Despite the strong job market, most Americans don't have enough emergency savings. More than two-thirds of people in the US — 68 percent — say they're worried they wouldn't be able to cover their living expenses for just one month if they lost their primary source of income tomorrow, according to a recent Bankrate survey.
In part, this can be seen in the growth of the subreddit 'Poverty Finance.' The firs time we wrote about it in 2021, the online community had 847K members. Now, the number has more than doubled, standing at 1.9 million. So since financial struggles have remained a pressing issue, we have decided to revisit this corner of the internet, and show you what the gang have been posting lately.

I think money management courses should be required for all high school students. I know I wish I was required to take one or more. My parents didn't really teach us anything about money
It’s required at my school!! We’re doing a Dave Ramsey course, and I am really glad that Dave Ramsey comes from a place of being broke, because he experienced money problems himself

Money buys survival. Try being happy when you're starving to death in the middle of the street. "Nobody wants to work anymore". NO! We never WANTED to work. We work because dying of poverty is the ONLY other alternative for most of us.
People say sosialism is for weak or dumb states, but in reality sosialism pays you a little money every month so you dont Jack up crime rates and hang in the streets every day. Its very smart and so mych easier.

Agreed!! I would be A LOT happier if I had MORE money to spend on “a safer environment, physical comfort, medical and dental care…” Conversely, I would be A LOT happier if “a safer environment, physical comfort, medical and dental care” cost a lot less.

This Post Brought To You By My Third "New" Tire This Year Since I Can't Afford A Full Set
I'd never buy one tire (unless I had one ruined by a puncture). It's always better to buy two at a time otherwise the wear is unbalanced and they don't last as long. It really sucks if you can't afford to do that :(
Went through the cycle of I can't afford the better shoes for work so I'll buy this $20 pair that wears out in 3 months and replace them with the same ones every time.
So true indeed. Being poor, you can't invest in long lasting stuff so you have to buy more often, which is expensive.
More than that, though... For reasons, I didn't have access to banking for many years. It was so expensive to just pay my bills. I spent at least $15/month in fees to just give companies my money. And one bill I had to pay in person because the only other way involved a bank account. It was 57 miles, round trip.
Load More Replies...Our tires so far have been punctured ( like 3 this year) due to nails or materials from the roads being constructed every where, and our awful trash company that left all glass from the recycling on the streets, I’m lucky I live next to a used tire shop, got them at like $15 a piece
That's convenient that you live next door. About a year ago my 2 front tires were very bald and there was no way that I could pass state inspection for safety so I bought 2 used tires with enough tread that I could pass inspection. I think I paid roughly $60 for the 2 tires which lasted a little less than a year.

We didn't need science to tell us that LOL I already know I'm stressed!
That class should not be an elective but a standard in medical school. Too many western Dr's look at only the tangibles like diet and exercise as the cause of illness while ignoring the effects of emotional health.
An example : I recently was hospitalized and the nurse took my blood pressure, by machine which registered 118/20. While the device was still attached, she told me I'd have to stay one more day, and immediately my BP shot up to 195/35.

You can often just look at the faces, hands, and skin of a poor person of a certain age, and a rich one. We age more rapidly and harshly than rich people. We are exposed to more danger, stress, injury, sleeplessness, bad diet, and loss of hope. It takes a toll on your body, and spirit.

Checks Out
This is a catch 22 for the banks though. They've come under fire for lending too much, too easily to people who can't service the loans (or at least have difficulty doing so). So refusing to lend people money if they'd struggle to pay it off is actually them being *more* ethical. So refuse to lend, they're bastards for refusing. Merrily lend, they're bastards for foreclosing on people when they can't pay. The killer is, as it's always been saving that damned deposit. The biggest problem is inflation has made the deposit so big it's almost unachievable :(
During the recession of 2007-2008 it had come out that many banks (US) were lending people money for home purchases without checking their income. That's a bit insane and definitely greedy.
Load More Replies...$950 mortgage + $200 insurance + 350 property taxes + $100 water and sewer bill + $200 misc. household repairs. That's $1900. The bank knows you can't afford that.
Most rent doesn't include renter's insurance, water, electricity, or repairs on appliances. Also, if you spend $200 a month on home repairs, you should have had a better inspector.
Load More Replies...Sure. You're good enough a risk for a 6-12 month period. But a bank loan is a 30 year commitment. If you fail to pay rent, they just evict you. Might take a couple of months, but they get rid of you and find someone else. If you fail to pay a mortgage, it can take a year or more to get rid of you and the only way to re-coup their costs is via selling the property which may or not turn a profit.
oh. my. god. It is all so stacked in the banks' favor. Short and long term. Banks could take on WAY more risk, and absorb way more defaults and still make a killing. Or they could just be humane and find creative ways to reschedule missed payments and help people who go through hard times, taking short term losses to keep the payments coming. The problem is that in many cases (I mean think of the seller's market now) banks can come out ahead on a foreclosure.
Load More Replies...You need testimonials from previous landlords in order to get approved for a rental. So you can't get a rental either.
Apartment complexes are being built like crazy lately, and it only recently dawned on me that this^ may be part of why
Its not the monthly mortgage payment that is impossible to afford, its the 20% down payment
I couldn´t even pay that. 1500 is like 95% of my monthly income after taxes 😬
That's the stress test. Banks can't give you a loan based on your current income, or on trust that your income will grow, but they have to take in consideration that you could end up unemployed, get sick etc. It's crappy but banks both protect their interests and protect you from ending in bankruptcy.
Getting a car is way easier than getting a house. I may have bad credit but if I could buy a house I would because of all the bills I would pay I would definitely pay my mortgage because if I didn't I would be homeless. It stinks that I can drive a nice car but live in a rental.

Oh but wait I thought money couldn’t buy happiness? Make up your minds. Btw yeah it can buy happiness. Even if for an hour or a decade.
Money can't buy happiness--in a country where basic needs are provided or easily achievable. But in the US, your damn right that money can make you happy if you are suffering in poverty.

When This Hits
I have always wanted to win an appliance. I like getting useful gifts. Ironically, when I enter a raffle or a lucky draw, I usually win something I can't use myself. So far, I have won a cd from famous artists who I don't even like, so many dolls, a photo album of japanese boy bands whose name I don't even know, a bicycle that is far too small for me, a woman blouse (I am a man) and other things I can't quite remember. The most useful thing I have ever won is an electric kettle.
But, you are, in fact, a WINNER! Much better than being a loser. I occasionally buy a lottery ticket, and when I scan it to see if I won, every time it says "Sorry, not a WINNER!"
Load More Replies...When I was small my parents won a set of steak knives in a raffle which they kept stashed away and never used because they didn't like them. They're my steak knives now.
Hell, people get excited winning $5 on a scratch off ticket, it shouldn't be surprising that winning a $500 (or more!) appliance makes people happy. I recently bought a new stove so I wouldn't want another one, but my fridge is starting to show wear, so I'd love to win one of them :)
Important to note here (given the pic of Price is Right) that "winners" on this show cannot collect their prizes unless California taxes are paid on the retail value of the prize. The taxes must be paid BEFORE you get your prize. Many of the high-value items (cars, trips, appliances) are not claimed because the "winner" can't afford the taxes. Only cash winners are actual winners.
I once won a fully functional mini oven from a raffle ticket my friend brought me. Also, it was purple, which was GREAT

Can Anyone Explain Where My Starbucks Money Is Going?
Literally no one expects it to make you a billionaire. The question is how many starbucks were you buying in a month before? If it was 10 then you should have 20xhowever much the drinks cost still in your bank account (less a few bucks for making your own). And if you're not seeing that extra money in your bank account, then you spent it on something else. It's never been about magically making you a fortune it's always been about small incremental increases to savings. Just like practically every other financial tip. Here's a good one, if you aren't seeing savings then create a second saving account that you don't have a card for. Every time you save money on something (like making a coffee instead of buying starbucks) put the amount you saved into that account. At the end of the month/quarter/year take a look at it. That's how much those changes actually saved you.
"Every time you save money on something (like making a coffee instead of buying starbucks) put the amount you saved into that account." - Except the reason I make coffee at home is the same reason I cook at home. I haven't got the money to go out so there is no money saved to be put in an account.

My Current Financial Strategy
I'm a teacher at a Title I school that provides free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, if kids are too late for breakfast (which stops being served before school begins), they don't get anything. Teachers have to provide something for them to eat or they just go hungry until lunch. And I'm sure those same kids don't have dinner. We've talked to the school superintendent and the principal with no solutions offered other than "they'll just have to get here earlier."
It sounds harsh but they have to. If they didn't, they would have to move over and over again the deadline to fit everyone. A mess to put in practice. BTW telling families that schedule is important is a good lesson some of them need. I've worked as a helper with families from the lowest classes of society, and many didn't get that being helped implied respecting an organization. They came when they wanted, not when we were opened and even complained about it. Not because they were busy with work or anything, they just didn't get we were not at their disposal.
Load More Replies...I find one meal a day (dinner) works best for me, granted it's a heavy meal, 1/2 cup dry rice, 1/2 cup mixed beans soaked overnight, 2+ cups random veggies, 1/2 pound of random meat, 1 liter water, random seasoning or fajita seasoning, pressure cooker set to 10 minutes, done and warm after an hour or so nap. One tea bag will make 2 liters if you dump the tea bag's contents into a metal tea ball (better water flow) and lightly simmer with 2 liters of water.. You end up going to the bathroom when you wake up so you usually don't need to use the bathroom much at work. If there's a meal event at work just cut back on or skip dinner.

Load More Replies...I'm curious firstly what the dwelling average rent is calculated on. Is it a one bedroom apartment, a 4 bedroom house or is it across every type of building? And secondly, what type of average are we talking? Mean, median or mode? If it's mean it can be skewed high by the astronomical rents for fancy places in big cities. One would hope they're using Mode since it's probably the most accurate for a scenario like this. But who knows?
I think this is where that came from: https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/ So average size of a 1bdrm = 897sqft. Broken down by $/sqft and then reconstituted into a sort of mean average.
Load More Replies...When you're poor, you have to sacrifice a comfortable living situation to make ends meet. That means living in a below average apartment, or having roommates. This seems obvious to me, and yet I worry it's considered controversial or an unpopular opinion.
Virtually nobody makes the minimum state wage, let alone the minimum federal wage, to be fair. My 15-year old stepdaughter got a job at an ice-cream parlor starting at $15 with no experience (first job ever, for the summer) in a relatively low cost of living area. She's just a kid with no expenses, no education (yet, in progress) or experience. If you make anywhere near the minimum wage, there's a reason for it - especially these days. Most commonly for my area, it's because you don't speak English or Spanish, and refuse to learn. If you can't communicate effectively with your team, you're pretty much going to be doing low level agriculture or some kind of cleaning work unless you get hooked up within your diaspora.
Well, your stepdaughter is lucky. Sadly minmum wage is reality for far to many people - and often the "reason" is "just because the employer can"

Load More Replies...Unfortunately this is a sad reality for many but sometimes I can't sleep if I'm too hungry. The hunger pains keep me awake.
Too broke to eat is a great diet. I've lost 25 pounds this year from stress and food prices. Why isn't my generation buying houses and having children? Because the middle class is starving.
I once went a year never wearing clothes at home, because I could do less laundry. My choice was "do you want to wash those pants, or do you want ramen?"
Our first house was 35K. The mortgage was $177. My dad made $400 a month.
Bought A Burger For Dinner. "A" Burger
Yeah... I've been saving for console since the 360 came out. Still don't have one, but that's a few hundred dollars less debt.
This one hits hard. My husband and I rent our home in a suburban area in Germany. We are not from Germany but from the UK and graduated with massive student debt (also no bank of mum and dad - my husband grew up in poverty and I am mainly estranged from my parents). Within the space of one week, I got a text from a friend saying a house near them was up for sale and were we interested in buying it? And another from a distant relation saying they were getting married in Cancun and could we RSVP. I mean... we are living off supermarket loyalty points, trying to scrape together enough money to buy school things for our daughter and listening to everyone else talking about where they go skiing in the winter. It's got to the point where I am starting to feel ashamed to invite people over because we don't have a shiny new barbecue worth thousands of euros or a fancy coffee machine. Our house is a chaotic tip because we are both struggling mentally. Just trying to shower our kids in love.
Water is usually all you need to make things clean. I promise you as I have barely used any soap for about 3 years now. Guess what? We're being lied to for others' profits. Try not washing with soap or shampoo for a week. You'll go "Oh yeah, it's actually unnecessary."
Got Myself A Motivational Pin At The Thrift Store
Why don't you reach on in my pocket and see what it is?
Load More Replies...I'd love to find that pin at the dollar store. Means I don't have to explain myself to anyone if that information is required
In Trying Times Like These, It's Important To Remember This Advice
According to Karma you get reborn as the people you hate or abuse. So, I really hate the ultra-rich. Dang ultra-rich.

I normally choose my host bodies from the disabled, destitute, suicidal, so that I'm not taking someone's nice life. Next time, I'm getting some billionaire's kid, and when I grow up, I'm spending their money and influence on other people's needs.
I Used To Think Going To Macdonald’s When I Was Young Was Exquisite
Kids with a playground in their backyard, or a tree house.
A cabinet with a bunch of fluffy white towels you don’t actually use

Going to the store and buying whatever you needed and add on whatever you wanted without counting and adding the total in your head
My mom sewed for a rich lady. She had 3 daughters who were a couple years older than my 2 sisters and me. At summer's end, the girls got all new school clothes. The lady 'paid' my mom with their old clothes. They were beautiful and luxurious, like wool skirts and mohair sweaters. My mom was so happy to see us going to school in lovely clothes and proud that she was able to get them for us.
Growing up in England in the 60's, any family who had a colour TV was thought to be rich
Playing tennis, going to skating rinks, having meals at restaurant. Few things that only the super rich students did in my school. Its not that we never ate outside but it was more of snacks. An important meal like breakfast, lunch, or dinner would be always at home.
Me After Paying Rent And Bills This Month
My niece dating now--"you have the WHOLE basement to yourself....hey boy haaayyy"
When you're 19?? The point is many people are staying home longer and having a basement to yourself is better than sleeping across the hall from your parents.

We’re already paying $20 for tacos. they just skipped the increased wage part

Easy, eat and rob some rich people, then invest the money for a few centuries. It's not like they need to buy groceries. Free meals are just walking around. Or be like Lestat, and inherit a treasure trove from your maker. 😄

$10 per hour wage in australia is livable only if the govt. removes income tax and gst.
Where I live wages were raised. Then five months later costs for all life essentials tripled. Sometimes I wonder if there is a connection.
