50 Times Architects Made Buildings That Look Cool But Were Uncomfortable To Live In Or Use
If you ever feel like some architects live in their own fantasy land, you’re not the only one. The buildings that they create can range from majestic all the way to magical, and they’re sure to catch your eye with their flying buttresses, stoic columns, angelic balconies, and fearsome facades. However, you can sometimes get the idea that some of these artistic innovators haven’t fully thought some things through—like the fact that people actually have to live and work in the buildings they design.
We’ve got some dreamy and confusing buildings to show you today, dear Pandas, so take out your opera glasses, grab yourself some popcorn, and let’s go take a tour through the crème de la crème of the ‘Bizarre Buildings’ subreddit. Check out some of the coolest-looking buildings that people might have a hard time living in, upvote the ones that you enjoyed the most, and let us know which one you’d pick as your home in the comment section.
I had a lovely chat about architecture with Dr. June Komisar from Ryerson University. Dr. Komisar, who is a specialist in architectural design, the history and theory of architecture, and designing for urban agriculture, told Bored Panda that professionals should look to the "wise" ancient Roman writer Vitruvius for inspiration. "What he said about balancing commodity (the suitability of the building to needs), firmness (structural integrity), and delight (the aesthetics of the building and its relationship to site and context) still holds."

Cat Shaped Kindergarten, Germany
It´s in my hometown and dedicated to T. Ungerer, author and artist of many wellknown books
I grew up with Ungerer. I’m not sure he liked children at all. But I loved the books.

Why would it be uncomfortable to use? Read carefully :)

The Evolution Of This Building Can Be Seen In It's Masonry
It shows the silhouette of the neighborhouses which were destroyed to have more parking space!
That's actually the evolution of the neighbouring building, which was torn down.
is this the evolution of this building? OR is it the evidence of a building which once existed and is now extinct
Just what I was going to say! I've not seen silhouettes like this in any other city. And then I noticed the street sign and that confirmed it :)
Load More Replies...I see this in my area (older part of US) and it's awesome. Why would this be "crazy"? It's really striking, to me.
I count at least four. 1) Looks like a stone wall, flat roof structure with a stone chimney. 2) Then a stone wall, peaked roof with stone chimney. 3) Then red brick, peaked roof with chimney. 4) Then last is a red brick, low-peaked roof structure that goes as high as #3's chimney.
Load More Replies...Dr. Komisar pointed out to Bored Panda that no matter how good an architect is, they won't be able to be prepared for all potential problems and eventualities. "But understanding the site conditions and evaluating other buildings using the same construction techniques and materials can help avoid problems," she said.
I was also interested to learn about how architects can innovate and create originality when it sometimes seems like every single idea has already be done. According to Dr. Komisar, the changes don't have to be something profound. Start small.

Load More Replies...I wish we Western-ish Europeans and USA/Canadian Americans knew more about Azerbaijani culture - not only the gorgeous rugs, but the music, poetry, food, etc. An ancient and beautiful culture that should be better-known outside its own borders.
UK people: fear not! We have a National Carpet Museum in Kidderminster, it looks nothing like this, it actually shares its building with Morrisons 🤣
Absolutely inspired. You don't even need to know what the building's purpose is to appreciate its beauty.
"Innovation does not have to be radical, but can be an incremental change that will benefit the users and society at large. At the moment we have a huge opportunity to build sustainable buildings that approach or attain a 'net zero' energy cost. By using local and/or sustainable materials, designing for passive and/or active solar and wind power, designing for very low energy usage, and renovating and adapting existing buildings we can help to mitigate climate change."
Dr. Komisar continued: "Addressing this environmental crisis is not only an issue that we must address but also is a tremendous opportunity for design innovation. Addressing these concerns will most definitely introduce a variety of creative solutions."
Giant 16th-Century ‘Colossus’ Sculpture In Florence, Italy Has Entire Rooms Hidden Inside
Love the sculpture - room looks more like a hide out than living quarters.
I've seen this statue a few times and love it. Never knew there was an inside. I wonder what the rooms was made for originally?
You've never seen signs that say, "Enter in rear"? This is proof they were telling people this as far back as the 16th century

This Building In Guizhou, China
The ones at the centre, top have both built on their balconies. Others have pretty substantial trees growing. I wonder if everyone just builds/plants whatever they want, no regulations enforced. Other photos online show balconies completely closed in.
Load More Replies...After seeing too many vids of high rise buildings falling down or apart due to bad building practices in China, I couldn't live in there.
Yes, im loving that. I like the different flooring and the surrounding tree's
It's a deceptive angle. There is forest behind, but everywhere else, more hire-rises. I found it through posts elsewhere - if you want to find it on google maps/earth, put in 'Fuguiyuan Parking Lot, Wudang District, Guiyang, Guizhou, China'. There are 4 towers just south of there.
Load More Replies...I don't know why everyone loves this..... all i can see is NO privacy so it's a no for me!
I agree on the balcony privacy issue, though I think there are significantly different expectations regarding privacy in China than in the US. This COULD be uncomfortable, but I like that occupants are allowed a lot of leeway for their individual units.
Load More Replies...Cool to look at, but I would never live there. Looks like it would collapse like a stack of pancakes.
Endlessly fascinating. There has to be a reality television series here.
Architecture is a tough nut to crack. On the one hand, it’s a very functional and rational sphere of activity that literally designs the spaces in which we live, work, and sleep. On the other hand, it’s an artistic expression that puts form on the same level of importance as function. After all, if you’re going to build something (anything!) at all, why not make it stunning?
So of course, it’s up to the architect to solve an engineer’s ever-lasting riddle: how do you innovate and create something iconic while also making sure that your building doesn’t cause people to riot and denounce it in the news?

Sry to say; this is no real house, but an artwork by filip dujardin...
Nice job finding this out and sharing! Thank you.
Load More Replies...Well, 99 Designs points out that buildings should be innovative, eye-catching, and ought to pop out of their surroundings. And that means bending the rules and bucking (at least some) conventions.
However, paradoxically, the architect should also be very aware of the building’s surroundings, using them as a complementary backdrop. You can still have your modern masterpiece as long as you pay tribute to the building’s more traditional surroundings with the details, colors, etc.
And it’s with regards to the surroundings that your choice of materials and the way that you shape your project come in—they’re deeply expressive decisions that you should be thinking about as soon as you start sketching out your ideas for your project.
And always, always keep in mind that even though you’re creating a work of art, it’s got to be practical. Otherwise, what’s the point of architecture when sculpture-making would give you the full freedom to express yourself.

I don't know how it works in Cameroon, but here permits aren't issued without an independent engineering firm doing a structural analysis of any building over a certain size. The Tallest Unoccupied Building In The World, The North Korean Ryugyong Hotel
I was wondering why it was unoccupied; I found the following on Wikipedia: "Construction began in 1987 but was halted in 1992 as North Korea entered a period of economic crisis after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. After 1992, the building stood topped out, but without any windows or interior fittings. In 2008, construction resumed, and the exterior was completed in 2011. The hotel was planned to open in 2012, the centenary of Kim Il-sung's birth. A partial opening was announced for 2013, but this was cancelled.[7] In 2018, an LED display was fitted to one side, which is used to show propaganda animations and film scenes." Interestingly, it gets 3.6 stars from 533 tongue-in-cheek Google reviews.

Water gets carried down through rainpipes? Like any ol' building.

I know this building. You hit the eject button and it ejects you straight onto the beach.

This tells you all you need to know about Grand Rapids. I used to live there, and the whole mindset is "forward thinking, backward acting". This building is poured concrete. An oven in summer, and an ice block in winter. The idea is fantastic, but the "how cheaply can it be done" mentality which pervades Grand Rapids resulted in a self-defeating hideous disaster. The tragic thing is that housing in the area is so scarce that this castle has a waiting list.
I've seen prisons that look BETTER than this. The Old Joliet Prison, for instance.

I was thinking the same thing, most of them seem pretty functional, even if unusual.

A lot of these were really gorgeous! Most of them don't look uncomfortable or impractical (at least the first 2/3 don't, anyway).
