We all have strange and irrational fears, but few of us make a living off them like Fran Krause.
The LA-based cartoonist, who we previously wrote about here, has added new comics to his Deep Dark Fears series, and they're just as morbidly delightful as the last batch. Krause has gained a cult following on Tumblr thanks to his knack for illustrating the most paranoid corners of people's minds, and his work is almost entirely based on user input. Some of the comics turn ridiculous phobias into humorous imagery, while others deal with serious trauma.
The lifeblood of the project is how universal it is. It shows the fears that so many of us share, and encourages us to embrace them. Check out some of the latest Deep Dark Fears below, but make sure to leave the light on.

THIS! I always position my bed affixed in a wall and every night when I sleep I always make sure that I am glued to the wall. I am afraid that creepy monsters will grab me by the hand or foot and take me to their dark kingdom. I thought of this even under my bed there is no space for monster to squeeze in because its full of "sentimental stuff".
Monsters under your bed, eh? Must be scarry. Monsters under MY bed? Well, cockroaches equal monsters, so... I make sure to get my mobile devices' charging wires far enough from my bed, to avoid possible climbing up.
Load More Replies...This has always been my fear. But now I know, that if my hand brushes against anything, it's prolly one of the kitty kats.
Yes! Even until now, I will not leave any of my limbs dangling out from the bed. N I always take a deep breath before I bend down to clean under the bed. And it got worst after getting married cause whenever my husband has to go reservist, I'll definitely on one more light in the bedroom. 🙈
oh well at least it's friendly. Maybe it's scared too and needs comfort from you.
Every. Night. If I'm not under my blanket, I feel like monsters under my bed are gonna grab me..
I always thought that octopuses lived under my bed and would drag me under it if any part of my body was outside the bed or cover 🐙
I used to do this all the time Although, it was in Cary, NC (considered one of the safest cities in America... so I didn't feel scared. Nothing creepy ever happened)
I've been having a LOT of dreams like this recently. They're really disturbing. :(
Read something. Look away. Read it again. If it says the same, you're probably not asleep.
In ordinary circumstances, it's the mother's voice calling one's name, a key implicit memory of original Attachment.

Yesterday my husband did not answer his phone or return any of my texts for several hours and I could not go home due to other obligations. I was sure I would come home and find him dead with the cats having eaten half his face. Finally, I texted that I needed him, emergency and then just kept ringing his phone then our home phone until he answered in a panic thinking I was hurt. Turns out he had a headache and turned his ringer off. No one calls our home phone but telemarketers, so he ignored it. I was not sorry at all.
My daughter has epilepsy, she hasn't had a seizure in years but if she oversleeps I feel like that when I go to check on her
Understandable given how fast time flies. Can't believe we're already into Feb for example.
Ahh stop it! Valentine's Day, then Easter is right around the corner...and then I turn 30 in July. Omg
Load More Replies...This is so true, I am 57 and I feel like I am still 30 in my mind, everything is the same as when I was young, other than my body. Once your kids get to be 20 it seems like you become old, like you thought your grandparent were when you think of them. Sad really, I hate aging!!!!
I remember my mom saying this. You know what? Age is just a number on the birth certificate. You are only as old as you feel. :-)
Age is just a number but unfortenatly I have a mirror.
Load More Replies...I agree with Grandma.... I am 47 years old but I feel still like 16...but I know, one day the ol' bast**d "time" will get me
I have this, except it's not so much about physical appearance than habits and personality traits.
Sometimes I fear the karma might pass on to my kids. :( Amitabha. Amen.
I'm more worried about people judging the physical flaws I might ACTUALLY have. Also, the people in these pictures have had noticeably discoloured noses / cheeks / ears, but this is the first one where I'm legitimately worried that these people have frostbite.
great idea. but you gotta prepare for new door every month
Load More Replies...I have so many fears. This is a good way to conquer them XD. Every time I open my bedroom door, I'm doing the same thing. The mirror is sure to smash them if the door doesn't! If there is no last resort... :grabs pepper spray and give them a good helping:
That's stupid, if somebody is waiting behind the door, it will not be on the hinges side...
Ah, there are lots of stupid thieves and burglars out there
Load More Replies...Imagnie the situation: every day, this guy goes home and whats ppl do when they reatch home? Go in ofc xD SO- this guy not just opens the door and walks in normally, he/She is just like: FBI OPEN UP! and kicks the door in 🤣
I must be the reflection protecting myself from the terrible side of life.
Load More Replies...I'm scared of mirrors at night and occasionally through the day. I either think that the mirror me is evil and wants to swap places and trap me in the mirror or that that has already happened and I'm the evil mirror me and the me in the mirror is the real me and stares in reproach at evil mirror me for being an impostor and trapping the normal, non-mirror me inside the mirror. I'll never know if I'm evil mirror me or normal non-mirror me and that is a big fear and makes me uncomfortable. Sometimes at night when I glance in a mirror I think I see evil mirror me (or normal non-mirror me) move differently to whomever is on the outside looking in (or the inside looking out.) I think it's a type of existential dilemma, or maybe I'm just a little bit weird, either way I have given this much thought, perhaps too much. Mirror people frighten me.
Same I hate mirrors sometimes I am so scared I don't go into the bathroom to wash (I am 11 I don't live alone)
Load More Replies...The fear is of being possessed, rather than killed. My mind alone is already too much for my poor little brain sometimes, it would be torture to have another soul trying to hack in.
You can't be possessed because you're already filled up with you! :-)
Load More Replies...I tell myself it's ok because there is nothing u can do if something is going to get you
Comforting to see I'm not the only one who thinks this way.
Knew somebody not so long ago who was certain there was no life after death, but she was still scared of ghosts.... go figure....
I'm afraid that being dead means being conscious, in the dark all alone for eternity in a void, never touching a wall and never seeing a light.
You could have used my technique: behead the dolls and bury the heads in the garden. Just be careful that it's only your dolls and not your little sister or you'll have problems.
When I was young my grandma decided I needed to collect porcelain dolls. Those damned things terrify me, but Grandma gave them to me and I feel like it would be wrong not to keep them, so they are locked in a trunk in the crawlspace with another box filled with rocks on top so that the lid of the trunk cannot open. Then I feel guilty for locking them in the dark, but I can't let them out because they'll want revenge.
What's creepy about being watched in your sleep? Were they angry at you after talking didn't help?
I always thought dolls were creepy, so I made myself an imaginary protector. He was a little dragon, but if I was to be harmed, he was giant
Actually, swallowing spiders in your sleep is a myth. I mean, think about it; why would a spider willingly climb into a larger animal's mouth? Makes no sense.
I think the theory is that we inhale the little ones

Omg my whole life I've thought this!! I even apologize in my prayers when my mind wanders because I'm tired or if I forget to say amen and start thinking of other things... it'd be like butt dialing God and he's on the other end of the line like, "what??" Lol
Lol I think this too and sometimes I fall asleep praying and wake up in the middle of the night and say Amen
I have considered mailing this exact fear to PostSecret before. Apparently I'm not the only one with this fear, lol
Xcellent ! Was about to say the same thune 😊
Load More Replies...I can seldom let the sound of a text go unchecked for this same reason. Quite the curse when trying to drift off to sleep.
I had the same issue, hence I will always checked my phone. Afraid that someone will need my help.
Yeah, well, if she had a phone instead of a smartshit she wouldn't have battery problem, so... it's on her, not you.
I'm afraid I'll die in the middle of a really good book and never find out how it ends.
I'm afraid that I'll die in my sleep all alone in an empty house and no one will ever find my dead body because I had no friends or family members who cared about me. I'm afraid I'll watch over my own funeral and realize no one showed up.
once i was dreaming, that i was dreaming and i woke up in that dream and i told my dad about this, then i woke up for real, i was so confused and asked my dad if i already told him about this xD
Once I was sick the night before. St some point I had a short dream where I was violently sneezing. When my mom woke me up for school I was like "did you not hear me saying that I'm sneezing?" She had been in the room for at least five minutes
Load More Replies...This actually happens to me very frequently. False awakenings suck
This has happened to me many times, and I hate it. It confuses me!
i just had a similar experience. i had a dream that i was lying in bed next to my husband and we were holding hands and chatting like we always do before we fall asleep. it was so vivid and plausible that when i woke up a moment later to let my dog out, i couldn't tell if it was just a dream or if me waking up to let the dog out was the dream. i kind of panicked for a moment trying to figure out if i was awake or asleep.
Your memory is not wiped out. At least not everyone's. My mother had an eye surgery and she "woke up" in the middle of the process. And the doctors couldn't tell, they almost thought they lost a patient, because it took longer for her body to start showing signs of conscience. She could tell us "kids" how she could see and hear them almost panicking over her, and how badly she wanted to shout "I'm alive and fine!". Then she had thoughts of patients in a coma and that were decided for anesthesia.... I'm so glad my mom has been doing fine all these years after that experience and that the surgery was actually successful and her sight was restored.
Decided for anaesthesia, I said? I meant euthanasia... Ups! Guess I'm tired today.
Load More Replies...This fear is in most of us, in fact I had to have my 1st surgery at age of 55 and had a long talk with the Drs about just this. They told me not to worry that they have a way of knowing (brainwave activity ?) I told them I hope so because if I wake up and feel anything I will come back when I die and haunt each one of them forever!! lol
Brainwave and heartrate and bloodpressure and sweating... all signs of people expierencing pain during surgery. A good anesthesiologists assistant knows this (I'm a first year's student and even I know) and makes sure you won't feel any (more) pain. When afraid of surgery tell them you're 15 kg's heavier than you actually are, drink a lot of alcohol and use a lot of drugs. That way they will give you more 'stuff' ;)
Load More Replies...I wope up in the middle of a surgery, I said: it hurts..and remember the doctor said: shut up, and they gave me more anesthesia.
I think that's actually true except your memories aren't wiped out. I've heard that you're actually just paralyzed during surgery but you can hear, feel, and see everything.
sometimes I do it, too. I say something positive to the elevator itself... IDK why.. :D
Same!! I even sing to it sometimes and maybe to the potted plants sometimes
Load More Replies...I'm always worried that I'm going to drop something down the little crack between the elevator and the floor proper, especially these days with all the thin electronics.
According to the latest theories about the universe (quantum physics I think it's) this is actually true. For each choice you make, the universe splits in two, and the other possibility actually happens
If there is infinite amounts of multiversums, each of us dies infinite possible ways in every moment in every imaginable way, and there are universes where we success to avoid every situation that would kill us.
Actually, according to the 'many universes' theory... this is a very real possibility. There's also alternate versions of you that decided not to take the risk. There are others who never went out in the first place. There are others who are already dead from another near miss in your life. >__>
It is all just a big game where if the charecter dies the ones playing us just start again from last checkpoint
Oh yes, the plot to every movie about the rapture. Also, brings up a problem with teaching kids fundamental religious beliefs.
If you set the lighting to the lowest point, the difference is not that big anymore. Actually, I even can't look at my phone in the dark with its settings set on high brightness levels. It hurts too much.
I sometimes turn the flashlight on my iphone on if I'm going to read at night because if this very reason!
I have a similar one except it's the statistic they give you about car crashes. Do I meet strangers and in my head think if they are going to be in a car accident.
Sometimes I worry that the strangers around me might be murderers and I'm just super lucky I haven't been abducted and killed yet.
I think your soul mate is the kind of destiny you create yourself. meaning, there are lots of possible people that you could live a perfect life with, and the person you choose is just one version of your destiny.
Great females are already swamped with messages due to gender roles, so i'm doing the logical thing by waiting for the right one.
What if my reflection gave monalisa smile when I didn't smile at all
Kind of creepy, but I fear that one day the reflection in my mirror will wink back at me...or wave....
So me. My Mum was frightened when I was a child that people would think I was being abused because apparently my head was 'too big for my body' and I would topple over and bruise myself all the time. Thankfully I have grown into my head.
As evident in contact sports where people just drop dead after taking too many blows to the head.

My great great Grand mother used to tell my Grand mother who was still a small child at the time, That fireflies were the flying fingernails of the Dead so that she wouldn't go out after dark...
I haven't wondered this specifically, but I do wonder about secret security cameras.
How about using your ears and voice instead of bypassing inadequate privacy guards?
haha I saw a video of a woman who had the hatch open on her at the top of the escalator. She fell through and died. :( Her daughter was with her and survived because the mother was able to push her to safety. so sad! I have that fear now and try to jump over the hatch!
Load More Replies...That's physically impossible. You should fear it happens when you step INSIDE the elevator, and that it goes up, rather than down (although down is dangerous too). Because those accidents actually do happen. It's just the the door closes first. This is why you always have to quickly press the open door button when you see someone potentially getting stuck inbetween the doors.
I got trapped in an elevator once during a power outage. They pulled me out, but it took some convincing, because I was scared it would turn back on and snap me in half.
I always worry if I step in the small gap of the elevator something will happen and it'll cut my toes off.
After seeing a couple of videos of people being killed by elevators in China, I will never use one again. I have strong legs and will gladly walk up as many stairs as I need to.
At night if I have to walk down my hallway in the dark, I open my mouth so if an intrider sneaks up behind me and clamps his hand over my mouth, he cant muffle my scream. Also, I can bite.
Even worse. In the last row, the intruder just gets you. In the middle and front rows, the indruder is too exposed to attack you. They'd disturb other spectators the moment they'd stand up to get in action.
Load More Replies...Sit in the very last row so the wall is at your back. That's what I do. Hopefully then you'll be able to relax and enjoy the show
Depends how your cinema is built. Korean cinemas have plenty of walking space behind, so people have easier access to their seats.

Big bang is just that moment when a god having his mind blown *mind blown*
once I woke up from a dream that (somehow) spanned a good 4 months of my life and I actually thought everything that had happened in it actually happened and I kept thinking stuff had already happened, like one of my friends flying to another country
Oh my, this one reminded me of that certain time when... It's a long story, but I wanna tell it, so, I'll try to keep it simple. Sometimes in S. Korea, the siren goes off as part of a military training (because technically, the war is not really "over", right?) for citizens to run to the shelters. Nobody cares about it nowadays, and people just ignore the siren, but the first times I heard it, back when I just moved to the country, from my Safe European Home, it was too hard to pretend I'm not freaking out. One day the siren went off while I was taking a daily nap home alone. Recently it has been a good while of not hearing those sirens.
The fire alarm went off in my building at 2am but no one heard it. We woke up to a fireman and our super breaking into our apartment to see if we were okay. Thankfully, there was no fire, just a malfunction of the alarm.
Load More Replies...In autumn my grandmother woke up hearing an annoying beeb-beep sound. First she thought it was the dryer, then she realized it was a smoke detector. One of the two. Only the one upstairs, because the other one in the basement was already molten. Fortunately she is fine.
The fire alarm went off in my office a while ago and we all just kept working. After 2 or 3 minutes I told everyone "I think we should go outside now". My boss said, "it's just a fire drill, take your time". I reminded him we don't have fire drills so we all calmly exited the building. Luckily maintenance had accidentally set it off while working on some wiring. Otherwise we would have all burned while listening to the world's most relaxing fire alarm.
That moment when you don't have a fire alarm in your house so if there's a fire and you're sleeping you're screwed
Im also afraid of that there will be a fire in my house when im asleep
Well the thing that makes alarms that effective is the repeting sound so if you kan sleep through your alarm in the morning it should be made more simple like beeb beeb...fourthermore if a differant alarm sound and it is repeting you can't help but wake...that is if you are not dead or something...
He takes submissions from other people then illustrates them.
Load More Replies...My parents use to say that everytime when we drop food or drinks on the floor/table, it happens because the dead people are asking for food or drinks.

No it's not. I get it to and I know I'm not weird.... lol
Load More Replies...This is a good story to teach kids (and adults) to be careful what they say, beacuse every word has an impact on reality.
I am a mom, and based on experience I can say that children learn more from a good example, respect and love and there is not need to traumatize them for life to "prove a point".

i had that dream too a long time ago. i was in the kitchen holding an tv remote. then i saw a ghost of a little girl and i tried to scream and call my parents but nothing came up so i smashed the remote to wall to make noise, and it worked .when my parents entered the room the ghost screamed and then she disappeared

my friend wanted to know if there was any glue left in the bottle so she looked up, it dropped and this happened. she said having superglue scratched off her eye wasn't painful, but when the medicine stopped working, she had a terrible month in bed in complete darkness and wanted to die because of pain. she recalled the doctor had said: "oh no, another one?" so i guess it must be pretty common...
I usually use eye drops at work and i leave in in my drawer. Everytime I wanna use, i would squeeze a drop on the back of my hand to check first. In the office world, you wouldnt know who is your true friend.
As a vet tech, we lubricate the eyes during anesthetic procedures, and the tube looks like superglue. I now have everyone at work worried they aren't using eye gel.
It happened to my mother's friend....but fortunatly he is not blind
Same! I have to check the bottle multiple times every time I use them. Same with medicines too.
My aunt actually did this, while driving on her way home from work. She reached in her purse and dug out what she thought was her eyedrops...her contacts kept it from being worse but still required surgery and alot of after care!
One time I was sitting on the passenger side in a car, watching the buildings that we passed by on the street. Suddenly my mother had to slow down the car a bit which gave me time to look at this tall office building that had tons of windows. In one of the windows near the top of the building I noticed this one really creepy figure that looked like it was staring down at me. This would have been fine if the figure didn't look like a young child who most likely wouldn't have been allowed inside an office building like that one.
So well drawn, it took me a moment to understand the person has already died
"Don't worry son. In 10 years or so, the only ghost haunting you will be your crippling student loans!"
The dad realizes that the boy is actually seeing something behind him that he himself can't see. Kinda creepy. If you Google "scary things kids say" you'll find TONS of stories similar to this that parents or babysitters have experienced. :)

Why would you live with other people? Can't you live with your parents for some time before you can afford a small apartment?
I don't think they'd snip off, but they could break your bones and it would hurt like all hell.
This kinda happened to me! Me and a couple friends in school were going down to recess late, and the door was stuck. I stuck my finger in the thing to see if I could wiggle the part open. Then Tristan grab the handle and just yanked it open, cutting my finger and kind of shearing off some skin. Long story short, if you're friends with a girl who can lift over your body weight, don't stick your fingers in doors.
You never know I guess... This actually happened to me. I was about 10 and going to my girl scouts meeting at a church. I was taking off my shoes and leaned against the wall and door. I didn't realize the tips if my fingers we're in the hinge area and the big, heavy church doors closed on them. My little fingers didn't go all the way through so nothing was cut off but it did break the bones and split the skin. :( omg even thinking about it....
It happen to one of my friend and the tip of one of her finger cut off :/
This made me cringe intensely.. my brain has that fuzzy feeling you get when you are expecting intense pain to hit. Thank you for ruining my day :Z lol
I actually know a girl who lost 2 fingers from her hand getting slammed in a heavy metal door! 😖
Weird, I actually do the same thing! I thought I was just being paranoid.
Hence qhy you should always concentrate on the road instead of the lights in front of you. If they need to suddenly brake the change of lights will grab your attention anyway, particularly at night.

One time a nurse stuck a needle into my mom's arm, and she must've done something wrong because it left a scar. (My body is twitching very badly from writing this comment, I have a horrible fear of needles and anything associated with veins being poked by them.
This is my most dreaded part of medical examinations. I fear that when the nurses draw my blood they will draw all my blood, leave the needle inside my arm and I will die.
Worse has happened to me once when I was a kid. The nurse made a mistake, stabbing my vain on both sides. I almost lost my arm from internal bleeding days after.

I think this all the time, or well just that I'll slash it and bleed to death, so I'm always really careful when shaving there
Maybe don't shave? It's double standards that women should go through this while men don't have to. You can fight against our gender unequal society and you won't worry about this.
It happened to me!!!! I was shaving and in a rush, I shaved off a 1 cm wide x 7 cm long stripe of flesh with a 1mm thickness. It was in 2009 and I still have the mark of it in my outer left ankle. I've never seen so much blood in a bathtub... OMG! I was scared AF, I took my flesh from the razor and as I was holding my own flesh like "And now, what do I do with this?".
I have to tell myself similar things whenever i get nervous (mild anxiety)
when it takes too long to surface I'm afraid I'll never get there, that I don't know which way is up anymore. more so in the ocean. swimming is scary
Just let out some bubbles, they'll show you the way up
Load More Replies...One time I came home to my house with my mom (we both temporarily lived in a room together that had cheap rent) and we suddenly discovered a cigarette on the floor. Neither one of us smoked.
In the end we decided the precious person who rented that place probably left it there. But still....
Load More Replies...i had a dream i think i'm not really sure or if it was another dimension but i remember very well that it was only me and my mom and it was death pplz day and we had to jump from white to white cause if we would have had touched the black ones a demon would come to our world and would destroy us...from that dream on oh well....i can't say i was lucky, unlucky maybe
I feel like not only is that really smart-- this is kind of cute <3 I like the idea of taking good care of a life you'll have to live.
So you'd rather face monsters, war, painful deaths, several obstacles, and constant deja vu? (From having to go through the same level again if someone forgot to save.)

haha I've been afraid I would do crazy stuff like that - jump out into traffic, open a train's door and fall out, fall off a wall, etc... :)
That's kinda like that fear that if you're somewhere high like the roof of a big building and look over the edge you might suddenly have an overwhelming urge to jump and you won't be able to stop yourself.
I've heard that you're supposed to leave it open because if you were in a wreck and you needed to be pulled out of the car, you would have to have an unlocked door.
This is one of my fears. I always look at the little orange light in my moms car that indicates the doors are locked if the light is on. I do this multiple times on long car trips. And I keep my hands off the door in any way
I have this fear daily. I always had a bad memory and fear that this defect will get worse with age sooner than later.
i don't have the best memory and my husband openly tells me he thinks i will die of dementia..
There is a biological reason for this. Doorways reset out alert /panic system. We go into mild panic / this is a new place / is there danger here / and stop thinking what ever it was we were doing. ... from the science reporter on the Australian Broadcasting Commission. so probably right.
This is something they mentioned on multiple occasions when I was studying cooking... for exactly this reason. You can lose a finger, you can slash your hand, etc. I even jump back slightly so that it doesn't possibly stab or slice through my shoe. I can just wash a knife if it falls. If I cut myself, I have to thoroughly wash and dress a wound (even if it's not serious), clean the station, and throw out the food I was working on.
Makes since, but if no blood gets on the food, why do they make you throw it out? Please clarify.
Load More Replies...Arrrggg I have actually trained myself to automatically let things drop in the kitchen. Trying to juggle /catch hot things usually ends painfully too. Now I just need to train myself to automatically get my feet out of the way.
I think I do that already... if something starts falling, I basically run back.

I worry I'll sneeze while driving and get in an accident while my eyes are closed
I read that it's actually difficult (and even impossible for certain people) to sneeze with your eyes opened. It's a reflex move that can't be controled.
It's impossible to sneeze without shutting your eyes.
I worry during severe wind/storms that the windows will suddenly shatter.
once i was sleeping at my aunts house and something scraped the bathroom window (while i was using it) and i concluded it was a branch. the next morning as we were driving away, i realized the bathroom was facing the driveway- and it was impossible for it to be tree branches...
That is why it is good to wear eyeglasses instead of contact lenses. You are safe at least from this thing.
Some crazy chick once told me people with glasses are more likely to get brain cancer because our glasses amplify the wireless waves from the Internet. I was at work and she was a customer who thought I needed to know this.
Congrats, you have your own movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3013018/
Short of the heart explosion, i had this dream all through collage and for years afterward.
It's my biggest fear oversleeping or not finding my clothes before a very important test
I'm 40, I still dream about going to a class that I forgot I was registered for weeks after it had begun. Trying to scramble to makeup work...
I hesitated whether to check out this or not but now I don't regret
Gonna have some of those for sure.. I just watched a bit of The exorcism of Emily Rose before bedtime.. Damn curiosity!!
As a child, my head would sometimes recycle dreams I already had and I would always remember how it went last time. A regular dream was then being eaten by something or someone, like in this case an older woman kidnapping me while I was waiting outside a supermarekt by putting me in a bag to put me in her soup. The second time I remembered how terrifying it was and I started thinking I always wake up the moment before dying and I was afraid this time I would die in my sleep. While trying to remember how waking up works I began to feel my blankets, but I was not awake. I saw some kind of mandala with a film of me in it. And that are only my childhood dreams...
As a kid, at night i would think someone was on the phone with me, but as soon as i tried to reply, it would disappear.
Don't remember the number, but one of them was just trypophobia. Also I can't seem to be able to stop clicking 5 more every time even when I know it's going to turn out being a 100+ list every time
I used to sleep with my head at the foot of the bed and my feet in a circle incase anyone tried to kill me at night.
