Nearly every profession has secrets that the general public is unaware of. Many businesses claim that their goods are fairtrade, hand-made and eco-friendly when, nine times out of ten, it’s not. However, humans are curious by nature and are always trying to find out what’s going on behind the curtains.

Why are they allowed to return them? This is a disgusting policy, and impacts badly on small business, which can't afford returns of unwanted goods. I think Americans get a bit of a shock when they try this s**t on in other countries.

How? All of the EU you have the right to return purchases within 14days. Because often enough it's a scam/ it's missold/ it's not as described, citizens have to be protected from that. Yes some people will abuse that... see also: Returned obviously-used wedding dresses & other single-occasion clothes.

In my country it is the law that consumers can return any item within 14 days after purchase without reason as long as it is not a personalised item or damaged by the buyer (that was my answer to Oopsydaisy, wrong comment placement)

People do this for jump starters as well. I just think it's really dishonest. An auction I went for returned items was packed full of jumpstarters and also lots of Xmas trees just after Xmas.

I used to work at rite aid, at that time they had a no question return policy , a lady returned a kid’s folding table, after the transaction we inspect it to see if it’s damaged or can go back on the floor, it had crayon, paint markings all over, she obviously bought it for a child’s party then returned it, dumbest policy I’ve ever seen

The reason they can't is because if someone has an allergic reaction the restaurant is then liable and can get sued.

Yep. The food places at my college did this too. I once walked by one of them as the cleaner was dumping everything. He'd just opened a fresh trash bag and started dumping all the leftover donuts, bagels, muffins, scones, etc into it when he walked around the corner to grab something. The hallway was empty so i just grabbed it before he came back. Ket a few for myself and shared with the other broke af students around campus.

It’s no news that every company has its own skeletons in the closet that remain virtually invisible to the general public. Chances are that you will probably never look at the companies mentioned in this post the same way ever again. But the more we know, the better—that’s why shedding a light on these dark secrets is the first step of dealing with them.

Bored Panda has contacted one of the Twitter users who replied to this thread. They preferred to stay anonymous but were kind enough to discuss the bad practices that some businesses carry out and why we are so eager to learn about them.

They told us that they were previously employed in the hospitality industry: “I worked on and off at a few bars for some extra cash when I first moved out at 23.” Finding out what was happening in the background was quite shocking, so they tried talking about this with some of the other servers.

It has to do with how hospital tax system works in combination with insurance. It's why non-insurance clinics (Surgery Centers that are only out of pocket and for profit, no insurance) are far less likely to recommend surgery over other treatments and cost significantly less. It has less to do with hospital profits and more with how they work within the crazy system of mish mashed regulations and tax codes

Diamonds themselves are one of the biggest scams out there. They are far, faaaaaar more common than jewellers would have you believe, and their price is entirely arteficial. Many diamonds are also mined through slave labour.

Diamonds aren't rare, we know this, but a diamond with better clarity and fewer flaws etc IS rarer than a cloudy diamond with many flaws. Of course a distributor will sell diamonds to many different retailers, but the quality is VASTLY different between Walmart and Tiffany.

Tiffany’s and other high end retailers USED to sell quality items. Beautiful, elegant, well-made—-and they had people on staff to repair and/or resize the jewelry, or tailor the clothing to fit you better (and the clothes were made with better cloth, plus a couple to a few extra inches of it at the seams and hem to allow for alterations). Nowadays, though, it seems like even the expensive stores are selling the same cheap, low quality, tacky, practically sheer or cut out or printed on s**t as the discount stores, only the label’s different and they’re charging a fuckload more for it. The last time I saw that was the mid-eighties when I bought a really nice coat at the Miller & Rhoads store in Raleigh NC, but it was too long, and the staff seamstress/tailor came out and measured how much she would have to redo the hem. A couple days later, I went to lick it up and you could not tell it had been altered! Wore that coat for years, and that hem never gave out.

Not totally true, but they are different grades and quality. Talk to a GIA Certified person, different grades and quality rankings affect price. Further its a myth that Diamonds are not "rare" and therefor value is "fake" most diamonds are industrial grade, a quality used in heavy industry but would never be able to sell. Jewelry quality diamonds are not as common as people realize and their value is assessed based on a whole list of criteria from luster, to clarity to size, and imperfections, etc. Which is then graded against how rare such a diamond is.

If you're a pensioner, a child, on means-tested benefits, or have a direct relative with glaucoma and you're over 40, then eye exams are free, and you may qualify for a voucher that pays for your glasses completely.

Clarification: Luxottica not only owns most of the major frame brands, but also has licenses to produce frames for major fashion labels, like Armani and Burberry. There are only 2 or 3 players in that space, dominated by Luxottica and Essilor. If you buy from Lenscrafters then you're buying from Luxottica. There are independent frame manufacturers - thinking ZeroG, Lindberg - but you will pay a premium for their products because they don't have the distribution reach that Luxottica has.

This overbilling actually has to do with our currently regulatory system. Dr. Makary, head of policy at Johns Hopkins has written extensivly how this is done to comply with govt regulations around insurance and billing to avoid getting government fines. Much easier to do it this way to avoid govt regulators. He points out the problem in the system is how the government has so many regulations on top of regulations, that clash, that hospitals do this just to avoid violating some obscure rule and getting fined millions

In my experience - here in the US - I've not had an itemized hospital bill contain listings for medications I wasn't given, at least not while I was conscious. But I -have- seen some surprisingly hefty charges listed for 'sundries' and 'incidentals' that no hospital to date has been able or willing to break down. I'm pretty sure they cover the basic care essentials provided like toothpaste and nonslip socks, but beyond that anyone's guess is as good as mine.

Yep my friend had to fight bills for all 3 of her kids from hospital. They had so much crap tacked on she never took or did, but it was "automatically" put on as customer service would later tell her, and she go "that is great I didn't get that, so take that s**t off, also this doctor here, we never saw him I am not paying him." They would go "oh that is the one who does the epidorials!" She facepalms "I didn't get one its one of the things I told you at start I am not paying for I didn't get it!"

Looking at how many Twitter users contributed to this viral discussion, it seems like people not only like spilling the tea about their jobs but also think it’s relevant to get a little sneak peek into the profession. The former bar worker believes that people are mostly interested because there’s a suspicion that “companies are not always run above board.”

I think OP is simply saying we should trust them about whether there's any backstock. If they do, they'll take a look. If they don't, they're just avoiding a conflict with the consumer.

Depends which store and country you're in. In the UK we have so much stock back in the stockrooms and almost always have to check the computer's inventory, we don't just 'know' what's back there. When I moved to USA, it surprised me how many stores just don't even have a back stock room anymore, what's on the floor is all they have. Last time I found a place that had a stockroom in america was the shoe department at Dillards.

I generally just ask if it's possible there is more in the back. Most stores just don't have a big back room and keep all product out front if possible. A big back room is wasted space that could be used to sell that product instead of hiding it away.

That's what the code word means though - someone is stealing. We had one at Walgreens when I worked there many moons ago. Something like Code 54 in aisle 5. If you're the only one in aisle 5 and you stole something - you've been caught.

Yep, when it comes to overdrafts, say you have 100 dollars in the bank and you have a check for 20.00, 10.00 5.00 and 95.00 needing to clear. They will process highest to lowest causing all the other checks to bounce (3 overdraft fees) but if they would process lowest to highest you would only have one charge.

Nope, standard practice is to charge from lowest to highest actually to ensure the most possible transactions go through. If your bank does it the other way you need a new bank. (Source <-- banker)

Back before online banking, there was no way to view transactions in real time. My bank had a policy that deposits posted within 48 hours. The first time I overdrew was when I made a deposit and waited three days to make a purchase, but the purchase overdrew my account because the bank failed to post the deposit. From then on, I waited five days before spending a deposit, but it happened one more time anyway. I fought them on that one because one day difference might be an occasional anomaly, but failing to post my deposit in five days was ridiculous, plus, I had spent less than $20, but got charged over $300 in fees because it was something like eight small transactions and each transaction incurred a flat fee and, of course, they organized the transactions not by how they occurred but by what would get them the most money. Those are the only times in my life my account has ever been overdrawn and I am bitter that those two events exist.

That has been scrutinized and the practice has been stopped. Here's the old way: you have $100 in your account. A rent check for $400 goes through and wipes you out, but then you have two debit transactions (say $20 and $55) They would scoop out the $400 first, then the other two would hit giving you three overdraft charges. NOW you will have your two smaller transactions go through first then the one big rent check, so you only get one overdraft. If you are financially savvy you are using a credit card to pay all your bills, then pay it off when the statement comes through, so the money isn't yours if there is an issue, but I digress.

Bank auditor here - kind of. Each bank organizes transactions in a certain manner but your disclosures tell you what that manner is and it doesn't change. They've set a policy and it stays that way. It's not to ensure you overdraft, although it does obviously make that happen, it's due to how every different transaction type processes in banking. Different transactions process faster than others due to how the entire banking system is set up. Electronic transfers process faster than checks - that's just how it is, so banks post those transactions last (typically) b/c they essentially have to. Another reason why you need to read the documents you're given at account opening so you know how your account works.

That's not true. I promise you. It's against Federal Regulation and examiners and external auditors can find any instances and subject the bank to huge fines.

Many f the bank charges most people in the US see as normal are illegal here in the UK, You might pay small monthly charge if your account includes extra services (like vehicle breakdown cover, travel insurance, legal protection etc), but otherwise you will only pay a (small) charge if you go wildly overdrawn without authorisation.

Yep. When I worked at one while in college we had two "holds": "silent hold" where you werent really put on hold, just on mute and we could hear everything....and "hard hold" where you were actually put into a hold queue and could hear music and we could NOT hear you in that one. But either one...was a welcome break.

Depends on the phone service and whether the company wants to pay for it. I’ve worked jobs that weren’t customer service that had it and it was VERY eye-opening, especially when you called a fellow employee and heard what they said about you, and others as well, when they forgot about that particular hold feature.

I was once on the phone with my internet provider. The man asked if he could put me on a brief hold while he looked up my account—-forgot to put his phone on mute and I got to hear him answer a knock at his front door. It was a friend that went clubbing with him the night before, talked about and smoked some weed, cussing up a storm, just hanging out. Then he abruptly said “oh sh*t! I’m on a call!” And came back on the phone all professional sounding. He never knew I heard a thing😅

Well, actually... That depends on how options on the phones/software are used and what's available. If they have a shrivel of decency than the hold-function actually does just that, put you on hold where the agent can't hear you. And I speak of experience that it's nicer as an agent too, you get to focus and not worry about someone blabbering in your head at the same time.

Worked at a call center. We had 3 forms of "hold." One just muted our mic so the client heard nothing, one muted the mic and the client heard music, and one was actual hold where they heard music and you couldn't hear them. You could always tell which you were getting cause the first two were "just one sec while I look something up" and the real hold required us to ask if they mind holding while we checked for a solution.

    Nimitz
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The reason was because actual hold time was a metric tracked by the companies the call center was contracted to serve. Using it was bad for stats so we'd use the other two mute/holds and just check back in every minute or so.

This is true...you don't get put on hold, you get put on mute usually. And if the call is recorded, they can go back and listen even if you're actually on hold instead of just on mute.

I remember one time working on a call center, it was collections for a credit card, this cardholder had a questions, and said hold on, let me check with my manager. So what you do you mute, they can't hear you talking. This lady says this "dumb b***h b***h doesn't know anything. So I took my headseat off of mute, and said "Mam, I can still hear you wand would appreciate it if you did not refer to me in that manner". Need less to say she was quite embarrssed!

From experience: my restaurant is actually great, and always up to par; just have to be careful where employees set drinks if they're not covered (people can forget and this is very minor). I've seen many restaurants cut serious corners tho. As for the hospital: you'd better hope people wash their hands properly, gown-up properly, etc... I've seen some people really slouch there, which is worse.... This was pre-COVID tho.

Your skin also has to breathe, which is why it's strongly recommend to remove makeup before bed. It also has to do with your skin type. If your dry, you'll need to add moisturizer, if you're oily like me, maybe just rinse your face versus washing away all your oil if it isn't excessive. When I use to use regular soap, and washed it all away, my pores would freak out and have my skin recoated in less than an hour. I have a healthier relationship with it and only need to use a gentle soap every few days. My microbiome is happy and healthy

Many anti-aging creams have a vitamin (I think it was E, not sure) that causes inflammation in the skin, making it puffy and thus 'reducing' wrinkles. It's not healthy, it doesn't actually reduce wrinkles, but it looks good.

I dunno, Ive used normal drug store stuff forever, convinced by this statement then recently went to a dermatologist (I’m getting my face done for acne scars). She walked and talked me through things and I purchased $470 for a cleanser, toner and cream. I felt stupid and felt like she sold me crap I didn’t need…………. I’m seeing the results from the rich peoples products already, after remembering they have the money to make their skin more amazing (I saved hard for mine) . Even more surprising, whatever miceller water was on sale was what I was using to take waterproof mermaid make up off, but the new cleanser uses half a pea worth and takes everything off and more. Seriously noticing it, it’s been big on my fb, I have honest friends who don’t sugar coat what my face looks like etc. it’s amazing the difference and can’t wait for the scar treatment to top it off. (Dr spiller if you’re wondering on what is being used).

Yup. No difference between fancypants Creme de le Mer - a snip at a mere £125 - and Palmers Cocoa Butter. In fact Palmers is so popular it doesn't need to advertise with a large tub costing £7. Smells like vanilla caramel too.

I totally agree that big pharma is awful. But "avoid at all costs"?? I respectfully disagree. As a person with bipolar I am eternally grateful for my mood stabilizers so I can live a sweet little life. As a person of a certain age I am grateful for my thyroid supplement so I have the energy to get out of bed in the morning. I don't care for the medical industry as a whole right now but I damn well make use of modern medicine.

I worked in a *very* expensive restaurant. One night, there was a group of young doctors sitting at one of the most expensive tables available. Since I'm staff and not a person, they felt fine talking in front of me. They talked about prescribing new drugs because those drug companies pay them the most for writing that prescription. Not only are the drug companies robbing you, but they'll also pay any *willing* doctor to create guinea pigs. Those young guys also talked about their killer student loan debt. Doesn't make it better, but it's a nasty system.

Yeah but you see, some of us can’t afford, health-wise, to avoid our prescriptions. But I get the gist of what you’re saying. There’s probably a similar lack of care in materials sourcing for some companies as well.

It's complicated. You need evil and cutthroat to keep the practice of bruteforcing pharmaceuticals going. It's like cracking passwords by just trying them all. And once you hit the jackpot with that very inefficient process, you have to get all the moneys. There is no smarts in that. It's like getting your dumb big ass cousin to break and enter every home in your neighborhood to find you that extra special My Little Pony you didn't even know existed. Problem is, it's getting worse and is at the point it is actively repressing actual advancement in medicine. So. We might want to start changing how it works bout now.

Companies do a lot of virtue signalling with things like recycling, environmental protection, community initiatives etc. but if it's not cost effective, they either won't enter into it or they'll quietly withdraw or amend the policy soon afterwards. Remember, companies are there to take your money. No other reason. If there wasn't profit in it, they wouldn't exist.

The entirety of the recycling enterprise is a lie. Plastic is one of the worst lies since there is typically only one bin for plastic which means that all the various types of plastic are blended together and there's no efficient, environment, way to separate it out. Green weenies bought it hook, line and sinker and feel good about it but it's not providing any real benefit.

This is true of a lot of recycling. It's likely that most of the supposed recyclables generated in a fast-food context are mixed plastics that are difficult and costly to recycle, so recycling companies either won't accept them or toss them out themselves.

this is the entire trash collection industry in the US. We haven't been doing our own recycling ever really, we just shipped it all to china, then they stopped taking it. Basically if you don't know exactly where your recycling goes, it isn't recycling.

    Craig Reynolds

Actually, very little gets recycled. It just got packed into containers and shipped overseas to places like China. A few years ago China put an immediate ban on imported "recyclables" Apparently, it wasn't being properly sorted before being shipped and was full of non-recyclables, trash, toxic chemicals, and biowaste. The US never had a recycling program. We were lied to and just made our mess someone else's. Now it's really our mess because we have no one to p**n it off on and it's filling landfills and the oceans.

Sure they are... because obsolescence as a result progress doesn't exist. Windows was an absolute mess for a good part of its existence as they kept trying to keep it compatible with older and older hardware. Because MS's major clients, corporations such as IBM, did not replace hardware every year or two... or even every three or four years... and Windows had to keep working on older and older PCs... and their attendant ports and peripherals. Sounds like a good idea, right? Problems were all that legacy code caused problems for new machines... while code for newer stuff caused problems on older machines.

Actually calling does work, as long as you follow up. Members of congress have to log every call to their office and if the person followed up. Studies have shown that if at least 600 people follow up twice, with at least 2 days apart between calls, it gets actions. I cannot speak for state legistlators as each state had their own rules.

There is still the odd occasion when old fashioned snail mail is the best tool. As somebody who worked with politicians in the UK I can assure you a 'real' letter gets more attention and has to be logged and responded to in a different way, usually requiring a reply within a fixed timeframe. Also never use a proforma letter with pre-written text, they just get counted and don't go through the full process, you will not get a reply.

These items are flash-frozen, which as far as frozen food goes is actually reasonably healthy. The Mac and cheese is tossed 4 hours after it hits the steam table (and the bags are no secret--the kitchens are open and the bags are opened right in front of customers.) Because the soups are in large portions, they are iced and labeled at the end of each night, and the closers temperature check before putting them in the cooler. Openers double-check this in the morning to ensure proper holding. Per company standard, each soup may only be reheated one time for quality. Personally, I like novel experiences in restaurants, but in a chain where customers expect consistency, this is a decent way to execute it. -Former Panera Operating Partner

All frozen food is flash frozen (at least from the place of initial preparation). It doesn't keep very well if it isn't.

Do people really believe these franchise places are sourcing local ingredients and prepping food stock, baking and cooking fresh menu items? From Applebees to KFC, these restaurants simply reheat. Or, fry frozen.

Exposed what? This is common practice for all chains. I'm actually impressed they're in separate plastic sealed bags and at least look organized. Seen so many where it's just a tray of half-rotten meat and they're still serving it.

Soups, meat, fish, sauces are not unusual to be frozen in restaurants, even in fine dining ones. Just imagine, these items should be made in large quantities, taking 1 whole workday of a person. A jus, for example, must be cooked 7-8 hours... no matter if you are making 3 liters or 30 liters. But freakin' pasta and dairy products???!!!

Everything that is made on premises requires space to make it in, tools to make it with and space/equipment to clean it. Minimize the actual prep to industrial size sous vide equipment and you reduce the overall cost of operation.

Well, did you expect a known brand name for pasta, uncooked, so you can turn into a Karen if it's not on your table in 5 mins? Or chickens freely roaming in the backyard and then fresh on your plate. Of course everything is pre-made and pre-packaged. It's called FAST food for a reason.

probably not an animated gif (which would be easy to copy/paste, and get 'outed' very quickly) but yeah, it's not actually connected to the actual progress of your pizza, because that would require some sort of qr scanning setup, and I know for a fact that the pizza places don't do that. At least none of the ones I've ever been inside. The person makes your pizza, sticks it in the oven which spits it out in a bout 10 minutes or so, and then boxes and cuts it. No scanners around anywhere, no time taken to press any buttons on a keyboard, or anything.

Not true. Worked at Dominos. We selected the order and hit the button when we started making the order, then selected the order and hit the button when we put it in the oven, then selected the order and hit the button when we took it out and boxed it. Then the driver selected the order and hit the button when he loaded it up. We saw the status updates on a display in real time. The tracker was 100% accurate at my store

The Post Office processing centers have had this problem off and on for decades. My husband is British, and for Christmas one year I ordered a toast rack for him. It never arrived in time, I had the the PO do an investigation and they said it must be lost (took their time about it too). So I ordered another, which arrived in time for his birthday in March. Guess what appeared at our doorstep in June? In a box that someone obviously ripped open then taped back together—-probably because the hicks at the processing center closest to me, which is located in the boonies, had never seen or heard of a toast rack before so couldn’t figure out WTF it was, couldn’t sell it, didn’t want it after all, and moved it on to me. The reason I know this is that, later that summer, news broke about MASSIVE theft by employees at that processing center. FFS. The PO pays well, and the cost of living is comparatively low in that neck of the woods, yet they decided to risk their good jobs to steal? Sheesh!

UPS drivers will as well. I had a driver claim that he attempted delivery 3 days in a row, when surveillance shows he only drove up to the address, got out of the truck, got back in, and drove off. I held the package at the distribution facility. I get down there and get the package; it looks damaged. I opened it up in front of the worker, and there was a rock inside.

The downside of mail order meds... somehow my package was "lost" after I missed the first delivery attempt (I was sleeping between 12 hr shifts). They never came back with it again (I know, because I have cameras). I'm sure some fedex guy got real efficient at his job after making off with my 180 ct. bottle of Adderall xr 🙄... took me a whole month to get it straightened out with the pharmacy and have another bottle sent. Replacing a controlled substance is a lot like pulling teeth.

I have security camera footage of a FedEx truck pulling up my driveway, the driver going into the back, retrieving my package (retail box clearly indicating what was inside), then leaving without ever stepping out of the vehicle. I called FedEx that night, explained the video and the next day the package was delivered by someone in their personal vehicle late at night. The entire time they were careful to keep their face covered so I couldn't get him on camera.

Context is stupidly important here. Those sort centers have absurd metrics on packages processed per minute. The workers are so careless solely because management has put them in a position where their options are "be careless and keep your job" or "do proper due diligence and get fired for consistently not meeting metrics".

I’ve seen people in the back room of my local small town post office—-which doesn’t get the volume of packages of other comparable areas of the state—-and even they were tossing packages or practically slamming them down into the carts. And the snarl on the faces of those back room employees is practically the model for cartoons of stereotypical grumpy government employees. FFS! They’re not all that busy, so they have the time to take at least a modicum of care.

I did a project for a company to determine how much to raise the prices to cover shoplifting. It was an accepted expense. We determined how much to raise the price on everything plus how much to raise the price on selected items. For instance, adult diapers were 65% over normal cost because they were the most commonly stolen item in the $20-$50 range. They expected half of them to be stolen and they not only covered the cost of the lost merchandise, they could set a price point a bit higher because it is a necessary item. You can put the new pair of shoes back. You need the diapers. In addition, a bunch of insurance covered them so that extra cost was not absorbed by the consumer. After I did it, I now think they should always be covered as a medical expense. Someone shouldn't risk jail time over embarrassment or lack of money for a needed item.

The best time I had while working at Old Navy was when one of the 2 or 3 groups of shoplifters would come in on my shift. I wasn't part of their theft control team so I couldn't really do anything but I made sure that wherever they went in the store I was right behind them and always in line of sight folding clothes or cleaning up. It was so much fun to watch them get frustrated and fed up. One of these groups would come in with a big bag full of older (stolen) O.N. items and claim them for returns. For this group I would do the same as above but also make sure I was on register when they decided to check out. With O.N. if an old item is returned they would still take it but it was pennies on the dollar compared to legit returns so then they'd get pissy about not getting enough back on their returns.

TBH, we've walked out of a few stores and just forgotten to take something out of our cart and place it on the till. Sometimes cheap, sometimes, yeah, a little pricey! Shopping carts are huge in our country and well, it can handle a full day's shopping. Also, stores don't care who's cart you are coming in with, they're all shaped the same. They're supposed to tape up all the bags from other stores when you enter, but yeah, sometimes a few things end up in bags from other shops... Also, really high-value items carry a tag, so the alarm MUST go off when you exit the store and right there the inspect the invoice and effect the warranty for the the product, should it have one.

Nowhere in any country is the quilt/blanket covering the bed ever, EVER washed. I've worked in hotels in UK & USA as well as staying in hotels across the world. Linens are always changed, but the quiltcover is never washed or changed on the bed. Only time I ever saw one get taken off the bed was when a guest had masturbated and left his....fluid...all over the bed cover. Head of housekeeping just dragged it off the bed, threw it in the garbage and grabbed a new quiltcover from the extra's pile in the housekeeping closet.

As someone who sometimes get low BP for no reason, if I got decaf, I'd be mad. I'm in kidney failure and only allowed 32 oz. of liquid/day, so needing caffeine and not getting any when I'm limited? Rude.

I worked at Whole Foods years ago and can confirm that this is actually true and was actually one of my favorite parts of my job! More than once, if someone was trying to decide if they wanted to buy a product they'd never had, I'd just say, "Tell you what, we'll just give it to you and that way you can try it. Then, if you hate it, it's not a big deal because you didn't have to pay for it!" I loved the look on their face and how excited they'd get!

I used to work at a big box retail store (not Wal-Mart), there is no reason for them to hold back merchandise. They put out all of the sale stuff, unless it physically can't fit, and even then for black Friday they really stuff the aisles.

Black Friday as a whole is a massive scam, from companys manufacturing intentionally inferior versions products just for black friday sales, to price hikes the month before so the Black Friday "Sale" is just the standard retail price.

This is helpful! I also use walmart.com when I'm physically in the store to help me find the aisle where a product is located. On walmart.com you select the store you are in, then search for the item you are trying to find, filter search results by clicking "in-store" and voila: it gives you the aisle number. I used this trying to find furniture pads. They weren't in the furniture section like I expected, but in a random hardware aisle. Saved me a lot of wandering!

If you find it online cheaper, buy it from the seller online. There's a decent chance that person offering it is selling it to Walmart at a cheaper price than they even posted online. Walmart pays $20 for that pair of jeans and sells it for $30. Buy them online for $25 and give that small retailer the extra $5 instead of Walmart's stockholders.

First I can't afford to donate (when they ask if i want to donate to 'hunger' programs my reaction is always "bitch, I'M poor & starving, where's MY free food?!), secondly, always have your hand going directly to the mouth that needs it, you never know what the middle man is skimming.

Any time I call and there's an automated menu, I always select that I'm calling to cancel my service. That way you get routed to the Retention department, and they have access to the best promotions and discounts (and your call will be answered much faster). I call my TV provider every few months and when I get to a live person I just tell them I'm calling to see if I'm eligible for any discounts or incentives. I save hundreds of dollars every year.

Used to take my dog to an independent highly rated groomer, i'd never leave grooming or vaccinations or any type of care of my animal up to some idiot working at Petco. I'd have groomed my animal myself if I could, but she was a Hovawart and it was impossible for me to groom her, even the poor professional groomer took 3hrs just to dig through her fur. That and expressing the ana* glands, I threw money at the groomer to do that for me.

I see a lot of people don't understand the point of this tweet. He said NOW not new and he meant NOW not new. There's a massive shortage of cars right NOW, both new and used. New cars because of the chip shortage that effects most electronics. Used cars because there aren't as many new cars, but mostly because during covid (especially the first year) the rental industry took a hit. Normally, rental companies keep a car for a year, then sell the used ones to dealerships when they get the new models. With covid, a lot of rental companies sold most cars to the dealerships to stay afloat. So for a brief time, mid 2020, cars were REALLY cheap, epecially used. Now, people need cars again, but the rental companies haven't fully recovered so they're holding onto their cars longer, because its so hard to get new ones with the chip shortage. So there's no used cars either. Too much demand + not enough supply = price hikes. I could sell the car I got in mid-2020 for a profit at this point.

Car prices are insane and will continue to be until 2023 at best. Not only keep driving your beater until then, but also drive safely, because if you get in a wreck and insurance totals your car, you're stuck finding an overpriced used car in a seller's market. We sold my mother-in-law's 2014 Accord for $14K to CarMax. Without Covid or the chip shortage, that would normally get $8K for trade-in value.

What do you suggest? Walking to work, 300 km away? Never buy a NEW car unless you have stupid money to blow, but used is perfectly fine. Of course it devalues over time, it's used...

I've heard that a car loses about 20% of its value immediately you purchase it..even before you drive it...cant even sell it back to the same dealer at original price...

Used Cars are a steal... Well, no they are being sold for what they're actually worth.Luxury mid-tier cars in particular. Remember, these cars log every hard brake, every over-rev, and the last driver's style. If two 2nd-hand cars are listed in the same year with the same mileage but one is cheaper, yep, that's the one has been driven into the ground. Also buy a car you "should easily afford" over one you "can afford". All Vehicles are terrible expenses for the entire duration that you own them, or pay them off. Dealerships generally work on fixed margins in the 2nd hand market, so the more expensive one is not better, but most likely will give you less trouble.

Date of the tweet, no they meant now. Because of covid there's a massive shortage of cars, new and used. New mostly because of the chip shortage, used mostly because of rental companies (that's a long story to explain). But the price of all cars, new or used, is up. Surprisingly, if you bought a car in 2019, right now you can probably sell it to a dealer for more than you paid. But this fluke in pricing won't last long, maybe another year at most, especially since rental companies are renting again. So if you buy a car now, next year the prices are likely to revert to "normal", which will be a greater drop in value than normal, and you'll be underwater on the car almost instantly.

Same in the Netherlands. We "recycle" everything. But since people do not know how to recycle, a lot of stuff goes straight to a dump. A few pizza-boxes between paper makes the entire 10 tons of collected paper unusable for recycling.

Because we have just one bin for all recycling we actually get less of that problem. Since it all has to be separated anyway the stuff that shouldn't be there can be removed more easily than if you expect the public to separate it with the intention of sending it all directly to the recycling plant.

That's sad. I live in Medina county Ohio and we do have a recycle plant. Absolutely 100% of the garbage goes through this facility first. I did a college science report on the place. They even take garbage from several other counties to recycle.

My city had a huge recycling program (think fines if you didn't do it properly) and because we were part of a pilot project, it ended. The funny part is, it wasn't widely known that it had ended, so everyone was still recycling like their life depended on it, and the city was still racking up fines. If came out about two years after that all of our recycling was going to the landfill. So I really don't care about recycling, but it's just going to the same place

The largest trash collector in my town goes the other way. Every bag that goes in the bin is torn open and sorted through with anything of value being pulled out. In addition to the landfill, they have a "place" outside town where they pile different recyclables waiting for the price to go up. When Trump and China started their embargos, they just piled up scrap steel, copper, and aluminum. Once Biden ended them, they sold their piles off to the Chinese. Just Checked and they don't have anything posted for my town right now but they're paying $22/hr in Dallas, TX for sorters.

Why don't we have the Swedish take over the global recycling? They do a better, more efficient job than the chinese or our domestic recycling programs, they were so efficient they ran out of recycling for their own country and started importing other countries trash so they could keep their recycling plants running. We have the amazing people to fix this problem, let's get them on it!

Not true. Most waste management companies are private & how they process it is up to them. Some make profit just disposing and some break it apart and sell off all of it as some sort of asset. In some US states it has to NOT go to a landfill because we don’t have landfills. Nor do we sell it to another location. My local (in US, not NL) waste management company keeps recycling, yard waste and household trash separate. It gett put into a processing belt/system where it’s separated by type of trash. From there it is sorted out into organic, metals, types of metals, plastic, etc. and it is all sold off to other companies for whatever they use it for.

Many stories are scripted with actors. Fact is authors can get paid if they sell stories to play, not for real people telling what really happened them. You can spot this when the actors clearly never match to the story, i.e. a fit shape model with a "not so well looking" type, to be polite.

It's nonsense. The carbonation is in the soda, Straw has nothing to do with it. A bigger straw just lets you drink it faster. You go get more since you finished drinking before you finished eating and will want some more to drink. McD's doesn't do free refills.

Not quite. I used to work there, and honestly it's one of the better companies in retail. It depends on the profit margin of the product. Like on paint we made almost no money. The real money was in accessories and disposables. Our department was also the target of frequent scams. A popular one is where a customer orders a can of paint, then comes back and says that they don't like the color. They return the paint for a refund and leave. We mark the paint down and put it on an end cap. Their buddy/partner comes back and buys the same paint color for a very significant discount. We would always add new pigment to returned cans in order to foil this. It was hilarious to see the looks on scammers faces when we did it.

Every single other bread company adds chemicals, sugar, honey, corn syrup etc. Otherwise I have to go to the local european-style bakery and have them custom bake me loaves of 'clean' bread.

Nope. Ounce isn't a size, it's a weight measure. 16 oz you bought years ago is the same 16 oz you buy now. What they are doing is selling you 14.5 oz for the same (or more) price you used to pay for 16 oz.

If they advertise the same oz size, they are the same oz size. Well, maybe that doesn't go in the US, but in Europe they aren't allowed to lie about that. They do make packages smaller and keep the same price, but then the oz size is also different.

I just tested this with HagenD and Ben/Jerry. The weight was nearly perfect t to the oz after cutting off packaging. Granted, an is it two melted in the process but they’re a curYe to the weight.

In Europe this is illegal, all packages have to display the weight of the food item, not including packaging.

Same in the US. WjT they’re saying is that they’re smaller portions than they used to be but still meet the weight on the outside.

Same with crisps/potato chips in the UK. Regular sized packs branded as Grab Bags (whatever TF that means) are only half-filled. Why buy? Why indeed. The scam leaves a nasty taste but Wotsits are 😋

Not sure about other places but in California USA, It doesn't matter why your employment is terminated, they are required to pay you for your unused vacation. Vacation pay is considered part of your wages if it is in writing when you start employment.

But in the USA people are afraid to use their vacation time because they can't afford to be unemployed. So it doesn't matter anyway which method the company uses.

Are you trying to say that people will be fired for using their vacation time? That hasn't been the case in any of my US jobs. People may feel too busy to use it but that has nothing to do with not affording unemployment....

This one is objectively not true. Sure, there are items marked up so they can fake a mark down. And there are junk items sold cheap. But there are tons of sales on items that I've been watching, and are available at significant discounts. They are considered loss leaders to get you in the store doing your holiday shopping.

Also, they're not the same products. They're built from parts that fail QA for the full price products. So they're made cheaper to sell cheaper. Just look the same. At least as far as electronics go. I used to work with QA at a semiconductor manufacturer.

A lot of these "secrets" in these BP posts carry the same flavor of entitled, socialist, class warfare rhetoric made by an old white over 150 years ago... being regurgitated by infantile, naive (and real world ignorant), supposedly highly educated, recent university graduates... that I've read/heard for decades.

This makes it sound like people who clean bathrooms and theaters are gross and shouldn’t be permitted to work with the food. Very untrue and unfair. Trust me, when you clean anything like that you WANT to wash your hands immediately. What’s more likely to be overlooked is handling money and they washing your hands.

Or, don't go to movie theaters at all. Rely on your streaming services or learn how to pirate safely with a VPN. The day of the movie theater is dead, hollywood just won't let it go. At their prices, it's cheaper and better to wait a little bit and stream it at home where there's no loudas* americans talking/chewing too loud or have brought their damn kids or won't stop farting or their hygiene is awful so you spend the movie holding your nose. Not worth it anymore.

One of my earliest jobs was at a Hardees and I hated it when people would do that during a lunch rush. It slowed me down, it slowed down EVERYONE'S orders and literally your fries (salted or non) never hung around long enough to get soggy to begin with! The only thing that you are doing is inconveniencing other people.

When driving I hate fresh hot fries, give me the ones that have been sitting for a couple of minutes. I can eat them faster.

This obviously depends on the grocery stores you go to. Yes, it is true for some big chains, but totally untrue for other stores.

My neighbor is the bakery manager at one of our area grocery stores. It’s a grocery chain with 190 stores in 4 US states and they bake/fry all of their items. So this isn’t the case in all stores.

Another not true one. SOME cakes are bought in pre-frozen, but others are not. At my local Smith's there's a lovely baker who makes, from scratch, the best cheesecake i've ever had in my life. She mixes and bakes the cheesecake herself, melts the chocolate and drizzles it herself, and hand decorates the whole top with fresh fruit. I watch them baking cakes constantly in that bakery, mixing the icing, hand decorating - and it's a local crappy supermarket chain.

Depends on the store. Costco you can literally see the bakery and them cooking it. There is a chain of stores near me that each store contracts out their bakery to a nearby independent bakery. So my store in Queens gets in the cakes and cookies daily from a bakery in Brooklyn, and the bread comes in par baked and finished in a convenction oven on sight

BS. This is also specific to one experience at one point in time. My sister does the holiday pastries for a large supermarket in US. She’s friends with many of the bakers who bake all morning and day long.

Correlation is not causation. The computers are slow because they are old and no one cares - also because someone renting a computer is probably not a "power user". It's not some sophisticated ploy to jack the customer around.

Yah, that's a weird post. AFAIK, copier charges are based on the number and type of copies, not on how much time you take. Copier tip: most libraries have copiers and scanners you can use for free if you have a library card. They typically have a daily or weekly allowance for each person, so you can't print huge documents, but most people need just a few pages now and then anyway.

No one would do their work on a staples Copy & Print station, everyone would come in with it already on a flash drive. You'd go to your local library and get your computer work done for free, then walk your butt to Staples to print it out, but who is 'working' on a staples print & copy computer like they're at a damn internet cafe? No one.

I'm call Bullshit, I have worked at different movie theaters and my sons have worked at movie theaters. The one thing in common, at the end of the night all popcorn was thrown away or taken home by employees. After a while you get sick of popcorn and it gets thrown away. you can always tell the new employees who ask for the popcorn at the end of the night.

Popcorn is dirt friggin' cheap to begin with! These theaters are really gouging everyone! And then to "recycle" the previous night's leftovers ... Wow! I think I've used up my quota of exclamation points for the day.

Theaters don’t get a single cent of box office for the opening week/weekend and after that only a very small percentage. Thank often don’t make 50% of the ticket cost for the first two months, by the time the movie is either out of the theater or hardly filling the seats. makeUpwards of 80% of their revenue is concessions. I used to asst manage our local theater company and witnessed what a slim margin they operate on. Which is why they’re a dying business in the steaming and a CoVidian era.

Going by 99-X's flavor (which apparently is the original recipe slightly tweaked by the Colonel himself), sage is an ingredient. I've tasted 99-X without chicken masking the flavor and I know what uncooked sage tastes like; it's pretty distinct.

Nope. I have been told this recipe over and over practically since the first days of the Internet (like 1997) and it does not taste like KFC. Plus a lot of these bird almost immediately when you fry the chicken.

First of all …. You can look up the recipe on line and get it. It’s not a secret. So that brings me to why in all that’s good and exclusive, you would try and ruin a company and post what u thought was a secret. That’s just mean and selfish.

A lot of Dunkin’ Donuts are independent franchises that make their own choices about what to do with food. I live right between two Dunkin’ Donuts and they both have very different policies.

This needlessly spreads fear. You don't know that all doggy daycares have abusive employees. Instead, we need to be aware that this *can* be an issue, and we should do our research and try to find a responsible doggy daycare.

The doggy daycare we send our puppy to has a 24/7 camera on the area that they actually keep the dogs so it’s impossible for the employees to abuse the dogs. I loved being able to watch my puppy play with the others over that camera

That is appalling. Hope it's not true of the UK. We famously adore dogs and I would hope that for all our faults, we still have enough humanity to hire people who love dogs in order to care for them. Hurting my pet would be dangerous.
