hundreds of problems .... Idk why its even legal; Imo, both guns AND alcohol should be banned.

What cracks me up about the "Canadian accent" is that it is what most actors sound like on tv and in the movies (without the "eh") unless they are doing a specific regional accent (Eg New Yorker or Southern Drawl). Yes there are a few regional Canadian accents too but for the most part I would say 90% of Canadians sounds almost the same to the untrained ear.

That's from a documentary about an European Thalidomide victim. She chooses not to wear prosthetic hands because she wouldn't have ways to control them. It was a thing how people around her wanted her to use them, not for her gain, but because themselves would feel more comfortable seeing her.

They also really did set off nukes in the upper atmosphere for the same reason. At a time where they didn't have full confidence they wouldn't ignite earth's atmosphere completely. The same explosion caused power outages in Hawaii, satellite failures and radiation that lingered for years in the atmosphere. The newly discovered Van Allen belts were obscured for years afterwards too.

This "confusion" exists because we are taught diferent at school, in the USA and Canada they are taught that this huge chunk of land (from Canada to Argentina) is divided in 2 continents: North America and South America; and in the rest of this chunk of land we are taught that it is 1 continent called America; so you will often hear any latinamerican calling themselves Americans and not North/South Americans; and to add more confusion to the subject we (latinos) split the continent in 3 sections North/Central/South America.

In Mexico, there are those who call the US people Americans, and those who call them “estadunidenses” (meaning “from the United States”), and also those who call them “norteamericanos” (“North Americans”). The latter is falling out of common usage cause it's actually a misnomer, as you point out. The first is also a misnomer, but duh, it's as the US people call themselves.

So, it is considered normal to have people struggling to pay their bills due to not being paid a fair living wage, needing multiple jobs just to be able to survive, pay for healthcare, and have more reported shootings daily than most other countries due to some of the laxest gun control laws in the world? Guess I don't want to be normal anymore, then.

New York - Tips for Aliens (From the one book more popular than the Celestial Home Care Omnibus, better selling than Fifty-three More Things to do in Zero Gravity, and more controversial than Oolon Colluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes and Who is this God Person Anyway?): Land anywhere; Central Park, anywhere. No one will care, or indeed even notice. Surviving: get a job as cab driver immediately. A cab driver's job is to drive people anywhere they want to go in big yellow machines called taxis. Don't worry if you don't know how the machine works and you can't speak the language, don't understand the geography or indeed the basic physics of the area, and have large green antennae growing out of your head. Believe me, this is the best way of staying inconspicuous. If your body is really weird try showing it to people in the streets for money. Amphibious life forms from any of the worlds in the Swulling, Noxios or Nausalia systems will particularly enjoy the East River, which is said to be richer in those lovely life-giving nutrients then the finest and most virulent laboratory slime yet achieved. Having fun: This is the big section. It is impossible to have more fun without electrocuting your pleasure centers ...

They tried charging me 1,000$ for two x-rays. My insurance and the hospital tried saying they weren't covered because it wasn't life threatening. I laughed and told each side, the hospital found I had walking pnuemia and had mentioned how I could've died if I waited another few days (I had been bed ridden for a few days at this point so doing anything was hard on my body) and told them to figure out between each other because they ain't going to see money from my end. Apparently they figured it out without me and without my money.

I have been on ACA since I started grad school (2017—graduated 2019), couple months after getting my first post-grad job COVID hit and that ended the job. Wasn’t there long enough to get their healthcare, so stayed on ACA. I pay a couple bucks a month for bronze level coverage. Gold coverage is still only about $20-$30/month. I start a new job end of this month, but it’s with a startup, so I’m keeping my coverage until the job takes off. Before ACA, I would’ve either been uninsured and paying full price if I needed medical treatment, or paying the bankrupting rates for COBRA (used to be the only way to extend your company health insurance after you left, and it was unaffordable for the majority of people).

I get the point but, some of us must use electric carts/scooters because of illness and/or injury. Just because we might be overweight (not obese) doesn't mean our medical conditions are related to obesity. Many of us have also gained weight because we have been forced, by circumstances, to be sedentary. Just saying

In Murka, with concealed-carry of firearms legal or at least tolerated (whites only) in many jurisdictions, a prudent person assumes that everyone is armed. If someone makes a suspicious move, shoot them before they shoot you. Any hesitancy is suicidal.

Couple reasons: 1) we don’t need to. Our country is huge and 60% of Americans don’t even have passports. We drive for hours and hours and never leave the country- sometimes not even leave the state. 2) foreign language is taught too late in school. The brain loses the ability to acquire a language as a native tongue around 11-12. In many school systems, foreign language classes don’t start until 15-16. But we’re working on the latter. Kids are now learning some Spanish early- especially kids with affluent parents.

False equivalence, unless your telling me you eat a whole bag of apples in one sitting and even then just 1 apple weighs more than a full pack of doritos and an apple is roughly 50c individually so in fact significantly cheaper and healthier than doritos

Look at a map. Europeans have to know multiple languages because your countries are as small as our states. Drive 4 hours in Europe and you're in a different country. Drive 4 hours in most states and you're still in that state. Besides, most Americans can't fluently speak English.

    Brenda

Many people are multi-lingual in the US. The problem is that they don't start teaching a second language until middle school (6th grade, about 11-12yo) or high school (9th-12th grades, about 14-18yo). By then it's much harder to learn. Daughter's elementary school offered ASL, Spanish, Mandarin, and French lessons free before school. She started ASL in 2nd grade (6-7). At 21 she still knows all the basics

Only that american dictionaries differ from british ones there. But it is getting even more complicated. As English is widely used for communication between european countries whose first language is not English, some linguist even claim that a new kind of language is evolving, which is a kind of English that draws heavily on German grammatics and derives new words mostly from French. "Euro-English" is thought to be slightly simplified as it originated in exchange student and young traveler circles. It also got some new vocabulary from the administrative practice of the European Union (, which is also mostly English and French, sometimes German - yes, you won't get far there without at least being trilingual) (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_English for details).

"Yankee Doodle" hasn't been a "typical" song during my lifetime. It's mostly popular among first graders. Also, if the person who wrote this needed to gatekeep anything, it was their own grammar. "Who" isn't the correct relative pronoun in the first caption, because songs aren't alive. Standard grammar would be "having typical songs that," not "having as typical songs those who." Thank you for coming to my crabby North American TED Talk.

We are taught diferent at school, in the USA and Canada they are taught that this huge chunk of land (from Canada to Argentina) is divided in 2 continents: North America and South America; and in the rest of the world we are taught that it is 1 single continent called America, and to add more confusion to the subject we split the continent in 3 sections North/Central/South America. So from the point of view of a not US-American this european guy answer is correct.

Australia - we were taught that geographically two continents Nth and Sth America but politically/culturally there's also Central America - and that Greenland geographically belongs to N America but politically/culturally it's European.

This is where the technicalities come into it. While The "American" in this post is referring to Continental North America, the other is referring to Geographical North America. Greenland is geopolitically Europe, and all the others listed buy the "American" are geographically Central America. Neither are wrong, but the parameters were not defined.

Morons openly disrespecting the very flag that they so desperately enforce their children to worship every morning. People commonly violate the Flag Code when displaying the Stars and Stripes on apparel, athletic uniforms or bedding. The only exception is made for military personnel, firemen, policemen and members of patriotic organizations who are allowed to wear a flag patch that is customized for their uniform.
