You probably know that humans have only explored about 5% of the world’s oceans. But did you know that the number of viruses in the ocean outnumbers the amount of stars in the Milky Way? Or how about the fact that the deepest part of the ocean stretches down about 36,200 feet? How much do you know about hydrothermal vents? As it turns out, these deep sea vents can reach temperatures of up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. But don’t worry, if you ever made it that far down, you’d likely be crushed by the water pressure before you were melted.

Are these facts starting to make you sweat? If so, you just might have thalassophobia, or the intense fear of large bodies of water. While many of us love a trip to the beach or going swimming in a warm lake in the summer, these places serve as other people’s worst nightmares. And if you’re certain that you’re purely a land creature, you might want to avoid this list. But if you’re interested in exploring the depths of the ocean and the insane amounts of power that water has, you’re in for a real treat.

We’ve gathered some of our favorite posts from the Thalassophobia subreddit down below to captivate, and possibly terrify, you pandas. Be sure to upvote the pics that you find most fascinating (or unsettling), and let us know in the comments how you feel about vast bodies of water. Then, if you can handle even more of these scary photos, you can check out Bored Panda’s last article on thalassophobia right here! Now, cue the Jaws theme song!

This is scary because it's deep and it's inevitable you'll be submerged into the abyssal darkness, not knowing what is in there and you just know the ocean floor is far below.

How big is this wave? People are saying it's a tsunami wave. Is it really? Wouldn't this photographer be dead and the footage be ruined? Okay, so people in the subreddit comments are talking about this being a Teahupo wave.

Click the name by the photo, Friendcherisher, to see the Reddit and more about the photos. The first one is in an abandoned quarry. The second one is Greenland, and the density of the whale carcasses is probably a legacy of hunting slaughter rather than whales drowning under the ice.

The Thalassophobia subreddit has been around since 2013, and it’s become an incredibly popular place since then. It currently has 1.2 million members, and it is home to countless posts featuring how frightening and amazing the world’s bodies of water can be. From photos of creatures that look like they’re from another planet to gigantic waves that could take out entire towns, this online community certainly makes it clear how one could be scared of vast bodies of water. Personally, I’ve always loved swimming in the ocean and taking a trip to a lake, but it only takes one close encounter with drowning to remind you just how powerful water is.

If you’ve never heard of thalassophobia, let’s break down exactly what it is and how it typically manifests itself. Similar to any other specific phobia, Healthline explains that thalassophobia can include symptoms such as restlessness, feeling on edge or worried, being unable to concentrate, irritability, muscle tension, sweating or looking flushed, increased heart rate, trembling, chest pain or discomfort, a feeling of impending doom, a sense of loss of control, upset stomach, chills or hot flashes, and trouble sleeping. In short, it can certainly negatively impact a person’s quality of life.

If you start to feel like you’re experiencing any of those symptoms just by viewing the pics on this list, feel free to swim away as fast as you can. These photos can be extremely triggering. But if you want to combat your thalassophobia head on, exposure therapy is one possible form of treatment. Betterhelp recommends finding a fitting method to expose yourself to what exactly is causing your fear of bodies of water. “If your fear stems from an inability to swim in deep water, you may take a swimming class,” they explain on their site.

“If you’re worried about sea creatures, you may try visiting them at an aquarium. If you’re able to look directly at your fears, you may be surprised by how quickly you’re able to move past them.” It is best to do this with the help of a professional, so today, viewing this list on your own might be a bit too overwhelming. But if you are experiencing discomfort, anxiety or fear around topics such as this, know that you’re not alone.

how many of you on here that keep saying "no" have ever been diving? many of the wrecks that people dive aren't actual shipwrecks, but intentionally sunk to create marine areas for flora and fauna to thrive in, as well as interesting dive sites. i am not talking about the dive sites that are "real" wrecks, because most "real" wrecks aren't divable. Diving is thrilling, magical, and the closest thing to self-propelled flight that i know of. catching a current through a swim-through or cavern or canyon is freakin amazing.

This arc leading to nowhere was actually used to haul mined goods into the ships. There were mines in that mountain. They used machinery and a sleeve to haul rocks and ore into the hull. That was the only way, considering that before that decision all the ore was hauled into the tiny boats and taken to the ships. Many people have drown doing that. That's why they hired a brilliant architect who designed Porta Flavia.

It’s actually quite common to have some sort of fear revolving around bodies of water. According to the Cleveland Clinic, about 3% of Americans have aquaphobia, and many people have other water-related phobias including ablutophobia (fear of bathing), cymophobia (fear of waves), megalohydrothalassophobia (fear of underwater creatures or objects), submechanophobia (fear of submerged objects), and thalassophobia. These phobias often stem from past traumatic events involving water, negative stories about water, their family history or being exposed to someone else with the same fears.

Many times when photos are posted by photographers in certain groups and forums it's helpful to include the settings and camera/lens set up so those who may want to try it can also do so, and helps newer photographers to see how to capture those kinds of shots.

A bait ball is an extremely large school or group of schools of fish, usually swirling around for defense to look intimidating to predators. Sometimes they swarm a resource like plankton, but it's usually for defense. A family member encountered a bait ball for the first time a few years ago while diving, he said it was surreal and actually a joyous experience to marvel at thousands of fishes doing what they do.

It takes me awhile too. The bait ball is large numbers of fish schooling in circles so it’s like a donut shape. There’s a person swimming up through the opening on the right and a pinkish boat bottom on the surface. Does that clarify it for you?

for anyone who doesn't know, Thalassophobia is a type of phobia characterized by a persistent and intense fear of deep water and Submechanophobia is the fear of man-made objects that are submerged underwater.

    View more comments

But aside from people who have a phobia associated with water, plenty of other people are simply scared in deep water. According to Cision, 46% of American adults are afraid when in a pool where the water goes over their heads, and 64% of American adults are scared in deep, open water. This is a perfectly normal reaction; technically, there is possible danger present when we’re surrounded by water so we should be aware of it. It’s important to stay safe and avoid being alone in deep water because you never know what will happen. And if your fear comes from being unable to swim, don’t be afraid to do something about it! It’s never too late to learn how to swim and feel more confident in water. (Not to mention how much fun swimming is!)

I'm very skeptical you'd have enough natural light to take a photo at 195 feet, or be a diver at 195 feet, in 1899... or design a waterproof a camera enclosure (his was wooden), or have seagrass growth. Most seagrass prefers to grow above 10 meters, before a high percentage of visible light has been absorbed by the water. I'd guess this is 33 feet or less. Still, an impressive photo. And a very long exposure.

It's not as simple as it seems. The fosse Dionne is made by a lot of narrow passages and sumps going up and down and turn at 45° in multiple ways. In 2019, Pierre-Eric Deseigne, a professional spleleologist, reached minus 79,5 meters. And it's not even the bottom !

July 31, 2020 (BBC) In an effort to solve this age-old mystery, two professional divers descended into the limestone rocks’ tight passages in hopes of reaching its source in 1974. While navigating the spring’s twisting, tapering chasms, they perished. In 1996, the town hired another diver to attempt the descent. He also died. Then, last October, after deeming the spring too dangerous to dive for years, Tonnarre’s mayor hired professional diver Pierre-Éric Deseigne. Remarkably, he descended more than 70m underground, venturing 370 total metres from the cavity’s entrance – all while filming his expedition. While Deseigne explored territory that no-one had ever seen before, he still was unable to locate the spring’s source, leaving France’s ancient underground mystery unsolved.

I ran a quick search. Apparently it is a very prolific sping, to the tune of 89 to 611/liters per second depending on time of year. Like many water sources, humans built structures around it to channel it and utilize it best. The oldest written reference about it is from 659 CE.

    M. Ellen Dash, founder and CEO of Miracle Swimming for Adults in Sarasota, Florida, told Cision, “People want to know how to swim. Those who learn to swim welcome summertime. But many fail swimming lessons. Unbeknownst to most instructors, the failure is often due to panic during lessons,” she explained. “Many people consider panic a normal step of learning. However, students will only endure this emotional pain to a point, after which they quit. If they return to traditional lessons years later determined to learn, they are often met with the same system that is blind to the harm done by panic.  The cycle continues."

"It's okay to be afraid in water," Dash says. "No one is afraid for a silly reason. Yet everyone needs to know how to swim. Find a program that will work for you."

From what I've read on Wikipedia the dive is not necessarily challenging or dangerous for qualified and well-prepared divers. But the popularity of this spot and its accessibility (it's very close to the shore) attract inexperienced recreational divers who underestimate the depth of the hole (100 m within the hole) and the length of the arch (26 m), whose entrance can also easily be missed. These divers mainly die from drowning due to a lack of breathing gas or decompression sickness, since the time spent at this depth necessitates decompression stops upon ascent (plus those stops need to be taken into account for the quantity of gas brought by divers).

To make it easy on casual scrollers: Rebreather diving is underwater diving using diving rebreathers, a class of underwater breathing apparatus which recirculate the breathing gas exhaled by the diver after replacing the oxygen used and removing the carbon dioxide metabolic product.

Rebreathing was used in WWII as a technique to place limpet mines (magnetised to stick to shops' hulls) so the divers could approach and leave without leaving a trail of bubbles and in silence.

If the idea of getting in the ocean is just too much for you, perhaps we can assuage some of your fears. I consulted this list from Parade that explains why we have no need to hold some of the most common fears associated with the world’s oceans. For example, if you’re scared of sharks, it might be helpful to know that it’s extremely unlikely to be bitten by one. While hundreds of millions of people take a dip in the ocean every single year, only between 70-100 of them worldwide will have a bite taken out of them by a shark. “Sharks’ senses are legendary so this isn’t because sharks don’t know we’re there, it’s because we’re just not on the menu,” says marine biologist David Shiffman. Just so you know, more people are killed by vending machines than sharks.

Given that the ISS orbits roughly 400km above the earth’s surface, it is relatively easy to find places where you are closer to the astronauts than humanity. Almost anywhere in any of the oceans, the Australian outback, the Canadian far north, etc.

Even though outback Australia is very sparsely populated, there are still townships and communities. Kiwirrkurra, considered the most remote community still has a village around 175km away. I’d be surprised if any communities are 400km away from humanity in Oz.

Actually, it’s really tough to go 400 km (248.5 miles) in any direction without bumping into another person somewhere!!! To give you an example, in Western Nebraska, you can go 20 miles between houses in certain areas of the State!! But try to go even a mile without seeing another person and it’s damn near impossible!!! Therefore, I think I can shoot a few holes in your theory!! I’m not trying to p**s you off or anything, just prove a point.

Are stingrays another sea creature that makes you uneasy? Rest assured, their stings are rarely fatal. Shiffman explained to Parade that stingrays are not even capable of stinging us unless we step on them, so if you’re in an area that’s known to house them, try walking using the “stingray shuffle”. Basically, this just means to drag your feet across the sea floor rather than picking up your feet with every step. This way, you’re much more likely to just scare them away than to accidentally end up with a sting.

It *should* be scary if you live anywhere that gets thunderstorms. You don't always hear thunder or see lightning before the rain starts. A friend and I tried to keep swimming in the rain when we were kids and the sitter pulled us out. No thunder or lightning that we could pick up on for about 10-15 min and then BAM. It was like it unloaded almost all its charge at once.

I always hated driving through the Lincoln Tunnel to Manhattan for the same reason. I know it's unreasonable, but it always freaked me out. Was just reading up on this as I have flown over it many times. The tunnel is on the Danish end and it was built that way so as not to interfere with the air traffic in/out of Copenhagen airport. It featured in a very good drama called The Bridge (Bron/Broen) where a body is found on the bridge between Denmark and Sweden, right on the border.

If fear of drowning is what triggers your thalassophobia the most, understand that it is a reasonable fear to have, but there are also plenty of precautions that can be taken to ensure your safety in water. First, it’s important to have protection. Wear a life jacket, and make sure you have friends or family members nearby in case anything goes wrong. Learn basic swimming skills, and don’t take risks by venturing out into deep or unpredictable water. And always be prepared for an emergency. Learn CPR, and swim somewhere that has a lifeguard on duty. By taking a few extra steps and safety precautions, you can have a great time enjoying the ocean. (And if you’re really too nervous, feel free to stay on the sand building castles and searching for seashells!)

Yeah, and nah. That’s just how photography works. Even with “night mode” - it’s not going to have enough light past a certain range to show any detail. So, of course the nicely-arranged rocks in the shallows appear to … disappear in the deeper water. That’s what light and deep water do. In the dark.

It's not as if there are no options if one slips - unlike being on top of a cliff above water.

exactly. this shot plays off of above-water fears as much as thalassaphobia. somehow though, while i AM afraid of heights (like you said, falling has zero options), i am not afraid of depths when i dive, except to respect the hell out of them, and to pay attention to all my dive training.

I know this is a dumb thing but I don't swim often. I don't understand how snorkels work. I see people swimming underwater with them. I thought snorkes allowed people to put their faces underwater but they still had to keep the pipe above water. But I see pics like this where they must have used a snorkel or something. There's no way you can hold your breath that long comfortably unless you are really, really good at it and practice. I literally hold my breath for 45 seconds and I can't go any longer. It would take like 4 minutes just to swim as deep as she is. And she isn't struggling. I mean... maybe there's a scuba tank off camera that she's using but still. I see people swimming underwater with snorkels and I don't get it.

They're usually diving down and holding their breath. The only thing that helps do that with snorkeling gear is the fact your nose is covered by the mask so you don't risk breathing water in that way-- but you still have to hold your breath. You'd be surprised how long people can... when they swim back to the surface you either don't have the mouth piece in anymore or you push all your breath out to force the water out of the snorkel.

Freediving can be a weird extreme sport. Holding your breath for minutes is easy enough for the trained body (not that I can, just know some that could, plus I saw a documentary more than once that covered that), weird how we can condition ourselves and our body (and mind as well for that matter) to be able to endure a lot. Yet at the same time… so many people survived falling multiple floors (I did too, 5 in fact, or 6 if you count the ground as one) and yet some can’t survive falling only a few feet. I’m disabled because of that fall, yes, but not paralyzed (was extremely lucky and had to lay flat for months in hospital) and yet had a friend at that time that was about the same level of disabled after only jumping down from a desk! At least I got what, you can consider in my case to be only a few injuries but for her, they’re huge. she has had to have been feeling so messed up about all that aftermath after merely a few feet. Sorry, went off on a weird sidenote tangent 🙈

I hope this article has not given you a new phobia to discuss with your therapist this week. The ocean is an incredible place, and while we may know little about it, we do know that plenty of people (myself included!) have made countless, wonderful memories by visiting it. It’s good to be cautious, but don’t let fear keep you from enjoying your life. Keep upvoting the photos that you find particularly haunting or captivating, and let us know in the comments whether or not you have thalassophobia. Then, if you’d like to dive even deeper into the world of being frightened by huge bodies of water, you can find our last article on the same topic right here!

An opressing art installation, interpreting the concept of an "infinity pool" in more than one way. Yes, the water depth is given as infinite on the signs. The mirrors just add another dimension, as do the cameras. But can anyone please find the original source? Looks a bit like the "Backroom" series by Gabrielle Salonga, but I do not find this specific image there.

I grew up on Dilworth Point on Vashon Island in Washington state. The point of land we lived on was a very pleasant shelving beach that dropped off straight down only a few yards away from the low tide mark. It’s one of the deepest places in Puget Sound/Salish Sea. We watched orcas fishing there so close you could smell their breath and make eye contact. That drop off was freaky.

This type of stairway is generally built starting at the top of a cliff with the bottom submerged into the water so people can get in and out of the water safely. The water is deep and it would be impossible to climb back out without the stairway to climb. Some people will walk down the stairs to get in and some people will dive off the cliff but the stairway is the only way out. Don't try it if the water is rough. Dum dum dum dum dum dum....

This sounds like one of my like “stress dreams”. It’s not an actual thing, but it’s probably because the artists brain is experience a lot of pressure or stress, and as they sort thru it, usually in the night as they fall asleep, the stress falls on a dream, or more possibly a nightmare. It’s kinda like how the brain works through the stress. Again, i doubt it’s a real thing, it’s just a sort of description and probable backstory that i made for my stress dreams.

My husband and myself were trapped up there while a drunk truck driver drove in the wrong lane at us and many other people leaving two lanes of cars to pull to either side and barely miss being killed. He drove impaired for 23 miles before he was stopped with nail strips. Because he had never had any other offense before he got off with a slap. This was @ 2012 returning from Houston.

Having just sat through four days of rescue efforts for the titanic tourism submersible "Titan", I can honestly say that the amount of signage and foreshadowing that occurred and should have been heavily noted by all aboard that ill fated trip is fascinating. Who pays $250k a piece to sit cross legged in the belly of a largely safety untested submersible, maneuvered by a gaming controller, piloted by the CEO of said tourism company - whose wife is the great granddaughter of two of the most prolific casualties of the wreck you will be descending to for two hours, at a depth that would most likely mean death if anything were to go wrong? Let's not end it there, let's also name the doomed submersible after the shipwreck itself, as that definitely seems like a good omen! Nevermind the fact that your spot opened up because another more experienced diver or two passed on this trip due to feelings of mistrust of the vessels physical capabilities and lack of attention to upkeep.

There was something I remember reading that said the guy who built should have taken advice from James Cameron on building a great submersible that could handle near those depths. According to the article, the guy who designed it didn’t use good materials and he didn’t take anyone’s advice and if you are going to build something that is going to go to a crush depth, you really should spend money on quality materials to protect yourself. Now if he did all of this or not, I don’t know because I’m not in that world, but on Reddit, some people were confirming some of this information. Sad really.

Remarkably, “only” 46 lives were lost in this accident with the then MV Stockholm. The Andrea Doria was only three years from her launch in 1953 at the time of her sinking. But the Stockholm has had a far more storied career. Launched in 1948, the Stockholm is still in service (as of 2023) - still as a passenger ship - but now known as the MV Astoria. She’s the world’s oldest passenger liner.

It’s not really scary, only natural,if you don’t take care of your vessel, punch a hole she’s not a vessel anymore, just a weight, find something that floats and swim to it,in the Marines ,I did not do well in swimqual, had to do a lot of push ups for that but after that I taught myself to swim, every stroke there is, was determined that I was NOT gonna drown because I couldn’t swim, those DI’s that day convinced me,God Bless them, and every harsh ,tough, hardass body bruising tactic they used, nowadays they can’t,and we’ll lose a lot more Marines.I was on a lot of ships and love the ocean,a harsh mistress, but, she loves her survivors! The Swedmarine: "Well, I...I suppose I could probably rustle up a Daim bar or 2. Why?" Divers: "This is just kind of the point the one Swedish fairytale we've ever read goes horribly wrong."

I think we need to reevaluate what the term “mutant” means. Since Sci-fi exploded into existence everyone has had their own version of what a mutant is or what it should look like. Most people think of something horrifying to the eyes, stuff of nightmares. Which is really unfortunate. Cause it’s the same as calling different human races mutants because they evolved to different climates. Which let’s face it, sounds incredibly racist. The indigenous of the Himalayas have evolved to be able to breath easier at a high altitude, compared to someone who wasn’t born there, but you don’t hear folks calling them mutants. So why is it okay for us to use harsh sounding terms when it comes to every other species on this earth?

Hell, *I'm* technically a mutant in one generation bc I was born with an extra vertebra in my neck! The stuff of nightmares, or a Marvel superpower, it is not - just one more impediment to being able to sleep on planes, lol. But when I use that word, ppl's kneejerk response is, "But *you're* not a mutant!" & I'm always like, "Oh, but I am. I'm just not *a freak*. There's more to mutation than being an inbred hillbilly in a horror movie or the 3-eyed fish from The Simpsons, my guy."

I once had a shower thought about how cool it would be if we were able to temporarily drain all the oceans and map out the entire ocean floor and then just put the water back. And then it quickly dawned on me that it would be much more eerie and creepy rather than cool.

Shipwrecks remind me of graveyards (as it's not completely inaccurate). I also kind of worry about all those dusty old maps, the ones where they depict sea monsters here and there throughout the waters? I'd hate to think what would happen if those weren't added "just for decoration". Yeesh. Not it, and so much nope. I remember Subnautica quite well and I'm NOT willing to go through an irl scenario of that! D:

Most of what we know about the ocean floor's topography was pieced together from gravity data gathered by satellites. While useful as a starting point, the resulting spatial resolution is about two square miles (5km). By comparison, topographic maps of Mars and Venus have a resolution that's 50x more detailed.

Yep, the water in the “river” has a much higher sodium content than the surrounding sea, making it denser, so it all sink to the bottom. The ocean is extremely interesting just not my cup of tea.

Had to look it up… A dry dock is a narrow basin or vessel that can be flooded to allow a load to be floated in, then drained to allow that load to come to rest on a dry platform. Dry docks are used for the construction, maintenance, and repair of ships, boats, and other watercraft.

Hey, we're the "sunshine state" for a reason. Doesn't mean we don't get horrible storms, hurricanes, tornadoes & the rest. That's just a pic of a bad day. I've driven through the Skyway several times, but never in bad weather. *ALWAYS* wonder how people manage, because it's a little scary even in sunny days. Google it for better pics. Ditto for other Bay crossings, even closer to the water, only shorter.

Neutrinos are so small they barely interact with anything. We have to have the sensors deep and most of the time in water to hopefully attenuate them to a detectable speed. Most neutrinos shoot straight through the entirety of the earth without interacting with a single atom
