But they’re still doing it by hand - the three men on it are laying the bricks by hand and then they all get laid by the machine. Though this would save the bricklayers having to bend down and lay every brick.

There are some awesome machines out there these days. A new one I saw last week really surprised me. City replacing water mains down an adjacent street. One piece of heavy equipment was able to cut the asphalt, trench width, scoop up that asphalt and then dig the trench all while moving very slowly up the road. The debris from the sawing and digging rode up a conveyer belt and right into the big dump truck in front. They were able to replace 1/2 mile of water main and refill and repave the trench in one 9 hour day.

To learn more about what it's like to create captivating photos that provide a unique perspective, we reached out to Butterfly and Nature Photographer Silvia Reiche, who was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda. When asked why we're so drawn to unique angles and rarely seen photos, Silvia says, "I asked myself this question, and I need a kind of ‘emotional’ relationship (memory/impressive happening/visit) to find photographs of well-known places/items interesting."

We were also curious if the expert believes anything can be interesting if photographed well. "For me, definitely yes as long it’s a subject of my interest/passion (nature)," Silvia shared. "For me, it’s not about well enough but if the photo has a certain kind of attraction/mood/special light."

But Silvia says taking great photos doesn't always require coming up with a new perspective. "Sometimes a story needs to be told by details and no unique perspective is needed," she explained.

As far as where her ideas come from, Silvia shared, "Photographing butterflies has been my passion for 40 years and I’m photographing them for myself; it’s about the joy I feel when I’m finding a rare roosting butterfly which I can photograph. I’m never thinking about whether I have photographed this species or this pose before. I’m just happy that they are still there in a time where some species are extinct."

We also asked the photographer if there's anything she'd like to see a photo of that she hasn't been able to capture yet. "No, when I’m out I’m happy with the encounters at that moment, and sometimes I succeed in photographing them. And if not, I’m happy with the memories," she shared.

Although we can all appreciate a beautiful photo that features a unique perspective, most of us don’t actually know very much about photography and how to take those captivating photos. Every professional will have their own way of getting “the shot,” but we thought it would be fun to discuss some of the methods artists have for capturing unique and timeless images.

According to Shelly Perry at Great Escape Publishing, we have to consider the fact that we all start with the perspective that “nature gave us.” She mentions that because she’s short, she’s used to having to look up to things that are taller than her. So it’s usually best if she elevates herself when taking photos, or gets her subjects to come down lower, especially for portraits. But Perry notes that perspective is something important to consider for every kind of photography.

When it comes to shooting famous landmarks and iconic travel spots, Perry recommends finding spots to take your photos from that are out of the ordinary. Perhaps there’s a rooftop bar nearby you can pop into, or maybe you’ll find an interesting angle by walking the streets surrounding the monument. Getting up close can provide a unique perspective as well.

Perry provides the example of some apples she shot that she decided to shoot from far away, under the branches, and high enough to be in the branches, all the while playing with her focus. Experimentation is important in photography, so you might take 15 photos and only like one. But it’s worth it to find a unique perspective that you can call your own and will make your photos stand out from the crowd.

There is a very thick vein in my hand, in my arms the veins are invisible. So I had a choice: cancel this appointment and go to the hospital to have them use fancy equipment to scan for veins OR they could draw blood from my hand which would be more painfull, but I didn't have to go to the hospital. I choose the hand option. It hurt a little bit, but it was not that bad.

My fuzzy recollection is that they pump the dead limb/body's blood vessels with an epoxy (or something like it) that hardens then they melt the organic material away with something that does not affect the epoxy. I may be off-base though

Singin in an opera house myself sometimes and having stood on quite a few stages like this, I have to disagree. Most stages in big theaters are at least this huge, although often there really is no space to go through, as stage staffations and building elements are stored there. Sometimes the whole stage will be prepared in the side-stage and then puhed to the main section. Sometimes a hundred choir singers are standing there waiting for their act. Those backrooms (no, not that kind of backrooms) are also important for things like behind-the-stage music, technical euqipment, ... The visible part of the stage is only a small part of the actual stage. If anything, this stage is more on the smaller side. What really is unusual here is that the stage walls are grey. Usually they are painted black to minimize behind-the-scenes light reflections.

If you want to start taking more creative photos, Backlight recommends a few more ways to play with perspective when shooting. If you’re not familiar with the various types of perspective typically used by photographers, perhaps you’ll want to play around with linear perspective. This is when you “capture one or more vanishing points to create more depth within your image,” Backlight explains. The example they provide is a photo taken in the middle of a road leading off into the middle of the photo, creating the illusion of depth.

It depends on the lip color of the oyster, or its outer shell color. Black-lipped oysters produce black pearls and rarely ever white ones, while most other types of oyster produce a range of colored pearls from white and cream, to blue and purple.

It's not even a destroyer, but a "littoral combat ship" which is about the same sized class as a frigate.

Not a battleship and was basically a huge flop due to being massively over budget and plagued by galvanic corrosion and other issues. Only served for nine years which is pretty sad. Maiden voyage in 2012 and decommissioned in 2021. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Independence_(LCS-2)

Forced perspective can also be a fun one for photographers to use, especially if they’re interested in creating optical illusions. This is used to make an object appear much larger or smaller than it actually is by positioning it closer or farther away from the camera. For example, placing a shoe close to the camera, with humans in the background, makes the shoe look gigantic or the humans look tiny. It can create some hilarious photos, but it’s always important to line up the subjects in the perfect spot to create the illusion.

Yeah well, fun story time: a friend of mine told me about his father's friend who owns a wrecking company. Shortly after building a new workshop out of sheetmetal, some thieves picked up their can openers, and when said friend came to work one morning a big chunk of his equipment was gone. So a little time passed, and in some auction, he laid hands on some old bank safes to store the shorter and lighter equipment. Given, that stuff doesn't cost as much (still in the 5-digit range sometimes), but it's way easier to be stolen than, say, a skid loader. It did work out, his stuff hasn't been stolen in quite a while. Buuuuut... at some point, he lost the keys. *que dramatic dun-dun-duuuuuuun*

There is a good episode of "how it's made" that explains this and says how it's tuned. Basically, the weird interior changes the axis of rotation to make the ball curve in towards the pins.

Long ago I worked at a bowling alley and learned to drill bowling balls. We would take a ball they've thrown and see where the oil track was so we could judge your release and roll. Then we ask how much and where you want your action to start. Then using sideweight or fingerweight adjustments, we drill the ball. Of course different manufacturers had differing types of weight block inside that accomplished differing things, that is taken into account as well.

This is a person as much as an acorn in the ground is an oak tree. Potential, but not likely to naturally grow to its potential. Most pregnancies naturally end before they go farther than this; miscarriages happen before a pregnancy is ever known in more cases than we can imagine. Every acorn that finds it's way into soil can potentially become an oak, but it's more likely to be squirrel food or compost. That's why there is a separate word for "seed" than for "tree" just like there is a different word for "zygote" than person.

Backlight also provides some tips for the average person who wants to experiment with perspective from the comfort of their phone screen. Playing with elevation can be an easy way to gain some new perspective. For example, crouching down on the ground, or standing on top of a bench can have a huge impact on how your photos turn out. On the same note, you can change the angle of your camera too. Shooting from directly above something, or even underneath, can create much more interesting images than those shot straight on.

Note that it's shape is roughly trapezoidal, with the lower half wider than the upper. This is so the bottom will get enough light to keep making leaves and thus appear as a solid wall of leaves. If it were exactly square or rectangular the bottom wouldn't get enough light and would be scraggly and leafless at the bottom. I'm a plant nerd, and I approve this message 😁

Another great way to spice up your photos is to shoot your subject through a “frame.” This does not have to be a literal picture frame, although that can work too, but perhaps through an opening in a window, fence, plant, alleyway and more. This can be a great way to show off the subject of your picture, while providing a unique perspective that might have never been seen before.

I didn't have this surgery, but I did have eye surgery that involved cutting a small hole for fluid to drain out of. So small that my surgeon had to design his own tool because they don't make them that small! Thankfully he also had steady hands, or I would have been left with a hole that brought more fluid in rather than the reverse.

He shares that experimenting with shooting from a hidden perspective can give the illusion that the subject is unaware of the photo being taken. Or an overlap perspective, photographing multiple objects overlapping one another, can create unique photos as well. You might even try taking pictures from the subject’s point of view, making viewers feel as though they’re seeing what the subject could see.

This was an art installation in UK city Hull when it was European City of Culture. It was an amazing sight. The tip of the blade overhung the road so the cars and buses had to go under it.

What's even more incredible, is that they are made from fiberglass bound together with epoxy resin. So most blades end their lives in landfill or are incinerated.

I once saw three trucks on the highway, each one transporting a singular blade, much much longer than any other transport truck I had ever seen. Pretty cool to see though, I've only ever seen the wind turbines from a distance

Original lighthouses had a lamp and a bunch of mirrors to create enough light to be seen on awful days. The tower housed the family below. They have all been automatic for many decades now. Good for the one on snake island!

When it comes to deciding what perspective will be best for any photo, Cole recommends that photographers consider what they want audiences to take away from the pictures, what the best way to convey their message will be, whether or not they want the viewer to have a new perspective, and which angle will give them the results they’re aiming for. And while shooting, Cole says it’s important to look at the pictures from an unbiased viewpoint. The first thought that you, or your friends, have when seeing the picture is likely the first thought other audiences will have has well.

My first full time job was as a tech at a thirty lane alley. It’s really not that interesting once you’ve learnt how to service one machine it’s just 29 others that you have to do the same thing to, after that you’ve got to wash pins, wash A LOT of pins, clean and oil lanes on the early shift, fix ball returns that (idiot) customers have poured drinks into / dropped phones or wallets in and accept that your office / workshop is rarely quiet or vibration free.

They bred out a lot of the bitterness fairly recently. Bitter sprouts now tend to be ones that are overcooked. Try them sautéd with almonds and bacon.

As installed on a subfloor before a quickcrete layer is poured. If it’s in a concrete slab the radiant tubes are zip tied onto wire grids before pouring the slab.

Old technology. New technology uses heating wires embedded in a thermal plastic layer that is installed on top of the slab - with the added benefit that your tile will never crack due to cracking in the slab.

The white ball can also have metal inside(metal flakes or steel wire)and a magnet in the table pulls it off to the side on a small rail to seperate it from the others and older Dynamo tables had a slightly heavier ball that rolled on a small weight scale that would seperate it

In many places environmental code requires the tanks to be excavated if the facility will sit unused longer than 6 months. Prior to those codes being established abandoned tanks would be forgotten about, built over, and would wind up leaking various residues into the soil. When I was younger there was a huge cleanup effort because a large quantity of gasoline ended up in groundwater. Underground fuel tanks which had been abandoned in the 1960s that weren't on any survey plat or registered with the state were forgotten about. Eventually the tanks rusted out and leaked possibly hundreds of gallons of leaded gasoline. They had to transport huge amounts of soil to a landfill, and the government had to pick up the tab because the entities responsible for the former gas station were all defunct and the owners involved long dead.

Unlikely to be obsolete, but likely to be a specialty item for sure. You used to be able to pump premixed 2-stroke fuel and kerosene, but nowadays the vehicles that ran on those fuels are few and far between so you have to buy it in little cans.

"Lego" is the correct plural of Lego. Multiple individual items should be referred to as Lego Bricks or Pieces, but never as Legos with an S.

If it were meant to be pluralised, it would be Legoer, as that is how you do plurals in Danish. Lego is the company name. The correct word is bricks.

*LEGO. It's an acronym (Leg Godt). The plural of LEGO is LEGO. It is a mass noun, like water and butter. You don't say "this is what butters looks like when it is melted".

There was a piece on bbc news today stating that Lego have stopped looking into changing the plastic they use to a more environmentally friendly type as the new plastic would infact do more harm to the environment throughout its manufacture than the regular type, apparently it’s very hard to create a plastic that holds its shape and sturdiness for well forever like Lego bricks do

They are designed so that they can be driven over without rupturing. Fuel hose comes in various forms, but some of it has a core like this to strengthen it. They often put metal or fabric braiding on the outside of it to protect it from the heat of the engine.
