40 Things People ‘Bought For Life’ And They Didn’t Disappoint (New Pics)
Buyer beware! A century-old adage that still remains very much true today. In our highly commercialized world, there are so many cheaply produced products wrapped in attractive packaging that likely cause owners nothing but trouble. Whether we’re talking about planned obsolescence, poor-quality manufacturing, companies taking shortcuts while thinking beyond profits, or consumers falling victim to misleading bargains, it’s frustrating to see products break down in mere seconds.
But what if you find such a high-quality product that you never need to buy that item again? Ever? For the rest of your life?! Here’s where the 'Buy It For Life' (BIFL) subreddit comes in. With over 1.3 million members, it's dedicated to "practical, durable and quality made products that are made to last". Think of a toaster from the 1920s. Or a refrigerator that celebrated its 99th birthday this month!
Below, we hand-picked some of the most interesting and surprising photos of things that stood the test of time and continue to serve people for years to come. So continue scrolling through to enjoy this inspiring collection, be sure to upvote your favorite pics, and let us know if you own any long-lasting items you only bought once in the comments below.
Psst! When you’re finished with this list, more of the same goods can be found in Bored Panda’s previous posts on the same feature here: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

1949 Caloric Ultra-Matic Gas Range. Got It For $20 And It’s Used Daily. Everything Works!
This article is a great example of the relatively new idea of planned obsolescence.
My folks and extended family used to sit around the kitchen table and talk about planned obsolescence back in the'50s. It is not a relatively new idea. There were other subjects, too. Like teacher's salaries, war, corrupt politicians.
Load More Replies...It's because it brings you back in time with something so relevant to current time I think.

My paternal grandparents had that and everything except the clock worked for as long as they had that house (early 1990's).
Our Son's Nanny Just Received Her Master's Degree, And We Wanted To Get Her Something Special. My Wife Found This 1980's Coach Briefcase, And I Did A Full Restoration
I do, too. They can be a bit heavy though. The awesome thing about vintage Coach is you can machine wash them. The heavy old leather cleans up pretty nicely and dries out just fine.
Load More Replies...i have no sense of fashion whatsoever, but even i can tell that this is beautiful
My mother has that same one, it's still in great condition. Their bags were so much nicer before they started plastering the logo all over every surface.
What happens in the restoration process? Did he simply wipe it off and dye it a different color?
At least from outside, it looks like it. Bit of oil/fat and maybe a shine, but it's possible that he fixed stuff inside, too.

Load More Replies..."Durable, Quality, Practical": this is the tagline that the 'Buy It For Life' subreddit greets its members with. As the person who founded this online community, user Petrarch1603, detailed in their mission statement, the group initially started off as a spin-off of the 'Shut Up And Take My Money' sub.
"I noticed that sometimes there are high-quality useful products there that I'm interested in buying," they explained. "Unfortunately, I also noticed a lot of gimmicks [and] cheaply made products there too. Nevertheless, this is a great reddit and I would like this reddit to be a companion to SUTMM."
However, since BIFL was founded in 2011, it has become more than twice the size of its predecessor. The forum "is intended to fill a niche for only high-quality and durable products," the user added. And a brief scroll through this proves the members certainly deliver.
108 Years Old And 54 Years Old Boots - Just In Case You Think Boots Can't Last You A Lifetime
That's the point. They're so well made, they look like new. Also, taking good care of your boots really makes a difference. I have no doubt that these were really well cared for.
Load More Replies...You definitely can't feel the cobbles of Merchant Street with these boots!
Load More Replies...Those boots may be old but they are definitely not well worn-which they would be, if they were actually worn as regularly as the person claims. I have some really old shoes that came from my grandfather and great grandfather, they show wear, because they were actually worn regularly. The wear and tear on the boots in the picture is just not on par with shoes that have actually been worn much at all, no matter how much care is taken with them. You can't eliminate wear and tear on tread and soles without completely replacing them.
Replacing soles is part of taking care of them, though. I don't think OP meant they have needed zero maintenance...just that it can be done. Most people probably don't put that much stock into doing leather maintenance and repair, or putting new soles on otherwise good shoes, but with the history behind these, it was probably worth the effort to preserve.
Load More Replies...If those are Imperial Austrian army boots they would not be in that condition today. Either they were spare boots that he hardly wore or the OP is telling porkies. Soldiers lived, marched and fought in those types of boots. They would usually almost mould to the legs and feet of the soldier. Granted they can be re-soled over the years but there appears to be no sign of any age or wear on the rest of the boot.
They made boots and shoes back then that could be completely resoled and repaired. They also had shoe and boot repair shops. They were called Cobblers and repaired boots and shoes. Now they are just made disposable like a bic lighter and the Cobbler has gone the way of the dinosaur! Extinct.
Looks like various parts have been replaced over time so wonder how much of it is original. I'd like to make a reference to Trigger's broom to my fellow UK people who are fans of classic sitcoms.
My Girlfriend’s Grandma Gave Us This Kitchenaid From The Mid 80’s. It’s In Almost Perfect Condition Except For A Few Scuffs That Give It Some Character. It Still Has The Manual, All Original Attachments, And It Works Flawlessly
The older model Kitchen Aids were built to last--real work-horses. Not so sure about the ones made today.
I was super disappointed when I read what people had to say about the KitchenAid mixers being sold today. Instead I bought a vintage Bosch Universal, it works flawlessly, can mix up SO MUCH dough, and takes up less counter space
Load More Replies...That is kitchenaid for you! My mother has one that she got as wedding present in the 64. She still uses it (and sometimes I do too).
The design of this makes it look older than it is. I recently went to pick up a Kenwood Chef for my gf which was also from the 80s. The shame is the my mum parted with her one from the 70s not that long ago when they moved house. Those things are built like tanks!
My mother still has her 1966 Kenwood. She bought a stainless steel bowl in the 70s because she was convinced that the original glass one wouldn't last. She still has both...
Load More Replies...i bought a new kitchenaid a few years ago, i hope they still make em to last!
Ah! I can still see my Mom using one to make a cake when I was a little girl.
122 Year Old Pocket Watch My Grandfather Gifted Me, Still Works Like A Charm With Original Internals
I have a ladies pocket watch from 1887 from my grandmother. It winds with a key. Still works!
I have my Omega hand watch for 25 years now, still looks and works perfect
Just … wow … and now it will be your turn in time to hand it down so you Sir are now the keeper of history.
Previously, one of the moderators who takes care of the sub was kind enough to share what commonly shared products they see on the forum. "The most popular items I see based on what's posted are: Stanley Thermos, Darn Tough Socks, Kitchen Aid mixers, Red Wing boots, and pots and pans, particularly cast iron," they told Bored Panda.
We were also curious to learn what factors allow these items to persevere for as long as they do. "I'm not an expert by any means but I think there are a few factors," they said.
"Most products are built to be as cheap as possible .... and poorly assembled (maybe partly due to planned obsolescence but mostly just due to the fact that people in general like spending less). The products that you see lasting longer are often made of higher-quality material and care when built. But they're also priced accordingly."
The First Tractor My Great Great Grandfather Bought To Replace His Horses. 1927 Mccormick Deering 10-20 Still Running Strong
I played on one of these when I was a kid(it was no longer operational) and the metal seat isn't really that bad, it hugs your butt 😃
Load More Replies...My grandfather had a tractor very similar to this one for decades. It was blue, and we would take our whole family on hayrides around our farm whenever we would get together on the weekends. At one point he got really sick with cancer, and one of his hospice nurses tricked him into selling it when she was alone with him and he was delirious. The men in our family that still used it to take care of the farm were livid. That was a good 15 years ago. Our grandfather ended up making a miraculous recovery and living a few years after that, but he never got over that tractor. He talked about missing that old indestructible blue tractor until his dying day!
I have a 1959 Massey Ferguson. Still runs. My dad has it. It's kind of his tinker toy. I use a newer John Deere for our cattle farm

Did anyone notice that it has a handle it’s a waffle suitcase! I know you’re not supposed to hold it like that but dammit I am

I have one almost like this except the waffle grids come out and has a flat griddle on the opposite side.
Unfortunately, a lot of today’s products are built with planned obsolescence in mind. This phenomenon refers to various strategies that make a product seem undesirable, useless, and unwanted. According to Andrea Soke, co-founder of Durability Matters, there are four types of planned obsolescence that companies use to make a profit: contrived durability (when parts break down intentionally), software updates, perceived obsolescence (when a customer is convinced they need an updated product), and prevention of repair.
"Companies can use all of the above or a combination of all four. The ultimate goal is to make you buy products again and again," Soke wrote. And thankfully, she also provided a few examples of how to watch out for the products that are going to fall victim. "Before you buy a product, think about two things: do you need it? And, is it going to last? Just because you are purchasing an expensive product, it does not mean that you are getting one that is going to last."
Still Works. Sunday Spins, A Continued Tradition With Our Kids On The Same Stereo I Had Growing Up
My best friends got married to "Going to California" (walking down the aisle in church), we cry every time we listen to the song now....
Load More Replies...Had one of these in house growing up and I had absolutely NO IDEA it played records! Flight it was a table. Always had things on top and never opened. Was 17 when I finally found out
My Pop had one of these! I was so frustrated when he just threw it out for an Awesome Marantz system. His played 8 tracks, cassettes and LP albums and was just a bit longer. I did love that old cabinet stereo. I'd sneak in there as a child while he was at work and listen to Van Halen. The original group! Not Van Hagar! But was still a Sammy Hagar fan.
My mom left all of the albums in our family stereo. Then filled it up with old bills, catalogs, & magazine. It was packed. Then in the middle of the night, the thing fell completely apart from all of the weight inside & on top of it.
I have one similar to this one except where this one has three panels mine has four. The extra section is hollow under the lid and can hold LPs, 45s and 8tracks (all of which work perfectly). Sylvania, very early 70s model. It came to me when my father passed away in 1986 making it the most valuable thing I own, or ever will own.

A Customer Of Mine Came In For Help With Her Voicemail…
Last year around this time I posted an old Motorola Razr one of my customers was finally upgrading from, purchased November 2006. I was advised that those Razrs weren’t BIFL and in fact broke quite often, and that the only true BIFL phones were the old Nokias. Came across one today and figured I’d share.
That's why we always went to a PUB. Much faster to type.
Load More Replies...Did Wakearound seriously get banned for a joke?
Load More Replies...I worked for a cellphone company after highschool. We sold tons of different Nokia phones. The stories I heard from customers about where their phones had been would give you nightmares. 90% of the time wiping off the sim card and replacing the battery would bring these things back to life. Forget cockroaches surviving a nuclear war. Nokia phones will still be working after all the people are dead and gone.
I found my 5110 in a box a few months ago. Had not been used in well over a decade. Pressed the power button and it came to life. Had 1 bar of battery left so I played snake till it ran out
To be honest I miss my old Nokias 3210 and 3310. Charge it once a week, so small compared with smartphones and no matter how many time I lost it on the ground it never broke. Can we go back in time please?
"Look for future-proof products that are not going to be affected by software updates, and check if the product is one in a long line of slightly updated ones," Soke added. "There are some great companies and durable products out there; you just need to do a little research to find the honest ones." And BIFL is the perfect outlet for that.
My Wife Purchased These Doc Martens In 1993 And Hadn’t Worn Them In Over 20 Years. I Restore Leather As A Hobby, And It Still Blows Me Away What Quality Leather Can Come Back From
When the price of Doc Martens was worth it...good times. And now I'm wondering how one restores leather...hmmmnnn...time for a new rabbit hole...
I bought a pair of all black Herman Survivors in 1983. Cold weather army boots. I wore them until I retired from the military in 2005. I used to tell the young troops that those boots were older than they were. I stripped them every year with saddle soap & then did mink oil on them, & finished off with Kiwi. I finally donated them to a disaster relief effort a few years ago.
Are Docs no longer made of real leather? The ones I see now look like c**p.
They do still have some styles in real leather. I found a decent pair, you have to do some research to find the right ones. The real leather however is still not as good in quality as the vintage ones.
Load More Replies...Fun fact about doc martens, they're actually used in world war I or world war II. I have a pair of these that I stole from my mom lol.

"I have underwear older than that." I think my whole wardrobe is older than that.
Have used this expression for years and when dealing with those disrespecting age it's, "I've got shoes older than you!"
Load More Replies...My Dr. Pepper one is from like the year 1889! It's a beauty and I'm glad it did not get trashed. It says Drink Dr. Pepper at 10, 2 & 4 O'clock on one side. And Drink a bite to eat at 10, 2 & 4 O'clock on the reverse side! I use it still today. Carry it in my pocket when camping. A few generations of Dr. Pepper fans in my family!
I have an Original one that says Dr. Pepper and it is like 100 years old. Almost the exact same design. It was my Great great grandfathers. I still use it. Mostly for Budweiser long necks or an occasional Corona while watching Baseball! Wish I could send a photo of it. It's a little thinner at the neck and has a more rounded handle but still works as well as it did long before my father was born!
i have one thats like from 38' or 39' on it, but i don't want ot go digging for it cause its put in my grandmothers stuff

Happy Birthday To Our Refrigerator That Turned 99 Years Old This Month! She’s Still Going Strong
One of the tips I read recently to keep electricity bills down was to replace older fridges as they don't compare to modern ones in efficiency and low running costs. With the way energy prices had been going in the UK someone would have had their money back after half an hour!!😉
Load More Replies...While I'm completely for using stuff as long as possible, with anything that uses a lot of energy, there is a limited optimum lifespan depending on the progress that happened inbetween. Some 40 years ago, companies really got into energy conserving household machinery, as dishwashers (the first ones), laundry, and fridges. The really big points were all harvested in the 20 years following, while the last 20 years weren't idling on the engineers' part, the results resemble idling of ealier times - once you adressed the largest losses with effective means, there's little to further improve. Efficiency can't exceed certain values for certain types of machinery, according to their principle of working, and thereby, a 20 yo fridge that will do another 80 is by far better than a 100 yo.
But how to get to the stuff inside of it with all the stuff piled up around it?
The stuff piled up is to keep the grandkids out of the beer stored inside. Its an old timer trick!
Load More Replies...Very cool, but it can't be 99 years old. Grunow didn't even make refrigerators until after 1930. Maybe from the mid to late1930's.
Good point! It would have to be a Kiaser to be that old I think?
Load More Replies...If it's plugged in that's a fire hazard, no ventilation around, the motor gets really hot on those old fridges. Nice to keep as storage but not as a working fridge
It's likely an absorption type refrigerator, which doesn't have that problem. They use anhydrous ammonia as refrigerant and a heat source to drive the cycle, same as you'd find in a camper/RV where the fridge needs to run on different power sources (12V, 120V, propane: all just used as a heat source).
Load More Replies...Companies are in business to make money, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But as it turns out, people have an appetite for long-life guarantees. A 2016 study published by The European Economic and Social Committee analyzed whether displaying a product's lifespan would influence a consumer's decision to purchase. In other words, would we choose the same item if we know about its lifetime?
My 53 Year Old Work Truck. The Man I Got It From Bought It Brand New In 1969 And Drove 1 Truck His Entire Career Until He Retired
In the US if a vehicle is over 25 years old, emissions are not required.
Emissions testing is a scam anyway, they stopped doing it where I live in Canada because offenders would just tune their vehicles before testing.
Load More Replies...Can't remember the make/model, but my former neighbor had a truck older than this that he maintained in excellent condition. I bet he's still driving it now.
I 💙 the name on the front of the truck 🛻: Old Blue. The shade of blue is awesome, too.
Most places at least require a vehicle to pass emissions standards for the year it was built. Also to register as a classic (25 yrs+ old) some places now require collector insurance with limited mileage driven per year
Isn't that Hank? from Edison Motors? If so it's actually been made into an electric truck.

The experiment surveyed nearly 3,000 participants from five European countries by designing a fake shopping website (like Amazon or ASOS), where people were directed to a questionnaire about various socio-economic and psycho-social indicators.
"The results showed that if shoppers had information on product lifespan, they would choose to buy longer-lasting items: on average, a product’s sales increased by 56% if its lifetime was longer than competing products'," the researchers wrote. "Of the products tested, purchases of suitcases (+128%) and printers (+70%) were influenced the most by displaying the lifetime."
The Chandelier At Our Cottage Has This Vintage Light Bulb From The Early 1900s. It Still Works!
They are now made so they will die, I’m not speculating, this is a fact. If light globes lasted forever, like they originally did, the manufacturers would not be making their fortunes.
Yes. It's called planned obsolescence and it started with lightbulbs made to last a certain amount of time. By now everything has some sort of planned obsolescence mechanism :(
Load More Replies...All lightbulbs originally worked forever. Then they found money can be made off of em if they "burn out!"
And now companies puff out their chests when they claim their bulbs will last you 9-18 months. Wooooow, that's such an impressively looooong time... /s
White Mountain Model 692. Been Making Ice Cream For Birthday Parties And July 4th’s For Decades
Apparently you do not know how these work. The ice cream in contained within the stainless steel canister. The rusty motor is removed prior to the canister being lifted out and opened. There's no risk of rust contaminating the ice cream.
Load More Replies...In the 60s we had one that you had to hand crank. Great memories of my dad making ice cream in the summer.
We had this too. By the time you finished cranking you'd definitely earned some ice cream.
Load More Replies...We have an Amish farmer's market not too far from here. They use an old 1903 John Deere hit & miss motor to turn their ice cream mixer. What I find amazing it that the young Amish boys keep it running. They can't be more than 7 or 8 & they do a great job.
Fancy! We had the old crank handle type. The crazy thing I remember me, my brother and cousins fighting over who got to turn the handle to churn the ice cream. Grandma made us take turns. When asked why she did not just pick one of us to do it? She would just say because you knuckle heads must learn to share! She was a good grandma!
I gew up in the 60's we had one that this one reminds me of. We had to hand crank it.
I'd like vanilla with paint chips, please! Seriously, it is very cool.
I Inherited This Toaster From The 1920s Around 10 Years Ago And It Has Worked Great Every Single Day
Shouldn't use more juice than a modern toaster. The heating element has stayed the same. Just rather dangerous without a polarized plug and no frame/case ground. If plugged in wrong the element will always be live and the case is a shock hazard.
Load More Replies...I have a similar toaster!! They're so pretty!! I'm hoping to get it rewired, along with two sewing machines (1938 and 1953) soon, so they're in safe working order. I mean, they all currently technically work, the electricals just kinda scare me. Those old thick fabric covered cords terrify me. Especially when the fabric starts to fray a little at the joints. 😬 The only one I feel safe actually using is my grandmother's sewing machine (bought new in 1953). I grew up learning to sew on it, so I guess that's why I'm more comfortable with it, but I'd still like to get it professionally cleaned up and rewired.
I've always wanted one of these old toasters. They're so neat looking.
Not to mention that buying longer-lasting and more durable products may cost more but will save you a lot of money in the long run. And it’s definitely better for the environment. For example, one study from the University of Arizona found that people who consume less are likely happier than those who engage in other pro-environmental consumer behaviors, like buying "green" and environmentally friendly products.
My New Visionware - 30 Years Old And The Cheapest Way To Completely Avoid Teflon/Chemicals I Could Find
Glass is the worst conductor of heat though, I remember when these were the newest and coolest and so many people HATED them because everything burnt where the heat was and was stone cold everywhere else
That's caused by cooking at too high a temperature
Load More Replies...I remember when my mom was so excited to get these. I still have a few of them left, I don't use them though, but they were awesome when they came out.
Load More Replies...Cast iron & stainless steel don't have Teflon or other 'chemicals', I can't imagine that a decent stainless steel set from Kmart, Target, or your country's cheap store of choice could be more expensive than the time & effort it took to find all of the pieces to this set. And, as everyone has said, glass is a c**p heat conductor & although cool looking, they don't work well. A cast iron pan may be more expensive in the beginning, but will last a lifetime if you take care of it properly.
more than a lifetime. I use my great grandmother's cast iron skillet
Load More Replies...Oh, I hated these growing up...make sure they're COMPLETELY cooled before trying to wash them. You've been warned. I've stuck to iron pans myself....
I had this set until my husband accidentally dropped them all, one by one. 🤦♀️
glass is a horrible cooking utensil unless something is in the oven
Ohhh, I remember when this came out!! I was, like, 8 and told my dad that I wanted to get a set for my mom for Christmas! I mean, she hadn't said anything about WANTING a new cookware set, but I thought the commercials looked SO COOL!
I convinced my dad to buy a set too! Those commercials must have been marketed to 8 year olds!
Load More Replies...I have the casserole dish that I use weekly! Agree that the frying pans were terrible.
My mom still has her whole set. Never uses them but refuses to let them go.
My husband and I just bought a house and the previous owners left a full set of these in the shed out back. I washed them up and now they have a home in the kitchen! :)
My Mom’s Joint Roller From 1969
This isn't specifically for the Devil's Grass, lol. It's more commonly used by people who like to roll their own cigarettes with loose leaf tobacco.
Oh come on ... that, you do by hand. MY personal joint rollers turn 40 this month, but have only been used about 25 years for that field, hahahaha...
I never learned by hand so I'll stick to my roller, lol.
Load More Replies...My mother in law gave me a roller just like this plus her old rolling tray from when she was a teenager and it was the JOB Alphonse Mucha poster printed on it.
More like a cigarette roller. Back in my day, I was rolling joints at red lights. One handed.
Probably in a Chevelle , at least that's what I'm believing ☮️ SWEET.

The Toyota 3uz is one of the most reliable engines ever made. Some have hit over a million miles. A guy recently made it over a million and Toyota traded him for a new truck.
Not quite the same mileage, but my daily is 23 years old and had done 103k miles, with only 1 owner (me). It is only in the last few years that it has had to have anything major. Cursing the use of salt on our roads in winter, but my other half has a car now, so hoping I can keep mine off the road in winter.

The study looked at two pro-environmental behaviors: reduced consumption and "green buying". "If you are able to buy environmentally friendly products, you can still live your materialist values," researcher Sabrina Helm said. "You're acquiring new things, and that fits into our mainstream consumption pattern in our consumer culture, whereas reduced consumption is more novel and probably more important from a sustainability perspective."
On the flip side, "Reduced consumption has effects on increased well-being and decreased psychological distress, but we don't see that with green consumption." According to Helm, having less and buying less can actually make us more satisfied.
Though I’d Share This Here. This Dryer Came With My House, And It Still Works Amazing. (See Description)
I’ve never had a problem with it not drying fully on a standard 20 minute cycle, never had a problem with lint clogging (cleaning the filter and ducts as recommended of course), and I love the simplicity. About a year ago, it wasn’t drying and when I opened it, there was a schematic, and on the schematic was a written note that a repair was made in 1980! The issue was a broken belt, which I was able to replace very easily. I would estimate this to be from the 70’s and it still functions as if it was new!
It's the ease with which these can be fixed. I had a repair guy out to change the heating thingie on my which is older and he said I should never get rid of it because it can 99% of the time be fixed if something stops working.
That's all of them though. Yes it's different parts but even my newer, 5yo dryer can still be fixed. I just spent $70 and replaced and the fuses and coils and belts in mine so I don't have to buy another one in the best future due to wear.
Load More Replies...It's one of the 3 colors of the electronic of the 70's ... buffalo brown, avocado, or harvest gold.
Never get rid of it. I constantly regret being talked into replacing my Speed Queen commercial dryer from the 80s for a "better" new one. Don't spend your money on those new style dryers, get one that has the lint trap on the top right like this one, they use tho old design and are so much cheaper on maintenance and repairs.
When I moved into my apartment there was a yellow stove from the late 60s. About 3 yeari ago they put on a new white one. As of today it's toast and they can't fix it. It costs more to repair than replace. This is so wrong
I was wondering about that myself! What about towels? What about bulky sweaters or hoodies? They must do lots of small loads of laundry, which is not very efficient or eco-friendly. It's easier on the machine but not on your time management
Load More Replies...We had this same dryer growing up, it was a Kenmore. It was still working when I took it with me when I made my big move in 1997. It worked for 8 more years and then the movers dropped it and I couldn't repair and the professional repair would have cost more than a new dryer.
I used to deliver appliances like fridges, washer/dryers, microwaves, etc. It always pained me when I'd be taking something old like this out of the house. The owners would always say something like "We've had this since 1981 and it was always reliable! I hope this new one lasts as long!" with such excitement in their voice. Broke my heart to tell them they'd almost guaranteed be replacing it with a new one within 5 years.

Little Tykes Climber & Slide. My Grandfather Bought This For Me In 1985. It’s Entertained Countless Cousins And Nieces And Nephews. Now My Daughter Plays On It. Poolside Since 1995
Wow. My cousins managed to break theirs within 5 years...to be fair, my cousins were unattended monsters.
I saved a ton of toys like the little tykes shopping cart from my daughter born in 1982. Now my granddaughter uses them.
My niece and nephew now play with the toys that my brother and I played with in the 70's/80's. Mostly plastic Playskool stuff.
I really love it it started out as you slide that's awesome very cool and a great slide by the way

They certainly do! They even try to play it where there aren't any places to hide (we have an after school program in a gymnasium, which is big open space and a couple of tables and they still think they can play there)

My Dad Has Used This Escort Digital Alarm Clock Since The 1980's. I Needed A New Clock In My Bedroom So He Let Me Have It. I Love How It Looks And It Feels Much Better Quality Than Most Cheap Digital Clocks You Can Get Today
Solid state refers to the fact it uses semi conductors (usually silicone based devices) that no longer change state permanently (like a spring or coil. Or other mechanical device would) until reset... In the early days of electronics this was "futuristic", but it was the beginning of the end of build quality and feel (hence the "I prefer the feel of this" )... The same classic clock could be implemented (badly) by a 10yo using off the shelf parts in a couple of hours now..... Although the current supply chain in components may well see build quality increase as manufacturers try to cover their costs to hide supply chain issues

The cable does disintegrate on some and can just split. It happened to me and on a surface that could be a deathtrap. You should change the cable just to be safe.
My mum’s got that too! Either a wedding present (mid 1960s) or bought not long after that, it’s been in use for 50 years to my certain knowledge.
My mum had the same blender and mixer she got a s wedding present in the mid 60s until very recently (downsized and she don't use it anymore, but both still worked)
My mother has both a hand mixer, and a stand mixer, that she received as wedding gifts when she and my father got married. The hand mixer is avocado green, and the stand mixer is harvest yellow, lol. They're still like brand new, even after 45 years-she even still has the original box for the hand mixer, which she stores it in, and the original cover for the stand mixer. And she still uses them both often. I see them in use myself, every Thanksgiving. 😊

Roper Automatic Dishwasher. Installed 1978. Works Great And Is Quieter Than Most Of The New Dishwashers
I really wish I could have found an older one when I replaced mine. I couldn't even find anyone who would look at the old one for repair. Such a waste.
I just taught myself basic electrics to repair our 40 year old dishwasher because nobody wanted to even look at it for a reasonable price. Worked like a charm.
Load More Replies...new dishwashers cost so much because they have a computer in them that is hundreds of times more powerful than the one required to send the astronauts to the moon & back... back then, all you needed was a simple cam-based timer to get the soap to drop at the right time and to get the dishes clean... what changed that you need a $500 computer inside to wash dishes now? That's what you will pay if yours fails, & you need a replacement...
I had completely forgotten about this kind of dishwasher. The house I grew up in had one! We lived in that house from 1984 to 2003 and it was still working.

That's one thing about the brands with the stationary bowl I don't like. My mum has a Mixmaster and because the bowl moves, and is wider than these, you could easily scrape the bowl with a spatula as it went. With these, I get worried that I will hit the blades!

Happy 10th Birthday Kobo!
I've got an old Kobo aura and they are honestly one of the best e-readers. Mines still going strong and has a battery life that still astounds me.
Wenger Swiss Watch... Cheap Watch, But Leasted Flawless For More Then 25 Years..almost 10 Battery Replacements
Wenger makes watches? I have a few bankets from them, and they're good, too, made of some recycled plastic fleece or so ... but none of them is flawless anymore, due to smoking, there are a few holes in every blanket I have...... Yeah, I know. My Watch, also from CH, is a Fortis Flieger Automatik, who returned to me after being lost two times, and is 27 by now and will likely not leave me before I leave the living.
My Kun Shoulder Rest. Almost 10 Years With This Fella Saving My Neck :)
If you meet enough professional violinists, a lot of them will have a mark on their neck from the violin pressing against the skin! An interesting fact I eventually picked up on.
My daughter is 12. She started playing 2 years ago and is pretty damn good! 🥰1sr chair both years. Fingers crossed!!
Kirby Tradition Cb3 - 1960s?
I had one in the 80s & those things are a beast, super heavy. I prefer my light weight dyson.
OMG that's the one! I mentioned in a comment above that my mom had a Kirby when we were little-this is the one she had! Lasted probably 25 years at least, heavy as hèll, lol. That thing was a true workhorse. We called it the Dinosaur. 😂
I have a generation 3 Kerby from the 90'0. Still works well. Yes heavy, yes noisy.
8 Years, 2 Months, 19 Days Later. Thanks Olukai!

Chrome Industries Barrage - Had It For 8 Years And I Take It Everywhere. I Keep Wanting To Buy A New One But There Is Just No Reason To
Hm ... I have a backpack from Jack Wolfskin that serves me well snce 2007, daily use and weekly or more abuse. Three damages: I had to cut free two of the zippers, and the mesh compartment on the side didn't last long when carrying an umbrella, but still carries an umbrella, despite broken.
My North Face Denali Jacket From 2000 Was Built To Last
I have a pull over one that has been worn daily during the winter for almost 20 years now. It's still in great shape.

A Snippet Of My Pendleton Collection. Ages Range From 5-30+ Years Old And Years Owned Range From 2 Months To 5 Years. Most Are Made In The USA And Have No Holes Or Rips, Despite Years Of Regular Wear
Another Pendleton collector! I love Pendleton and since I live in Oregon the shirts, skirts, blankets are fairly easy to find at thrift and resale shops. Just have to keep my eyes open or I could go to the Pendleton store in Portland and actually buy the newest and greatest but I love the old patterns.

This Wallet My Dad Just Replaced - Which He’s Used Since 1993
I have one I bought for $5 from a roadside tourist trap, probably circa '02. It's only this year starting to show some loose seams, and that can be easily fixed. Good leather really lasts.

I've had watches from this company. Looks like the bags last better than the watches do. Mine all broke beyond repair within five years.
I have a Fossil wallet that is probably about 22 years old and I have no intention of replacing it any time soon. It's still in great shape.

I have my mother's Singer sewing machine from 1938. It's beautiful and still works great!
I have a can of sewing machine oil that my mother purchased back in the '60s (for 35 cents in a metal can) that we use on everything. Squeaky cabinets? One drop and they'll never squeak again.
I have a couch that is older than me (I'm 53). The structure is still great, but the fabric was going so I had it reupholstered. Was it expensive? Heck yeah! But the upholsterers told me that I will never find a couch that sturdy and in such good condition. I also still wear my grandmother's long jersey (sweater? jumper? cardigan?) that is definitely older than I am (it must be at least 60 years old if not more). There is a little fraying on the inside binding, but otherwise you'd never know! I also have my own long jersey that my aunt knitted for me in about 1988 that still looks new.
My grandpa had a couch and chairs set that came from his mother. Not sure how old, but he would have had it from the late 60s at least. He reupholstered sometime after that and now my mum had them and they still look great, so well worth the cost to reupholster. My mum loves the couch, because it is built lower to the ground and not as deep as most modern ones. She is very short, and likes being able to both touch the ground and use the backrest :)

I still have my Dad's Browning P35, 9mm pistol that he bought in London in 1940, on his way into Europe and North Africa. The grips rotted away in the heat and rain, but I carved new ones and it still shoots about as well as ever.
I want to share my 180 year old German Hunt Cabinet made from Walnut wood from the Black Forest hand carved
Why are like half of these items only a few years old? That doesn't feel like a bifl situation.
Well, BIFL is a little subjective. I read it as something really sturdy, dead people can't come on and post their old items. The average life is just under 80 years, so should we only allow things eighty years old?
