50 Times People Didn’t Have To Go Shopping And Made Their Own Awesome Things, As Shared In This Sewing Community
People who know how to sew are never limited to their wardrobe. Or the shelves in a store. Their hands can do miracles — they can make clothes themselves.
There's a subreddit called r/Sewing, and it's the place where these skilled craftsmen show off their work. We're talking intricate wedding dresses, umbrella coats, and much, much more! There's plenty of surprises on this 372,000 member-strong sub.
"This is a community specifically for sewing including, but not limited to: machine sewing, embroidery, quilting, hand sewing, tapestry, patchwork, and help/suggestion threads," they say in their 'About' section.
We at Bored Panda have handpicked some of the masterpieces these sewers have created, so continue scrolling and who knows, maybe the photos will inspire you to pick up a spool of thread yourself. Enjoy!

Been Sewing Shirts And Matching Ties For My 5 Cats. It’s Been Fun. Hope You Like Them
I honest-to-god love this guy but the cats look as if they want an intervention for him.
It's mostly the one-handed pose (selfie?) that is uncomfortable for them. The most content is the last one, and not coincidentally that's two-handed.
Load More Replies...The cat in the second to last pic is like “OMG I love this tie”
The most popular post on the entire subreddit belongs to user vjloco. It's a collage of shirts and matching cat ties that he sewed for himself and his cats. As of this article, the post has 27,000 upvotes!
"My daughter gave me her old sewing machine at the start of the pandemic. I taught myself with her help and YouTube videos," vjloco revealed the origins of his new hobby to Bored Panda.
I Just Finished My Son’s Halloween Costume
Does it make me a huge nerd that I knew which type of moth he’s supposed to be? He’s an Atlas moth.
You're not the only huge nerd here as I knew the moth type too. :D
Load More Replies...Aww, that's amazing. Could you make my sons book week costume lol.
What a brilliant costume! Made me giggle as it reminded me of one weekend both of the kids and all the grandcritters came up to our house. My oldest grand daughter who was about six at the time told my DIL that a Moth was "the most dangerous animal in the world". About five minutes later the Moth they had been talking about flew into my DIL's eye and the 'dust' on the wings was stinging her. Jessie looked at her and said, "See, I told you so!"
Self Drafted. No Pattern. Outfit I Made From Scratch From Kente Fabric
My no-pattern dresses are made out of rectangles and drape loosely over the bulgy bits
"The first successful thing I made was a tie for my cat Kimi." Yes, it's short for Kimi Räikkönen, for all of you F1 fans who were wondering. "He was hiding in the engine compartment of my daughter's car. And he has quite a bit to say," the Reddit user said, laughing.
vjloco's colorful project began when he bought a bunch of old sheets from a local thrift store. He then learned how to make a shirt and even though it took quite a few attempts, he eventually got the hang of it. He was then able to make the quirky shirt and tie combos.

I especially love how the curtains are blowing - a small touch that adds so much!
"It was sort of backwards, I wanted a shirt for me so I could dress like my furry friends."
"The beige cat, Mr. Nutter Butter likes to leave the house wearing his tie. I can't help but laugh at someone driving out in the country and seeing a cat looking all professional," he added.
"The sewing and cat communities on Reddit are amazingly supportive," vjloco said. "I think most people don't know how supportive Reddit is."
Duchess Coat By Ellie And Mac Patterns For My Spiderman-Obsessed 2y.o. Niece. I Can't Wait To See It On Her!
My daughter loves Spider-Man. This is great considering how hard it can be to find girl Spider-Man clothes!
Finished My Rainbow Quilt! And A Body Pillow Case To Match. Happy Pride Month!
Trouble is you can only have them with rain. I like rain but I know some don't - my dogs for instance! I got rushed home today! Rainbow I saw was fantastic though.
Load More Replies...But cats aren't the only pets of vjloco's. He lives outside Defuniak Springs, Florida, and unfortunately, people often dump animals on the road behind his acreage. "We have a relationship with a vet and shelter in our area. Currently, we have 5 cats and 2 rabbits," he said.
Since his cats are all dressed up now, vjloco is currently working on a pair of shirts for himself and the bunnies.
(Self Drafted) My Old Lounge Dress Wasn't Getting Much Wear, So I Reworked It Into A Sundress
What a great idea. My grandmother has an infestation of those old MuuMuu housecoats, with pockets, ibut really, the patterns aren't bad and it's a lot of material. You'd never get the smell of Glade air freshener, Aqua Net hair spray and Kent cigs out of them but hey, worth it for a gorgeous dress like this
Try washing Grandma's muumuus with a cup of vinegar to get that smell out. Use your regular laundry soap as well as the vinegar. It may take a few times washing them with a cup of vinegar though, so stock up on it beforehand.
Load More Replies...You nailed it ~ this dress came alive! Everything about it is so right and the length is especially eye catching for the design!
It is an incredible transformation from frumpy to fabulous. Wish I could remake all my clothes into the slimming look this dress did. Instant loss of the 19lbs COVID19 packed on with the consumption of M&Ms at. 3AM I ate after realizing I forgot dinner.
I Made A Maple Leaf Fairy Costume For Renn Faire (B4571)
What's great about this subreddit is that it has plenty of material (and support) for anyone like vjloco who wants to start sewing. They suggest books, share machine FAQs, and plenty of other in-depth tutorials and quick tips, so I think the sub will only get bigger. As it should!

This Is A Prom Dress My Aunt From Nigeria Made For Me Back In 2019. We Designed It Based On Two Different Dresses. The Pattern Of The Fabric Is My Favorite Part! (No Pattern)

True, but Utah Mormon prom dresses all look like Pride wear. This is beautiful, I love blue and purple!

I Recreated An Early 1900s Illustration Butterfly Dress!

I Made A Velvet Dress With Leds To Look Like The Night Sky (Self Drafted)
Fibre optic might be a better choice though? A bit tainted by 70s abuses/excesses, but if Rolls Royce use it for their Celestial option ( https://www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com/en_GB/inspiring-greatness/objects/under-the-stars.html ), it can't be the wrong choice!

(Self-Drafted) Sewist On Low Budget Recreating Expensive Dresses. I Was Inspired By This Teuta Matoshi Dress
The dress on the right is made to suit her body, whereas the dress on the left was made in a standard ready to wear size so it doesn't sit as well.

(Fo) I Alter Weddings Dresses For A Living, But Suit Alterations Are My True Passion. Here's My Last Suit I Did For Myself
Classy! Perfect fit and I love the lining on the jacket... A matching kerchief would look great, too... As a Plan B option!
Lining in suits should be another way for self expression, like ties are.
Load More Replies...I always love linings that surprise and speak volumes for the man or woman who must appease the look that of the norm and know they've got party going on under some suit. It's almost as good as wearing the sexiest lingerie Made from the finest silks and lace under your Levi's. Never judge a book by its cover or think you can guess what's in that package you think is not wrapped around anything worth opening.
Coat Made With Broken Umbrellas
That's so cool! I've collected a bunch of broken umbrellas to reuse, but I hadn't thought of making a rain coat! I'm so stealing this idea (won't pretend it was mine to begin with though).
I Made Billy Porter’s Oscars Tuxedo Gown (Self Drafted)
I see a lot of gorgeous suit coats at the Second Hand and good Will stores that are jacquard or vintage fabrics. I wonder if these would look nice using matching materials? I can't sew to save my life - this is gorgeous and classy!
Dress like you own the place. And leave them hoping they are on the guest list where they might run into you again. The prince is on his own.
(McCall's Archive Collection Circa 1956 M7478) Took Forever To Finish This Coat, But I'm Really Pleased With How It Turned Out - Especially The Twirl Factor!
I absolutely love the design... I'm embarrassed to tell you that I remember when this was in fashion! A design that never gets old!
I love archive patterns. I find Vogue ones are very well constructed.
I think we all love the twirl factor, great job, I am extremely jealous because I want one (just too old and lazy to make it)
I Sewed A Wedding Dress Out Of Sweatpants
First Finished Dress vs. First Dress I Can Actually Wear In Public
Both of them look great - I do love the fabric on the second on, very 70's chic!
We don't come with instructions on anything. Just a passion we are meant to discover. That which makes us each unique from any other person. Some never look for it, some spend their live looking for the same as someone else's, and some nail it and celebrate being different than the thousands of knock offs with no souls.

African Print Mermaid Style Dress

Made One Of Those "My Rich Husband Died Of Mysterious Circumstances" Robes And I've Never Felt More Powerful
That's something you'd definitely greet curious detectives in. All it needs is a satin nightie, feathered bedroom shoes, and a mimosa.
Id wear it through the interrogation and in court. No one could ever be found guilty wrapped in such elegance. The butler did it.
(Mccall's 7047) I Made A Prototype Wedding Dress Aka The First Thing I've Sewn Since Senior Prom!
I'm so jealous of her figure, perfectly fitting that dress. I know, it's made FOR her figure, but the same dress made for me would look not half as good 😅
Now, now, none of that! You're being harsh on yourself, and I'm sure you don't deserve it!

Your fabric choice, for this design, couldn't be more perfect! Really beautiful!
I Hand/Machine Embroidered A Starmap Onto These Jeans!

Load More Replies...Wish I Was Brave Enough To Wear This Out. Took Me Forever To Make
Kind of a shame to hide your talent. That outfit was not simple to make. My vote? Wear it. If anyone gives you crap, challenge them to make one better. It's really cool.
Certainly very interesting. It's such a shame that many of us care too much about what others think (myself included). My biggest worry is wearing something, doing something that may seem different to some, and they feel it's their right to take a photo or video and put it online to be mocked or made into a meme.
I think the coolest people are the ones who own their style. They wear what they want, do what they want and aren't held back by other people's opinions. The first time wearing a new out-there outfit is always the hardest. But if you can hold your head up high and rock it, you are showing the world you are fearless and that is cool.
Load More Replies...Wear it out. Wear it whenever you can. You'll regret not sharing it with the world.
Omg, where it everywhere! Go check the mail in it, take the train, visit a gallery...
(Burdaeasy 2019) Tried To Recreate A 60’s Inspired Dress From The Queen’s Gambit
It's very well made, although the fabric isn't right for this dress. You can tell from the way it pulls around the hem and the pockets. The dress on the right is made from either a knitted fabric or a wool type fabric, the dress on the left is made from a woven fabric which affects the drape. Not taking anything away from her skills, the workmanship is really good! Fabric chose is just really hard, especially if you're fairly new. I know I made a lot of dodgy fabric choices when I just started.
I love the dress but the shade of green is off a tad ( please don’t downvote me into oblivion )

I Made An Adventure Ready Dress For My Niece. Machine Washable, No Scratchy Tulle, Fully Equipped With Pockets And Pack Pack For Maximum Storage Capacity, And Of Course A Matching Dress For A Side Kick [m7458]
I love this sweet dress and the sidekick dress brought an extra smile! Your niece will be sad when she outgrows her dress and her sidekick has to carry-on without her... For the time being, she is going to be loving it on cloud 9!
This reminds me of my grandmother's sister (my dad's aunt). She used to sew clothes for my Barbie dolls on an old Singer foot pedal machine. The things she sewed with her failing eyesight blew my mind. 1900s style dresses with matching under skirts and bloomers and detailed collars and sleeves...
It's so hard to watch little girls in layers of tulle and Sunday shoes they come to school on picture day and forget that they went from kid to something as those moments of their childhood have to slip by, hanging upside down in a formal gown and wearing her Tuesday underwear on Friday.

I Made A Velvet Jumpsuit. I’ve Never Been So Comfortable At A Formal Event. It Was Like Wearing Pyjamas
Velvet is so hard to work with, I tried it once with awful results. This is really well done, and much more difficult than it looks!
Kinda unfair that a velvet onesie counts as formal wear for women, but the only accepted formal dressing style in western society for males is a suit. It does look good on her though, don't get me wrong.
With so many other things being unfair to women, just let us have the win and move on.

I need to learn how to use a sewing machine. These clothes were all so lovely and creative
my SIL does all the clothing of her daughter herself, she hasn' t bought anything for 10 years (ok, some jeans don't count :-))
When I was in high school, my mom taught me the basics of sewing by making a renaissance dress out of an ugly "bridesmaids" dress from goodwill. The original dress had a black velvet top with poofy shoulders and skinny arms, and had a full green brocade dress bottom. (and was 2 sizes too small) turned into a black velvet corset with cap sleeves with the green brocade skirt bottom. 😁 it looked really cool.
I wouldn't say that people didn't have to go shopping because most of them require lots of expensive fabric. Amazing job, though !
Exactly, unless you thrift, it's an expensive hobby.
Load More Replies...I made a cute minidress out of a long-sleeved loose shirt. Strapless, no bra required! SO CUTE UWU
Funny enough, I actually planned to start a sewing project this summer! I'm still getting the supplies for it, but as soon as I get them all, I want to make a BP thread about it! :D
So many skilled, talented people. I imagine lockdown gave some people time to start and finish projects they always intended to (I wasn't one of those people)--hooray everyone! Congrats.
All of these were utterly fantastic or better. Clever clever people!
My grandmother was a seamstress before she had a family. Then she sewed for her kids and grandkids. I wish I'd asked her to teach me. She died when I was 18.
