They say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree... unless you fast-forward it several generations or make some name changes or have a diverse gene pool, making the apple look like it fell from an orange tree. Genetics sometimes works in mysterious ways—whether it is grandparents, parents or siblings—prompting the occasional “that’s your dad?!” or “you look nothing like your sister” from friends and acquaintances.

Bored Panda has prepared a list of famous people who are related to notable figures in history that many people didn’t know about.

Abraham Lincoln & Tom Hanks

Abraham Lincoln & Tom Hanks

In case you didn't know this yet, Tom Hanks, an actor who's considered to be Hollywood royalty, is related to one of the greatest American presidents, Abraham Lincoln. Hanks is related to Lincoln through the president's mother, making him the third cousin four times removed of the former president.

To Jackson & Abigail: to be descended from someone, you need to be in their direct line, ie Abe's children, his children's children, their children, etc. Your nephew is related to you, but not a descendant. So if Tom Hanks is related only through Abe's mother, he's a descendant of Abe's uncle-or-something (not specified) but not of Abe Lincoln himself. Anyway as I said it's still interesting. He's still a relative, and that's pretty cool.

So he's distantly, distantly, distantly, distantly related. I'm sure there's a president out there who's that far removed from me too.

Pretty sure I'm not, unless my one Irish great-grandparent has some lineage in common with Lincoln, which considering they migrated to Mexico is a long shot at best.

He is actually not a descendant of Lincoln, because the Hanks name is a different woman than the one related to Lincoln. Tom Hanks and my husband both have the exact same descendants going back to the 1400's in England. Check out Findagrave.com and go backwards thru Tom's family and you will see what I mean.

Her grandmother on her mother Geraldine's side was Oona O'Neill, daughter of the 20th century American playwright Eugene O'Neill. Eugene disowned his daughter for marrying Chaplin; she was 18 and Chaplin 54 at the time of the marriage. Oona and Charlie stayed married until he died in 1977, and they had 8 kids, including Geraldine.

Basically, his mother, Cheyenne Brando, was mentally unstable and convinced her half-brother, Christian to kill Tuki's father, Dag Drollet. A rather sad beginning, but Tuki seems to have endured it quite well. He looks a lot like his grandfather did when he was young.

    Charlie Chaplin & James Thiérrée

    Charlie Chaplin & James Thiérrée

The English comic actor Charlie Chaplin has a grandson James Thiérrée who is a circus performer. It's evident that Chaplin passed on his ability to entertain and make people laugh to his grandson, too. Thiérrée is known for his work on Chocolat, Les illusions, and Vatelis.

If I'm not mistaken, James Thiérée is Swiss and not English. I am also wandering if it is not him I've seen in concert in a bar in Neuchâtel (Switzerland). I remember the artist was a grandson of Charlie Chaplin, not bearing the same lastname, but I can't remember the name.

Rumor is that Clark Gable and Cary Grant would meet up after Christmas with all the monogrammed gifts they weren't interested in and swap them. I really hope that is true! I love the image of them having a drink and swapping monogrammed bath towels and stuff.

Clark Gable III died of an fentanyl related overdose this year in 2019, he was terribly attractive. And a pretty good host, surprised he didn't carve out a place for himself on the silver screen.

Clark Gable was known to suffer from depression, even before his wife's tragic death. I wonder if his grandson, here, who died from an overdose, was self medicating. So sad.

    Gregory Peck & Ethan Peck

    Gregory Peck & Ethan Peck

Gregory Peck was one of the most popular film stars from the 1940s to the 1960s and as it often happens, his grandson Ethan Peck has also become an actor. It seems like Ethan inherited both his grandfather's looks and talent. He is known for his roles in In Time, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and Nothing Left to Fear.

His grandson is very handsome, but I don't think any actor today (I could be wrong) can come close to Gregory Peck's humanity and gravitas. One of his sons died fighting in Vietnam, and Peck was a pacifist. You can read him speaking about his son on youtube. Heartbreaking.
