Money might be the root of all evil, but we still need it. It helps us afford necessities and adds comfort to our lives. Conversely, the emptier our pockets and bank accounts get, the more challenging our days become. It can be hard to believe, but you're not a failure if they run dry; there are so many things out of our control. So to remind everyone that we're in this economy together, we at Bored Panda compiled a list of funny and accurate posts about (personal) finance, courtesy of this subreddit. Keep striving, stay resilient!

In Canada we pay for prescriptions, but my antidepressants are $18 a month. I meet with my doctor once a month. My employer pays for my twice-a-week counselling appointments through my employee benefit plan. My total bill for mental health care is $18 a month. I wish everyone could have it this easy :( we all deserve good health care.

In Australia, we pay for prescriptions up to a certain amount per year, and then they're free, paid for by the govt. Personally, we're just about to hit that level, at the end of March, and our scrips will be free thereafter.

The US should be ashamed of itself of having, well, actually, NOT having a decent health care system.

I don't know of any of us who are proud of it. It is a serious problem for most, and is getting worse. How do you vote for a national healthcare reform when there are absolutely NO politicians willing to advocate for it? They aren't even discussing it, it's not even on the radar.

I'm in the US and I have health insurance that my employer pays for. Most of my prescriptions are free or at most $10. I pay $20 to see my primary doctor and $35 to see a specialist. Yes, I'm very lucky. Everyone in the country should have the same thing.

Where I live, my statins are free, my diabetes medications is also free, my annual eye-test is free. When my depression kicks in.... my anti-depressants are also free, as is my therapy, should I need it. I pay 20% tax on income. I am not in the US.

I think it depends on where you live. Am I saying all American health care systems are good? Nope. I've had strep like 5 times this school year. It keeps coming back. Went to the clinic & got a perscription that finally worked. It took like 1.5 hours from start to finish. Cost like $23 for the perscription & the visit was free.

USA here. I pay $35 for the doctor visit, $65 for specialists, about $10 for prescriptions, ER visit ($11k+ on the itemized bill) cost me $350, BUT $675 per month for the insurance that enables that. If something terrible happens I could be on the hook for $8500 per year and STILL have to pay that $675/mo.

I needed emergency doctor visit for infection while visiting my home country, Czech Republic. As I am not resident there the doctor apologized profusely about having to charge me and told me what paperwork to fill to claim the money back when I’m back in UK. The charge was 300 CZK. About £12. Plus the cost of prescribed medication which was another £12 or so.

I had a freak kitchen accident this past (US) summer while visiting Australia. I was airlifted to a hospital with a burn unit, spent 3 days in the ICU, and had 2 surgeries. Total out-of-pocket cost: approx $8k USD. I had a third surgery in the US and spent one night in the hospital. Total cost with insurance: approx. $23k USD.

I've asked this before but never really got much of an answer, what does a US person pay (no health insurance) if they go to a standard GP (general practise doctor) because they have a bad cold/flu and they need a checkup and maybe antibiotics if it's actually an infection?

I live in Pennsylvania, and a recent visit for a non-emergent, "routine" problem was $170.00 for 10 minutes of the doctor's time. This cost does not include the price of any lab work ($325.00), nor any accompanying prescription medications.

Doctor visits in the US are anywhere from $120 up to unimaginable prices when you get to specialists. It depends on where you're seeing the doctor but usually a general doctor calls out around $300. Prescriptions vary widely depending on what medications and where you get them but definitely more than 10 Euros for 2 of them. It health system is ridiculous. Maybe people just don't go unless it's unavoidable.

If you're privately insured in Germany, you have to pay the entire cost upfront before having it reimbursed. That price is about right, healthcare doesn't need to be as expensive as in the US.

The personal income tax rates in France is 55.5%. Nothing is free. Someone is paying. Do you really think a 35 euro visit covers salaries and expenses. They are supplemented with tax money.

France has progressive tax rates, beginning at 0% for low-income and gradually increasing through four additional tax brackets, with even the highest bracket being less than 55.5%. I'm uncertain where you got that number, but it's most likely from a dark and stinky part of your body. Also, it's widely known that universal healthcare is both more cost-effective and typically of higher quality. So stop spreading this nonsense.

Reading is honestly so beneficial :) those people that type things like “should of” instead of “should have” is often an indication that they haven’t read a lot of books. People who spell words correctly but pronounce them incorrectly is usually a sign that they learned that word from a book first :) scammers these days are actually relying on mildly illiterate people to not be able to notice small spelling errors in their emails or text messages that would give the scammer away….and those poor folks with a low literacy level tend to fall for scams at a much higher rate :( it’s really uncool

I started renting my apartment 5 years ago at just over $700/month. They can only raise my yearly rent at inflation rates as per my contract so I’m currently paying just over $800. The exact identical apartment across the hall from me just got rented out for $1490. Most of my neighbours are paying $1200 or more. For an identical apartment to mine. I’m so lucky but also very annoyed on their behalf. Eventually the strata will find a way to charge me $1200+ but for now I’m lucky as hell.

As long as they have the people locked into crippling debt, what else matters? The rich get richer and the poor get f**ked over every time. Think for a minute that maybe a bright, disadvantaged kid of had the inkling of the cure for cancer but couldn't get a scholarship because of their gender, disability, colour or religion? The crushing debt applied by institutions of higher learning and government is quite happy to forgo humanity saving intelligence, because there is no money in it for them.

Good point! NZ citizens probably weren’t as scared of their government offering social welfare as some other certain countries though, so it wasn’t a big scary deal to them to receive benefits. I bet it helped them out so much during covid.

I had a college math professor that would teach you how to do the math after the assignment. He would give the homework with no instruction. have us turn it in, then teach how to do it. Then, he would grade you to see if you had figured it out on your own and the grade would stand. I dropped that class after 2 weeks.

Taxes create the fiscal space for governments to spend without driving inflation. They are not needed to "pay for" stuff, the government just credits accounts for that, just as taxation involves debiting accounts. The two are not directly connected under a fiat currency. Nice study here about UK government finances that explains this in great detail: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/bartlett/public-purpose/sites/bartlett_public_purpose/files/the_self-financing_state_an_institutional_analysis_of_government_expenditure_revenue_collection_and_debt_issuance_operations_in_the_united_kingdom.pdf
