Baker Darci told us all about the main major mistakes that people tend to do when making cakes. "I would probably say the most common mistakes are wrong order of ingredients added in to the recipe. Very important for baking as it’s a science!" she pointed out that we have to be very meticulous when baking.

Darci added that not weighing ingredients, as well as over- and under-mixing them can also be problematic. "All of these small factors can make or break the cake!"

According to the Canadian baker, the line between good and bad cakes becomes blurred if you overload them by adding too many unnecessary details. "I prefer simple designs and simple details. I feel like you can have a beautiful cake and go overboard with too much—flowers, candy, colors, textures. It can be a fine line between too much and not enough."

There’s also a Cakes With Threatening Auras Instagram page, but it has just over 5.8k fans. So it looks like most cursed cake lovers can be found over on Twitter rather than IG.

The CWTA page first popped up on Twitter in January 2020 and has been documenting awful, truly awful examples of cake fails ever since.

We’re pretty sure that some of these cakes were made to be intentionally bad. At least we hope. However, others were the results of clumsy mistakes (and maybe Fate messing with some unfortunate bakers). So here are some cake-baking tips to keep in mind so that you can avoid giving your baked goods threatening auras with icing.

Baking cakes is exactly like brewing potions at Hogwarts: you have to follow the instructions exactly, otherwise, you’ll mess things up. Unless you’re the Half-Blood Prince, don’t go about improvising. If the recipe says to add half a cup of sugar, don’t plop in a dozen teaspoons of caramel. You can experiment when you’ve got the basics down tight.

You should also try to avoid using stale baking powder and baking soda, according to The Spruce Eats. If you have any left at home that’s older than half a year, toss it out and get some new products. Otherwise, your cake might turn out to be a flop. This is where the importance of proper labeling comes in.

Something else to keep in mind is to not use cold ingredients. We know that you’re ready to make that amazing cake, but wait for your butter to warm up, so you won’t have globby chunks when you mix your ingredients.
