Some of the most disturbing stories to be heard can be found in real life, not just in books and movies. And it just goes to show that even the most ordinary-looking folks might have some deep and dark secrets hidden among all the skeletons in their closets. You can never tell what someone’s done or what they’ve experienced just by looking at them superficially.

Reddit users revealed the creepiest confessions and the most disturbing things that they’ve ever heard from seemingly-normal people. We’ve collected the most powerful stories to share with you. Scroll down to read them, but be warned—many of these are not for the faint of heart and deal with some very dark aspects of humanity.

Bored Panda wanted to learn more about our fascination with reading horror stories (whether fact or fiction), so we reached out to Bram Stoker Award-winning editor and writer Doug Murano. He is the founder of Bad Hand Books and has launched an Indiegogo campaign to inspire people based on his extremely viral 'give me calloused hands and tender hearts' tweet.

"Real life is absolutely terrifying right now. We're years into a deadly pandemic. Authoritarianism and fascism are literally on the march around the world. People and institutions we once thought we could count on to do the right thing routinely reveal themselves to be opportunists and cowards. It's not looking good right now. These are real monsters and there is no silver bullet. That's the one thing about horror—there are rules you can follow to defeat the evil. Real-life isn't quite as easy as that," he told us how reality stacks up against fiction at the moment. Scroll down for our full interview with Doug.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I used to help out at a nursing home. This old Russian lady would relate the same tale over and over. Her husband drank and hit her. It was sad for sure. But one day she leaned over and whispered "he was [bad] drunk, so I pushed him down stairs. Dead."

Yes it is. I've seen people on fixed incomes do this towards the end of the month. They can afford the 56 cents for off brand cat/ dog food cans but not really food. I usually point them to the ramen packets. I worked retail during Christmas season for years.

Once had a co-worker at a factory (we were both office employees) ask me why I was so friendly to the floor workers. Knowing he as an a$$ I just replied that I had no concerns of being targeted when one of them went crazy and shot up the place. The surprised look on his face was priceless!

Editor and writer Doug believes that part of the appeal of the horror genre is that it allows people to tackle the issues of the day in exciting and unexpected ways. "Look at what Jordan Peele is doing in terms of our discussion of race in America with Get Out and Us. Contextualizing that discussion within the horror genre allows him to force the discussion in an entertaining and visually interesting way that I wonder whether he could achieve otherwise. The spectacle allows the message to slip right into our subconscious," he shared.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk My parents got divorced when I was 6 and my mother got full custody because my dad was super abusive. She'd always tell the story of how they were fighting before the divorce and the 3 of us were out boating and my dad tried to tip the boat so that my mother [and] I would drown. Flash forward to 20 years later when I reconnected with my dad. We were driving to meet his family and he had a mental breakdown and confessed that he is bipolar and wasn't on his meds but he did in-fact try to push her and [me] over the side of the boat in hopes that we'd drown. He also wasn't taking his meds again when he confessed.

Please understand that medication is not for everyone. I'm bipolar and have been medication free for around 20+ years (got off it when I got out from my folks' thumb, as they forced me to take it). There are other treatments, but you can be medication free. One has to weigh the benefits versus pitfalls, and believe me, the med effects, etc, can be as bad or worse than the illness.

My wife is bipolar. Of course I cannot extrapolate everyone's case from hers, but I can safely say that my wife has all her empathy in place and wouldn’t harm a fly. Can Bipolar Disorder affect an otherwise good person to the point where he or she would commit premeditated murder? Of their own family? To me it seems like the excuse "I tried to rape her because I was drunk". I have been drunk many times. Never raped or tried to rape anybody.

This is also scary because he still doesn't take his meds all these years later. Similarly, my ex-husband, 4 days ago, pulled a gun on my son's girlfriend and told her that he had something for her and wasn't afraid to use it. My son was washing dishes and he had just walked over by him mumbling about disrespectful women and bs, then walked over to his girlfriend who was on the couch and and did that. He had already been acting strange, so they had been audio recording with their phone and captured the moment he did it. They did not call the police. My son asked him why he would do this and he was saying, damned crazy women, disrespectful bîtches, always screwing him over. But the fact is he was cheating on one gf with another girl they work with, he broke up with the gf but was still leading her on, making her think they were getting back together and she would be moving back in, when she was hearing from people at work about the other gf. He was playing games with ex gf, cont below

He kept denying the cheating and having multiple women over to his house, even after their mutual friends had told her. So she was taking pills and smoking weed and stormed in on my son, his gf, and their 6 month old baby, at exhusband's house and demanded to have her concerns verified. So my son's gf finally said, yeah, you're right. To which ex-husband still denied even though he was with the current gf at that very moment. A couple days later his ex gf OD'd and had a heart attack, but survived, which caused him to tell my son's gf that it was her fault that it happened. This was like Wednesday night of last week. He kept acting more irratic and Friday his new gf that he was cheating with, broke up with him and that's when he went home and pulled a gun on my son's gf, because he blames her for his issues. Now, the cheating ex gf knew about the other girl the entire time, but figured it was over because they broke up. She didn't know he was still stringing her along and lying to her.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I had a friend confess that every time he stayed at my apartment (which was frequently, because we lived in different countries, sometimes he would stay for a month+ at a time) he watched me sleep. I woke with him staring at me, he was literally inches away from my face just staring and I freaked out, he broke down and confessed. My husband was asleep next to me! That was the most creepy for sure. It also ended our friendship.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk When I was pregnant some crunchy types asked me if I was planning to eat my placenta. I said "No." To that unambiguous answer I met with "You should," "It's natural and healthy," "You will need the nutrition" and other such statements. I respond "I am not a cannibal, I do not eat human flesh." I wish I had a camera to capture the facial expression of a person who suddenly realizes that they have committed an act of cannibalism and encourages others to do the same.

I will never forget when I was in the hospital giving birth to my daughter in the Netherlands in 2001, they asked if I wanted the placenta and I asked what the hell would I want that for? Apparently it's very common to cook it and eat it helps retain the nutrients that would otherwise be lost and I've been told it tastes a lot like liver; either way, yuck!

I couldn’t do it just knowing it was my own body tissue. I’m confident I can find a way to replace those nutrients without having to gag my way through my own placenta. But if some women can and want to, all power to them! Let me know how it tastes cause I’m morbidly curious!

Umm, it's not cannibalism. We are the only mammals not to eat the placenta after birth (apart from marine mammals). It is a by-product of the pregnancy and some believe it is packed with nutrients. It's a personal choice and I'm damn sure your apparent dislike for 'crunchy types' made you think you had scored a point over them. But you haven't.

The main reason other mammals eat it is to remove evidence of the birth so as not to attract predators.

Not sure it's cannibalism if it's a product of your own body. Otherwise you have to include nosepickers and nailbiters, and arguably anyone who's ever exchanged body fluids should be taken into consideration. And breastfed babies I guess. Oh dear.

Doug also had some advice for amateur writers who want to give the horror genre a shot. "Write about what scares you—and be honest about it. Horror is fueled to a greater extent by empathy than terror, so if you can make your audience feel what you feel, you will bring them into your world and your fears. Just about anything can evoke terror in the right context. You have a huge canvas," he said.

During an earlier in-depth interview, Bored Panda spoke about people’s fascination with the dark and disturbing aspects of humanity with psychologist Lee Chambers. One way that that fascination crops up is in the fascination with True Crime stories that explore evil in real life.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I had an art teacher in about third grade who was really cool--or at least I thought so. It's one of my sharpest childhood memories because I remember going afterward, "Uh.....thanks?" and laughing really nervously.

My HS art teacher said my braids could make a hanger for my head as a planter. Don't recall how he phrased it. We were doing self portraits, so I painted it. May still have it ...

All the people saying the teacher should be reported... Teachers spend roundabout 35 hours a week with kids. We talk to them all the time. We have communication quirks ourselves, especially when we have been up late the night before stressing about work. Of course we realise that we have to be careful what we say, but we are human and don't always phrase every interaction flawlessly. Hold up the same lens to your own work interactions- i bet you have the odd face-palm moment. Now imagine that every time you speak you are being scrutinised. This is just one of the MANY reasons that there are shortages of teachers.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk My ex boyfriend could not handle our break up. I broke it off with him because of significant issues - drugs, stealing, etc. I finally got out of it. He didn't. He would not give up on me. At first he was desperate at trying to get back with me, following me, waiting in obscure locations for when I walked to my car, and even threatening to kill himself if I didn't see him. I blocked his numbers, changed my email, transferred colleges, moved a state away, and tried to move on with my life. He was in and out of jail for drugs and stealing in addition to concealed weapons charges. Which was scary for me knowing all the times when he confronted me alone. It was about 4 or so years later when I received the creepiest phone call. It was him calling to tell me that he was looking for me all this time. The tone of his voice, the horrific laughter, I freaked out. I called my parents and informed them, hey if I go missing this is who has me. I called campus security and made sure they had his description. He never showed up but my god, the voice on the other end of the line still brings chills. It scares me to this day that he is out there possibly looking for me. Luckily I've become more aware of precautions to take. Pepper spray, learning self defense, etc. If I was in another state where obtaining a gun was easier, I would have done so. Unfortunately it's not so easy where I am now. I do however have panic buttons and GPS locators so if something were to happen, I can be found. I try not to let fear or paranoia run my life, I try to take the best precautions, but I will always have that fear that just around the corner, he will be waiting for me.

What a misandrist BS comment. I had a woman stalker who would started making anonymous threats, showing up to my work, flattened my tires and tried to run me off the road. More than one woman asked, what did you do to make her do that to you? Men are killed all the time because of comments like yours. Nobody takes domestic violence against men serious.

I feel this one. I ended an abusive relationship in 2019 (thank GOD I got out before the pandemic and quarantine). I was terrified for about a year that he would show up at my new home with some story about how I owed him something. I still live in the same general area and am afraid I'll see him around, even though he's moved across the country.

This reminds me of my mom's ex, he's been in jail for a while now thank goodness, and we did escape him about 4 years ago, but if he ever gets out I don't know if I'd be able to live in peace. I've always been scared of him. He was so controlling over us and was always abusive. I hope this person can be in peace soon <3

Are you willing to shoot him dead on sight? If not, what good do you think having a gun will do? He will shoot you if you escalate by bringing your gun out, or if he doesnt have one he will take yours and use it if you arent willing to pull the trigger.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk My friend told me he robbed a bank...he got like $11,400 in cash and escaped by bicycle. The bank has since been closed but he had it all planned out before hand and worked out to a tee. He comes back freaking out sweating and panicked and his sister knew something was up and then heard on the news the robbery and bicycle and realized it was him but didn't rat him out. He took his girlfriend on a cruise, paid some bills off.

The building I worked at once overlooked a bank, from my floor I couldn't see this happen, but, the 5th floor could. Someone robbed a bank, ran behind the Wendy's next door and changed their clothes and then stood in front of the bank and waited for a bus! Of course they were caught!!

Back in the 70's, a relative of mine & his girlfriend tried to rob a bank, with toy water pistols. When the teller hit the alarm button, they ran out & took off on his moped. The cops caught them of course. When he went before the judge to be charged, he couldn't understand why he was being held - he actually told the judge "I didn't get away with any money, so I didn't really rob the bank", and demanded to be released. Yeah, that didn't work so well.

The cruise, a bit much. But the bills, especially in America, and especially especially if they were medical, sheesh. It might have been the only way to pay them off. I'm not saying what he did was right, and I would have a lot more sympathy if not for the cruise, but it might have been the only option he had.

"When considering why the darker side of humanity and entertainment are so compelling, we have to first look at our evolutionary journey as human beings. For the majority of our existence, we were prey and always hyperaware of threats to our safety, which created a negativity bias that we are drawn towards," Lee told us.

"But in today's safe and often sanitized world, we are rarely threatened significantly, and the ability to explore evil, frightening and gruesome entertainment is one of the few ways we can visit this part of humanity while remaining safe and comfortable,” the psychologist said to Bored Panda.

“There is a level of novelty to it, it removes boredom quickly, and it helps us to discover our emotional limits while understanding the minds of those who go beyond social norms and potentially gaining knowledge of how we might avoid being victims ourselves. They also offer closure, with many stories ending with the mystery being solved, and the criminal being brought to a level of justice.”

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I was with some friends at a bonfire, and there were a bunch of seemingly cool/normal people there... we were all just hanging out, drinking and having a good time. The stories started flowing, and kinda out of nowhere, this pale/gollum-[esque] dude chimes in with "one time, some friends and I lit a playground on fire..." We all kinda sat in silence, then awkwardly laughed and shrugged it off. Stories kept flowing. Then a few minutes later he said "... yeah, back where I grew up, it was a small town... we didn't have a lot to do, so my group of friends and I would go around the neighborhood and find stray cats, and stomp them to death" ... and he kinda chuckled as he was saying it (like he expected us to laugh with him) ... everyone kinda said a collective "that's really fu***d up man..." ... and again, there was awkwardness and silence... He quite literally ended the night with his next story... "One time we stole a car from a parking lot. It was me and one other friend, and we just noticed that the lady had left the car running while she ran into the store, so we just hopped in and drove it off... Then, right as we got out of the parking lot and on to the main road, we noticed there was a baby in a safety seat in back... my buddy panicked, and as we got on to the main highway, he just threw the baby out of the window... we never found out if it was okay or not." Everyone left without really responding to that one... Later, we discovered that he ended up doing some time for shooting an 80-year-old lady in the face with a pellet gun from his balcony... just for fun. Good dude.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk OK, I served in the Parachute regiment in the British army and another unit (Prefer not to say) and then went on to private contracting. I went to protect Christian missionaries in Sierra Leone in the late '90s. One of the peacekeepers had detained a young boy, maybe 8 years old. I asked what he'd done wrong to the missionary and she said 'ask him'. I asked why he was detained and he told me he had 'Murdered his brother, his sister and his mother for admission into the RUF'. This 8-year-old boy had killed his entire family.

Oh man, you need to understand how it works!! The RUF and many other military organizations in Africa go to villages and round up young boys. They force them at gunpoint to rape their own families. The soldiers will rape and torture everyone. They will force the kids to sometimes kill their own family afterwards, or they will kill and torture other villagers until the kids comply. They make it so that the kids are so traumatized and so shamed, that they will never, ever go back home. All the kids have left in the world are the terrorists, and they are then further traumatized by being taught to kill others, until they are the perfect killing machines. To think that kids are then PUNISHED for all the trauma that they have been through. I hate f*****g missionaries with a passion. They have no f*****g clue. I have done work on the survivors of this horrific practice, who are often continually raped and abused themselves. They need rescuing, not "detaining".

The RUF was the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), a rebel army that fought a failed eleven-year war in Sierra Leone from 1991 till 2002. The RUF was particularly brutal and bloodthirsty even by the standards of African revolutionary armies. They made extensive use of child soldiers, some as young as 5 yrs old. The three most senior surviving leaders were convicted in February 2009 of war crimes and crimes against humanity and received sentences of between 25 and 40 yrs.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk Once I was out. We were sitting side by side at dinner, and two of our friends were sitting across from us. Mid-meal, the liar's phone rings. Since I'm right next to her, I see that it clearly reads "mom" on the caller ID, and she presses "ignore". No biggie, she can call her back later, it's rude to answer a call during dinner anyway. But then, she starts talking about how it's her ex who called her, and how she's too afraid to pick up the phone. She suddenly tells us that her ex is this crazy stalker type person who abused her for years and who keeps tracking down her phone numbers and addresses no matter where she moves, and how the police won't believe her and how she's always so afraid of seeing him on the streets. She started shaking and crying and everything, it was quite the performance. If I hadn't clearly seen that it was her mom who called her, I would have believed it. And for what? What was the point of that? That was the day I really realised how much this chick lied. It was insane.

The thing is he says everything in a very veryain, convincing way and now I think of all thoae times he would tell me stuff about nature and the world and I'm scared he made me biased in some way. The only good thing coming from this - I learned to shut up and just say 'i don't know' if I, in fact, don't know aomething while before I would try and figure it out in my head without having much info.

Lee stressed that seeing someone else face evil while the viewer (or reader) feels safe can even have a “comforting element” to it. "It can take us on an emotional rollercoaster, have us trying to solve the puzzle and test our fear in a controlled way. The permission to explore evil is powerful, as we so rarely get the chance elsewhere, and in itself, it is healthy and normal in moderation," he told Bored Panda.

"The challenge we face is the fact that consuming too much of this can desensitize us, and cause us to become less empathetic to the suffering of others, more fearful of our own environment, and potentially be more likely to use aggression ourselves,” the psychologist warned that consuming too much negativity and darkness can have an adverse effect on our mental health.

“It can also cause us to be triggered by our own previous adverse experiences, make it harder to manage our own emotional balance, and increase our stress levels, so moderating our consumption is something we should have front of mind, even when we get embroiled in the latest series that is pulling us in.”

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk So this is actually my mom's story. She and her best friend in high school took an anatomy class together. They dissected fetal pigs. One day the friend confesses that she stole a fetal pig from the lab, took it home, and she dressed it up in baby clothes. She asked my mom if she thought there was anything wrong with that. Bonus: The friend is a very successful psychiatrist.

The mental health profession is a magnet for the mentally ill. The most unstable person I know got her masters in psychology. God help anyone who has the misfortune of trusting her to their care.

The main reason psychologists and psychiatrists are in their professions comes from them studying the reasons for their own mentall illnesses.

Poor girl, she had to pretend to be strong, when in fact she was afraid that one of her peers would know her secret, which she was clearly ashamed of. Sadly, she would have been bullied for that.

    most people like the smell the reason is Gasoline Activates the Mesolimbic Pathway Benzene and other hydrocarbons, when inhaled, have a suppressing effect on the nervous system, which results in a temporary, euphoric feeling. It produces a pleasurable sensation that's not unlike alcohol or a host of other drugs But to actually like the taste..... I actually got a bit on my hand before and as everyone knows curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought him back, I tasted it {didnt wash my hand, touched lip/teeth} and it was Nasty as hell! reminded me of the medicine they used to put on my arms to keep me from biting myself and my nails {pica sucks}

The smell of petrol, tar, polish etc is particularly nice. Reminds me of my Dad’s garage when I was young, the smell of his motorbike, the lawn mower and the associated tinctures and lubricants that kept them running. A few years ago I drove a sweeper wagon that was assigned to clean up around tarmac laying operations, it was heaven sitting in my cab, window open, breathing in the smell of fresh, hot tarmac. Weird? Maybe. Do I care? Not a jot 😀

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk Out of nowhere my ma tells me my dad drunkenly "confessed" that he and his cousin (whom my mom later dated and had a kid with) picked up a hitchhiker out near the beach in the early '90's. They were intoxicated and one thing lead[s] to another and they ended up killing the guy and burying him in a remote location in some sand dunes. She assumed he was trying to scare her into staying with him since they were going through a break up and she shrugged it off as machismo [BS]. So the story goes, years later a story comes up on the news, they are asking for information about remains found buried in a sand dune. She's not really paying attention until they start describing this large belt buckle that may help identify the man...she flips the fuck out because my dad had bragged about taking the guy's belt off, which had a huge Texas-style buckle, and beating him with it...making fun of the buckle and stuff. Next day the cousin calls and tells her he or his buddies would not hesitate to kill us if she breathes a word. Anyways, she always felt really guilty about not turning them in but after losing my sister (she [passed] very young) she couldn't fathom losing me as well. The rest is history. They are free dudes.

How does ‘one thing leads to another’ end with someone getting killed? That phrase should only lead to things like ‘and then she/he kissed me’ or ‘we got extremely drunk’ or at worst ‘so the officer arrested me for being naked’. It’s not and ‘and then they died’ kind of phrase!

I feel like you should have talked to her, and when that didn't work, ( it never does, I say you should do that in case she ends up in court for her actions you can testify you tried to help her,) you should have told a mental hospital. The police, in my opinion, are an option for if nothing else works in this case.

In real life no one can just tell a mental hospital to incarcerate someone. If a person unrelated is stalking than each victim must file a restraining order once they get evidence. There is nothing police or any authority can do unless she physically attacks someone she stalks. That is reality! Stalking is not illegal, it's just a voilation and a ticket if a judge can be convinced.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I worked on a psych ward for a year in a military hospital. A young man was arrested while doing push ups on the White House lawn. He said he had a meeting with the president and he was just killing time. He is lucky he didn't get killed. Anyway, he was on our ward for quite some time. In that time, he and I got extremely close. When I was on shift, he would request to talk to me, confide in me, etc. This was fine with me, it was my job. This guy said a lot of weird stuff. He was extremely sick. He began making religious drawings everyday. At least 7-10 a day. Then he started to claim he was a prophet. Then he claimed he was Jesus. He even asked us to call him Jesus or Christ. For some reason, after all the other weird things he'd done, that stuck with me the most. After weeks of medication, he hadn't gotten any better. He was getting worse. Eventually he got released and last I heard he said he had a manager and was getting a record deal for being a rapper. He also bought 3 brand new cars and was rumored to be homeless. I think about him often and hope he is doing ok.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk Had an absolutely charming, incredibly smart-looking close friend for a few years. It took me about 1,5-2 years to find out everything about her life was a lie. Even the smarts, she'd read some detailed article on a subject and present ideas as if they were her own, but never knew anything deeper. Pretended to speak many languages by secretly watching a foreign movie with subs on, then "translating" some cool scenes to us. She made up a story about her father abusing her mom to make excuses for failing her uni exams, lied to people about being a medical student to look smart, and would give them very dangerous advice, lied to her family about being a brilliant medical student (don't know if they believed her), and about many, many other things. She was an incredibly fun person, but an awful toxic friend. Still, I was afraid she'd lose her mind completely if I revealed her secrets to everyone. So I only quietly told the people she was abusing or potentially putting in danger, so she couldn't do any damage anymore. Several times I tried to talk her into going into therapy, but I stopped... She was in complete denial about me knowing everything, I was so afraid she'd kill herself if she found out what everyone thought of her. One day she just packed her things, said goodbye with a hug and a huge smile on her face, and left for another country to "pursue her medical studies". I've kept evidence of all the craziness in case it comes back someday. I'd say that if you genuinely pay attention to people around you, you'll find out many creepy stories like this. Some people see friends come and go, and actually never have any idea of what's going on in their lives.

Was she from Belgium? I think I dated that girl, total nutbag and compulsive liar. Told me her parents had imprisoned her inside their house, that her father physically abused her, she was raped by her roommate. Oh, and that she was a 2nd yr med student (at a Belgian university that doesn't even have a medical program). She confessed that she would befriend people so she could take over their friend group and lied to get people ostracized by their own friends.

It has a name - Delusions of Grandeur. When one insists that they are more wonderful than they are, smarter than they are, richer than they are. It's a form of mental illness. It's like they cannot bear being "normal." They MUST be someone special.

Yeah, there are people out there who are just pathological liars. I've known a few as well. Didn't know it right away but they just believe their own b******* and eventually you realize that they're hurting people and you have to distance yourself. Kind of comical for a while until people start getting hurt. Save yourself

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk My friend who is this Grade A student goes over to all these different girls houses, not to have sex or anything. Just to steal their underwear while they're in the bathroom or they're elsewhere. He has a full box (Which includes a pair of my sisters underwear which he admitted to stealing) in his "Pant-ry." I'm surprised no one has noticed in his house. But to this day, I'm the only one who knows. Well, now the whole of Reddit knows.

I wish the poster could read this: This is a well known sign of the beginning of abusive and dangerous behaviour towards women. It begins by secret little "victories" like this. It very often progresses to crossing more and more boundaries and often results in violent behaviour against women. This is not cute or funny. This is the beginning of something potentially extremely dangerous.

Russell Williams was a decorated pilot, a base commander, a holder of a Masters in Defence Strategy, and a colonel in the Canadian Army who is now serving life in prison for first degree murder, sexual assault, forcible confinement, and breaking and entering. He was convicted of entering at least 82 homes, stealing women’s and female children’s underwear, progressing to photographing himself wearing them, committing sexual assaults, and eventually to murder. If your friend steals underwear and you have kept his secret, you are contributing to crimes you don’t know about yet. And dude, that’s also a crappy way to treat your sister.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk A bartender I used to know admitted to making fun of a depressed guy at the bar until he went out back, laid down on the train tracks, and waited for a train to come. I went to school in the same town when it happened, third-party accounts support that he did this, plus I saw the aftermath at the tracks.

Nothing illegal was done, so it's down to their conscience now. However, and more importantly this is a cultural problem. It's still common to ridicule people with mental illnesses. People try to convince themselves that we are in a progressive society, but that's really a joke. Mental illness activism is still strongly needed. We need to challenge things culturally to make any sort of difference. It's still an uphill battle, but it's worth fighting for.

As a bartender, dealing with all types of people is literally your job. Some people just lack empathy and compassion. Those people just should not work with people. I had a coworker jump in front of a fast moving train. There wasn't even enough of her left for a coffin :(...all because she was too afraid to come out to her deeply religious parents :(

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk [My father] is a career soldier, is still in and has many more years before he gets out. (23 years in so far). Well he isn't the most normal person anymore, after he came home from Iraq the second time he had changed majorly. He was put on alot of PTSD medications that keep him pretty normal most of the time. However, on his 48th Birthday we decided to celebrate with some friends and have a few drinks. We didn't know that he didn't take his medicine that day and we got him a little too much to drink on whiskey. One of his non-military buddies said "hey man, how many of those bastards did you actually get?" we all stop and just stare not really wanting an answer and hoping he was sober enough to not provide one... he wasn't. He answered with "You know what? I don't give a f*ck about the [jerks] I killed, they tried to [end] me and my buddies, they deserved it. The only ones I do regret are the women and children that got in the way they didn't deserve to die." We stopped giving him drinks after that and haven't spoken about it since, but it was a shock to say the least.

Oh how wonderful. You send them off to kill people and/or die somewhere and when they get back, you deny what happened over there because it makes you uncomfortable. YOU, his FAMILY, should talk with him. Let him tell his story, his horrors, so he can maybe overcome them. Not give him meds, withhold liqor and hope he never mentions it again. What a horrible people you are.

One of my cousins is a career soldier, and one Christmas Eve he got absolutely wasted and told us about this one time when he was in training, his superiors got him and his fellow recruits drunk and told them to go out into the city and bring back homeless people. They did, but they never saw where their superiors took said homeless people. The next day when we asked him about it, he went BERSERK. Said he never told us any such thing and to never mention it again.

Family can't listen and help them cope because they won't/can't talk about it. They shove it down as hard as they can and try to cope themselves. It breaks them. That's one reason why there are 22 veteran suicides a day. That's what Mission 22 is about. Trying to stop 22 suicides A DAY! So when military budgets are cut, it ain't bombs and planes and guns, it's programs. And the social/medical ones are the first to be cut.

Never ask a soldier how many people they killed. I served in peacetime and I have been asked several time. My job was to lob nuclear missiles, if I had to answer "Yes" the number would have been pretty high. Just don't ask. Especially of someone that fought an insurgency where the line between enemy soldier and collateral damage is hair thin.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk When I was in middle school, about 13 at the time, I had an English teacher we will call her Mrs. L. I had a friend who would spend a lot of time with our teacher outside of school. Going over to her house, to the mall, [etc.]. My friend after awhile told me that he had been having sex with Mrs. L, who was in her late thirties and married and that he was going to tell his parents about it. They pressed charges and she was gone from school for awhile and then quit, but didn't serve any jail time. I don't know much else about the court case. We kinda stopped talking after all this had happened.

Also depending when this was (GenXer/Xennial here) it just wasn't something anyone would take action on unless forced. First like someone said, she's a woman and a teen boy should feel manly about that (Hello Van Halen's Hot for Teacher). Second, like bad cops, schools don't want that hanging over them so they just let them go and "kick the can" down the road. Three, if it had been a girl and she was old enough (double standards with ages) at say 16/17 then she "knew what she was doing." I'm so glad we have made better forward movement in this arena. The things I witnessed and knew about with our teachers....

So people obviously don't understand patriarchy. This has happened several times recently in our country too. It's pretty sickening. Fortunately our laws are pretty strict about the age issue. Except our marriage act (which was written during apartheid). Fortunately THAT is going to be rescinded shortly. During apartheid however the kid would be joked about as a 'real man' and the female teacher just warned. One case I know of, she ended up marrying him. I think she was 23 when he was 18.

I get irritated by this because we all have weird thoughts. Every single one of us. This was even brought up on one of the BP articles about “Things people tell their therapist that they think are shocking but turn out to be quite common”. There is not a problem with having a random thought; the problem starts with how much real estate it takes up in our mind. Thinking about eating flesh? Ok, strange but human. Obsessing about it? Ok, that’s more of a concern.

Meat is meat. Cow, pig, chicken - human - it's all the same. Having a drumstick on your plate or a piece of fried human flesh makes no difference - it's all dead body parts.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I have a completely normal friend (we're both in our early 40's now) that shared with me his childhood story of living with a ghost. Every night he had a ghost that would walk down the hallway into his bedroom and just stare at him ... sometimes making noises, but usually quiet. He was so petrified that he would pull the sheets over his head. When this first happened, he would scream or run down the hallway to his parent's bedroom but they would always turn him back to his own bedroom and tell him that his imagination was running wild. Over time, he actually grew accustomed to this apparition, but was still freaked out by it. I, personally, don't believe in ghosts and think that it must have been something else. But because my friend has such a type-A and a "no-lies" personality, I admit that I found it creepy (the hairs stood up on the back of my neck) to listen to him tell this story with such a nonchalant and straightforwardness. He eventually moved out of his childhood home when he was a teenager and these "ghost" episodes have never reoccured. There are different people living in his childhood home now, and he said that he would never go back there again.

Apparently old freezers vibrate at that pitch which can cause hallucinations. So maybe he had an old freezer close to his bedroom. This explained a lot to me when I found out because I had a similar experience when I was a child, and my bedroom was right next to a room with an old freezer.

I personally, don't know anyone who is /was dealing with this issue (so, no first/second hand experience). But I've heard, and even more stories read - mostly on the internet, very similar to this one. In some, entire families have become accustomed to the spirit that lives in their house, moves certain objects, for example, opens kitchen drawers and moves chairs away from the table while they watch, therefore, without any mystical intent. I've really read a lot of these. Basically, everyone has in common that spirits "live", and are tied to the space in which they are located, and not to people who come and go, pass through "their" houses or apartments. I don't know why I or "my people" haven't experienced anything like this, as proof that there's a possibility of these ghosts, which has decided to stay. And if so, did they decide to stay behind by themselves, or did something force them to do that? I have also heard of ghosts who have no intentions, neither bad nor good, they simply existed in their homes. Most of them are not even creepy, and when they seem to be, they don't get it, they are trying to have some fun. Everyone has in common that they allegedly had some unresolved "business" that was too important for not finding a way to make it right. (it could be something really small - for us, living beings), but they thought it was really important to take care of it.

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk I work with a Polish dude who barely speaks English... He's a loveable 40-something dude, who just drinks vodka and laughs infectiously all day long. A textbook carefree scamp. Every couple of months everyone from work heads to a bar that hook us up with half price drinks for that particular night. It's pretty sweet... So anyway, this Polish dude and i were at the end of a long 10 person bench laughing about nothing and drinking ice cold cruiser, after ice cold cruiser. It was great. Eventually we (somehow) got onto the topic of what he did before he came to England... After a few brews his English became even more scattered, but he did try, bless him. So he says he was in the army and so on and so forth, after which he said 'I shoot 7 men dead'. Now that might not seem too heavy for you, but it blew me away... He was on the front-lines during the Kosovan war (from what i could gather). I couldn't, and didn't want to, get too much more out of him due to the language barrier. Also, some gnarly, illegal shit happened during that war, which I don't think i could bear to know about. Keep smiling, Pete

I always knew you had to be careful with these quiet and invisible people. Of course, depending on age and degree of maturity. For example, one of the best things my dearest childhood friend owns, for example, are situations that I really adore and it's that after all these years she can still surprise me, of course pleasantly. Whether it's a gesture towards me or someone else. And on the other hand, I love that I know her in her soul, and I adore the fact that she was/is always on my side, no matter what, no questions asked, who wouldn't want that type of loyalty and uniqueness for understanding the real friendship which goes both ways?

30 Absolutely Horrifying Secrets People Confessed Having Heard From Seemingly Normal Folk There was this chef I worked with who seemed like a pretty normal dude. He was an immigrant from Haiti. One day he brings up that he had to put his sick dog down when he was a kid. He said he did it himself since Haitians didn't have extensive access to medical care for people, much less animals. He said he tied a rock to its neck and dropped it in the ocean.

My old dog (Who has now passed on, he was hit by a car about six or seven months ago, I’m still not over it, trying to move on from the grief, but I’m okay right now) used to be really scared to go over bridges. My parents would take the pupper on hikes and every time they tried to go over a bridge, he wouldn’t budge. The obvious theory of ours is that someone dumped him into a river as a pup, because we got him from an animal shelter, so he had to come from somewhere. People can be so cruel to animals.
