Rising food and energy costs have pushed the already soaring U.S. inflation to another four-decade high. According to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, the February Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 7.9% over the past 12 months. CPI measures the weighted average prices of goods and services, such as gas, food, medical care, and more.

The surging prices not only force more and more Americans to re-think their budget but also invite industry experts to share their thoughts. Recently, one such Bloomberg article has gone viral. NYC-based labor economist Teresa Ghilarducci wrote a piece headlined 'Inflation Stings Most If You Earn Less Than $300k'. Later on, Bloomberg shared it on social media, and it got widely mocked by anyone with a Twitter account.

You see, Ghilarducci shared tips on dealing with inflation which people all over thought were extremely out-of-touch and delusional about the reality. She wrote that if you want to "lessen the blow" of inflation, it’s time to substitute lentils for meat and let your pet die of cancer. People quickly started sharing their reactions online, so scroll down to see what they had to say.

Bloomberg’s recent opinion piece with tips for surviving inflation "if you earn less than $300k" received backlash on Twitter, with many people sharing their reactions

Prices are being jacked way beyond inflation. If inflation was 6%, then why is everyone marking the prices up 25-50%? My supermarket raises their prices every damned week and is getting out of control. A loaf of bread has DOUBLED in price. Same with a quart of half and half, they doubled the price. That OJ that I bought last month for $2.49? That's now $5.79. They're just gouging at this point. Electric company has recently jumped on the gouge ship, too.

Any business that makes a profit during inflation is literally artificially inflating their prices. It's like how gas prices are controlled.

We are systematically being ripped off by corporations who are using inflation, which is less than ten percent, to raise prices fifty percent or higher. Amazon's president made $212,000,0000 last year while it's workers, who made that money get barely minimum wage. This can't keep going on.

Absolutely. What will the market accept? If everyone stopped buying fuel for example, they'd reduce the price. They know we can't. The execs are sat there thinking, wow, didn't think people would still pay $180 to get into Disneyland. Should we go for $200?

It is indeed inflation that is causing everything to increase in price. In the US the gov is doing nothing about it either.

The government does nothing, because it is the government that has granted corporations more rights, bailouts, privileges and loopholes than the average individual. In return, the CEO's of these corporations pay massive amounts of money to members of the government. It's an endless, disgusting cycle. Corporations are price-gouging, pure and simple, because they can get away with it.

Pluto tv shows Bloomberg TV for free. Bypass the subscription.

People were left upset and rightfully confused after reading the article. After all, it blatantly attempts to share pieces of advice on how to pinch pennies if you’re unlucky enough to make less than $300K every year. However, some tips the labor economist and expert in retirement security offered seem innocent enough. Well, at least at first.

Ghilarducci’s op-ed reads: "To deal with gas prices, it’s worth reconsidering public transportation if it’s an option where you live. Fares are up about 8% compared with 38% for gasoline. Now may even be the time to sell your car."

Well, public transit might be an essential everyday necessity for many people across the country. It allows to reach jobs and schools, do shopping, have access to healthcare, and other services while also being a sustainable form of mobility. However, according to The American Public Transportation Association (APTA), 45% of Americans have no access to public transportation.

Another tip that caught the attention of the Twitter-sphere was when the economist said that households might consider swapping out their meat for lentils. "Meat prices have increased about 14% from February 2021 and will go up even more. Though your palate may not be used to it, tasty meat substitutes include vegetables (where prices are up a little over 4%, or lentils and beans, which are up about 9%)," she wrote.

right, buying in bulk is way cheaper. Especially for things like soaps and stuff. 1 large bottle of dish soap saves me a full year of dish soap and reduce plastics. I'm trying to be more green and save green, even well prior to the inflation BS.

If they had just said buy in bulk intelligently I'd be ok with that. Be aware of shelf life and only buy what you can use before it expires. Hygiene stuff is generally a good bet, where as produce is better to buy as needed for most homes

if you are friends with a restaurant owner/manager, talk to them about bulk items. i used to get #10 cans of fruit and vegetables for WAY cheaper. break it down into Tupperware or ziplocks and freeze. also dry goods such as TP, paper towels, pasta, etc.

It depends on what you are buying and when. I stopped buying in bulk when I tried to pay out my debt (managed most of it, except college loan, of course). If you are budgeting per month and want to pay off debt, don't buy bulk but rather use those extra $ to pay your credit cards. The fees on cards eat more of your earnings than buying bulk can save you.

Depending on the product buying in bulk can sometimes be a waste (if it's food and expires) but you can always help out others in need (if reasonable and of course feasible). Buy 2 large jars of sales? Give one to a friend or donate to food bank? Maybe?

I think there is a slight miscommunication there. Bulk buying generally means buying dry and canned food items that can be stored for a long time. The "bulk food" section in grocery stores is usually an area where the big barrels are found that are full of basic supplies. Though freezing and canning can help short lived items like fresh fruit last much longer as well.

Buying in bulk is a great money saving idea if 1) it’s stuff you use regularly or you have a big family that consumes it all 2) the cost per item is lower that buying it individually (at Costco, for example, toilet paper is a great deal in bulk but paper towels less so - the 12 pack at my supermarket was about the same per unit was about the same that their jumbo pack. YMMV but don’t forget to factor in the membership fee) 3) you have a place to store it.

Yet, there was one more suggestion that immediately struck a chord with the users — advising them to skip out on their pet’s medical bills. "If you’re one of the many Americans who became a new pet owner during the pandemic, you might want to rethink those costly pet medical needs. It may sound harsh, but researchers actually don’t recommend pet chemotherapy — which can cost up to $10,000 — for ethical reasons," the scholar explained.

"Harsh" may be an understatement. Many social media users viewed this suggestion as straight-up dark. They had some more severe remarks to say about the article and its writer, and as you can see from this post, they did not hold back. Even when Bloomberg Opinion reshared the article on Twitter, they wrote "nobody said this would be fun". Well, folks online certainly didn’t think it was.

Only difference being that Marie Antoinette never actually said "let them eat cake". So Bloomberg are way more out of touch than she was.

Lentils are actually a great solution. Just not when it comes out of the mouth of some Marie Antoinette wannabe. Because unlike cake, they do provide a more efficient source of, in this case, protein and are still yummy when prepared right. Like so many alternatives. Eating meat is a privilege we can forgo off. If only those Bloomberg farts weren't the ones speaking of it. Just do it because of the animals.

People started talking about how yet again the privileged members of society who hold positions of power explain what those who earn less should be doing with their personal lives and finances. Some were baffled that this financial news site shared such advice to those struggling every day with such a lack of consideration.

It is in fact the solution. Raising wages. Those are the ones left behind. Because yes there is inflation, but if you look at historical housing prices and the growth of our population, pretty high prices are fitting. We're just not sharing the wealth correctly. Which is in itself a way to find new ways by focusing and finding new ways from our previous thinking as separate egos in a big system. As someone in one of these posts said, it's indeed a privilege watching a society collaps. Let's hope it rises again after that. Probably will. Humans are worse than roaches.

In the US, the minimum wage should be about $25, if it kept up with inflation.

I understand the thought behind things like this, but if wages go up much more then there would go the 3 yr old small, independent shop my husband and I run in semi-rural community. Or we'd have to let our employees go and there go their jobs. My husband works long hours doing the same work our employees there do, and we pay ourselves a small amount to cover bills but we've never been able to pay him minimum wage for the hours he puts in. This first quarter was bad financially as our state's min wage went up in January, and it's winter in a northern state. Hoping that gets better as more tourists come out this summer!

Lol. You seriously think they won't pass it along? Now I understand how biden got elected. We are literally seeing the proof right before our eyes that this isn't the answer. You can raise the minimum wage 100%, but prices will go up 200% and you'll be worse off than before. You have to fix the greed problem, not the wage symptom.

Now I know where my surgeon got the idea that the severe case of anemia she caused by not protecting me from excessive blood loss during surgery came from!! Two blood infusions just after surgery didn’t even touch the numbers, so she suggested I go home and eat lentils to resolve the anemia. It took a month of IV iron infusion treatments to treat the anemia. SMH

According to the Washington Post, wealthier Americans have stronger protections shielding them against increasing prices. And that is why inflation won’t affect them as much. They already own homes, have substantial retirement savings, and their investments will probably outpace inflation in the long run.

Meanwhile, lower-income workers usually feel only the negative side of inflation. "Their rent goes up. Their heating oil prices go up. Their grocery bills go up. And there’s no room for higher prices in their already stretched budgets. Plus, with stimulus benefits and child-tax credit payments long gone, many have exhausted their financial cushions."

Profit is not a dirty word. Greed is. We need to start taxing the hell out of companies after they surpass a reasonable profit amount. For example, tax the first billion Amazon makes in profit the normal 20%. The second billion at 50%. The third at 75%, etc. etc. Force them to either put the profit back into the business (wages, benefits, etc.) Or take it through taxes and help the people with it.

Plenty of people get wealthy from non profits. Non profit doesn’t mean no salary, no growth, and no bonus. Look to some charities, hospitals, and churches as an example. Some are ridiculously extravagant and have very overcompensated admins.

And on a serious note, if you cut away the rich, let me assure you new people will gladly take their place. It's not that easy. It takes a shift in mindset. This is taken from the idea that these rich people are indeed special. They are not, they were just there at the right time. They are not exceptionally smart, they are lucky. So cut them out and some other people will get "lucky".

Xavier Jaravel, a London School of Economics professor said that for low-income Americans, a small change in disposable income is very difficult to cope with. "Every bit of additional inflation just reduces purchasing power. If you have a large income, which often goes with the fact that you’re saving a lot, then losing some of your purchasing power is not a big cost."

It’s the only reason I do not have a pet, for the first time in my life. The last one cost me $8k in vet bills. Worth every cent, but I can’t look at a package of Top Ramen without feeling a bit faint

That’s very responsible. I feel awful for all the pets without families, but it’s easier for the shelters to get discounted vet care. Luckily my dog who has a recurring medical issue, the issue is basically not treatable beyond what we can do at home anyway.

Boy, do I hear you. We have spent thousands on medications for my dog (10 yr old chihuahua) and she's still sick. There is no reason that her skin condition never heals. The only things that give her any type of retreat, are a combination of steroids and antibiotics which she isn't supposed to take long term bc but they don't want her to become antibiotic resistant. She is so miserable that even her eyes look sick. She scratches and licks herself until there is blood and cries. I can't take this sadness with her

We don't use chemicals on the lawn but we do get chemicals from the skies. The ingredients for which are all toxic for all of us. I wonder if that could be the culprit? They have copped to it but what can I do about that? I made her homemade dog food for 6 months, without success.

I don't think they want people to feel happy about it, I think they want people to feel guilty about it. That way they can continue to sell the idea that everyone in the bottom 98% has a moral or character failing for not getting to the top and therefore they don't deserve anything more.

So when Biden shut off the pipelines that has no effect on the price of gas/oil?

The Keystone XL Pipeline was not yet completed, therefore shutting it down could not have affected gas price. A president is very much powerless to affect the global demand and supply balance himself. The US president is not the president of other countries yet gas prices are rising globally as well.

I’m in full agreement with this. Most people won’t suffer until they have too though. It’s one byproduct of American first world privilege. Baby boomers that say “pull up those bootstraps” we’re lucky enough to be wearing boots. So many are stuck wearing sandals.

Many of us would have to strike as well if we want to boycott gas companies.

More backwards thinking. We need to get back to knowing our neighbors, to learn to barter and trade for services and/or goods. It’s legal and it can be a way of life saver

Some of the richest a-holes in the country got that way as a result of manipulating the fossil fuel markets over the last hundred years. Fighting fossil fuels is key to moving forward as a society.

THE WORST OF BAD IDEAS. You don’t want to go to jail, don’t want an arrest record if you get caught. This idea is a perfect example of backwards thinking. Calling it thinking is pushing the parameters of reality

When will people realize the decisions of one presidency trickles at least two years into the next presidency? I don't know where people get that decisions made at the top trickle down any faster than snail crawling across a salt bed. What you are seeing now are band-aids and patches done to fix the problems that Trump gave us from sticking his head in the sand and pretending everything could be cured with Ultra-Violet lights and bleach.....

Every new President is the victim of the previous administration. It’s always the other guys fault. I’m sick of this out of touch leadership. I’m starting to embrace “boomer”. Their heels are dug in and only care about their nest egg. F**k our grandchildren is the vibe I’m starting too feel. And zero 8 year olds showed up at the trophy shop asking for a participation award. Who did that? Hmmm

For some reason, Republicans don’t want to admit that the guy before Biden set all this in place. And that their party is committed to making things worse for anyone but themselves.

You’re awesome Penny, the supply chain was f****d over a year ago and it takes months for it to recover. Inflation was coming no matter what. Just like 08, Obama took the hate and he said it was GW’s fault. Now it’s Biden and it’s trumps fault. F**k this 2 party system, let’s evolve people. Archaic, old man, beliefs. "Live Free" under the draconian worker protection laws that always take the side of employers over their employees? That isn't freedom, it's borderline slavery.
