50 Frightening Pics That Make Us Want To Stay As Far Away From The Ocean As Possible (New Pics)
You probably know that humans have only explored about 5% of the world’s oceans. But did you know that the number of viruses in the ocean outnumbers the amount of stars in the Milky Way? Or how about the fact that the deepest part of the ocean stretches down about 36,200 feet? How much do you know about hydrothermal vents? As it turns out, these deep sea vents can reach temperatures of up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit. But don’t worry, if you ever made it that far down, you’d likely be crushed by the water pressure before you were melted.
Are these facts starting to make you sweat? If so, you just might have thalassophobia, or the intense fear of large bodies of water. While many of us love a trip to the beach or going swimming in a warm lake in the summer, these places serve as other people’s worst nightmares. And if you’re certain that you’re purely a land creature, you might want to avoid this list. But if you’re interested in exploring the depths of the ocean and the insane amounts of power that water has, you’re in for a real treat.
We’ve gathered some of our favorite posts from the Thalassophobia subreddit down below to captivate, and possibly terrify, you pandas. Be sure to upvote the pics that you find most fascinating (or unsettling), and let us know in the comments how you feel about vast bodies of water. Then, if you can handle even more of these scary photos, you can check out Bored Panda’s last article on thalassophobia right here! Now, cue the Jaws theme song!

Silent Power Play
Doesn't help that I'm seeing this after waking up at 4am from a nightmare... of course I click on it...
There is a very good reason why I never, ever swim in the ocean. It's pictured above, plus all the funky stuff that nibbles at your feet.
This is scary because it's deep and it's inevitable you'll be submerged into the abyssal darkness, not knowing what is in there and you just know the ocean floor is far below.
The Calm Before Chaos
Mother Nature is a force that's equally awesome and terrifying at the same time...

That is correct, according to the source (click on the name under the pic's left hand corner). There is a link to an awesome video of Teahupoo waves and the surfers who challenge them.

Load More Replies...Click the name by the photo, Friendcherisher, to see the Reddit and more about the photos. The first one is in an abandoned quarry. The second one is Greenland, and the density of the whale carcasses is probably a legacy of hunting slaughter rather than whales drowning under the ice.
Like the elephant graveyard but under the sea... wow. Also this is perfectly terrifying!
The second photo gets dark when you really look at it and then realise how many whales couldn't break through the ice to catch a breath in time 😔
It could be that, or it could be from a whale die off event, or it may be a good hunting spot.
Load More Replies...i can make out, i think, at least 4 individual whale skeletons in this photo, though which type, i have no idea. considering the ice sheet above, I would say is it not a bad guess to say they were trapped and drowned having no air source?
The Thalassophobia subreddit has been around since 2013, and it’s become an incredibly popular place since then. It currently has 1.2 million members, and it is home to countless posts featuring how frightening and amazing the world’s bodies of water can be. From photos of creatures that look like they’re from another planet to gigantic waves that could take out entire towns, this online community certainly makes it clear how one could be scared of vast bodies of water. Personally, I’ve always loved swimming in the ocean and taking a trip to a lake, but it only takes one close encounter with drowning to remind you just how powerful water is.
If you’ve never heard of thalassophobia, let’s break down exactly what it is and how it typically manifests itself. Similar to any other specific phobia, Healthline explains that thalassophobia can include symptoms such as restlessness, feeling on edge or worried, being unable to concentrate, irritability, muscle tension, sweating or looking flushed, increased heart rate, trembling, chest pain or discomfort, a feeling of impending doom, a sense of loss of control, upset stomach, chills or hot flashes, and trouble sleeping. In short, it can certainly negatively impact a person’s quality of life.

If you start to feel like you’re experiencing any of those symptoms just by viewing the pics on this list, feel free to swim away as fast as you can. These photos can be extremely triggering. But if you want to combat your thalassophobia head on, exposure therapy is one possible form of treatment. Betterhelp recommends finding a fitting method to expose yourself to what exactly is causing your fear of bodies of water. “If your fear stems from an inability to swim in deep water, you may take a swimming class,” they explain on their site.
“If you’re worried about sea creatures, you may try visiting them at an aquarium. If you’re able to look directly at your fears, you may be surprised by how quickly you’re able to move past them.” It is best to do this with the help of a professional, so today, viewing this list on your own might be a bit too overwhelming. But if you are experiencing discomfort, anxiety or fear around topics such as this, know that you’re not alone.
Lost and Found Oceanside
how many of you on here that keep saying "no" have ever been diving? many of the wrecks that people dive aren't actual shipwrecks, but intentionally sunk to create marine areas for flora and fauna to thrive in, as well as interesting dive sites. i am not talking about the dive sites that are "real" wrecks, because most "real" wrecks aren't divable. Diving is thrilling, magical, and the closest thing to self-propelled flight that i know of. catching a current through a swim-through or cavern or canyon is freakin amazing.
I can look at this just fine, because there is no way ever I'd actually do that. Like watching skydiving pics. Lovely, but NOPE.
I find it mesmerizingly beautiful to look at. But being beneath the surface and near a shipwreck in real life REALLY is a whole other thing. Brrrr.
I’m kinda just imagining it tipping and falling it the abyss with the person still on it, is that bad?

They used machinery and a sleeve to haul rocks and ore into the hull. That was the only way, considering that before that decision all the ore was hauled into the tiny boats and taken to the ships. Many people have drown doing that. That's why they hired a brilliant architect who designed Porta Flavia.
It's amazing how above water, it looks idyllic, but below water, it looks pretty creepy.

Load More Replies...It’s actually quite common to have some sort of fear revolving around bodies of water. According to the Cleveland Clinic, about 3% of Americans have aquaphobia, and many people have other water-related phobias including ablutophobia (fear of bathing), cymophobia (fear of waves), megalohydrothalassophobia (fear of underwater creatures or objects), submechanophobia (fear of submerged objects), and thalassophobia. These phobias often stem from past traumatic events involving water, negative stories about water, their family history or being exposed to someone else with the same fears.

Sometimes they swarm a resource like plankton, but it's usually for defense. A family member encountered a bait ball for the first time a few years ago while diving, he said it was surreal and actually a joyous experience to marvel at thousands of fishes doing what they do.

Load More Replies...Neither of those phobias but us there a waterlinephobia? Or waterlinedistortaphobia?
Phobia from looking at certain things is a type of Trypophobia.
Load More Replies...for anyone who doesn't know, Thalassophobia is a type of phobia characterized by a persistent and intense fear of deep water and Submechanophobia is the fear of man-made objects that are submerged underwater.
But aside from people who have a phobia associated with water, plenty of other people are simply scared in deep water. According to Cision, 46% of American adults are afraid when in a pool where the water goes over their heads, and 64% of American adults are scared in deep, open water. This is a perfectly normal reaction; technically, there is possible danger present when we’re surrounded by water so we should be aware of it. It’s important to stay safe and avoid being alone in deep water because you never know what will happen. And if your fear comes from being unable to swim, don’t be afraid to do something about it! It’s never too late to learn how to swim and feel more confident in water. (Not to mention how much fun swimming is!)
Old School Deep Dive
This portrait was likely taken in this way given how sharp the text on the placard (which reads “Photographie Sous Marine” or “Underwater Photography”) and the grass at the diver’s feet is. (https://petapixel.com/2016/09/02/worlds-first-underwater-portrait-taken-1899/)
Load More Replies...I'm very skeptical you'd have enough natural light to take a photo at 195 feet, or be a diver at 195 feet, in 1899... or design a waterproof a camera enclosure (his was wooden), or have seagrass growth. Most seagrass prefers to grow above 10 meters, before a high percentage of visible light has been absorbed by the water. I'd guess this is 33 feet or less. Still, an impressive photo. And a very long exposure.
Unexpected Zen Spot
It's not as simple as it seems. The fosse Dionne is made by a lot of narrow passages and sumps going up and down and turn at 45° in multiple ways. In 2019, Pierre-Eric Deseigne, a professional spleleologist, reached minus 79,5 meters. And it's not even the bottom !
Load More Replies...July 31, 2020 (BBC) In an effort to solve this age-old mystery, two professional divers descended into the limestone rocks’ tight passages in hopes of reaching its source in 1974. While navigating the spring’s twisting, tapering chasms, they perished. In 1996, the town hired another diver to attempt the descent. He also died. Then, last October, after deeming the spring too dangerous to dive for years, Tonnarre’s mayor hired professional diver Pierre-Éric Deseigne. Remarkably, he descended more than 70m underground, venturing 370 total metres from the cavity’s entrance – all while filming his expedition. While Deseigne explored territory that no-one had ever seen before, he still was unable to locate the spring’s source, leaving France’s ancient underground mystery unsolved.
But it's not natural, though, right? People built it and must've had a blueprint-type of plan for the construct. May not be around anymore if it was destroyed at some point.

I ran a quick search. Apparently it is a very prolific sping, to the tune of 89 to 611/liters per second depending on time of year. Like many water sources, humans built structures around it to channel it and utilize it best. The oldest written reference about it is from 659 CE.
Load More Replies...Not so much a pit as a cave. You can see the floor not far beneath the surface, but it's the depth of the cave passages that have proven difficult to explore.

M. Ellen Dash, founder and CEO of Miracle Swimming for Adults in Sarasota, Florida, told Cision, “People want to know how to swim. Those who learn to swim welcome summertime. But many fail swimming lessons. Unbeknownst to most instructors, the failure is often due to panic during lessons,” she explained. “Many people consider panic a normal step of learning. However, students will only endure this emotional pain to a point, after which they quit. If they return to traditional lessons years later determined to learn, they are often met with the same system that is blind to the harm done by panic. The cycle continues."
"It's okay to be afraid in water," Dash says. "No one is afraid for a silly reason. Yet everyone needs to know how to swim. Find a program that will work for you."
Into the Blue Unknown
People still pay huge sums of money to climb Mt. Everest, where the death rate is something like 1 in 33. People be weird.
Load More Replies...From what I've read on Wikipedia the dive is not necessarily challenging or dangerous for qualified and well-prepared divers. But the popularity of this spot and its accessibility (it's very close to the shore) attract inexperienced recreational divers who underestimate the depth of the hole (100 m within the hole) and the length of the arch (26 m), whose entrance can also easily be missed. These divers mainly die from drowning due to a lack of breathing gas or decompression sickness, since the time spent at this depth necessitates decompression stops upon ascent (plus those stops need to be taken into account for the quantity of gas brought by divers).
"The Arch in the Blue Hole" sounds like an X rated Space Alien movie.

'Blue hole' is also a name for a specific kind of water feature, also called a cenote, so that might be skewing your results. Blue holes and underwater caves are ridiculously dangerous, so it's not surprising that a lot of these sites have a body count.

To make it easy on casual scrollers: Rebreather diving is underwater diving using diving rebreathers, a class of underwater breathing apparatus which recirculate the breathing gas exhaled by the diver after replacing the oxygen used and removing the carbon dioxide metabolic product.

Load More Replies...If the idea of getting in the ocean is just too much for you, perhaps we can assuage some of your fears. I consulted this list from Parade that explains why we have no need to hold some of the most common fears associated with the world’s oceans. For example, if you’re scared of sharks, it might be helpful to know that it’s extremely unlikely to be bitten by one. While hundreds of millions of people take a dip in the ocean every single year, only between 70-100 of them worldwide will have a bite taken out of them by a shark. “Sharks’ senses are legendary so this isn’t because sharks don’t know we’re there, it’s because we’re just not on the menu,” says marine biologist David Shiffman. Just so you know, more people are killed by vending machines than sharks.

Are stingrays another sea creature that makes you uneasy? Rest assured, their stings are rarely fatal. Shiffman explained to Parade that stingrays are not even capable of stinging us unless we step on them, so if you’re in an area that’s known to house them, try walking using the “stingray shuffle”. Basically, this just means to drag your feet across the sea floor rather than picking up your feet with every step. This way, you’re much more likely to just scare them away than to accidentally end up with a sting.

First, it’s important to have protection. Wear a life jacket, and make sure you have friends or family members nearby in case anything goes wrong. Learn basic swimming skills, and don’t take risks by venturing out into deep or unpredictable water. And always be prepared for an emergency. Learn CPR, and swim somewhere that has a lifeguard on duty. By taking a few extra steps and safety precautions, you can have a great time enjoying the ocean. (And if you’re really too nervous, feel free to stay on the sand building castles and searching for seashells!)

Yeah, and nah. That’s just how photography works. Even with “night mode” - it’s not going to have enough light past a certain range to show any detail. So, of course the nicely-arranged rocks in the shallows appear to … disappear in the deeper water. That’s what light and deep water do. In the dark.

exactly. this shot plays off of above-water fears as much as thalassaphobia. somehow though, while i AM afraid of heights (like you said, falling has zero options), i am not afraid of depths when i dive, except to respect the hell out of them, and to pay attention to all my dive training.
Load More Replies...I know this is a dumb thing but I don't swim often. I don't understand how snorkels work. I see people swimming underwater with them. I thought snorkes allowed people to put their faces underwater but they still had to keep the pipe above water. But I see pics like this where they must have used a snorkel or something. There's no way you can hold your breath that long comfortably unless you are really, really good at it and practice. I literally hold my breath for 45 seconds and I can't go any longer. It would take like 4 minutes just to swim as deep as she is. And she isn't struggling. I mean... maybe there's a scuba tank off camera that she's using but still. I see people swimming underwater with snorkels and I don't get it.
They're usually diving down and holding their breath. The only thing that helps do that with snorkeling gear is the fact your nose is covered by the mask so you don't risk breathing water in that way-- but you still have to hold your breath. You'd be surprised how long people can... when they swim back to the surface you either don't have the mouth piece in anymore or you push all your breath out to force the water out of the snorkel.
Load More Replies...Freediving can be a weird extreme sport. Holding your breath for minutes is easy enough for the trained body (not that I can, just know some that could, plus I saw a documentary more than once that covered that), weird how we can condition ourselves and our body (and mind as well for that matter) to be able to endure a lot. Yet at the same time… so many people survived falling multiple floors (I did too, 5 in fact, or 6 if you count the ground as one) and yet some can’t survive falling only a few feet. I’m disabled because of that fall, yes, but not paralyzed (was extremely lucky and had to lay flat for months in hospital) and yet had a friend at that time that was about the same level of disabled after only jumping down from a desk! At least I got what, you can consider in my case to be only a few injuries but for her, they’re huge. she has had to have been feeling so messed up about all that aftermath after merely a few feet. Sorry, went off on a weird sidenote tangent 🙈

The ocean is an incredible place, and while we may know little about it, we do know that plenty of people (myself included!) have made countless, wonderful memories by visiting it. It’s good to be cautious, but don’t let fear keep you from enjoying your life. Keep upvoting the photos that you find particularly haunting or captivating, and let us know in the comments whether or not you have thalassophobia. I grew up on Dilworth Point on Vashon Island in Washington state. We watched orcas fishing there so close you could smell their breath and make eye contact. That drop off was freaky.
I know orcas have never been documented as deliberately dangerous to humans in the wild, but they're still intelligent and bloodthirsty in the way sharks are portrayed. Sharks are friends. Orcas are bloody terrifying.

Load More Replies...Having just sat through four days of rescue efforts for the titanic tourism submersible "Titan", I can honestly say that the amount of signage and foreshadowing that occurred and should have been heavily noted by all aboard that ill fated trip is fascinating. Who pays $250k a piece to sit cross legged in the belly of a largely safety untested submersible, maneuvered by a gaming controller, piloted by the CEO of said tourism company - whose wife is the great granddaughter of two of the most prolific casualties of the wreck you will be descending to for two hours, at a depth that would most likely mean death if anything were to go wrong? Let's not end it there, let's also name the doomed submersible after the shipwreck itself, as that definitely seems like a good omen! Nevermind the fact that your spot opened up because another more experienced diver or two passed on this trip due to feelings of mistrust of the vessels physical capabilities and lack of attention to upkeep.

I think we need to reevaluate what the term “mutant” means. Since Sci-fi exploded into existence everyone has had their own version of what a mutant is or what it should look like. Most people think of something horrifying to the eyes, stuff of nightmares. Which is really unfortunate. Cause it’s the same as calling different human races mutants because they evolved to different climates. Which let’s face it, sounds incredibly racist. The indigenous of the Himalayas have evolved to be able to breath easier at a high altitude, compared to someone who wasn’t born there, but you don’t hear folks calling them mutants. So why is it okay for us to use harsh sounding terms when it comes to every other species on this earth?
Hell, *I'm* technically a mutant in one generation bc I was born with an extra vertebra in my neck! The stuff of nightmares, or a Marvel superpower, it is not - just one more impediment to being able to sleep on planes, lol. But when I use that word, ppl's kneejerk response is, "But *you're* not a mutant!" & I'm always like, "Oh, but I am. I'm just not *a freak*. Still So Much to Discover
I once had a shower thought about how cool it would be if we were able to temporarily drain all the oceans and map out the entire ocean floor and then just put the water back. And then it quickly dawned on me that it would be much more eerie and creepy rather than cool.
Shipwrecks remind me of graveyards (as it's not completely inaccurate). I also kind of worry about all those dusty old maps, the ones where they depict sea monsters here and there throughout the waters? I'd hate to think what would happen if those weren't added "just for decoration". Yeesh. Not it, and so much nope. I remember Subnautica quite well and I'm NOT willing to go through an irl scenario of that! D:

Im someone who falls between fascination and complete terror. I think it comes from a place of respect. Nature is amazing, but if it's not treated with a level of respect, you'll find yourself meeting Davy Jones.

I was twice deliberately held under water to drown as a child. And now I have even more panic. Yay. (If you ask "Who'd do that?" My sister reallllly wanted to be an only child.)
OMG! I’m so sorry. Was she of an age when she would actually realize what she was doing? Either way, I hope she got help. And you too. How terrifying.
Load More Replies...Thassalaphobia is fear of the ocean. A lot of these are not oceans. Also it is a fallacy that someone with thassalaphobia would be afraid or unable to swim. An awful lot of swimmable water is not oceans.
as a diver i would say i don't have a FEAR of the ocean per se. I have a deep and abiding respect for her. She is deep, powerful, and can kill in the blink of an eye. i DO take all precautions but even then things can go wrong, like in any sport. I saved my bestie (twice) on her first open-ocean dive, and she wasn't even aware of the danger in the moment. it was her ignorance and inattention that put her at risk, NOT the ocean herself. 💙
