Folks Online Are Losing Their Patience Explaining These 40 Things Over And Over Again
InterviewHave you ever had that moment when someone asks you a question you’ve already heard a million minus one times? And, finally, it’s time to give that million-th answer and you don’t feel like the day’s lucky winner at all?
Well, this list is just for you, because people have gathered to talk about all of the questions that make them roll their eyes and that they’re fed up with answering by this point.

Just because you don’t understand science, doesn’t make it not true.
And just because you believe bizarre theories does not make them true (looking at you, flat-earthers and covid-deniers).
Yup. I know someone who thinks science is a religion or a cult. Tried asking if they were thinking scientology, the cult organization. Nope, just science. They think science is all unproven theories and no scientific facts are evident, but believe everything in the bible is factual and written by god. I would rather wash dishes than get into that conversation again.
The validity of your beliefs is not proportional to how "intensely" you believe them.
Ie your faith doesn't make your nonsense true.
Load More Replies...Also, science is not a opinion, it's a collection of conclusions based on observations and measurements within a controlled system.
It is the methods of studying physical things.
Load More Replies...But I did my research! There was a meme on fb that said science was wrong. I'm gonna go ahead and believe that, it's more credible.
This. The incredible number of people that believe surfing fb or the internet, and viewing YouTube videos is "research."
Load More Replies..."The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." - Neil DeGrasse Tyson "Facts are stubborn things." - John Adams
That "freedom of speech" doesn't mean you get to say what you want, whenever you want, in whatever forum you want, without consequence.
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. It is also not a blanket "everyone must allow you to say whatever you want": it's a restriction on the government from making gag laws
I noticed it most often gets misused by people who very clearly absolutely do not want YOU to have freedom of speech - just them. It's just another bullying tactic to try and shame you into shutting up and not arguing with them.
Freedom of Speech is the right to criticise your Government without fear of repercussions. It isn't the right to broadcast your views about anything to everyone.
Going through this with my current employer now. According to them, sexual harassment is protected under the first amendment.
My favorite are the people who love to spew racist, sexist, homo, and trans phobic nonsense and when you judge them, they whine about freedom of speech but they insist anything actually positive, and empathetic is “shoved down their throat” and “woke” (like it’s a bad thing)
It means if you say stupid s**t, people get to lash you with their freedom of speech too.
Freedom of speech is just that only. You have the ability to speak, but be wise where, when and topic.
Depression is not “just being sad”, and depression does not equal weakness. F*****g tired of battling this stigma.
I am a gen x aged American man who served in the military and has a career in construction. Both very “masculine” with the attitude of “suck it up” I started to struggle with depression and rather than dealing with it I let it consume me because I was too proud and it ruined a lot of my relationships including my marriage. Now I talk openly about it at work on a jobsite and do not feel any shame and hope that I can help another person who is afraid to admit they are struggling.
When I suffered with depression the best way I could describe it was the absence of emotion. Nothing seemed to trigger any kind of emotion. Therapy & Mindfulness worked far better for me than antidepressants. For fellow suffers, I wish you well.
exactly, for me it's mostly this weird numbness. Interestingly, antidepressants are working much better for me than mindfulness, go Zoloft
Load More Replies...Oh yes. There are times I wished I could be "sad". Sadness is an emotion. It passes. Depression for me is more like emptiness, pointlessness, futility...and it invades *everything*.
Me too. I understand what you mean. I try to explain to people that ask that when I was at my worst with depression sad or angry days were the better days. Because feeling something felt better than not being able to feel anything at all. Feeling nothing is isolating and as if your "self" has left along with the emotion. Sadness meant feeling and like a bit of yourself is there for you to grasp on to.
Load More Replies...Interestingly enough it wasn't until after I had mostly recovered from a long bout of depression that I started experiencing periods of sadness. When I was depressed I felt either angry or nothing at all. Being sad every now and then is infinitely preferable because it means feeling something, which means I care enough about life to have feelings again.
'But why are you sad?? You have a beautiful house, children,... ' for f***s sake I know, depression is not some state of mind I chose to be in!
I honestly did not understand this until I lived with my sister. She has major depressive episodes that kind of look like what I thought depression was, but mostly she just doesn't enjoy a lot of things most of the time.
Ugh. Literally had this conversation with my mother 4 hours ago. She was telling me about a conversation she had and this woman's daughter has many of the same issues as I do. My said I should go to this chicks Dr. That she added fish oil to her diet and is perfectly healthy now. No mom. I have chemical imbalances in my head. I'm 47 years old, I've tried adding it to my regime 3 times at the suggestion of my doctors over the years. It was for other reasons but it certainly didn't cure my mental illness or fibromyalgia. It didn't even lower my cholesterol.
Here at Bored Panda, we reached out to the poster of this story, fluffyanimecow, about how they came up with the question, but it turns out that it wasn’t anything specific, just something that popped into their head. They mention knowing that there are loads of things that people are tired of explaining, especially the popular fact that some people can’t accept - everyone is different (and you can’t really do anything about it).
That I'm not lonely or sad, I just like to spend time by myself.
I may be lonely and sad sometimes, but I'd rather be lonely and sad by myself than lonely and sad and surrounded by terrible people.
It’s so much worse when you are around people and they don’t even care if you’re actually lonely. But when you’re alone, then you’re lonely. Never when you’re surrounded by so many people 🙄
Load More Replies...Thiss...Back in highschool teachers would always ask my parents if I were okay. I was just minding my own business people!!!! And kids were pretty mean. Just leave me alone.
If you've never taken yourself out to dinner and movie, you're missing out big time.
There is a nice theater about a 30min walk from my house that is surrounded with restaurants. It feels awesome to simply walk out of the house and not have make any plans with anyone
Load More Replies...I’m not an introvert, I’m an ambivert but it irks me a lot when people assume people who are alone are sad. My classmate today said that if she were running the school then she would “fix the introvert problem “ and make everyone talk more
There is no introvert problem. If there is a problem it is because extroverts expect people to want to be extroverts.

Just because someone is poor doesn’t mean they want *your* money.
Just because someone is poor doesn’t mean they deserve to be abused.
Just because someone is poor doesn’t mean they’re not worthy of help.
Poverty is not by choice. It's by design. As you work and work, save, watch money and still poor. Something is broken.
A while ago, I was in class and we were talking about what world issues did we consider the worst. Poverty was brought up. One of the absolute IDIOTS in my class said, “but poverty is a choice.” I still fume about that.
Load More Replies...Also, just because someone is poor doesn't mean they have to be given rotten, tainted food. People who say "beggers can't be choosers" are the same people who turn their noses up at the poor and throw them garbage then tell the poor person they're ungrateful. Poor people do have and deserve lots of choice and dignity.
I have never met a person that "chose" to be poor. Walk a mile in a person's shoes before you make assumptions about their life or motives.
The US government (corrupt) has created most of the situations in Amerika: The War on drugs, The War on Poverty, The Welfare State, and the list goes on. In ALL cases, it's to make them more $$$ and keep people under control
Society is set up to have those with money and those without. As you may have guess, it is set up by those with the money.
The dreadful thing is that no one needs to be hungry or homeless or be without medical treatment. There are enough resources to go around.
The amount of money that a person owns does not define someone's character.
That AI-generated content needs to be regulated now, it’s already getting out of hand
Did you read that story about the navy drone pilot who, in a simulation, ordered a drone to retreat, and the drone turned around and "killed" the operator, because, and I quote the AI, the operator stopped it from completing its "directive." Also, just watch terminator wtf guys
Load More Replies...Actually the best time was yesterday, the next best time is now.
Load More Replies...AI is happening too fast and we don't have the controls we need. This is dangerous.
Just the fact that students are using it to write papers would warrant regulation. We'll be giving unearned diplomas to a generation of uneducated idiots if it doesn't get handled.
I think the moment public use ai started being able to accurately create human faces we entered the beginning of the end
The problem with saying that is it won't help anything. Do you think China is going to stop reseaching AI? India? Think of the advantage they would have over the other countries who regulate it.
You can have free research but regulations on use of the results. The pharmaceutical industry would be an example.
Load More Replies...Yes. I'm here worried that AI will figure out how to make more AI and take over the entire universe once humans go extinct. Surely I'm not the only one worried about that.
How about just pulling the plug? F**k AI, no one needs it.
Another answer that caught our eye was by Specialist_Humor7751, saying that she prefers going to the cinema on her own. Overall, doing things on your own is something overlooked by many people.
There’s a huge difference between being lonely and being alone. Just as being introverted doesn’t mean that you can’t be social, being extroverted doesn’t dictate that you can’t be happy with your own company.
And being comfortable being alone has its perks - you can comfortably discover things about yourself, explore hobbies, and recharge your social battery.
Why you should care about your fellow human beings.
That "nobody wants to work!" is only half correct - nobody wants to work 60 hours a week for poverty wages just so they can afford to live.
Nobody wants to feel they are not worth enough to deserve a fair return for their skill, sweat and time. Show some respect you are not better than someone else, we are not cheap slaves.
And it’s not the suits at corporate who are really making the money for the company. It’s the low paid frontline workers who are the real backbone and moneymakers.
Load More Replies...Almost everyone wants to work with something. Just not the soul-sucking grind to put food on the table.
THIS!! Most people aren't lazy just deeply unmotivated (by our jobs), yet we continue to work hard keeping our heads above water in this f*d up system.
Load More Replies..."Jobs Americans just won't do" is the cruelest, sickest, meanest lie ever said. "Jobs Americans just won't do for $7/hr" is what is meant.
I worked in quick serve and saw people working two jobs and still qualifying for government benefits. The worker isn't who we are subsidizing, it's the multi-million/billion dollar corporation we're subsidizing. They should be paying enough for the workers to have food, shelter, healthcare... if the company can't afford to pay its workers a living wage, they shouldn't exist.
From what I've heard (and I kind of believe it), Walmart gives the welfare number to their hires so they can get on food stamps and health insurance.
Load More Replies...These are also the same people who aggressively go after customers demanding at least a 40% tip. I don't even want to use delivery services or go out to eat anymore because of it. Maybe wages should be higher for certain jobs, but the aggressiveness of tipping culture has gotten out of hand, and I was in the service industry for almost a decade. tipping-cu...34e392.jpg
Is this a greed thing though or is it because minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation? So people need a 40% tip to make up for that shortfall.
Load More Replies...Yes that is true. But if you want to eat. You have to work. It also means you choose between roof, utilities or food. Because someone decided for profits over people.
Some people also like to feel useful. It's not always about money. (Edit: yes, it's USUALLY about money)
Load More Replies...Nobody wants to work for the benefit of employers who are terrible people.
What is that picture, it's amazing, the colors, the light, the shadows
I feel like it’s an lgbtq+ flag or something. Take away the white and It’s the Ukraine flag. I dunno. It is really beautiful

Women’s vaginas don’t get permanently stretched out because they have had multiple sexual partners. Absolutely sick of explaining female anatomy to idiots who spread that nonsense.
You could fit the typical male understanding of female reproductive anatomy on a Post-It. Sadly you could also fit the typical male understanding of MALE reproductive anatomy on a Post-It. There's a lot more going on in both cases than the external bits!
Also, the overwhelming majority of women don't want a gigantic penis. The length of the vagina maxes out at 4-8" (10-20 cm) when women are aroused. Personally, I like my cervix where it is; I don't particularly want it shoved up into my throat.
Man, dudes with cervix slammers never know what they're doing. They act like we should be honored to be around such a wonder.
Load More Replies...I love stumping those idiots by asking why they think having multiple partners allegedly makes a vagina loose, but having sex many times with the same partner doesn't.
Women are now wooden boards along with shoes and cars apparently. The list is starting to get out of hand.
Load More Replies...Especially when argued that having an equal amount of sex with only one partner somehow wouldn't hypothetically stretch a vagina.
Also women can't control when they get their periods or how heavy their 'flow' is, no matter how inconvenient it is. I once had an ex call me selfish and accuse me of deliberately trying to ruin our holiday because I woke up with my period on a day we had planned to go to a waterpark, he pouted all day and refused to listen to me until I had enough. I packed my suitcase and was trying to go home early before he finally let me explain, then still called me a liar and started yelling at me, so he got dumped then and there. Having your plans ruined by horrible cramps and PMS is bad enough without others being a**hole about it!
Strange, but these people never believe that male genitals get permanently stretched out because they have had multiple sexual partners. But of course they have so little data to go on.
Well, we know who is spreading that nonsense, it is the dudes with the big trucks, big belt buckles, carrying guns around and have tiny little peni.
The world is round, you simple minded f**k
I want to see a TV show, like the Amazing Race, where Flat Earthers set off to find the edge of the world and finally document it for the whole world to see.
Load More Replies...According to the philosopher Billy Corgan, the world is neither flat nor round but is in fact a vampire.
Even the ancient Greeks knew the world is round, 2500 years ago.
That is true. And even the Bible says that the Earth is round. Isaiah 40:22 uses a Hebrew word that probably means sphere, though it has been translated to circle. That was written around 700 BC.
Load More Replies...If the Earth was flat, by now cats would have pushed everything off the edge.
Who would even try to explain this to a flat earther? They are a lost cause
The worst thing about flat-earthers is that they believe that they are smarter than everyone else, and that people who don't believe that the Earth is flat are stupid and ignorant. But flat-earthers are suffering from psychoses, and most of them because they have been smoking cannabis daily since they were teenagers. They are literally incapable of seeing reality.
Very Well Mind shares loads of things that you can do all on your lonesome, from going to restaurants to traveling and visiting museums, once you’ve set your eyes on it.
But let’s return to Specialist_Humor7751! We reached out to her to talk more about her experience doing it.
She first got into it about a year ago, when she really wanted to see Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. From then, she started going to the cinema solo more and more, recently seeing Across the Spider Verse.
Truth is, she was never one to talk during movies, so her plus movies alone was a natural match.
“Going with someone to a movie I’ve been wanting to see for years and them talking during it wouldn’t make the experience fun for me.”
Just because something offends you doesn’t mean it’s gotta go.
Be offended all you want, see who gives a c**p. Grow a spine and use all of your brain. If we took away everything that anybody found offensive, the world would vanish.
Especially considering that most of the time they’re just making up b******t to get offended about. Getting offended for the sake of getting offended—-all for nothing more than to get the attention they seem to crave.
Load More Replies...Ricky Gervais had it as: just because you're offended, it doesn't mean you're right.
This is a *very* generalized statement that needs context. For example, I find child and animal abuse extremely offensive, and if I had the ability, I'd definitely eradicate it. I also find the color lime green to be mildly offensive, but I'm not gonna get my knickers in a twist about aunt Jackie's lime green going-to-church hat.
Well those two first specific things are also illegal. So not being offended by them would be a tad weird
Load More Replies...Needs clarification. This post can be both interpreted as "Banning books and repressing minorities can't become legitimate just because conservatives are offended by them" and "It's my FREE SPEECH to use racial and homophobic slurs you sensitive snowflake, I won't yield to your WOKE AGENDA."
I just had an argument with my mother yesterday when she said that "all this woke stuff is getting out of hand" because the Cleveland Indians have been renamed/branded as the Cleveland Guardians. I tried to explain that they were #1 using a race/culture as a mascot, and #2 they were doing it incorrectly because the symbol was a caricature of an Indigenous Person, not an Indian. She argued "it's not a Hindu Indian!" like somehow, using an Indian from India would somehow be wrong, but using an indigenous person is not. She argued, "it's a baseball team, for goodness sake!" If it's a baseball team, then WHY DO YOU CARE ABOUT THE NAME CHANGE?! It's not even a team she follows!!!!! She has fallen victim to being angry and upset about PCness, even when it doesn't affect her in any way. It's quite sad. The people screaming "you need to stop being so offended by everything!" are most often offended by the changes made. It's just a ridiculous cycle.
You should hear my family from Redskin country in the suburbs of DC. Good grief. Yes, I grew up there and am a fan but couldn’t care less about the name change and I’m a big NFL fan.

That when I say I’m not ever having children, that I’m not ever having children. Not that it’s an opportunity to tell me how/why/when I’ll change my mind.
I don’t understand why some people think it’s so important to want to have children. Not everyone does and that’s okay. Just mind your own business.
"When you meet the right person, you'll want babies." I've made it to 70 and I guess I never met the right person.
I have know since I was a kid myself that I did NOT want kids. I'm the oldest of 6. My parents split when I was around 11. We were really poor after dad left. Food stamps and welfare. It sucked. And I knew I didn't want kids. When I was younger (late teens and twenties even early thirties), people (especially men) would tell me I had to want kids! It was ridiculous! I wrote up a (very long) list of all the reasons I didn't. I kept it in my purse, so anytime someone started giving me bs about it, I would wip that list out. I'm now 51(married 28 years). And I am still very glad I never had kids!
I have a co worker who went through a similar childhood, had to rely on churches, food banks, etc to survive and doesn't want kids for that exact reason. She's afraid of her kids suffering if she ever finds herself in that position again.
Load More Replies...The Texas legislature just proposed a bill that would give homeowners property-tax deductions for having children. If you pop out 10, you get 100% off. Because, due to generational wealth and the post WWII New Deal federal housing loans that were only offered to white veterans, homeowners in the US are predominantly white to the tune of 88%. It's to combat that stupid "replacement theory" c**p that the conservatives are so worked up about.
YES! Seriously, I hate it when adults tell me I will want to get a child someday. No, I don't want a child. I want a successful career and a cat and lots of books.
The thing that bothered me hearing this when I was younger was that they couldn't care less if you said you'd never marry. You needed to have children but not necessarily a partner to help with them
"I've learned from the mistakes of others. Your parents, for example."
Just because you don't see what harm your actions cause others doesn't mean there's no harm done.
This is a major problem with social media. People say all sorts of hideous things to and about individuals or communities that they wouldn't say in a face to face encounter. Partly because they don't have the courage to say it in a live situation, but I think it's also partly because cyber bullying somehow doesn't feel "real" to them ("It's only words", "It's just my opinion") and they are distanced from the consequences.
This is also a psychological phenomenon, when you can’t see the human face, your emphatic responses don’t activate when you act like an idiot. You also don’t get any emotional feedback, like if you upset somebody in real life. The same applies to road rage, to your mind they are just cars, not other people.
Load More Replies...Exactly. You don't get to decide if your actions or words hurt someone.
Ugh. Also people who act like jerks and then say "I meant well/was just trying to help, so you can't be mad." Often it's by being condescending, unnecessarily bossy or sexist. Uh, yes I can. I don't care what you "meant", you displayed obvious bad behavior and crossed a line that shouldn't be crossed. Stop trying to explain it away and learn to stop.
Harm or hurt feelings, there is no distinction between the two these days?
Oh geez-this! I was bullied as a child, I’m 57 now and still feel the pain they caused, creeping into my life, at unexpected moments
Specialist_Humor7751 prefers going out to cinemas as it’s a way for her to get out of the house more often.
“Ever since Covid hit, I’ve gotten more isolated, and hopping on a bus and going to my local theater helped me a lot.” All the people around her being just as excited as her makes the experience even more immersive for her.
If you’re needing that push to get out and visit a theater on your own, she has this to say: “Don’t worry about what other people think of you. If you’re enjoying yourself and you’re happy with your alone time, then other people’s opinions shouldn’t matter."
I am not a recovering alcoholic, I just don't enjoy alcohol 😀
Yes! I cant' sand it! There are million reason to not drink, stop tring to convincing me that alcohol is good!
Load More Replies...Same here! Alcohol doesn’t taste nice. I’d rather save my calories for eating something yummy
Oh, you just have not found the right drink. Here, let me get you whatever the person offering me their drink is drinking. Hear that one often. On the other side I once had a friend tell me he never saw someone have so much fun without being drunk. Added bonus: I actually remember having all that fun.
Me: "I'm going up to the bar. Anyone need anything?" Friend: "I don't drink." Me: "Ok. Can I get you soda, juice, or water?" It's not difficult. No one owes you an explanation for why they don't drink.
Imagine if it was something else.... Want olives in your salad? No thank you. Why? I don't eat olives. Got a problem with olives? No. Is it your religion? No, I just don't like the taste of it. Come on man, just have one. I've had one before, I know what it tastes like, I don't like it. Just one man, I'll leave you alone then. NO! Wow...okay...someone has some real olive issues around here....
What gets my goat is when you say, 'No thank you, I'm driving' , even if you don't drink and they turn around and say 'One isn't going to do you any harm'
I think I am the opposite of an alcoholic: I like the flavour not the drug. loving the trend to have alcohol free beer - although English style is not there yet the lagers are good.
Any type of diet, plants, or hocus pocus voodoo isn’t going to cure my cancer. It’s a chromosome switch so unless they can switch my chromosomes back into the right places, it’s not happening!
Totally agree. When I was fighting my cancer, I got SO much advice. I learned variations of "thanks for your concern, I have faith in my doctors and the plan we've worked out". I REALLY hated the "You know there is a tea/pill/food that will cure cancer, but they are holding it back to make money".
You should totally check out my insta. All you need to do is cut out gluten. /s

Insulin dependent diabetes can't be reversed by diet. You can't get it from eating too much or too many sweets. I have been asked that way back when. I have an organ that stopped working. I know that personally.
I'm bipolar.
To people that naively tell me "everyone is a little bit bipolar"
*Long drawn out sigh*
No, no. I can assure you, they are not.
I've lived with this illness for many, many years. It's not a mood swing, a*s holes.
What kind of rat bastard would even SAY such a thing? I’d go apesh*t if I heard that, I’ve got close friends living with it and NOBODY gets to fυcking invalidate their fight like that.
Load More Replies...same thing with other disorders such as adhd, autism, ocd, anxiety, ect
Hell yeah. How many times I've heard people say 'everyone is a little autistic'. Shows how little they really know.
Load More Replies...The DSM-5 criteria for a bipolar diagnosis are very, very specific. Referring to someone as a "little bit bipolar" not only demonstrates complete ignorance of what the disorder entails, but is as ridiculous as saying that someone has a "little bit" of cancer. You either have it or you don't.
Bipolar is a very difficult disease to live with. It takes a lot of strength.
Just put it this way: I have bipolar and I also have diabetes. If I could get rid of/cure one of them, it would absolutely be the bipolar. It ruins your f***ing life!!!
Load More Replies...I think there is a general lack of education. I for one didn't really know what bipolar meant until I just looked it up. The same it true of many conditions I hear about but don't necessarily fully understand. However my lack of knowledge wouldn't lead me to say something like that.
"everyone is a little bit bipolar" or its cousin "my OCD is kicking in". People have no idea how uninformed / naive they are. Makes as much sense as "I feel a little bit of amputee kicking in". People who think/say things like these comments ... don't have a leg to stand on.😉
Correlation doesn't equal causation.
However, if you are looking for a cause, then correlation is the best place to start. Looking at unrelated data rarely gets you anywhere.
Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has millions of deaths a year. Earth is the only planet in our solar system with birds. Unrelated? I think not.
Load More Replies...Correlation: 100% of all who ever ate lettuce before 1900 has died. So lettuce is toxic?
...and everyone who drinks water dies. I know you've heard about dihydrogen monoxide. It's poison.
Load More Replies...Correlation only equals a starting place for research to check it out.
One of the most turbocharged issues in today's society is based on correlation implying causation...wrongly. A significant percentage of mass shootings involve the use of so-called 'assault rifles'. The resultant narrative, driven largely by politicians, suggests (or even insists) that banning those types of weapons would reduce the number of mass shootings. There's certainly a correlation between assault rifles and mass shootings but considering mass shootings can be (and have been) committed with other types of firearms, the 'causation' part of the equation isn't there. Correlation v. causation - understanding the difference - is a critically important part of any scientific or statistical analysis but politicians, activists and media tend to just ignore it as a matter of convenience/expediency.
This made me think of this webpage. So Funny! https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations

That being deaf really means, I can't hear you at all. All the shouting doesn't help me to hear you.
I’ve worked in a lot of jobs that entail dealing with people. When someone indicates they’re deaf, or I’ve met them before and know they’re deaf, I have always made sure to lightly touch their arm to get their attention, and to directly face them, not to rush my words, but speak clearly—-not loudly, but clearly so my lips form readable words for them. It’s really not difficult to adjust to someone else’s needs for the few minutes you’re interacting with them, ffs.
I may be wrong on this one, but with someone shouting, is more difficult to lip read?
That's right. Just speak normally. Can always ask if they want you to slow down or speed up. The key thing with disabilities is to ask the person what they need and want.
Load More Replies...I’m picturing sign language in all capitals to be putting your hands one inch from someone’s face while signing. Lol
Apparently, very big, exaggerated signs are SL's version of shouting. While funny, being that close wouldn't help at all because SL needs the whole upper body - not just hands. (Though an argument could be made for fingerspelling)
Load More Replies...Actually, being deaf does not mean "I can't hear you at all." It means "I can't hear you well enough to make out the words you are saying." Most people considered deaf have some ability to hear, the same with most people considered blind.
And that if deaf people get the opportunity to have an implant, they often don't WANT the implant, because they feel good about themselves the way they are (and why shouldn't they?) and don't see being deaf as a handicap. A lot of them feel full, and they are. Also, a lot of them want to continue to belong to the deaf community they have always known.
Or someone being blind meaning that they're also deaf. I have a friend who became blind a few years ago and she told me that people yell at her all the time, or talk slowly to her as if she's mentally challenged. Her hearing is of course better now, so I can't imagine how terrible that must be.
It is a myth that your hearing magically improves when you go blind. You just rely on it more and get used to using it more effectively. Just as deaf people don't magically see better. They are both just as prone to needing hearing aids (blind people) and glasses (deaf people) as the rest of us.
Load More Replies...I'm just sitting here, enjoying all the yelling and glad it won't wake my husband up (at least he's only deaf in one ear (benign brain tumor 25 years ago)).
That just because im a woman does not mean I have to have kids or that I even good with them.
Or like them. And having kids of your own does not mean you automatically like other people's kids.
I'm a momma....2 amazing kids.....I can't STAND kids out side my family..... Mine cool.... His cool....grands, also cool..... Everyone else's kids imma call the zoo
Load More Replies...I lucked out with my family. I mean it sucks but both maternal and paternal sides have a head matriarch and both can't have kids; because of this noone in my family has ever pressured or even made comments about anyone having kids. Both aunts are tough old ladies that worked their āsses off to be successful and neither take shït from anyone. They're actually great rolemodels and I'm so fortunate to have them in my life
I like kids and I'm great with them. I was a professional nanny and I loved it. But you couldn't pay me to have kids of my own. With your own kids you can't say goodbye at the end of the day and leave them with someone else. :)
And doesn't mean you're worthless to society if you don't have them. Tbh with the rise of crappy parenting and cost of living and carbon footprint, I'd argue you're less worthless if you don't have kids lol
Many years ago, had a female therapist tell me I was better with children than my husband (at the time). I said, no, I did not have any more experience with a newborn than my then husband. She did concede the point, but what makes me more experienced?!!! Just because I am a woman?
My rule is observe how the kids respect their parents, and how the parents treat their kids. That will be a good indication of how tolerable it be to interact with the kids.
Women/men who decide not to have kids just because they can get my respect every time. Too many unwanted children out there
45 here. I decided long ago that I'd not have children due to the horrific abuse I endured from my parents. I didn't want to take a chance, and I'm happy with the decision.
That rebooting a computer actually fixes most f*****g problems. We can also check when the last time you rebooted so stop f*****g lying to me Kathy!!!!
I've asked people to reboot their computer and they turned off the monitor, and back on. smh
Also, logging off and back on again, is not the same as rebooting.
Load More Replies...Not this Kathy! The first time I heard “Unplug it, count to ten, and plug it back in” was about 1985. So I’ve known about that solution since before you were a twinkle in your daddy’s eyes, OP.
Thank goddess my mother doesn't read BP, lol! Can't count how many times I've said, "Have you tried rebooting it yet?" when she calls me in a tizzy. And, frankly, it works a LOT.
It doesn't help that I.T. people treat everyone like idiots. Turning the tech off/on is the first, second and third thing I try BEFORE calling the help desk. Also checking to make sure it is plugged in. I also do that before calling.
This exactly! I'm familiar enough with electronics to know that's the first troubleshooting step, besides checking the power and connections. The tech people can skip those steps and go on with something else that I can't do that might actually help!
Load More Replies...Forgive my ignorance (I’m fairly technologically illiterate) but what does rebooting mean? Turning it off and on again?
Essentially, yes. though the requirement to do so can vary between devices. For any electronic device that you can easily turn off and on again/restart, it's always worth trying first.

just because someone say something you dont like or disagrees with you isnt gaslighting
I don't understand how the word gaslighting is used these day, check out the movie that originated the term. Please.
"Gaslight" 1944 film starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. A classic.
Load More Replies...Gaslighting has various forms of manipulation and all have the end goal to make someone think they're going crazy, question their sanity/memory/logic. Disagreeing is just not agreeing.
Gaslighting: to manipulate (someone) using psychological methods into questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning.
Or bullying! I get so sick of hearing people being called bullies because they don't agree with someone.
Conversely, gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse and NEEDS to be taken seriously when it does occur.
Gaslighting is that term/jackhole behaviour ... that is being used completely incorrectly due to 'trendiness'. Seriously - come on. "I think that teacher you like is a jerk" - NOT gaslighting.. it's called difference of opinion. "That teacher who assaulted you did not assault you, you are making things up and you are crazy" (and the assault actually, in reality did happen) - THAT is gaslighting.
Having the right of way doesn't exempt you from responsibility. Just walking (or pulling) out into traffic and expecting everybody to see you, perceive you, and be able to stop in time is a good way to get hit by a bus.
Are you in the right? Yes.
Does it always matter? No. Physics will always win.
My dad used to be a bus driver and he taught me this. He said that having 'I was right' engraved on your tombstone wasn't as useful as you might think.
My mom said the same thing. She always told me she would put, "He had the right of way" on my tombstone.
Load More Replies...There's also the other extreme, people who think because they have the bigger vehicle, they always have the right of way. I'm looking at you giant pickup truck that thinks the yield sign doesn't apply to you.
Just yesterday I watched a semi trailer narrowly miss a guy who rode his pushbike across a pedestrian crossing. Ironically they were both in the wrong. I think the semi driver was *more* wrong because the speed he was going there was no way to stop. And just after the pedestrian crossing there was an intersection where he had a giveway sign and he just blew through that too. If the cyclist had been two seconds slower he'd have been dead, and if a car had turned out with full right of way it'd have been t-boned.
Load More Replies...This goes for cyclists as well. Just because I'm de facto the perpetrator because I'm in a car doesn't cancel out that you'll 100/100 times be the one in a bloody mess
I agree. I both drive and bike ride. When you are on your bike, you need to pay attention! No listening to music, listen to traffic. A bike won't hurt a car. A car can kill you!
Load More Replies...You may be right, but you also must exercise your sense of self-preservation.
Same with crosswalks! Yes I have the right of way but I want to make sure that car turning sees me before I just confidently walk out because I have the right of way.
I had a friend in grad school who would hit the crosswalk as soon as the light changed, because he "had the right of way." That may work in some places, but not L.A., where three cars at least will run through each red light.
Was driving around the middle of Philly last night, and nearly killed 5 different pedestrians because none of them looked at the light before they tried to walk across the path of my vehicle. I'm glad I keep alert, and keep my head on a swivel, when driving.
The people in parking lots who just assume that because the pedestrian has the right of way that all of the drivers will agree. Look around.
Parking lots are pandemonium's. There's cars coming from behind, ahead and pulling out this way and that. It's impossible to pay attention to everyone.
Load More Replies...Poor people are not poor because they want to be poor
Are you sure. I'm having loads of fun deciding whether to eat today and walk to work or not eat and ride the bus.
What? Fox News told us poor people are eating lobster and filet with their food allowance and driving around in new Benz's on their newest Iphones! You mean they are making hard sacrifices and pinching every penny they can?? Begging for adequate child care from loved ones so they can work and scraping together meals each night? Praying that they dont have health issues they cant afford to treat? Cant be!
Load More Replies...Or that they are lazy, stupid or otherwise complicit in their poverty. People are poor because society hasn't provided them with enough resources (like education, healthcare, economic opportunities) to NOT be poor
As someone who has been poor and briefly homeless, it's a hard climb to get up. When you're poor, you tend to look poor. No one takes you seriously. People think you're not educated and unwilling to learn. People stand there thinking about all their assumptions about what sort of bad decisions you made. Doors start closing based on those assumptions. Your self-esteem and dignity starts dipping, and you end up getting moments of feeling despair. If you're trying to be optimistic and happy in your circumstance then people think you're on drugs and/or not taking your situation seriously at all.
Capitalism and individualism, and the doctrine of free-will, are to blame for your situation. Most people who are poor have had something happen to them that knocked them down, and it was most likely systemic (eg no free medical care).
Load More Replies...There's a key word in your statement, "people". They're still people and should be treated as such. The amount of hate the poor get is astounding to me!

That just because I'm Black does not mean that I'm an expert/ the go-to guy on all things African-American.
Seriously.
Along those lines - I can like a woman who's not Black because of qualities she has that have nothing to do with her skin color/ethnic background, or not like a Black woman because of the same things. If she's from Mumbai and would actually listen to me argue with someone why Professor X could use his mental blasts to take out a Mark II Sentinel and get me another beer instead of head for the door... why does it matter what her hair color is or where her people are from? She likes me enough to put up with my BS. Why should I look for someone that YOU think I should be with to make YOU happy with 'who should be with whom'?
Just saying...
If you love someone, it does not matter what a stranger thinks. Love is blind
AND you can’t choose who you fall in love with. You can’t pre-order a specific “type”. You’ll find that the “type” you truly fall in love with may not be anything like your “type”, but suddenly whatever “type” they are will become your “type”. I thought I’d fall in love with a white collar guy who wears a suit to work. The man I fell in love with and married is blue collar, and wears work clothes to work BUT he also owns his own company, which provides a necessary service, so he will never be lacking for work. Or money. We have a much better and more secure life than we would if he wore a suit to work at someone else’s company, with the possibility of being laid off or fired on some a*****e executive’s whim.

That most recycling ends up in the landfill.
You are not being environmentally friendly just because you recycle. Reducing and reusing are much, much better for the environment. Recycling is the last resort, only one small step up from garbage.
Glass is one thing that's endlessly recyclable. The only thing they do to glass during recycling is separate out the brown glass (steak sauce bottles, beer bottles, etc.) Everything else is tossed together and melted down to make new glass products.
Load More Replies...This is called "green-washing." It shifts the onus of combating waste and climate change onto you, the individual, rather than the handful of corporations who are actually responsible. However, there are things you can do. The first is to look at your trash and find ways to limit your use of single-use plastics. That means no more sodas or plastic water bottles. I can't believe I have to say this, but I work at a dollar store and see it all the time: no more Styrofoam plates and cups or plastic picnic-wear! What do you think is easier? Mining oil from the ground, shipping it to a refinery, shipping that to another facility to turn it into plastic, molding it into the shape of a fork, shipping those around the world to a store near you, driving there, spending your hard-earned money on it, bringing it home, using it once, throwing it in the trash, and then paying a guy to come collect it and throw it into the ocean or... alternatively, you could spend 5 seconds to wash a d*mn fork.
Yes, you are being environmentally friendly when you recycle, even if only one percent ends up being recycled, that's better than nothing. I can't control what they do, I can only control what I do. I'm tired of a-holes NOT recycling because "it doesn't matter". Grow up, it's not that hard to separate your garbage.
It's mostly plastics that get tossed, paper and metal are relatively easier to recycle. Reducing and reusing will save money, maybe that will help more people pitch in.
And that can vary immensely within countries as well.
Load More Replies...That depends on the country. Over here in Sweden, almost everything is recycled in one way or another and we don't have even have landfills. You shouldn't tell people not to recycle, because then you're only encouraging them to throw everything in the regular garbage. How is that better?
That's not true either a simple google search will tell you that. Only 1% ends up ib landfills but 47% gets recycled. The rest is burned.
Load More Replies...My city recycling facility went to the news to complain about citizens not knowing what to recycle and what not to. It's not that simple when the depot doesn't have the means to recycle most plastics. Apparently glass isn't kosher to recycle anymore. "Too dangerous for our staff".
I have heard that because of its weight it costs more to transport glass and the cost of transport outweighs the what the recycling plant pays for old glass.
Load More Replies...And I am tired explaining that IT'S NOT TRUE THAT MOST RECYCLING ENDS UP IN A LANDFILL. Maybe it's true for the USA, not for the rest of the world. Most EU countries recycle more than 50% of the overall waste production and use a large share of the rest for energy recovery. In 2018 the EU-wide landfilling rate for waste was 23%, with a steady downward trend. In countries such as Germany, Belgium, Austria, Sweden the landfill rate spans from 0,3 to 5% of the overall waste production, and recycling is consistently above 60%
Cardboard, paper, and metal get recycled. Plastic is hard to recycle. In my town, plastic that isn't recycled goes to an incinerator that produces electricity; not really efficient, but it doesn't go to landfill.
The fact that medical facts will always change over time. Specifically with pregnancy. I’m tired of explaining to friends and family members that me drinking coffee or having caffeine won’t [end] my baby, or me lifting something heavier than 25pounds won’t kill me or my child.
It’s simply annoying to literally be pregnant, be actively going through an experience with new medication and be getting updated facts, and have people who gave birth for the last time 15+ years ago tell me I’m a bad mother for doing things my doctor has said is perfectly fine.
Once you're pregnant your family starts treating your body as their property, and that your unborn child is theirs and you can't be trusted to make good decisions. They aren't even concerned about you for you. Any concern they have is about the baby inside you. You'll realize this after the baby is out and any care your family once seemingly had of you is gone. They will not ask how you're doing. They will not help you with your recovery needs. They will not speak to you like a grown woman who has a brain. They will not trust your maternal instincts and updated knowledge on parenting. They will not even take into consideration your sleep deprivation and hormones. Won't come around much, won't check in, won't talk to you about other things going on in the world. I had more lectures and being yelled at than anything. Really didn't help PPD. In fact no one gave Postpartum depression a thought at all.
I'm so sorry that you had to go through that. Your family sucks (sorry)!
Load More Replies...I just had my second daughter. My first is 17 practically every aspect was different. I'll admit it was rather shocking. You think you know stuff as you've been here before but it's all changed
Exactly. When my parents were expecting, doctors regularly prescribed pregnant women amphetamines so they wouldn't gain too much weight. When I had my first, I was told to put him to sleep on his stomach so he wouldn't choke if he spit up. We just do the best we can with what we have, and accept that things change. I'm not going to tell my daughter to go against medical advice just because it's different from when she was born.
I have never been pregnant and have no desire to ever be. I will never tell a pregnant woman what is best for her. That's between her and her doctor.
I had an older neighbor tell me I should not be barefoot outside while pregnant.
Also goes the other way around, if something was allowed years ago when you were pregnant, or if you chose not to be very strict in following the recommendations, please just accept if I say I'm not eating or drinking something, without endlessly arguing is it really forbidden.
I experienced being told a two-week-old baby needed cereal because she was hungry to they need to be on a mother's milk regime until they are six months old. I don't really know what the situation is now, by my baby really liked that cereal.

Not entirely true , a person named Trevor Judge Waltrip lived to be 12 years old, having nothing but the brain stem. Then there is the unnamed French man who lived a normal life with children an all with, well... 10% of his brain.
I recall another one in a recent article where the kid was born with something like 10% of a normal brain and over time it grew larger. Here we go, found it and it was 2% not 10%! https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/boy-born-two-per-cent-20289757

Also side note, while I was reinstalling windows for you, I did not break your toaster and radio on opposite sides of the house, and have no idea how to repair them or your microwave.
K thanks bye
It also does not mean that I understand every piece of software that's on your machine! I'm possibly better at finding out what's wrong with it, but I don't know every way in which it can go wrong.

Remote support is the worst. I hate getting the "I had a problem with..." phone calls. For years now I've been hammering home "did you take a screenshot or a photo of the error message? If not I can't help you." Mostly because I got tired of getting half-remembered "I think it said something about a device being faulty, maybe the video card?" type comments and then going down the wrong rabbit hole because that wasn't actually what the error said in the first place. *sigh*

Load More Replies...People don't seem to understand that IT covers a huge range of areas of expertise and being familiar with or employed in one doesn't automatically make you understand the others. I worked with a lot of software engineers who were terrible at customer-facing IT support because their area of expertise was in building new software components, not digging through the fossils that make up many computing systems. I worked in both tech support and development, but mostly as a web and Java developer - I have no idea how your computer is put together physically or how the OS works, but I will find the strange deeply buried bug from a little used cross linked database table.
YES to tall of that. I once had a customer try to blame me for a printer problem that was completely unrelated to the minor maintenance I did on one of their PCs. It's like getting new tires and then telling the tire mechanic it's their fault your engine is running rough and your AC doesn't work.
Kind of like auto repair - the fact that we did an LOF on your car does not mean we're responsible for the flat tire you got 3 days later.
The vast majority of religious believers cringe just has hard as you do and wish the loud extremist minority would go away and shut up just like you.
Edit Ads:
It's a shame that so many people assume first which religion and second that these discussions don't already take place within the communities of these religions. They do.
The difference is, neither side is smart enough to realize that screaming your belief into the others face will never actually work - it only makes you the savage you think you are disagreeing with.
And this all sucks that I have to edit a larger piece into this because people still want to assume the worst and shout their beliefs into another's face.
I always say that extreme atheists are just as insufferable as extreme religious folks. Both shove their beliefs down your throat. Both act smug and condescending if you don't adhere to their beliefs.
Yeah but extreme atheists don't tend to murder people for no longer being atheist

It’s tiring because I have been harrased and insulted for my beliefs when I haven’t shoved them down anyone's throat. Enough with the stereotypes(and enough with the extreme religious as well)
If you have a problem with your religions fundamentalists, then I would say there is a problem with that religion's fundamentals. The belief in gods is problematic because of the unshakable certainty of cause. You can't even imagine a world in which gods do not exist, the problem being that here you are, in the real world with the rest of us. When real world events need attention, appealing to some god is completely ineffective and increasingly infuriating. Thoughts and prayers are so much b******t when people could do things to stop tragedies. Religion is the excuse for complete and utter laziness. Don't want to have to think, it's god. Don't want to like a particular group, no problem, god takes care of it. Want to be completely cruel to others, not an issue, god says its perfectly fine. Religion is the curse we've inherited from our uneducated ancestors. Those who hold tight to these beliefs are quite literally holding humanity hostage. I think that we can do much better.

My wife has different interests from me, so it often happens that she wants to see a particular movie with her friends. I don't generally have the same taste in films, so my options are, go to the same theatre and watch the same movie (almost never), go to the same theatre and watch a different movie on my own (quite often), they drop me at a nearby theatre because it's actually showing something I want to see; their movie is at a different theatre, drop me at the mall while they watch their movie, or I just stay home while they go out. At no point do I ever feel "less than," or "like she doesn't love me," just because we're not surgically joined at the hip. We're both allowed to have different hobbies.
The difference between race, ethnicity, & Nationality
Frequently confused by people (especially ones making negative comments about minority groups...). Race = physical characteristics such as skin, hair, and eye colour. Ethnicity = cultural characteristics such as language, religion, food and clothing, social customs. Nationality = legal sense of belonging to a specific nation state (citizenship by birth OR naturalisation). However, “race” is a social construct based on physical appearance as there is no significant biological difference between different human races.

There are all sorts of bigotry. Ethnic bigotry these days is carelessly being referred to as racial bigotry. Both of course, are equally bad. Prejudice by, say, the Welsh against my cousins in Belfast might be ethnic bigotry or even religious bigotry. It's probably not racial bigotry because they mostly belong to the same race. That is a valid linguistic quibble, but only that. As you say, spouting "It's not racism" misses the point - or worse, avoids it.

As my granddaughter told me today (she's 26) it's hard being an adult.
friend of mine put $3000 into crypto in 2017 and now has $27000. Not "rich" but definitely was not a mistake. That is 900 percent in 6 years, or 150 percent per annum. The BEST stocks and shares return 10-15% per annum. That's 10x better. So yeah, it depends on WHAT you do with the crypto. The same can be said for stocks. I know people who went bankrupt playing stocks and people who made millions. It's up to you.
A typical crypto day, "I'm rich! I've lost a million! I'm up again! Annnnd, I'm broke!" Bit exaggerated for humorous intent, but it's not far from the truth. I'm on a strict 'eat food's diet. I basically have to eat what I want and do no physical exercise. I have a good metabolism, thank the gods
Actually, diet and exercise in combination is the easiest way. You need to build muscle while you're losing fat, and building muscle will help you lose fat.
The difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
I listened with incredulity and fury when certain people in Congress (guess which party) argued that there shouldn't be a cap on the price of insulin because people with diabetes just have bad eating habits and/or are obese. Although I don't think that any of these idiots actually came out and said, "having diabetes is your own fault," that was definitely the message.
And Diabetes Insipidus (which I have) is nothing to do with sugar or insulin. A fact many medical professionals do not know.
TIL what diabetes insipidus is. Had never even heard of it before. How do you control it?
Load More Replies...Yesss my friend used to always get asked why arent you fat you have diabetes by freaking teachers
Also that so many people think you have to be fat to have type 2 diabetes. That's not at all true.
Unless you have it it's not really something you need to worry about. My brain is so full of stuff already anything in there I don't need just falls right out.
I have Type 1 LADA, or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood. Unfortunately, LADA means I produce little to no insulin AND I am insulin resistant, so I can't use natural or artificial insulin effectively. Unused insulin causes my body to create fat (I don't really know why, I just know it does) so I gain weight regardless of diet and exercise, which increases the insulin resistance, making it worse! Most GPs and even some endocrinologists don't know about or understand LADA so I constantly have to explain to everyone how I'm NOT non-compliant with treatment and that this is just how it works. I didn't cause this; it's inherited and autoimmune. My body is allergic to my pancreas and all the treadmills and watermelon diets and gimmicks won't change it. And it's nearly always misdiagnosed as Type 2. I once reached my goal weight and I still needed 100 units of insulin per day. Misdiagnosed at age 26. Properly diagnosed at 45.
sorry you are having such a frustrating experience. i get similar reactions to adult onset type 1, doctors don't know it exists. i carry a copy of my Anti-GAD antibody labs with me just so i can end those arguments.
Load More Replies...Amazing that so many people think Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are the same. I've even seen ads for something that claims to "cure" both types.
My daughter is Type 1... if one more person tells me she can be cured by diet... I'll do nothing but sigh but I felt pretty BA for a minute.
Hair doesn't grow back thicker after you shave it off.
It kind of feels like it though. Especially after you shave your legs.
If hair grew back thicker after you shave it off, balding men would be reversing that condition by regularly shaving their heads. But they don't, do they?
This is actually quite sad. When I was around 6, I was very, very insecure about having arm hair. I asked to shave it, and my mom said no because it would grow black thick and dark. It would've saved younger me a lot of insecurity if this misinformation stopped being spread.
Well I didnt ask and I just started shaving my arms at 9yrs old as someone told me I had monkey arms. Well at 36yrs old now I wish I had never started. I have to shave every other day for it to be smooth or it is uncomfortably prickly and I am paranoid about accidentally brushing up against anyone or them touching my arm. Alcohol gel is painful on the first day after shaving too, which is a pain as I work in a hospital. Also took YEARS to be able to shave without catching my elbow or the sticky out bit on my wrist and having it bleed
Load More Replies...If hair hasn't been cut, it tapers to a point and looks thinner. When you cut it, it gives the impression of being thicker. I had this happen when my hair grew back after chemo. I initially had blonde baby hair, that gradually darkened and thickened after it had been cut a few times. Thereafter it remained the same, at least until it started falling out due to old age!
A hair is conical, so when shaved the remainder is the thickest part, hence it appears to grow back thicker. If you want to get rid of it, best wax, remove the whole hair. And remember kids, hair removal is a choice, do what you feel fits best for you.
As I was long the hair on my head other hairs decided to take their place...on my back, in my ears, ON MY EARS, etc wth is that about
Nobody needs your permission to record/photograph you in public. I used to be a security guard, and the amount of people who think this is astonishing.
No, you don't need a release form for that, you can't sue them if they "put you on YouTube," etc. You have no expectation of privacy in public spaces.
****Edit to clarify. I'm talking about the USA. Laws are different in other countries.
In USA depends on the state, age of the person and where pictures taken
This is a question I have had many arguments with others, including photographers. If you are in a public space or visible from a public space you have no expectation of privacy since anyone walking by can see you. Anyone can take your photo. Photography in public areas is only restricted in a few government locations such as military bases. Age is not a consideration. Of course this does not mean one might be confronted when taking photos. I have been. Releases might be required by a magazine or other outlet but that is not a legal requirement, just a business decision made by the outlet. Just think about all those celebrity phots published without consent.
Load More Replies...Not all places used by the public are public. Places where people are in vulnerable states do have a right to not be filmed. For example, a gym locker room, a mall washroom, a medical waiting room, hospital. Private facilities that allow the public to use are actually not public spaces, and some places do have policies against filming strangers. Commonly these are gyms and public pools.
In Canada one does need permission to post pictures and or videos of people.
However: a place of public accommodation is not the same as public property.
Telling it as a worldwide, universal thing is very, very wrong and can land people in bad situations. Just as an example, in my country you can film and take photos of people in public for personal use, but the moment you publish them -outside of a very specific set of circumstances- you are supposed to either have their authorization or to make them unrecognizable . If you have a security camera filming a public space, you have to ask for a permission by local police and have a sign stating the use, the person responsible and the contact information in case authorities want to audit the fair use of the recording. It's straight up a felony to film without permission in some places where confidential data are handled (think a military installation, or a clinic, or even schools). Publishing images or videos or people in public in a condition that degrades their public image is definitely prosecutable: youtube pranks to unwilling homeless people have already landed people in jail.
This is another case where, just because it's not illegal doesn't mean you should always do it. Just cause you can legally take my picture doesn't mean that I want you to, or that I am not allowed to tell you off for it. It's rude, and creepy and can be dangerous. If you go around taking pictures of random people without asking, eventually someone is going to get mad, and that someone may not be a particularly reasonable person afraid of going to jail for assault.
Yep. Here in my portion of the States, there's a new trend going around called "First Amendment Audits." People go into public libraries and film the staff to see what sort of reaction they get. Kind of like a cross between poking the bear and that old kids' game 'I'm Not Touching You!' PITAs.
As a speech and language therapist, I am responsible for somebody's safe swallow to prevent aspiration pneumonia or choking. There is more to my profession than teaching a child to stop stuttering.
My son had to have a speech therapist at 9 months old to help him learn how to transition to solid food. He had delayed oral motor skills so he had "feeding therapy" but the person who helped him was a speech therapist
My sister has begun seeing a speech pathologist because she has just got disability funding. One of the things she wants to work on is being able to drink things properly.
This was never explained to me. My daughter went to a speech therapist. When she was an infant she would do this startling and weird thing that sounded like she was choking. She was diagnosed with a Global Developmental Delay. Not much more was looked into and anything I had mentioned was listened to, so I may never know if that was something that was treated. She's an adult, now.
This is true I saw a speech therapist for months. Had pneumonia 8 times in 2 years. Told my wife to make arrangements because I wouldn't last another month. Went to a speech therapist. Been 2 years 8 months since I last had pneumonia.
Flossing is associated with healthy teeth and gums.
Get into the habit of flossing. It is totally worth it. Once you're used to flossing every day, if you skip a day your mouth feels totally icky, like when you skip brushing. And floss is super cheap.
Stress can increase tartar - just found that out this week at the dentists.
Does anyone NOT know this? People don't not floss because they don't know, they do it because it's hard to remember/get in the habit (or in my case, depression makes dental hygiene really difficult)
Asking for advice but how do you floss if you have braces? I’m worried for my teeth because I haven’t figured it out in 2 years and I don’t want them to rot
Don't people have to see an orthodontist fairly regularly when they have braces? I imagine they'd be able to help you out with that.

Going up a tax bracket doesn't result in a pay cut.
There are those cases where a raise in pay will disqualify you from some government assistance programs, resulting in a decrease of available income (both before and after taxes.) But otherwise, no.
I wonder if the people who think it does live in the US or something because I've never known it to be the case in the UK
So, some people think that overtime pay means their entire income for the year is taxed at a higher rate, which isn't the case. Only the money that's over the line is taxed at the higher rate.
Load More Replies...There are situations where you are just on the edge of a tax bracket that an increase in income will mean less take-home pay because that increase tips you over into a higher tax bracket.
IN YOUR COUNTRY. So sick of “facts” from people who think their system is a global system. Where I live, the first x amount is tax free but once you exceed it, you pay tax on the whole amount so we have to ensure people get a big enough increase to cover the tax liability.
You have to demonstrate that. So in Australia the TFT is $18.2 K, you pay %19 on amounts more than that, not all of it https://www.superguide.com.au/how-super-works/income-tax-rates-brackets#Australian_income_tax_rates_for_202324_and_202223_residents
Load More Replies...Get an accountant, they're way better than the seasonal pop ups and not much more in cost. Conditionally they can be cheaper. I pay a flat rate for my federal and state taxes ($165), sometimes I work in 5 or 6 states a year, still the same price. The seasonal groups want around $100 to prepare each state. An accountant will also get you the best return
Before computers, and a simpler federal tax rate we had a large range of tax brackets and a small raise might bump you into the next bracket, causing a small loss.
No really. You have 1000 dollars, taxed at 20%. Equals $200 tax, net pay $800. You have a rubbish 2% pay rise, meaning you now earn 1020 dollars. The next tax bracket is 50%. You now pay 210 tax (1000 at 20%, 20 at 50%), net pay 810. Ooh look, a pay rise
Load More Replies...Only the extra pay that's in the higher bracket is taxed at the higher rate. If you get a raise, you will still received the same take home pay PLUS the raise taxed at the higher rate. The only way your take home pay would go down is if the raise was taxed at more than 100%

That it's perfectly legal to walk around carrying an axe, even in the middle of the night.
Depending were you are. It might be legal in some countries, but not others. In the UK for example, it's illegal to do it during the day without 'Good reason'.
No, not in the UK. If you have no legitimate use for it, or are carrying it "for protection" then it is deemed an offensive weapon and is illegal. A landscaper owning and having a machete is very different to a 19 yr old on a street corner carrying one. It's a sensible law.
It's sensible as long as the police are reasonable at judging it. I have an allotment and a billhook and I don't worry. Were I black...
Load More Replies...U.S. here. This may be legal, but it doesn’t mean police can’t approach and say hey buddy, whatcha got there…
And if you're a sensible person the first thing you do when the police ask is put it on the ground and step away. Then explain.

18 years of reinforced "go to college and you'll get a good job" growing up has led to an entire generation of adults who are on average more educated than prior generations when the number of jobs that would actually require those educations have not really increased in any significant numbers. So now more roles that don't actually need the education can still ask for it and get candidates with that education requirement applying because they can't get anything else. Add on the fact that tuition rates have been increasing at a much higher rate than inflation since at least the 80's while Uncle Sam happily foots the up-front costs and you wind up with a generation of people with significant debt making less than their expected income that can't afford to pay it off. Don't forget to add in that public schools don't (or at least didn't about 15 years ago when I graduated) have any mandatory classes to teach about loans in general, student loans, interest, etc so kids signed up for these loans with only a very vague idea of what they were signing up for. And finally, even if Biden's debt forgiveness passes (which I hope it does, as it will definitely help people), it will still do nothing to address the underlying issues and actually solve any problem. It will just put a bandaid over the issue for another year.
My school has a math class that you can take that teaches about budgeting, taxes, loans, etc. Unfortunately, it’s an AP class, and you can only take it senior year IF you’ve already taken four other math classes, which means one year you have to take two instead of one. Edit: Should’ve specified. American public high school
At my school they have a separate after school class for it, and they teach it in intro to agriculture

The simplest way to speak about it is a credit card bill, you've already spent the money, you just have to pay the one who covered the loan. The budget is what they pass to say what they can spend money on, the debt ceiling is an artificial encumbrance that stops us from paying the bills, that gets used as political leverage.
Meanwhile it can take weeks to get a handyman or appliance repairman. Trade schools should always be an option just like community colleges. Same type of fee structure.
In my school, the middle school students learn how to calculate profit, loss, discount and tax along with simple and compound interest
Digital Art does not mean the computer draws for you. Whenever I show someone a portrait I did and say I did it in photoshop, they practically roll their eyes and it makes me want death
I get that a lot. My daughter is an art student and works with both digital and physical media. If people comment on one of her pieces and I say it was digital art, I can tell some people thinks she "cheated" and it didn't require the same skill as drawing by hand. Newsflash: she IS drawing by hand, just using digital tools.
It's like, a novel's easier to write when you're using a word processor instead of a quill and ink. But nobody complains that writers have it too easy now.
Load More Replies...Yeah I do digital art and I’m always worried Bc it’s not the same as using a real pen and paper I’m really bad at actually drawing so I’m scared people will say I didn’t use as much effort because my app can make my lines into smoother lines and that stuff
I saw somewhere that you need to be less worried about the feedback you get from others anonymously because you don't know who they are. This one girl was upset someone was rude about her playlist (I think) and she looked them up later and they had just been arrested for homicide. Imagine being sad because a literal murderer didn't like something you did. Your art takes skill and unless your app is google images, you're the one putting in all the work. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise (of course though you have no way to know I'm not a serial killer giving you bad advice so be cautious)

That "socialism" isn't taking your freedom or money, it is about the fair provision of services that society needs to function. Services that are far more efficiently arranged and paid for by taxes than individuals just when they need it.
