The expert, who helps people pivot into new roles, told Bored Panda that employees should think about changing careers "when they’re bored, feel like they’re undervalued, or feeling like work is causing their mental/physical health to suffer."

If I don't want to take a break, I won't. I'd rather finish what I'm doing.
Unfortunately that's not how most places of employment work. They pay for your time, not the amount of work. And finishing faster will just get you s bigger workload. If you can finish your tasks fast and slack off the rest of the day without your boss finding out and giving you extra work, then by all means.

Currently in a new role leading a team that has this culture embedded. Week four being on the job...slow, small steps to get them to take breaks. FFS, some of them don't even want to load Overtime. It doesn't make you special, or make you look like you can work harder. It exhausts you, lowers your potential and causes more errors and stress. take your damned breaks
Welcome to teaching!!! I love it, but the highly effective teachers in my school work 7:30-6:00 four days a week. We're paid for the hours of 8-3:20. Not to mention the time and money we spend on weekends. I love the job. But a pay increase would make a huge difference to high quality teachers. We use data and science to change kids lives. Our salary doesn't match the level of research and practice needed to be a good teacher.
And at least in the United States the level of education needed to be a good teacher doesn't really match what a lot of teachers get (I'm speaking specifically in regard to learning how to teach children with attention and learning difficulties because that's what I've researched and experienced first-hand as a student). Teachers need more training and probably more resources for this.

There is something even more weird where I live. Do bear with my rant as a lot of women are on the wrong side of this toxic office culture. I will not name the place or country but i am certain a lot of people will guess correctly. So in this place, men and women are expected to do overtime. So a lot of men will literally stay 5 or 6 hours after office. Not that they work a lot, just pass their time. Because of this, women are also expected to do the same, otherwise it will show on their paycheck. However, they are also expected to be at home on time to cook meals for their family, because heaven forbid, if a man steps into the kitchen, that would be a travesty to mankind! A lot of women have to choose between family and work, and most choose family. And that is not the end. The moment that quit working, they are marked as "dependent" on their husbands. So people, when you work overtime (exceptions apply), please understand you are simply encouraging a toxic workplace culture.
Yes! If you're the sort of person who doesn't take breaks, remember: You're not taking breaks for you. You need to take breaks for the next person in your position who will be held to the same standard as you. That person deserves breaks. (And you do too.)
That person isn’t your responsibility though. Some people want to just save their breaks and go home early. Or do tomorrow’s work so it’s done and out of the way and they can sit on Bored Panda or Reddit for the rest of the day. Nobody owes anyone a standard.

As a person that works seasonal i have to say that i absolutely hate people that work without off! I don't care if you don't get tired in 6 months! It's inhuman to work 6 months straight without a single day for yourself and you are also responsible that the employers are not hiring us who demand one off per week!!! Don't support this culture!!

Yeah, I have a hard time getting restarted once I stop. Not everyone is a round peg.
So just take your break at a different time, when your done with your task. Or add it to your lunch time. Or leave early. But TAKE the time.

Or you have a work culture of roundabouts. Sometime you put in extra time and then take it off for earlier Friday, longer lunch or if applicable a higher bonus. Not all companies treat their workers as slaves.
It annoys me so much when someone says "I don't really take vacation" Like "Cool beans Sally, I'll see you in two weeks"
Once for the work Christmas party, I was with one of my boss and another team's boss, and they were discussing how they have too much vacation days and they don't know what to do with it. So I looked at them dead serious and told them they could give me their extra days cause I new what to do with them. The look on their faces was priceless :D

That is already an expectation in most of the workplaces, they love employees with zero personal life and practically ready to live in office.
Whenever I orient new nurses I stress the importance in planning breaks as much as anything else they might do in their day. It’s ridiculous when people see themselves as being better because they are martyr-ing themselves.
Get a life. Some people want to get through all the work so their day goes by easier and faster. Don’t be such a clown. Nobody owes you laziness.
It's not laziness to take your breaks. It's better for your mental health. It prevents burnout and promotes creativity. Also, the standards you set impact others. Do the world a favor and set healthy ones.

I had so many of these, they were all nice people but I couldn't help but to hate them.
"I think it’s rare to feel certain [about career change], especially when your financial stability is on the line but it’s important that you always advocate for yourself, even when it might not feel 'great,'" Kierra noted that it’s difficult to know if your decision to switch jobs is objectively right. However, you have to do what feels right for you, even if things seem scary.
Kierra said that open and regular communication and consistently checking in with employees is what managers should aim for.
"Asking at least biweekly will allow them to learn how each individual on their team works and what is important to them in their career. This can help the manager to adjust what goals and tasks the people they manage should work on… to get the best out of their role and to maximize their career,” she told Bored Panda.
In Kierra’s opinion, job satisfaction is very subjective. However, things like a higher salary can help motivate workers to do better.
"Most would probably say money [increases job satisfaction] since it’s needed for survival, but there are many people who are out there doing what they love even though it might not pay well. In reality, I think people want to work a job where they feel appreciated and heard in all aspects (from career goals, innovative ideas, compensation, etc)," she said.
And when the whole house is burning, they ask you why didn't you say something earlier. When you say you did, they ask you for e-mail proofs. Then they make you admit the whole thing was your fault.
This is because the US is no longer a country, it's a corporation and the almighty dollar is king.
The expert added that managers and the companies themselves ought to be the ones helping motivate their employees and keeping them interested in their jobs in the long run.
"Perhaps one should try to find roles where there’s lots of opportunity for growth and internal transfer in the event you would like to try something else," she mentioned what the employees can do themselves.

Haha, the whole 'commitment to working' thing. I work with a guy who spends 16 - 20 hours a day at work. He's SO proud of it and thinks the company likes it too (I'm sure they do). Sadly, if he'd just shut his mouth and stop socializing, he'd get everything he does all day done in about 4 - 5 hours and be a happier person.

I got bollocked by the manager of the other office for not recognising him on the phone and asking for his name. The reason I didn't recognise him was that I had only started that morning, being a temp while the usual secretary was on leave. But he didn't recognise that I wasn't her... And yes, for the whole month I asked him his name, every day. Because my job was to transfer calls to the person I was actually working for with the name of the caller, not to pander to the inflated egos of twats

Yep. I once had a woman go on an absolute tirade that our private business didn't have a Christmas tree in the lobby. It was the weirdest complaint, but she was livid.
I got in trouble for using popcorn instead of raisins to fill one toy for our primates. Popcorn was allowed dont get me wrong, but that toys description said raisins so my f****d up coworker (who tought that was my boss) made a huge issue out of it. The toy was just a log with small holes in it to hide food. You could theoretically put anything that fits inside, from seeds to peanut butter. But no, the example said raisins so I am a monster for puting something else.
And then, you remember it means you are now unemployed and broke... And your secret snacks were still in your drawer.

I don't get why they force us to work in open offices or office at all on jobs that can easily be don from home. My job is software developer, now working from home because of quarantine, but before that they just wouldn't let us to work from home. I lose 2,5 hours in commute each day, I have to get up at 6am, wait for bus in the rain or snow, come home at night hungry and beaten and why? To be in the office? Working at home leaves me more free time, I don't lose nerves and hours in public transport, I don't have to sit in cold office on uncomfortable chair and have coworkers bully me. And I can gladly work longer hours. Why would I need to go to the office? Micromanagement. Stupidest thing ever.
Yup. Mediocre managers are so scared that you're not actually working when they can't look over your shoulder all the time, that they need you to come in. Instead, they could easily implement other ways to check on productivity, like delivery deadlines... If you have your task done in time, you've done your work, and it doesn't matter if you did that on a Wednesday evening of drunk coding or took a whole week of 9-to-5s. Done is done.

The average American business's idea of profit seems to focus on requiring the most work from the fewest amount of people at the least pay for the quickest and largest profit. It's a model that will always implode. The best way to have a successful business is to treat workers like humans, give them paid vacation and personal time off, preferably include profit sharing or similar schemes and close during holiday periods. Try it. See how it changes everything.

Even the pandemic has an upside. While most employers are whining that they can't get staff because people 'don't want to work,' at least a few are recognizing that people don't want to work for poor pay and in poor conditions,' and have taken steps to remedy the situation. Too few, so far--but maybe it'll catch on.
Jeez, I am so glad I don't work in an office or with customers. I'm a baker and I am granted a lot of creative control. I don't make as much money as some office folk, but I love my job.
