Money might be the root of all evil, but we still need it. It helps us afford necessities and adds comfort to our lives. Conversely, the emptier our pockets and bank accounts get, the more challenging our days become. It can be hard to believe, but you're not a failure if they run dry; there are so many things out of our control. So to remind everyone that we're in this economy together, we at Bored Panda compiled a list of funny and accurate posts about (personal) finance, courtesy of this subreddit. Keep striving, stay resilient!

In Canada we pay for prescriptions, but my antidepressants are $18 a month. I meet with my doctor once a month. My employer pays for my twice-a-week counselling appointments through my employee benefit plan. My total bill for mental health care is $18 a month. I wish everyone could have it this easy :( we all deserve good health care.

Reading is honestly so beneficial :) those people that type things like “should of” instead of “should have” is often an indication that they haven’t read a lot of books. People who spell words correctly but pronounce them incorrectly is usually a sign that they learned that word from a book first :) scammers these days are actually relying on mildly illiterate people to not be able to notice small spelling errors in their emails or text messages that would give the scammer away….and those poor folks with a low literacy level tend to fall for scams at a much higher rate :( it’s really uncool

I started renting my apartment 5 years ago at just over $700/month. They can only raise my yearly rent at inflation rates as per my contract so I’m currently paying just over $800. The exact identical apartment across the hall from me just got rented out for $1490. Most of my neighbours are paying $1200 or more. For an identical apartment to mine. I’m so lucky but also very annoyed on their behalf. Eventually the strata will find a way to charge me $1200+ but for now I’m lucky as hell.

Remember the border bill the US GOP begged for…..then voted against it and shut it down because they were scared it might make their political opponent in the upcoming election look good? 🙄 sounds like a party that truly cares about the people and country and not their own personal career interests at all.

As long as they have the people locked into crippling debt, what else matters? The rich get richer and the poor get f**ked over every time. Think for a minute that maybe a bright, disadvantaged kid of had the inkling of the cure for cancer but couldn't get a scholarship because of their gender, disability, colour or religion? The crushing debt applied by institutions of higher learning and government is quite happy to forgo humanity saving intelligence, because there is no money in it for them.

Good point! NZ citizens probably weren’t as scared of their government offering social welfare as some other certain countries though, so it wasn’t a big scary deal to them to receive benefits. I bet it helped them out so much during covid.

Honestly. I donated $1 to some charity at McDonalds and then got mad at myself - companies are just words on paper but humans are real, why can’t the humans that run McDonalds use their massive profits to help other humans out? Solve some hunger issues they probably helped cause or something?

OP is broke but can afford dsily pizza? Don't know what the pizza cost there, here it is a minimum of €12 plus delivery = €15 to €16 for the cheapest one. For the price of one delivered pizza I can buy the ingredients for 7 days of home made pizza.

The point of sale donation or "round it up" option that people can use at check-out can NOT be used as a tax write-off by the corporation. It's sequestered into a different account and quite often is matched by the participating company. The charities are chosen by the company and they receive around 90% of the donations as opposed to most professional fundraising companies where maybe 15% of the money raised is given to the charity.

When you donate through a company like that, they take the tax deduction. When YOU donate directly, you get the deduction. Or you would if Trump hadn't changed the tax laws.

No, they can not take the deduction. The customer still could take it, but the amount is so high no one but rich people bothers trying.

My favorite Domino's campaign was #FreesNotFees, it was entirely about how they don't charge "surprise" fees. OK but like I still have to pay $6 delivery charge plus tip, so WTF are u really bragging about, not lying to people??? is that the bar we've got now, companies celebrating about not lying to customers?🤦‍♀️

This one makes me crazy. Every Loblaws (Canada's biggest grocery store) constantly fixes prices as high as they can manage while trying to pass off a wholesome image. But they all ask for a $2 donation on EVERY transaction. Interestingly they can't get a tax deduction for that, as they have to co-partner with a charity for an at-the-till style donation. How do they get around it? They form their own charity that they then give the money to and then find creative ways to partner with that charity in other ways that give actual tax deductions.

If you donate to a charity through a corporation like Domino's or your local grocery store, they bundle all the donations together, donate in their name, and take it as a tax write-off. Yep, you just helped that corporation make more money. Donate locally.

The best is that they get to claim your donations as their own, write them off, and have a great PR scheme. NEVER 'round it up' for charity.

They can not claim a customer's donation. The people claiming that do not know what they're talking about.

What I saw in France: the CEO of a company with €1.000.000.000 yearly turnover going to a supermarket, doing the pitch to customers and telling them that for each €1 they spend on her company product, her company would send the same amount to a NGO helping people (mostly poor ones). This is done every year (involving not only the CEO but lot of employees) and allows the NGO to get around €200-300k each time. The company calls this kind of action "giving back to society".

I donate if the company in question promises to match the donations. Otherwise, yeah, they can go F themselves.

I had a college math professor that would teach you how to do the math after the assignment. He would give the homework with no instruction. have us turn it in, then teach how to do it. Then, he would grade you to see if you had figured it out on your own and the grade would stand. I dropped that class after 2 weeks.

Taxes create the fiscal space for governments to spend without driving inflation. They are not needed to "pay for" stuff, the government just credits accounts for that, just as taxation involves debiting accounts. The two are not directly connected under a fiat currency. Nice study here about UK government finances that explains this in great detail: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/public-purpose/sites/bartlett_public_purpose/files/the_self-financing_state_an_institutional_analysis_of_government_expenditure_revenue_collection_and_debt_issuance_operations_in_the_united_kingdom.pdf
