Despite the strong job market, most Americans don't have enough emergency savings. More than two-thirds of people in the US — 68 percent — say they're worried they wouldn't be able to cover their living expenses for just one month if they lost their primary source of income tomorrow, according to a recent Bankrate survey.

In part, this can be seen in the growth of the subreddit 'Poverty Finance.' The firs time we wrote about it in 2021, the online community had 847K members. Now, the number has more than doubled, standing at 1.9 million. So since financial struggles have remained a pressing issue, we have decided to revisit this corner of the internet, and show you what the gang have been posting lately.

I think money management courses should be required for all high school students. I know I wish I was required to take one or more. My parents didn't really teach us anything about money

I make 75% more than I made in 2000, but have less buying power now than I did then. At least my mortgage payment is a smaller percentage of my pay.

I'm still poor, bit at least I'm not dirt poor anymore. By the time I finished paying my bills, I'd barely have $300 to last a month! Talk about pinching every penny! Fortunately, I inherited some $. It's not a lot of $ in today's economy but to me it's a lot of dough.

Money buys survival. Try being happy when you're starving to death in the middle of the street. "Nobody wants to work anymore". NO! We never WANTED to work. We work because dying of poverty is the ONLY other alternative for most of us.

Money alleviates a huge amount of stress and anxiety. Money buys a safer environment, physical comfort, medical and dental care. Money can't make you happy, but it can sure take away a lot of the problems that make people unhappy.

Agreed!! I would be A LOT happier if I had MORE money to spend on “a safer environment, physical comfort, medical and dental care…” Conversely, I would be A LOT happier if “a safer environment, physical comfort, medical and dental care” cost a lot less.

More than that, though... For reasons, I didn't have access to banking for many years. It was so expensive to just pay my bills. I spent at least $15/month in fees to just give companies my money. And one bill I had to pay in person because the only other way involved a bank account. It was 57 miles, round trip.

Our tires so far have been punctured ( like 3 this year) due to nails or materials from the roads being constructed every where, and our awful trash company that left all glass from the recycling on the streets, I’m lucky I live next to a used tire shop, got them at like $15 a piece

That's convenient that you live next door. About a year ago my 2 front tires were very bald and there was no way that I could pass state inspection for safety so I bought 2 used tires with enough tread that I could pass inspection. I think I paid roughly $60 for the 2 tires which lasted a little less than a year.

Terry Prachett summed this up perfectly,”The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.”

You can often just look at the faces, hands, and skin of a poor person of a certain age, and a rich one. We age more rapidly and harshly than rich people. We are exposed to more danger, stress, injury, sleeplessness, bad diet, and loss of hope. It takes a toll on your body, and spirit.

A former schoolmate used to lecture me that "money isn't the only thing that matters in life". A former friend would mock me for trying to earn some money during high school: "You're distributing ad flyers on the streets? Wow, I would never go that low". Both of them used to spend their weekend at the mall, going to cinema and to cafeterias - with money from their parents, of course.

This is a catch 22 for the banks though. They've come under fire for lending too much, too easily to people who can't service the loans (or at least have difficulty doing so). So refusing to lend people money if they'd struggle to pay it off is actually them being *more* ethical. So refuse to lend, they're bastards for refusing. Merrily lend, they're bastards for foreclosing on people when they can't pay. The killer is, as it's always been saving that damned deposit. The biggest problem is inflation has made the deposit so big it's almost unachievable :(

During the recession of 2007-2008 it had come out that many banks (US) were lending people money for home purchases without checking their income. That's a bit insane and definitely greedy.

    $950 mortgage + $200 insurance + 350 property taxes + $100 water and sewer bill + $200 misc. household repairs. That's $1900. The bank knows you can't afford that.

Most rent doesn't include renter's insurance, water, electricity, or repairs on appliances. Also, if you spend $200 a month on home repairs, you should have had a better inspector.

Sure. You're good enough a risk for a 6-12 month period. But a bank loan is a 30 year commitment. If you fail to pay rent, they just evict you. Might take a couple of months, but they get rid of you and find someone else. If you fail to pay a mortgage, it can take a year or more to get rid of you and the only way to re-coup their costs is via selling the property which may or not turn a profit.

oh. my. god. It is all so stacked in the banks' favor. Short and long term. Banks could take on WAY more risk, and absorb way more defaults and still make a killing. Or they could just be humane and find creative ways to reschedule missed payments and help people who go through hard times, taking short term losses to keep the payments coming. The problem is that in many cases (I mean think of the seller's market now) banks can come out ahead on a foreclosure.

That's the stress test. Banks can't give you a loan based on your current income, or on trust that your income will grow, but they have to take in consideration that you could end up unemployed, get sick etc. It's crappy but banks both protect their interests and protect you from ending in bankruptcy.

Getting a car is way easier than getting a house. I may have bad credit but if I could buy a house I would because of all the bills I would pay I would definitely pay my mortgage because if I didn't I would be homeless. It stinks that I can drive a nice car but live in a rental.

I have always wanted to win an appliance. I like getting useful gifts. Ironically, when I enter a raffle or a lucky draw, I usually win something I can't use myself. So far, I have won a cd from famous artists who I don't even like, so many dolls, a photo album of japanese boy bands whose name I don't even know, a bicycle that is far too small for me, a woman blouse (I am a man) and other things I can't quite remember. The most useful thing I have ever won is an electric kettle.

But, you are, in fact, a WINNER! Much better than being a loser. I occasionally buy a lottery ticket, and when I scan it to see if I won, every time it says "Sorry, not a WINNER!"

When I was small my parents won a set of steak knives in a raffle which they kept stashed away and never used because they didn't like them. They're my steak knives now.

Hell, people get excited winning $5 on a scratch off ticket, it shouldn't be surprising that winning a $500 (or more!) appliance makes people happy. I recently bought a new stove so I wouldn't want another one, but my fridge is starting to show wear, so I'd love to win one of them :)

Important to note here (given the pic of Price is Right) that "winners" on this show cannot collect their prizes unless California taxes are paid on the retail value of the prize. The taxes must be paid BEFORE you get your prize. Many of the high-value items (cars, trips, appliances) are not claimed because the "winner" can't afford the taxes. Only cash winners are actual winners.

What is a mini oven exactly? Like a toaster oven sized appliance with a convection oven or like an easy bake oven type of thing? Sorry for the random questions but I keep trying to picture a purple little oven but clarification would help. 🙂 edit: typos

Literally no one expects it to make you a billionaire. The question is how many starbucks were you buying in a month before? If it was 10 then you should have 20xhowever much the drinks cost still in your bank account (less a few bucks for making your own). And if you're not seeing that extra money in your bank account, then you spent it on something else. It's never been about magically making you a fortune it's always been about small incremental increases to savings. Just like practically every other financial tip. Here's a good one, if you aren't seeing savings then create a second saving account that you don't have a card for. Every time you save money on something (like making a coffee instead of buying starbucks) put the amount you saved into that account. At the end of the month/quarter/year take a look at it. That's how much those changes actually saved you.

"Every time you save money on something (like making a coffee instead of buying starbucks) put the amount you saved into that account." - Except the reason I make coffee at home is the same reason I cook at home. I haven't got the money to go out so there is no money saved to be put in an account.

I'm a teacher at a Title I school that provides free breakfast and lunch. Unfortunately, if kids are too late for breakfast (which stops being served before school begins), they don't get anything. Teachers have to provide something for them to eat or they just go hungry until lunch. And I'm sure those same kids don't have dinner. We've talked to the school superintendent and the principal with no solutions offered other than "they'll just have to get here earlier."

It sounds harsh but they have to. If they didn't, they would have to move over and over again the deadline to fit everyone. A mess to put in practice. BTW telling families that schedule is important is a good lesson some of them need. I've worked as a helper with families from the lowest classes of society, and many didn't get that being helped implied respecting an organization. They came when they wanted, not when we were opened and even complained about it. Not because they were busy with work or anything, they just didn't get we were not at their disposal.

I find one meal a day (dinner) works best for me, granted it's a heavy meal, 1/2 cup dry rice, 1/2 cup mixed beans soaked overnight, 2+ cups random veggies, 1/2 pound of random meat, 1 liter water, random seasoning or fajita seasoning, pressure cooker set to 10 minutes, done and warm after an hour or so nap. One tea bag will make 2 liters if you dump the tea bag's contents into a metal tea ball (better water flow) and lightly simmer with 2 liters of water.. You end up going to the bathroom when you wake up so you usually don't need to use the bathroom much at work. If there's a meal event at work just cut back on or skip dinner.

There's still a lot of poor decisions involved with living beyond your means. A nice car with 30% interest when you're renting an apartment is ridiculous. Owning 12 pairs of Jordans when you're living in government housing is not the best use of money. Buying a $300 bottles of booze just to dump it on the floor of a Houston nightclub is a terrible investment. Paying 20 times the original price of a rare pair of kicks is mind blowing. Financial education restraint in America is severely lacking.

I was buying a small package of chicken thighs, laundry detergent, asparagus, soup and a 12 pack of coke and card declined so I asked the cashier to get rid of the coke and detergent and card went through. As I was approaching my car the cashier came running out and said I forgot my soda and detergent. I was confused and she said she purchased the items for me because I chose to put the soda away and chose to make sure my son (whom was with me) had a healthy dinner. She said she’s seen people put the necessities away and keep the junk food so she was impressed. It made my day!!

When I was homeless I would go to a kebab shop at the end of the night and ask for 50p worth of anything that they were going to throw away. Once a week they would give me a full meal with a can of coke. They saved my life and once I was on my feet I still went there once a week but paid full price and left a tip to say thank you.

Just a small rant here, im 16 and live with my grandma who is 63 and we live in a 2 bed 1 bath house that we pay 1,500 for a month not including bills so when everything is paid it comes up to around 3,000-3,500 a month with only my grandma paying the bills while i look for a job and do school because my grandpa died 6 months ago and his son just so happens to be our landlord and he know how much we struggle we have been here for 11 years and even with the price that our rent is now, if we wanted to move anywhere out of here we would most likely have to leave Washington because everything is two f*****g expensive, im only f*****g 16 it hasent even been a week since my birthday i should be worrying about my grades but instead im constantly worrying were gonna get kicked out or lose everything cause of how expensive everything is,. Thank you for your time you may continue to mindlessly scroll, may we meet again

Hi Noah. Your post touched me. You have taken on responsibilities at a young age. Taking care of your grandmother is such an honorable thing to do. Your efforts will certainly be rewarded if you can hang in there. God bless you dear.

I'm curious firstly what the dwelling average rent is calculated on. Is it a one bedroom apartment, a 4 bedroom house or is it across every type of building? And secondly, what type of average are we talking? Mean, median or mode? If it's mean it can be skewed high by the astronomical rents for fancy places in big cities. One would hope they're using Mode since it's probably the most accurate for a scenario like this. But who knows?

I think this is where that came from: https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/ So average size of a 1bdrm = 897sqft. Broken down by $/sqft and then reconstituted into a sort of mean average.

When you're poor, you have to sacrifice a comfortable living situation to make ends meet. That means living in a below average apartment, or having roommates. This seems obvious to me, and yet I worry it's considered controversial or an unpopular opinion.

Virtually nobody makes the minimum state wage, let alone the minimum federal wage, to be fair. My 15-year old stepdaughter got a job at an ice-cream parlor starting at $15 with no experience (first job ever, for the summer) in a relatively low cost of living area. She's just a kid with no expenses, no education (yet, in progress) or experience. If you make anywhere near the minimum wage, there's a reason for it - especially these days. Most commonly for my area, it's because you don't speak English or Spanish, and refuse to learn. If you can't communicate effectively with your team, you're pretty much going to be doing low level agriculture or some kind of cleaning work unless you get hooked up within your diaspora.

And keep in mind the average is for everywhere. The average anywhere _in your city/region_ may be a lot higher. It's $2k where I live. NYC is something like $5600.

Minimum wage in Australia is $23 per hour. Average rental is $2000 per month. Rent has risen 25% in past 2 years and mostly since interest rates have been going up in past 12 months. Why do landlords get to compensate for interest rate hikes when home mortgagees cannot??

so true. There was a post on BP about what kind of stuff people in New York put out on the curb, and my mind was blown. such nice looking furniture. In my country it´s only trashed furniture you couldn´t use anymore that gets put out like that.

Yah, we had bedbugs about 10 years ago - and you don’t realise you have an infestation until it gets pretty bad. My husband and son were out of town, so I had to turn the whole house inside out by myself for the exterminator. It was so traumatizing that I cross the street now (still) if I see furniture out on someone’s curb 😩😂

I get really excited when I make it to 100 and then literally, quite often in the same week something, anything will need fixing right away. I read comments online like by the time you're 30 you should have one years wages worth of savings in your account and I think 'no chance, I'm no where near this, I guess if I had to stop working now, I'd be screwed 😬' How does anyone build up like 30,000 (ish) savings? Privacy[dot]com lets you set up virtual credit card numbers and you can set monthly or permanent limits on how much can be charged on them. For example: I got a deal for a $1/month subscription to my local newspaper for 1 year. I set up a card on Privacy with a $12 limit on it. When the trial is over, the virtual card will quit working. They won't be able to charge me the regular subscription rate. Best of all, Privacy is free for personal use.

And then after working broken for long enough, you gain the "destroyed" trait, and can't work, and then you're f****d. Imagine having no savings, and becoming too disabled to work. Now you spend the next couple of years applying for disability. You are meant to somehow survive this with no money and no ability to work. Then, if you get it, your entire disability check is not enough to rent a studio apartment, much less pay for food, bills, and the stuff for your medical condition that Medicare and Medicaid don't cover. Welcome to my life.

Yeah... I've been saving for console since the 360 came out. Still don't have one, but that's a few hundred dollars less debt.

This one hits hard. My husband and I rent our home in a suburban area in Germany. We are not from Germany but from the UK and graduated with massive student debt (also no bank of mum and dad - my husband grew up in poverty and I am mainly estranged from my parents). Within the space of one week, I got a text from a friend saying a house near them was up for sale and were we interested in buying it? And another from a distant relation saying they were getting married in Cancun and could we RSVP. I mean... we are living off supermarket loyalty points, trying to scrape together enough money to buy school things for our daughter and listening to everyone else talking about where they go skiing in the winter. It's got to the point where I am starting to feel ashamed to invite people over because we don't have a shiny new barbecue worth thousands of euros or a fancy coffee machine. Our house is a chaotic tip because we are both struggling mentally. Just trying to shower our kids in love.

Water is usually all you need to make things clean. I promise you as I have barely used any soap for about 3 years now. Guess what? We're being lied to for others' profits. Try not washing with soap or shampoo for a week. You'll go "Oh yeah, it's actually unnecessary."

According to Karma you get reborn as the people you hate or abuse. So, I really hate the ultra-rich. Dang ultra-rich.

I normally choose my host bodies from the disabled, destitute, suicidal, so that I'm not taking someone's nice life. Next time, I'm getting some billionaire's kid, and when I grow up, I'm spending their money and influence on other people's needs.

My grandparents invested in 500 shares of apple when I was born. It was to be my college/starter fund. It'd almost be worth dealing with that side of the family, but they think I'm dead.

Being able to pay for school lunch. The poor kids all got it for free. The middle-class kids had to bring lunch from home. If your parents could afford it you were loaded.

My mom sewed for a rich lady. She had 3 daughters who were a couple years older than my 2 sisters and me. At summer's end, the girls got all new school clothes. The lady 'paid' my mom with their old clothes. They were beautiful and luxurious, like wool skirts and mohair sweaters. My mom was so happy to see us going to school in lovely clothes and proud that she was able to get them for us.

Playing tennis, going to skating rinks, having meals at restaurant. Few things that only the super rich students did in my school. Its not that we never ate outside but it was more of snacks. An important meal like breakfast, lunch, or dinner would be always at home.

When you're 19?? The point is many people are staying home longer and having a basement to yourself is better than sleeping across the hall from your parents.
