For the members of the subreddit 'Are the Straights OK?' observing heterosexual people's behavior has become an anthropological exercise.

If you take even a quick scroll through its content, you realize that sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and other awful ideas still exist in modern communities.

"Is someone holding these poor souls hostage and forcing them to be together?" the moderators of the online group ask on its front page.

These posts serve as a poignant reminder of the ongoing need to tackle social prejudices.

The first guy is totally wrong though. For most of history having a strong partner who could contribute to the work was crucial to the family's/tribe's survival.

To put things into perspective, 7% of Americans are lesbian, gay, or bisexual, according to a Pew Research Center survey of 12,147 U.S. adults conducted in summer 2022.

More specifically, some 17% of adults younger than 30 identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, compared with 8% of those ages 30 to 49, 5% of those 50 to 64, and 2% of those 65 and older.

Similar shares of men and women identify with any of these terms, as do similar shares of adults across racial and ethnic groups.

Furthermore, around 1.6% of U.S. adults are transgender or nonbinary – that is, their gender differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

While that sounds like a relatively small share of the population, more than four in ten U.S. adults (44%) say they personally know someone who is trans, and 20% know someone who is nonbinary.

There are many countries where women don't take the husbands last name, and, interestingly, Japan has a tradition whereby if a family line has no sons, they effectively adopt a man to marry into the family and the groom will take the brides name.

In some countries women don’t change their name. My husband’s family is an example. He’s Moroccan. All the women in his life all have their dad’s last name and didn’t change it when they got married. They found it odd I took his last name when we got married and he had to explain that was a normal thing westerners do

Yeah dig into your genealogy. See how many deadends you encounter because the wife was named Jane or Mary and there is zero information on her maiden name. Don't erase yourself ladies. Remember, hundreds of years in the future your descendants will want to know 'Who' you are/were. Many of my great-grandmothers are lost to the mists of time, because women were disposable.

My surname is beyond common, it's everywhere. So if I'm ever getting married, the Missus keeps her maiden name or better yet, we double-barrel it. It could be long I know, but if PenaVega exists, I can write my own chapter with her as well, starting with a name we both share.

People often confuse feeling excluded and feeling uncomfortable. Of course there are idiot intolerants in every movement. I know some really intolerant feminists, and some really intolerant gay people, for example. But, in general, people say they feel "excluded" when they are uncomfortable because they are forced to analyse their own ideas and biases.
