Mahatma Gandhi described cows as “a poem of compassion”. Just like cats and dogs, cows are affectionate, intelligent and enjoy human companionship. Cows are gentle creatures who deserve compassion and respect.
Cows rescued from factory farms are enjoying freedom and compassion in nonprofit sanctuaries where volunteers take care of them.
Nima Sanctuary is the first and only of its kind sanctuary in Romania. Here, cows rescued from slaughter live happily and safely. Nima Sanctuary is raising money to buy a pasture where the cows can frolic in green grass and sunny mountain breeze.
A square meter of pasture costs 3.4 US Dollars or 3 Euros. If you want to help, please share the sanctuary’s fundraiser. Find out more about Nima Sanctuary on their page.
Here are a few images and less known facts about cows!

Cows Remember Everything Including When Their Human Helps Them Heal A Broken Leg
Often horses with broken legs are put down because, without extensive and extremely expensive care (including slings to keep them off the broken leg and to keep the other legs and joints not suffering permanently from having to take all the weight) they can still end up suffering terribly and end up permanently disabled. And some horses will just entirely freak out once they come out of any needed surgery and end up severely injuring themselves in the resulting panic. It's really sad, but sometimes it's the kindest thing to do. Some horses, however, survive the experience just fine and end up having good lives. It's not a one-size-fits-all situation.

Today the sanctuary hosts 23 cows, 3 horses, 2 pigs, 1 donkey and 2 dogs. The founder of the sanctuary lives on site. All the staff love all animals and they all have rescue animals in their homes.

Dairy farm I grew up on I only saw one case where a cow had temporarily abandoned her calf but never a real abandonment. This instance we were collecting the calf as it had been born in a field and the mother came charging towards us bellowing at the top of her voice. She was frantic for her calf. Her first as well so she was a very young mother.

Back in 2013, I founded a non-profit association called Voice For The Needy to help animals in my home country Romania, especially dogs and cats. Pet abandonment and abuse is huge problem in Romania and you can check these infographics I made.
Fast forward and in April 2019, Doina found me on Facebook and approached me (I live in Los Angeles and Doina lives in Romania at the sanctuary). She asked for my help to raise money to purchase a pasture for the sanctuary. We both dived into the fundraising project and it took us a year to raise the 48,000 euros needed to buy the pasture. Doina's compassion for cows and basically all the animals gave me the motivation to give up dairy and I'm working on becoming a vegan like her.
Cows Grieve Deeply
If one of their friends crosses the rainbow bridge, they suffer immensely.
I lived in a caravan on a retired dairy farm. In return for rent I would do jobs around the farm, helping milking, maintaining the fences. Anyway one day a mature cow died, the farmer told me to burn the body to get rid of it. All the other cows were standing in a circle around the body, sniffing and bellowing. They were family and were morning her loss. So I piled gum branches onto the body totally covering it to make a funeral fire. I felt the other cattle knew what I was doing and retreated but still watching me. It took hours of burning and lots of hardwood branches to reduce the body to nearly ashes. In the night we heard wild dogs cleaning up any remains not consumed by the fire. Next morning only ashes remained not a bone to be seen. The circle of life had been completed.
like whenever they force them to have babies and savagely tear them away from them every year so that humans can drink the calve's milk.
Nima Sanctuary rescues cows from slaughter. We are against cows slaughter and against taking the babies away from the cow moms. All of us here don't eat dairy nor meat. As a matter of fact this is the reason we came up with the article.

So you're sayin'... "Some animals are more equal than others"...?
Load More Replies...In 2019, I decided to write an article about the cows and I checked the sanctuary's Flickr feed and picked some of the pictures I thought to show the cows in a positive light that might convince people to look at them with compassion.
Nima Sanctuary is a place for all the rescued farm animals, big or small, including cats and dogs rescued from Romania's streets, forests, landfills (pet abandonment is a huge problem in Romania). Basically, the sanctuary's doors are opened to any rescue animals that cross paths with the staff.
Cows Love Hugs
If this is a beloved pet, how come is it labelled? Please explain the tag on the ear.
Its so if its stolen they can take it back to that number on the ear its like the house number but for cows
PROOF THAT IT'S THAT PERSONS ANIMAL, IF THERE'S NO TAG AND SOMEONE TAKES IT HOW IS THAT PERSON GOING TO SHOW PROOF THAT IT IS THEIRS?
Cows Love Hugs From Grandpa
The sanctuary is mainly built to host cows and large farm animals, but pretty much any animals that need a place can come to the sanctuary. The fact is that cows are gentle animals that are capable of empathy and affection. We people should value them and treat them as living beings, not objects that produce meat and milk.

Fell off a haystuck as a child and woke up to a ring of cows looking down on me like this...
Ok, well I love the image, but I need to clarify this ha, because truth is truth, and that's just really not speaking full truth : cows aren't that smart... they're very feeling creatures, but problem solving and critical thinking are not there strong points. They've been bred this way for farming purposes. They're still lovable, sensitive and beautiful yes, but don't falsely accuse them of being smart ha, because to put in bluntly, yeah they're pretty dumb ha.
Cows Have A National Day
Cow Appreciation Day is on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.
Spaghetti has a national day too - January 4th. Should we not eat that either? What a stupid argument to not eat cow. "But we have a national day named for them!!!"
We do not exchange one life for another. For instance we love cows and don't eat them and at the same time we love chickens and don't eat them either.

Cows With Names Give More Milk
Happy cows that enjoy their human affection results in larger milk production.
Dairy cows make way more milk than their calves need, and unlike all other mammals, they will produce no matter what once they give birth. Not milking them is painful and can lead to mastitis and death. This has been done over thousands of years of selective breeding; nothing can change that now.
From my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), I've learned that it's not that simple though. Dairy cows are forced to get pregnant as soon as possible, so that they will continuously provide excessive milk, resulting in udder infections anyway. It's very painful, and too expensive for many farmers too bother with, so instead they will be sent off to meat farms where they suffer the rest of there journey until brutally killed (NOT with a bullet to the head in all cases...). To give you an idea of how miserably many dairy cows are treated, they're normally supposed to live a healthy 20 years. Dairy cows will live 3.
Load More Replies...And this shouldn't matter because the milk is not ours to take. Milk is made for baby cows by their mothers. They make it to feed their young, not to be stolen and drunk by a different species. Not your mom, not your milk!
Cows produce excessive amounts of milk, so taking some of there milk isn't harmful and in fact helpful to them. But you do have some points Claire, being that the cruel thing about dairy cows is that the dairy farmers will forcefully inseminate them every year which is very difficult for them to handle. Some dairy farms will even just kill the calf so that all the milk can be used for retail... It's traumatic for these gentle and sensitive giants. Anyway I just wanted to point out that while your information is faulty, you're not inaccurate in recognizing the cruelty in dairy farming. Don't just blame the farmers though. Consumers demand for more, and for cheaper. This is the result :/ Think twice before buying milk from large scale dairy companies
Load More Replies...Cow have been bred so intensively over many generations to produce large volumes of milk. Many produce so much milk that their babies can not drink it all. These cows need to be milked or they get severe and painful problems in the udders. Yeah it is a difficult one.
Unfortunately no one seems to consider the fact of why they're producing so much milk in the first place. It's because they're being artificially inseminated every year (aka as soon as possible). It takes a painful physical toll on there bodies, and they're likely to get utter infections anyway. They live short painful lives :(
Load More Replies...Not the people from Nima Sanctuary. We rescue them.
Load More Replies...Cows produce milk even when the calf doesn’t need it, also if a cow isn’t milked every day then they will become infected. Plus we have things like formula which can replace the majority of nutrients from milk. Another fact to add is that unfortunately, not all of the offspring make it sometimes but the cow will still produce milk. She will lactate all long as something milks her so.... it doesn’t hurt them and she could die and get infected if not milked. If you don’t believe me Please check my facts with a reliable un-biased source.

Cows and calves used in the meat industry live a maximum of several months.
5 years according to the title. Which I suppose is technically several months but rather misleading, which I'm sure was the intention.
Load More Replies...That is just not true. Maybe your farm does things differently, but most farms are basically indescribably terrible. Look up a video of the dairy industry. Cows are artificially impregnated (raped), they give birth and their baby is taken within 48 hours usually (kidnapped), they are hooked up to machines that pump their milk out of them and get painful sores on their udders (used), and this whole process repeats multiple times before they are no longer productive enough for the industry (maybe a few years) and are sent to slaughter (murdered). I hope this isn't how you treat your pets.

Cow Tipping Is A Myth
Cows are wary of strangers approaching, so it’s nearly impossible to catch a cow in a state of such bliss that she will allow a stranger close enough to touch her.
I had to look that up. Even if it was really a thing it would be mean. I would hate being woken up from a sleep, just because ppl wanted to laugh at me.
Except it's a whole different species, so you probably wouldn't know that's what they were doing.
Load More Replies...So it took a lot of time and effort to get to the point that the cows would love on these humans like in the pictures? Are they more, or less wary than horses?
If they interact with humans early on they are friendly and approachable. Took a friend for a walk on the farm I grew up on and the cows were so intrigued by this human they had never met - they kept surrounding us due to their curiousity.

Growing up in a dairy and beef farming family, I find it very insulting that "animal welfare" types always assume that farmers cannot care deeply for the welfare of their stock. Farming is hard work, 365 days a year, no respite. You don't do it unless you have deep respect of the animals you are responsible for.
All of these examples must be from one poster. Bovine also show a great curiosity with something that looks different or sounds different. They enjoy live music. Bovine come to watch the musicians. Growing up, we played the radio in the barn for the cattle, as they were calmer.
To those making jokes about eating the animals and how they taste, until you've been to a slaughterhouse and bolted a cow yourself, you could maybe keep your oh-so-funny comments to yourself. I guarantee you wouldn't be able to crack any jokes if you had any idea what happens there.
I have, and I also have seen starving children that would benefit from eating that cow that I bolted.
Load More Replies...Nice try to spread propaganda. "Cows Live Up To 20 Years, Which Is 4 Times The Average Life Span Of Cows Used In The Dairy Industry" Here is the thing, a cow in the dairy industri can live up to 20 years to, but seldom do as cows get sick (mastitis and so on). But perhaps you think they should die in pain and the owners should let them die without interfering? So it doesn't matter if it's a dairy cow or a cow in some crazy vegan rescue, they all can live until they are 20, but seldom do. And why are you pretending that beef cattle only live a few months? They live for years as they take a long time to grow. The average age for slaughter is 2 years and 5 months. And no, you don't slaughter the beef cows after months, as they are around 2 years and 4 months old when they have their first calf. But it's always nice to see idiots that think that a job that more or less has you working 24 hours a day, is done by peope that don't love their cattle. You do know that we farmers have feelings to? Probably more than you do, as we are willing to go through painful tasks, just to make sure that the animals are okay.
You're a farmer? Can I ask you questions about that? I've been trying to research farmer ethics, and I've done all I can online, I want to investigate some local farms soon, but maybe I can start with an online farmer ha. What kind of farm do you have?
