People Are Explaining That What Happened To Texans Is Due To The Rich Being Greedy In 30 Posts
The massive winter storm that hit Texas and left millions without any power or heating is bringing the topic of how electricity is being regulated in the state to the forefront of the discussion. In short, the energy infrastructure in Texas isn’t made for cold snaps like the one that shook the southern US. And some people believe that capitalism exacerbated the problem, making the situation far, far worse because companies are competing for customers instead of investing in maintaining the infrastructure.
Among the other controversies, the (now former) mayor of Colorado City, Tim Boyd, has announced that he’s resigning because of a scathingly received post online. Boyd essentially left everyone to fend for themselves and stated that they can expect no help from the authorities.
Have a read through what people said about the situation in Texas online and what their opinions about the link between capitalism and the deadly outages are. Upvote the images that you agree with and be sure to share your own opinions with everyone in the comment section below, dear Readers.

A wind turbine manufacturer responded to Governor Abbott's nonsense saying that turbines can be ordered to be cold and heat resistant, but it costs about $20,000 extra. Texas is just cheap.

Fun fact: deregulation and initiatives from GOP stopped making power plants fit for winters also.
Fascinating that infrastructure affecting millions must be left alone for profit, but a private citizen's reproduction isn't left alone for any reason whatsoever, isn't it...

in general, this seems to be how the GOP does things. preach about how bad socialism is and how it's going to kill the country (also disregarding all of the systems already in place that are technically socialist) but then complain when they lose access to vital systems.
Texas relies on its own power grid. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, aka Ercot, manages it. A nonprofit corporation, it's still overseen by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, a state agency. Ercot decided to turn off power for millions of customers after the freezing temperatures shut down several of their power plants. It was either that or risk the collapse of the entire power grid.
Some people, from professors and experts to ordinary Americans and those directly affected by the cold, suggested that electricity deregulation is to blame for Texas’ inability to cope with the winter crisis. Meanwhile, others implied that what some Republicans warned would happen under socialism, in fact, happened under capitalism. In short, people are angry that the federal government isn’t overseeing the entire situation in Texas.
They prefer the *freedom* to let people starve to death, than being forced to contribute/pay taxes to keep their fellow human beings alive.
I personally, as an American, child of veterans, do not mind paying more taxes for infrastructure, education, and healthcare. It's just common sense. If you want E Pluribus Unum, you can't ignore the Pluribus.

I've found that true anywhere I've been in the world. The difference being, some people offload that whole "take care of things" onto their government (socialism) and can lack compassion without anyone being *hurt*!

A mayor from Colorado City Texas resigned because he posted on FB that the government and power companies owe you nothing and that if you're too lazy to figure out how to keep your family warm and find water you don't deserve a "handout". That's the GOP attitude in a nutshell. Hell, Ted Cruz abandoned us. They don't care unless you can give them money or power.

People on the Texas grid are also getting utility bills anywhere from a few thousand to $200,000… because there are no regulations to prevent such gouging.
A few months ago I saw a video that kind of suggested El Paso was getting screwed because they were contractually obligated to buy their power from a nuclear plant in Arizona at a higher rate than other cities in Texas were paying. Well, I guess they aren't complaining now.
People have quite literally always died for GOP philosophies, because said philosophies don't care if the many die as long as the few get to be billionaires.
Capitalism without regulations takes its supporters into seditious activities. Plenty of dollars can be made through takin care of people.

CNN reports that dozens of people across the southern US states have died because of the weather. The number of victims is at least 21. Meanwhile, the BBC writes that over 100 million Americans are under a winter weather warning; over 71 percent of the entire US was covered by snow by Wednesday afternoon.
As of Wednesday, there have been around 2.3 million power outages all over Texas, leaving around a quarter of the state with no access to electricity or heating. The situation is so dire, Texans are bringing in farm and wild animals into their homes to keep them warm while volunteers are rescuing sea turtles by the thousands so they don’t freeze to death.

MONEY TALKS and a lot of Texans will be hearing this message. Several companies that relocated to Texas from California have announced that they will leave Texas this year.
Some amount of capitalism is good and will raise the standard of living. It is unfettered, unregulated, "free" capitalism that causes the problem. The word "free" is the culprit. The flag-waving patriots hear the word "free" and think that always means something wonderful.
From what I can tell capitalism has created nothing but western chauvinism, neo-imperialism, massive greed, planned obsolescence and lowering of the poverty line with spin to look better. The fact that capitalist economist say $1.90 a day is "dragging people out of poverty" says it all. The US has literal food deserts, towns without drinking water or sanitation, hookworm outbreaks, lower child mortality rates and life expectancy than countries in South America; meanwhile Vienna is thriving. Capitalism has a lot of good propaganda and little else.

Fact: Per capita, tax dollars paid in the US federal system (federal only) are not distributed based upon contribution. At one point, a Rocky Mtn state was receiving almost two dollars in federal funding for every dollar paid in taxes. Where'd the extra dollar come from? Speaking from Europe here: That's how solidarity-based systems work and enables to even out differences in capacities and ressources. However, PEOPLE NEED TO BE EDUCATED ON THIS. I'm in Canada where we had the same -40 polar vortex with 45 mile an hour winds. We generate and maintain our power through a what is called a Capital Corporation, it is our province who makes the decisions for out grid, we are not beholden to any huge Federal intrusion (which is Texas excuse for it's current grid) all profits remain in the province and go to updating and maintaining the grid as well as other provincial expenses. The "federal oversight" scare tactics Texas politicians use to make individuals and private companies rich is shameless. Texas system was created with no responsibility to anything but profit. I hope this is a catalyst for some positive change, weather trends indicate this will become more frequent for the southern US time for the GOP, who has had complete control over Texas energy policy for 2 decade to step up or step down. They were warned this would happen in 2011 and ignored it for a decade. Unforgivable.
This is what the UCP is working toward in Alberta, Canada. Privatize everything, including our healthcare. Conservatives are so selfish and closed minded.

God, it is hard to comprehend how stupid some people are.
What the hell IS the government's responsibility supposed to be? Caring for their people is the most important thing they are being paid for! And the power providers? Does he think people pay the power providers for fun or out of the goodness of their hearts? OF COURSE providing stuff and keeping structures up/maintaining is their job! Honestly: people have been specializing and centralizing for thousands of years throughout societies, which is why we nowadays don't have to spend our time whittling our own spoons for soup, refining our own gas or installing our own plumbing, ffs. Expecting people in a city (small apartments, shops everywhere,...) to be prepared and store resources for a once-in-a-lifetime emergency is ridiculous

Load More Replies...The argument, as some experts put it, is simple: even though winter snaps like this one are rare, the power infrastructure in Texas needs to be overhauled, improved, and upgraded to ensure that it functions in times of crisis. What’s more, there are calls for more regulation of the electricity market so that the infrastructure is properly maintained.
As Rebecca Goetz, an associate professor of history at NYU puts it, deregulation might lead to lower prices for the consumers (i.e. us because we’re choosing the suppliers ourselves, thus making everyone compete for our attention by lowering their prices), but it also leads to confusion. Your electricity supplier might not be the company that fixes your grid when something happens to it. Furthermore, maintenance fees aren’t enough to maintain the infrastructure. Or, in other words, you get what you pay for.
It's so cold out that the food wasn't going to spoil *outside*, that's for sure. I wish the market had done what ours did when we had a huge power outage a few years ago: Just gave it away as people asked for it. Corporate insurance covered the loss. Why not let the food go as needed, not to waste/ *sigh*

Climate change is NOT a hoax!! I have never seen a winter like this in my life and Im in my fifties. Its getting hotter every year and it's scary to us. The summers are hotter, the winters are hotter, the wind is stronger etc. Texans should prepare for these winters in the future by any means because this is not going to get any better.
I live in the northern hemisphere and we are lucky enough to use water power plants because we are blessed with water everywhere but we are still in the process of putting up wind turbines. Also we are a socialized society and therefore pay higher taxes but WOW how grateful we are the more I watch how the US society is functioning. The corruption is mind blowing!!

It's a shame that voter's memory are so short . . . need to remember this for the next election(s), and the next, and the next . . .

Took me about an hour to get in on Tuesday. I heard about the 15 item limit from a nearby friend, but they didn't seem to have it when I went. I got about 30 things and went through self checkout (10 items or fewer), and nobody said anything. The people who work at HEB are simply amazing. It's a great store. Somehow they manage to restock every shelf every night, even during this sh*tshow.
The 15-item limit reminds me of the years that I could afford no more than 15 items in a grocery store at any one time. I was working full-time. It was just that my rent was so high. The whole system needs changing. This is just more evidence.
Either way, there were a lot of different historical periods thorough the URSS history. And there were a lot of different places, with specific characteristics and problems. It is, however, not debatable that the Ksar Era were FAR worse in terms of life quality than the lives under in the Soviet Union period. The URSS, for most people, was an extreme life improvement comparing to what it had been before. You could say that capitalism maybe would be better for them, but you cannot compare countries and time periods without considering their different circumstances
Hey folks-this is only temporary. My daughters are both in TX and said yesterday that other than bottled water, everything has pretty much been restocked. I am pretty sure that doesn't happen in actual socialist countries!
For five years we've been demonizing Venezuela for looking like this. I wonder if hte Venezuelans are laughing or crying about it?
Tis typical for capitalist profiteers to blame others for their own faults. ie. trumpeteers rioting and blaming those who're not present.
According to history expert Goetz, Texans prefer cheap electricity to a reliable infrastructure that’s able to efficiently tough out heat spikes, as well as cold snaps. And before you ask, the technology for making tech (including renewable tech like wind turbines, as well as traditional energy sources like natural gas) resistant to the cold does exist. It’s all a question of how much companies want to invest into upgrading the current infrastructure and what the cost of that would be.
And to the wrong people. :( Texans suffer for their incompetence, not them.

Load More Replies...There are some key differences between California and Texas in this. California had deadly outcomes from wildfires caused by the impact of high wind on electrical lines in some places. Our utilities have been mandated to fix the issue because we do not find that to be acceptable. While that happens, there are some areas that are subject to power cutoffs during fire season if the conditions are significantly hot and dry, and the winds are strong. Potential cutoffs are announced ahead of time to allow people to prepare. As the utilities do the work, those shutoffs have gotten smaller and shorter. Are power shutoffs good? No, but they save lives. Is change happening? Yes. It's going to take years, but at least it's happening. Texas has had issues with cold weather taking down their power supply before, leading to fatalities. FERC told them like a decade ago what they needed to do. They haven't mandated the power companies do anything. Apparently some folks dying is acceptable to them.
I'm so done with politicians "tweeting". Just go and do your f*****g job. Stay off the internet and do some actual research, you clueless numpties.
They don't get that not all of California was without power. L.A. was just fine. The statewide mandate to have solar on more new construction will pay dividends over decades.
I live in California. The fires have been so bad these last few years because we keep having hurricane force winds during peak fire season. They shut the power off because power lines blow down left and right. I live on a well, so when I dont have power, I dont have running water. It feels really great every year living off the grid for weeks, watching the fires get closer to my house, and have my (former) president tell me that it's my fault for not "raking my leaves"

The situation in Texas isn’t black-and-white. Everyone’s looking for someone to blame, but the situation is raising a lot of vital questions that might affect Texas and the rest of the US in the future, not just in the context of winter storms.
Let me play devil’s advocate for a moment here. Spending more money on upgrading the state’s power infrastructure is a good idea because it ensures that people have heating and electricity in times of crisis like during this rare cold snap. However, there are practical considerations to take into account. You might cold-proof your infrastructure, but where do we draw the line? Do we need to ensure it’s protected from every possible and rare eventuality?
What do you mean "every ten years?" It's literally a daily occurrence, ffs.
It's socialism under the guise of capitalism. In Socialism, you don't put up reserves for a rainy day, and make sure that your business can survive long-term to provide a steady and growing source of income like you do in Capitalism. Socialism, is the short-term maximisation of output with minimal input, with punitive recourse if the goals are not met. Don't believe me? Look at all the socialist states throughout time, that has come and gone, where the elite has milked the people, their businesses and the resources dry, leaving nothing behind. USSR, Cuba, Korea, Venezuela and many many others, where the society fails and you end up in wars, unless curbed by a dictatorial "management". Capitalist states tend to go on for many generations, where bad companies gets wiped out, and good companies thrive. Enron is one of many examples. If it had been a proper capitalism with a protective state, the banks would never have been bailed out, the savers would have been covered.
The power authorities in Texas should be BILLED for the aid needed, and SUED INTO THE GROUND for the deaths that occurred.
Socialism is defined by the state's involvement in the redistribution of resources (including funds) from those who can pay to those who need it. If capitalism worked, "The Market" would have ensured that none of this happened

It's the exact same shortsightedness that makes fossil fuel companies want to drill and destroy in National Parks - land that should be free for all to enjoy. The fossil fuels will run out in a matter of decades at best, but the ecosystems and landscapes will have been wrecked for centuries and some species driven to extinction, so the land can never be returned to its natural state. All destroyed so the rich people who own the fossil fuel companies and the politicains who take their money and sign the leases, can make more money.
Again . . . all this goes back to the voters. Everyone looks for a bargain until it bites them in the ass . . .
I’m all for spending more to stay safe and have a reliable system. It’s vital to do. But at some point, ordinary Texans will be asking whether money’s being flushed down the drain by investing in upgrades that might be ‘useless.’ People tend to invest in what they think is likely to happen and that’s a very human thing to do. How much is too much? Where do we draw the line?
Don’t forget that the companies will have to heavily invest in maintaining the new infrastructure. And though that will ensure that some people will have steady work, it would mean that electricity costs would increase for the average citizen. Is everyone prepared to pay more? Some, of course. Especially in the interests of a reliable system. But not everyone. How do you get a consensus when people feel very passionately about their opinions that don't mesh well together?

There’s another issue here as well. Greater influence of the federal government could help maintain the infrastructure and ensure that what we’re seeing in Texas right now doesn’t happen again. But here’s the rub: Americans venerate self-reliance and independence. Being overly reliant on the federal government (as opposed to the state government) isn’t something that comes naturally to a lot of Americans, especially Texans who have a long and proud history.

The age of a transformer is entirely meaningless so long as it has not been damaged. It's just an iron core and a coil of wire, and will remain-so indefinitely. As long as that transformer was operating within its rated output capacity, there was no need to do ANYTHING with it. I think you've been sucked into the fallacy that everything must be "new" because "new" is somehow superior. A 500kVA transformer (operational) is a 500kVA transformer (operational), regardless of its age. All that really matters is rating and condition, age is irrelevant.
Totally agree. Furthermore, no one has forced any of the Texan residents to actually pick the company that supplied the cheapest electricity and/or chose profit over service. Such a system is only upheld if the vast majority op people buy into it. Blaming your government for a system that actually only survives by the choices of the masses is classical "blame everyone else but yourself" behavior. As with anything in a free economy, premium brands/services can only exist if the consumer is actually concerned about the premium. At this moment, it looks like in the past decades, the only thing Texan residents where concerned about is getting their electricity from the cheapest provider...

Tesla is moving to Texas. They make home solar products. Coincidence?
Well, one small consolation, the profits will be down, very, very down
One thing springs to mind.... 'The fable of the ant and the grasshopper' ;o(
Much like the Socialist programs of the New Deal, the Socialist bailouts in ‘08 & ‘09, it’s gonna take another dose of Socialist stimulus programs to keep the finger in the dike of capitalism. It won’t be enough to save the failing system but we’ll have to find out the hard way. America has been in steady decline ever since JFK was killed.
My neighbor has a sign posted in his yard that reads "taxation is theft." It's posted literally right next to the fire hydrant. Which is paid for by taxes. Ugh.
And Texas doesn’t suffer economic sanctions from USA that make it poor, as far as I know…
The USA imposes to Texas the outdated doctrine of extreme capitalism!

When I was in elementary school they used to show people staring at empty shelves in Russia telling us “this is life under communism”. I’m reminded of those old films every time I go grocery shopping at my local WalMart. Lots of empty shelves even in good weather. When did OK become communist? I must’ve missed that.
Do you think that capitalism is to blame for the situation in Texas, dear Readers? If not, do you think that the deregulation of the electricity market made the situation worse? How do you think the system should be reformed? Do you think that relying on the government more is a good idea in the long-term? Share your thoughts in the comment section below. And those of you currently affected by the cold—stay warm, you have our support.
uh yeah. Capitalism is about screwing the working class to increase profits for the wealthy, so of course it worked as designed
And to think, he could've been a hero if he just said nothing, rolled up his sleeves, and simply helped some of his constituents. You know, think outside the box.
Rolling up your sleeves and helping some one else out? That is *not* the republican way.

In addition, the people are not allowed to ask for help, but the state is begging for federal funds as if the feds owe them something?? And what the heck is the government for if not the people??
He's lucky those citizens didn't come for him with pitchforks & torches.
Perhaps they should sue him for his wages gained as mayor as he fundamentally misunderstands that they paid him and he did not provide the service he promised which was to be the mayor. Their taxes paid his wages and taxes are basically what they paid the government to provide services and if he didn't do what was expected, they deserve a refund.
He's now complaining about his wife losing her job and income. So his entire family was supported with tax dollars and he's angry it's no longer so. Well, be resourceful, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, if you're strong, you'll survive, of course while turning down any public unemployment assistance.
P.S. to the former Mayor of Colorado City, "you" cannot "harass myself". Only I can harass myself and I choose not to do so. If you don't understand this, ask an English teacher.
Well he wasn't a scholar or particularly good at much but sound bites.. It isn't a philosophy my dear, it is a failure of education - and ignorance is desirable because it is exploitable.
Gotta be able to fight back with sound bites, though -- most thinking is "System1" style (see Kahneman, Tversky, Thaler, Lakoff, et al.) & people are strongly motivated by that kind of argument - simplistic, emotional, intuitive. It's sad but true. Progressives must message better!

They never mind asking for bailouts from the rest of the country. Check out insurance rates for Texas, they have so many disasters the cost of insurance is skyrocketing.
American here. I like my freedoms, thank you very much. I like democracy. Yes, TX has a problem, a big one at that. There are 50 states last time I checked. Texans have the right to vote and make changes. I bet they do too after this fiasco. Americans are not stupid, evil, or brainwashed for wanting their freedom. You want to be socialist, be socialist. Move to a socialist country. Have at it. But the US is a democracy. Nothing is free from problems. Sounds like the monopoly laws need enforcing in TX.
Breaking News!!! CEO lies to board of directors about his incompetence.
Has anyone noticed that Biden did NOT tell Texans they can't have federal aid because they didn't vote for him? Unlike Trump when California was on fire...
I'm sorry that this is happening in the US. I live in East Europe and when covid started, all utilities companies didn't shut anyone off for not paying bills, bills were delayed for months, they worked non stop so that we could have everything and not pay... and we weren't freezing or anything like that. Banks delayed all payments for mortgages and stuff for the year, so people would have money to eat and not lose their homes/cars. I cannot understand why the US thinks it's such a great country, when so many people are suffering and are being denied basic needs.
I'm in the UK and the energy company I was on at the time let people reduce their direct debits to a much lower amount than they would normally allow. One time I couldn't pay my water bill on time. The water company was very understanding and said not to worry, pay it when I could (within reason) and they would not cut me off.

BUT these things that Republicans claim will take you into communism will NOT cause that. Government regulations of important industry sectors and free health care and similar things work for many countries in Europe. Even the ones that were never communist to begin with. Our country still has all of it and it works great for us. I am very thankful to live in my country that is safe, gives me free healthcare and education and I am more than ready to pay my taxes and contribute after I finish school. The issue is not so much capitalism as much as it is neoliberalism, a kind of radical capitalism where everything is about money. Reagan introduced and starting imposing neoliberal ideology onto the US, i.e a system that proposed small government and where money is the only thing that matters. Neoliberalism favour the rich and believes that rich people are better human being than middle class and poor people and with neoliberalism, a swim or sink mentality is prevalent. Neoliberalism is a policy model that encompasses both politics and economics and seeks to transfer the control of economic factors from the public sector to the private sector. Many neoliberalism policies enhance the workings of free market capitalism and attempt to place limits on government spending, government regulation, and public ownership
