Dystopia is a world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, and fearful lives.

If you need a more vivid example, think of the novel The Children of Men (1992), by P.D. James where the human population has become infertile and lost all interest in politics, allowing the authorities to install various regulations such as mass "voluntary" suicides by the elderly, rampant cruel treatment toward prisoners of the state, and mandatory sperm testing and female inspections. Fatalism, boredom, crime, and religious hysteria are abundant, and it's not that pretty.

While such an environment might seem possible only in fiction, there is a subreddit whose members think we're actually on our way to making it a reality. It's called 'A Boring Dystopia' and these folks regularly share real-life examples of what they believe to be societal decay. Here are some of them.

I believe there's a small militia that is authorized to kill poachers on sight, which is fair enough. At least these poor rhinos will get to live a full life, but there is such a thing as "too late".

Those who want to execute pochers on sight, you aim for the wrong target. Poachers are often poor locals, in situations where poaching a animal may be the only ways to buy meds for a sick relative or even have food on the table. They take all the risks, for networks of distributors and buyers that stays safe. I cant say I wouldnt be tempted to poach if my kids future was on the line and no other viable options was present. The real villains go free.

Cherreka Wirth

That's what I say. It's not the people actively doing the killing that are the bad guys. They are being blackmailed. Given the choice, kill the animals or we kill your kids. The people to go after, are the ones buying the stuff. If everyone would stop buying it, the demand would go down and it would stop really fast.

Poaching is a business. A S****y business no doubt, performed by some vile bas-turds. You know who the truly vile are? Their clients. They're all of the above combined with callousness and cowardice who hide behind middlemen to blind themselves to their guilt and blood on their hands. They create the demand these poachers live off of. Poachers are the symptom. Consumers are the cause.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) is widely considered to be one of the primary suspects that can send us humans into doom and gloom. And for good reason: this technology has brought many good and bad things into our lives, and it will have an even greater impact in the coming decades.

Naveen Joshi, who is the founder and CEO of Allerin, a company that develops engineering and technology solutions focused on optimal customer experiences, and has extensive experience in AI, big data, IoT, and blockchain, thinks that there are legitimate reasons to be concerned.

"Current AI research is overly focused on making advances in a narrow set of domains and pays insufficient attention to the disruptive effects on society's fabric," Joshi wrote in Forbes.

I failed to add, that this message is not just about police officers pulling folks over, but also for the angry drivers who go into a road rage mode when someone is not driving fast enough,by mistake have cut them off or has given them the middle finger. The 400,000,000 firearms in the U.S. and the angry, late for work, macho attitudes and etc. make a lot of us want to put signs like this on our rides. I think a lot of commenters here are right in their concerns about politics, firearms and the growing number of dumb U.S. citizens.

This signage on the truck says a lot about many interactions between our police and what may appear to be uncooperative drivers. Police involved shootings have been going on well before Trump and the current firearms laws. Those here who own firearms may feel the need to be on the defensive and those here who think this is strictly a Trump/Republican/gun nut issue need to see more of the big picture. My point is, assuming that this is not for amusement , the owner of this truck is being PROACTIVE and using their brain. And last thing, no one wants to shot dead for any misunderstanding when pulled over by any police officer in either a Blue or Red state, period.

According to Joshi, if AI technology continues on its current path, it will likely cause social upheaval for at least two reasons.

"Firstly, AI will have an impact on the future of work. Our current trajectory over-automates work while refusing to invest in human productivity. Further advances will displace workers while failing to create new opportunities and, as a result, miss out on AI's full potential to boost productivity."

"Also, AI has the potential to undermine democracy and individual liberties."

Don't worry, they're being sued. Apparently they don't update the names very often, resulting in some instances of the wheel highlighting people who've served their sentences, causing them major problems: https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/florida-sheriff-sued-for-wheel-of-fugitive-defamation/

I hate this post cos it doesnt have any context. What am I looking at, what was its purpose how many did they make. Like is this just the climinate conference drama again where people complained about world leaders using planes to get to the climate summit. Like how else where they going to get there, by boat? Sometimes you need to use CO2 to reduce CO2. Without context everyone's comments make no sense. They are assuming stuff not stated as we have no idea what we are looking at and what its purpose is and how it will be used.

As a marketing gimmick it is cringe but it does have educational value. It helps to show how big items you throw away break down into tiny bits that are ingested by animals / fish / humans.

If things do not change, Joshi predicts that we will see massive unemployment, as many jobs will be replaced by machinery.

"Wealth inequality will be created as AI investors take the lion's share of the earnings. The gap between rich and poor will grow wider. The so-called 'M' shape of wealth distribution will become more apparent," he continued.

Yes, there're homeless children in the world. Of course our hearts bleed for them. But the vast majority are adults; drug addicts, mentally ill or disabled, often disheveled and smelling bad. It is they who are disregarded most, and they who we must care for as much as the children. I note the same for prisoners. Everyone wants to focus on the wrongly convicted. The vast majority are guilty, yet just as deserving as being treated with human compassion, moral support, and assistance progressing in their lives to live better, honest lives.

The system should be putting heavy emphasis on education and birth control, but they throw people in jail who have abortions when they're not educated about birth control, so then you have poverty creating more poverty when they're forced to have kids they can't afford to take care of. This is a very f*cked up and broken system. They'll force a woman to have a child and then shrug when she asks how she's supposed to care for it.

It’s also about the current regulations. The Trump administration actually rolled back certain safety requirements, though to be honest safety standards have been falling in American rail for years and years. Vice news has had an excellent series of articles on this for a while now, it’s not a new phenomenon. People are just paying attention for the first time in a while. Safety regulations are valuable, but not very sexy or interesting.

I looked this one up. The interview happened in 92 but the author never released this quote until 16 years after ehrlichman died, and the family denied this was ever said. They point to all the other quotes his father was able to defend against and note the quote didn't match the feeling or voice of other quotes obtainedfrom this interview. I still think this is true, I'm just a little dubious that this was actually said

But … wait a minute … Challenger deep is, according to Google about 11 kilometers or 6.8 miles down. At that depth it exerts water pressure of 8 tones per square inch. With that much pressure, wouldn’t any glass beer bottle be crushed into dust?!? This appears to be intact - does anyone know the science here?

    Annik Perrot

No, if the bottle is open, the pressure will be the same on both sides of the glass, so it won't be crushed. Not the same if it's full and closed.

I just don't understand how people could still order from these evil, shi**y companies when the working conditions have been extensively reported. How do you look in a mirror & not feel like the garbage you're wearing? At least push for reforms and health & safety enforcement if you won't shop elsewhere. I'm certainly not perfect, but there are some levels I just couldn't sink to, this is one.

I love second hands shopping! Great quality items (wool, silk) in decent prices. Don't know how ppl can order this low quality clothes and wear them knowing that someone dying to make them. I know it's hard to be always eco and moral, avoid certain things (plastic packaging, eating fish etc ) but this isn't that difficult.

Not supportive ofc, i hate that this is how it is... but nearly every other affordable brand is like this too. Bershka, h&m, zara, pull&bear... living in spain, and not able to afford more than 10 euros for a shirt or pants, whats the options? Buy a sewing machine and learn how to sew? Even secondhand stores are pretty expensive these days... theres a bigger problem than just Shein, its the whole industry.

We get so much Shein clothing at the thrift stores. I would never buy Shein. It's not even the only fast fashion online store. I see them all the time recommended on FB. Some of the clothing looks really cool and enticing to buy. But then I think of the human cost.

The reason is lawsuits in the late-80s or early-90s that claimed that McDonald's was contributing to childhood obesity by marketing to children with mascots, interiors that appealed to children, and play areas. So they gave it a more grown up look to avoid future lawsuits.

She had Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. There is no cure for EDS, and Jennyfer was in constant pain. That being said, she did NOT want to die, and wanted treatment/healthcare, but she was not able to secure the treatments and care she wanted and needed. She was, however, eligible for medically-assisted euthanasia. In the end, her mental and physical suffering grew so great that she felt pushed into choosing euthanasia. I am a supporter for assisted euthanasia for those who have terminal diagnoses, but ONLY AFTER medical assistance is exhausted or refused entirely! Jennyfer did not REFUSE medical assistance - SHE was refused it.

I saw a documentary about euthanasia on Netflix. One guy was trying to get his insurance to approve an experimental cancer treatment. The company denied him, but helpfully informed him that they DID cover the drugs for euthanasia. They’d rather have you dead, it's cheaper.

Not going to lie. Thought about it. I have EDS, a variety of it that causes remodeling in my scar tissue. Any scars near the bone becomes so tough it takes a saw to get through. I had back surgery, which is how we discovered this. It tore open down to my spine. I was also born with Waardenburg-shah and am missing part of my colon. But right now I take care of my terminally ill ex-husband and my daughter who have the same genetic condition, Gardner's Syndrome. So they need me too much. I subsist on a very small amount of medication and I am tired. No one wants to treat me because of the opioid crisis, (even though because of these stupid conditions the chemical pathways that tell your brain to feel high almost don't exist in me. Seriously, edibles don't even work on me.) So here I exist. Wishing that I could stop hurting and feeling bad because I deal with people who are even worse off than me.

But I thought maybe words help even if a little. I can just hope for you and your family that you get the strength and the help you need. I had to fight like hell with my previous Doctor because he thought I was drug seeking because of my back pain. He finally sent me in for a CT scan on a Wednesday, the next day they called and asked if I could go in for an MRI on Friday because they said I had shadows on my test. While I was doing the MRI the tech slipped and said they found masses on my CT scan and then I was sent to the lab for a ton of bloodwork. The following Monday for my follow-up the Doctor told me that I have Cancer. Both tests showed my entire spine, from top to bottom, was covered in tumors and was compressing on my spinal cord and the nerves in my neck, back and left hip. Maybe if my Doctor would have listened to me earlier when i began having the pain for a year before the initial CT scan and MRI things would not have progressed so far. I've been battling this on/off for the last 5 years and I know how absolutely exhausting dealing with a situation like this can be.

That's a middle-class house, or used to be. Maaaaaaybe upper-middle class, depending on where it is and how much land comes with it. I'm not saying Ms. Swift grew up destitute, but from this photo I can't say her family was rich. Especially not the kind of rich the title alludes to.

Location makes a difference. That's house is worth over $1M. Most people posting on here can't afford that house. It's also on 11 acres of land. That's a large enough plot for 60 - 80 houses.

To be fair, this is a pretty typical country farmhouse in rural areas of the USA until you get into more ranch country. Sure there are lots smaller ones, too, but I could post dozens of pictures of well kept farm houses like this as well as derelict ones from central Illinois, USA.

Schools and prisons are close to indistinguishable from each other the further we progress. This was when schools were for education and not indoctrination. No free thinking... Also we are on our 5th generation of improper teaching of English. For math, I learned multiplication and the start of division in 1st grade, division is being taught in 4th grade in a good chunk of the country. I had high schoolers who couldn't write full sentences and had to try to teach rounding, multiplication and division while also trying to teach quadratics...school does not equal education now.

And most of it is due to 2nd, 3rd (and so on) order of effects of women's suffrage, as in women fighting for the right to vote without responsibility of civic duty. The main goal was a "godly" husband who fully financed the family so the woman did not have to work. Cue prohibition, cue ATF, destruction of prohibition, lobbyist to criminalize marijuana and hemp.

Most prisons are federally, state, or county/city owned. There are some industries that actually build prisons and get money from the government for each inmate. I am sure they make a killing reporting costs and not giving the inmates what the prisons are claiming they are spending. CoreCivic is a big one in the United States.

This reminds me of driving to work on spring mornings, when the day promises to be so nice that it feels like a waste to spend it inside. I wonder what would really happen if I just drove on past my exit, and went out to see what the world offered. (Actually, where I live, there's not much on offer. Better to go to work, make some money, and buy a beer on the way home.)

They put production above the dignity of a dead worker and the mental health of his co-workers....what has the world come to? It's a frigging chip factory, for god's sake shut down the area, deal with the deceased in a proper, dignified manner, and get all his co-workers off the floor and together with a counsellor FFS! Those guys/women working along side him were more than likely friendly with him, and may well have significant trauma from seeing him die at work.

Years ago, my grandmother slipped on some ice while she was entering a craft store. She fell and broke her hip. Management initially refused her request for an ambulance, since they thought she was faking and "she could get up if she wanted to." Angry shoppers literally stepped over her to get in and out of the store (when they could have just as easily walked around her). Reluctantly, they called 911, she was taken to the hospital, and that's when they discovered she'd broken her hip. It was like pulling teeth to get the craft store to pay the unreimbursed portion of the bills.

I'm sorry, but I would be too nauseated considering how much more got stuffed into the CEO's pockets for me to be able to choke down a dry cupcake, regardless of who paid for it. Hey, I've got a great idea. How about the people who actually stomped the pavement day in and day out to get those numbers get to benefit from their work? Say, split the CEO's bonus in half and spread one half amongst the top performers. All of a sudden, workers benefit from their work, and it gives incentive to everyone.

Two cupcakes? But the company only had 90 million in profit. The CEO's newest yacht might not have a remote for the bookshelf if you let us have two cupcakes.

This is evidence of nothing. Is house inflation real yes. Are their systemic inequalities that show that certain groups are disenfranchised from buying houses yes. But a headline if a old man who didnt buy a house till hes 86 is proof of nothing. I hate 1/4 of these posts as their b******t evidence. Why not a news headline actually outlining these issues than this b******t.

Having worked in a supermarket where I had to reduce the going out of date food, I can see the reasoning behind this. Some customers could become quite aggressive if the item they wanted wasn't reduced enough, and would sometimes try to get me to reduce food that wasn't out of date and become aggressive when I said no. Also it makes it very difficult for the worker to do their job when getting pushed and shoved by hoards of shoppers. I used to get really anxious about doing it.

OK, this one doesn't really track. This comes out to $70 for a place that is usually rented by the night, not by the month. If you were to rent a hotel room for a month it would be outrageous as well. That said, this is comically tiny but what is the going rate for a "real" hotel room in central London?

I wouldn't put it past call centres to implement them if they owned the properties they operate from. They already time washroom breaks and have limits on employees bowels and bladders. At the place I used to work at, if you took too long the computer system would lock you out and you'd have to go to a manager to explain yourself and get them to unlock you.

Part of the rental contract for my storage space in the US explicitly states that the "tenant will not live in unit, sleep in unit, or knowingly allow another to sleep or live in the unit." If you get caught, they boot you and your stuff to the curb, and they report you to the police.

When humans don't have jobs, no more buying anything. Automating everything will defeat its own purpose. Henry Ford (yes, I am aware he was an anti-Semitic creep!) said a company should pay its workers as high a wage as feasible. Why? So they could purchase goods and services and keep the economy going.

You know, we had programs like this back in the early days. Used them to simulate mouse movement so that those ad programs we all installed to make money would think we were actually at the computer 24/7. Then they created subroutines to detect those programs. How long until some overzealous company forces a software update that detects "unauthorized devices hooked to USB"? Truth be told they already are.

I was in 3rd grade and new to that school. I had to use the restroom, so I just got up and started to leave. The teacher started freaking out - where do you think you're going? "Um, I think I'm going to the bathroom". She tells me, no you're not. You can wait until recess. "I know when I need to use the bathroom and I'm not waiting another 25 minutes". And turned to leave. She physically blocked me from leaving the classroom. So I peed all over her pretty suede boots. Sure, the principal got involved & called my Dad - who thought it was hilarious and told the principal to shove it up his a*s.

That's insane. You can't "catch" ADHD or bipolar. Through blood or anything else. You have to be born with it. And donating won't affect the donor's conditions either. That is so stupid. (And yes, I have ADHD, etc, myself, and have donated blood. It was years ago, when I was in college, and I don't remember them asking about ADHD or anything. But it went just fine nonetheless.)

I think its a statement on the cost of textbooks these days, that you have to sell your blood in order to afford them. $250 wouldn't actually buy very many text books depending on what you are studying, its only maybe two or three books if you are lucky.

Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia in Spain. It's only temporary, Samsung agreed to pay for repairs to the church and in return they would get to advertise their products. The ad in this picture is covering up the damage, temporarily.

Can relate. Worked in a hotel. Guests frequently drank from the minibar and the refilled the bottles with tap water or urine (!). So now the minibars have sensors to charge a guest for every item that has been displaced. Now, if you clear the fridge to fill it with groceries, the sensor will charge you for a full fridge.

Not to mention a washer with a billion different settings. And, this is disgusting. Have we really got that lazy that we need to control a washing machine from a smart phone?

After reading the comments...Ya'll don't know what you're talking about. This has made El Salvador safer. These gangs killed many innocent people. Including the family of my cousin...her husband is from El Salvador and they killed his whole family. Many people from El Salvador said they feel safer. Some that have gone back to visit El Salvador say it's different now. They're no longer afraid. I am all for redemption and people changing their lives. But ya'll rather have these men out and about terrorizing innocent people then? It is not an easy thing to see. I know. But all evil has to do to succeed if for the good people to do nothing. Listen to the President's speech...He was like where were ya'll when the country was suffering. Children dying? But suddenly the whole world is up on his business with this? People are so odd...

I find it interesting that so many people feel this is inhumane, yet when they read the news and hear about criminals killing innocent people this is pretty much what they want done to those criminals, and worse. Then there are the people who would rather rehabilitate and reform criminals, help them get to the root of the problem and help them get back on their feet. Those people get called "hug-a-thug". I don't think society really understands what they want. We just speak through emotions and act on impulses. If we're being really, super honest with ourselves, the difference between violent criminals and those who've never committed a violent crime is the criminals didn't give 2 shits and acted on the thoughts that were going on in their head instead of walking away and moving on. But you can't tell me not one of you has ever thought about maiming and/or killing someone who really got you angry.

Bottling plants, this one or any other, cause more destruction, waste water and depletion of natural sources than if one were to simply drink it from the tap/source for free.

yeah, those kinds of billboards are made of a fine mesh that looks solid from a distance, but up close allows light to pass through it. Its like having a fly screen on your window. Google "perforated signs" or "perforated window decals" for examples.

Embarrassed, disgusted and angry US citizen here. We must be the worst people on the planet as we have incarcerated more people than most any other country, ranking sixth in most prisoners per capita. https://www.statista.com/statistics/262962/countries-with-the-most-prisoners-per-100-000-inhabitants/ And then we manage to apply the death penalty to many that are innocent! After seeing what folks like 'The Innocence Project' have done, you would think we'd reform our so called 'justice system', but no. Let's just pretend we are the best in the world when what is really happening is the takeover of our republic by the cruel and greedy far right who only want to punish and not provide opportunities for citizens to rehabilitate. And don't get me started on the accompanying issues of using solitary confinement and privatized prisons. More cruelty and greed. 'Murica... what a global joke we have become.

I don't know if calling the US a retentionist is accurate. Yes there are no federal laws banning it, but there also also non demanding it. Also only 20 states still use the death penalty. Of those 20 only 6 have executed prisoners in the last 3 years

I've seen a documentary about a "baby box". It's actually to save the babies life. The box has a sensor to alert the person a baby is in there& he immediately takes it and takes care of it. It was really sad because many of the children have visible down syndrome.

We have one of those baby boxes in town. It saves lives. Even if among millions of boxes it saves one life over decades, it'd be worth it. (Yes, I am pro choice. Still, not everyone can even get an abortion due to availability.)

This reminds me of the "Safe Haven" act in America, where parents can safely leave their babies at a designated spot. However, as an adopted person, the wording on this sign in horrible. "unwanted baby?" My birthparents wanted me, but couldn't keep me.

One exists in Antwerp. Not officialy supported by government, but totally private initiative. After the a few instances of babies being litterally dumped in the trash, they set this up. Mother goes in, door locks behind her (can only open from inside) and she is totally unseeable from the street. There is 'hatch' in the wall, where the baby can be safely left, blankets, mattress etc. Also some paperworks, where baby's foot and handprints can be taken if the mother would later change her mind and come back for it. More info (in Dutch) here : https://vondelingenluik.be/index/be-nl/2933/

if there is no other way, then this is the way. At least the baby doesn't end up in a dumpster or a river. The woman who gave birth to the child is not always in the position to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, afford abortion or take care of the child herself.

This is less to deter abortions and more to deter dumping babies in the trash, which is a depressingly common occurrence here in SA. Every year over 10 000 babies are found abandoned, most of them already dead. That's why they installed this. Abortion is legal here and you generally don't have to wade through a sea of pro-birthers to get to a clinic that provides them. The issue is access to education and healthcare. You can only request an abortion if you're less than 13 weeks pregnant (unless your health is at risk, there was incest/rape or there is something wrong with the fetus). Many women who end up dumping their babies didn't find out in time to get an abortion.

Incredibly misleading title. The tone is played AT NIGHT, to keep teenagers/young adults from loitering in places like this AT NIGHT, when they shouldn't be there in the first place. Unless these places are staffed 24/7, they're NOT "safe spaces" for teens/young adults at night.

Yes because it's not like adults work night shifts or have any other reason to be outside after dark. You do realise the "only affects teens and twenty somethings" is a complete lie, right? Plenty of middle aged and elderly people can hear these things to. And preventing a 22yr old from walking home from their night shift is clearly different from discouraging a 13yr old from "loitering."

These stupid things are all over my country (UK). I'm in my 40s and can hear them clearly, and they're physically painful. The idea they only affect teens and 20somethings is a complete and utter lie. (And WHY would you want to implement something where a 25yr old woman with a baby can't pop in to a shop for nappies without walking through a painful noise zone, or 19yr old night shift workers can't walk home without being assaulted by this since apparently "teens shouldn't be outside at night."

Yup; they're relatively common in the UK, but while attempts to ban it across Europe have failed many local authorities don't allow its use on public buildings, and it's not uncommon for them to get removed after installation due to pressure from local residents. On the brighter side kids have co-opted the technology to create ringtones that only they can hear, so every cloud etc.

I actually did quite a bit of research on this. Along the border of Mexico and California, New Mexico and Texas, there are miles of gaps that were never filled in. This is because 1) there are obstacles in the way, or 2) they just didn't finish that section. The empty shipping crates seen here should be taken down and put in place as shelters for people with no homes. NOT to block people coming from Mexico.

Or 3) it simply isn't reasonable to put a wall up -- the ground in some areas just isn't suited to supporting any type of structure, for example, and natural barriers (like ravines and oh, the Sonoran f*****g Desert) are at least as difficult to cross. But yes, there are plenty of better uses for those containers.

This isn't a useful chart - just because a country uses more anti depressants doesn't even mean they have more people with depression, it just means people are more willing to seek help for it

and it also implies that taking medication for a mental illness/problem isn't as badly stigmatized. It's actually a good thing if you see those numbers rising imo.

Very misleading. Antidepressant usage is going to be affected by things like access to healthcare and the social stigma of seeking mental health treatment. Korea has one of the highest s**cide rates of any country. Untitled-6...76-png.jpg Untitled-643d416e97076-png.jpg

This chart doesn't give you any context though? It's not a very useful chart really on its own. Looking at the actual article the chart is from (posted in 2016 btw) iceland has a high usage because of the lack of available therapy, and korea's usage is so low because they see depression as a sign of weakness, so don't seek out help when depressed. But this chart doesn't tell you any of that. https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-largest-antidepressant-drug-users-2016-2

Yup, exactly! For example, in Slovak Republic, seeking mental health means you must be crazy, there is huuuuuge stigma around it. So people would rather just suffer than ask for any antidepression meds - resulting in nice yet misleading 5th position in this chart.

South Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Mental illness is highly stigmatized there so it’s no wonder that so few people take antidepressants.

In the USA, from my experience, it felt like antidepressant and anxiolytics were prescribed like Tylenol. I had a shoulder injury and was given valium, I had no idea why (perhaps to ease my anxiety after receiving the bill, it would make sense).

Your comment got me interested, so I looked it up: the general consensus is that you should continue using antidepressants for about 6mo after you start feeling better. I feel like people continue to take them long after that because they are worried the depression will come back as soon as they stop taking the meds. Personally, I take antidepressants, (and have done so for about 3 years)—I legitimately don’t know if they’re working or not but keep taking them bc…what if they are? At this point it’s impossible to know bc it’s a mystery as to how I would feel if I didn’t take them.

I’m just gonna say this to everyone: it’s good to start gun safety early. The reason there’s so many shootings and gun problems in the US is because the inexperienced have access to them. I say withhold the guns from those who aren’t experienced enough, and allow the people who are experienced and responsible enough to handle them.

Where is the line between use of fire arms and gun safety? I don't own or allow firearms in my home, but I did have a friend that's a police officer use his service pistol to demonstrate basic gun safety. You know always assume it's loaded. Never point at something you aren't willing to shoot. And most importantly get a grown up. But my kids might be that grownup another kid gets some day so I want them to be able to at least safely move a gun to a more secure location

Mm-hm. Part of America's gun problem has to do with the fact that practically any idiot can just buy a gun here, no training or proficiency required. Most other countries with high rates of gun ownership (Switzerland comes to mind) also have compulsory military service, so they actually learn how to handle them safely.

This is a bit of an iffy situation though. This person was hired twice, but under two different identities. Meaning either this person created a fake CV for themselves in order to secure the shift or whoever is exploiting them did it. The article reporting on this also gives no information on how old this kid was. It's entirely possible they convinced some naïve young hiring manager that they had dwarfism or something. It is of course also possible that some asshat hiring manager knew it was a kid and hired them anyway because it saved money. We will never know. The kid didn't want to comment.

A lot of them are putting in virtual golf courses that feature some of the most famous courses in the world. They even have a variety that works with vr headsets. DEP is nothing but a way recruiters came up with so they could space out their recruits entry and meet monthly quotas. The fact that some recruiters used it to get people within academic or physical guidelines was also just a quota thing that gave zero fs about a person's health.

Pre-Gen X generations had mandatory gym class implicitly to provide a battle-ready population. They also had a bigger ROTC, and the draft. Then the Cold War ended, and America’s auto industry was losing to Japan’s. Japanese kids spent every waking minute cracking the books, so US schools dumped gym (and humanities, civics, critical thinking skills, etc.). And here we are today.

The actual program seems fine, it's the accompanying story that's iffy. You shouldn't need to join the military just to get a meal and have a place to sleep. Letting out of shape folks who genuinely want to enlist doing so and getting them into shape is definitely a good thing though.

Perhaps there is a misunderstanding here. Barron's is a financial advisory magazine. If the concept of making money via the stock market is to "buy low, sell high" then there is no better time to buy stock in a company when they have majorly f****d up and their value plummets.

Wouldn't call this dystopian, it's a good idea. Traveling business people would like to have a place to conduct business during long layovers, and as someone who just dislikes people, noise, pretty much everything, I can imagine going in here for a bit and getting some peace and quiet.

Anything like this will always fail as a commercial product. Everyday people simply don't care enough. Where such a thing shines is as HUD & camera for technicians. I'd hate to be waist-deep in a piece of heavy equipment and have to wriggle my way back out to reference a schematic or verify a wire color. If it can take photos for me and show me doc while I'm in there, it's a win.

Part of American policing is based on slave patrols, which was literally created to kill Black people that they deemed a threat. They won’t be held accountable, and even if by some chance they do go to trial and lose it won’t prevent the killing of another unarmed black man.

If this is for breaks it should be celebrated. Naps and taking time out at work should be encouraged and not laughed at by employers. Even just being able to sit in a quiet place and being able to close your eyes for a few minutes, not necessarily going to sleep, can make you feel so relaxed. Normalise this in the workplace!

This is a thing because you have to show up at work before your boss and can't leave until after your boss leaves. So you are working so hard that you have to sleep at your desk. If you don't sleep at your desk, you're not working hard enough.

That is an anti drunk driving campaign car. The back window says “choose your ride.” They are trying to encourage people to take a taxi instead of driving drunk and catching a ride to jail in the back of a police car. That car just gets parked at various places where alcohol is served and is not used for regular police duty.

How good the internet you get on a cruise depends on where you sail. We were in the Caribbean in January, and the internet was surprisingly good.. (Plenty of near-by land locations the ship could pick up from.) Crossing the south Pacific might be a different story.

The number of knife murders in the USA annually is the same as the number of homicides total, by all methods, in the UK. It's just that they get lost in the enormous number of gun deaths. The USA still has five times as many murders per capita as any western European nation.

The banks lock the ATM vestibules during off hours to keep the homeless from sleeping in them. TD Canada Trust only earned $11B last year, so they obviously can't afford security guards! It's also to encourage you to not use cash-money anymore.

The heart must be incredibly small. These people would either A: Not see (ignore) them or B: arrest them. The government can give people like Musk billions in 'subsidies' but don't even think of the harshness of being homeless. I firmly believe anyone who wants to be in government should have to spend a year living like the 99% IE: multiple minimum wage, part time jobs and only help from the government with no access to any other funds.

Looks like a protest to me. "If cities leave no space for people, I'll become a car."

    1. Spending time alone is awesome 2. School makes it kinda hard to go out 3. Why hang out with people when you can read or play video games or watch movies? (I'm not from the US but I think these things apply to most people)

Social interaction is the very core of being a human being. It is the reason for the success of our species and is at our very core. The recent erosion of social and family bonds is very concerning. Mental health is crashing to an all-time low, and while it may not be directly correlated, I have a strong suspicion that it is.

Uh no that is VP Kamala Harris. It's an art installation that was placed by the National Women's History Museum. The picture was made using broken glass to symbolize breaking the glass ceiling. It's now dystopian to celebrate women?
