There were even junks that had built-in-rice-farms to nourish the travellers. Ancient china was so rich in culture and technology (4 big inventions) and then all went to hell in the last 300 years. What a pity. Never be complacent people. Its the road to self detonation :(

The Zheng He emperor actually had 3 of these ships...all capable of holding 300,000 Chinese. They also had the ability to round the horn of Africa before the Portuguese did. Can you imagine how history would have changed if China had managed to pull into the harbors of Europe? They were originally built to masquerade as vessels searching for Zheng He's brother, the former emperor that was thought to have fled during an attack, but actually fled to the hills where he was killed by his own brother. The ships were actually merchant ships that obtained items all around Asia and Africa to bring back to the Emperor for his private collection. When he passed, his replacement saw no need for the ships anymore and had them destroyed.

The only thing that can be learned from this is that chinese propaganda is strong and based on falsehoods, and that they're always trying to compensate. This ship was a treasure ship, and not nearly as seaworthy as Columbus's. Also, it was made to show off, not for exploring. Lastly, most non-Chinese historians and scientists agree that it wasn't nearly as big as Chinese historians say, and there's a lot of online resources on this matter.

Wow!! That's an incredible difference! My son had a friend who was 6ft 10 and weighed 145 kgs at the age of 15 and had size 15 shoes! He used to have to bend his head down to get through our doors. It also meant we had to get more groceries when he stayed for weekends. My son was only 5 ft 10 at the time. He's now 6ft 4.

I remember when I was younger, back when you could smoke anywhere, apartment hunting and seeing yellow-brown tar and nicotine stains on walls, generally in apartments that smelled heavily of smoke. Those were places I crossed off my list, as it takes forever to get those stains off the walls and windows, and the smell out of the house. A smoker friend gave me a chair of hers that I liked the design of when she redecorated. Though I still loved the design, I ended up taking the chair to Goodwill, because it stunk up my whole house, and nothing I did could get that smell out. (Sorry, Goodwill...)

Coffee and baking soda and charcoal can help a lot. And primer made for severe smoke damage. We had to do that to every room in this house! And tore the carpet out. Lost leather gloves to gasoline spill smell. Nothing workedn

One of many things that made me choose not to smoke was the Body World exhibit. (The one where an artist has done human taxidermy, but it's tasteful/tactful.) Yeah, people can show you pamphlets and photos, but it's nothing like actually SEEING a smoker's lung in person. I was 15, I think. Anyway, young enough that I didn't know your lungs are "hairy" on the inside. The smoker's lung looked dead. No other way to describe it. It was smooth, and black/white. Lungs are normally a maroon/purple/pink. It looked liked they'd drowned in asphalt. There were also pockets of tar, puss/phlegm, and other nastiness. Knowing that it was REAL and nothing had been done to it (except to preserve it) was enough to never want that inside me.

The visible difference in the photo is color temperature. Sodium vapor emits a warmer (orange) color and fluorescent and metal halide produces a cooler (blue). Color temperature throws off our circadian rhythm because since the dawn of time (pun intended) we are awake during daylight hours and sleep when it's dark. When the sun sets the skies become warmer in color telling us it's almost bed time.

Sodium bulbs are used in parts of California. They make it impossible to tell true colors after dark. Very weird.

That's called the color rendering index. It is important for most all newer light bulbs, especially LEDs. Don't buy anything less than an 80CRI if the quality of light is important. The closer to 100CRI the better.

Also, sodium vapor lamps are used along the coasts because the sea turtles did not like metal halide lamps and were struggling with coming to the shores to lay their eggs.

This computer measures 0.33mm on each side! According to my pal Google: "Currently, the tiny computer serves as a precision temperature sensor. It uses electronic pulses to convert temperatures into timed intervals. The result, for example, is the ability to report temperatures in a cluster of cells within a tumor with an error rate of around 0.1 degrees Celsius. 'Since the temperature sensor is small and biocompatible, we can implant it into a mouse and cancer cells grow around it,' said Gary Luker, a professor of radiology and biomedical engineering. 'We are using this temperature sensor to investigate variations in temperature within a tumor versus normal tissue and if we can use changes in temperature to determine success or failure of therapy.' https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/worlds-smallest-computer-dwarfed-by-rice-grain/

If we could transport computer scientists from the 1940s to now, their minds would be totally blown, just seeing how far we’ve come from then to now. Even someone from the early 1970s would be blown away (we were still on punch cards and tapes for room-sized computers back then—-look up Control Data Institute ads to see what I mean).

The Cardigan corgis always wear a sweater 😜 Ok, seriously though, Cardigans are black and a white, have a more "brindle" coat and have a big floof tail! ((Some corgi tails are docked, mostly for cosmetic reasons. It's illegal in several countries unless it's a working dog. Originally, tails were docked because corgis herd and because the tail is an extension of the spine, if they got stepped on while working, it could leave them paralyzed. BUT many corgis are now being born tailless. Lots of people believe they were initially a cross between a domestic dog and a fox - and if you leave the tail, it'll grow to look like a fox!!))

You want to see even a better comparison, put a bear skeleton next to a human skeleton. When the head, arms and claws are removed from a bear..you have a hard time telling the difference between the two.

This just reminds me of a CSI episode where they found a skeleton in the desert without a head, while working on a case about a skull without a body. They were trying to figure out what happened to the body or why the person was so massive. Turned out to be a gorilla skeleton with the head and hands chopped off and dumped via airplane in the desert

This is just a hypothesis from a non-biologist. The bird talons are long and thin—great for perching but also for piercing, grabbing and flying off w/ prey. The cats have shorter but reinforced claws—great for cutting, and slashing.. The rest are generalists—robust and stronger for digging, climbing, grabbing and, for the omnivores, killing.

I'm no expert, but this appears to be a hand-sewing needle. There's no sign of a hollow middle, or the either flat or angled head that medical needles have. And there's no hole at the tapered end like a machine needle. I'm guessing based on the shape that this is a tiny needle for hand stitching. However, I completely agree that medical needles, no matter how tiny they get, always SHOULD be smaller!

Differences in water densities. Sparkling water is lighter because of the carbon dioxide dissolved in it. Tap or regular water has less air dissolved in it. If his was left for a while, the two would mix as the CO2 escapes from the sparkling water.

alright children calm down and quit getting mad at people building so close to the sea, it's like getting mad at someone who built their house close to a forest and a tree fell on top of it. 1) it's common for beach houses to actually exist on the beach 2) the houses themselves are perfectly fine, they were designed to withstand hurricanes and just natural oceanic disasters as such, hence why they are built on beams above ground. 3) the only thing that got hurt was the dunes, which can be fixed by drenching. i know it's terrible, but most companies that DO drench for the sake of saving a beach, know not to dig up an thriving aquatic ecosystem on the ocean floor, and to pick a spot where it's just sand, dig it up, carry it to shore, and make new dunes. it's perfectly fine, really the only way us humans are involved are roofing damage, and probably flooding like in New Bern.

Not an expert, but isn’t that just sand over the road and possibly over the right houses patios a bit too ? The house on the right doesn’t look to have structural damages, the pole and the cables seems fine, might be they’ve already been restored, what appears to be a road sign pole om the left is diverted but looks the worst damage here. Looks an area damages weren’t that bad, as probably in many other affected locations.

Whenever Somebody Posts A Photo Of The Milky Way, People Invariably Ask "Is That How You See It With The Naked Eye?". Here's A Representation Of What You Do See Compared To What Comes Out Of The Camera

Whenever Somebody Posts A Photo Of The Milky Way, People Invariably Ask "Is That How You See It With The Naked Eye?". Here's A Representation Of What You Do See Compared To What Comes Out Of The Camera

This photo was taken at the Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia, the moon had just set below the horizon and the core of the Milky Way was rising towards the east and was at about 40 degrees. This obviously isn't a perfect representation but it's pretty close. You won't see any color as our eyes can't determine color very well in low light.
The photo you see on the left is directly out of the camera, no post processing has been done at all and you can see quite a bit of green towards the horizon and some orange and magenta hues in the core. My camera's white balance was set to auto and this is a 30 second exposure. ISO was set at 3200 and aperture was f2.8.
edit Ok it seems some people are able to distinguish color in the Milky Way and some aren't. Though it's more common to not see any color. I did quite a bit of research and almost every time this question was posed, people had varying views on what they could and couldn't see. No color - some color - lots of color. So I came to the conclusion that there are just too many variables to accurately depict what you can see, you can only approximate what the average person can see. Yes, some will see it more vividly, some will see it less vividly but the average person will see it similarly to what I showed in my photo. Oh and of course the location plays a large factor.........not everybody is able to sail 100 miles off shore to get the absolute best view possible so it's a bit pointless to use that as the standard bearer :) One other factor you should bear in mind is the technology we choose to portray these images on. Computer monitors. Again there are way too many variables at play here, especially when it comes to contrast and brightness. What I see on my computer monitor is most likely to be different to what another person sees.

No I've seen the Milky Way many times, I've never seen it like the camera captures it in the picture on the right, but when there's 0 light pollution, it looks a hecka ton better than the picture on the left. No camera can capture the human eye perspective of the Milky Way.

So because you've seen it when there's 0 light pollution, that makes the one on the left (that most people just outside an urban centre might see it) inaccurate? (Hint: it's not all about you)

Having been blessed with a spectacular mountain top late night viewing, I can say that the human eye can see and awful lot more than you might think. I instantly knew why it's called the Milky Way. Glowing bands of whiteish clouds, formed from more stars than the human brain can comprehend. Bands of pink, purple, blue even some faded orange. Though you can no doubt see it much clearer enhanced by modern technology, even the best telescopic panoramic shots cannot compare to seeing it in all it's glory in person, a hundred miles from light pollution in the crisp cold air of a September night.

LOL! We just took this photo of the Milky Way last Wednesday from here in Central New Mexico. We went out at about 23:00 MST just to take a photo of our sailplane with the Milky Way. We have no pollution...except haze if a forest fire is occurring, and the air is crystal clear. This night was perfect and there was no wind. We can see the Milky Way just like this from our ranch about 20 miles from where this was taken. This photo was also about 30 secs. It really should be much clearer, but we discovered that our Nikon D80 has lost some pixels. Time to get a new one LOL. Sad that some folks never ever get to see the stars like this. A friend visiting from back East had stepped out of our house onto the back patio and said it looked like rain....as I looked up, I said "Penny, those aren't clouds..that is the Milky Way." She was totally gobsmacked! Nixie-and-...e4e511.jpg Nixie-and-Milky-Way-5d2574ce4e511.jpg

I’ve seen similar graphics, so this seems about right. That’s for liquid water on Earth. The water vapor in the atmosphere might add a little more to the volume, but it is indeed a very precious resource either way.

At first I thought this was incorrect... But the math is right. All water on the planet put together would make a sphere about 1383 km in diameter. Which is about 9.2% the diameter of Earth. Roughly 11 spheres of water across to equal the earth's diameter.

Not sure this is accurate, I believe most people go through the right door because that's what you're supposed to do. The left door is the right from inside and should be used for going out. At least that's what makes sense to me just like driving on the right side of the road. Do people across the pond enter buildings like they drive, on the left side? Foreign tourists are always in the way so I figure that's the reason.

    Kip Vidrine

In countries where driving is done on the left side of the road, why wouldn't you go through a doorway that has two doors, the same way. Otherwise you could run head on into "on coming traffic". Keep Right, you're alright. In countries where they drive on the left, then sure, use the left door more. There it's "left side right side, right side suicide". ;-)

If we're assuming that people open doors with dominant hands, it would make sense. I'm a lefty and except for crocheting which I learned right-handed as a child from my grandmother, who was also a lefty, I do almost everything left handed. Lefty's are a smaller percentage of the population and their general putdown in the past both in language and culture by the right handed majority is legendary. Most tools, including doors and handles are easier for righties, so I suspect that lack of use in the left picture shows the bravery or stubbornness of the few lefties who chose to use their dominant hand, not just an actual percentage.

Uhm, I’m left handed, and opening doors isn’t a left or right hand thing. It’s just whichever way you approach the door, you use whatever hand. (Keeping in mind that opening doors may actually be a factor for some left handers, I guess.)

There is this whole thing about us over sexualizing youth. Like when you see a 12 year old on Instagram and you are outraged that they look like an 19 year old and are sexually attractive. But I think this is a good illustration of us just lowering the age of attractiveness. The new Ken resembles a 14-16 year old while the old Ken looks to be mid-20s. The standards for beauty have always been associated with youth but I kind of think that more and more the standards are more towards young teenagers than young twenty year olds. Creepy.

Now Ken can date Barbie's little sister since he looks like a child. Orrr maybe her brother? :/

This is so unfair. Barbie's hair can be combed, reshaped, ribboned even cut. His is solid plastic.

There used to be Kens whose hair you could style, in the 70s. Some were pretty awful. I can't link it but if you do an image search for Ken rooted hair you'll see what I mean.

Looked like the Crocodile Hunter in the earlier version. Emo teen idol in the second.

I think he’s closer to a 80’s era Robert Redford.

From the original post: "IKR, but you can see blood flowing through my veins. EDIT : ok let's clarify the raynaud thing. I'm military, this pic was taken after a long day in the Malian desert wearing combat boots hence the blueish pruney skin. My feet didn't see much sun bc i wore flip flops mostly under the shadow :( Nonetheless, I've never got so tanned than during this deployment, my skin color is very clear I sunburn easily, not ginger tho."

That guy's foot is pretty much my whole body. I live in Florida and when we go swimming I stick out in the crowd. I'm so pale I can't tan anymore, the rays from the sun just reflect off me like the polar ice caps.

I use this app. It's been really useful for learning about my own mood trends. Really helped with my depression.

This reminds me of a theory that I have about the effectiveness of Presidents in the United States. I don't think that Presidents (or their decisions) really matter unless the decisions are REALLY bad (like gets the people into a war or causes mass demonstrations in the country). The thing that seems to matter most is whether the people have hope. When the people believe that things will get better, they spend more money and things actually get better - regardless of what the President does. Now if we could just get people to understand that, we could be the masters of our own destiny without the fluctuations associated with the emotions and hopes of fickle voters.

I see what happened. You died last November, they brought you back December 7 and you're very grateful. What a nice story!!

It would fit with room to spare if rounded the flat image over the moon.
