Controversial Comic Reveals What You’re Really Saying When You Support Gender Equality, But Not Feminism
749Kviews
Gender equality is the state in which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. As you can see from this funny cartoon by Nathan Yaffe from CollegeHumor however, even though the two terms share many similarities, some people have very different ideas about what they actually mean.
While feminism is fundamentally about gender equality, some folks think that true equality can only come about by oppressing and persecuting men in the same way that men have done to women throughout history. It makes for a funny cartoon, but in reality it’s important to remember that this is far from what gender equality actually means! Do you think the artist made his point? Let us know in the comments below. (h/t: collegehumor)
People had some pretty strong opinions about the cartoon
What do you think?

This cartoon illustrates the danger in trying to encapsulate a philosophy in a catchy name. No one's beliefs are cookie-cutter enough to fit a label.
Very well said!!!
Ditto! I'd love it, however, if someone was able to articulate in a few sentences what feminism stands for: what would an ideal world look like to feminists? Asking this because I see lots of seemingly contradictory comments, and I suspect I'm not the only feeling confused here :)
Agreed, as I said in my comment, since Feminism has proven itself to be a political movement and ideology, there is no way it can claim to hold a monopoly on the idea/philosophy of gender equality.

except Democrats
The comic has hit the nail on the head. Feminism is fighting for equal treatment and equal rights, not worsening the treatment towards men or going eye for an eye. It's for raising the standard for women, not lowering the standard for men.
I like the way these cartoons show the difference between true feminism which is about gender equality.....raising the standard for women not lowering the standard for men or getting back at them for the sins of their fathers.
Constant repetition of something which is constantly contradicted is less than convincing #ActionsSpeakLouderThanWOrds

Raising the standard for women is not equality. There are areas where men are discriminated against, and there are very few feminists that gives a shit about that.
Raising the standards for women is a first step, because they are the most disadvantaged - especially when factoring in race and ethnicity, age, religion, etc. What are MRAs doing, other than complaining about feminism and pretending that women are better off in society?
"Very few feminists that gives a shit about that" - Fair. Just show the statistic and source

It should. But today's feminists are not up to this standard.
Yeah, they are. You only see what you want, Hugo.

Agreed! The feminists in America are doing alot to help their tones of rights and no real issue for women :)
Sometimes people get more focused on terms than the concept itself. How are we ever going to really find the answers when we cannot agree on the language used to formulate the question..
While there should be more focus on the actual issues, don't forget that words have weight as well. From what I've seen - and my experience is limited - people who tend to vocally reject the term feminism also tend to minimize the issues that women face, and feel like we're much closer to actual equality than we currently are. That is a problem, because how do you want to truly help a cause when you're unable to recognize the depths of the issues?
