The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

Legalize weed across the states, tax it, and use that money to repair the roads. Call it Operation Pothole.

I have 30 years clean and sober. Having lived as an addict and watched newcomers come in and out over the years, I can definitively say ..Nope, Wouldn't work. Addicts will not stop stealing. Taxable means more expensive thus still having a market for illegal drugs that are non taxed and cheaper. Making them legal means regulations that the cartel will just avoid thus continuing drug smuggling and illegal sales. Legalization is a pipe dream. Making it easier for addicts to use NEVER makes the problem go away.

Would this really stop people from stealing though? The reason they steal is to get money to buy drugs and that wouldn't really change if they were legal.

Look into countries where drugs are legalized or decriminalized. Portugal is a good example. It never solves the problems entirely, but overall drug use and related crime goes down.

I agree. There would be soooo much more benefits legalising drugs than the risks. The governments are currently fighting a war they cannot win.

That depends how you define winning, and close inspection of why they ended up creating a war on drugs. The links between organised crime, political power and commercial influence are closer than is comfortable. Legalising and taxing pretty much all drugs seems a no brainer if they were serious about crime and health (perhaps with some initial regulation of where it can be sold).

I live in Portugal. All our drugs have been decriminalised and it’s has significantly lowered drug use. Though we do not tax them and sell them.

It's not just decriminalization that lowered the drug use. The addicts were also offered help (and no judgment) and addiction started to be looked at as a medical (and social) problem that needed to be solved instead of as a moral failing that needed to be punished. At least that's what I've heard

They've decriminilised drugs in Portugal and plow all the money they would use to fight drugs into paying for rehab for users and apparently this is working very well, drug use is lower and so is crime linked to drugs.

But ... less drug addictions, less crimes, less prisoners, less ridiculously underpaid workers in private prisons, less corporate profit ... now we have arrived at the actual issue. Do less capitalism. But yeah, seriously, legalizing drugs (in combination with education and help centers - legalization alone won't cut it) is not a bad idea. Portugal did it several years ago and the outcome was very positive.

So many posts show how ignorant some people are. We need more empathy and understanding. Legalize all of it. It not a cure all to budget problems, but instead of locking nonviolent criminals up, people could get help when they are ready. And if you legalize things like heroin, kids won't all of a sudden start lining up at the needle exchange to try drugs. That's a very silly thought.

Today in many of the states that have legalized medical weed, the states fees to individuals are so high, and the cost of the weed is so high that illegal weed is still much more affordable. So the illegal dealers are still thriving.

DC has the most expensive weed in the country, and illegal dealers don’t thrive really, although some still exist. Most just change their operation and join in the legal game.

Hoe are addicts supposed to hold down jobs, while they are strung out on heroin, crack and who knows what else. Where I work I had to pass a drug test to get hired, if I smoked even so much as "weed", well then I would not have gotten the job. Just because the drug is legalized doesn't mean it is magically going to be dirt cheap.

Also tripling teacher income: estimated number of teachers in the US is 3.5 million according to NCES.gov Now let's say tripling their income means taking it from something like $40k - $60k, up to $120k - $180k. That's something like $80k per teacher then at the low end. $80K x 3.5 million teachers is $280 Billion. That's also far more than what the Federal govt. spends on incarcerating drug dealers.

Agreed with legalizing all drugs and there being health coverage for all. BUT the estimated cost of the US Govt. funding medicare for all citizens currently without health insurance is, by the estimates of any economists, in the trillions of dollars per year. The amount the federal govt. would save from legalizing all drugs is not even close to that level of money, maybe a few billion dollars at most that the federal govt. would save. Health coverage for all American citizens is possible, the trillions it requires can be generated, but only if we're all willing to pay way more in taxes, all but the very poorest citizens that is. Yes, the rich would have to pay more, but so would the middle and working class citizens. That's the only way it can actually happen and be a sustainable idea.

We are already doing this in Colorado. All money has to go to healthcare and education. For our marijuana taxes, 32% goes directly to healthcare (mostly state supported insurance), 21% for other public health/environment (this year was COVID testing in rural/under-supported areas), 16% for K-12 education (mainly fixing old schools/building new ones right now but some salaries), 16% for local government to be used on local projects related to public health or education (detox centers, homeless shelters, afterschool programs, etc), and the remaining ~15% on other projects tangentially related (college scholarships, agriculture research into grow practices using less energy, job re-training for those who were held for 3 strike possession charges and granted clemency. meals on wheels vans , etc). Last year Denver passed a law decriminalizing mushrooms as well.

As H L Mencken said there's a simple solution for every problem,, and it's always wrong. Teachers don't require triple pay; they're quite well paid in most cases. The cartels will remain in business because they'll undercut the legal price and adedicts will continue stealing no matter what. If you want to do anything tp improve education, support charter schools.
