To learn more about these beautiful animals, we reached out to feline behavior and feeding coach Jennifer Van de Kieft, also known as the Cat Advocate.
She’s on a mission to provide cat guardians with strategies and tools to address behavior issues, better understand their feline companions, and strengthen the human-cat bond. She told Bored Panda that "some common misconceptions about cats are that they are aloof and the easy pet to care for. Cats are not aloof. Like any relationship, what you put into it is what you get out of it."
"If you do not provide affection and attention towards your cat, they may respond in kind. If you talk to your cat and provide attention, you'll find they are far from aloof and are loving and affectionate animals," Jennifer said.

It took us a long time post kittehs to learn bathroom skills again. My husband no longer has to sit because silly girl isn’t there to play with balls. Or curl up in my pants during a long IBS flare up. What’s an extra 10 minutes while she sleeps?

I had a big chair and an ottoman. When I would put my legs on it and have a blanket over it, instant kitty hammock. I would tuck the blanket under my hips and feet. Then we would watch movies until we both fell asleep. Eventually the hammock would fail and we would just wander to bed. Only to renew.

As soon as I take my clothes off to get in the shower my cat has to lay on them, she will scream at the door if I shut her out. She also has to come and check on me intermittently to make sure I'm not drowning in the bath.

The 4 - 5 month old pregnant stray that's made her home on my deck is off to be spayed, vaccinated and microchipped on Wednesday and the young adult male stray goes for neutering etc on Friday. They will still have a home at mine, healthy and happy.
"Another big misconception is that they are easy to care for compared with dogs," Jennifer Van de Kieft said. "'You provide water, food, and a clean litter box and they are good to go.' This is not true. Cats can thrive in captivity if provided with lots of enrichment."
"Since cats are designed to spend their waking hours hunting and foraging for food, providing exercise, challenges and other enrichment activities is part of being a cat guardian. They require more enrichment than most people realize. They are smart animals that need to have their minds engaged," the feline expert explained.

Not good at all. One of the reasons a kitty fountain is better than a static bowl is that they can see moving water a lot better. You'll sometimes see them dip a paw in the water to disturb the surface, so they can see how far away it is.

i had a cat that just did not mind water (some dont and some actually like it) so im taking a shower and Trillian (the cat) just pokes her head in i guess because i forgot to feed her and the water is pelting down on her and she is just meowing asking i stop and feed her. "whats this something my kind is notoriously scared of? don't care."

For those of us with less experience, cat body language might sometimes seem hard to read. Jennifer said, "Cats show affection by wanting to be near you, meowing at you and possibly rubbing up against you."
"Each cat is an individual in terms of how much touching they like. As a general rule, cats like high-frequency but low-intensity interactions, meaning they want to be near you, but don't necessarily want to be touched all the time."

Just as we don’t want cats to scratch our faces, they also have some no-nos when it comes to interacting with us. So if you meet one and want to make a good first impression, "do not approach or get too close as this may be frightening to the cat. Let the cat observe you from a distance," Van de Kieft said.
"Do not make direct eye contact as that can be viewed as aggressive," she added. "One of the best strategies is to ignore the cat and let the cat approach you. If the cat does approach, you can extend your hand or fingers, let the cat smell it, and decide if they want you to pet them. If they do, they may lean into your hand, which is a good sign that a small pet is acceptable."

I was once convinced that my cat had escaped my apartment and was gone. I looked everywhere and yelled for her at the top of my lungs. I was in a total panic. Then I got the bag of treats and shook it - and the little jerk came out from under a blanket right there in the living room.

I think about this often. My German Shepherd mix had distemper as a puppy and the virus damaged his adult teeth. Most of his teeth didn't grow in properly and are very damaged. I used to joke that he needed full-mouth doggy dentures XD He gets by just fine without teeth (he's only 2!) but it'd still be funny if I could get him metal dentures so he'd have shiny metal teeth XD

Our neighbor just adopted a couple of kittens. We are thinking of giving her our well made cat trees that have been vacant for a few years. I’m just not emotionally ready to get pets again, maybe never, but I didn’t want to let go and pandemic… But I also think those little fvckers will probably never sit in them😻 Maybe I’ll just give her the smol Amazon boxes.

I had to pay double deposit when I rented my flat. Because I had a hamster. In a blooming cage. A blooming hamster! Then my landlord said he thought I was joking since hamsters were for children! He did give me the money back though in the end lol

That sounds so cute! ;_; my old gray girl Wintressia grew up with my German Shepherd Ember when I was a teenager and they were best friends (90 lb dog, 8 lb cat!) I currently have two cats and two dogs, and both of the dogs (GSD mix and a Belgian Malinois) LOVE the cats, and the cats couldn't care less about them XD I'm sad because I want them all to be friends!
